An open-plan layout was once de rigeur for modern family life, but it has its drawbacks. Welcome to broken-plan living. Open plan is all about a light, airy space in which to eat, live and work. The idea is that families are brought together by cooking, eating, watching television, playing and socialising in the same huge room. So far, so desirable, but cavernous spaces tend to have poor acoustics - and what about privacy and cosiness?
