Le Gaillard d’Arrière is a beautiful and original home set within a plot that offers an idyllic lifestyle. The house is oak framed, giving a rustic feel throughout, and it has a reverse-plan layout to make the most of the fantastic views. Underfloor heating warms the ground floor; a spacious entrance hall leads to four double bedrooms, the master having a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom with a claw-foot bath, separate shower and double basins. Another bedroom has an en-suite shower room and the remaining two share the family bathroom. The bathrooms have recently been redone and are lovely, complementing each other with white metro tiles, Belfast-style basins atop wooden bases and terracotta floor tiles. A second kitchen with a Belfast sink is at the rear

of the house, presently known as the boot room as you can enter here and store your shoes. The first floor is completely open plan, its beams and solid beech floors making a real feature of warm, honey-coloured timber. The layout is extremely versatile: you’d want a dining area, a snug and a living room, perhaps also somewhere to study, but with so much space you could come up with the arrangement that works best for the way you live. Clever design means that light and airiness reign but without sacrificing the ability to get cosy: there’s a fireplace with a wood-burning stove where you could snuggle up to your heart’s content. The kitchen has been refitted by the current owners, with new granite tops and a Rangemaster oven. The fitted units echo the built-in furniture in the bedrooms and hallway: made locally, it’s all bespoke, hand-painted and top quality. Like the living areas, flexibility is key in the kitchen, as a number of units are free standing. The large, square terracotta tiles complement the smaller rectangular ones in the bathrooms. Le Gaillard d’Arrière is French for quarterdeck, and there’s definitely something nautical about the wraparound balcony on the first floor. Like the captain of a ship, you can survey your surroundings from every angle: looking out over Port Soif you can see if the flag is flying outside the kiosk, and from the rear there’s room for more seating so you can watch the children in the pool without getting splashed. The house has three entrances, one of which is upstairs, accessed by steps up to this wonderful balcony. If you were to buy this house you’d


do well to take some interior design tips from the current owners, who have really enhanced the natural feel of their home with their choices of finishes and fabrics. Happily, many of the fittings will be staying, including gorgeous pendant lights and chandeliers, the free-standing kitchen units and a Samsung American-style fridge-freezer.
