f you want to make the most of your outdoor space, however compact (or expansive) it is, you will need to consider the use of hard landscaping. Planned and chosen well, it will form the backbone of your area, will weather well and will complement your planting landscape; the opposite is also sadly true, and nobody wants an expensive, ugly mistake! Whether you are re-thinking your front garden, driveway or back garden, there are a myriad of options now available to you - the only limit is your own creativity. The ‘best’ hard landscaping materials

Your choice of product will depend on your budget, the effect you wish to create, the amount of traffic in the area and environmental considerations. The materials you choose should reflect and complement those used on your house. The purist would probably always say that natural York stone is unbeatable - the legendary ‘real deal’, hewn for millennia from the Pennines, it’s a surface which ages beautifully and softens with time… But it’s expensive. As is the extremely desirable, pale and contemporary Portland stone (limestone used since Roman times), which would look fabulous next to a cutting-edge

home. Locally, granite is - unsurprisingly - the most popular choice for paving & not as expensive as you’d think. It’s non-slip, easy to maintain as it doesn’t necessarily need to be sealed and is available in a number of colours to complement your home. It’s also extremely hardwearing and its flat surface lends itself well to patio furniture and clean architectural lines. Sandstone is a timeless product & their most economical paving solution that offers traditional style & elegant looks. Brick - whether new or reclaimed - lends itself to versatile designs, either over large areas, to edge stone or gravel or for an enticing, winding path. Similarly, but demanding a substantial budget - granite setts can be used to create a stunning driveway, patio or path and lend themselves particularly well to spiral and concentric circular patterns. Happily, reconstituted stone and good-looking concrete setts are available for a more modest outlay; these are joined by wires, laid on mortar and pointed. Another way of keeping the cost down is to use setts in a small area only, as a focal point, and the same can be said of mosaics and glass bricks too. There are, of course, a huge variety of concrete slabs now available which are designed to imitate natural stone at a fraction of the cost. However concrete is not just a cheap alternative - as a smooth surface it can be used to stunning effect in a modern garden. Gravel is a relatively cheap and quick material to use. It’s quite quick to spread and is best put over a permeable membrane in order to control weeds. It also drains easily. A minor downside is that it will need topping up every few years. You could also consider using pebbles or cobbles set into mortar. For front gardens there are now resin-bonded gravels and granites available that are set in recycled plastic. Plastics and rubber are being used increasingly in garden design; artificial turf is one product that has become a whole lot more desirable in recent years, and not just for the ‘child-friendly’ garden either. If you are incorporating a play area into your scheme, however, then you could consider using textured or patterned rubber or ‘playground tarmac’ made of plastic chippings.

Maximise your space… Minimise your impact If your outdoor space is limited, then there are some clever tricks you can employ to enhance it. Try taking paving to the full width of the garden. If you have a neat, rectangular patch, then lead the eye with your landscaping; use diagonals, unusual angles and asymmetry, or wind a path through the ‘rooms’ in your garden to make it more interesting. This could be made of traditional brick, or of recycled crushed materials such as chipped bark, shells or recycled aggregates. Be careful however not to over-pave your area. It’s really important to maintain some soft landscaping too - shockingly London has lost the equivalent of 5,200 football pitches by paving over front gardens and in the north of England a quarter of gardens are paved. In the UK, three times as many front gardens are now paved over compared to ten years ago*. The increased use of nonpermeable materials has led to run-off and flash-flooding as well and is also detrimental to wildlife. Thankfully there are sustainable and friendlier ‘permeable’ options available to us. Modern brick pavers are designed to interlock, meaning that rainwater can penetrate the tiny gaps between them. Matrix pavers (also known as cellular paving) are made of recycled plastic and are filled with the aggregate of your choice; or why not try reinforced grass? Paving can be set in sand instead of mortar and you can also consider using mixes using recycled aggregate instead of cement. Naturally, any conventional block or slab paving should always be sloped so that water runs off onto the garden.
