#01 – THE FUTURE ISSUE – FEBRUARY 2016

UPFRONT. EDITOR’S NOTE.

07

WELCOME

just a few years ago people working within the print industry desisted in a mass panic over the uncertainty of its future. Many publishers and readers started to migrate over to new digital devices under the assumption that going forward this was going to be the preferred method of media consumption. From early 2008, initial statistics suggested that e-publishing sales were going to rise significantly over the coming years. Naturally this news raised the alarm bells for all parties concerned, particularly for long-standing print houses that had been in business for decades, some (one way or another) for centuries. Publications panicked over the possibility of having to shift the reading experience away from a working format that had been the stable datum for generations, and those employed within the industry feared for their jobs as the market appeared to be saying that their services could be surplus to requirements. The trend was showing that print was going to follow in the footsteps of music, and that it would soon be overtaken by the digital apocalypse. An upward spike in digital sales allowed analysts the confidence to overtly predict that digital media publishing would overtake print sales at some point roughly by the year 2015. The future decline of the print industry seemed inevitable, many feared that insolvency was imminent. However things didn’t entirely pan out quite as expected... During the beginning of 2009 I witnessed something contrary to what the experts were so confidently suggesting. At a time when the recession was at its worst and in a region of the world that was very strongly hit by the financial meltdown, a brand new compact daily newspaper was launched in Portugal. Let’s not forget this was a time when families homes were being repossessed, banks were collapsing and almost the entire publishing industry believed that print was absolutely dying a death. Because of this I knew that this new publication called Informação (Portuguese for information) came about because either the publishers and the financial backers were a few tinnies short of a

‘WE NOW SEE MAGAZINES AND BOOKS AS OBJECTS OF DESIGN, WE ARE PROUD OF THEM, WE ORGANISE THEM NEATLY ONTO OUR SHELVES, WE LOUNGE THEM AROUND OUR HOMES LIKE DECORATIVE PIECES...’ six pack or something very special and ground-breaking was about to emerge. Which ever it was this was going to be one of the biggest gambles I had personally witnessed in recent print history. I was working for a periodical in southern Spain at the time, quite close to the Portuguese border, so I was fortunate to be able to obtain hard copies of Informação early on. This allowed me to observe closely how it was being received during a time of heavy financial duress. As a magazine and print fan, I can quite honestly say that I admired this publication from day one. It was very different from any newspaper I had read hitherto. The first thing I noticed was its dimensions, it was roughly two thirds the size of A3, much smaller than normal tabloids at the time and it was saddled stitched, so it held like a magazine. The design was clean and uninterrupted; meaning it was easy to read and to the point. The imagery was crisp and the well thought-out info-graphics complimented the editorial, delivering key information effortlessly. It was a design and editorial masterpiece and readers across the world welcomed it with open arms. Sales steadily grew and it is now the favoured daily digest for millions. Informação also went on to win every award it could win in the design world, and I believe this publication was one of the leading examples of why we started

#01. FEBRUARY 2016. THE FUTURE ISSUE.

to look at print publishing differently and in-turn revive an industry which previously appeared to be doomed. It wasn’t long into its second year before I started to notice leading British newspapers attempt to copy the format of Informação. The biggest point I took from all this was that people didn’t necessarily prefer digital, we just needed to re-jig how we did print, it was time for a change. There is an inherent importance and heritage to print, a tactile relationship we share only with a printed and bound book or magazine, the smell of the paper fanned towards you as the sound of the page turns over your finger. These things can never be experienced through a digital interface. Towards the end 2014 digital sales began to level off, and print sales began to rise to a whole new level. Publishers across the world are now producing and selling more bespoke, creative and tangible paper titles than ever before. We now see magazines and books as objects of design, we are proud of them, we organise them neatly onto our shelves, we lounge them around our homes almost as decorative pieces. Print isn’t dead, it’s just being reinvented. This is the very essence of what we want to achieve with GSYLIFE, we love print and we want to merge these changes and the new found appreciation for publications with our love of Guernsey’s culture and its future enhancement. We have introduced a new easy to navigate structure, broken into 4 main sections; Upfront, Lifestyle, Property and Business. Each section is printed on its own stock of sustainable paper, creating a new tactile experience as you flick through the magazine. Our 10 issues a year will be classy, informative and collectable. They are commissioned, edited and designed from our office in St Peter Port and call on a Bailiwick-wide team of staff editors and over 20 creative contributors, briefing Guernsey on observations that matter. My team and I invite you to enjoy exploring the following pages as much as we loved putting them together. Ross Weston. Editor-in-chief.

DID YOU KNOW?

comparison: Temperature

roughly about 65 million years ago an earth-changing cosmic impact devastated the planet ending the age of dinosaurs in what is now officially known as the United Mexican States (news to us too!). A meteorite roughly the length of Guernsey (7 miles) smashed into our planet and created such an earth-shattering explosion, a gargantuan crater more than 110 miles wide was left in its wake. It seems small things do pack quite a big punch after all. As much as we love dinosaurs, the good news is; without this Guernsey-sized meteorite impact, there would have been no space for mankind (as we know it) to have evolved at all!

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH Photography by BEN FIORE Location COBO AT LOW TIDE

When shooting landscapes Ben is very aware of having a detail in both the foreground and the background, this creates the impression that the image has a lot of depth. The long exposure shows the movement of the sea which creates vertical lines, further emphasising the aspect and scale of the image. Keeping the exposure to 30 seconds meant the camera has takes in enough light to show the stars and rocks, any longer and it would of recorded the movement of the stars. Ben plans to do a new series of images showcasing the galaxy from around the coastline of Guernsey. benfiorephotography.com

PRACTICE NEWS Vets4Pets has moved into a beautiful new state of the art premises in Les Merriennes, just a stone’s throw from our old practice. By LES VAN BLERK MRCVS, BVSC, BSC(HONS)

we are very excited to be sponsoring the ‘Me & My Pet’ feature in the GSYLIFE magazine and look forward to meeting you and your four legged friends. In our new premises we are able to offer you the best health care in our brand new facilities with new surgical techniques not available anywhere else on the island. We recently performed the first laparoscopic bitch spay in the Channel Islands, which is more beneficial for the patient as the surgery is performed through small incisions making it less invasive and speeds up the recovery process. To minimise stress for cats we now offer separate cat and dog consultation rooms, creating a more relaxed and safe environment for your pet. The practice is also equipped with two operating theatres, an isolation ward, ECG equipment, a specialised dental suite and a comprehensive in-house laboratory which allows a range of analytical tests to be run on-site. In addition, we have separate cat and dog wards for your pets and what’s more, we provide 24 hour care to all our patients. Within the coming months we will also be in receipt of a CT scanner which will be the first of its kind in the Channel Islands for animals. This means we will be able to carry out important diagnostic tests on your pet without the need to send them across to the UK. We’re very proud of our new practice and welcome anyone to come and have a look around. vets4pets.com/guernsey 01481 239101

WHAT WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE FROM GUERNSEY IN 2016? The future of this islands lies within us all, ‘what will be will be’ some might say. However, most will feel that may leave a little too much to the ‘ol mystery machine... we asked a recognisable character and some of our readers what they want to see from Guernsey in the near future. Words by JOHN GOLLOP Illustration by MELISSA GILLIVER

‘WELCOME NEW PEOPLE TO OUR SHORES AND CULTURE WHO EMBRACE OUR WAY OF LIFE.’ JOHN GOLLOP, POLITICIAN

WHAT YOU SAY... FRANCES HEAUME 19, STUDENT

I would love to see more public art exhibitions, installations and performance art around Guernsey, preferably showcasing local talent, as it would be great to put Guernsey on the “cultural map” in 2016. BEN SMITH 23, CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT

I’d like to see change a wider acceptance of tattoos and piercings from both employers and the public alike, with stories of bars refusing entry and people being turned down jobs because someone is expressing themselves in a creative and personal way. BRIAN REDHEAD, 55, RETIRED

Strong political leadership with decisive decisions and sticking to them, more positive spins on our beautiful Island and Guernsey going out there and selling its self to the world, we live in a very special and truly beautiful Island.

we need to really support the artistic, digital and creative future industries from the Greenhouse and digital hub innovation sectors, they not only supplement excellently the corporate and financial legal sectors but offer new careers, fortunes, growth and pathways. They add and become our evolving identity. But we need to be a green ribbon not a red tape isle with more of a cooperative, entrepreneurial, youthful and forward looking society. Moreover our culture needs to change as we need to be less bureaucratic, more of a can do mentality and stop living in a mythical past! We as an island have to make a brand new political system and departmental structure work, beginning with the selection in early May of a new Mr (or Ms) President of the political leadership Chairing Policy and Resources as the replacement “Chief Minster”! And let us hope, work towards & facilitate a more engaging and representative assembly with greater input from women, minorities and people with something new to say. Finally it would be great to see St Peter Port revitalized and transformed into a kind of working vibrant Gallery town with a powerful reborn old quarter, new lighting, improving bus services and new initiatives helping to build our future. It would also be nice to encourage more good live music, balls, and carnival fun, as long as the sea services can be Liberated to deliver the people, visitors and roadie kit! So to summarise on a personal level, we can fall in love with the town and Guernsey all over again!

THE ‘WHAT IF’ EXPERIMENT Planning the infrastructure of a neighbourhood, town or city is a mammoth task, all factors have to be considered and weighed against each other, hats off to those that do it successfully. We thought for a bit of fun, why not think out of the box and imagine an east coast with no restrictions, what could that look like? Words by ROSS WESTON 3D visualisations by KARL DORFNER

Pictured GUERNSEY EAST COAST An experimental artists impression of what we could do with the east coast. *Name coined to the sewage piping works that was temporarily erected over Les Banques.

before anyone gets the wrong idea about this article, lets be totally clear, this is just a bit of fun, simply a silly experiment with infrastructure and town planning. This is not an official submission to the IDC, and our intentions are not to cause any upset to anyone who may choose to over-imagine how they might be effected by this, much like a movie, these 3d visualisations are not real, they are just pictures, that said I believe we can be fairly certain that our outlandish ideas would never actually reach fruition. I first discussed the idea of this project with Karl from Dorfmeister Studios (an architectural 3d visualisation company) about 3 months ago. I said ‘we have the resources and software to hand why don’t we have a bit of fun and imagine what an unrestricted future-Guernsey could look like?’. He promptly responded with great excitement over the concept and it wasn’t long before we were bouncing radical ideas between each other. what did we want to include? Firstly, it was important that we removed any financial, environmental or legal restraints and let our minds get creative. Although we have tried to consider these attributes where possible, we simply are not trained in those fields. We needed to consider adding elements that would make life easier and more streamlined, as well as include areas that have visual appeal, and with a thinking out-of-thebox head on, we wanted to include some exciting entertainment areas for all. what did we come up with? Bay was chosen as it is the largest continuous coastal strip near town and after pooh bridge* got all the headlines in 2015, we felt the beach needed a bit of an ego boost. We started off with North Beach and Salary corner car parks; by digging down and developing underground car parking we could level off and lawn the ground level to create new green space. Just past Salary corner we built a large seawall water-break running in the shape of a boomerang all the way to Bulwer Avenue. Admittedly this is a rather epic construction to say the least, but as I said earlier, all restraints are off! This boomerang landmass would act as the foundations for our imaginations to run wild and on the following spread you will find a numbered key that details the many new installations that we decided to introduce. Got some ideas of your own, please share them with us, email: hello@gsylife.gg

NUMBER OF NEW POTENTIAL ST JOHN VOLUNTEERS EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

2016 SAFFERY ROTARY WALK Registration has officially opened for the 2016 Saffery Rotary Walk, Guernsey’s only around-the-island walk. For the very first year in the walks history there will also be the option for people to participate within a relay team. Organisers are hoping to appeal to members of local companies and organisations to enter as part of a group. There will be a special prize for the relay team who raises the most money at the special awards presentation in September. Each team can have a maximum of seven people for an early bird price of

£100 which had increased to £140 after 1 January. The Saffery Rotary Walk takes place on Saturday 11 June and the organisers hope to get a record number of participants. “The 2015 walk raised more than £46,000 which was pretty impressive. However, by introducing the relay teams in 2016 we hope this will help boost entries and subsequent funds raised,” said Simon Milsted, chair of the Saffery Rotary Walk. The Saffery Rotary Walk, has just undergone a re-brand to coincide with the launch of next year’s walk. Participants can register through the event’s website: www. scrwalk.org.gg via the online sign-up and fundraising platform Race Nation, which also enables people to donate through a secure online server.

following the success of last November’s St John recruitment day, over 65 people have come forward to train as a volunteer with more coming forward every day. The event received a great amount of support from the exiting St John volunteers and employed staff who showcased what their roles entailed. These potential new recruits have signed up to volunteer for a number of roles from providing first aid cover at events to administration support. The first induction weekend for the new volunteers has already taken place and a second weekend has been organised for early in the New Year. All new recruits will initially be trained in emergency first aid and will then go on to learn enhanced and specific skills needed for their particular volunteering role. Vanessa Spiller, chief executive officer of the Commandery of St John, said: “We are delighted with the response so far but are still looking for more volunteers to join the organisation. Volunteering with St John is a great way to give something back to the community, develop vital lifesaving skills and join a team of dedicated, like-minded people. Even if some of our new recruits are unsuccessful in completing their specialist training for any reason they will have been given the ability and confidence to deliver emergency first aid. “Volunteers are an essential part of our organisation and with their help we can continue to provide lifesaving care and support for the community. We would like to thank everyone who attended or was involved in our recruitment day – it was a great success.” If you would like to become a volunteer for St John email bailiwickhq@sja.org to receive an information pack and registration form or visit the volunteer section of the website www.stjohn.gg.

FUNDRAISING EFFORT INSPRIRED BY OWN CANCER RECOVERY local resident tess mawson has been inspired by her own journey with breast cancer to fundraise for two organisations that supported her through her treatment, with the help of her employer. Mrs Mawson, who works for local firm Saffery Champness, was first diagnosed with stage two aggressive breast cancer in August 2012. After several sessions of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, she beat the disease. For her 45th birthday, Mrs Mawson decided to fundraise for the Breast Cancer Care Unit and the Bulstrode Oncology Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. After organising a fund raiser with the help of her good friends Cathy and Steve Plumley, her employer, Saffery Champness, doubled the amount raised at the event, presenting both organisations with a cheque for £500. Mrs Mawson said: “I received a fantastic amount of support throughout my treatment particularly from the Breast Care Unit and the oncology team, both of whom were instrumental to my recov-

ery. Being able to support them both has been a great privilege that I wish to continue. “I am very grateful to Saffery Champness, not only for doubling the amount raised but also to my team for going above and beyond throughout my treatment.” Nick Batiste, managing director of Saffery Champness, said: “The staff at Saffery are passionate about the causes that they wish to support and, as part of our corporate social responsibility, we always consider them when choosing where to donate funds.

• 12 quail eggs • 1 bag baby spinach • 1 small bunch watercress • 1 curly endive • 8/10 baby new potatoes • Small amount of parmesan • Tea spoon nigella seeds • Dash of truffle oil

#01. FEBRUARY 2016. THE FUTURE ISSUE.

Trim and boil asparagus (use boiling water to avoid discolouration, cool asparagus as soon as cooked using iced water) cut in half in necessary. Boil quail eggs, cool quickly as the asparagus and peel cutting in half with a very sharp knife, boil potatoes, cool and half trim and wash watercress, endive and spinach. Pop the leaves in the bottom of you service dish then add the asparagus, quail eggs and potatoes. Dress with a dash of truffle oil (or olive oil ) grate parmesan and add a few Nigella seeds (onion seeds). You can serve with grill fish, chicken or steak as I’ve done. Bar mark the asparagus and eggs for aesthetics if you have an extra few minutes, it makes all the difference.

DESSERT fresh oysters with chilli, papaya, and coriander salad and toasted sesame seeds • 1 punnet of strawberries • 1 mango • 2 passion fruit • 4 mint leaves Hollow the strawberries by taking the top off and use a Parisian scoop (melon baller) to hollow each berry, trim the bottom so they will sit up on the plate finely dice the mango, finely cut the mint and de-seed the passion fruit. Mix all the ingredients and fill the strawberry cups. Serve with a scoop of sorbet and a nice glass of bubbling Champagne. Enjoy!

album review

WONDERGEIST Wondergeist is a local band packed full of local music talent. Over ten musicians have contributed to their latest album, we pumped up the volume and jumped aboard. Words by CDJ NOBLE Photography by DAVID GILLIVER

Pictured WONDERGEIST

(left to right) Steve Wickins, Stuart Ogier, Jo Lamb and Peter Gilliver

with these words and a swelling, shimmering chord, the lead track on Wondergeist’s eponymous debut immediately sets out the album’s emotional stall. This is a release that glows with an aching, bittersweet nostalgia, which one may fairly surmise is the product of an intense, doomed romance. Whilst the lyrical content is suffused with references to the past, the music itself is no mere homage to rock’s back catalogue, and rather provides a beguiling contemporary synthesis of bluegrass, electronica, folk, ambient, punk, 60s pop and classic indie. Wondergeist has emerged from a songwriting collaboration between Steve Wickins and Pete Gilliver, both of whom take turns at providing snakily confident lead vocals, with Pete also supplying rhythm and lead guitars. Their songs frequently utilise yearning major 7th chords to evoke the lyrics’ characteristic blend of regret and affection, whilst woozy, unexpected chord sequences on tracks such as Nothing At All, and the majestic chorus of lead single Curiosities further demonstrate an assured grasp of the songwriter’s craft. Recorded in a converted German bunker in a mere two and a half days, the remarkable brevity of the session belies the loving attention to sonic detail and accomplished musicianship evident throughout. There are numerous other individuals involved in the project who deserve mention, including Stuart Ogier on djembe, backing vocalists Jo Lamb and Jo Rathband, Mike Ferbrache and

#01. FEBRUARY 2016. THE FUTURE ISSUE.

Pete Mitchell on bass and drums respectively, violinist Greg Harrison and saxophonist/flutist Tim Adkins, all of whose deft contributions provide resonance to what is already strong base material. Wondergeist is a testament to the breadth and depth of musical talent on the island, and it seems unfortunate that lynchpin Pete will be moving to the Big Smoke later this year. It’s hard not to hear the album as both an alternately tender and withering farewell to a life-changing relationship, but also to the island itself, and indeed the record is liberally peppered with references to the sea. The digital download is available at wondergeist.bandcamp.com, releases and CDs are available directly from pete_gilliver@hotmail.com for a mere £10. The band also have an active Facebook page should you wish to poke them, so to speak. Wondergeist will be playing at the De La Rue on 6th February and headlining at the Fermain Tavern on 12th March. A more experimental gig will take place at Castle Cornet on the 19th March, with the band booked to play for an implausible 6 hours as part of a 24 hour arts marathon.

ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station. Words by MIKE HUSTON

‘THESE (STUDIOS) WERE WORTH THE WAIT, A BESPOKE STUDIO BUILT FOR THE STATION.’

i think i am finally getting used to writing 2016 and not 2015 as we are now fully submerged in to another year. I am quite sure it will be exciting as the last one. I am determined it will be, it has to be. I like the New Year not because of all the excesses over the Christmas Period although they are enjoyable, but because it is a good point to review the last 12 months and to look ahead with renewed energy and optimism with a plan for the next year. Every January I write down in my phone what my objectives are for the coming year, and I do review them as the chaos of the ongoing months ensues. For me it means I start the year facing the right direction and focused. I am a firm believer that when good stuff happens then time needs to be taken to “smell the roses” and enjoy the moments. Equally when not such good stuff occurs, it shouldn’t be taken personally and there is usually a lesson to be learnt. Easier said than done I know. 2015 was a great year for us at Island FM and a really busy one. There were many highs that included us being involved in the Island Games, Guernsey Dairy half marathon, the launching a new logo and website and building a new on air Studio. The New Studio was a major investment for us but whilst of course it is critical to our business, it is something that we are immensely proud of and passionate about. The design was specifically created

for us and all the presenters absolutely love it. I believe it is a work of art, and reflects our brand and our aspirations for the future. It is something we like to show people when they visit the station and it has really lifted the morale of the presenters and it has motivated them further. Change should be embraced particularly when it is such a positive one. 2016 promises to be an interesting one. As a radio station we will be working even harder at delivering our mantra of “Just Great Radio”. This should encompass everything we do. Our audiences are currently as high as they have ever been, but we need to ensure we maintain this and try and continue to grow. You will see more of our presenters this year and indeed the station as we will be out at even more events this year across this beautiful island. We will also endeavour to give our audience the chance to win even greater prizes across the next year and we will embrace our website and social media platforms further. There will of course be a whole host of obstacles that we encounter on this year’s journey. That makes the journey exciting and ensures that we are never complacent and always prepared. This is a fantastic Island and we will do all we can do to reflect island life, and provide a musical soundtrack to each day. I hope you will join us on our adventure. Happy New Year.

meeting Tom Walters, ‘under-confident’ is not the first description that comes to mind. His role as Fitness Instructor at Beau Sejour brings him in daily contact with clients of all ages and walks of life. But behind his obviously amiable, easy-going nature is a story of his own personal battle with weight and confidence issues that he is now happy to share to encourage others who might be dealing with similar challenges. ‘I started piling on the pounds when I was about nine which I initially put it down to genetics. But the truth is that I was eating too much of the wrong stuff and not taking any exercise.’ At secondary school, despite continuing to gain weight, Tom showed natural aptitude for sport, but because of his size, he never had the confidence to follow it through. The tallest in his class, Tom was a potential asset to any basketball team but never volunteered, preferring not to draw attention to himself. ‘I was actually a pretty good swimmer and a member of the Guernsey Swimming Club briefly. I could have possibly even represented the island. But I heard a comment about my weight one day and that was it. I never went back.’ As a young teenager, Tom ‘hid’ under loose-fitting baggy clothes and would wear a t-shirt on the beach or around the pool – which he now admits ironically probably drew more attention to him. His Mum encouraged him to get more active, signing them both up to the gym. ‘She could see that I had the capability to be the fit, healthy youngster that I wanted to be. But I just wasn’t motivated. It was all too much like hard work so I would come for a few sessions and then drop out; come back a few weeks later for couple of weeks and so the cycle went on…’ Leaving school, Tom weighed in at 17 stone and despite being 6’3” was still far too heavy. Following an unsuccessful application for an electrician apprenticeship and without any other career plan, he enrolled – ironically – on the GCFE’s two-year Sports Diploma course. And this was the kick that Tom need-

ed and prompted the start of his turnaround. ‘I had 11 weeks between leaving school and starting college. I knew some of the other sports students and some were strong athletes, already representing Guernsey in various disciplines. I was absolutely determined not to be the ‘fat lad’ who couldn’t keep up. I suppose it was a question of wanting to fit in. So I came to the Beau Sejour gym two hours a day and the pounds started to shift. By the time I started the course, I still had weight to lose but I was on a level footing with the other students. I felt much more confident and tried so many new activities that I wouldn’t have had the courage to tackle before.’ With his Diploma in Sports Development Training under his belt as well as his new-found confidence, Tom joined Beau Sejour as a Recreation Assistant and then became Fitness Instructor a few years later. He tackled half marathons, the All Terrain Challenge, got himself a road bike and took up five-a-side football. ‘I became a bit of a fitness junky at that point. Nowadays I have the balance about right and mainly keep fit in the gym.’ Now others are benefiting from Tom’s own experience as well as his professional expertise. ‘It might sound like a cliché but it’s so rewarding to help people reach their own personal goals and to achieve things they

never thought they could. I work with teenagers who give me the “what would you know about it” look and I can honestly tell them that I know exactly how they are feeling. ‘People are often scared about taking that first step into the gym – worrying about what other people will think of them. I was exactly the same. The thing to remember is that everyone in there is working towards the same goal – to get fitter and to feel better. No one is there to judge you.’ Tom would encourage everyone to take that first step. ‘Come and see us and talk through what you are looking to achieve. The gym isn’t there just for fitness addicts. I work with youngsters, people recovering from illness or accidents, and just ‘Mr Average’ who wants to shed a few pounds. And people shouldn’t worry if they have had a couple of false starts. I did! Once you start to see and feel the benefits, your motivation improves and your confidence with it. Interested in training with Tom at Beau Sejour? EXPLORING VIETNAM There is something for everyone in Vietnam; history, temples exotic food and much more as Tiffany finds out from travel specialist, Irene. Photography by KUONI Travelled specialist IRENE CARSON Interviewed by TIFFANY MATTHEWS

why would you recommend vietnam? If you are looking for something different then Vietnam is the place to go. The people are so friendly, the cities of Hanoi and Saigon are so full of life. My favourite place was Halong Bay which has more than one thousand islands, the scenery is truly amazing.

59

• You need a visa for Vietnam. • Be prepared for the amount of scooters on the roads. • You need to get your money when you arrive. You will be a millionaire with the exchange rate. • The Vietnamese have a great sense of humour and also love Karaoke bars.

when is the best time to go?

what is the cuisine of vietnam?

I went with Mercury Travel in June and we had 1 day where it rained, luckily we had finished our tours for the day. The best time to travel is November to April.

Vietnamese people eat a lot of Fish and Pork, the food is not as spicy as you may imagine but so fresh, colourful, tasty and plentiful. They cater very well for vegetarians. Be prepared to put on some weight...

what are the must-sees? Cu Chi Tunnels and Ho Chi Minh City. The floating markets on the Mekong Delta. The Temple of Literature in Hanoi where the students who have graduated come to have their picture taken. The Presidential Palace where Ho Chi Minh lived a very simple life. Halong Bay we visited the Vung Vieng fishing village by row boat. On our boat in Halong Bay we sat on the top deck after midnight and chatted away under the stars, so peaceful. The Markets are something to behold, indoor they have everything you could need and then some. The floating markets have all the fresh fruit and vegetables. The Sung Sot Caves, if you are fit and healthy. Over 160 steps to enter the cave and uneven ground and more steps inside. what should you know about vietnam before you go?

is there anything to be careful of? As with everywhere you go be aware of your surroundings. Hotels give you a business card with taxi companies they use. Check what they will charge to go back to your hotel before you get in a taxi and if it is a lot more than you paid getting there go to the next one and say where you are going and what you will pay. You will find they are looking for the business so will take you there. does it offer something to people of all ages? There is something for everyone in Vietnam. History, Temples, Halong Bay, Cycling tours, Cruises on the Mekong Delta and various organised tours. For the young this is a place a lot of backpackers visit in Gap Years. You can do a cycling tour from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The Cu Chi tunnels have a a 100 metre tunnel you can crawl along, and other more adventurous activities.

DRONE PHOTOGRAPHY Drone culture is here whether people like it or not. Technology is a crazy beast and its momentum has grasped this increasingly accessible world of aerial photography and videography. Words & photography by KEVIN LAJOIE www.aeriali.net

The world’s foremost consumer drone manufacturer, DJI, actually reached its 10 year anniversary in January. This fact took me aback somewhat as I’d only first heard of the company in 2012 when the now ubiquitous Phantom quad-copter was becoming first known. In its first guise, the Phantom was built specifically to carry GoPro action cameras bolted upside down to its belly. Not much has actually changed between then and 2016 if you were to look at how a Phantom 3 looks however the big difference now is that DJI sell the Phantom as an all-in-one package. Continuing to use the popular Phantom as a subject for how things have progressed quickly in these last few years, here’s a brief comparison between ‘then and now’: then: • 5 to 7 minute average flight time • Camera fixed direct to aircraft body; no ability to adjust position in-flight • Pilot flies with eyes only; no live video feed to assist positioning • No guidance on remaining battery power other than flashing light on aircraft body • Basic GPS position assistance, but no hands-free hover control then:

But what does the future hold even in just, say, another 3 years?

We’ll come to the tech side shortly, but regulation is part of the future too. Up until now the enforcement of air law has been noticeably slack. As the world’s drone population mushrooms, law enforcement around the planet is going to have to grow some balls and start cracking down on the dumb stuff seen all too often on the net. The worst recent case seen in the news was a toddler having an eye cut in half after a family member or friend was flying in the back garden (often illegal in the UK without sufficient perimeter space) and hit a tree before coming down on the innocent party. Such examples of personal damage are thankfully rare, but a little consideration of the laws in place would prevent a lot of accidents whether to people or property. Think of a future with droneinjurylawyers4U.com you laugh now but I’ve bought the domain name!

Enough of the seriousness, let’s go back to the techy side. A recent press release from Tesla, one of the world’s top current technology innovators, points the way to the future. Their concept drone is like something out of Star Trek (honestly Google it!). It has twin rotors that can operate in vertical or horizontal position. The proposed camera boasts 30MP raw capability and 4K video at 30fps. But where they specialise is perhaps the most important leap to be made the battery. Tesla wish their concept to fly for a full hour and be fully recharged in just 20 minutes. Given Tesla’s amazing emergence into the car market with genius of Elon Musk at the helm, don’t rule out what seems highly unlikely in 2016, not to be the norm in 2019. The drone world is moving forward at Usain Bolt pace. The DJI’s and Tesla’s of the world will keep it that way.

UNDERSTANDING WI-FI ASSIST MATT’S TOP TIP FROM AIRTEL-VODAFONE

if you are iphone user read on. If you have recently upgraded your iPhone to iOS 9 or have purchased a new iPhone over the festive period then you should be aware of a new feature called Wi-Fi Assist. If Wi-Fi Assist is switched on and you are using Wi-Fi, your phone will automatically switch to use your cellular data if the Wi-Fi signal becomes weak or unreliable. That means you may be using your phone’s data allowance when you think you are connected to a free Wi-Fi zone. It’s a useful feature because we all like to access certain apps on the move without loss of connectivity but don’t panic, there are a few settings you can tweak to take advantage of Wi-Fi assist without any out of bundle data anxiety worries. For example be aware that streaming movies and apps like Netflix can use a lot of data. By simply going in settings - mobile data you can turn off the apps that you don’t want to use mobile data for. And if you want to, scroll to the bottom of this list and you can turn off Wi-Fi Assist altogether.

#01. FEBRUARY 2016. THE FUTURE ISSUE.

THINK BIG IN 2016 Superstar DJ - and Airtel-Vodafone Brand Ambassador Hannah Jacques reviews the Samsung Note 5. there’s nothing like starting the New Year with big aspirations. Ok its February now, but as the first Gallery edition of the year I wonder how many of you have stuck to those big bad resolutions you made back in January? If you’re still thinking big for 2016, then take a look at the latest offering from Samsung, the Note 5 - the biggest, baddest beefiest Samsung phone yet. The Note 5 ticks the big box in every way, not just in size but design, hardware, memory and camera as well. I’m really not a fan of the word phablet but the first thing you’ll notice about the Note 5 is its size. With a 5.7 inch display it certainly fits the mould of a smartphone/tablet hybrid and although I’m not a great advocate of using styluses with smartphones, the new redesigned S Pen (now with an ejecting mechanism) does a great job of accurately interpreting my pen strokes. With short cuts to S Pen related activities such as Screen write, Smart Select and Action memo, this is a great feature for people who are constantly on the go, creative or just need to remind themselves all the time to do things - guilty! Design quality for the Note 5 is fantastic, no more leather and plastic that has been predominant in the Note series. The Note 5 shines with an aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass and the curved edges look great, so much so that it really feels like a premium device compared to its predecessors. The improvements have come at a price in terms of some features. There is no microSD card slot and the battery is not replaceable which may disappoint some fans of the Note series. Because this phone is so big, there are two basic settings that allow you to use it with one hand. “Reduce screen size” does what it says on the tin and “One-handed input” shifts your lock screen pattern to one side of the screen for easier input. The Note 5 takes a great picture and is packed with features such a “Pro” mode to get full manual control over the camera. I loved the wide selfie mode for big group shots and the camera can also handle 4K video recording. Battery life is better than you might expect for a phone packed with so many features and it comes in 32/64 GB storage options. Overall the Note 5 is a visually superb device and its 4GB of RAM makes it a big performer. So if “Big” is the smart word for 2016, take a look at the Samsung Note 5, available from Airtel-Vodafone from £30.90 per month on the Power 125 Plan. Price correct at time of going to print.

property

EXPERT ANALYSIS Our property supplement now sits at 24 pages, all dedicated to helping you learn more about the property market and discover your new home.

WHAT WILL 2016 BRING? Words by ANDREW DUNNELL

with data for the end of 2015 showing the trend in the volume of property sales continuing to fall, the number being approximately half of the numbers sold in 2006 and 10% less than in 2014, the property market remains a challenging one. The number of bonds registered is also down by a considerable margin, the volume being around 40% of the numbers in 2006. The effects of this, noting that those units being sold do have lower values at present – there being just 6 residential properties valued in excess of £600,000 having been sold in December – will have a big impact on all of those involved in the property market and there will be a significant reduction in the level of tax revenue being raised by the States. Guernsey however does have issues to address and the projections are that our population will increase in the coming years so there will be a greater demand on housing resources in the future. Some of these demands will be for specialist provision but there will have to be some means by which the market is willing to build the appropriate homes. The inertia of the market has resulted in a new development for the over 55s being put on hold as the potential buyers cannot sell their houses in the current market. As one of our senior politicians has indicated recently, construction is an important component of our economy and some of that work will be driven by demand for modern and economic housing. Surely a controlled stimulus of the lower end of the market would bring significant benefits in many ways including establishing vitally needed confidence and it can be done in a controlled manner that will not result in significant property price inflation.

THE PINES One of the finest new build homes to be constructed in Guernsey where attention to detail and finish are unrivalled. Photography by TOBY LE RAY

the pines was conceived to encompass the landscape, cut in to the granite surroundings to offer extensive lower level accommodation and truly captivating views of Cobo Bay - synonymous with some of the finest sunsets Guernsey has to offer. Arranged over three floors, the stunning accommodation comprises a hall, cloakroom, cinema/media/games room, garaging for seven cars, boot room, utility, exquisite kitchen/dining/livingroom, sitting room, four bedroom suites and a study. Externally, the South facing courtyard has been laid to pink granite with a raised Pergola. The Eastern garden boasts granite laid paving, together with attractive planting. An exceptional home that highly deserves closer inspection to understand both its generous dimensions and sheer quality of build. To find out more, visit livingroom.gg

BUSINESS. OPINIONS.

at the turn of 2016 I had no intention to register for the election let alone vote in it. In a total volte-face I am now considering standing for the States based on a single news item that I would love to champion. My Epiphany came with the recent suggestion to create a government bank; something I had long hoped for but assumed would never happen. Guernsey has become an incredibly conservative place thanks to constant attacks from the UK and the Continent. We make a convenient punch-bag and bogeyman armed only with the voice of reason in the absence of representation. We have been tied up in knots with externally-imposed laws and Directives designed to trap us in a web of bureaucracy. It is a credit to many in the finance industry who have managed to turn this into a positive. The noble cause of anti-money laundering has been cynically abused by those who fail to live up to the transparency that they demand of others. The end-game is to draw assets back onshore where they can be taxed mercilessly to prop up a political elite that grows in proportion to the public’s impoverishment. Anyone who dares push-back is portrayed as a tax dodger stealing money from the pockets of nurses and pensioners. Such is the power of highly-honed propaganda. The stick that big countries wave at dissenters is a threat to cut off access to mainstream currencies through denial of the payments system. Such an extreme outcome would effectively prevent any country or jurisdiction from conducting external business. While a locally owned bank cannot help against this menace it can at least maintain some domestic activity. Ever since Guernsey became anchored to Sterling in 1921 we have undergone steady devaluation without the benefit of making money from thin air (most recently in the form of Quantitative Easing). This leads onto a the related topic of creating our own currency for further independence but that is best left for another article. On a local level there is limited availability for affordable mortgage borrowing. Financial institutions are becoming more risk averse and are restricting

opinions

BANK OF THE BAILIWICK The theme of this magazine revolves around the future. As one who forecast the 2008 credit crisis I am regularly asked for yet more predictions but must profess a lack of psychic ability. This article concentrates instead on practical visions rather than prophetic ones. Words by TOBY BIRCH

lending. A local bank could offer such liquidity and bring the property market back to life which in turn generates revenue from the resulting stamp duty. Many other forms of retail activity spin-off from property sales and purchases. This need not entail further price increases; greater turnover is the desired goal. At present we have net emigration, leaving an overhang of supply that is further hampering the market. While the current States has concentrated on cost-cutting we need to switch to a more positive mode of economic development. There is a huge benefit in creating a local bank but it needs to be handled with stewardship. I liken it to finding the golden ticket in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the wrong hands a banking license brings out the worst in terms of greed and avarice, becoming a tool of exploitation and ultimately one of self-destruction through high octane growth. In the right hands it is a thing of beauty leading to organic growth and sustainability. Wealthy investors are desperate for protection, especially for their deposits. A government-backed bank could offer this

security by guaranteeing that their money will not be subject to a future bail-in (the technical term for confiscation). We could also offer much higher minimums running into the millions instead of the current paltry level of £50,000. Ideally this could be tied-in with Locate Guernsey such that entrepreneurs with specific skills or those who bring large sums to deposit could receive preferential security. Deposit protection is funded by banks meaning that if they are all distressed then no one will be left to pay the bill. In effect their guarantees are worthless because the safeguard against insolvency can only be delivered if the banks are solvent. During the Occupation a German officer cruelly described Guernsey people as ‘obsequious peasants’. This is exactly how we ought to portray ourselves, playing the dumb unquestioning supplicant. In reality behind closed doors we should be building a financial infrastructure not only for self-sufficiency but for seizing opportunities when the next financial crisis comes home to roost. Many of us have little grasp as to the remarkable history of this island. Time and again down the centuries Guernsey merchants have re-invented themselves to adapt to new markets and trading routes. Sadly this buccaneering spirit appears to have been suppressed by those who import their outmoded blue-prints. Perhaps it is time to re-awaken the animal essence of entrepreneurship that has for so long been suppressed. Where better to start than determining our own destiny with a publicly owned financial institution; the Bailiwick Bank is as good a name as any.

SEVEN PROMOTED AT BDO LIMITED guernsey accountancy and business services firm BDO Limited has marked the end of another year of steady growth by announcing promotions for seven of its 70-strong workforce. Six of the promotions have taken place within the firm’s audit team, with the promotion of two audit supervisors to audit assistant managers and four audit seniors to audit supervisors. Meanwhile, BDO’s Business Services and Accounting department, which specialises in providing services for the local business community, has announced the promotion of one of its longest serving staff members. Maria Devlin joined the firm in 1988 when it operated under the name Reads & Co and she now has more than 25 years’ experience supporting a wide range of Guernsey based companies. ‘While my new role of assistant manager involves overseeing the work of team colleagues, I will continue to do all the nuts and bolts accountancy, especially on some of the more complex jobs,’ Maria said. Welcoming her promotion, head of department Richard Jackson said Maria’s promotion to a more managerial position would enable BDO to further develop its already very strong offering to local businesses. ‘It is a very well deserved promotion,’ he said. Within BDO’s audit department, Craig Shorto and Trevlyn Kelly have been promoted to audit assistant managers and have spent the last few months settling into their new positions. Trevlyn came to the island three years ago from her native South Africa to work in Guernsey as a qualified accountant, focusing on her specialist field of financial services. ‘The firm’s growth since I came here has provided lots of opportunities and new clients to work with,’ she said. ‘It’s great to get this recognition for all the work we’ve put in to achieve these results.’ Craig joined BDO from the Guernsey

Grammar School seven years ago. With his work focused on the insurance side of the business, he is thriving on the additional responsibility that comes with being an assistant manager. As well as its two new assistant managers, BDO Limited has appointed four new audit supervisors. Danny Fooks, Josh Payne, Mirela Dumitrache and Fili Mamaliadis all took up their positions last month. Former Grammar School student Danny has been with the firm for seven years and described his appointment as an important career step. Josh joined BDO in January 2014 after qualifying with a small UK accountancy firm and said the opportunity for promotion had been a driver to join BDO. Romanian national Mirela also joined the BDO team last year as an audit senior. Like the others, she described her promotion to a supervisory role as ‘recognition of the hard work I put in,’ adding that she had settled in well at the St Peter Port based firm. BDO Limited’s audit director Justin Hallett said that the recent promotions had further bolstered his team and provides further opportunity for more sustainable growth whilst continuing to focus on excellent client service.

‘THESE PROMOTIONS ARE EVIDENCE OF THE EXCITING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY OUR FIRM AND THEY RECOGNISE THE EFFORTS OF OUR STAFF TO PLACE US IN THIS EXTREMELY ENCOURAGING POSITION AT THE END OF ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR.’

Healthspan has recently partnered with China’s leading direct marketing company EC Moho to become one of the company’s core ‘Flagship brands’ along side J&J and a number of successful US brands.

‘WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT PERSON TO HEAD UP OUR CONTINUING COMPANY EXPANSION THAT WILL INCLUDE INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. I AM CERTAIN THAT TIM IS THE RIGHT MAN TO LEAD THE COMPANY INTO THE FUTURE.’

WORKSPACES Based in Trinity Square The Potting Shed design agency builds brands, advertising and websites for clients both in the Channel Islands and beyond. Words by JAY AYLMER

as we have grown in size as a company we have expanded into different areas but always remained in the same building”, says The Potting Shed’s Creative Director Al Mitchell. “From the shoe box on the second floor where we started in eight years ago to the three floors of open plan space we now occupy. We’re surrounded by windows, and with the courtyard below, the natural light floods the large open plan studio. When the building was renovated by the current landlords a few years ago we took the chance to rationalise the slightly higgledy-piggledy layout of the building to create a boardroom and photo studio on the upper floor. Since then we have continued to add our personality to the space through branding and decoration including a large anamorphic logo in the reception that warps and distort as your viewpoint changes. Brand is at the heart of what we do so it has always been massively important for us to practice what we preach to our clients. We believe passionately that creative minds function best in creative spaces that facilitate the free and open exchange of ideas. It’s by no means the finished article and we continue to evolve and alter the space as budget allows but we love it’s character.” Designer Luke Vidamour adds “I love day to day life at our studio. The location itself is full of character (and characters) and the open plan layout encourages collaboration, dialogue and critique which are essential for well rounded creative work. Having everybody in one room is an excellent creative environment and encourages a team culture both professionally and socially.”

‘THE OPEN PLAN LAYOUT ENCOURAGES COLLABORATION, DIALOGUE AND CRITIQUE WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL FOR WELL ROUNDED CREATIVE WORK.’ #01. FEBRUARY 2016. THE FUTURE ISSUE.
