EDITOR'S
UPFRONT / EDITOR'S NOTE
NOTE
As this month’s theme is succeed and I’m the new kid on the block - I can only hope that I can succeed to fill Tiff's shoes as Editor. Only finishing my degree and university life last May, I wouldn’t have ever imagined being where I am now! I've gone from crying about my dissertation and having one too many 'pint o' purples' every Wednesday evening to this in just under a year. It just goes to show hard work and the occasional breakdown pays off! But there's no success without enjoying yourself too. Success in anything is driven by yourself and your means to achieve. “I could go back in the direction I had come from, or I could go forward in the direction I intended to go.” This quote is from Cheryl Strayed in her autobiographical book 'Wild'. In the road to success you can go either way, back to where you came from or forwards to achieve your goals. I am so incredibly stunned by Cheryl Strayed’s story, as I could barely hike three miles in and out of the Grand Canyon without thinking I was going to die, yet she (untrained) walked the majority of the Pacific Crest Trail (a hike from the Mexican border all the way up to the Canadian border). If you believe you can achieve... In this month’s edition we explore different kinds of success from entrepreneurs in building their own brands, musical success, restaurant success, young adults finding their own career paths, to success in sports. We celebrate the success of local people and their variety of achievements. This includes Seb Priaulx and his journey into motor racing (see pg. 46), Empara (Guernsey girl - Chloe Curran) and her growing career in the music industry (see pg. 44) and the restauranteur power couple behind the scenes of the much loved local restaurants Octopus and Petit Bistro (see pg. 38). I’ve personally loved putting together my first edition of GSYLife which wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing team! We hope you enjoy reading this month’s magazine as much as we did creating it. Happy Reading!

UPFRONT / PET HERO
Meet Catrina On a winter evening at the beginning of February, the GSPCA wardens picked up a little tortoiseshell cat after she had been hit by a car. She was cold and wet, unable to stand, and yet as she was warmed up and assessed she was trying to lick the mud off her front legs.
Catrina, as she was named, had no microchip to identify her, and despite advertising, her owner has not come forward. On that first evening, she was treated for shock, given pain relief, and settled into a kennel at the surgery. Even in her shocked state she was still very keen to eat the food offered to her! The following morning, she was given a general anaesthetic and x-rayed – this showed that her pelvis was broken in several places, so she was unable to stand up. She had also lost all the skin on her tail, so the tail had to be amputated, and there was extensive bruising over her back. Over the next few days, Catrina was cared for by the Isabelle Vets nurses and veterinary surgeons, and they soon fell for this courageous and adorable little cat. It was amazing that she had survived the impact from the car, she was so bruised and battered, and yet she proved to be a determined fighter; and nothing put her off her food! However, there were concerns that she might have damaged the nerves to her bladder, which would mean that she did not know when she needed to pass urine; but because she was unable to stand and get into the litter tray, this was difficult to assess. She was moving her right hind leg quite well, but did little with the left leg. So, ten days after she was injured, she had surgery to stabilise the left side of her pelvis, which involved the delicate operation of putting a screw through the pelvic wing into the spine. Catrina now needed physiotherapy to encourage her to use her legs properly, and it was soon discovered that we could encourage her to walk by tempting her with food treats. Her mobility improved slowly, and although she still does not have full use of her left leg, she can walk quite well, and has full control of her bladder. But another problem was now apparent – because of the extensive bruising over her back, the blood supply to the skin had been destroyed. The skin had died. It had formed a vast, dead, scab over Catrina’s back. With weeks of care and nursing this scab is now slowly lifting off, and underneath, healthy, new skin is slowly returning. Catrina faces many more weeks of nursing care before her body has fully healed, and it is likely that she will always have problems with her back legs. It is hoped that the skin on her back will heal, but if there are on-going problems she will receive a skin graft. After over a month at Isabelle Vets, she is now being cared for by the GSPCA, with regular check-ups with Isabelle Vets staff.
Isabelle Vets Lastest News Stiff, Bad back, Post-Operation, Can’t jump up? HYDROTHERAPY may be the answer. We are only a few weeks away from opening our new and innovative surgery at L’Islet. A community facility at the north end of the Island with excellent access and car parking and great consulting care with vets and qualified nurses on site. Many of our clients will have older pets, arthritic pets, stiff pets, athletic pets, post trauma pets or surgery pets. All of these categories will benefit from our advanced hydrotherapy centre with the best and most innovative ‘hydrophysio’ treadmill available. A ChihuaHua to a Great Dane can be accommodated in anything from an inch to three feet of warm water depending on the habilitation requirement. In training? The treadmill can be turned into a hill. Sore, arthritic, old Labrador; get the muscles toned to support the joints with the warm water and floatation mode. Post surgery? Regimented but gentle rehabilitation courses. We have three qualified hydrotherapists fronted by our senior veterinary nurse and rehabilitation therapist Danni M who will run this amazing facility which will allow your pets (yes, many cats will tolerate and enjoy this facility) to maximise their life potential and athletic potential. Healthy joints mean less pain.

They are a wonderful organisation that provides our Island with the animal welfare that Guernsey residents require.

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH Photographer: paul thomson Location: bathing pools
"As my interest in photography began to grow, I realised that there was so many more avenues to explore in this fascinating world of imagery. Having done portrait, landscape and seascape shots, I thought that I would explore the world of slow shutter speed shots, such as in wire wool spinning & light painting. The method used for wire wool spinning photography is relatively simple and materials are cheap to purchase. An ordinary kitchen whisk is filled with very fine steel wool, which is attached to around one metre of lightweight chain. The wire wool is ignited then spun around in a circular motion. It's important that the person carrying out the spinning is wearing gloves, hat and some form of protective clothing. eye protection should also be worn." OUR HERO OF THE MONTH IS...
the e.d. team Words Samata Russell Image Lauren Hunt Our heroes this month are not a person, but a team: those dedicated souls at the Emergency Department who care for us when we are at our most vulnerable and needy. It is no one’s favourite place – every visit accompanied by fear or pain or worry – but the staff do a brilliant job of welcoming us all 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. I spent a morning talking to doctors and nurses; learning about the camaraderie and team spirit that is the glue of the operation and how the lead consultant is driving them forwards to make the patient experience better than ever. On the ward are 25 nurses, 8 doctors and 14 reception staff working on shifts around the clock. Becky Cooper is the ward manager, having worked in the ED since 2004. ‘We have a population on Guernsey of 65,000 people and we have a remit of 65,000 people. We don’t have any idea who will walk through the door on any given day so we have to be flexible and manage whatever happens. ‘A huge part of being able to do that is down to the relationships we have with each other; we’ve got to be able to pull together and rely on each other. It’s common for people to work here for a long time because we genuinely get on well, we’re not just colleagues, we’re friends,’ said Becky. Having said that, there has been a recent influx of new faces on the ward. Nurses have been appointed from both the UK and abroad along with Dr Sen, who was brought to the island two years ago to support modernization and development of the department. He has been responsible for making
great efficiencies whilst providing better patient experiences. This has been done in a number of ways; through appointing new ED experienced staff, increasing the skills of existing staff and introducing a program for equipment replacment. ‘Before we made changes a lot of patients were being referred on to other departments, meaning they experienced greater waiting times and also took up beds in the hospital. Now we are working towards treating many more patients within the Emergency Department, so they can be seen immediately and go home that day,’ said Dr Sen. Dr Sen described an incident when a child from a neighbouring island was admitted having sustained an injury. In previous years he would have flown to Salisbury to be treated. Mum would have gone too, having to take time from work and make arrangements for her other children to be cared for. The States would have picked up the bill for the flights, accommodation and hospital care for a 10 day stay. ‘It would have been extremely costly and been really inconvenient for the family. Instead, with the upgrading of staff skills I was able to treat the child in Guernsey and send them home later that day. We did a follow up call a week later through video conference, a new piece of kit, so I could have a look at the burn with minimal inconvenience and cost. The patient didn’t have to stay in Guernsey (or Salisbury) all that time or travel backwards and forwards. The mother was most grateful,’ said Dr Sen. According to Dr Sen, we Guerns have proven a positive and grateful bunch. ‘I was previously working for the NHS in North Wales and I would get the occasional thank you or card. Here I receive a stream of face to face gratitude. It’s very pleasant!’ he said.
#13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE
Guernsey compares favorably with the NHS in other ways too. ‘I left my position in Wales because the Emergency Department had become unmanageable. 90 beds were cut over five years and the backlog of patients was enormous. People are now having to wait sometimes 24 hours to be seen in the NHS; heart attacks, strokes, critical conditions, it doesn't matter. Here we do not have that problem at the moment, though we sometimes walk a fine balance. For the most part however, we are able to function and treat everyone who walks through the door in a timely fashion,’ said Dr Sen. But there is still a way to go in the modernization process. Some of the equipment in the department has not been upgraded for many years. ‘Sometimes I ask people to carry out a procedure but then realise that it is not possible because we do not always have all the equipment needed. What we do have here though, is very enthusiastic, keen, motivated and intelligent staff who work together very well. There is still a way to go to make Guernsey’s Emergency Department in line with those around the world but the staff have all the raw materials required to make such a shift,’ said Dr Sen. Nothing in life is perfect, but it seems clear to me that Dr Sen is a pair of safe hands to drive change forwards, with a cooperative and enthusiastic team. For the people of Guernsey, any one of whom could be in need of their service tomorrow, this is very good news in deed.

A NEW GOODNESS GANG ARRIVES AT THE CHANNEL ISLANDS COOPERATIVE SOCIETY
island life
COMMUNITY NEWS A selection of community news, charitable activities and local events from within the Bailiwick.
WORKSHOP GIVES PEOPLE WITH AUTISM A WEEK OF CODING EXPERIENCE The ‘Cracking the Code’ workshop The ‘Cracking the Code’ workshop at the Digital Greenhouse proved a huge success for islanders on the autism spectrum looking for a new avenue to explore their interests in computers and technology. The five-day course, hosted by Autism Guernsey, was attended by seven students ranging in age from 15 to 54. Free to attend, the workshop was designed to provide a supportive and friendly environment in which people could learn about computer coding and the skills necessary to build basic websites. The course was jointly run by Codex tutors Richard Rolfe and Jonathan Channing, a Channel Island entrepreneur who launched his business after attending a similar coding event in 2014 following his autism diagnosis. Jonathan said, ‘People with autism have an aptitude to learn and we want to show and encourage that.’ For those looking to work in the digital sector, a key aim of the workshop was to pass on valuable employability skills. As Richard explained, ‘A shocking fact is that only 16% of people with autism are in full-time paid employment, so it’s really important that people with autism, or anyone who’s not in employment, is given the opportunity and confidence to learn new skills.’
The students all possessed varying degrees of computer skills, but this proved no barrier to learning. Day one started with an introduction to coding languages. Sublime Text, a sophisticated text editor for code, markup and prose, was downloaded onto each student’s laptop and the day was spent exploring the basics of Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) and how this forms the structure of the web page. At the end of the week, the completed projects were presented to a guest audience consisting of family and friends, representatives from Autism Guernsey and special guest Art Leadbeater. Last July, Art undertook a day-long ‘Reversathon’ which saw him reverse his truck around Guernsey twice to raise funds for the workshop. Student Sandra J Robilliard, who is now planning a cycle challenge to raise funds for the advanced course, said: ‘The week was about so much more than learning coding skills, although that is a wonderful and useful skill in itself. It was about building confidence, learning to work together, making new discoveries, and being inspired to believe in ourselves and to achieve. This week was also about overcoming personal challenges, and each attendee’s challenges will have been different.’ Julia Watts, Autism Guernsey’s Autism Services Manager said: ‘It was inspiring for the students to learn from someone diagnosed with Aspergers like Jonathon. The course has opened up the world of coding and it’s exciting to think that this could lead to a career or a new hobby for our attendees.’
following the success of Charlie Carrot, Bobby Broccoli, Grace Garlic and the rest of the Goodness Gang, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is launching a new initiative aimed at educating children about the importance of healthy eating. The Society’s ‘Grow your own Goodness Gang Garden’, which launches on 13th March, will give islanders the opportunity to grow their own produce. It follows last year’s successful Goodness Gang initiative which saw thousands of stuffed toys in the shapes of fruit and vegetables being collected across the Channel Islands. ‘The Goodness Gang teddies were so popular and the feedback we had from islanders was that it had encouraged youngsters to view fruit and vegetables differently. We wanted to build on that because as a community retailer, it’s vitally important that we help spread the healthy eating message,’ said Mark Cox, Chief Operating Officer for The Channel Islands Co-operative Society. ‘The Goodness Gang Garden will be an interactive approach to educating children and their families about the importance of healthy eating and how easy and fun it is to grow your own herbs and vegetables. We’re sure customers will welcome back the Goodness Gang and we’re looking forward to seeing lots of pictures of healthy plants and delicious meals using the freshest possible ingredients.’ There are 20 different seed pots available including spinach, cherry tomatoes, cress, cucumber, basil, dill and thyme. The pots aren’t labelled to encourage people to try something different. Customers will be given a seed pot for every £15 they spend in any Grand Marché, Locale or En Route store excluding fuel, travel, Post Office and cash back. A collector’s tray and an information booklet will be available to purchase. The Society will also be offering seed pots, trays and information booklets to every primary school in the Channel Islands as well as vouchers for pupils to receive a free seed pot. ‘Growing something from a seed is enormously satisfying and we want as many children as possible to experience that and have the chance to try a vegetable or herb that they may not have tasted before.

Working with Waitrose, Woodside Farms in Jersey carried out a successful trial last year (2016) resulting in 1.5 tonnes of fresh ginger being produced; the farm based in Trinity, has been owned and run by the Gallichan family for six generations is looking to produce 20-25 tonnes this year. Sales of ginger have grown at Waitrose by 6% in the last year, as the trend continues for the use of this fresh ingredient in meals and smoothies.
Samantha Edwards, production manager at Woodside Farms said: “We are always looking at ways to expand our range and we are thrilled with how successful the ginger trial has been."
Gary Grace, fresh food buyer, Waitrose, said: “We are committed to supporting local produce and it is brilliant to see more local products arriving into our Channel Islands branches. We think this could even be the first ginger grown in the British Isles." “We have worked closely with the team at Woodside in the past couple of years and we have trialled, with success, a number of new lines with them. They have a wealth
“Growing the ginger had its challenges and climate always impacts this. We continually modified our growing techniques and by the end of November last year a pesticide and herbicide-free crop was hand harvested." The farm trialled a number of crops in 2016 including chard, red sprouts, kalettes (developed by crossing kale and brussels sprouts), beetroot and ginger with the beetroot and ginger being carried forward into 2017 on a larger scale. A limited supply of the locally-grown ginger will be in branch from February onwards. The ginger will be pre-packed into 100 gram perforated packets for optimum shelf life.

Jo also shared news from within Deloitte, explaining that the firm has the ambition to get to a ratio of 25% female partners by 2020. Last year the UK firm promoted 80 individuals to partner, 30% of whom were women, giving the firm 18% female partners overall. The need to support men and women who have taken a career break and encourage them back into the workplace was also discussed, and Jo expressed her hope that Deloitte’s Return to Work programme could soon be launched in the Channel Islands. As well as celebrating women’s success and the Be Bold for Change theme, the evening had a wellbeing theme, massages from Danni Ahne, a beauty therapist; nutrition advice from Sophie Shand and fitness inspiration from Laura Fry of Fry Fit. Alongside this, Jo introduced Deloitte’s chosen charity for the next three years - Guernsey Mind. The firm will be supporting the charity with various activities to help them in their goal to promote and protect good mental health for the people of Guernsey.

SURE BREAKFAST SEMINAR Photography chris george Emma Martins, data protection and information commissioner for the Channel Islands, and John Davison, chief information officer for insurers First Central Group (FCG), were the keynote speakers at Sure’s recent vCloud breakfast seminar held at the Digital Greenhouse. As the first speaker of the morning, Emma Martins focused minds on the need to prepare for next year’s introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Whilst Jersey and Guernsey
lie outside of the EU, GDPR is extra-territorial in its scope, so any island-based businesses wanting to sell to customers within the Union will have to ensure that their data protection policies conform. As jurisdictions, Ms Martins explained that both Jersey and Guernsey are reforming their own data protection laws in order to attain EU equivalence; a move which she said is in both islands’ interests. John Davison, Chief Information Officer of FCG, the parent company of one of the UK’s largest motor insurers - 1st CENTRAL, followed Emma Martins by speaking about the benefits of using the cloud to supply FCG’s IT infrastructure. As a business that processes 400,000 customer requests and two million transactions every day, Mr Davison highlighted the benefits of speed, capacity and consistency of security that the cloud can deliver. Richard Moore, data centre and hosted services product manager at Sure International, rounded off the event by taking a closer look at the enhanced security capabilities of Sure’s vCloud and its use of encryption to protect its clients’ customer data. #13. AVENUE SKATEBOARDS Words ELLIE COOPER
Some people dream about turning their passion into their career, and some people have the foresight to make this dream a reality. For Alex Lamb, founder of the skate brand Avenue and based in Manchester studying a degree in Advertising & Brand Management, but originally from Guernsey, a leap of faith was the key to his success, ‘I’m no expert or master of what I do. Any success I have had so far has stemmed from what I have learnt from a large number of inspirational businessmen and women. I guess you just have to go for it, if you don’t try in life you will never know. Definitely don’t sit back and coast, you only live once.’

When we asked Alex to describe himself in three words, the answer was passion, pure and power; a phonetically pleasing trio that hones in on the core values of Avenue, a brand that began its journey when Alex had just finished A-level education, ‘I had always filmed skateboarding, shot photographs and designed adverts, posters and products. I have a close group of friends spread across the world and I wanted to consolidate our friendship and my work with a name. Business was never my intention but thanks to people supporting my vision and liking what I do, it’s allowed Avenue to expand and evolve into what it is today’. Media is obviously a big part of the brand, as is the music that fits in with company videos, ‘I tend to use music which inspires me and the rest of the team. It really does depend a lot on who’s skating, where, the tricks and the obstacles. Obviously the brand has a certain image to uphold so we will always carefully consider the music. It plays a massive part in the audience’s perception. In fact, the thought that goes into these videos is pretty thought provoking. You’d be wrong to think that the flashing up of Ed Miliband in a recent compilation was random, ‘I’ve always liked to splice in themes of power, corruption and anarchy because it provides an interesting dynamic to the videos. Political and authoritative figures will undoubtable be featured as a result. I’m certainly not the first person to do this, but the way I piece the videos together provides Avenue with its unique aesthetic and symbolises the energy of the team and their skating. On the brand name, Alex says ‘Basically, the word was taken from a book I read many years ago. But the literal meaning of a wide road fitted a skateboard brand like a glove. I always liked the strong lines of the letters A and V so that solidified the choice for me’. The word ‘humble’ comes to mind when speaking with Alex, who when asked where the brand will be in five years’ time says, ‘I honestly haven’t thought about that. I never even thought Avenue would get this far. If it wasn’t for my friends and family across the globe it wouldn’t have. I guess so long as they and the true skateboard enthusiasts are stoked on what I’m doing then that’s what matters most to me. Guernsey is evidently close to this islander’s heart, ‘I like to think that everywhere has its positives and negative features. Comparing the Island with Manchester is pretty tricky. There’s a lot of opportunities and things going on in both places. I love the city lifestyle and the interesting, inspirational people I meet here every day. Home is always going to be where my heart is though you know’. Of course, Avenue stems from a passion for skateboarding, a sport popular within Guernsey but often misinterpreted by the public. On this hot topic, Alex’s is a voice worth listening to.

Get to Know Alex Lamb the Founder of Avenue How old were you when you started skating? I was roughly 11 years old, just as I began secondary education at the Grammar School. Some kids used to jump over trash cans out of a ramp they had built next to my Nan’s house. I wanted to do the same so I pestered my parents for a cheap starter board. (laughs) We went to Woolworths the next day. Any serious accidents? I’ve had fractured wrists and a broken collarbone but nothing serious ( yet... touch wood). What did you think of Guernsey introducing a skate park? Absolutely fantastic. I really couldn’t have been happier to see the island take a giant step in the right direction by building such a brilliant facility for generations of extreme sports enthusiasts to enjoy. Sometimes I feel that it’s easy for people back home to remember how blessed they are to have that places just minutes from where ever they live. Whenever I’m back home, you’ll find me up there that’s for certain. What would you say to a parent scared of letting their child take up skating, due to the possibility of injury? It’s definitely a hobby which can be dangerous and will undoubtedly involve injury at some point. How hard you push yourself and the way you choose to skate will play a big part in the chances of injuries. A lot of it is down to knowing how to avoid injuring yourself though. Sometimes it’s just luck. Don’t be scared. Has the sport has become more popular? Skating has definitely become more popular in recent years. The fashion world has once again taken influence from urban street culture, which resonates from skateboarding. Awareness and acceptance of skateboarding, it’s creativity, the skill involved and the unique culture has allowed many parts of the world to embrace it, which I’m very pleased to see.
Do you think there is a stereotype surrounding skate parks and those that use them? What you say to those that jump to conclusions based on the latter? There is definitely a negative stereotype which lingers over the skateboard culture to those who don’t understand it for what it really is. There’s good and bad everywhere though so it would be unfair to judge anyone with a board before you truly get to know them. For a reader that has never touched a skateboard in their life, how would you describe the experience? Skateboarding is very unique. The feeling each individual gets is personal. For me, it’s the feeling of freedom and no rules. I guess you could say it’s an escape from any negativity or things which might try to get you down from day to day. I love the creativity and discipline you learn. If you have passion for what you do, you can go very far. Don’t be scared of failure. It’s not about that, but how many times you can fail, get back up and learn from your mistakes. A few of ‘Avenue’s’ Instagram posts feature a man wearing a hat that appears to be too small. What is the meaning of this? It’s just fashion (laughs) Is fashion self-expression? Totally and so is skateboarding, well for me it is. I dress and skate from people and sub-cultures which inspire me, then mix it with what you feel comfortable in and what’s practical. I believe it’s subjective though, so everyone will have their own opinion on that. What’s your favourite piece of Avenue clothing? I’ve always liked timeless, clean aesthetics so any of the shirts we produce with the brands core logo on the left chest. Can never go wrong with one of them.

J-P Baudains Red Bull Brand Ambassador
Follow his adventures on Instagram @jp_baudains
Being artist liaison for Wiz Khalifa at the O2 for Culture Clash, assisting athletes at an extreme cliff diving event or organising an immersive theatre production through the backstreets of Soho - these are just a few of the tasks assigned to 21-year-old Guernsey boy Jean-Paul Baudains, a UWE university student brand manager for Red Bull.
LIFESTYLE / FEATURE
Business and Marketing student JP applied for the job in his second year of university, but with such tough competition for the SBM roles - available across universities in the UK - he never thought he would land one. ‘I first heard about the job when I was still at school. A friend of mine was working for Red Bull at the time and he told me all about it – what he’d been able to do, people he’d been lucky enough to meet and events he’d run through the work. It all sounded pretty amazing and right up my street. ‘I liked the brand anyway and it just seemed like a great opportunity. I felt it was something that would really give me purpose rather than just working in a bar during my days off at uni. It was about working to gain life experience and I took it on just to see where it could take me.’ There are a number of different aspects to being an SBM, he explained. ‘There’s the university side of things which involves brand personality hacks (quirky ways of giving people a can of Red Bull and giving them the message to work hard this year e.g. placing cans around the library for people working late), third party event support (putting Red Bull fridges or speakers in the artists’ or athletes’ changing rooms or around big events) and then direct working of the big branded Red Bull events - and that’s what everyone wants to do. ‘Whenever I’ve had the chance to work those major events, I’ve put in 110%. They range from an immersive theatre production through the backstreets of Soho to cliff diving in Wales. ‘This job changes every day. One day I could be artist liaison for Wiz Kalifa and the next day you could just be carrying a crate of red bull cans across university. Working at the cliff diving has been a major highlight. The respect you have for the athletes is crazy. You can’t even understand how they are able to do what they do and it’s incredible to watch that absolute determination and sheer bravery.’ Now in his final year at university, JP
has truly pushed the boundaries of what it means to achieve something ‘outside the box’ at University. ‘It’s not just about good grades. Yes they are important, but so are memorable experiences and lasting friendships. That’s what I’ll look back on and Red Bull has been a big part of that.’ He said he found himself lacking inspiration in his first year of university. ‘In my first year, I’ll be honest and say that I was quite bored. You have work and lectures, but there is also a lot of free time and it wasn’t a good feeling to be twiddling my thumbs. I wanted to ‘get moving’ with my life. Having this job whilst I’ve been at uni has kept my mind focused on what I need to achieve in my day, kept me organised and given me something to strive for outside of exams and essays.’ Whilst proud of his achievements, JP remains humble and is constantly setting himself goals for the future. ‘For me… this has been the best thing that could have happened to me at this age and I want to use everything I’ve learnt in my future career and life generally. ‘It’s given me so much more confidence to speak my mind and speak in front of other people. It’s also transformed my ability to organise myself and solve problems. It’s one thing to work to a deadline at uni, but when there is real business at stake, you hold yourself even more accountable. ‘I’ve also tried to bring the people around me into the job as well. So my girlfriend Libby comes to a lot of events and I’ve had other friends come along too. I’ve also got to know the people at Red Bull and I’ve made lasting friends there, which is something I really value.’ Being an SBM isn’t suited to only one type of person either, he added. ‘I’ve met so many people who have the same job as me in different parts of the country.
Words Jessamy Baldwin #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE

The job can be done well by so many different people, whether you’re quieter or more outspoken, there is a way for you to shine.’ After finishing his degree this summer, JP is planning to ‘get out in the world’ again – having caught the travel bug on his gap year back in 2014. ‘I took a year out before university where I worked for an IT company, taught sports in Fiji and travelled across Australia, Thailand and Bali. I’m itching for another adventure! This time I’m planning to go to Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South America, but who knows where the trip may take me.’ After his trip, JP plans to start a four year Professional Yacht Cadetship - based in the Isle of Wight. As a gifted surfer, talented wakeboarder and keen sailor who grew up navigating Guernsey waters and tides, it comes as no surprise that his love for the sea has shaped his professional dreams. ‘It involves nine months tuition, after which I’ll move on to working on superyachts as a deckhand. That will allow me to gain sea miles to get the necessary qualifications,’ he said. ‘It’s always been my dream to work on boats and at sea. It’s where I feel at home.’ JP said his aspirations for the future are more based on being ‘happy’ rather than financial fulfilment. ‘I don’t think money will ever make me “happy”, as it were. Not to sound cliché, but as long as I have a strong network of family and friends and I’m living with a smile, I’ll see myself as a success. ‘As long as you’re happy you’re successful in my eyes. ‘Don’t do what you think you should do or what someone tells you to do, because you’ll go to bed each night wondering… what if?’ When he’s not working for Red Bull or studying, you’ll find JP either surfing, skateboarding or playing with the nearest dog or cat. Any will do!

Words SARAH FROOME, ISLANDGIRLABROAD
It’s early morning in San Jose and the sun is just rising over the mountains. I’m swinging in a hammock contemplating how on earth I can do justice to my last 6 weeks in Mexico in a few hundred words. Mexico is swimming in culture, its beaches would rival many tropical destinations and the food, well that’s a another mouthwatering story altogether. Whether it be the beautiful coastline, the mountains of the North or the culture packed central regions, this country has something for everyone.
With crystal clear waters that resemble something out of a holiday brochure, the Caribbean coast is the perfect destination for relaxation and wonderfully laid back vibes. It has its fair share of magnificent ruins and caters for every budget which is why it’s such a honeypot for so many high flying tourists and backpackers alike. Jealousy inducing beaches contribute to the main draw of this part of Mexico along with its unique share of centoes (a natural swimming hole) which have become a popular place for diving enthusiasts. Immersing yourself in the crystal clear waters of the underground caves and swimming through the mangroves is a special experience and one not to be missed. Lazy days on the beach with the occasional dip in the azure waters is nothing short of a perfect way to spend the day, you may find it hard to drag yourself away but there is so much more to be explored.
Heading inland, the areas of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Puebla offer a diverse range of culture and wonderful scenery. From ruins deep in the jungle of Palenque to beautifully secluded waterfalls, it really is an adventurer’s dream. Incredible stone buildings stand majestically surrounded by the thick jungle, ready for exploring. It’s a wonderful way to experience Mexico, immersing yourself in nature and discovering the ancient history of its people. To appease all the senses, the local cuisine has to be tried in these regions, varying so much from each town, it’s a culinary delight to savour every possible food available.

The cities are rich in culture too and not to be missed. Although their pace may be a little faster than the beautifully tranquil jungle explorations, there is so much to see in the cities of Mexico. Surprisingly vibrant in the arts, the galleries and museums in Puebla, Mexico city and San Cristobal are absolutely superb. Spending a few days in the cities is easy to do as there is so much to soak in. Colonial vibes, bustling markets and beautifully painted buildings, they really are a delight to see. Churches are a prominent feature in these regions also, and whether you’re religious or not, there are some stunning forms of architecture to be admired.
Along the Pacific coast you’ll find a surfers paradise. A long cry from the Caribbean beaches you’ll find in the Yucatan peninsula but every bit as desirable. Puerto Escondido and Mazunte offer a beautifully laid back vibe with surfers, hippies and yogis a plenty. This is life in the slow lane and my goodness it’s delightful. Take your shoes off, feel the sand in your toes and chill with a good book and a delicious smoothie, it’s the perfect place for a bit of rest and relaxation and with stunning sunsets guaranteed I can’t think of a better scene for it.
With so much diversity in one country it’s amazing where you can find yourself from one day to the next. Only a few hours driving will take you from a picturesque beach paradise to a charming and scenic little town in the mountains where hiking trails are abundant. The options are endless and whichever trail you decide to follow leads you to an explosion of colour, culture and adventure. The only way to truly experience its beauty is to see for yourself, so…what are you waiting for?!

THE RESTAURANTEUR POWER COUPLE What makes a business successful? Why do some go the distance and others flounder? According to the couple that brought us Le Petit Bistro, Le Petit Café and Octopus, it’s the correct mix of passion, drive and humility, as well as having the right team behind you. Delphine and Mike Pesrin came to the island in November 2002 and started working at Christies, where owner Howard Holland spotted their enthusiasm and talent. ‘It was rewarding because we climbed the ladder quite quickly and so were able to take on bigger and bolder challenges. We were given the opportunity of running a new restaurant, which was originally going to be a burger bar,’ said Delphine. They decided that burgers weren’t for them and the idea of a French café was mooted. It wasn’t long before Le Petit Bistro sauntered on to the Pollet with it’s chic and inviting atmosphere and mouth watering menu. ‘We were given a lot of creative freedom with Le Petit Bistro which was wonderful, although we were still essentially employees. A few years later we managed to buy 20% of the shares and by 2009 we became the sole owners of the company. It was scary and a huge learning curve, but for us, the opportunity to learn and grow is everything,’ said Delphine. As I sit with the couple, it is clear that they eat, sleep and breath their work. For many years they worked 16-18 hours a day, 7 days a week; their children join them at the restaurants after school and on the rare day off they watch Chefs Table or try out other restaurants around the island. ‘We are very driven and it is our passion. We always want to be learning and growing. It’s the way we were brought up. Both our parents were in catering so you could say it’s in our blood,’ says Mike. For many years the couple had their eyes on the Half Moon Café and when it became available they jumped at the opportunity.
a ‘Rolls Royce’. When you work 16-18 hours a day, you want your environment to be pleasant. ‘Running a restaurant is hard work. The long hours can take their toll physically and there is a shortage of chefs and waiters on the island and also across the UK and France. It’s why we decided to close our restaurants two days a week. We want to keep the brilliant teams that we have and not stretch them to breaking point with no days off. Now they can go and enjoy the sunshine, go on weekend breaks and have a life as well as work,’ said Mike. No one can deny that the couple have provided Guernsey with unique, friendly and delicious restaurants during their time on the island. And the couple appreciate what Guernsey has given them and their family. ‘We wouldn't want to live anywhere else. For a population of 65,000, the quality of the restaurants is incredible and those of us in the trade meet regularly and learn from each other. We also see the same faces again and again. We have served our regulars through births and anniversaries, deaths and graduations. We’re in the background but it affects us and can be emotional,’ said Delphine. ‘There’s also the local produce that is available here. We have fish and scallops still alive when they arrive in the kitchen; meat and veg. We try and source as much from Guernsey as we can so everything is fresh. Guernsey has been really good to us and we want to continue to offer something back,’ said Mike. ‘We’re not finished,’ says Delphine. ‘We still have a way to go with Octopus, whilst also ensuring Le Petit Bistro and café continue to run smoothly. Then who knows?’ Perhaps one day the couple will slow down, but their ambitions to provide the tastiest and most enjoyable dining experience for islanders doesn't show any sign of abating just yet. Words Samata russell
‘Le Petit Bistro was our first baby but it was not ours from start to finish. We always had the dream of opening our own restaurant and that is what Octopus is. We were involved in every design choice from the interior décor and logos to the menus and food served. We are so blessed with the position also. Sometimes if I've been up since 4 o'clock and I'm finishing my work at night I see the full moon across the water and it takes my breath away,’ said Mike. With it’s patterned floor, chunky mirrors and panoramic views across Castle Cornet and Herm, Octopus has a style of it’s own. The kitchen was purpose built to a high standard for efficiency and aesthetics; Mike describes it as

Easter is a cracking time of year (no pun intended). Spring has sprung! There’s chocolate eggs galore, it’s not quite so chilly outside and there’s two glorious bank holidays which means more time spent with loved ones and less time, in the words of RiRi, at ‘work, work, work, work, work, work’. With Christmas shenanigans long, long gone and summer still hiding shyly behind spring’s coat tails, Easter festivities couldn’t come sooner. Easter Sunday lands on April 16 this year and with those extra days of ‘you’ time in mind, I’ve rounded up a few ideas to get you out and about or indoors and chillaxing. Whatever floats your boat. Did you know that the custom of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, for whom the egg was a symbol of life? So there you have it, chocolate is life. Proof at long last.

Hopeless Romantic is the upcoming third studio album by American singer-songwriter Michelle Branch – who was all the rage back in the early noughties. In fact, you’ll be hard pressed to find a chick-flick from that era without her on the soundtrack. Scheduled for release on April 7 through Verve Records, this will be Branch's first full-length album to be released since Hotel Paper (2003). The album is expected to have a laid back, rock & roll sound.
The Chainsmokers

The duo (Drew Taggart and Alex Pall) will head out on a world tour soon after. You can catch them at Belsonic on 26 June or Creamfields on 25 August. Last year the band held on to the No.1 spot for four weeks with their track “Closer” ft. Halsey. Their recent singles "Paris" and "Something Just Like This" ft. Coldplay have taken radio and playlists by storm.

Marlena: A Novel by Julie Buntin
Everything about fifteen-year-old Cat’s new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter, until she meets her neighbour, the manic, beautiful Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena’s orbit. Within the year, Marlena is dead, drowned in six inches of icy water in the woods nearby. Now, decades later, when a ghost from that pivotal year surfaces unexpectedly, Cat must try to forgive herself and move on, even as the memory of Marlena keeps her tangled in the past. Set for release on 4 April, this is an electric debut novel about love, addiction, and loss; the story of two girls and the year that will cost one her life, and define the other’s for decades. Definitely one for the reading list!
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
This book is a few years old now (published 2013), but it remains, for me, one of the most moving and thought provoking texts I’ve ever read. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything in the wake of her mother’s death and failing marriage. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humour, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened and ultimately healed her.

Prison Break
The popular show returns for a fifth season on 4 April. Fist pumps all round! The first four seasons are available on Netflix, so there’s every opportunity for a full-on TV series binge this Easter if you’re a newbie. The general premise? Due to a political conspiracy, an innocent man is sent to death row and his only hope is his brother, who makes it his mission to deliberately get himself sent to the same prison in order to break the both of them out, from the inside.
Good Witch
If you haven’t tried this show yet, I thoroughly encourage you to do so. It’s an honest, feel-good, simple drama with a touch of magic on the side – think ‘Bewitched’ meets ‘Hart of Dixie’. A mysterious, beautiful woman named Cassie Nightingale (Catherine Bell) and her daughter (Bailee Madison) live in an old, historic house which is reputed to be haunted by its original owner, "The Grey Lady". When Dr. Sam Radford moves in next door to Grey House with his son, they are charmed by the magical motherdaughter duo.

AWAY: If you’re looking for a last minute Easter getaway, Prague is a no brainer. Immerse yourself in fairy-tale architecture, take in fascinating history and gorge on Czech dumplings. The Prague Easter Market takes over the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square until April 12. Wooden huts displaying handicrafts, puppets, dolls and hand-painted Easter eggs adorn the square. Visitors can sample local Czech specialties trdelník, a sugar-coated pastry and klobása, a barbecued sausage. I’d recommend three full days and a comfy pair of shoes – you’ll want to explore it all.

With Easter comes a renewed energy and optimism which in part I am sure comes from more daylight hours, lighter evenings, and warmer sunshine (ideally!)
We won’t stop there though, as if that isn’t enough there is a bouncy castle there too, raffles and some food and drink stands.
At Island FM we are able to pack away our thick winter clothing and venture out and about much more and that is always exciting.
Come and see the Island FM team and our very own Daniel the donkey will also be causing his usual mayhem!
We are very pleased to be involved again in the Easter Eggtravaganza this year sponsored by Regency Bedding.
Stop it I hear you say……well there is more…..the Cherry Godfrey cash shower will be there too so please look out for that.
If you are looking for something exciting to do over Easter then this is certainly worth taking the kids along to or indeed for the kids amongst us all.
There is of course a more serious element to this event. All the proceeds this year go to the GSPCA so we want as many people there as possible.
It would be lovely to see as many people as possible at the event on the 16th April at Rue Maingy.

I recently sat down with talented singer-songwriter Empara, who is quickly taking over the UK music scene. We chatted about her Guernsey roots, Tarantino, her ‘androgynous writing style’ and her plans for the future. Words Jessamy Baldwin Guernsey-born music artist Empara – or as we know her, Chloe Curran – has gone from strength to strength over the past year. With over 200,000 views across YouTube, tracks on iTunes/Spotify and an exciting project just around the corner (soon to be announced), the sky’s the limit for our girl from ‘the rock’.
‘One of my earliest memories was my dad’s obsession with Eminem. My parents bought me a karaoke machine and I recorded myself rapping over his record. Thankfully that turned into singing, but my taste hasn’t changed much since.’
researching artists and videographers with whom to work.
Guernsey will ‘always be home’ to Empara.
The 25-year-old now lives in London where she is rapidly becoming a star in her own right. She has already worked with Kendrick Lamar’s producer Rahki as well as Kanye West’s producer Andrew Dawson, and her track ‘Shine on You’ was just featured on Broadchurch’s new season trailer.
‘Guernsey is extremely special to me, it’s where I grew up – it’s what gives me a different perspective on everything I do. When I fly home I love to soak it all in. It’s such a tranquil place and so different to the claustrophobia of a big city. It always provokes some creative emotions for me. Most of all I love being back to see my family and friends.
Her unique sound is something that sets her apart from the crowd, but the desire to be different was never a driving force.
Empara’s unique sound exudes soul, hip-hop, R&B and alternative vibes, but is powerfully ‘genre-less’. Her debut track, the stripped back and ethereal ‘Wanderlust’, caught the ears of many (including Radio 1’s Annie Mac) and her bold, dark follow up ‘The Come Down’ saw her travel to Japan to shoot a music video. With inspiration stemming from her family’s diverse music taste, Empara said she is ‘always wanted to be a singer’. ‘I know everyone says that, but there’s never been any doubt that I wouldn’t be. I’ve always loved music and it was very much instilled into me to be creative and experimental with my music taste, as my parents always have been.
‘I always felt that I had to make a leap into a bigger pond though, if I really wanted to pursue music. After school, I did a history degree in London whilst continuing to write and record on the side. ‘Once I graduated I put everything into it and recorded as much original music as possible and showed anyone who would listen. I ended up writing for a few other artists and eventually got discovered by my now manager and the rest is history!’ An average day for Empara consists of writing and recording in her home studio or going to other artists’ studios to collaborate and write. The rest of the time she is busy #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE
‘I’m lucky that every day my job revolves around being creative and doing something I genuinely love!’
‘I feel like if you go out of your way to try to do something different, a lot of the time it won’t transpire that way. I can only try to be myself and create music that I would actually want to hear and if it’s perceived as different then I’m happy. ‘To me, everything that I write and produce is my own tailor-made genre of everything that I love to listen to. Then you add my slightly unusual voice and my semi androgynous style of writing and it’s just my own medley of madness!’ With the music industry constantly in flux, Empara is hopeful that the notion of storytelling -behind all music - will never die regardless of industry changes. ‘With a shift towards online streaming and playlists, I think it’s easy to tailor your style and approach towards getting heard, as opposed to considering a body of work as a whole.’ ‘I would like to think that the concept of the

I can’t ignore my dream of creating bodies of work that I can be proud of with a proper story telling narrative as all my favourite albums do so well. ‘My album so far consists of a trilogy linking the album concept together, my track ‘Wanderlust’ being the first of the three songs that make up the trilogy. I can only hope that when the album comes out, people will listen to it as a whole and

hear the story I want to tell with my music. ‘Nothing beats the feeling you get when you are sitting watching TV or listening to the radio and your music comes on. Broadchurch recently used my music for their advert and it was funny hearing something I wrote in my bedroom be played on my TV.’ Being a success is something you have to work for she says, and Empara is by no means done fulfilling her dreams. ‘To be successful, you’ve got to believe in yourself first and foremost. Everyone else will have their opinions, but the one thing you have to remember is that no one else is you and you have to be unapologetic about that to survive and achieve great things. Have a strong team of people around you who really believe in you and share your goals. Also, a positive mind set is invaluable.

racing, winning, sponsorship, and the future If Guernsey’s youngest motorsport winter series champion has any worries about living up to his father’s reputation, he’s not showing it. Sebastian (Seb) Priaulx, son of legendary triple World Touring Car Champion Andy, is looking forward to the immediate future. In fact he’s positively enthusiastic about it – almost overexcited – he’s really passionate about life behind the wheel. “I’m looking forward to this season,” Seb tells me “but it’s going to be hard”. Then, he tells me why. Words tumble out, barely able to keep pace with the thoughts he’s trying to express. Despite his youth – Seb is only 16 years old – he has such an in-depth knowledge of racing that a motorsport ignoramus like myself simply can’t keep up. Whether I stutter, or the click-click-click of my note taking falters, Priaulx Sr. - who is, no doubt, more au fait with clueless reporters than his son is at this stage in his career – senses my confusion and steps in: “What he means,” Andy says “is that when you qualify in pole position, you will usually win the race. But in the Ginetta, because you’re racing in sports cars, the driver in first creates a big slipstream that benefits the car behind. So you have closer races with a cluster of cars all leading together, and this makes winning harder.” “Yeah, that’s right,” Seb says, with a slightly abashed laugh.
The Champion Returns The Ginetta Championship that Seb and Andy are referring to is one of the big UK racing events. Next season, Seb hopes to return as the champion. Since I last spoke to the Priaulx family, Seb has gone on to glory, winning the Ginetta Junior Championship Winter Series. To get there, he won two out of four races, and placed in pole position four times. I can tell that this is no mean feat from the obvious pride in Andy’s voice.
Seb, however, is remarkably humble for a young man fresh from sporting victory. He’s obviously pleased to have won, but he doesn’t make a big thing about it. “It was a great end to the season,” he says cheerily. Seb is too polite to appear competitive. But I know that he must be, because you don’t win the UK’s longest running junior series unless you really want to. It takes everything to get there: money, luck, natural talent, and (most of all): a hell of a lot of hard work. Possibly guessing that his son’s niceness is misleading me, Andy sets me straight: Seb wants to win the Ginetta again, and “he’s one of the favourites”. Andy and Seb have decided that racing in the Ginetta Juniors one more time is the wisest move for Seb’s career. At 16, Seb is still young enough to take part, although Andy says he is “ready” to move on. The reason he doesn’t want him to is simple: the Ginetta Junior Championship is a really hard race to win. “It’ll make him a better driver,” Andy says.
Looking at the Bigger Picture This decision – to suffer through another tough year in the Ginetta before moving on – typifies Seb’s nascent career in motorsports. If he’s going to go pro, and one day enter the F1, it will take more than winning races tomorrow, next month, and next year. It will take the ability to extend his focus beyond the short term. That means choosing tough races, searching for sponsors, and thinking about the bigger picture. When I spoke to Seb’s mum, Jo, a few months ago, Seb was on the look out for a sponsor. Andy is “very pleased to announce” that he has found one. 1st CENTRAL, a motor insurance group specializing in younger drivers who’s parent company, FCG, is based in Guernsey, has signed a long-term sponsorship deal with the youngest Priaulx behind the wheel.
#13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE
It’s easy to see why Seb’s a good fit for 1st CENTRAL. His combination of down to earth humility and enthusiasm for driving makes him a great brand ambassador; he works hard, wins races, and doesn’t brag about it. 1st CENTRAL is, equally, a great catch for the young racer; although Andy tells me he will almost certainly have to find further sponsors to enter the F1: “The 1st CENTRAL deal has taken a big weight off my mind, but there are still a lot of challenges ahead, funding wise. If he wants to go on to F1, this is only the beginning.” As I learnt last time I wrote about Seb’s career, getting a place at that table can cost millions – no matter how good you are at driving.
More than Just a Sport For Seb, racing is more than just a sport. The pressure of living with uncertainty, with the knowledge that even though he’s really good at racing, he might not get to the F1 simply because he can’t raise the money, must be huge. You wouldn’t know it to talk to him, though. Seb lives and breathes racing. He pushes his body to attain the levels of fitness required from an elite sportsman on a daily basis. In his spare time, he races from his bedroom – courtesy of a games console – against players from all over the globe. This is not a hobby, or even a job – it’s a calling. In the short term, we all know what’s next for Seb: the Junior Ginetta Series 2017. And, if the world makes sense, he’ll rack up another victory before moving on. In the longterm, it’s harder to know what’s in store for Guernsey’s youngest motorsport hero. One thing that is beyond doubt, though, is this: whether Seb can find the sponsorship he needs to take his career to the next level or not, he definitely deserves to get there.

So, you want to run a marathon . . . Training for a marathon isn’t an exact science but an effective and efficient training programme does require a number of essential elements. With just under five months to go until the Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon on Sunday 27 August, event director Peter Head recommends the types of runs that should underpin your training schedule to prepare you to complete the 26 mile and 385 yards course successfully.
RECOVERY RUNS
These should be at an easy pace and you should feel relaxed. Training for a marathon requires your body to work harder than ever so you need to see improvement without breaking down. You should be able to hold a conversation throughout recovery runs which shouldn’t last longer than 45 minutes. These runs allow your body to adapt to the training workload.
TEMPO RUNS
They’re slightly uncomfortable and require concentration but they will be your most valuable workouts as they’ll improve your running efficiency and aerobic capacity. These should be at a controlled, brisk pace to help improve your lactate threshold levels – that’s the speed above which your body struggles to cope with the lactic acid created by burning energy without oxygen. Runners should aim to do a temp session each week, starting from a 25 minute run, increasing to 45 minutes.
LONG RUNS These are vital. A marathon is a very long run, so run at an easy pace. Concentrate on increasing the time on your feet rather than worrying about distance. Start by running for at least an hour and gradually, towards the end of the schedule, build up to three hours on your feet. These runs improve muscular endurance and condition your body to burn fat as its primary fuel source. They also prepare you physically and mentally for the task ahead.
HILL RUNS
These develop strength in your muscles and tendons without putting them under stress during faster runs. Run up a 10% gradient for about two minutes at a steady pace. Turn immediately at the top, jog down, then turn and repeat three to four times with no recovery. Runners should increase the amount of hill runs each week to between eight and 10 times per session.
FARTLEK
This is a Swedish term that means ‘speed play’ and involves bursts of effort at a brisk pace over a variety of distances with variable recovery times. For instance, run hard between lampposts, then recover between the next two, hard again between the next two, recover to the next, and so on. In a typical three to four mile session you should manage six to 10 hard stages of between one and five minutes. It’s perhaps surprising, but the last and most important tip in terms of marathon preparation is.....
REST
Your body will go through a lot while you’re training, so to help cope with the added workload, rest is just as important as running. Listen to your body and heed any warning signs. Rest allows physical and mental recovery and gives your body time to adapt. And don’t forget to do a 10 minute warm up and cool down before and after each session. If 2017 is the year you want to take on a marathon challenge, there’s still time to sign up for this year’s Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon on Sunday 27 August. Runners can take part in the event as a relay team of two, completing a half marathon each, or a team of five, completing sections between 3.8 and 6.6 miles each. Funds raised from this year’s marathon will be donated to Guernsey Mind for its Team Talk initiative which is helping to raise awareness of mental health issues that may occur in local sporting teams. Runners can secure their place at the starting line by registering online at www.guernseymarathon.gg #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE

is made up of a group of islanders, their families and Carers who share their stories of living with disability in the island of Guernsey, giving voice to the members of the Guernsey Disability Alliance. We All Matter Eh? (WAME) has just launched a new initiative called ‘Accessible Activities’. The initiative is focused on removing the barriers that exist for disabled islanders who wish to take a full and active part in society. In this campaign the focus is on sport and leisure activities to increase access and choice, raise awareness, acceptance and an increase participation. This in turn will improve physical and mental wellbeing participants. The main objectives of are to raise awareness of all the opportunities available to islanders with disabilities, to increase participation in sports, clubs and activities and to empower clubs to be more accessible i.e. physical access, customer service, information and communication. Disabled Access Day was held from the 10th to the 12th of March and in the week running up to this event a number of projects were showcased, one of which is #AccessibleActivities campaign. WAME would like to find
more clubs locally that we can be added to their directory of accessible clubs. It’s often found that whilst provision, accessibility and support can be found at clubs, it may not be known to the public. Through the campaign WAME hope to increase GDA membership for groups and members not currently well represented. To also increase membership within these groups and clubs and help with potential sponsorship / funding opportunities for them will therefore better disabled islanders physical and mental wellbeing by taking part. GDA’s mission is to give equality of opportunity for disabled islanders and carers in Guernsey and believe the way to do that is to change how Guernsey thinks about disability. By becoming an influencing force, the GDA can improve social inclusion and access for persons with disabilities and to campaign against social exclusion of persons with disabilities.

Teacher Outdoor Education and Learning Outside the Classroom
At Le Murier we have always felt that taking our students on residential trips is important for their personal and interpersonal development, and therefore students from the former Valnord School, then Oakvale School and now currently Le Murier School are offered as many residential trips as possible throughout their school career. We have developed a programme which meets the needs of the individual students and is fully integrated into our curriculum. These residential trips have powerful learning opportunities for the students and strengthen student/staff relationships. A typical student, throughout their time with us, would experience trips to Herm, Lihou, Jersey, Wales and France, not only getting geographically further afield but also longer in duration. Our students with more complex needs visit a specialist provision in Jersey. There are many aspects to our residential trips such as; planning and preparing for each trip, trying new and challenging activities, visiting different places, overcoming worries and anxieties about being away from home, living with other people etc. etc. All the trips offer short, medium and long term benefits to our students. In the short term, residentials offer opportunities for students and staff to develop trust between each other, as students feel more comfortable with each other they are more able to empathise with each other’s differences. In the medium term, residentials can increase motivation, engagement and participation in lessons which enhances confidence, resilience and wellbeing. The students’ learning continues to progress, including developing skills in independent living, selfmanagement, communication, team work and problem solving. These are underlying elements of our curriculum and have always been; these areas now feature within the new Guernsey Big Picture curriculum. In the long term, residentials can lead to improved achievement, progress and attainment as well as improved knowledge, skills and understanding. They can also have an impact on improving behaviour and attendance. Residentials also provide students with skills to work towards and achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Twenty-four years ago, we started holding “The Everest Challenge” event to raise funds, as these trips were becoming prohibitive due to increased travel costs and the requirement for higher staff to student ratios. Therefore, by having a fund, we can make these residential trips affordable and accessible to all our students and ensure our residential trips are fully inclusive. The money raised covers all the staffing costs so that they are not passed onto the students and it funds the purchase of specialist equipment, such as rucksacks, wetsuits, buoyancy aids etc. so that no student needs to purchase their own for, what could be possibly only one use.

BUY SMART! Now an internationally established and recognised form of funding, peer-to-peer lending has been pioneered by Oracle in Guernsey. It has become extremely popular thanks to the low interest rates on deposits, and restrictions on lending by high street banks. Often abbreviated to P2P, peer-to-peer finance is an innovative way of enabling individuals to borrow and lend. Those who have money can to put it to work for competitive returns by lending to other individuals, and those looking to borrow can benefit from attractive rates compared to traditional lenders. Pioneered in the UK in 2005, the P2P industry has grown at an astounding rate, and by 2014 it had provided £1.2 billion in funds to UK consumers and businesses. Experts have forecasted that the sector will continue to double in size every six months going forward, which highlights the enormous potential of this model.
Lorna Brown joined Retail Banking in July 1986 as a school leaver and worked her way up to Associate Director level over a 28 year period. She joined Oracle Finance in 2013 as a Business Development Manager and subsequently gained promotion to Commercial Manager in 2015. During her career she has gained 25 years of lending experience.
Oracle is a highly experienced group of professional advisers based in Guernsey, who provide effective financial solutions and insurance products with an emphasis on personal service and long-standing relationships. In a sea of financial and insurance providers, Oracle is a strong, independent partner and they aim to look after your best interests over the long term. Their advice is clear, jargon-free and tailored to your individual circumstances.
Oracle’s expert team boasts over 40 years of experience in underwriting, meaning they are perfectly placed to arrange lending facilities via a network of private individuals, allowing you to reap the benefits of P2P.

Prepping your pool for Summer Words THEO LEWORTHY With summer fast approaching, many islanders are, presumably, beginning to think about their ‘beach bodies’. Looking good is never more appealing than when the island’s dressed in sun. But it’s not just people that can benefit from a seasonal makeover – swimming pools can sparkle in the summer sun too. Whether you already own a swimming pool or you’re thinking of having one installed, the suwmmer is the time to have it looking its best. What better way is there to cool off after a hard day than taking a dip in the privacy of your own backyard? Or maybe you love the idea of cranking out the barbeque and inviting some friends round for a pool party? Whatever plans you have for your pool – be it real or, as yet, imaginary – here’s a list of Guernsey Life’s top tips for making your pool a feature you can be proud of when the weather lifts.
Pressure washing your pool deck If you have a concrete pool deck, then a pressure wash before the summer starts is a must. Whether it’s down to weathering from the elements or simply wet feet continually walking all over it, it is inevitable that your pool deck will become dirty. And it’s also inevitable that you’ll forget just how different it looks when it’s clean. Getting out the pressure washer will let you blast away the layer of dirt that has accrued on your pool deck, making it look as good as new. beautifully. Bridges For many of you, this will be too out there. And for many more of you, your pool simply won’t be large enough to accommodate this rather eccentric feature. But hey, if you’ve got the space for it, and you want something a little different, have you ever thought of having a bridge built over your pool? From a purely functional perspective, it provides a convenient walkway across the water, serves as a great place to take photos from, and gives the kids something to cannonball off. And from a design perspective, it certainly adds drama. Just remember, if you go for it, to keep an eye out for trolls. Especially on Facebook. Getting a coloured pool finish Forget white finishes for swimming pools – it’s all about colour nowadays. Coloured finishes can make your pool look more natural and inviting, and are a great way to attain the ‘Carribean look’ that many pool owners aspire to. But be aware, working with colour in water is tricky. Water is clear, and it refracts sunlight, which means that the water in your pool won’t simply reflect the colour of your pool finish. For this reason, it’s always best to get a professional in and discuss the effect you’d like in detail. Water features Whether you choose a relaxing waterfall or something more ornate, a water feature can have a powerful impact on your pool and its surrounding area. Some of the more popular options include faux rock grottos and fountains. You might also want to consider non-water features, such as rockeries or particular plantings, in the area surrounding your swimming pool to give it its #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE

A separate coping colour If you have (or are planning to have) a concrete swimming pool, you will need ‘coping’ to act as a cap for the edge of the pool. For those of you that are not fluent in pool-speak, this is the border that runs around the edge of the pool. While coping is primarily a functional element in pool construction, it has also become a highly stylistic one, and offers the opportunity to provide a decorative accent for your pool. For this reason, coping is usually present not just on concrete pools but all types of pool. By picking a colour that compliments your pool and its wider surroundings, you can add a touch of flare to the installation. Embrace the elements You can give your pool an added dimension by combining water with its elemental antithesis: fire. That might mean the addition of a fire pit or fire bowl to your property. Firey features like this are great for supplying heat at after hours pool parties and barbeques, but they also add a warm light to the area that sparkles on the surface of the water. They’re a great way to add a little rustic class to your pool area, and are more than worth the relatively modest price you’ll pay for them. Tiles and paving Geometric tiles have made a comeback. Uniform shapes like squares and rectangles can add a sense of ordered calm to your pool, and modern advances in glasswork mean that you now have more options to choose from than ever before. Channel Island Ceramics is just one of the local companies that offer a wide range of pool tiles, as well as paving options if you like the idea of a poolside patio. Furniture and surroundings One of the easiest ways to make your pool extra inviting this summer is to splash out on some beautiful pool-side furniture. This doesn’t have to mean new furniture, and it doesn’t have to mean expensive furniture – but it does mean picking the right chairs, tables, parasols, etc., to contextualise your pool and provide a surrounding area that compliments it beautifully. #13. SILVERBACK SUNGLASSES HOW A LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR WANTS TO BRING OUT FASHION’S WILD SIDE There’s no great strategy behind the founding of Silverback Sunglasses. Nor is there a catchy story to inspire wannabe entrepreneurs. But you’d never know that from looking at its products, or its website. Silverback founder, Matt Watson, told me over the phone: “I’d love to tell you I spotted a niche in the market, but unfortunately it wasn’t that calculated. I just wanted to do something I love, and I love sunglasses. That’s the genesis.” Silverback’s business model is really simple, and it starts, basically, with two problems that are present in the wider world of sunglasses: cost, and breakages.
#13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE
BUSINESS / FEATURE
taking on the monopoly “Luxottica owns 70% of the sunglasses market, and they’re a vertical brand.” Matt tells me. What this basically means is that Luxottica has cut out the various middlemen in the sunglasses industry. You may not have heard of the company, but it owns Oakley, Rayban, and pretty much all of the big sunglasses brands. It also has the license to make and sell sunglasses for almost all of the big fashion brands, like Prada and Coach. The Italian eyewear giant doesn’t stop there, either. Not only does it make almost all the product, it owns most of the dedicated retailers, too. Names like Sunglasses Hut, Pearle Vision and LensCrafters – they’re all Luxottica. When you close the gap like this between manufacturing and distribution, you end up basically controlling the whole market. What does this mean? According to Matt: “They can keep prices high.” “Is this really that much of a problem?” I ask him. “Yes. Sunglasses shouldn’t cost that much.” fragile fashion The second problem at the heart of Silverback’s business model concerns the relationship between retailer, product, and customer. Sunglasses are, by definition, not a lifetime product. People sit on their sunglasses. They fall off when you’re surfing or skating and get scratched or broken. Your kids chew the arms until they’re mangled and lumpy and uncomfortable to wear.
Matt’s solution to this is to change the sunglasses buying model from a single point transaction – essentially, you buy sunglasses from someone, then you’re on your own – into a “value model” that works over time. That means Silverback Sunglasses want to protect their customers from the inevitable by offering a 3-year guarantee: for three years after you buy your sunglasses, if they get damaged, you just email the company, and they’ll send you a new pair. “Three years feels about right,” Matt tells me “It’s enough time to build a relationship, and I think people will recognize the commitment. Silverback Sunglasses’ will be operating their new model in time for summer, if you’re interested in giving it a try. Just go to their site, and when you purchase a pair of sunglasses, a dropdown box should appear through which you can sign up to the service. building a brand Silverback Sunglasses was born to disrupt these problems that Matt, the “accidental entrepreneur”, to describe him in his own words, stumbled onto. But there’s no way it could have happened 20 years ago. “We exist because of the internet,” Matt tells me. What he means is that in this connected world, there’s room for little guys like us to squeeze big players like Luxottica out of the way just enough to get noticed. Because Luxottica might be able to buy up all the ad time on TV, but it can’t control what people post on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or Periscope. And it can’t control what they think of Matt’s glasses, or who those people tell.

In the world of social media, casual conversations might be global. They might consist of hundreds, or even thousands, of people reading a tweet in India, Australia or Scotland. And, because this same connectivity also brought us ecommerce, all of these people are potential customers. Gone are the days when small businesses were brick-and-mortar outlets in towns and cities, maybe seeing two- or three-dozen people come and go a day. Today, everyone with a smartphone is a potential customer: they look at pictures on Instagram, order via the website, and pay via PayPal. If this sounds like a really young business model, that’s because it is. And Silverback’s website reflects that. It’s artfully done – full of white space and vibrant colours, very visual, with beautiful young people looking great in glasses. It’s very cool. It’s very much the kind of site you’d expect to find Millennials and Boomlets (the two youngest generations currently alive) browsing alongside social media feeds. I ask Matt, if he had any advice to give to some of those young people who maybe, like him, had the potential to turn something they’re passionate about into a business. He does: “Get to the start line.” He says, “By that, I mean it’s really easy to have an idea; the execution is the hard bit. No one will see all the work you’ve done to get there – it’s a pretty lonely existence. But, if you can get to the start line, you’ve probably done 50% of the work.” It took Matt eleven months to get to the start line. But now he’s there, he looks like the kind of guy who wins races.

BRUCE-IDE 2200 AUDIT ASSISTANT AT KPMG
What made you choose to work for KPMG? KPMG was my first choice. I was able to choose the professional qualification that I thought would best suit me, which put me in control of my career – this was very important to me. After attending an open day in the Guernsey office, I realised KPMG also had the best working environment. The firm strives to build close teams and encourages people to take part in social events. There is an active sports and social committee which holds at least one event every month. This creates the opportunity for people to mix with employees they wouldn’t necessarily work with on a day-to-day basis. What does your average day look like? There isn’t really an average day for me. Every day is different. I work with different teams most weeks and I work on different clients in different sectors. Some days I could be working on a private equity client and the next day I could be working on a retail client. This variety keeps the job exciting and means I am learning more and more each day. As a first year assistant, much of the work I do is around the financial statements, reviewing them and testing the numbers to ensure they are all accurate. What professional training do you undertake?
I am studying for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification, following a three-year course that gives me a globally-recognised accountancy qualification. Balancing study with work is challenging, but it will be worth the effort when I qualify. There are other qualifications that you can take if you decide ACCA isn’t the right one for you. KPMG offers support in choosing the right qualification and provided me with information about the different options at the various open evenings I attended and during my interviews. Where is your journey taking you? Ideally, once I have qualified I would like to stay with KPMG and go on secondment to the Cayman Islands. KPMG offers a range of secondments with different timeframes and locations. When I joined KPMG I was attracted by the opportunity to use the global network to gain international experience and enhance my career. A professional accountancy qualification opens so many doors, because every business needs an accountant! Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? I would say if you are dedicated to the job, you have enthusiasm and stamina then go for it! It’s an incredible achievement not only to qualify as an accountant but to qualify as an accountant with one of the world’s biggest accountancy firms. I have made friends along the way who are all going through the same experience as I am. Accountancy is an exciting career and although the hours can sometimes be tough, everyone around me is there to help and support me along the way.

CHAPMAN 1248 ASSISTANT ASSOCIATE AT DELOITTE
What made you choose to work for Deloitte? Deloitte are a ‘Big 4’ firm with a great reputation and I knew they could offer high quality training, making them a really good place for me to continue to learn and a great place to begin my career. As a Big 4 firm they have offices around the globe, which means they can offer the opportunity to travel around the world band experience different cultures. What does your average day look like? I am assigned as part of an audit team to client which I do tasks for, to help us verify that that their financial statements show an accurate representation of the business. At my stage in training, I am involved in undertaking testing in Excel and by carrying out work at client offices such as stock counts. You’ are not always stuck in the office and can meet people in different industries and gain an understanding of the work they do. What professional training do you undertake? I am working towards the ACCA qualification to become a qualified accountant. I study for this at BPP and I have so far completed 2 exams and have 12 to go. I go to classes with people working at different audit firms, as well as people working for any kind of business which offers this qualification to their finance team employees. Where is your journey taking you? At the moment my goal is to pass the next 12 exams and become a qualified accountant in a few years. Once I have done this I am hoping the qualification will enable me to travel and work in different parts of the world with/in different industries. I would like to meet and work with different people and continue to learn as I progress. what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? I would recommend undertaking work experience (such as through the Deloitte Summer Vacation Scheme) so that you know what to expect from audit or any line of work before you start. I found that those of my peer group who did work experience had a very clear understanding of their work during the first few months as they had already done real client work during their work experience. I think gaining work experience in the area also helped them with the significant transition from school into working in audit.

ACADEMY With recent success at the Guernsey Awards for Achievement, winning the Employer of the Year award, Sure is well-placed to talk about the development of employees. A key part of its award win, and a crucial element of the company’s long-term business plan, is the Sure Academy. Sure’s HR director Lucienne De La Mare outlines what the academy is and how it equips young islanders for long and successful careers in the local telecoms industry. What is the Sure Academy?
Case study Chris Sumner, an access network engineer, was one of the first students to take part in the Sure Academy. He spent six months in IP support, six months in store and one year in engineering as part of the initiative. Having completed the programme he now has a permanent role as a network engineer. “I’ve gained a wide variety of industry experience and practical training through the Sure Academy which has helped me to develop an exciting and challenging career. The Sure Academy is a fantastic opportunity to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where new technologies and designs are always emerging.”
Sure is committed to investing in the development of our employees to ensure that our company has qualified and experienced staff who can enjoy a lifelong career with us. The Sure Academy was launched in Guernsey in 2013 and is a two-year programme designed to give apprentices a unique and in-depth understanding of the business before they decide which area they want to specialise in. The Academy is split along engineering, finance and commercial streams and Sure enrols up to six students to the Academy annually. Since 2013, 14 students have been supported by the Academy and 80% of them are now permanent Sure employees. Why was it launched? The development of telecommunications skills and expertise in the local workforce is vital for us to ensure we have the talent to be able to operate, and continually innovate, our business here. Sure has an enviable record of mentoring and developing staff to take on senior roles and our belief is that, with the right training and support, local people can become business leaders. We identified a growing need for young, local staff to be specifically trained for what is a fast-moving industry. We need our staff to be at the forefront of developments within the telecoms sector and this requires a specialised training programme that equips them for life in a dynamic, technology-led company. Equally we have found that there are limited opportunities for young people seeking a career in technology and engineering. The Sure Academy was designed to help overcome both of these challenges by offering young islanders the opportunity to develop their technological and business skills. The Sure Academy’s aim is to find talented and enthusiastic young islanders and give them the experience, skills and qualifications necessary to excel in whatever area of the business they choose to specialise in and ultimately become the telecommunications professionals of the future. With their expertise Sure can constantly improve the offerings and service we provide to our customers, and make the business a success. Anyone interested in applying to the Sure Academy scheme should email recruitment@sure.com with their CV. #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE

Redefining success in the millennial generation
BUSINESS / FEATURE
Our personal definitions of success have changed over recent years and are in fact, ever changing. What I once deemed successful at 13 years old was very different to what I thought about the whole ‘shebang’ in my later teenage years. And that’s a far cry from how I feel now at 26. As a millennial woman now well into my mid-twenties, I’ve recently re-evaluated the direction of my life and it’s got me thinking about this trending topic of success. How do we define it? Should it be defined? Should we care? Those in my generation have always been told we can have it all. ‘Of course you can juggle being the CEO of your own company with a long-term relationship, have a handful of babies into your 40s (freeze your eggs if you want), travel the world, have hair like Kate Middleton, practice yoga on a daily basis and eat ‘clean’ – all while buying a flat in central London, looking after your first pet and maintaining a thigh gap (really?). You want to know what I think? Let’s all stop striving for this socially conditioned prerequisite of success which seems to suggest that if we can’t do it all – we’ve failed miserably. It’s burning us out people! So many of my friends who work in London arrive at their office cubicles at 7am and don’t leave until 9pm – which is ‘early’ one told me last night. ‘But don’t worry’, they quickly assured me ‘I’m now off for work drinks’. Since when did life become so… hectic? We’re addicted to being busy and even more obsessed with checking in with the world on our phones. I am guilty of this too, but I am really trying to be better. When I was on my honeymoon, my husband Dave and I locked our phones in our hotel room safe. It was… weird at first. But by the time we arrived back at Guernsey airport, we didn’t even want to turn them back on. It was nice to drown out the background chatter for a while. When we returned from New Zealand, people were constantly asking me ‘how’s the job hunt going?’ - to which I replied ‘hunting’s going ok’. It was as if I was some reluctant Amazonian seeking my latest kill with a less than enthusiastic manner. I had job offers – but none of it sat right in my gut. It didn’t feel right and I would wake up in the night thinking –
is this really what I want my life to be? I didn’t want to work for 40-50 hours a week in an office that smelt like an old egg mayonnaise sandwich, follow orders from a grumpy Sandra in HR or settle for a job that would just about pay for my half of the rent, my cosmopolitan obsession and petrol. I’ve worked in shiny offices in various locations across the world, but I’ve recently set up as a freelancer. It’s scary because I’m doing it alone and I am solely responsible for the income I make. Some people have said I’m mad. Maybe I am? But it makes me so happy to know that I am my own boss and I can work from my living room or a poolside in Mexico if I want.

We all know Einstein knew a thing or two, so maybe it’s time to listen to his words of wisdom once again about becoming people of ‘value’ rather than ‘success’. If you have a dream to do something you’ve always wanted to do – whether that’s setting up your own business or quitting your job to travel for a year, do it – before it’s too late. Let’s all stop trying to have it all and instead strive to have what we actually want. Increasing numbers of us are actually choosing to work remotely and in a way that ensures balance/flexibility. In fact, it’s becoming a global phenomenon of sorts. 60 percent of part-time remote workers in a PGI survey said that if they could, they would leave their current job for a full-time remote position at the same pay rate. Since I’ve embarked on this new path, friends have confessed that they’ve also been tempted to take the leap and start Words Jessamy Baldwin

their own business or go freelance. But they are held back, not only by fear of the unknown, but by the criticism of their peers who might deem their choice unwise or unsuccessful. In the madness of striving for ‘success’, think about what you actually want from life. It’s never too late to change direction or jump on a different train. I know for some, striving for prestige and promotions in a well-known company is what makes them tick and that’s fine too – if it’s what genuinely makes you happy. For me, I’ve always desired freedom. I started a blog back in 2013 called ‘Be Free’ and I think it speaks to the fact that I’ve always wanted autonomy before prestige. And in fact, when you’re doing something you’re passionate about, kudos often comes naturally from being brave enough to start something new. We are Generation AON (All or Nothing). Up at 5am for spinning, avocado on toast, morning meetings, lunch date, presentation to client, after work cocktails, into bed at 2am. Or, Netflix and chill. It’s like we’re on a yoyo life diet and maybe what we all need is a little more balance in each day. Our generation is educated, driven and brought up to believe that to have it all, we must do it all. Our teachers, parents and even Oprah have told us, with the best intentions, to sprint towards corporate life, to compete with others and, with ourselves. Maybe it’s time to start redefining success?

Cars and Coffee is a global brand that put events on around the world for super cars and their owners. Despite the weather all 21 cars that registered turned up. With an array of Ferraris, Porches, Lamborghinis and many more exotic cars, the seen at the Fermain Valley hotel was breath taking for any car enthusiast. presented by the Fermain Valley Tea Rooms. After learning about the chosen charity (Guernsey Welfare Service) and how the money raised from the event would be used, members got back into their driving seats and started their drive into town. The event had been advertised on the Cars and Coffee Channel Islands Facebook page and over a thousand spectators had registered. As the drivers approached the bottom of the Val des Terres they were delighted, encouraged and surprised to see so many spectators braving the bad weather for a chance to see the supercars drive pass. Due to the amount of spectators it was decided that the cars would park on the Albert pier to allow for the spectators to get a little closer. Event organisers Kirsty and Jack Falla were #12. Director and Head of Operations RBC Wealth Management
RBC has been in Guernsey for 44 years and employs 180 staff locally. Royal Bank of Canada is Canada’s largest bank, and one of the largest banks in the world, based on market capitalization and employs over 80,000 full and part time staff. RBC helps communities prosper, supporting a broad range of community initiatives through donations, community investments and employee volunteer activities. For more information, please visiwww.rbc.com What is it like to work for you? There are two angles to this question. From a personal perspective, I don’t really like to think of people working for me, I like to think that people work with me. Regardless of the roles people have in the organization, everyone should be treated on an equal footing. From an RBC point of view it’s a fantastic company to work for. We have great values, commitment to the staff and the local community.
the one I find the most valuable is respect. Respect for each other, the communities in which we work and for other people’s opinions and ideas. How does your company contribute to island life? RBC and its staff support many local charitable, educational and environmental events. In Guernsey, we are the primary sponsor for the Harbour Carnival where we see a great participation from our staff. We also support the Grammar School sixth form with their team building day. The values of the school align very closely with our own - accountability, team work, diversity and inclusion. Last year, we also awarded our first Young Leaders bursary to an A Level student from Elizabeth College. We are supporting him through his Geology studies at Oxford University.
What do you as a company stand for?
How do you ensure your employees are happy?

the year, ranging from quiz nights to go-kart racing. We also have an annual employee opinion survey which helps us gauge how we are doing as an employer and identifies areas that our staff want us to focus on over the coming year. What was your best personal mistake? All of them. We learn from our mistakes, therefore I must be a very wise man indeed! As an island what should we do more of? My personal view is we need to make decisions and implement them. As an island we spend too much time deliberating and doing u-turns, which in the end is detrimental to us all. What makes you love Guernsey? Apart from the point above, I love everything the sea especially. It’s an amazing place to live, work and raise a family.

Taking place on 25 April, Wayne Atkinson and Gareth Bell from Collas Crill will be presenting at the half day conference alongside leading barrister Philip Marshal QC from Serle Court and insurance and professional negligence specialist Paul Lewis from Herbert Smith Freehills LLP on what directors of financial services businesses need to know and do in the modern regulatory era. “One of the Bar’s most successful silks”, Philip Marshall QC is a senior commercial and chancery silk who specialises in complex commercial disputes including those with a focus on company and insolvency law. He will be examining key points from the different cases he's seen including Shlosberg v Avonwick Holdings, Carlyle Capital v Conway, Re Lehman Brothers Ltd and ISIS Investments v McHarrie. Paul Lewis is the head of the contentious insurance group at Herbert Smith Freehills. He advises on all types of insurance products but has a particular expertise in directors and officers insurance. Paul will provide an insight into issues he has seen regularly arise in both the placement of D&O insurance and when trying to access the cover following a claim. He will also look at the changes the Insurance Act 2015 brought in and what benefits this has brought in for directors. Wayne said: "This event will really benefit local institutional directors and NEDs, highlighting the value of pro-active risk mitigation and management." The seminar will take place at the Duke of Richmond from 2pm until 5pm. Tickets are £80.
Saffery Champness Registered Fiduciaries in Guernsey appears twice on the shortlist for the 2017 Citywealth Magic Circle Awards. The firm has been shortlisted for the ‘Trust Company of the Year Institutional’ award while director Lisa Vizia has been nominated for ‘Trustee of the Year’. The Magic Circle Awards, now in its 12th year and organised by the UK-based publisher of wealth-management industry news and directories Citywealth, brings together a top level group of elite advisers and managers in the international wealth industry. Saffery Champness, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in Guernsey this year, won the ‘Trust Company of the Year Institutional’ category at the 2016 Citywealth Magic Circle Awards. Miss Vizia, who was shortlisted for the ‘Trustee of the Year’ award last year, said: “I am honoured to be a finalist alongside other leading private client professionals. Regardless of the result, I'm thrilled to have been shortlisted twice for such a prestigious award and am looking forward to the awards ceremony.” Entries for each category were shortlisted by a judging panel featuring 10 global industry experts. Their deliberations make up 90% of the vote with the remaining 10% from online voting. Managing director of Saffery Champness, Nick Batiste, said: “Being shortlisted again for this award acknowledges the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of our team.
"The range of potential issues directors are faced with seems to broaden every day. With financial and reputational damage always a threat, it's hugely important that directors continually remind themselves of how to mitigate risks to both their companies and themselves. We're here to provide advice on what it is they need to do and the pitfalls they can avoid," Wayne said.
“I am especially pleased to see that Lisa has once again been shortlisted in the prestigious Trustee of the Year category, it is a testament to her high standard of bespoke client service and her commitment to our business.” Voting for this year’s Citywealth Magic Circle Awards closes on 21 April. https:// www.citywealthmag.com/events/magiccircle-awards-2017 The awards ceremony will take place on 10 May in London.
Gareth, a partner in Collas Crill's dispute resolution practice who specialises in complex financial services litigation, will be discussing recent case law involving claims against directors. Gareth has been acting for the non-executive directors of Carlyle Capital Corporation Limited (the largest piece of litigation ever in Guernsey) for the past seven years, including a six month trial in 2016, and is known for his detailed knowledge of directors' duties and bringing and defending claims against directors.
This announcement comes a week after Saffery Champness was shortlisted for the independent trust company of the year award at the 2017 WealthBriefing European Awards. Saffery Champness also secured the bronze award in the ‘Company of the Year: Female Leadership (Professional Services)’ category and director Lisa Vizia received the silver award in the ‘Woman of the Year: Business Growth (Professional Services)’ category in the 2017 Citywealth Power Women Awards.
"When examining case law, it's easy to focus on the negatives. We want to use these lessons in a positive way, to educate rather than scare anyone off," Gareth said. #13. APRIL 2017. THE SUCCEED ISSUE

Ben said: "The Qualified Practitioner route was a great opportunity to add depth to my existing understanding and practice. The TEP designation is a widely regarded global mark for those working in the field, and STEP membership provides access to a global network of highly respected professionals with whom to share knowledge and information." STEP is a professional body that provides education, training, representation and networking for its members who are professionals specialising in trusts and/ or estates, executorships, will writing, administration and related taxation issues. Full members of STEP are often the most experienced and senior practitioners in the field of trusts and estates, in particular in relation to domestic and offshore trusts, trust and estate litigation, estates and succession and tax planning. The firm also saw marketing & digital manager, Jessica Hobbs, obtain her Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing. The course is run through the Professional Academy in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Accredited by the European Marketing Confederation, it is made up of two compulsory modules and one optional module designed to help marketers meet the increasing demands of them at every stage in their career. Jessica said: "The course looked at the
marketing function in depth, from internal and external communication methods to understanding the client experience in order to deliver a consistent message. "At Collas Crill, our brand and the delivery of our key messages plays a huge role in our overall strategy. The course reiterated the practical ways in which we should be listening to our clients to make sure our core values are consistent with what they say about us."

Invest with Sam The recipe for successful investing Success, or rather the ability to measure success, is an interesting and complex topic. As part of our ongoing research process, we meet a substantial number of fund managers. Unsurprisingly, we rarely encounter a manager who doesn’t believe their strategy is (or at least will be) successful. If, for a moment, we simplify things and interpret success as meaning “marketbeating” (of course, in reality, this is a drastic oversimplification) then, by the very nature of what an average infers, not every manager can be deemed “successful”. We can conclude two things from this concept; either some of the managers are lying (perhaps), or they are defining their own measure of success. The latter could vary significantly from both an investor’s interpretation and also that of the manager’s peers. Simply put, success is subjective. For us, the best way to overcome this is to distinguish between those managers that are genuinely skilful and those that have simply been lucky. Good Process Good Luck
Bad Process Good Luck
Good Process Rotten Luck
Bad Process Rotten Luck
For obvious reasons, we like to refer to the above image as the Battenberg chart. It is fairly obvious to most people that you want to avoid the bottom right quadrant - those managers with a bad process and rotten luck (although, for a manager with a fundamentally flawed process, you can seriously question how much bad luck actually comes into play)! Equally, those managers in the top left quadrant seem like an obvious buy.
SAM CORBET, Ravenscroft Investment Management It’s normally the “50:50” boxes that present investors with some problems. Human biases, primarily our obsession with past performance, usually prevent us from choosing managers in the bottom left quadrant. This is unfortunate as, theoretically, these managers are just as likely to make it into the top left hand box as those currently there. As a result, these managers have the attributes required to deliver superior investment returns over the longer-term. Regrettably, the same cannot be said for choosing those managers with a bad process who have, historically, had good luck. On the face of it, when you take historical performance at face value, these managers can appear very similar to those with a good process. The key difference here is that eventually, their luck will run out and you can quickly find yourself in a situation where your portfolio is significantly underperforming over the long term. These managers bring meaning to the motto “success is simply a matter of luck - ask any failure” - as brilliantly coined by Red Sox baseball player Earl Wilson. They should be avoided at all costs! Any reader who has had even the shortest encounter with the investment industry will have no doubt come across the disclaimer that “past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results”. As we have shown above, this is an extremely important point but one that often blindsides investors. In hindsight, we all make fantastic investors, however it is important to remember that you cannot buy historic performance (as much as you might like to). That being said, in the absence of any crystal ball, we cannot ignore past performance entirely. However, the emphasis should be firmly placed on
the manager’s ability to continue to deliver enhanced returns through an immaculately designed (and repeatable) investment process. Whilst the space permitted is barely enough to scratch the surface on the characteristics that define a solid investment process (keep your eyes peeled for a follow-up article!), there are a couple of simple rules that can be applied in order to establish which managers that should be immediately avoided. Firstly, we cannot underplay the importance of knowing what you own – if you do not understand the assets a manager is buying, or why, walk away. Part of good investment practice involves periodically reviewing your holdings to ensure they are performing in line with both the goals defined by the manager and your own expectations. You cannot possibly remain objective if you are relying on that same manager to tell you how the assets should be performing. The second point requires no further explanation (like all of the best statements) and serves as an appropriate conclusion – always remember that if something sounds too good to be true it generally is. After joining forces with digital agency Blix, TPA required a larger headquarters to house their growing team of designers, developers, marketers and account executives. CEO Tony Tostevin teamed up with Architect Dave De La Mare to design a stylish and functional office space for their diverse team to thrive in. The agency has 2,500 square foot of space, with polished concrete effect floors, retro 1970s pendants from Czechoslovakia and railway signal lights salvaged from Hungary. There is a functional ‘breakout’ zone for the team to turn to for games of pool, table tennis or FIFA, giving the office a refreshing approach to a work space, with a respectful distance between work and play. Founded in 1989, TPA is a multimedia advertising and marketing agency.
