The PWDCC announces a one year trial of a Breeders’ List on pwdcc.org
The Board is proposing a trial of a Breeders’ List under the following criteria:
• Member for at least one year (as per litter listing)
• All litters posted on the Available Puppies webpage (where are health testing is provided) ($20.00 per litter)
• All puppies sold with New Puppy Membership ($1.00 per puppy, note breeders have the option of having the puppy owner pay for this)
• All puppies registered with the CKC by the breeder
• When a bitch is owned by two or more breeders, all breeders have to be members of the PWDCC in good standing. The exception to this rule is if the co-breeder is a resident of the United States or other international location.
• Any stud dog owned or co-owned by someone on the breeder list must breed with only breeders where the bitch is bully health tested
Non-compliance, checked by CKC stud dog directory released typically in August the following year, will result in immediate removal from the PWDCC Breeder List with no refunds.
NOTICE FOR BREEDERS
Recommended tests for breeding:
Annual CAER certification.
CAER is deferred for 2023 due to Ophthalmologists are not available to provide the test except in clinics where available.
Non Compliance consists of:
• Not reporting a litter.
• Not individually registering puppies in a litter that is registered.
• Not registering a litter
Additionally, “oops” litters, an accidental breeding, where health testing is not complete will be handled
• 1st oops litter, must be reported
• 2nd oops litter, removed from the list for minimum of 6 months or the remainder of the year.
• 3rd opps litter, no longer eligible.
The Board approved some modifications to the Buyer Beware section of the website, removing the number of litters considered to be ethical.
In the PWDCC Code of Ethics section 2 Breeders: “register all tests in the PWDCA Health and Litter Log (https://hll.pwdca.org/tblmember/sign_in).”
The PWDCA HLL database is non-functioning and is being replaced by the PWDCA with the Berner Garde system. Once the new system is operational, the Board will review PWDCC’s participation in the database.

ThePresident’sLetter
Happy Holidays all,
After missing our bi-annual Specialty in 2020 due to Covid the 2022 PWDCC National Specialty was much anticipated. While the entry was mostly Ontario and a few Quebec dogs, we had a few entries travelling a very long distance including one of our Board members, Shelly Johnston from Nova Scotia and Amanda and John Ellery from Georgia (USA) who brought their very accomplished Master Water Dog, Harvey.
Travel has become more and more difficult over the past couple of years, first it was Covid and now, rising gasoline prices and very high flight costs have exacerbated the problem. Therefore, we were very pleased with the entry we were able to garner this year. Many thanks to all participants for making 2022 a great Specialty.
The Specialty began with a very full Scent Trial – a first for a PWDCC Specialty. Congratulations to the 10 new title holders. We were fortunate to be able to hold two water trials, the PWDCC trial followed by the PWDCO Trial. We were fortunate to have our own Catherine Gadd in from New Brunswick to judge both trials. We had several participants in Obedience and Rally Trials that took place over the weekend with five Obedience Qualifiers and 10 in Rally. Finally, for the PWDCC National Specialty Conformation Classes we were fortunate to have Jack Girton from Florida travel to judge Puppy and Veteran Sweeps. While we had a few misbehaving puppies, most strutted their stuff with enthusiasm. It’s always a pleasure to see the senior dogs and grand ladies in the ring showing the endurance of our breed.
Congratulations to all the class winners and placements, and particularly to our PWDCC BISS Winner “Hunter”, GCHB/Am CH Seabury’s Master of the Hunt, bred by Roslyn Eskind and John H. Brown, owned by Roslyn Eskind, he lives with Roslyn’s co-breeder Leo Hui. Hunter, when he’s not in the conformation ring, has a job as a demonstration and calming dog working with Leo’s behavioural clients assessing and rehabilitating dogs who need his help.
This year, for the first time, we introduced the Versatility Awards Program to recognize the working ability of our dogs. Dogs participated in at least three events and collected points at each discipline offered. I had the great pleasure of presenting beautiful rosettes, to co-first place winners Journey and Keeper with their owner-handlers, Lori Crouch and Karen Matthews. Third place went to Harvey and his owner-handler Amanda Ellery and fourth going to Bica and Nancy Stonell. Congratulations to these multi-talented teams.
Sending a HUGE THANK YOU to the very many volunteers who worked hard and long to organize and execute the many aspects of the 2022 Specialty. As always, an event is only as good as its volunteers.
Please see all the results in this issue.
Also this summer the first Western Water Camp and Trial was held. We were delighted to see such a full roster of participants with for both events. There were a few ups and downs with the judge getting Covid at the last minute and Sarah Kahn from Seattle filling in. The event was held at the Sorrento resort near Nelson BC – hopefully a site that will see more Western Water Events in the future.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy Holiday Season. See you all in the New Year.

PWDCC CKC Scent Trial August 9, 2022
Judge Jane Book
CKC Scent Detection trial took place last Tuesday August 9th at my dog school in Beamsville. We had seven Portuguese Water Dogs entered in all levels from Instinct, to Novice, Open and Expert.
It was great to see so many great, dog and handler teams participate. We were lucky to have a great team of volunteers who helped with registration, preparations and setup, running the event and clean-up the day of the event.
When I’m asked to pick my top dog at any event I base my decision on a few different criteria but my final decision comes down to which dog would I like to run myself!
The team I have chosen had a lovely search pattern which was very methodical during all of their searches, by the interaction during their searches I could really see that this dog knew what his job was. The handler was kind and patient with her dog, and because of that relationship between dog and handler you can see that the dog really wants to work for the handler. After searches the dog was presented with a toy to play with, with its handler as a reward for working.
I have always loved that sporting scent detection allows anyone to play despite any physical limitation of either dog or handler. Harrison displayed a respect for his handler and waited until she was able to catch up to him so they could join up before moving onto the next area to search.
Congratulations to Penny Porter and HARRISON who I have chosen as our Top Portuguese Water Dog for this trial.

2022 PWDCC National Specialty and PWDCOntario Water Trials Co-chairs’ Remarks
Thank you to our Judge Catherine Gadd, for your guidance and wisdom. You helped each team build confidence, whether or they Q’d or not, thanks to your encouraging advice, they left feeling good! To say we miss you in Ontario is an understatement, we were just so happy to have you back for a few days!
A HUGE thanks to our Water Trial Committee, who made the trial run smoothly. Joanne Hardy Skalos, Pat and Roy Vokes, Lorie Crouch, Kathy Hick, Angie Frasson, Susan Vandenberg, Sara Bowie Hunter, Frances Berman! We LOVE working with you, such an awesome team! You are all SO appreciated
Thanks to Roslyn Eskind, and PWDCC Specialty Committee for the trophies and ribbons on Thursday!
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO VOLUNTEERED (too many to mention). Only volunteers make the trials possible.
Thank you to all participants! Every single team worked their hearts out! It was a joy to watch! This year, the number of teams who qualified is outstanding!
Our Trial this year was dedicated to Lorraine Wilson. Lorraine Wilson was there at the introduction of the water work to Canada, and throughout the years that followed. She heavily influenced the ongoing success of the Water Program in Ontario. She passed away in 2020. She LOVED this sport, and she trained and successfully titled MANY of her dogs at the highest levels. Her passion for the sport was evident, and her addiction to the sport contagious; and over the years she introduced so MANY people to the love and joy of Water Trials!
In remembrance of all that Lorraine brought to the sport, and in recognition of her love to mentor and get new people involved, this year we were proud to introduce the first annual “Lorraine Wilson Most Promising Award”. Congratulations to Shelly Johnston and Ranger on earning this Award! I know Lorraine was smiling down on us all
The “Charles Robinson Performance Recognition Award” was first awarded in 2017, to honour Chuck, and acknowledge his massive contribution to the PWDCC Water Trial Program. Congratulations to Ann Staddon and Molly, the recipient of the 4th Annual Charles Robinson Performance Award!
Thank you to the people and companies who donated to our Trial. The participant trophy donors, Pat and Roy for the cases of water, and the participant bags with small gifts. Mari Sz and Purina, Big Country Raw and Ren’s Pets.
Also thanks to everyone who purchased an item of merchandise, or 50/50 ticket in support of our club. This year we sold over $800 in merchandise! Thank you to Rhonda Nissenthall-Ber for taking care of merch sales!
Thank you to every person who helped with set up and tear down of the Trial site. Many hands make light work.
Last but definitely NOT least, a HUGE thank-you to Jo Thomson, who volunteered 3 days of her precious time to take these amazing photos of us!!
The 2022 PWDCOntario and Specialty Water Trials were dedicated to the memory of Lorraine

2022 PWDCC National Specialty and PWDCOntario Water Trials
Judge Catherine Gadd’s Remarks
It was wonderful after two years of cancellations due to the pandemic to finally be able to judge the 2022 PWDCC National Specialty and Ontario water trials held at Laurel Creek, Waterloo Ontario. Thank you for inviting me.
We had a very impressive entry of dogs and handlers who in our short Canadian season and limited sites this year in Ontario to train, accomplished a great deal. Between the two trials I judged a total of 56 teams with all levels represented and had a very nice pass rate of 23 teams.
There were two special awards to give out on Thursday at the Specialty Water Trial. It was a great pleasure to award the 4th annual Charles Robinson Award to Big Bay Songs Of Brigadoon RN RI RE CD AWD (Molly) owned by Ann and William Staddon, handled by Anne. All dogs entered are eligible for this award. Among other things I was looking for the bond between dog and handler. Each knowing the job that needed to be done and each trusting their team mate to do their part to get the job done. Ann and Molly ticked all the boxes and executed a beautiful trial, earning their WWD title on Thursday. They then passed again on Friday and now need one more pass to achieve their WWDX title.
The second award was bitter sweet. The first Annual Lorraine Wilson Most Promising Award, in memory of our dear friend Lorraine who loved water work and who did so much over the years to help make the Ontario water program as successful as it is. This award went to Goldwater's Ranger CD RM owned by Stanley Johnston handled by Shelly Johnston. A team eligible for this award is chosen from the Junior and Apprentice entries. I was looking for a team who had a good understanding of the exercises and performed them with obvious enjoyment. A novice dog who exemplified the working spirit of our breed and who in my opinion would be most likely in the future to achieve a CWD title. Ranger earned his AWD on Thursday at his very first water trial and then at the Ontario trial earned his WWD title. Many congratulations to both these teams.
I would also like to congratulate everyone who entered these trials. Whether you were successful at passing your level or not, the fact that you were there and replicating some of the work historically our breed did, makes you in my opinion all winners.
Very special thanks to Carolynne Issa and Brawna Levy Co Chairs, Joanne Skalos Trial Secretary and all the hardworking committee members for running two very successful days. Well organized and smoothly run trials makes judging much easier and very enjoyable. Also big thanks to all the volunteers. It takes a great deal of people power to put on these events and without you it would not be possible.
By the time you read this summer will be well over. I hope you continue to train, trial and have fun with your dogs and the PWD water community. Take care and hope to see you again in or out of the water in the not too distant future.

Specialty Judge Steve Dainard
I’d like to thank the PWDCC for the invitation to judge your event. Judging a specialty show is the highlight of any judging assignment, especially when there is great depth in the entry, which gives the judge something to pick from.
While some of the classes were smaller, I felt the overall quality of the entry was very good. Many dogs exhibited correct proportions with medium size and a sturdy build. I felt tail carriage was very good with one or two needing improvement.
I believe I had one tentative exhibit, but overall, I felt the temperaments were excellent. Many entries showed great heart with effortless movement and proud carriage.
I felt that many heads had good proportions – the winners had larger head construction with very good bites and pigmentation. There were a couple of dogs with misaligned teeth, but nothing that would hinder functionality. There were a couple of exhibits that needed stronger underjaw formation.
It was evident that the club members did their part with the beautiful ribbons and trophies!
Thank you for this amazing opportunity. I am and will continue to be, an avid fan of the PWD.
Sincerely, Steve Dainard
Sweepstakes Judge Jack Girton
I'd like to thank everyone with PWDCC for inviting me up north to your beautiful country. Always nice to get out of Florida in the height of summer. As usual the weather was awesome as was the hospitality provided by your members. Special thanks go to Jennifer Byers, Roslyn Eskind, and Mindy Selby.for carting me around and for entertaining me when we weren't at the show.
Though my entry was small. I tend to forget that there are a lot fewer people and dogs in Canada than in the US, I was pleased to have some fine examples of our beloved breed in the ring and had no trouble finding very deserving winners for my BISS, BOSS both in the youngsters and in veterans. I wish them all the best of luck and many wins in the future.
Thanks again, Jack Girton

Western Branch Water Camp and Trial
F rom June 27-29 a water camp was held in BC for the first time in over 12 years. This was followed by a one day trial on June 30, also the first in over 12 years.
The camp and trial were held at Sorrento Retreat and Conference Center in Sorrento, BC in the beautiful Shuswap area. This was an excellent find for a location as they had accommodations ranging from tenting to full RV hook-ups, and lodge rooms to individual cabins. There was something for everyone! They also have their own private beach with a large fenced grassy area that was perfect for dry-land training.
There was a bit of panic when we arrived the day before camp and found very high water, logs washed up on shore and no accessible beach. But that wasn’t going to stop anyone. We had already dealt with Covid shut downs in 2020 when we first started planning, our instructor/judge cancelling due to Covid 10 days before camp, and Committee members having to pull together a last minute program – this was just another thing to overcome. Pants were rolled up, muscles were flexed and all those logs were moved further down the shore. We were able to clear a large enough area for the trial site which we would also use for the camp water activities.
Water Camp
The camp saw 13 dogs registered who were new to the sport, along with 11 experienced dogs, several spouses and auditors, and few dog siblings who came for support. In total we had 28 dogs and 35 handlers/auditors/spouses!
For a group of dogs/handlers new to any kind of sport everyone did very well. The dogs were well-behaved, the handlers keen to learn and the spouses stepped up to volunteer whenever needed.
We had dogs swim for the first time, retrieve for the first time, ride on a boat for the first time and, most importantly, learn to be around many dogs and ignore them while working.
The handlers learned to be the most exciting thing their dog ever met, they learned basic foundations to work on at home, they learned that their dogs love to work, and they had the opportunity to watch Working and Courier dogs practice their skills at what they were bred to do. I believe most were in awe of what these dogs can do.
The camp program, in short, included:
• Introductory fun afternoon – dogs tried various skills, followed by handler rowing and stewarding games.
• 3 half day sessions of land and water stations with the themes progressing from “Retrieving”, “Getting in the Water” to “Ready for the Boat”.
• Handlers had talks on “Basic Foundations”, “Stewarding”, “Rowing”, “Swimmer’s Tail and Wet Dog Care”, and “Why we do Water Trials”.
• The final afternoon was designed as a private 10 minutes/team ‘trial practice’ to do whatever they wanted to show off their new found skills.
The weather definitely has to be mentioned – we had hot sun, cloud, drizzle, cold rain, sun, thunder and lightning, hail, cloud, sun over the 2.5 days. And we had pine pollen turn the water yellow on the last day. Just a few more hiccups that had to be dealt with. Everyone had many laughs over these at our evening social events.
When the concept of a camp was proposed, the goal was to get as many new dogs introduced to the sport as possible. This was definitely achieved. We think a couple might be hooked, and we even had one team do a day-of-entry at the trial!
Thanks and kudos go out to the Western Branch Water Trial Committee members who pulled together to put on this camp despite all the hiccups. Some of us had never met in person until we arrived at camp. Committee members: Denyse Martin, Cathy Hammerschmidt, Shari Cooper, Michelle Hammerschmidt, Cindy and Andy Gamache, Sherri Penner. Also thanks to Audrey Hawthorne, Nancy Woodham and Karen Massner for stepping in at camp and helping to lead the groups.
Water Trial
First we have to thank judge Sarah Kahn for fitting us into her busy schedule at the last minute after our judge contracted Covid and couldn’t attend. Sarah caught an early morning flight one day and another early morning flight to go home the next day. Less than 24 hours in Canada! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The trial had 16 entries – 4 Junior, 6 Apprentice, 4 Working and 2 Courier. It was great seeing dogs from camp doing dayof entries and same-day move-ups.
The pine pollen was very thick on the water on the morning of the trial when it came time to set up the site. “How would the apprentice dogs do the underwater retrieve?” Ingenious minds and brawny muscles went to work moving and tying down logs
PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org SEPTEMBER 2022 17
to one side of the site to block most of the pollen from flowing our way. Team work again! The trial itself proceeded without any hiccups, the sun stayed out and the handlers got to see where their dogs were at so early in the season. The following is a list of the qualifiers.

The judge’s application has been submitted to the CKC, now waiting approval. Website update to be done, scent trial docs sent in waiting for an event number, a hotel has been scoped out, Roslyn to set up a meeting with her specialty committee to define roles.
Sweepstake s Jack is requesting a ramp, however PWD’s are not judged on ramps. CKC would allow a ramp if deemed necessary. Board feels that a ramp isn’t necessary.
Annual meeting needs to be prepared for especially if happening during the specialty. We will have a tent set up so we could use that for the AGM. That said we need to investigate if we will have WiFi or use a hotspot (assuming it can work with Zoom).

The PWDCOntaro Branch executive, Carolynne Issa, Branwa Levy and Joanne Skalos have resigned after many years of serving the PWDCC in Ontario. Many thanks from the board for their dedication and hard work.
Events for members are planned and provided the branch executive. Without dedicated volunteers nothing can be done. If you’re interested in being a part of the PWDCOntario executive please review the Branch by-laws at pwdcc.org/clubinfo/constitution-by-laws/#branchbylaws to see what is entailed. Ontario has a dedicated group of breeders and owners, however, organized club events have to be budgeted and approved by the board.
