Cover Pup KEEPER Hello! Everyone calls me Keeper but my fancy name is Ridgehaven Keeper Of The Stars. It is pretty cool that I got named after a favourite song. I was born by C section, whatever that means, on November 20 along with 10 siblings. My guardian Karen Matthews tells me I am very special because I am her Granddog and I came from 10 year old frozen semen. I can’t figure that out either. I get to see 3 of my siblings all the time because we go to the same trainer. We get so excited to see each other that we sometimes get a little distracted In our training. My mother

handsome dude named Sam from Massachusetts. I am so happy that I get to meet him in August in Frankenmuth. I understand he is very proficient in Conformation and dog sports. My grandfather Henry was Winners Dog at the Georgia Specialty and is a Best In Show Dog. I plan to keep up with all off them!
Besides Conformation Training I am doing basic Obedience and Crate Games. Karen tells me I get to go to land training and water camp this summer...YIPPEE! Keeper was bred by Karen Matthews (Ridgehaven) and Karine Simard (Pattedeau)

ThePresident’sLetter
The year 2018 announces a change in the board of your club. As the new President, I would like to thank Sharon Lapstra for the excellent work she has done in recent years as President. Thanks to her and her team, it is a great pleasure for me to begin my term in a financially healthy club with a strong and committed board committee. Moreover, this year promises to be rich in events of all kinds.
So, in May, the Canadian specialty in Kitchener will be held, it's a very organization–intensive event and a great way to honour our beautiful breed. I invite you to participate in large numbers, your participation is essential to its success! In May and June will also be held water activities, all are invited to participate, beginners and advanced. Year after year, the people and dogs who participate have a lot of fun. Do not hesitate to get involved in these activities, they are put in place by your club and their members for you! This edition of the waterlog will highlight the incredible performance of several Portuguese water dogs in Canada in 2017. I, myself involved in many of these activities, I am able to know that it requires a lot of effort, perseverance and good dogs to achieve from above levels of competition. As President, I am very proud of the great teams that represented the breed in the CKC in both conformation and performance (obedience, rally and agility) in 2017. Finally, in closing I want to emphasize that for the first time in the history of CKC, a Portuguese water dog finishes number one all breed in conformation in Canada! Congratulations to Faro and his team on the great job. On this, at work with your wonderful dogs for such a beautiful year 2018! Karine Simard President, PWDCC karinesim@pwdcc.org
Sur ce, au travail avec vos merveilleux chiens pour une aussi belle année 2018!

CONGRATULATIONS
CANADA’S TOP SHOW DOG
FOR 2017
Portuguese Water Dog GCh Claircreek Faro Do Atlantico Bred by Donna Gottdenker and Joan Gatfield Owned by Donna Gottdenker and handled by Edgar Rojas This is the first time a Portuguese Water Dog has been crowned Canada’s Top Show Dog. Donna Gottdenker has set records on both sides of the border with her PWDs, not only claiming Canada’s #1, all breeds, but also grabbing the top spot in the U.S. with the incomparable Matisse! A professional handler for 28 years, Edgar Rojas has been handling Portuguese Water Dogs for Donna for the past 18 years and finally joins the elite group of people who have handled a Top Dog, all breeds. To learn more about Faro and Edgar’s journey, the other Top 10 dogs and to review the stats, please visit CKC’s Top Dogs page. How long have you been showing dogs? I started in 1998 and was very fortunate that my first dog won the Canadian National Specialty in Montreal. When did you win your first BIS? In 2009, Claircreek Olivia De Vendee won two BIS that year. Faro earned 49 BIS 20152017 and, of course, the very special Claircreek Impression De Matisse with 238 BIS wins from 2013 to 2015.
What was your favourite moment of 2017? Every BIS is a great moment… but the Caledon Kennel Association show at the end of the year, winning BIS under Judge Bill Shelton was the deciding show and clinched the #1 all-breed spot for Faro. Do you have a show ritual? My dogs have such beautiful coats. Our ritual is to be sure they are groomed the best they can be. This takes time before each show. What does your dog love to do when he’s not in the show ring? Faro is a very playful boy who loves long walks and running in the yard with his friends, and also loves to snuggle. Do you have a mentor? I met Carla Molinari at the World Show in Mexico where she gave my Apolina Group 1st. Since then, I call on her with any questions I might have.

What Kelby Taught Us About thirteen years ago I told my husband Buck that I wanted him to feel unconditional love - so we started thinking about getting a dog. One of Buck’s clients had a dog he wanted me to meet, her name was Zelda and she was a Portuguese Water Dog and for me it was love at first sight. So, almost twelve years ago we brought Kelby home. Kelby was our first dog, we were totally clueless and looking back I am amazed at all the wonderful things she taught us. One of the smartest things we did was to enroll Kelb in puppy class which was the beginning of her life long career in obedience where she ultimately earned her Obedience Trial Champion title. We were also very lucky to attend a Fun Day put on by the PWDCC in which we saw demonstrations of the PWD’s performing the various exercises in water work. Both Buck and I were in awe watching these dogs at work. Little did we know that Kelb would go all the way to the top, the Master level in water work. I should have realized that we had a special soul when she would come up to me and spit her baby teeth in my hand as they came loose. She gave me eight of her baby teeth.
I groomed Kelby myself and she was not fond of getting washed. As soon as she saw me preparing what was needed for her shower she would quietly go find a hiding spot under the desk in the office or even under the bed. I would then have to coax her out and take her to the dreaded shower. One time, I men-

she just put them in my hand. Kelby was just a few years old at the time.
I read a book by Temple Grandin called Animals in Translation and in it she states that animals think in pictures. I found that fascinating, and incorporated “picturing” in my obedience and water work training with amazing results. Temple’s book led me to several sports psychology books where I learned about not only thinking in pictures but making movies in my mind as well. Positive based training, teaching by playing games, having fun together, picturing and making movies, all of these things helped build a bond with our most incredible girl. Kelby did love us unconditionally, and she has changed our lives forever. Pat Vokes

Early Onset PRA (EOPRA) Test for Portuguese Water Dogs The PWDCC Board has amended recommended breeding testing to include the EOPRA test effective April 1, 2018, at least one of pair of breeding dogs must be tested Normal for EOPRA prior to breeding. PWD breeders are perhaps one of the most aware groups when it comes to Progressive Retinal Atrophy, thanks to the historic prevalence of PRA - progressive rod cone degeneration (prcd) – in the breed. The PWDCA's education outreach on prcd–PRA serves as an example of how successful a breed club can bein improving a breed's health through making members aware of inherited disease as well as supporting basic research to allow a DNA test to be developed.

PWDs are younger than 4 years of age, however the slowly progressive change in vision may not be obvious in some cases. Both prcd and EOPRA share standard PRA clinical expression, e.g. initial hyper-reflectivity of the fundus (back of the eye) due to the thinning retina as photoreceptor cells die, followed by attenuation of blood vessels that feed the retina. Eventually, as more of the photoreceptors die, the affected dogs become completely blind. The main obvious difference between the

#1 Colostrum Colostrum is naturally found in all mammalian mother’s milk. It plays a vital role in developing a newborn’s immune system and protecting him against disease.
Whether your dog’s allergies appear in the form of itchy skin, ears or feet, or digestive problems like chronic diarrhea, allergy symptoms can make life miserable for both your dog and you. Needless to say, pharmaceutical companies have come up with quite a few ways to medicate dog allergies. But you should think twice before using any of these drugs.
But it turns out that bovine colostrum (extracted from cow’s milk) in supplement form can be very beneficial to adults as well. And one of the things colostrum can do is help with allergies. Colostrum contains an ingredient called praline-rich polypeptide (PRP) that research shows can help eliminate or improve allergy symptoms. It does this by helping to control

The FCI system of judging requires judges to fill in comments on each dog on their official card. For your interest, here is this year's Crufts Judge Rachael Reddin's comments which are based on key breed points.
2, Walmsleys, Robenger Duarte Carlitos, B&W Wavy, strong head with short muzzle and dark eyes although the set of eye was a little different to what I'm used to. Strong neck held high leading into well laid shoulders with a strong well rounded rib. Nice length to body and well muscled throughout. VB (2,0) 1, Ebenig, INT Ch, Sunshine of My Life Da Pedra Da Anixia, 9 yo black Wavy. Everything I like in the breed, strength, beauty and elegance, her head is strong but still so pretty and has the darkest of eyes, held high on the move and supported by a strong short neck. Great shoulders and straight front, really well sprung ribs, firm loin and muscular rear. Her tail is beautifully set and used at all times. Great texture to the coat and well presented, her movement was so true and effortless that I could watch her all day, add to this a young handler that got every inch out of her you have the complete package. So pleased to award her CC & BOB. 2, Cobley, IBN Harun Coral, 12 yo Black Wavy, well what a stunner, reallynot showing
Broad, deep chest and well ribbed. Great length to body and firm in loin. Super angles and when she moved she covers the ground with ease using her tail at all times. I seriously considered her along with the JB in the challenge. 2, Walmsleys, Robenger Marquesa Rebecca, B&W Wavy, yet another quality bitch and much the same applies. Head of good shape and size, held up nicely by a strong short neck. Firm in body and lovely angles front and rear. Loved her rear movement but she just seemed to be a little sluggish on the move. 3, Samuelson Somebody To Love Da Pedra Da Anixia Black Wavy, Taller girl who just needs time to grow into herself. Seconded by Andy Gamache. Treasurer’s Report Pat reported $ 19,129.88 bank balance $ 185.69 outstanding cheques $ 600.00 outstanding deposit $ 19,544.19 register balance $ 114.62 Paypal balance 130 members 8 new members 72 renewals 26 puppy members Waterlog Nobody has come forward to volunteer for this position. Roslyn is looking after the current issue. Another email blast with job description will be sent out to members.
Discussion about who is responsible for the printing and distribution of PWDCC Water Certificates. Clarification was made that each regional club has received the PWDCC template and each club will continue to issue their own passing certificates to participants. One participant registered in the 2017 Water Trial payment was declined. Pat Vokes and Tracy Brown have tried to contact Tanya Strom through n umerous different methods and have not been successful. Board has agreed a letter will be sent to Tanya notifying that she will be unable to become a PWDCC Member, register in any club events across Canada (Including National) until outstanding debt is cleared. Also future entries must be received and cleared in advance. Discussion was made to further discuss at a later date closing dates and how entri es will be received and processed for further PWDCC events. Rescue Patti MacDonald will stay in this position until May 1, 2018 and we are looking for a coordinator. Sharon will ask Patti to create a job description and then Tracy will do an eblast looking for a volunteer. Current Business PWCC National Specialty Lori Crouch, Pat Vokes and Karen Matthews will look after the performance events for the Sp ecialty. Budget for 2018 Specialty will be approved via email after confirmation of all Agility classes being offered.
Ontario Club
Prizes will be discussed at the next meeting.
Nothing to report.
Brochure was circulated and it will be posted on our Facebook page and website.
Merchandise Roughly $800 of PWDCC mer chandise was sold at the PWDCA. Boutiques were held late in the week and we feel that was a reason for purchases being low. Alberta Club APWDC Club voted to in favor of treating their PWDCC Water Trial in the same aspect as a PWDCC Regional Specialty where the hosting club is re-responsible for all Revenue/Expenses. Moving forward, this will be the case with the 2018 PWDCC Alberta Water Trial.
Judges Seminar Powerpoint presentation has been updated with better pictures.
New Business F ollow up on AGM Discussion of possibly circulating a survey to see what members are looking for. This will be tabled to give the new board a chance to settle in and focus on upcoming events as National Specialty. Karine will put a message in the next waterlog. It was agreed that our focus needs to be on relaying to members how the club works as an organization, how each portion plays a role; focus o n this will be in the February Waterlog edition. Thoughts on circulating a survey to breeder members only with thoughts on what they feel should be in a breeder committee. New Website Old website is up and functioning and Roslyn will be able to review new site later this week. We hope to have the new site up within 2 weeks. The Specialty website will be live at same time, and the new EOPRA Test will be included. Motion by Sharon Lapstra that starting April 1st, the PWDCC add the EOPRA test to our list of breeding recommendations, and the policy to be the same as PWDCA. Karen Matthews seconded the motion. It was agreed that we follow suit with whatever American Portuguese Water Dog Club decides, as it makes sense to be consistant across North America. Achievement Program oKaren Matthews is requesting a bud get of $600.00 for 2018, this is down $900.00 from last year’s budget as we still have quite a bit of inventory. Motion by Pat Vokes to approve. Motion by Mindy Selby to adjourn the meeting. Pat Vokes seconded the motion.
Next meeting will be February 13th, 8:00pm EST.
Video has been redone of Danik going over dogs, and Danik will do a voice over in En glish and in French. Additional filming of the winners to be done at the Specialty. Discussion about posting what is available shortly on the website, or waiting for the Specialty filming to be complete before releasing everything. It was decided to hold off until after the Specialty. Filming of the winners in Sweeps and Specialty will be done, as well as dogs with different colors and coats. After filming is complete we will review and select final content.

PWD for sale on Kijiji in Innisfil, Ontario. Patti has reached out to try and see if we can find out who the breeder is. An email blast should be sent out to all breeders when these type of ads are posted to make everyone aware.
Shelly Johnston has contacted Catherine Gadd regarding how she could possibly start a Water Trial in Halifax area. They have a group of around 10-15 people who are interested in doing water work.
We still need to outline a job description for the Rescue position. Patti is looking after it until a replacement can be found.
Shelly will be attending the Ontario Water camp. Catherine has also suggested that since they are closer to Maine, USA they should contact Cristine Dotsie. Shelly plans to attend a Water Camp in Maine.
Current Business PWC C National Specialty Final budget needs to be approved. Motion by Karen Matthews to approve budget presented by Roslyn Eskind. Karine Simard seconded this motion. All agreed. Prize list was reviewed and some wins will be enhanced with club merchandise. Motion by Karen to approve Prize list. Seconded by Sharon Lapstra. All agreed. Motion by Karen Matthews to approve the Superdog program put forward in brochure. Seconded by Jennifer Byers. All agreed.
PWDCC will help with as much support as we can in how to start the process east. Pat Vokes brought forward that a request for payment for an invoice was had, after further investigation it was discovered that it was a huge scam. Pat always double checks with board approval prior to issuing cheques. Discussion was had about amending the by-laws to have a restriction/guide line on dollar amount the treasurer can pay without board approval. Pat will write some policy & procedures for the Treasurer position. Aurora D istrict & Kennel Club has sent out an email to see if PWDCC is interested in having a booster at their fall/winter show. Some discussion was had re-egarding having a booster at this show. Further discussion tabled to the next meeting about proceeding with a booster and which judge to pick. Motion by Karen Matthews to adjourn the meeting, Mindy Selby seconded the motion.
Next meeting will be March 13th, 8: 00pm EST.
New Business The new PWDCC website is transitioned and is now live along with the National Specialty website. A PWD Discussion Group was created by a PWDCC member and is using PWDCC Membership list and referring back to PWDCC within the Facebook page without having permission by PWDCC. Discussion was had and a suggestion was made to submit a letter to the administrator of this group requesting her to remove reference as per PWDCC bylaws. A letter will be created for the next meeting and will be approved by the board.
