house without windows isn’t a home. But how much time have you spent thinking about the glass that clads your home? Most likely you haven’t really considered this part of your home, but as the Guernsey experts I spoke to suggest, there are some very good reasons to. Whilst you might not count yourself as a treehugger, being environmentally conscious also helps the back pocket, and cutting your energy expenses should be a key focus for all of us. Energy costs are unlikely to go down, and according to the Guernsey Expenditure Survey 2012-13, energy, fuel and housing accounts for more than a quarter of our expenses. Upgrading your windows to drive thermal efficiencies, that is, supporting a cool-in-

summer and a warm-in-winter environment can really help. But there are less transparent benefits too, “the UV filter [in many materials] also protects your furniture from fading”, explained Jerry from Guernsey Trade Windows Ltd and there are added benefits from installing good quality windows, such as noise reduction. Jason, Director of Jason Hobbs Architectural Services Limited suggests there are other important considerations when looking at the use of windows in your home, “light is very important in design. The view is important, but light plays the biggest trick. The development of product now [in window design] gives us the ability to increase that [amount of light] and still provide the flexibility on the functional use of the building. In other words, you get the benefits of having more windows, but you don’t have to pay for it through huge energy bills.’’ One recent example that Ben, Director of Guernsey Trade Windows spoke about was a refurbishment of a conservatory for a customer, “it gave us a good feeling that we were able to help this customer get use again out of this space”. The customer hadn’t been able to use the conservatory because it was too hot in Summer and too cold in winter. By replacing the roof, they


got the full function of the room back. Another benefit of incorporating glass into your home is to maximise your home’s aspect. The view becomes a feature, almost like having an ever-changing artwork in your home. “This can be a real asset for your property and an important selling commodity”, says Jason. Windows can also enhance the feeling of space in your home and create more comfortable interior spaces, by providing natural light and ventilation (there’s no excuse not to make the most of the sea breeze in Guernsey!) It’s worthwhile to think about how the windows will also enhance and compliment the exterior of your property. An architect will be able to work with you to advise on suitable windows that will meet your desired look, and maybe even push the boundaries to create something unique just for you. Just keep in mind that any changes to your home’s windows must meet local building regulations and you will need planning permission from the Guernsey Development and Planning Authority. The development of glazing techniques and materials has come such a long way, and even traditional materials, such as wood are now being constructed with the intention to be durable, functional and still provide the desired aesthetic. Leading the way are the Scandinavians and Germans, according to Jason. “They are even doing air-tight properties and have units with very high efficiency”. Fortunately, the UK is not too far behind and many of these products are now being produced across the Channel to similar efficiency and quality standards. These days according to Guernsey Trade Windows Ltd, “good windows, if looked after, should last 20 to 25 years”. So what are some of the latest trends in window design? Both Jason and Jerry mentioned that coloured window frames, in particular grey and black, are hugely popular at the moment. According to them, the consumer is looking for a different look, something more striking than white window frames, and this can really complement the overall design of your home’s exterior. Another trend, particularly here in Guernsey and across in the UK, is to make the conservatory more permanent, and also more efficient by replacing the glass roof with a solid roof. This has the desired impact of increasing the thermal control of room and driving energy efficiency. So next time you think about renovating, extending or converting your home, don’t forget about your windows.
