VAL FLEURY Qube Construction’s latest development is the prestigious Val Fleury, situated in an enviable location in Hauteville, St Peter Port, a stone’s throw from all the action of Town. Comprising 14 three or four-bedroom townhouses, the homes are nearing completion and No. 10 is staged as an elegant showhome. The house is the product of many months’ hard work from a number of local suppliers and the entire project has been coordinated by Ray Griffiths, of Oxfordshire-based Wychwood Design and local designer Arthur Pugh. Ray established Wychwood Design, a manufacturer of high quality fitted and freestanding furniture in 1969, having worked previously as a design and technology teacher. ‘My links with Guernsey go back almost that far!’ he jokes. The list of projects with which he has been commissioned locally is extensive, to say the least and covers a broad spectrum of both residential and commercial work. Clients include the Sarnia Hotels group and many high end restaurants, from Pier 17 to Mora and shopfits including Qube’s own Maison de Champagne and Ray & Scott’s jewellery counter. Wychwood works worldwide and

Ray casually mentions a number of Moscow and London establishments too. Despite Wychwood’s impressive client list and credentials, Ray humbly states that Val Fleury is his first ‘complete’ interior design project. ‘We were to provide all the fitted and freestanding furniture - using a lot of European walnut to match the doors - all of which was bespoke for the project. We were fortunate to be able to persuade Arthur Pugh, a local designer now in semi-retirement - to help us make the house attractive. He in turn enlisted a number of extremely cooperative local studios and shops to source and provide the accessories.’ ‘It was also my first foray into layout design,’ says Ray, ‘and I loved it! We designed Val Fleury as an honest, relatively modern living space which would appeal to a wide range of tastes and so we tried an objective approach to room layouts.’ Arthur, like Ray, has a client list a lot longer than his arm. Extremely experienced as a designer and signwriter, he is responsible for the interiors of countless local establishments, including Les Folies d’Amour nightclub.

What Pete doesn’t know about choosing the right bed for you probably isn’t worth knowing, and he always ensures his customers take time to choose what is a vital investment in their well being. He’s also very excited to be selling luxury bed brand Vispring. Pete stocks a lovely range of locally made and inspired products including beach wraps and towels embroidered with Guernsey pictures. ‘Last, but by no means least,’ says Arthur, ‘was Kathy Sanders of St Martin’s-based shop Home Comforts.’ The frontage of the shop belies its tardis-like proportions and the wealth of products it offers. All the décor items for No.10 came from Kathy - vases, silk flower arrangements, framed prints, contemporary lighting and tea towels. ‘In fact,’ says Arthur, ‘you really could just approach Kathy with the style of interior you’re after and she would come up with an entire house worth of goods.’ Home Comforts has been established 6 years and Kathy clearly loves being at the helm. Although small, they have the ability to source a vast variety of items - anything too big for the shop can be ordered with a delivery time of usually only 3-4 weeks. And a huge selling point is their ability to deliver out of hours and remove the packaging! Wychwood Design have manufactured the furniture at Val Fleury in the hope that future clients - whether domestic or commercial - will approach them; they are always happy to quote for any order, large or small. Ray and Arthur have clearly enjoyed their partnership with the development and Ray will certainly be planning plenty more visits here. ‘Business has been hard-won but over the years my contacts have become old friends. I absolutely love it here.’ ‘I’ve refitted Folies too many times to mention!’ he quips. He enjoyed putting flesh on the ‘bones’ of the Val Fleury showhome. Armed with Wychwood’s furniture and layout he was tasked with sourcing and placing items to turn the house into a home. ‘The idea was to lend the house a ‘family home’ theme, without being too prescriptive,’ he explains. ‘We have a number of local suppliers to thank and commend for their involvement in No.10,’ explain Ray and Arthur. ‘Everything seen in the house - from the glassware on the table to the towels in the bathroom and the linen on the beds - has been produced and provided free-of-charge by a handful of people.’ Lisa Scott, of long-established upholstery manufacturer, Graham Scott & Co, worked hard to plan and produce some eye-catching soft furnishings including blinds, curtains, cushions and upholstered items. She and Arthur chose from Warwick fabrics to produce a muted palette of greys, browns and whites with wonderful texture, flashes of metallic and geometric designs which are understated yet out-of-theordinary, complementing perfectly the solid craftsmanship of Wychwood’s furniture. Channel Island Ceramics - a company that has flourished in the island for nearly 40 years - offered help in the form of Rachel Barclay, an interior designer. She supplied Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware and tiles and Hansgrohe taps (arguably the best brassware in the industry). She also procured glassware, crockery and kitchen accessories from the ‘Neptune’ and ‘New Wave’ ranges from Villeroy & Boch, most of which can be purchased from the company’s Forest Road premises. For all the bed linen, towels, duvets and pillows, Arthur approached Pete de Laune, of Guernsey Beds and Bedding in the Lower Pollet. Although Pete is never one to blow his own trumpet, he is well known locally for his exceptional customer service and willingness to go the extra mile for clients. ‘I
