Step Into Your Reality

BIM software is offered as standard at Create Chartered Architects, and new virtual reality headsets bring your design to life. At Create we’ve been using BIM – Building Information Modelling – for some time. These 3D models allow clients to ‘look around’ a proposed design and get a feel for a space in a way that isn’t possible with traditional 2D drawings. Now the technology has gone a step further: you can actually feel what it’s like to be right inside a building by wearing an Oculus Rift VR headset and getting a 360-degree view. It’s a bit like being inside a computer game, except that instead of entering a virtual world, you can take a walk around your future home. This technology can save you money as any issues, such as inadequate lighting or incorrectly placed electrical sockets, can be identified at an early stage. VR enables you to experience how the space might be furnished and lit, how ceiling height changes a room and how different areas flow. You can even mark up alterations in red with the Xbox controller, all in 3D. The implications for kitchen and bathroom design are huge and, of course, you can visualise materials for the floor and paint colours for the walls in any room.

n today's world, many of us are focused on the ‘what's next’, rather than the ‘what is’. We keenly read up on the latest designer trends, buy magazines that tell us that in 2017 the colour is dark green, and that copper and marble are out. So flippant are the trends that many of them only last a season (yes, only 3 months!)

However, according to Sally West and Claire Clermont from Clermont West Interiors, Guernsey residents are more likely to buck the trends, instead focusing on creating a style that can last many years. “People tend to look at books and we help them add to what they already have. They might get inspiration from a friend or magazine”. One style that has had a lasting influence since emerging in the 1950s is Scandinavian design. Initially created from a social-ethos of providing design at affordable prices, it now has global appeal. In Guernsey however, it's seldom seen as a style in its own right, but rather an influence that is borrowed from. Scandi-design can be defined by its principles, which were all about creating a lifestyle. These included; function, simplicity, use of natural materials, light, neutral palette, eco-friendly and a sense of nature. Much of the design available today draws on many of these principles, and this is true even in Guernsey. Kitchen designer, Terry Lowe from Guernsey and UK business, Cucine Interiors, has noticed the Scandinavian influence on the way he designs and the sustainable materials he uses. “I'm always advising clients to put their kitchen island where it will face out onto nature. ''It has a calming effect. I also encourage the creation of natural light for the room”. Clermont West have also found that there are elements of the influence in some of the furnishings and furniture that they supply: “Designers Guild furniture, for example, is very Scandiinfluenced, but depending on what the customer wants, we can add warmth and a more inviting feel with the choice of material”. However, even with a lasting design trend such as the Scandinavian design movement, people very often will not go after a full look. “People want to mix it up. Our wool rugs in neutral colours are very popular and are quite Scandi, but mostly people look for things that they like and can incorporate into their homes. Often people have collected things over the years, or from their travels and it can all work together”, explain Sally and Claire. So it seems that anything goes when it comes to designing the look for your interior. So where do you start? Clermont West have many years experience of


working with Guernsey clients and suggest a simple approach: “Start with one room and take it one room at a time. For many people it can be too daunting to take on a whole house in one go. Although we can of course do this. We suggest the bedroom or lounge first, as this is where you spend the most time and, in particular, the master bedroom, as this is the place where you'll start and end your day, so you want it to be nice”. As I was speaking to Sally and Claire one of their clients popped in to return some fabric books, which was neatly explained to me by Sally, “we offer a type of library service so that people can take the books home and take the time to consider them...Some people think they know what they want, but once they start looking, they often change their minds”. After seeing the rows of fabric and wallpaper books, I think I could see why. So whether you know what you want, or think you know what you want, or you're not sure at all, remember that you can completely change your look with little cost and effort, Claire explained as she spoke from personal experience; “It's much easier to update walls than anything else and this can change everything. I've recently painted my walls a much darker colour, a rich blue, and it's incredible how light the floorboards and furnishings now look. It's very different”.
