The Urban Farmhouse Words: Caroline Mauger

La Colline is a rare find: a listed farmhouse close to the centre of St Peter Port. Gallery was intrigued to find out more about this unusual Open Market property. If you were looking for a period home in St Peter Port, you’d expect to find a Victorian or Georgian townhouse, but when it was built around 400 years ago, La Colline was a farmhouse. ‘It was once on the outskirts of town, but town grew,’ says Richard Fox of Martel Maides. La Colline occupies a corner plot where St Jacques meets Upper St Jacques, and it feels like a serendipitous find. The house has been extended over the years and, as its story has unfolded, every attempt has been made to preserve its character and style, as you’d expect from a listed property. The current owners have not only converted the roof space into two extra bedrooms and a study, but they have also refurbished throughout, ensuring that only the best materials and craftsmanship have been employed. As you enter through the front porch you find an entrance hall with an original Victorian mosaic tiled floor and remodelled 17th-century wooden panelling. This leads off to the kitchen and study on one side, both examples of how old and new can work together in harmony. Whilst traditionally old farmhouses can be rather dark, everything has been done to keep this one bright and airy: clever detailing, design and paint finishes help to maximise the light. The glossy white units in the kitchen are a case in point, topped with polished granite on the worktops and central island. Two Siemens ovens and a wine fridge happily coexist with an Aga, sitting in an alcove with an exposed wooden beam above. The study is a recent addition, built in a traditional style which echoes the

architecture of the original building and has a pitched roof. Bookworms and scholars will love all the built-in bookshelves here. This room overlooks one of the most charming parts of the house: the vinery. This southfacing, L-shaped construction has been completely rebuilt and, with its stoneflagged floor, it’s perfect for dining with an al fresco feel, whatever the weather. There are blinds to stop it getting too hot, as well as mature vines providing shade, beauty …and grapes. Doors lead from the vinery to the dining room. Both this room and the adjoining sitting room have a period feel, but in slightly different ways. The elegant dining room has window seats and a fireplace with a slate-tiled hearth; the sitting room is cosy and rustic, with original beamed ceilings and a big stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove. Once it would have been the fashion to have exposed wooden beams, but painting them white gives a fresher feel. A utility room and double bedroom with a large bathroom next door complete the ground floor. This would make a great guest suite, although there are plenty of options with two further bedroom suites on the first floor. Both of these bedrooms are spacious enough to compete for the title ‘master suite’ and they have Georgian fireplaces, built-in wardrobes and deep windowsills that show how thick these farmhouse walls really are. Whilst one bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, the other pips it at the post by having a walk-in dressing room and an adjoining bathroom with a


bath and separate shower. The fireplace in this true master suite is particularly beautiful, with highly original, curvy detailing. When the owners converted the roof space they didn’t just add two bedrooms, they also made a quirky second study, accessed by climbing a ladder. If you were involved in top-secret research, this would be the study you’d choose! The pair of bedrooms have dormer windows and share a bathroom with an open shower stall. From the garden you can admire the way La Colline has been lovingly restored: the stonework has been repointed and is bright and clean, and the new catslide dormer windows look like they have always been here. This suntrap of a garden has lots of lovely features: a lawn surrounded by ornamental borders, a kitchen garden and a shed. Double gates also give you extra parking to the rear, should you need it in addition to the area at the front. Richard is confident that La Colline will soon find a buyer who loves its history and originality: ‘It’s a beautifully restored property and a little oasis of the countryside close to the heart of St Peter Port.
