In this issue we highlight the 2018 performances of the best Portuguese Water Dogs in Canada in different CKC disciplines. Our dogs are versatile and love to do so many sports, we must celebrate their accomplishments! This year, Brenda Brown and Mission finished first of all breeds in agility – a great feat! We wish congratulations to that incredible team! Several other teams have also done very well in other disciplines –we are very, very proud of you! You are wonderful ambassadors of our breed. These members perfectly fulfill one of the objectives of our club, which is to encourage and promote the different skills of Portuguese Water Dogs in various disciplines. Across Canada, activities are being organized for 2019. Water work camps and other great activities are being announced in Ontario and Alberta. Others will soon be announced in Quebec and the Maritimes. Our two newest branches, the Quebec branch and the Maritime branch have been formed by passionate dog owners, and this is also a realized mission of the club – to encourage member training in the various provinces. Special thanks to those who get involved in these branches. Spring is here, summer will soon be upon us, and many members, including myself, cannot wait to participate in our water activities. If you’ve never tried this type of activity, I strongly encourage you to try it, it's really really fun to do this with our wonderful dogs! Karine Simard President, PWDCC

PWD HERITAGE Crews aboard Portugal’s coastal fishing fleets relied on their PWD’s to help distribute nets in the water and deliver messages between vessels. Historical photos of Portuguese Water Dogs working aboard these vessels are rare to find. We came upon this one taken in 1948 aboard the ship Milena. We are guessing our fishermen are at the start of their voyage as they look well-rested, clean and dry. It also appears the PWD (and cat) are well-loved! If you have any historical PWD photos or documents, please consider sharing with us for publication in The Waterlog.

New member applications January 2017 – March 31, 2019 If no objections are received by seceretary Frank Davidson within 30 days after publication date, membership will become effective. If an objection is received, the application must be voted on by the Board within 30 days of receipt of objection by the Secretary. The applicant is notified of the result.

Motion by Karen to approve this budget. Seconded by Pat. Approved. Accounting software QuickBooks version needs to be decided. Needs to include Classing & Inv entory. The online version is $45.50 per month. Yolande is familiar with this. The downside: once you stop paying there is no access allowed. Desktop version is $315.00 (Pro or Premier Version). The downside: no sharing and separate backup must be done manually and regularly. Motion by Karen to approve the expense to purchase desktop version of QuickBooks. Seconded by Frank. Approved. Karen volunteered to store the files currently with Pat. Pat to hand-off the files at the next event. 6-year Board Member terms completed Current directors have reached out to several suitable candidates to determine their willingness to join the PWDCC Board. Goodbye and thanks to Board Members; Jennifer Byers, Andy Gamache, Sharon Lapstra and Deirdre Hall – as their term on the PWDCC Board is complete. We bid them farewel l and thanks. Karine encouraged anyone in this group to please continue to work on their committees. Our website and associated documents to be updated to reflect these changes, completed by Roslyn. The QuickBooks software has been purchased and installed on the Yolande’s computer. The cost was $281.68. All data has been installed as well. The form for the Canadian Kennel Club Insurance program is complete. Yolande has not yet received confirmation from BFL Canada. She will follow up in few days to confirm receipt of our form because the expiration date is January 30, 2019. For the next meeting in February, Yolande would like Pat Vokes to present the balance sheet and the results for 2018 to the board. All agreed. Regional Clubs Alberta Mindy reports that she is working with Andy to start a branch and will need to touch base with him as well to determine what the Alberta Club is planning. Dry Land camp and water work are in early stages of planning. Ontario Karen reported that a spring event is in the early planning stages. It will highlight various dog sports and all members/PWD owners would be invited. Lorie Crouch has found a tentative location in Cambridge for tentative date of April 7. We are looking for a volunteer to chair this commi ttee. As things stand, this event will not interfere with the scheduled Land Camp for water work. Nova Scotia Shelly reports that weekly walks are occurring at a local golf course. Quebec Karine reports that one more signature is required for the branch. Once she has that, Karine will send a motion via email to set up this new branch, followed by a determination of the structure. Karine to meet with Sylvie to set details for a dry land camp and a water camp.

Waterlog Roslyn reported plans for the next issue to include details on all of the committees, an older article from the Seafarer, and an announcement of all the new directors (a bio and photograph are required). Unfinished Business Committee Karen presented each committee and board liaisons were selected for each. Members were presented and elected. The official lis t to be published in the next Waterlog. 2020 National Specialty Decision was made to hold this event in the East. Venue and dates can now be selected. Fund-Raising We are actively looking for ideas to raise money to support our new branches: gift basket raffle, merchandise sales, water training camps and fun events. More ideas are needed. New Business Rescue Frank reported that Ian Korturbash has offered t o help in the central/prairies region with rescue. The board agrees that this is a good idea. Frank to speak with Ian regarding forms, responsibilities etc. Breeders Committee Gillian Goldschmidt will join the Breeders Committee. Frank can not volunteer at this time. Updated Policy and Procedures Manual Roslyn has reviewed all the minutes, for motions to change/correct/update the policy & procedures man ual. She will have that completed later in the week to share with the Board. Moving forward, Roslyn suggests this be the responsibility of the secretary. It would require importing images into MSWord, editing and publishing (excellent knowledge of Word would be required). Frank indicated that with some coaching he should be able to handle it. Puppyviewer The Club will consider participatiing and suppor ting this website which was started by Dr. Sharon French for the purpose of helping people to make informed choices when they are considering a new dog, and to support the many outstanding breeders by helping people understand what it takes to breed great dogs. Dr. French has support from a number of corporate sponsors, breed clubs and ethical breeders. Our homework is to review the site and determine the feasibility of joining. CKC Statement and Photo Karine received a request from the CKC to provide a statement about the PWD, as they are now considered one of the top 10 breeds. Frank wrote a short paragraph and presented it to the board. Photo selected was from our opening webpage. Roslyn will provide the photo. All agreed to have Karine send statement and photo to the CKC. Motion by Mindy Selby to adjourn the meeting. Frank seconded the motion. Next meeting will be February 12th, 8:00pm EST.

Performance Committee Aim is to only boost shows where there are performance events also. Aurora request for booster or a specialty, but no performance events. Three boosters are proposed:

Guest Roslyn Eskind Absent Frank Davidson Mindy Selby Welcome Minutes of the last meeting will be approved at the next meeting. Re: CKC request for quote and picture for Top Registered Breeds in Canada. Karine was confused who was responsible to send our submission to the CKC. However, the CKC has already sent out their blast. Minutes need to be confirmed. Treasurer’s Report Pat willl present the Treasurer’s report, year-end summary and budget for PWDCOntario events. Reilly Regional Clubs

Aug 2-3 Saint Foy conformation shows, rally, obedience, 1 day of agility: Perhaps not a huge entry but good to have exposure in other areas. Sharon will go and source prizes, $200.00 budget requested for prizes and luncheon Aug 2-4 Alberta Kennel Club Show We are hoping not to fully spend each budget, and to solicit donations instead. Sandra Allen mentioned possible Petawawa show in 2020; she will check into this and report. A booster is where the hosting club gives the PWDCC a rebate for each entry. The idea is to have a large entry, and the club benefits also. This should be explained in the Waterlog. Shelly is interested in investigating a possible booster in Nova Scotia. She will ch eck and coordinate with Karen to see if this is possible. Karen reported that host clubs are happy to give us a rebate for conformation but not for performance events, but they will provide large rosettes. K-W declined, but perhaps shows don’t realize how few PWD entries they will get. Motion by Karen to hold PWDCC booster at Erie Shoes with budget of $300.00. Seconded by Shelly. Approved. Motion by Karen t o hold PWDCC booster at St. Foy with budget of $200.00. Seconded by Sandra. Approved. Motion by Karen to hold PWDCC booster at Alberta KC shows, budget to be confirmed. Seconded by Shelly. Approved.

Nova Scotia Questions re events, simply water events or more? Any activity for members is fine as long as a budget is submitted and approved. A budget will be submitted at the next meeting.

PWDCC Year End Reports Annual Statements are published in this issue of The Waterlog.

Executive: Shelly Heather Burgess/VP, Jana Benincasa/Secretary, Sherry Scott/Treasurer.

The PWDCC Income statement has four different streams: AB, National, PWDCOntario and Specialty.

Name proposed: Nova Scotia Portugese Water Dog Club. But will not be a club, so must be more like PWDCNS, or purely NS or Maritimes?

We held extraordinary events. We had additional expenses for a rescue dog who had to boarded longer, and our website transitioned to an updated wordpress template (as old plugins of member data were no longer functional). These items contributed to a year end loss. AB (Alberta), reported no income but an expense of repairing boats for $819.00, resulting in a loss of 699.00. In Ontario there was a profit from Water Events. It was no ted that for the last 4 years, the Ontario Branch has made a profit. The last inome stream was the Specialty, hosted every other year. There was a loss, but not unexpected due to the costs of this event. The loss is not alarming as we can identify the items that caused this. Is there any place where we can look to economize going forward to keep control of costs? The membership fees are only $35.00 and have never been increased. The membership committee could ask about increasing fees if a survey will be done. Membership fees in 2017 were $4,440, and in 2018 they amounted to $4,754. The aim is to break-even with events and services provided to members.

Originally accepted as NS specified. Martimes would be more inclusive, a new application i s not necessary. Shelly will confirm with her members if a Maritimes branch is acceptable. Quebec 11 signatures secured. PWDCCQ might be the name. Motion by Shelly to approve Quebec Branch. Seconded by Karen. Approved. Committee Reports Karen reported that the committee document has been circulated to the board and will be published in the Waterlog. It is currently on the Club website.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

June 7-10 Erie Shores, Caledonia ON includes conformation shows and rally trials obedience trials. Sharon will get some prizes donated. Budget for prizes and luncheon is $300.00. Same weekend as Nutmeg specialty in U.S. Some conflict but maybe small, perhaps only 3-4 people.

MARCH 2019 17

PWDCOntario Budget This is Pat Vokes final report: Fun Day, promises to be great day with many activities, hope to break-even. Land Training Day for beginners and advanced participants, new this year. Water Camps for beginners and advanced participants usually makes money. Practice Days on a break-even basis. Water Trial is usually held at a loss due to the add ed expense of judge. We may need to trial on a Friday with a large entry. Budget reflects this. 2018 was budgeted at a $1000 loss; actual profit was $900. So all budgets are very conservative. The PWDCOntario budget spreadsheet should be used as a template for other branches, all events are covered in one document and an overall yearly picture is evident. Motion by Karen to approved proposed PWDCOntario b ranch budgets. Seconded by Sandra. Approved. Worthy of note: our insurer, BFL must be contacted with each event locations/dates so a certificate can be generated.

Membership Committee The group has proposed an email to members who have not renewed. Discussed how to reach out to people who don’t know about a National Breed Club. Frank can send this by sorting membership classes for expired and send directly to these people. It was suggested that we find owners through the CKC or reach out to memberbreeders and ask them to send out applications to their people and social media PWD groups. Alberta PWDCC Water Trial Tracy Brown joined the meeting. The proposed budget for Aug 16-18 was sent to the board. Judge Frank Cardillino has agreed to Friday judging at Dickson Dam. Match to be held on Friday mornin g with judging in the afternoon. Registration of 60, with a few day-of registrants has been estimated. Catherine Gadd will prepare a PWDOntario ad to be shared with Alberta. Last year there was a profit of $300, but this year a loss is estimated. The outcome will depend on the final cost of the Judge’s flight and land transport. A 10% contingency figure has been added for unexpected expenses. Motion by Karen to approve the 2019 Alberta PWDCC Water Trial budget. Seconded by Shelly. Approved.

The Board expressed their appreciation and thanks to Pat Volkes for all of her hard work. Unfinished Business We can sign-on to Puppyview to show our support, and individual breeders can sign on also. It’s free. Frank offered to sign us up. Motion by Karen to sign-on to the Puppyviewer website. Seconded by Sandra. Ap proved. CKC Statement and Photo The CKC posted a quote from a breeder instead of using our content. Frank has tried to contact them several times with no response. Policy and Procedures Manual update Tabled to wait for Mindy to comment. PWDCC 2020 National Specialty We are trying to find out the PWDCA dates to avoid a conflict. We’re looking at All Breed shows late in August. It’s difficult to find a sight where Water Trials can be included. The judge for our Specialty in 2020 has been contacted and has also agreed to judge on a Friday if needed. Motion to adjourn by Karen. Seconded by Sandra. Approved. Next meeting March 12, 8pm EST

* What is a Booster?

From the CKC Conformation Rules and Regulations: 12.3.6 Breed Booster “With the approval of the all-breed club, a CKC-recognized specialty club may designate their classes in that show as a booster. All classes, whether regular or non-regular, will be as provided for all breeds at the conformation show. All ribbons and rosettes must be as supplied by the all-breed club.” The purpose is to ‘boost’ the entry, to encourage more participants with the enticement of rosettes and prizes provided by the breed club, and often there is some hospitality event also. The benefit is more than normal breed points available to participants working toward their dogs’ champlonship, and the opportunity to see larger classes of dogs, for both judges present and the public.
