Cover Pup MAGICA My name is Magica, Can CH Fado’s Magical Inspiration. I am now nine months old, and this year I had a very busy summer. I was introduced to a special place, the island cottage; it’s stick heaven!! Not to mention the clam shells mommy keeps taking away from me. Nothing is better than playing with my brother Salto and Aunt Amalia, but I’m always careful to not pester my mom, Pequenina, and grandma Pinta. I had a great trip out to Alberta for the PWDCC Nationals. I was Best Puppy and Best of Winners - mom told me that’s a big deal but I was just having fun with Auntie Monica in the ring.

ThePresident’sLetter Another summer season has come and gone... and what a fabulous summer it was across the country! The PWDCC held our National Specialty in Calgary at the Alberta Kennel Club venue complete with a water trial, agility, rally and the first Superdog competition. Special thanks to Tracy Brown and her committee for hosting such a great event. Without the help of our volunteers, events like this would not be possible. Event details and photos will follow in this issue. The next National Specialty will be held in Ontario, in 2018. Details and dates regarding this event will be released in 2017. We hope to have a full venue including a water trial. The club also held two successful water trials; one in Ontario and one in Alberta. The Ontario event was very well attended with 78 entries. A great day was had by all. Special thanks to Catherine Gadd and the water trial committee for putting on a great event. The Alberta trial was held the same weekend as the Ontario trial with 39 entries. Special thanks to Brenda Brown
and Andy Gamache and their volunteers who braved the cool weather and pressed on with their trial – in wetsuits no doubt! We cannot thank our volunteers enough for their commitment to holding these events. It is very much appreciated by our Board and the entire membership. If you are interested in volunteering to help organize future PWDCC events, please do not hesitate to contact me at sharon@pwdcc.org. I would love to hear from you regarding your interests and skill sets. We continue to need volunteers in our rescue program. If you are interested in fostering a dog in need, please contact patti@pwdcc.org. As we hunker down for the fall and winter months, please do give some thought how you can contribute to the PWDCC. There is still plenty to do during the months when club sp onsored events slow down. I look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested! Sharon Lapstra President, PWDCC

The ring was complete with excellent examples of the breed standard, grooming was very good, and the dogs were ready! With the superb assistance of my excellent ring steward, all dogs were checked into the ring and then judging began with first the dogs followed by bitches. This was not an easy task as there were just not enough ribbons for me to hand out! Drats! For me, one of the negatives of judging is knowing that sometimes you must release some very worthy dogs simply because there are others just a wee bit better in one way or another. My choices were: Best of Breed – Armada’s Busting On The Scene. I found this
strong backs and nicely muscled upper and lower thighs with strong hocks. Those rudder-like tails were ever present and carried proudly. Temperaments were exceptional, sturdy and compelling. Grooming was, for the most part very well done, complimentary without being excessive. There is no need to over groom this breed, they are working dogs! There were a few dogs I would like to have seen less hair on, but then that is my job to discover what hides beneath. If I were to have concerns to share, I found some dogs with front construction not matching the rear, and this seems to be an ever present problem within the breed. Also, some were lacking in substance/bone, also some that needed a bit musculature in the neck.

The first National Specialty water trial in Alberta! What a wonderful day! Lovely weather, great site, awesome judge and 17 great dog and handler teams. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. The folks here in Alberta are the best! It hasn’t been the perfect summer for water practice but people stepped up and entered dogs to help make this trial a success. We also have the best volunteers and actually had Tracy Brown, Cindy Gamache and Kate Polkovsky come to the trial just to help! Sarah Kahn, as always, was supportive and patient with us. The one Versatility dog did the “hard part” of the exercises beautifully, it was the wind and the waves that caused her to go over time. Thank you again for the honor of judging your Specialty.

Judge’s Comments I cannot remember how many years I have been judging,
I was most amazed that the Canadians had a terrific showing;
more than 22 years, and every event holds a special memory
better than most of any group that I have judged, in spite of
for me. Many of those memories are not directly related to
your very short training season. You have some great handlers
the handler and dog's performance.... such as wearing
and trainers at your disposal and I would take advantage of
women's pantie stockings to keep the jelly fish from stinging
their knowledge and training techniques. If nothing else, during

California; judging at the beautiful sites in the Carolinas

and Georgia, and so forth... but none have touched me like
a quick retrieve for the line. This will get you really far in your

that she could, yet, she was most gracious and appreciative in the experience of not passing. She also took the time to write me the most beautiful thank you note which I will treasure always. Anthony, although not competing directly, was fully vested in the performance of the dogs. Additionally, he mesmerized the water trial crowd with his rubix cube prowess at the most fun dinner that I have ever had at a trial. Both of these young adults were engaged in the experience of the weekend. Kudos to great parenting!
The committee was so well organized on all levels which made my job so much easier. Thanks to all the stewards, the hospitality chairs (great food) and especially to the trial secretary Patti McDonald for keeping me on task. Lastly, you all have such great comradery and support for each other. Keep up the great work and enthusiasm, and hopefully, one day I could be on the other side of the fence as a participant. Your trial is what memories are made of! Charles White

As proud members of The Great Lakes Portuguese Water Dog Club and Chief Stewards of the Camp Lael - Lapeer, Michigan Water Trial we would like to thank all the participants for a very enjoyable and successful weekend. The Canadians made us proud with wonderful teams working beautifully with their dogs. Judge Alan Reisdorf was very kind, fair and supportive with a great sense of humour. He had a way of taking the tension out of the air which made it so much more enjoyable for the handlers and their dogs. Betsy, Stan and Melissa worked tirelessly as usual creating a smooth and wonderfully run event and as always the food was delicious. Volunteers and helping hands were abundant from both sides of the border and we want to thank Team Canada again for all their help and assistance.

Current Business Awards program was launched in the Waterlog and it looked great! Karen already has an application already. Roslyn is sending off the badge files and he will be creating a sample or two. Tracy will send out an e-blast regarding all of this as well. Change in breed standard was sent to the Canadian Kennel Club. 94 club members were emailed, as of today 35 reply votes were submitted with 100% of them voting “No” to a change. Sharon has forwarded this information on to CKC and has not received any word back. Membership Steering Committee This will be tabled to September. Decision was made to hold our meeting times thirty minutes later to make it easier for everyone to attend. New Business Discussion was brought up regarding members using our membership contact information once logged in. This is a breach of privacy to our members and we should possibly add some information on the m embership form or on the website. Review Code of Ethics will be added to Agenda for next meeting. Discussion regarding the Prime Minister’s purchase of a PWD was held. Decision was made to prepare a letter to the CKC, indicating the clubs disappointment that CKC did not contact the National Breed club and the Prime Minister’s Office for comment.
Rescue Walk for rescue is ready to go. The event in Cambridge has been cancelled due to lack of participation. Roslyn will update the facebook page.
Decision was made to prepare a letter to the Prime Minister to bring attention to the PM on how poorly he or his staff researched how to select a PWD puppy from an ethical breeder.
Vida is in her new home and is doing good, starting to lose some weight which is good. We need to review the rescue form and change some of the wording. Would like the form to state that “If the dog comes from a non-member ke nnel, the board receives the right to not return the dog to the breeder”, also a request to add a “Minimum” rescue fee. Discussion was held with possibly using rescue requests to assist member breeders in re-homing dogs that might be required. Roslyn confirmed that we already have a policy regarding this. All of these items to be reviewed in September.
Motion to adjourn by Sharon Lapstra. Tracy Brown seconded the motion. Approved.
Waterlog The first issue of the Waterlog under new editors was sent out. Everything looks great, next issue will focus on Rescue. National Specialty All registrations are now live. Judges have confirmed flights. Trophies and Ribbons are in the process of being ordered. We are disappointed with the lack of trophy donations being received, could be a sign of the times. Ontario Club Over $2000.00 was received for the land and water camp. When expenses are deducted we should see a profit of approx. $1600.00.

Waterlog Last addition has gone out, a few corrections were made to the version catalogued on the website. Next addition will most likely come out late September so items should be received by the end of August for submission. National Specialty Water trial will be short on entries. 17 entries received and 35 were budgeted. This means the budget will be over by approximately $1400.00. Some of the expenses have been reduced by using Specialty prizes instead of ordering separately. Judges hotel and flights are booked and everything is running smoothly. Entries for the Specialty are in and we have a total breed entry of 56, 45 in regular classes. Decent entry in the classes and a large entry in Veterans as well. Unofficial classes had nice entries. For performance events we have received entries in every category in Rally and Obedience from Novice through to Utility. 17 PWD’s entered in Rally and 10 in Obedience.
