UPFRONT. EDITOR'S NOTE.
NOTE
“The last edition of the year and the end of the beginning. Here’s to the future.”
In this final 2016 note I would like to thank everyone that has got involved and gave their all to make it such a fantastic year. What a crazy year it's been! We established ourselves in February with our new name, increased our staff from two to five and somehow pushed out 10 magazines, which I am sure you can understand wasn't easy with so few. So I want to thank each and every one of our contributors, writers, photographers, designers, artists, illustrators, printers and my wonderful colleagues that made each month possible and kept me from going mad! For me this year has been a wonderful journey. At the start I had no clue about designing a magazine and now I’ve just finished putting together the whole of our final 2016 edition; I’m sure you can agree each edition that has hit the stands has been better than the last. Our magazines are a testament to the talented members of the community that get involved as well as the island we love, Guernsey. (which in my opinion shows how lucky we are to have such talented creative people constantly getting involved.) So cheers to everyone, I think we all deserve a well-earned glass of fizz. I look forward to seeing you all next year!

WHATS ON YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST?
Hi everyone, check out my page every month! There’s everything from competitions to fun facts. Why not get in touch; I’d love to hear from you. - Chey@gsylife.gg
TIP OF THE MONTH.. Why not try something in the new year? TENNIS... This month we teamed up with Tennis Coach Rob West who gave us some quick fire tips;
‘SKIING HOLIDAY’
Most Club-level rallies end in unforced errors/ mistakes not amazing shots. Use these tips to increase your consistency and make less errors.
GARFIELD BROWN, 26, RISK AND INVESTMENT ANALYST
1. Go for a high net clearance of about 1-2 metres when hitting from the baseline. 2. Hit mainly cross court. 3. Maintain a good margin for error on your attacking shots. 4. Get your first serve in aiming for placement more than power, so your opponent can’t attack your second serve. 5. Keep a winning tactic going... even if it seems boring!

The 2017 season of live broadcasts from the Royal Opera House to Guernsey's Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts commences with Verdi's classic Il trovatore. Fire and snow in the landscape echo the cruelty and love of the story: soldiers and gypsies clash, a mother reveals a terrible secret and two men are engaged in a deadly fight for one woman. 7.15pm on Tuesday 31st January 2017. Tickets cost £18.00, or £16.00 with concessions (senior citizens, retired persons and full time students over 14 and under 19 years of age). PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH Location: Petit Port Photographer: Mark Renouf During these cold, wet and windy days most people will be sat at home in the warmth watching TV, drinking a mug of their favourite hot beverage. Not for Mark Renouf of Focus Photography. During these days you will find him out with his camera capturing stunning landscape images just like this one. The image was taken at Petit Port on a cold wintery day. Mark explains that the three key elements were all ideal for a 10 minute window that allowed him to capture this image with so much drama. The elements were Low tide, low cloud level and the rain fall had literally just stopped. This allowed the sun to break through to create the sunbeams in the sky yet kept the balance of light to allow the details to be kept in the foreground. If you love this image as much as we do and want to see more, feel free to check out his website www. focusphotography.gg or pop down to see him at the Christmas Markets in town Thursday's and Saturday's.

COMMUNITY NEWS A selection of community news, charitable activities and local events from within the Bailiwick.
VOLUNTEERS FROM SAFFERY CHAMPNESS HELP CLEAR UP DELANCEY PARK A team of volunteers from local firm Saffery Champness has assisted with the tidying up of the sensory gardens at Delancey Park ahead of the winter months. The clear-up, organised by Nigel Dorey from the Rotary Club of Guernsey, saw a team of 10 volunteers from the firm and their family and friends assist with weeding, planting, pruning, removing any litter and giving the garden area a general tidy up. In 2011, Saffery Champness donated funds for the development of the sensory gardens and has regularly supported the Rotary Club, which is responsible for maintaining the garden. The firm also assisted with the funding for a defibrillator to be installed at the college, next to the park, for the benefit
of all those in the area in the event of an emergency. Managing director of Saffery Champness Nick Batiste said: “Saffery Champness is committed to improving the community in which we work. Delancey Park is a key part of community life, and with it being in our parish, and so close to our offices, it is important that we do our part to ensure that it is maintained properly for everybody’s enjoyment.” Nigel Dorey of the Rotary Club of Guernsey said: “We are very grateful to firms like Saffery Champness who give up their spare time to help with community projects. The garden takes a lot of maintaining throughout the year, especially in Spring and Autumn. Saffery Champness is always eager to assist with the clear-ups and their help is much appreciated.”
IT FIRM DIRECTOR RUNS JERSEY MARATHON FOR CANCER CHARITY HELPING HIS WIFE Inspired by his wife’s battle against cancer, novice runner Jason Connolly has helped raise more than £1,200 for the charity supporting her. Mr Connolly, director at Next Generation IT, and his colleague Richard Gibbons, completed the Jersey marathon after doing the Guernsey quarter marathon and Father’s Day half marathon as training runs. Their aim was to raise £500 for Bright Tights, which supports local women, promotes awareness of gynaecological cancers and funds research into advanced immunotherapy treatments. The charity has been supporting Mr Connolly’s wife, who has been undergoing cancer treatment for more than a year. ‘Genealogical cancers are much rarer than breast cancer, so funding for support and research is lagging behind. Bright Tights is a Guernsey charity, set up specifically to resolve that. I wanted to support the great work that Bright Tights do to provide support and hope for local women. It was also great personally to be able to do something to help and to have a challenge to focus on,’ he said. ‘The Jersey marathon is a challenging hilly course, but both Richard and I beat our target time of four hours and 15 minutes, and enjoyed a well-earned pint and a burger at the finish line to celebrate. My aim was to raise £500, but I have been amazed by the generosity of my friends, family, work colleagues and customers

GUERNSEY TEENAGER RECOGNISED AMONG TOP YOUNG SPORTS STARS FROM ACROSS THE UK Guernsey FC player Robbie Legg has been recognised among young regional sports stars across the UK in the 2016 OCS Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards. The talented 17 year old footballer was selected for the 2016 OCS Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards for the Channel Islands region. This is the first year the Channel Islands have been included in the UK-based awards. Robbie was presented the award by Gaby Logan, BBC Sport commentator and former international gymnast, at an awards evening at City Hall in London on Tuesday 1st November. Robbie attended the awards with his parents, Jonathan and Amanda, alongside Guernsey College Football Academy director, Tony Vance and coach Angus Mackay. A footballer since the age of four, Robbie played for Sylvans Sports Club for seven years before joining their senior team. Robbie joined the Guernsey College Football Academy at 16 and was fast tracked to a place in the Guernsey FC football team - he has now completed two seasons with the senior team. Robbie was brought up in a sportsorientated family. The entire Legg family have been huge supporters of Liverpool Football Club for many years and in particular, Robbie’s sporting hero, Steven Gerrard. He also had a keen interest in other sports, having represented Guernsey, playing cricket in the UK when he was 13. Robbie was put forward for the award by Guernsey College Football Academy director and GFC manager, Tony Vance who said: “We are incredibly grateful to
OCS for the support they have shown for the Guernsey College Football Academy this season. The unique partnership that has been developed and the contacts we have managed to secure through OCS will ensure that we are able to provide exciting opportunities off island for this year’s group. I would also like to congratulate Robbie on his nomination for this iconic awards ceremony, there is no doubt he has a promising future ahead of him.” The Guernsey College Football Academy (GCFA) has also been recognised for the role it plays in supporting young sports people by OCS. The GCFA, in partnership with the Guernsey College of Further Education was introduced four years ago to encourage aspiring footballers to continue their studies and develop their footballing skills at the same time, by combining academic studies with player development, helping them to progress towards their sporting and career aspirations. Robbie said: “Being picked to attend the awards and make the trip to the UK was incredible; I wasn’t expecting it at all. I’m very appreciative of OCS for their support and recognition. OUR LOCAL HERO IS...
. r e g n i l l e B d r a h c i Rev R
Our hero of the month is the Rev Richard Bellinger, who has committed much of the last ten years to supporting people at the fringes of Guernsey society. The people whose lives have spiraled out of control to the extent that they have become addicted to drugs or engaged in criminal behaviour, who struggle to break the cycle of re-offending or see a way forward. It is here he argues, that we need to focus our attention to create a more inclusive, just and connected community. ‘Society isn’t about one person,’ he argues. ‘We’re all in this together.’ I met up with him to talk about faith, family and his relationship with the natural world. Richard grew up in a family of growers and was intimately connected with the rhythms of the seasons and the life cycles of the vegetables and animals he tended. After becoming a father himself, he continued to work the land as a stay at home dad and aimed for self sufficiency in his family’s food as much as possible. It was during this time that his faith began to grow. He attended church regularly and after some time, he decided to offer his life to Jesus. ‘I expected immediate fireworks and an answer to what I should be doing. It took a lot longer than that before I had the vision of what would become the Caritas Community LBG and then even more time to set up relationships with the prison service and various agencies,’ says Richard. To hear Richard speak about his faith is a beautiful thing. It is a quiet assurance that emanates from him which instantly sets you at ease. Unlike perhaps what you might expect from the Christian Church, he is a man without judgement. It is this complete acceptance of every human being, no matter their background, which is at the forefront of the work Richard does.
‘A lot of youth are stigmatised as troublemakers when really they are the ones in trouble. Happy people don’t become alcoholics, or commit crimes. I believe that in order for any society to reach it’s potential, everyone must be helped and included, and that means reaching out to people at the bottom to try and help them find a way forward,’ says Richard. A lot of Richard’s work is about offering his way of life – faith based, wholesome, connected to the rhythms of nature, with the kitchen as the heart of the family – to those whose lives have become chaotic and troubled. He set up a market garden, which is now tended to regularly by two ex-offenders. This garden supplies a farmers market stall at Sausmarez Manor and also provides ingredients for the weekly cooking session Richard leads at the prison. ‘We teach them how to cook wholesome meals, but more than that, we create relationships,’ says Richard. To help continue those relationships and create an inclusive, inexpensive community hub, Richard has set up the Caritas Community Café. The Deanery invested in the project and bought no. 35 Mill Street. Richard and a team of fantastic volunteers began running the café, on a peppercorn rent, which meant that healthy, home cooked meals could be served at a very reduced rate. Every day at the café begins with a prayer of thanks. ‘The idea is to have a place to bridge the gap between the haves and the have nots,’ says Richard. ‘It’s also a place that people can come when they leave prison, where they feel comfortable. Importantly all are welcome at the café.’
salary for a chef. The job was given to an ex-offender. ‘Stu came out of prison and started volunteering at the café. Actually, a lot of people volunteer in the café after they are released from prison. When the role was advertised, he applied and we decided he was the best person for the job. There are a few individuals that I know of that say we have helped turn their lives around,’ says Richard. And what of the man behind the work? Richard is a family man at heart and insisted that a feature about his person must include mention of his three grown up children and four grandchildren. ‘Being a stay at home dad was a beautiful part of my life. How many men get that opportunity? I have a lot to be grateful for,’ he says. When not supporting those in need, Richard can be found wandering barefoot in his fields, swimming all year round, running or spending time with his loved ones, who enable him to do his work. ‘I don’t get paid at all, so I work by the sweat of my frau,’ he jokes about his wife Sue, who has financially supported him and their family in her job as a teacher. Few fail to be moved by the work Richard undertakes, but he would credit it all to that which moves through him and makes it all possible, his faith in Jesus Christ. Next on the agenda is a residential community that is also a working farm to provide a safe house for those in need. If you are interested in volunteering at Caritas or donating to the project then contact Richard at praisethelord@cwgsy. net or tel 263203.
Initially Richard was doing all the cooking at the café, but in order to free his time to move the rest of the Caritas project forward, the Guernsey Community Foundation provided a

HEALTH INFORMATION CHARITY BALL Where: St Pierre Park Hotel An amazing evening was enjoyed by everyone who attended the first charity Ball to be held by Health Information Guernsey at St. Pierre Park Hotel. The guests of honour were the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Corder. Catherine McCook, Director of Marketing and Development for the charity said how delighted everyone at HIG was that they had agreed to attend and that Lady Corder is also to become a Patron for the charity. Since March this year HIG have been selling raffle tickets to win a Hyundai i10 which was sponsored by Barras Car Centre. The winning ticket (Number 01574) was drawn at the Ball by the Governor, who then phoned the surprised and delighted winner. It is hoped that the Ball will be the first of many and will help to raise funds and awareness for this truly local charity that provides free confidential and impartial information on disability and health matters from their offices at Beau Sejour and Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

THE COMMUNITY AWARDS 2016 Where: St James Photography: chris george The popular Community Awards took place on November 3rd at St James and was attended by over 200 people. The audience was a wonderfully diverse mix of charities, fundraisers, businesses, and amazing volunteers who all contribute to Guernsey’s thriving voluntary sector; as well as local politicians and philanthropists. BEST OF BREED SHOWCASED IN GUERNSEY Where: st James Photographer: chris george Over twenty of the “Best of Breed”
innovative technological products and services in the FinTech, Digital and Start-Up sectors were showcased on the FinVention stage at the inaugural FinVention event at St James’, St Peter Port on Tuesday 1st November 2016. The pace was deliberately ‘fast and furious’ with presenters having a maximum of eight minutes to showcase how technology could be used to transform how businesses think and operate: pioneers at the cutting edge of a Brave New World. Supported by the States of Guernsey, FinVention 2016 attracted eleven private sector companies who sponsored the event and over 100 individually registered delegates who came to watch, listen and learn more about the emerging world of FinTech and Digital. The design of the event also embraced the creative brains of the younger generation currently in secondary education in Guernsey. The FinVention schools competition saw three, first class winning presentations from Guernsey’s Grammar School, Ladies’ College and Elizabeth College. Giles Andrews co-founder and Executive Chairman of Zopa was the keynote speaker. Giles provided a valuable insight into the world of online business and how Zopa turned the service of borrowing and lending on its head to achieve its position as Europe’s largest peer-to-peer online lending service having launched in 2004. FinVention 2016 was designed to enlighten and inform delegates, demo presenters and investors of the creativity and entrepreneurialism that is making a secure foothold and also gaining traction in Guernsey. When Marc Lainé, initiator of FinVention 2016 and member of Guernsey’s FinTech and Digital Oversight Group asked for a vote as to whether or not FinVention should be repeated – the answer was a resounding YES. Mission accomplished in year one… and FinVention will return in 2017. As described by Deputy Milly Dudley-Owen, member of the Committee for Economic Development, “The legacy of FinVention, which will help us to plan 2017 and beyond, is for attendees and observers to be continuously inspired by the applications in their business sectors and to invest in some of the products and services and to further develop Guernsey as being a place with which FinTech, Digital and Start-Ups can thrive.”

SYMP SIUM O
Symposium, a gathering of intellectual speakers discussing a certain topic. Well we were slightly short on the intellectuals and topics ranged, as usual, from sausage dogs to a member of the teams undying love of old people. Yes; the GSYLife team were out on the town! The last symposium I attended was at Chemnitz University in East Germany. A delightful place that had been made cosy and warm by the Russians during the Cold War and had also decided that what would really be the cherry on the top of the cake, a 55 foot high statue of Karl Marx’s head. Bizarre. However ‘Symposium’, the latest addition to The Market, was our destination and was in sharp contrast to my previous experience! In fact, the event had more in common with the Socratic descriptions, which were of general revelry and drinking and having a darn good time.

LIFESTYLE. REVIEW
Firstly we must discuss the surroundings. For those of you that haven’t seen or been, the space that Symposium currently resides is in The Market Square directly opposite the Guille-Allès Library. It’s a throwback to the days of the old market with features retained where possible albeit the lack of fishy smells is welcome! We were guided to the mezzanine level, which made a one feel completely in touch with the history but in the comfort of clean, crisp and well-designed furniture. The seats were well padded and that was going to come into play with the delights to come…
straight to the thighs, being accompanied by chocolate ice cream and candied walnut. But hey, who cares? It all tasted brilliant. From the word go Symposium was more than it’s ancient Greek meaning of a simple drinking party, it’s a great place to rejoice in culinary delights and not just the liquid! The name was also reinforced by Ravenscroft who were about to find us butchering some classics on the karaoke night that had been arranged to give a former colleague a good and proper send off! Another example of the team going the extra mile and the central location and quality food makes it a no brainer for corporate events. An experience of beautiful food with people that have made real effort to showcase what Guernsey has to offer; Local produce and history captured in a unique gem.
As we sipped on Prosseco, which is dangerously well priced, we placed our orders before the starter arrived. Goats cheese tart for one and a flock of pigeons for the rest. The caramelised onion was that perfect consistency, contrasting beautifully with the goats’ cheese, a wellseasoned yet sophisticated classic. With a menu that boasts plenty of local ingredients, we were clearly delighted to see local wood pigeon on there too, given that three orders fluttered through the pass. The game was cooked to perfection, moist and well textured and the use of the crispy parsnips was a welcome addition. Time in between courses gave opportunity to absorb the atmosphere and finer details of the surroundings. Cutlery, water glasses and obligatory wine glasses were all of aesthetically appealing design and blended well with the overall ambiance of Symposium. The delights carried through into main course… Venison Loin, Duck Breast and Guernsey Pork Three Ways, a great team effort to test all elements of the menu. I’m not usually a fan of butchering Bambi, however when cooked, presented and accompanied so well it’s difficult not to revel in the delights. The little details such as the watercress puree and black cherry reduction make the dish. The duck was a triumph but jealousy was heaped on Sean, who had gone for the Guernsey Pork Three Ways. Tea smoked, honey glazed pork belly, thyme and garlic braised pig’s cheek and a Teriyaki and spring onion pulled pork bon bon. Oh and least we forget the creamed potato; that’ll warm your cockles on a winters eve! So to the finish, and by golly was it strong. This writer went for the ‘Edible Gin and Tonic’, I thought who wouldn’t? clearly all my colleagues as we all went off in different directions. I thought Sean was going to get a slap when he requested a ‘Manchester Tart’ but fortunately it was on the menu with some wonderful crust, short crust pastry. The ‘Brighton Belle Plum and Hazelnut Mousse’ was smooth and delicate as was the ‘Coffee Mousse’, which will find it’s way

Finding stillness during
December... December can be a super fun time of year, but it can quickly turn into frantically keeping our heads above water, overwhelming ‘to do’ list’s and sinking deeper out of our usual routines. Here at Yoga Elements Guernsey, we have a magical tool in our wellbeing kit; Restorative Yoga, which provides an opportunity to disconnect from the hectic festive activities, letting your speedometer return to 0 mph, knowing when it’s time to rest and restore is essential; creating space to unwind, whilst offering a welcome rest bite amongst the party season is key. To aid you in your quest in Christmas survival, I have detailed one of my favourite restorative poses; very easy to set up, and benefits include; reducing anxiety, assisting digestive problems, relief from headaches and insomnia, relieving swelling and fatigue in legs and feet, amongst many more. So go on, surrender and allow yourself to restore, even if it’s just for 5 precious minutes. There are two ways to practice Viparita Karani: Using props as a supported pose, or without props. Both options will provide the same benefits, but the supported version may be more relaxing for some people. Both versions require a wall upon which you can rest your legs. If you are practicing the supported version, set a bolster or firm, long pillow on the floor against the wall. Katie Brock, RYT, RPYT, AYM DIP www.yogaelementsgg.com Facebook; Yoga Elements Guernsey Photographers Kelvin Tulie & Alessandro Sigismondi.
1.
Begin the pose by sitting with your left side against the wall. Your lower back should rest against the bolster, if you’re using one.
2. 3.
Gently turn your body to the left and bring your legs up onto the wall. If you are using a bolster, ease your lower back onto the bolster before bringing your legs up the wall. Use your hands for balance as you shift Lower your back to the floor and lie down. Rest your shoulders and head on the floor.
Shift your weight from side-to-side and scoot your buttocks close to the wall. Let your arms rest open at your sides, palms facing up. If you’re using a bolster, your lower back should now be fully supported by it.
4. 5. 6.
Let the heads of your thigh bones (the part of the bone that connects in the hip socket) release and relax, dropping toward the back of your pelvis. Close your eyes. Hold for 5-10 minutes, breathing with awareness.
To release, slowly push yourself away from the wall and slide your legs down to the right side. Use your hands to help press yourself back up into a seated position.
7.
(Contraindications and cautions; if you have glaucoma, or a hernia please avoid this pose. If you have high or low blood pressure or any neck or back problems only perform this pose with the supervision of an experienced teacher.) #10. DEC 2016 - JAN 2017. THE ACKNOWLEDGE ISSUE

It was recently reported that the States of Guernsey spends more on health and social care than on any other area of government, reflecting the high standard of these services within the Island and the value placed on ensuring healthy living. As a community, if we become part of a concerted drive to become healthier, this will reduce reliance on health and social funding in the future. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU The Ultimate Detox What is colonic hydrotherapy? Colonic Hydrotherapy is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gas, accumulated faecal matter and mucous deposits. Such techniques were first recorded in 1500BC, and have been used in traditional and naturopathic medicine since that time. Using sterilized equipment, filtered water is gently introduced into the rectum which progressively softens and expels faecal matter and compacted deposits.
Full medical history is taken pre-treatment and herbal medication is prescribed post treatment. All procedures are carried out under clinical conditions, and disposable equipment is used.
Why Colonic Hydrotherapy? Colonic Hydrotherapy is more effective than an enema, since the whole colon is treated and water is not purposely retained. It is best used as a complimentary technique to other therapies, by improving elimination. Poor elimination can lead to many chronic conditions that colonic hydrotherapy can help: Constipation – Diarrhea – Mucous Colits – Colitis – Spastic Colon – Liver sluggishness – Halitosis – Headaches – Flatulence – Haemorrhoids – Skin problems (acne, eczema, psoriasis) – Abdominal bloating – Asthma – Allergies – Fatigue – many ‘psychological’ states such as depression, lethargy, schizophrenia, etc. It is also of benefit prior to and following barium enemas and during therapeutic fasting. Some complex conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Myalgic encephalomyeliyis (ME) and intestinal Candida are also helped by the resultant effect of Colonic Hydrotherapy.
Badrul Huda M.A.C.H.R.T. Medically trained Colonic Hydrotherapist.
And The Results; Most people quickly experience improved mental clarity after Colonic hydroptherapy. With their toxic load diminished and elimination improved, a greater feeling of well-being and lightness is felt. Obvious relief from bloating and constipation, toxic headaches, painful haemorrhoids and skin problems. In the longer term, bowel disease risk is also diminished and nutrients are better absorbed leading to improved all round health.

n 1916, as the Great War raged around the world, it was decided that Guernsey should send troops to aid in the war effort. Consequently, the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry was formed from members of the Guernsey Militia, along with some conscripts. (It should be noted that many Guernsey men had already volunteered for regiments in the British Army before the RGLI was formed.) After a period of training, the regiment was sent to the front line near Ypres, where it fought in several brutal battles and inevitably, suffered huge losses. There are many accounts of the bravery of the RGLI, perhaps most notably from Field Marshall Douglas Haig, who wrote in his despatches: “After very heavy fighting, in the course of which the 1st Battalion Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, 29th Division, Major-General D.E. Cayley C.M.G. commanding the division, did gallant service.....”
to home. And once again, many Guernsey soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in a bid to protect our freedom. It’s almost impossible to imagine what these brave men and women from both wars encountered and endured; soldiers’ diaries give us a horrifying glimpse, but the reality must have been immeasurably worse. Their courageousness is extraordinary, their contribution to history inestimable. So it is all the more poignant to know that a significant number of Guernsey’s fallen have no known grave, nowhere for their families to lay flowers and pay their respects. So it was fitting when, in 1926, the War Memorial at the top of Smith Street was erected to remember Guernsey’s fallen in World War I. After the Second World War, the names of the island’s casualties from that conflict were added to the monument.
PROPOSED MEMORIAL GARDEN , ST PAUL’S World War II, as we all know, brought conflict much closer
At the time the memorial was built, a large church stood where the sunken gardens are today, there was far less traffic in the area, and for many years the monument served its purpose well. Fast

forward to today: the church is gone and the memorial is left standing on what is essentially a roundabout, making access to the monument challenging to the elderly and disabled. In an effort to address this and at the same time create something truly fitting to the memory of those who gave their lives, work has been undertaken since 2003 to come up with a solution. Major Bob Place, MBE, approached Andrew Ozanne of architects Lovell Ozanne, to assist, something which Andrew was only too pleased to do: “Morally I felt it was a good project and I thought it was good for the benefit of the island...The project was to try and create a space where people, particularly the elderly, could go on Remembrance Sunday and feel that they were included within the service, within the event.” Andrew explains the problem with the current layout: “The complication with the monument at the moment is the natural contour of the land down Smith Street. It means a lot of people can’t see, it’s very difficult for the elderly and disabled,

and there isn’t particularly a large space for the laying of the wreaths.” Their plan was to create a piazza where the sunken gardens currently are, and the monument would be moved to this new area and placed immediately in front of St. James. Some key things were taken into consideration, as Andrew explains: “[The monument] would still be looking east, the appropriate direction for the battlefields, but it would be on the same plinth and podium, the same names, the same granite surround exactly, just picked up and moved. The original, as it was built in 1926, was block on block, so we could take it down block on block.” As well as providing the memorial with a grander, more accessible setting, the new piazza would also be a brand new civic amenity offering other benefits: “You could have son et lumières there, you could have plays, you could have poetry in motion, those sorts of things...There’d be lots of seating, lots of planting, and then when it came to Remembrance Sunday we’d move the seating back, we’d move the planting back and you’d have this wonderful parade-level piazza.” The plan was presented to the then Culture and Leisure Department, where it was met with approval, although one obvious question came up: how would the project be funded? The solution was seemingly simple; as a deck was being created on which the piazza would sit, there would be a void underneath which could be used for parking: “The car park would be valuable for shoppers, it could be used by people visiting the court because it’s quite difficult to find parking, and it could be used by the OGH hotel. But the States own it, and the States would be able to get the money from it.” Some number-crunching was done by Andrew and his team, and they estimated that “the car park was going to be worth about £3 million. Because that’s how precious parking is.” Things looked good for the project; the proposal was liked by Guernsey’s war veterans and key players in the States, and it was self-funding. There was, however, a problem, namely the Integrated Traffic Strategy. It wouldn’t allow a car park to be built in the area as the strategy was aimed at discouraging car use in and around the centre of town. So the parking plan was scrapped and the question of funding reared its head again. There was a second solution; the void could be used as an archive for the Royal Court. This would allow the States to stop using other properties all over the island, clearing the way for some rationalisation. Equally, the States could offer the archive facility to businesses,
“I felt that the fallen needed to have a grander... needed the monument to be able to be visited easily. It wasn’t just about the First World War, it’s about all the wars. The monument is not a tombstone, it’s a touchstone.” which could be extremely lucrative, as Andrew explains: “If you put archiving space at £15 per foot, that would be worth more than the car park.”
PROPOSED
With things seemingly in place, the plans were formally submitted to the then Environment Department, which thought it was a great civic amenity, so things started to move forward. Unfortunately for Andrew, things took an unpleasant turn: “Members of the public became quite vociferous, and there was a bit of a hate campaign against me personally.” He even received a threatening phone call suggesting he placed the monument up his backside. Presumably, the caller thought this would be a cheaper option, although he clearly hadn’t worked out how the wreath-laying would be done. Joking aside, Andrew was aware that people had very real, legitimate concerns with the plans: “It’s a nice sunken garden for sitting, and I believe that; it’s a green lung, and I believe that.” Some people wanted to be anti-establishment “because they perceived all the retired majors and colonels that were promoting this...as being establishment. I can understand that, there’s some legitimacy in that.” A shrewd campaign was run in the media to garner support for the scrapping of the

Culture and Leisure became M E M O Rchanged. IAL G ARDEN , ST P Education, Sport and Culture, and Paul Le Pelley became the new president of that committee, having previously sat on the Culture and Leisure department when the plans were originally presented to the States. Andrew and his team were invited to go and do a presentation to the new panel, where “we got their tacit support, but it wasn’t the same euphoria that Mike O’ Hara had.” Shortly after this, the committee withdrew the application from the Environment department. Paul Le Pelley issued a statement saying, “The planning application was submitted by the former Culture and Leisure Department Board. Having had the opportunity to discuss it, Members of the new Committee for Education, Sport & Culture decided against continuing with the sponsorship of the proposed development.” No further reason was given. And that, as they say, was that. The project was mothballed. It is important to note that all of the work undertaken by Lovell Ozanne has been done for free, for very good reason, as Andrew clearly articulates: “Being aware of the horrors in the Somme...and the squalor, and what [the soldiers] must have been going through both emotionally and physically, it’s almost overwhelming. And I thought I’d support this as a project, for no fee, because I think it’s right that we actually engage in remembrance. If you’re going to try and stop wars, remembrance is an appropriate way of doing this, in the sense that it brings home the horrors.” He continues: “I felt that the fallen needed to have a grander...needed the monument to be able to be visited easily. It wasn’t just about the First World War, it’s about all the wars. The monument is not a tombstone, it’s a touchstone.” It’s impossible to grasp the full horrors of war, but we all know it’s something truly terrifying. What the soldiers went through, and continue to do so to this day in conflicts around the world, is gruesome. And not just Guernsey’s soldiers; there were over 38 million casualties in World War I. Think about that for a moment. 38 million. Of which there were over 17 million deaths. It’s a staggering number. Surely we owe it to the memory of these people to create somewhere impressive and dignified, where they can be remembered for many years to come? Words Paul Chapman

STEP INTO YOUR REALITY...
Create Chartered Architects are at the cutting edge of technology with virtual reality headsets and BIM software. We find out from Design Director James Barker why this is good news for clients. What is VR (virtual reality) in terms of architecture?
furnished and lit, how ceiling height changes a room and how different areas flow. You can even mark up alterations in red with the Xbox controller, all in 3D.
A number of architects have been using computerised 3D models of their design for some time using BIM – Building Information Modelling. This enables clients to ‘look around’ a proposed design and get a feel for a space in a way that simply isn’t possible with traditional 2D drawings. Now the technology has gone a step further: you can actually feel what it's like to be right inside a building by wearing a VR headset and getting a 360-degree view.
So you can design the interior of your home? That’s right. When you’re building a 3D model you might populate the space with basic furniture, but we realised we could take it to another level. You can take the client through an interior design process to properly furnish the space, either using their existing furniture or something they are interested in buying. Manufacturers have cottoned on to this and are producing BIM-compatible models of their furniture to make the space as realistic as possible.
Aren’t VR headsets used for computer games? Yes! The technology for our new Oculus Rift was originally developed for the world of computer gaming but it can be applied to architecture. Just as you can enter and feel part of a virtual world in a game, you can put on your headset and use an Xbox controller to walk around your future home and really visualise what it will be like to live there. What are the advantages for clients? It’s estimated that in any construction project, 30% or more of total budget is spent on correcting errors not visible at the design stage. Issues like inadequate lighting, incorrectly placed electrical sockets, rooflights or support columns are difficult to identify from a plan. To overcome this, a virtual walk around a property can highlight any problems at an early stage. VR enables you to experience how the s p a c e might be

By questioning a space in context of the furnishings you want to put in, you can place your television to avoid glare from sunlight and decide where to position decorative lighting over your dining table, for example. The implications for kitchen and bathroom design are enormous and, of course, you can visualise materials for the floor and paint colours for the walls in any room. When can we experience VR? We will be formally launching our Oculus Rift VR headset at an open morning at our Port Grat offices in early January. So come along and see how VR can help with your project. We’ll be giving away some Google Cardboard VR headsets that work with your smartphone, which give a good introduction to the VR experience. In the meantime, we’ve uploaded a video onto our website create-architecture. com to give you an idea of what VR is all about. If you can’t come along to our open morning then do give us a call and we’ll be more than happy to show you in person.
Our 3D computer models are offered as standard. Spending money to improve your home is one of the biggest investments you are likely to make, and we’re confident that this technology leads to better understanding by clients, culminating in better design and a space that really works for the way they live. Create Chartered Architects will be holding an open day on Saturday 3rd December. If you’d like more information, please email sarah@create-architecture.com or call 259333.

ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station.
Words by Mike Huston Station Director for Island FM and Channel 103. I called the radio station and asked to speak to Brandi. After a few moments the reply came back as follows “I am sorry Mike but Brandi is out of the station at the moment….she is at the beach” Now Guernsey has some brilliant beaches that we all enjoy, and to be honest if it had been summertime then fine, but it was October! However it wasn’t that we had been working Brandi too hard, or that the mild October had tempted Brandi to relax on the beach. She was helping Island FM for the grand finale of our exciting promotion “Grand in the Sand” kindly sponsored by Cherry Godfrey. With a promotional title like that I don’t need to spend the next few paragraphs explaining the details. I am pleased to say that our listeners were out in force to win £1,000 in cash. Earlier in the day, in secret, our team agreed on a suitable spot and buried the cash. Our presenters then hosted the finale as our finalists searched for the hidden treasure. As you can see from the photos it was a very exciting and successful promotion and we certainly hope to repeat the competition in 2017.
Keep Listening to our radio station over the busy and exciting Christmas period to win loads of exciting prizes. We all wish you the very best of luck, and of course a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year.

About me
I have two children myself and three grandchildren and therefore can fully comprehend the anxieties that families may have in entrusting their children to the care of another. Whilst previously running my babysitting service I also had a full-time role working for the Police Force, and in 2006 I decided that holding down a full-time post and running a very busy babysitting service that had grown dramatically in numbers (families requesting sitters and sitters themselves) was too much for me and sadly decided to give up the agency. Now, having recently retired from full-time working I thought that it would be a lovely idea to start the baby-sitting service once again, as I have the time to fully commit myself to the business.
Reliable, trustworthy childcare is vital for many parents who are looking to get back into full time employment or indeed, if they require piece of mind when heading out for the evening. We spoke to Guernsey’s very own ‘super Nanny’, Dianne Carrington who has recently relaunched her premium babysitting service, ‘Babysitting Guernsey’….
How did it all begin? Having run a very popular babysitting agency a few years back I have now decided to start up another babysitting service on the island. Whilst previously running this babysitting service it very quickly became apparent that the service was needed. Due to its reliability, the service rapidly grew with much positive feedback being received, and through word of mouth, coupled with the Guernsey grapevine, bookings soared and I was forced to increase the number of sitters on my books. However, with this expansion I was very careful not to erode the quality of staff being accepted into the agency. This ethos has continued through to my new agency, and I consider it to be of upmost importance.
Ethos I fully realise the responsibilities and expectations that the families have of my sitters and it is of paramount importance that all are suitably qualified and positively police checked for the important roles that they will undertake. I consider it vitally important that when families entrust their children to my sitters, they can do so with confidence, allowing them to enjoy a pleasant evening out with total confidence. In matching my sitters to families’ requirements, I am very careful to ensure that the right level of experience is provided. • •
All sitters are police checked and matched appropriately

It's good to talk...
We are all subject to stresses and emotional turmoil during our lifetime. Whether it be finances, relationships or even pressure at work. Sometimes it can seem like there is nobody to turn to for help or advice and some people may feel that there is no way out. Two local counsellors are looking to change this, and dispel any myths that may have once surrounded counselling sessions in the process. We caught up with Beatrice and Catherine to find out how simply talking about your issues can help you to release the pressures that life may throw at you.
Catherine and Beatrice are qualified counsellors and are also qualified supervisors for other counsellors. Their commitment to you is to provide counselling in a safe, confidential, nonjudgemental environment. They work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period with the aim of enabling them to enhance their lives and live it more fully.
“Thank you for everything, I feel in a much better place, with a clearer vision on what I need to do to improve my life and prevent me falling back into taking everything personally" “I always felt emotionally safe in my counselling sessions, the counsellor was non-judgemental and enabled me to resolve many internal issues."

Experience
Experience
I began voluntary counselling work in 2010 with a local Guernsey charity and I continue to offer supervision services to this organisation. Having trained in the UK, I have worked in various educational settings as a counsellor in Guernsey through ‘Relate2U’. I also have experience working with clients on a private basis.
I started counselling nearly 20 years ago having found myself drawn to helping others. I have a great deal of experience of working with those who have suffered loss and grief. Since setting up Island Counselling 3 years ago I have helped people with difficulties in their relationships, anger issues, eating disorders, depression, loss and many who feel they are stuck in a place where they cannot move forward.
Approach I am an ‘integrative’ counsellor which means my approach is based around various humanistic models of therapy, however the approach I use when working with you, based on your individual needs, will always be underpinned by a person-centered approach.
Approach
I am experienced in helping clients who have difficulties with stress, panic attacks, anxiety, depression, anger issues, self confidence, low self-esteem and other issues.
Each client brings their own story and Island Counselling will adapt what we offer to best fit the person or couple, while always holding on to the basic principles which enable a person to make changes. Counselling sessions are 50 minutes and can take place weekly or fortnightly. One of my particular interests is developing the concept of “walking therapy” for those people who find it daunting to sit and talk face to face.
Philosophy
Philosophy
We are all ‘experts’ of our own world and we have the ability to reach our full potential. It is my belief that the ‘relationship’ we form is the key to progress within therapy and I strive to offer the best conditions for this progress to happen.
I, myself, have had seasons of counselling in my own life, and each time have learnt something new about myself or how I relate to others. It has helped me understand my own life story and how that has impacted me. My life has been affected by loss, and this has influenced how I relate to others. I believe the first step in changing situations is to understand yourself.

PULL OVER DAD, THERE'S A NEW PRIAULX ON TRACK... At 6 weeks old, Seb Priaulx’s first visit to Sliverstone was a quiet affair. At just a few days old, his mother Jo described him as “too small to be noticed.” She’s not embellishing: born four weeks early, baby Seb weighed a paltry 3lbs, 14oz. But if Seb flew under the radar then, his triumphant return to the world famous racetrack earlier this year more than made up for it. It was, according to Jo, the highlight of his young career: taking pole-position and winning against all the odds. It might sound strange to Guernsey folk to hear that Seb Priaulx, son of the legendary touring racer Andy, has struggled to compete in his father’s world. After all, Andy’s career has put Seb in the spotlight, and inspired him to commit to a sport both men love. And older islanders might be even more incredulous at this characterisation. They may remember his grandfather Graham at the hill climb, or his great grandfather Ernold at the sand racing. But this characterisation – Seb, as the latest in a line of natural born racers, benefiting from his dad’s success – couldn’t be further from the truth. If his grandfather climbed hills, Seb has had to climb a mountain to get where he is today.
for. I knew he was good, but didn’t know how good.” Jo shares her husband’s pride when she watches Seb race. Like any other teenage boy, Seb has his struggles – he is not, for instance, particularly academic – but when he gets behind the wheel, he is in his element. “On the racetrack,” she tells me, “he comes alive.” She also tells me that his racing style bears an uncanny resemblance to his father’s. Given that Priaulx Sr. is a champion many times over – the only FIA Touring Car champion to win an international championship four years in a row, in fact – this bodes very well. But it is no accident of genetics that allows Seb to emulate Andy’s performance – it is hard work. While many of his contemporaries are socialising, Seb is rigorously pushing himself to achieve the type of peak fitness racers need. He runs; he cycles; sometimes, Jo tells me, he bikes round the island twice in a single day. Jo is eager to point out, though, that Seb
The hurdles that successful racers have to jump are far too high to be scaled by nepotism – or even natural talent. Children as young as six devote every waking hour to cultivating the nerves, fitness, and lightening reflexes that it takes to compete in the sport. And even then, success is not guaranteed. Entry into the professional racing world is a costly endevour that can set hopeful champions back millions of pounds. It is this last hurdle that Jo finds most worrying. Seb has an abundance of talent and discipline. Speaking to the Guernsey Press in October, Andy described his son’s performance in the Ginetta Junior Championship at Brands Hatch, saying: “He has achieved more than I ever hoped

is still your typical fifteen-year old boy in some ways. When he’s not racing in real life, he plays online racing games against people all over the world. He has Instagram; Twitter; Facebook. In the tone of a mother who knows she is on the cusp of something, Jo tells me that he has started taking an interest in his hair. Ironically, it is this teenage naturalness that might help Seb make it professionally. His current goal is not just winning more trophies (he’s picked up 29 this year alone) but winning sponsors too. Jo says that, despite public perception, she and Andy can’t afford to finance a burgeoning motorsport career. I sympathise with her: in July of 2015, Raconteur Magazine estimated the cost of getting into Formula One at €8 million. In the last 18 months, it has probably risen. Seb’s phenomenal performance gives him an edge over most hopefuls, and Jo admits that there has been talk of sponsorship behind the scenes. “But,” she tells me a little wearily, “we do find this season’s full of talk.” Andy and Jo are, ultimately, positive. They know that their son is dedicated, talented, and fiercely hard working. That he is also a handsome and personable young man with good manners and a winning smile can’t hurt in the search for sponsorship. In the meantime, Seb just has to keep on doing what he does best – rocking the motorsport world with consistently toplevel performances. Because you have to acknowledge that, whatever happens next, the boy can really drive. Words Theo Leworthy Photography by Mike Brehaut, Creative.gg

The history lesson An “Eisteddfod” is indisputably a Welsh tradition – a festival of literature, music and performance which can be traced back as early as 1176 when the first event was held in Cardigan in Lord Rhys’s castle where poets, and musicians were invited to perform. Today, these festivals continue to play an important role in the Welsh music calendar.
Locally we can trace our own event back to 1921 when our then Bailiff, Sir Edward Ozanne, presided over a meeting where it was proposed to establish a Guernsey Eisteddfod to ‘raise the talents of young people and to foster inter-island rivalry’ – yes our southern neighbours had got in first but our own was soon brought up to a similarly high standard. The first Guernsey Eisteddfod Festival was held on 1 November 1922 at the Little Theatre (those of us old enough to remember the charming venue in Constitution Steps that unfortunately fell victim of fire some decades ago) and with the exception of the war years 1940-1945, it has taken place annually ever since - 2017 marking the 87th event.
TODAY’S EVENT Over the years, the range of classes has grown and been adapted to suit modern day participants and entrants. But traces of the quirkier now long forgotten classes can still be found… In the vast array of silverware (literally hundreds of cups and awards) for the music section for example lurks an attractive trophy which was inscribed by its donator as ‘The Whistling Cup’. These days, graphic design and video photography ensure the event has a more up-to-date feel.

As one of our recent visiting adjudicators said: “The Guernsey Eisteddfod is one of the liveliest and most vibrant festivals I have ever worked with. It is also the widest ranging: whether your talents are in music, dance, speech and drama, cookery, flower arranging, needlework
or even artistic roller skating, there is something for you, whatever your age and interests. Above all, this festival is fun: there is a real sense of community, where everyone involved, both performers and audience, enters into the spirit of the occasion, and has a really enjoyable time.” (David Hoult, Adjudicator 2014). So come and put your skills and talents on show and get your entries in for the 2017 Guernsey Eisteddfod.

GOOD FOR THE ART AND SOUL...
The Guernsey Arts Commission, or GAC, is a charity based company that serves as a creative outlet within Guernsey. Launched in 2008, their aim is to promote the value, relevance and importance of The Arts. Four individuals are responsible for the company’s day to day running: Russ Fossey, Head of Arts Development, Lottie Barnes, Community Arts and Arts Health Manager, Justyna Serwach, Office and Communications Administrator, and Tony Walkington, Accounts Administrator.
The utterance ‘creative outlet’ may sound unsettling to those of us lacking in artistic ability. Connotations of unparalleled ‘cool’ often leave individuals with a societally formed view on the meaning of art. The GAC team are keen to point out that ‘The Arts’ as a term, can come across as elitist. For this
reason, they often ‘use a small a’ in its transcription. The meaning of art signifies a person’s creative application of skill or imagination. Justyna speaks of a pertinent quote by Helena Bonham Carter, saying ‘everything in life is art, from how you dress, the way you love someone, and how you talk, to the way you drink your tea’. The GAC encourages the use of this skill through countless projects across Guernsey, driving The Arts towards being a subject that is both accessible and appealing to all audiences. Recent work with The Oberlands Centre on creating a positive and calming interior for both patients and staff, led to the GAC being shortlisted for the ‘Building Better health care Awards’, in two categories. This charity’s community work is nonstop, something the team are truly proud of. Lottie Barnes details the up and coming 2017 ‘Lantern Parade’. Noticing Guernsey often shuts down during the winter months, Lottie encourages the masses to get involved with lantern-making workshops, held by The GAC, in preparation for the parade on the 25th of March next year. The parade is being held in conjunction with the Sarah Groves foundation. It will be offer feature lanterns, the theatre drummer group ‘Spark’, as well as a grand finale. A fantastic community event both in preparation and occasion. Over the past eight years, the number of events held in Guernsey has seen an increase. Russ Fossey states that in 2008, we had three on-island festivals. This year, 2016 has seen total of twelve. What you may not realise, is that these events are run by their own dedicated team, but funded by the Guernsey Arts Commission Grants Programme.

LIFESTYLE. ART
Without the support of the GAC, a huge number of our valued cultural events would not exist. The Town Carnival, Sark Folk Festival, The Alderney Performing Arts Festival, Guernsey Photography festival, Vale Earth Fair, the Guernsey Literary festival; these are all celebrations of Guernsey life easily taken for granted. Since 2008, the Arts Grants programme has funded more than 215 projects in and around the Bailiwick. More than £551,540 has gone into the development of Guernsey’s ‘Art’ sector, a sector whos importance is becoming increasingly evident. To many whom have not born witness to the benefits of ‘The Arts’, it is a sector that sits low down on a scale of industrial worth. As Justyna Serwach says ‘We have a constant battle to justify the value of the arts in terms of their social and economic value to Guernsey’. The creative industry is a new sector. It’s exponential growth, however, is impossible to ignore. Russ Fossey says ‘Eighteen hundred islanders are employed within the creative bracket’. The GAC is a driving force not only behind community development, but behind Guernsey’s tourism economy and financial growth. The GIC has also been busy placing Guernsey on the world map. Music and Film have shown huge success as part of the Guernsey Arts Commission Grants Programme. Nessi Gomes recently won
the title ‘Best of British unsigned female 2016’, based on the production of her music video single for debut album ‘These Walls’. Demonstrating yet further local talent, the short film ‘Patch’, an international co-production between Guernsey & The Netherlands, won its first award ‘The Award of Merit’, at the LA Global Film Festival. Both of these projects were supported through the GAC Grants Programme. Helping and promoting our local talent is one of the GAC’s priorities. Volunteers make up a significant part of The GACs work. The company are always looking for support. Most importantly, you do not have to be creative! In the meantime, visit The Guernsey Arts Commission’s Facebook or twitter page to find inspiration for winter activity. Words Ellie Cooper Photography Guernsey Arts Commission

SMOKE & MIRRORS As the festive party season invitations roll in, we round up the best products to create a chic & classic smokey eye... by Astrid Mitchison, www.livingologie.com
1.
Start by prepping the eyelid using a cream eyeshadow. This will act as a base for powders to cling to, prolonging their longevity and helping colours to pop. We recommend Ilia Silken Shadow Stick in You Spin Me Round, £23, a smouldering charcoal colour presented in a convenient pen applicator which negates the need for brushes. For a wallet friendly alternative, try No7 Stay Perfect Shade and Define in Gunmetal Grey, £8. We’ve been highly impressed with both of these products so whether you splurge or save, these cream shadows deliver on their claims.
2.
4.
For a five shadow palette that boasts richly pigmented shadows, try Yves Saint Laurent Couture Palette in Rosy Glow or Golden Glow, £34. The warm neutral shades make these palettes a good choice for those looking to create a softer smokey eye, or even one which is appropriate for daytime.
Next, lay down powder eyeshadow. bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 4.0 in The Good Life, £24.17, is a handy quad containing easily blendable, smooth mineral eyeshadows in complementary shades of shimmering cream, pearlescent pink, elegant taupe and smokey black, each with aptly chosen names such as Opulence and Blackout. Use the lightest shade in the inner corner of the eye (around the tear duct) to help brighten eyes and also help to create the illusion of space between close-set eyes. The slimline design of this palette makes it ideal for popping into your bag for those days when you’re heading straight from desk to dance floor and need to transform your look in a hurry.
3.
For a professional finish, use a matte eyeshadow through the crease to ensure that the look is seamlessly and effortlessly blended. We love Smashbox Photo Op Eyeshadow Singles, £16.50, which are available in eight, highquality matte shades.
5.
Alternatively, check out Clinique All About Shadow Quad in Smoke & Mirrors, £23.60, which contains four shades of grey eyeshadows in a formula that’s effortlessly blendable.

7.
Curl eyelashes to help create a wide eyed appearance and finish with lashings of intensely black mascara such as Clarins Be Long Mascara, £17.90, or if you’re on a budget, try Barry M Feature Length Mascara, £4.99.
Next, apply an eyeliner pencil such as Soap & Glory Smoulder Kohl, £5. A line of eyeliner along the upper lash line, drawn as close to the lashes as possible, makes lashes appear thicker. We’ve been impressed with the liner’s waterproof properties and love applying it to the waterline to create an intense and dramatic effect.
Best Comprehensive Palette- For smokey eye addicts, it’s worth investing in a comprehensive palette with a range of shades that enable the creation of different looks. Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette, £38.50, is a bestseller for good reason. Containing twelve powder eyeshadows, there’s the perfect mix of neutrals as well as metallics, cool toned and warm toned shades in a range of hues from pale to dark, along with a deep purple called Smolder for a jewel-toned twist on the classic smokey eye. There’s a good combination of finishes as wellincluding mattes, satins, frosts and glitters. To use the glitter in a glam, grown-up way, simply apply to the centre of the eyelid to make eyes sparkle.
Best for Creatives- We also love the Lancome AudaCITY in London Palette, £42. The palette has been exclusively designed by Lancome’s Creative Director and celebrity makeup artist, Lisa Eldridge, whose clients include the likes of Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Gigi Hadid and Alexa Chung, to name just a few. Inspired by the artist’s hometown of London, the colour scheme resonates with the city and features neutrals and greys alongside hues of purple and green, helping to inspire creativity in those who like to experiment with makeup. Snap it up quickly as it’s limited edition.
Alternatively, reach for cream highlighter, as Benefit brand ambassador, author and makeup artist, Lisa Potter-Dixon recommends, “To add an extra dimension to your smoky eye, pat a cream highlighter- like Benefit’s Watt’s Up!- onto the centre of the eyelid over the eyeshadow. This subtle shimmer will also make your eyes look bigger.” Best for Beginners- For beginners, check out Benefit They’re Real Big Sexy Eye Kit, £22, which contains three eyeshadow duos and a custom shadow blender for effortless eyeshadow application.
Celebrity Makeup Artist, Adam Burrell (whose clients include Little Mix and Nicole Scherzinger)
recommends, “Barry M’s Bold Black Waterproof Eyeliner is my favourite weapon when
creating a quick smoky eye. Line your upper and lower lash line and your waterline and blend for sexy, glam eyes. So easy and long-wearing too! Pair it with the new Feature Length Mascara for high impact, fluttery lashes.”
STOCKLIST Ilia- Plaisirs, Clarins- The Day Salon, No 7, Barry M, Smashbox, Soap & Glory, Bare Minerals - Feel Unique, Urban Decay- www.feelunique.com, Lancome- the palette is exclusively available at www.lancome.co.uk, Clinique, YSL, Benefit- Creasey's

Winter Style with the College of F.E
BIGGER & SEXIER. 2016 gave us velvet, suede, silk and latex. Balmain has topped the trends this year with thigh high boots, military inspired jackets, coats, stunningly structured dresses and skirt combos. Sports wear and outerwear has become the ultimate street style with Adidas and Puma successfully collaborating with celebrities such as Rihanna and Kylie Jenner to launch highly popular lines of trainers and clothing. Vintage is back we've seen a lot of the 90’s trends re-emerge with oversized pinstripe suits and high waisted mom jeans. We even have a taste of 70’s disco glam with David Bowie inspired platform boots. However we look forward to next year with New York Fashion week’s 2017 trends. For next year we're seeing Colour, Seaside stripes and Khaki, sheerer fabrics and layering spaghetti straps over shirts. Platform boots and gorgeous white t-shirt dresses. 2017 is going to be an exciting year for fashion.

THE COMBACK ERA! Go to look for this winter will have to be a cozy, thick jumper dress with a pair of knee high boots - it’s a classic go to look for many celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Zendaya or even Kylie Jenner. The must have accessories this winter or this year would have to be chokers, because everybody knows that the 90s are back! Aside from the 90s, the 60s/70s also make a slow comeback this year with velvet and I’m not just talking about velvet chokers, I’m talking about velvet dresses, shoes ect; but I feel as this will be more popular among the runways and high fashion than what people would normally wear for their everyday look. Combination of high fashion and street style is something we will definitely be seeing a lot of next year. With a trend setters like Zendaya or Kylie Jenner we’ll be seeing a lot of funky colours, very out there, very sexy and yet very classy.
Waritsara Khongyim Creber
COLOURS & CREATIONS. Judging by how this year has gone, we’ve seen the comeback of the 90’s, androgynous, simplistic style and a broad range of varying textured fabric. I think that this year has definitely toned down the colours to more neutral and warm tones which I think will carry on to next year, although I do think that this will only apply to high street fashion that we find in Next, New Look, etc. From the other side though I am seeing a lot of new, up and coming designers who are pushing more boundaries with design and colour choices. I'm very excited and inspired by high fashion and the art of drag and I can see the relationship between the two in fashion as well as makeup which I love because it allows more people to share creations and ideas that might not have been explored otherwise. This is an exciting time for fashion and design coming up and I can't wait to see what happens next year.

LIFESTYLE. AGONY AUNT
AGONY AUNT Do you have an issue you want to get off your chest? Why not get in touch with our very own Agony Aunt, The BBC’s Jenny Kendall-Tobias.
Q. I’m not very good at stuffing. Do you have any tips? It’s all about the technique if you’re to give ultimate satisfaction over the festive period. It doesn’t matter what type of bird you’re keen on. Beware pheasant plucking though – most onerous! I’d go for a goose personally. When it comes to what’s inside, many people make the mistake of stuffing every cavity possible. It’s often said that keeping things moist is the secret to success. Try not to stuff too much or too hard or you could do serious damage. Baste furiously throughout the day (it’ll soothe you if nothing else) and, whatever you do, avoid the three-bird roast as this doesn’t go down very well, particularly with older members of the family. Breast is best and if you spread Guernsey butter all over the area, you won’t be disappointed.
Q: My husband wants me to get into eggnog this Christmas but I don’t know how to go about it. Can you help me please JKT?
Q: I need help with Christmas present ideas? What should I buy the woman I love? That’s easy. Try jewellery, fine champagne, expensive shoes or a voucher for a romantic weekend à deux in Paris. Once you’ve gift-wrapped some or all of that beautifully (some of the more exclusive boutiques may even offer to gift-wrap for you), you might have some time to buy the wife a pair of oven gloves which would be very useful at this time of year.
Q: How can I best effect a smooth passage down my chimney for Santa? Get the brushes up there well before Christmas and have a good old purge. The big man should then slide down easily and all your festive wishes should come true – but only if you’ve been good this year. You know what they say about naughty boys and girls!
It’s all about cream and frantic whipping as you’ll need to go for a good head of froth. People in Alderney know all about this as they indulge in something similar on the first Sunday in May for some strange reason. Use a three-legged stool and some seagull eggs to make your husband’s eggnog a little more Bailiwick-based and you’re bound to have a rum do this Christmas.

POWER AND ELEGANCE WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG! Airtel-Vodafone’s Showroom Supervisor, Jo, reviews the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7. £360 for a top spec Android Smartphone and a VR headset?! It’s no wonder that the new Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 was a big winner at this years’ UK Mobile Choice Awards! It looks, feels, and performs like a top-end smartphone, with a flawless premium glass and aluminium design. The vibrant resolution of the 5.5-inch, 2k AMOLED display absolutely blew me away, and when paired with the Platinum VR headset you get a truly immersive VR experience. I’m not ashamed to say that I spent the best part of a day with my new VR, watching 360° YouTube videos, and battling evil zombies. And the best part? It barely made a dent in the battery life, which lasted an incredible two days between charges. Running on Android Marshmallow the performance is fast and fluid, and the 16MP camera with quick-focus has features such as panoramic, slow-mo videos, and night mode, that easily match the latest premium handsets. If you’re looking for a premium smartphone experience without the premium price tag, then take a closer look at the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7. The Smart Platinum 7 & VR bundle is available exclusively from Airtel-Vodafone on the High Street, with prices starting at only £15 per month with no upfront costs when you take out an airtime plan. Pop in-store and give it a spin.
MATT’S TOP TIP FROM AIRTEL-VODAFONE
HOW DO I MAKE SURE I HAVE A DATA CONNECTION WHEN ROAMING? If you need data while off-island, you may need to adjust your handset settings. Follow these easy steps to activate your phone for data roaming: • • •
• Firstly, make sure data roaming is activated in your settings. Set your data preference to 3G. 4G roaming isn’t currently available from any local provider. Input your networks APN (access point name) in your network settings. For Airtel-Vodafone the APN name is airtel-ci-gprs.com. Finally, always check data roaming rates with your provider to avoid unexpected bill shock when you return.

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.
What is The Island Development Plan (IDP)? The IDP is Guernsey's new 10-year plan for land planning policy, which was approved by the States of Guernsey in November. The IDP advises on what can be built, where, how buildings can be used and also predicts future changes and challenges for development across the island. The purpose of policies like this is to balance Guernsey's social, environmental and economic interests to make sure that the best decisions are made for the public and the future of the island.
James Le Gallez James is an expert in planning, building and urban design. He is a highly experienced Town Planner with postgraduate degrees in Town and Country Planning and Law. James has 15 years’ experience of both public and private planning practice in Guernsey, Jersey and the UK.
The plan aims to create a "socially inclusive, healthy and economically strong island", to offer more flexibility via the application of a clearer, more transparent policy framework. The idea being that if there is a policy gateway, then development will be allowed.
Mourant Ozannes’ highly skilled and experienced Guernsey property law team is focused on providing expert residential and commercial property advice and a truly personal service. Combining an enviable speed of response with technical expertise, Mourant Ozannes works tirelessly on your behalf and keeps you fully informed at every stage of your transaction.
What's in the IDP? In summary, one main aim, six objectives, five parts, nine annexes and 77 policies. However, the IDP is layered to make it "as easy to understand as possible" and not a million miles away from our sister islands' 'one plan' system. So what's changed? Our politicians supported more affordable housing, the glasshouse policy was amended, parking debated, leaving tourism uses lightened, Conservation Areas expanded, Agricultural Priority Areas introduced, outside “Centre” retail scrutinized and parts of the coast are now a "Foreshore" (eh?).. What does this mean for islanders? In short, a more objective yet flexible framework which sets high but reasonable burdens of proof on any applicant in order to gain planning permission. Yet, even where there is no policy gateway, the IDP contains an 'Exceptions' policy which can consider "forms of development that were not envisaged at the time of drafting the IDP". This is also combined with a legal requirement to monitor and review the IDP "to maintain sufficient flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances".
+
ANY ISSUES YOU'D LIKE RAISED?
In conclusion, the IDP is the 'flexible' planning future for the next 10 years - hopefully that flexibility (meaning an “ability or willingness to be modified”) will be able to provide the certainty that many applicants and industries require.

Indulgent Interiors I
n today's world, many of us are focused on the ‘what's next’, rather than the ‘what is’. We keenly read up on the latest designer trends, buy magazines that tell us that in 2017 the colour is dark green, and that copper and marble are out. So flippant are the trends that many of them only last a season (yes, only 3 months!)
However, according to Sally West and Claire Clermont from Clermont West Interiors, Guernsey residents are more likely to buck the trends, instead focusing on creating a style that can last many years. “People tend to look at books and we help them add to what they already have. They might get inspiration from a friend or magazine”. One style that has had a lasting influence since emerging in the 1950s is Scandinavian design. Initially created from a social-ethos of providing design at affordable prices, it now has global appeal. In Guernsey however, it's seldom seen as a style in its own right, but rather an influence that is borrowed from. Scandi-design can be defined by its principles, which were all about creating a lifestyle. These included; function, simplicity, use of natural materials, light, neutral palette, eco-friendly and a sense of nature. Much of the design available today draws on many of these principles, and this is true even in Guernsey. Kitchen designer, Terry Lowe from Guernsey and UK business, Cucine Interiors, has noticed the Scandinavian influence on the way he designs and the sustainable materials he uses. “I'm always advising clients to put their kitchen island where it will face out onto nature. ''It has a calming effect. I also encourage the creation of natural light for the room”. Clermont West have also found that there are elements of the influence in some of the furnishings and furniture that they supply: “Designers Guild furniture, for example, is very Scandi-influenced, but depending on what the customer wants, we can add warmth and a more inviting feel with the choice of material”. However, even with a lasting design trend such as the Scandinavian design movement, people very often will not go after a full look. “People want to mix it up. Our wool rugs in neutral colours are very popular and are quite Scandi, but mostly people look for things that they like and can incorporate into their homes. Often people have collected things over the years, or from their travels and it can all work together”, explain Sally and Claire. So it seems that anything goes when it comes to designing the look for your interior. So where do you start? Clermont West have many years experience of working with Guernsey clients and suggest a simple approach: “Start with one room and take it one room at a time. For many people it can be too daunting to take on a whole house in one go. Although we can of course do this. We suggest the bedroom or lounge first, as this is where you spend the most time and, in particular, the master bedroom, as this is the place where you'll start and end your day, so you want it to be nice”.

As I was speaking to Sally and Claire one of their clients popped in to return some fabric books, which was neatly explained to me by Sally, “we offer a type of library service so that people can take the books home and take the time to consider them...Some people think they know what they want, but once they start looking, they often change their minds”. After seeing the rows of fabric and wallpaper books, I think I could see why. So whether you know what you want, or think you know what you want, or you're not sure at all, remember that you can completely change your look with little cost and effort, Claire explained as she spoke from personal experience; “It's much easier to update walls than anything else and this can change everything. I've recently painted my walls a much darker colour, a rich blue, and it's incredible how light the floorboards and furnishings now look. It's very different”. So if you want to adopt a design trend and you're not sure it will last, perhaps keep it to the walls.
THIS IS NOT A KITCHEN THIS IS ART Cucine Interiors has launched its own exclusive range of contemporary kitchens, an exciting concept where no two kitchens can ever be the same! JONTY
ERRIDGE 27 ASSISTANT MANAGER AUDIT AT KPMG
What made you choose to work for KPMG? As a sports science graduate, I spent three years working in professional tennis for a company called Hawk-Eye who provide electronic line calling (the cartoon world you see when watching Wimbledon!). As much fun as that was, I was always conscious of wanting a career with more longevity and stability and KPMG was a name I had seen many times from sports sponsorships. When I relocated to the island, finance seemed to tick a lot of boxes and KPMG became a legitimate option. The ‘big 4’ are all well-known and respected for the quality of training and prospects they offer but I can honestly say the people were the clincher for KPMG. The culture was head and shoulders above the competition and I haven’t looked back since. What does your average day look like? The age old saying of ‘work hard, play hard’ is evident at KPMG. The work is challenging but there is a great coaching culture. The work is mostly computer based (you quickly become an excel wiz!) but client interaction is also a large part of the role, allowing you to develop softer skills also. The busiest period is January to April but this is counteracted by KPMG’s policy of shorter summer hours when less busy. The ‘play’ side is really evidenced by the busy calendar put together by the sports and social committee which range from sponsoring a range of sports teams in local business leagues to hosting both a winter and a summer ball for all staff.
What professional training do you undertake? KPMG offer their trainees the chance to work towards either their ACA or ACCA professional accounting qualifications. This includes full study support whereby you are given the time off to attend taught courses as well as being encouraged to take leave around your exam periods to ensure you have sufficient time to study. Both offer great prospects at the end of the process with slightly different time pressures and teaching techniques but as an ACCA alumni, I have to say I am slightly biased towards their way of studying! Where is your journey taking you? KPMG are keen to develop their staff and pride themselves on the fact that there is a clear path from fresh trainee to potential MD. This is evidenced by great promotion opportunities locally as well as a strong network of KPMG offices globally which offer secondments to all corners of the globe. Since I have been here, I have known people go on secondment to New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and New Zealand so who knows where I could end up!! Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? One thing I would say to school leavers is to strongly consider the finance options available to you locally, it is a great opportunity to learn as you earn straight from school. Equally, if university is what you go for, this is a great graduate option to have at the back of your mind and as I have proven, you don’t need an accountancy degree to get into this industry further down the line.
MORE ABOUT
KPMG
We provide audit, tax and advisory services to a multitude of clients including large multinationals, public bodies, well-known brands and private individuals. We offer challenging careers and training contracts to the island’s students and graduates to ensure our people are able to provide the exceptional service our clients expect. Our success depends upon the quality of our people. Every day, we look to inspire confidence and empower change. Join us, and you could too. A work experience placement with the firm helped me to ensure I was applying to the right organisation. I decided against going to university for various reasons, and KPMG offered the opportunity to gain a highly respected qualification whilst working and earning at the same time.

ADAM
NADOLSKI 24 ASSISTANT MANAGER AT DELOITTE
What made you choose to work for Deloitte? After deciding on a complete change in direction following the completion of my degree, a career in accountancy stood out to me. The Deloitte Graduate programme caught my attention, offering a comprehensive training programme with the opportunity for rapid career progression and international travel. Speaking to new starters at a careers event they ran highlighted the great social aspect there is to life while working at Deloitte. Two years on and it was definitely the right decision for me. What does your average day look like? No two days are the same: working in audit gives me exposure to a wide range of clients, from insurance to property. Each audit client has its own specially selected team; this variety allows me to interact with lots of different colleagues, undertake lots of different tasks and learn skills earlier in my career than my counterparts in city offices. Staff social events happen at least once a month so there’s always something going on and I very quickly got to know everyone in the office. What professional training do you undertake?
I started my ICAEW training after my first week in the office. The qualification consists of 15 exams taken over three years and I am fully supported by Deloitte with a dedicated training manager. The course is taught at BPP in blocks of two to three weeks. The training providers are fantastically supportive and you can contact them 24/7 if you have any questions. Where is your journey taking you? Working in audit at Deloitte has provided the best possible start to my career and provided me with experience of multiple industries that I wouldn’t have had elsewhere. I have one year left to complete my exams after which I will be qualified, which will give me near limitless opportunities thanks to the recognition the ICAEW qualification receives. I am hopeful I will be able to take a secondment to the Deloitte office in New Zealand for a couple of years. Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? Be prepared to work hard but most of all enjoy the experience. The training to become a Chartered Accountant is certainly intense and requires a lot of self-motivation but there will always be someone there to help, all you have to do is ask.

Invest with Bob Acknowledge “The whole investment industry is obsessed with learning more and more about less and less, until we know absolutely everything about nothing” Behavioural finance has emerged as popular topic over recent years with more and more people now making a conscious effort to understand how our emotions impact the decisions we make. When James Montier coined the above, it’s fair to say he hit the nail firmly on the head in exposing one of the biggest threats to long-term investment success – inherent human behaviour. More specifically, James was referring to our burning desire to fully comprehend every action – even in cases where no rationale exists. This most likely stems from a young age where the importance of “trying your best” is drilled into us. However, the harsh truth is that such persistence is often fruitless. Despite never quite seeing eye-to-eye with my PE teacher during my school years he actually summed this issue up pretty well. I cannot count the number of times he howled “practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent” homage to the fact that success and effort are not always directly correlated. Unfortunately, even with his perceived wisdom, it seemed he was unable to distinguish between the two; with the effort I was committing (which admittedly, in hindsight, was probably misdirected) seemingly going unnoticed whilst his rage would quickly build at my apparent lack of skills. In a similar manner, many investors expend a copious amount of energy on trying to predict the future, often choosing to focus on factors beyond their control. The belief that devoting more time to forecasting the unknown will automatically result in better investment returns is a common misconception within the investment industry. In fact, forming an investment decision on the basis of such wild speculation can quickly hinder your performance – particularly when such predictions regularly turn out to be incorrect. With that in mind we openly acknowledge the fact that we do not possess any special ability to reliably forecast the outcome of often highly speculative (and at times wildly unpredictable) political and economic events. Such acceptance
BOB TANNAHILL, Ravenscroft Investment Management prevents us from becoming distracted by outcomes over which we have no control. Instead it allows us to focus the entirety of our attention on the fundamentals of our underlying holdings. Unfortunately, this does not eradicate the fact that even a good initial idea might turn sour. It is important to accept that such an occurrence does not immediately label you a bad investor even the best managers lay the occasional rotten egg. Even Warren Buffett, arguably the greatest investor of all time, only has a success rate in the region of 65% - or put another way, over a third of his stock decisions have so far proven to be unprofitable. However, what is important is how you respond in the face of such adversity. This leads us nicely on to another behavioural finance concept - anchoring. This details how investors become fixated on the first piece of information they come across when forming investment decisions. A common form is price anchoring, which describes how investors become wedded to the purchase (cost) price of a stock. This prevents investors from selling a stock at a loss even when all the evidence suggests that the holding is not going to help them meet their long-term investment objectives. This is an emotional reaction and emphasises how opposed investors are to accepting short-term losses even at the expense of generating longerterm gains.
can be particularly dangerous, as an investor, if it prevents us from being able to analyse an investment opportunity objectively. Clearly these factors are a challenge faced by all of us and so the question is; what can we do about these ingrained psychological biases? Being human, we have to accept that we can’t just turn them off, we have to find ways to live with them. For us this is where process comes in. By making decisions in a highly structured manner we can overcome impulse emotional responses. For example, fear may ordinarily prevent us from buying quality assets following a sudden fall – in the worst cases it may even trick us into becoming sellers. This reaction is illogical. If the share price of a great firm falls, for factors unrelated to the underlying company, we should in fact be buyers not sellers- we are now getting access to a quality company at a more attractive valuation. Acknowledging that this “obvious” response is not likely to be our emotional instinctive reaction is the first step to overcoming it.
This perception can lead us to seek additional evidence that confirms our viewpoint. We naturally tend to favour articles that support our thinking (or newspapers that share our opinions) whilst simultaneously disregarding those with opposing views. Typically, as we grow increasingly confident we become more dismissive of alternative views. Such a phenomenon is known as confirmation bias and #10. DEC 2016 - JAN 2017. THE ACKNOWLEDGE ISSUE

Fiduciary partner Kellyann Ozouf won the gold award for Lawyer of the Year - IFC Partner, senior associate Kerrie Le Tissier won the silver award for Lawyer of the Year - IFC Associate and group partner and head of the fiduciary team Angela Calnan took home the bronze award for Outstanding Individual of the Year. Citywealth introduced the Future Leaders awards following the success of the 2015 Tomorrow Club awards with the aim of championing young professionals in the wealth sector and highlighting the under 40 leaders of today and tomorrow. CAREY OLSEN OPENS HONG KONG OFFICE Leading offshore law firm Carey Olsen has opened in Hong Kong as part of the continued expansion of its network in Asia. The Hong Kong practice has a dispute resolution and insolvency focus, with partner Michael Makridakis having recently relocated to Hong Kong from the firm's Cayman Islands office, where he established and led its dispute resolution and insolvency team. The opening of the Hong Kong office in November 2016 follows the successful launch of the firm's Singapore office by lead Asia partner, Linda Lee, in October last year. Carey Olsen recently expanded its corporate legal practice in Singapore with the relocation of partner Anthony McKenzie from the firm’s Cayman office. The Hong Kong office will advise on the full spectrum of contentious, semicontentious and offshore advisory work. This will include domestic and international restructuring and insolvency,
corporate and commercial disputes, banking and financial services litigation, trusts litigation as well as fraud, asset tracing and regulatory disputes. Michael Makridakis, who will continue to work alongside Carey Olsen's dispute resolution and insolvency practices in the British Virgin Islands and Cayman as well as Guernsey and Jersey, said: "The growth in demand for offshore legal services in Asia has created a parallel demand for offshore litigation services and we have an increasing number of clients requiring advice in relation to disputes and insolvency matters in the region. "Our Hong Kong office provides clients and referrers with access to offshore dispute resolution and insolvency specialists who are in the same time zone and who have a thorough understanding of the Asian market." Linda Lee, Carey Olsen's head of Asia, said: "The provision of offshore dispute resolution and insolvency services in Hong Kong complements our corporate, finance and investment funds offering in Singapore and begins the next chapter of Carey Olsen's Asia story." Carey Olsen's Guernsey managing partner, John Greenfield, said: "Our wellestablished global dispute resolution and litigation practice covers Guernsey, Jersey, BVI and Cayman law and we have seen significant growth in our teams across the group. "Extending our footprint into Hong Kong is a natural step in response to the increasing demand from our clients for the provision of offshore dispute resolution and insolvency services in the region." With 49 partners and 200 lawyers, Carey Olsen is one of the largest offshore law firms. It provides advice on British Virgin Islands (BVI), Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey law from a network of eight international offices covering all time zones and key financial markets.

LOGICALIS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICE Logicalis is this month celebrating 10 years of iConnect. The Channel-Island based firm set up its own fully managed hosted business service during the early days of cloud computing in 2006. Today the secure hosted platform has over
1,500 users. iConnect covers core IT needs, with Logicalis providing the hardware, software, maintenance upgrades and infrastructure support. This sort of cloud based service removes the need for managing desktop PCs, allowing companies to get rid of a costly IT infrastructure with traditional servers. Instead, with iConnect, staff access their desktop business applications such as Microsoft Office and email, securely over the Web at any time through an Internet browser on their PC, laptop or tablet. Jonathan Ward, Account Manager, Logicalis said: “Cloud computing has revolutionized the way companies interact with IT. The cloud frees up office space, and staff time. People can access the data they need, wherever they are in the world, which is a huge advantage for international businesses, for companies where staff travel regularly, or even for local businesses where staff work from different locations.
your premises, your staff will be able to work from anywhere. Tom Bale, Business Development and Technical Director, Logicalis, said: “In the past 10 years the cloud has changed the way people do business so much it is hard to imagine a time before it. Some businesses e.g. Netflix, Airbnb, and Uber, rely entirely on the cloud and couldn’t exist, or indeed run the sorts of business they do without it.” To celebrate iConnect’s 10th anniversary, Logicalis is offering the first 10 new customers 10 services free of change. These include: disaster recovery, email encryption, 24/7 support, email archiving, cyber security training, service desk support, advisor services, user onboarding, fixed migration fee, and long term back up.
“Hosted Desktop applications look and behave like applications that are managed by in-house systems but the software and data that employees access are instead hosted in our highly resilient data centers. We have worked closely with clients over the past 10 years to understand their needs and experiences so we can offer them a real advantage.” As well as helping businesses save money on upfront IT investment, hosted cloud based services can give smaller businesses the levels of support and technical ability normally only available through major packages and systems. Cloud service can also be very useful for disaster recovery, as if you lose access to

URE T N E V D A Y R O T S BEDTIME HARITY C R O F Y E N O M E TO RAIS AN EXCITING mission to become superheroes, conjured up at bedtime by two Jersey boys and their father, will raise money for two Channel Islands charities. Colin Macleod, the Chief Executive Officer of The Channel Islands Cooperative Society, has published his first book that follows the adventures of his two sons Harris and Lewis on the day they are whisked off to a secret land, far beyond the skies and transformed into superheroes HammerHead and Captain StinkyPants. ‘Like a lot of dads, my bedtime routines with the boys have been dominated by storytelling. Harris, Lewis and I have been fairly chaotic with the way that we have imagined bedtime stories and we often take it in turns to create different parts of a story. This fairly random way of discovering our collective imaginations has, over the years, led to some themes emerging. We have built characters, worlds, emotions and dreams together at bedtime,’ he said.
Every double page spread needs to end with a cliff hanger. On so it goes on. In the end, I think I have saved 70 or 80 different versions of the story as I worked and reworked it and it has taken many, many months.’ Mr Macleod went on to praise his team of Susan Lintell and Anna Anderson. ‘I was very fortunate to have some brilliant help. Susan is a fantastic illustrator who worked tirelessly to ensure that my characters were brought to sparkling life, beautifully and gently. Anna’s eye for design, colour and drama has meant that the final book is much richer visually than I could have ever imagined.’ But to have the printed version in his hands made that work worthwhile. ‘It has been a lot of work but, now that it has been published, I have to admit to feeling both proud and relieved. I am glad that that dusty old shoebox that my children will discover in their loft in
‘I thought it might be nice if I wrote some of those stories down. I wanted to have a record of the stories we told together so that one day, when my children have their children, they might discover a manuscript in a dusty old box in the loft and smile. They could tell the next generation that these were the stories that they created with their dad.’ But as Mr Macleod finessed the bedtime ramblings, he decided to go one step further and publish a book that will go on sale this week with all profits being split between Help A Guernsey Child and the Variety Club of Jersey. ‘Deciding to publish a book has been a huge opportunity to learn. I entered a world that proved to be far more complicated than I had ever imagined. When you read children’s stories written by others, you have no idea of the complexity and thought that has gone into those words, page layouts and illustrations,’ he said. ‘Children’s books contain very few redundant words. Each phrase must propel the story forwards. You must show but not tell. Each illustration must encourage the reader to turn the page.

30 or 40 years’ time will now contain a book that has ensured that the memories of our bedtime story adventures of HammerHead and Captain StinkyPants will endure and I hope hundreds of other children will enjoy sharing our adventure whilst raising money for children in the Channel Islands who are less fortunate. ‘From a professional perspective, I have a great job as CEO of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society. It’s probably the best job in the Channel Islands. It’s a privilege to lead an organisation that holds a very special place in Channel Islands’ life and makes a considerable and long-lasting impact. But personally, my two boys are my greatest achievement and they challenge me and inspire me on a daily basis. First and foremost this book, which has been a real labour of love, is a gift to them.’ Meet HammerHead and Captain StinkyPants is exclusively available from all Channel Islands Co-operative Society stores priced at £9.99.

Where the magic happens... For our final Workspaces of 2016 we go to our delightful friends at Colour Monster; where GSYLife is printed. Colour Monster has been a great member of the team; they’ve been printing GSYLife since they got their new binding machine. (That’s the machine that’s used to turn pages into the book like finished product you see before you now.) You won’t find many of the classic ‘Inkjet’ cartridges that you have to order, find out they’re the wrong size, before adding to that stock pile you have in that cupboard (You know the one, with the cables you never use that always seem to have a USB on one end). The huge vats of the stuff make that look likes child’s play! We then come to, as one colleague termed it, ‘The Slicer’. Remember the giddy feeling you had at school when trusted to use the guillotine? Well actual TEACHERS would have that feeling when looking at this beast. With an awesome cutting power to do stacks of sheets at once, you won’t see Miss using this at the Forest primary any time soon…! To be local and still priced competitively against bigger UK suppliers has always impressed us. That and they’re a thoroughly nice bunch! So if it’s some business cards or our monthly mag, you should go and say hi and check out all this kit; you’ll be amazed.
