The sunny morning stroll to work overlooking the sea of boats at Havelet compared to walking through the busy streets of London bumping shoulders with sweaty strangers… I know which one I would choose. The short car journey to work, compared to the hot muggy London tube... again for me a no brainier. Living away from Guernsey for nearly four years made me realise how these small yet important little things about our island make it a place like no other. The constantly supply of golden sandy beaches that are never crowded, always clean and never far away means there is always time for a lunchtime dip or better still a spot of sun worshipping Our relaxed evenings out with friends and even the safety of going out alone makes it perfect for any age but most importantly, you can be anywhere within a 25 minute drive or bus trip. We all compare our island and our lives here to other places in the world, but I’m sure you’ll all agree with me when I say that the grass is not always greener on the other side In this month’s edition we look at different photographers taking part in the Guernsey Photography Festival, we give a GSYLife reader a beautiful makeover, we talk high street vs designer and tea vs coffee. Guernsey really is a little paradise when the sun is shining, but also when it’s not.

hexagonal tiles perhaps, or the amazing ceiling with its funky trompe l’oeil wallpaper and looped industrial lighting. The seating, in suede and sumptuous fabrics, is really comfortable and there are plenty of nods to the building’s equestrian past, including a picture of Copenhagen’s gravestone (he was buried with full military honours at the Duke’s Hampshire residence). Even the restaurant’s logo incorporates a stylised saddle. The open kitchen allows you to see the chefs hard at work, and all the new equipment is the latest in energy efficiency. Gennaro, who comes from Naples but started working at the Hotel de Havelet in 1997, is proud to show us the interesting menu. ‘To tie in with the name and the Scandi look we have some Danish touches, like the Smörgåsbord and Copenhagen sausages which have Danish seasoning but are produced locally,’ he says. The menu has a laidback feel, with grazing plates – the crab melts are a highlight – and sharing platters. Paella is popular here, with four choices, all for two or more to share and made with proper Bomba rice and saffron. À la carte options include rack of lamb, Chef’s Fish Quay Choice and a full steak board. exclusively created by Aperitif, such as 15 Hands and Lion’s Knoll, which has rumflake tobacco syrup and cherry bitters in it. Look out for the special cocktails, which change with the seasons. If it’s too early for cocktails, how about afternoon tea, available from 2.00-5.30pm? There’s a lovely selection of finger sandwiches, scones with fresh Guernsey cream (of course) and miniature cakes. And it’s never too early to add a glass of Prosecco, especially if the sun is shining and you can sit out on the terrace. If you’re planning a celebration or corporate function, Copenhagen has a great events menu which features little pots of the à la carte dishes – ideal if you want to socialise with everyone instead of being confined to your seat. ‘The pots are priced individually so you can formulate your own menu and choose as many dishes as you want,’ explains Gennaro. ‘‘It’s a new thing for Guernsey, with our open kitchen making a real feature. We’ve been really busy ever since we opened and Copenhagen is proving to be popular with locals and guests of the hotel.’’ - Gennaro, General Manager. A TOUCH OF DIFFERENCE Touch rugby is one of Guernsey’s fastest growing sports and in a decade, it has gone from a handful of people playing socially to more than 200 players taking part in mixed, men’s, ladies, corporate and youth leagues. But how does it compare to other sports and is that the secret of its success? ‘The main differences are that it’s a mixed team sport and it’s very inclusive so you don’t need lots of equipment and providing you can run forwards and backwards and catch a ball then you can play touch,’ said Guernsey Touch chair Ollie Ward.

and added a youth league which is open to players from 11 upwards. Both those initiatives have led to more people becoming involved,’ said Ollie. As a summer sport, touch has attracted a considerable following from the winter sports and a number of rugby, hockey and football players become involved to maintain their fitness. How do they think it compares? Words Katrina Bray Photography Laura Middleton

‘We have men’s and ladies divisions but all of those players will also play in the mixed, corporate or youth leagues. So what you have are friends, siblings, couples, parents and children, even whole families playing in the same team. I’m not sure any other sport offers that.’

Tea Vs Coffe

Tea has always been a personal beverage. It is considered an not to ask someone how strong they’d like it, and don’t even get people who put the milk in first! Whilst this may seem quite a dram towards the simple process of dunking a tea bag into boiling wa aren’t the only ones who will defend its honour with a fervent ceremonies are a traditional form of social interaction in many A such as Japan and Tibet. For the Western world, we also hig friendships made over a well-made brew.

However, a novel breed of caffeine drinkers has surfaced am bring about the ultimate debate: Tea vs Coffee. As tea is deeme refreshment, coffee can be the source of inspiration for roman design. Not to mention, a decent dose is sometimes all you ne you for the day. Both are so integrated into our heritage that not without hearing one phrase or the other: “Fancy a cuppa?” or “I coffee!”

Three years ago the sport underwent a transformation when KPMG agreed a three year sponsorship that allowed Guernsey Touch to sign a lease to make KGV their permanent home. ‘Moving to KGV has allowed us to put in place plans that we had only been able to talk about as we didn’t have a venue that was big enough. Since then, we have introduced a corporate league

Whichever it is you say most often is easily applied to your pe drinkers love all things cosy and you rarely find one without other hand, whereas coffee lovers tend to be the more indulg the European tourists wearing leather jackets to be precise. Th so impossible to be both? There are many who live the double pumped-conqueror by day and scraping-digestive-crumbs-o by night, so it is not too shocking to come across someone who stereotype.

It is nigh time we accepted that neither argument can win. The mutually engulfed in our culture and stomach acid but this will prevent the dispute from topping boiling point. So in the interes pot, the question is posed to you. Which is better: tea or coffee?

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

‘LEMON’

Creating the perfect image, with Amie Garnett. Over the past couple of months I have been working hard with my model Jessie Child to create a look that would compete with the very best stylists at the national L’Oreal trophy awards. The inspiration behind the haircut was vintage Chanel and Pulp Fiction. I love the classical shapes and fabrics used by Chanel, and the iconic black square bob hair style of Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction. I tried my best to incorporate both into Jessie’s look. A tip is to know what your models defining features are so with Jessie I wanted a haircut that would be able show off her amazing jaw line. The colour of the hair can be a little bit trickier and you’ll need to pay close attention to the skin and eye colour of your model. Add in the clothes to compliment the style and colour of the hair you have chosen and you’ll be onto a winning combination. With all of the hard work I managed to win the south-west region of the L’Oreal trophy, earning my place in the final in London. For the next year all nine finalists will be a part of the L’Oreal Colour Academy, where I look forward to learning more about how to create the perfect image. IL BRUCE G

An Iconic street photographer with a unique style, Bruce Gilden was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He first went to Penn State University but he found his sociology courses too boring for his temperament and he quit college. Gilden briefly toyed with the idea of being an actor but in 1967, he decided to buy a camera and to become a photographer. Although he did attend some evening classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Bruce Gilden is to be considered substantially a selftaught photographer. Right from childhood, he has always been fascinated by the life on the streets and the complicated and fascinating motion it involves, and this was the spark that inspired his first long-term personal projects, photographing in Coney Island and then during the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Over the years he has produced long and detailed photographic projects in

The photographic style of Bruce Gilden is defined by the dynamic accent of his pictures, his special graphic qualities, and his original and direct manner of shooting the faces of passers-by with a flash. Gilden’s powerful images in black and white and now in color have brought the Magnum photographer worldwide fame. Gilden has received many awards and grants for his work, including National Endowments for the Arts fellowships (1980, 1984 and 1992), French “Villa Medicis Hors les Murs” grant (1995), grants from the New York State Foundation for the Arts ( 1979, 1992 and 2000), a Japan Foundation Artist Fellowship (1999) and in 2013 a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship. Bruce Gilden has published 15 monographs of his work, among them: Facing New York, 1992; Bleus, 1994; Haiti, 1996 (European Publishers Award for Photography); After The Off, 1999; Go, 2000; Coney Island, 2002; A Beautiful Catastrophe, 2004; Foreclosures, 2013; A complete Examination of Middlesex, 2014. In 2015, Gilden published Face, and Hey Mister Throw Me Some Beads! His new book Un Nouveau Regard Sur la Mobilité Urbaine featuring the commission he did for the French transporation system RATP was released in April 2016.

asphyxiating planet. While working as an artist I have also taught photography and fine art parttime, for thirty years. I see teaching as an integral part of my work. When I have exhibitions in public spaces I undertake workshops with different age groups who often have had no previous experience of combining imagery as a way of personal expression. A society based on image saturation creates a feeling of disempowerment. I have experienced, through leading many workshops, especially with young people, how empowering it is for them to take images from their everyday life and combine them with images from the wider society.

ARD N N E K R E PET Since the 1970s I have been committed to making photomontage and mixed media work that deals with social, political and environmental conditions. I have tried to visualise the production and consumption of power. In earlier work it was mainly military and political power, more recently it is the impact and unsustainability of fossil fuels and growing industrial pollution.

Working with the general public as well as photography and fine art students I have witnessed people make socially critical connections through the constructive fluidity of photomontage and assemblage. Using scissors and paste, Photoshop, everyday detritus or their combination, there is a growing need to visualise the urgency of everyday experience. It is important for artists to act as early warning systems, be the canary down the mine, imagining through images the end result of the direction in which we are heading and to picture people struggling to find another way. I attempt to do this through my teaching and my work.

I have tried through the use of photomontage to argue that the attempt of the few to dominate the majority and exploit global resources has led to wars and systemic crises of the economy and the environment. I aim to reach a global non-specialist audience through dissemination of my work via exhibitions, books, street posters, newspapers, postcards and the internet. I work independently, but I see my work as a visual counterpart to the global struggles against social and environmental exploitation. I therefore encourage my work to be used by organisations that campaign on issues, including human rights (Amnesty), nuclear weapons (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) and the environment (Greenpeace). Through the use of photomontage I try and connect single clicks of the camera shutter to create a visual language that can be understood globally. Two clicks of the camera shutter can be brought together to create a third meaning that exposes cause and effect. Breaking down elements in photographs, cutting them up and reconstituting them allows a critical narrative of opposing forces to be presented visually. This encourages the viewer to think critically about the consequences of our actions on the

AND

I have been a photographer for over 20 years. I have had several exhibitions around the world.I have published two books. The Brothers (2011) and Brother I Sister (2015). Both books are published by www.dewilewis.com in the UK.Both of these projects are set in rural Norway. The last years I have concentrated my photography on portraying people and their belongings in their homes.I seek to recall and interact with my own sensation of being in these places in the moments before they (often) disappear. To me it is a gift to be present in peoples lives, and share some moments of time. I want to make the invisible visible. I am deeply fascinated by the ordinary. The unposed. The details of everyday moments.

How does it work: Take part with a digital camera or high quality mobile phone or any other digital device. All images must be uploaded to our website. Topics will be released every 2 hours at new location each time. Entrants must make it back to the finish location before the 6 hours is up! Who can enter: Open to everyone including families and children - everyone can be a photographer for the day! £10 for adults, £5 for under 16’s. Lots of prizes to be one and the chance to see you work projected on big screens. Find out more on social media or email us hello@guernseyphotographyfestival.com or sign up today at eventbrite.com. L IFE'S A BEACH! They said we were daft. They were right. It began with a simple question. Is it possible to swim at every Guernsey beach in one day? When talking to other people, this would generally be followed by a more difficult question: what would be the point of swimming at every Guernsey beach in one day? Cheerfully ignoring the second of those, we gathered a handful of our closest/most idiotic friends and began planning the task. And quite a task it was. Guernsey, after all, has twenty-nine beaches. Growing up in the island we’d gotten to know them all inside out, playing bat and ball on every sliver of sand, wallowing in every shallow, fishing frisbees from every rock pool. But all in one day? It seemed a tall order. The west coast would be easy – the beaches run one after another, all with car parks and straightforward access points. But many in the south and east entail long, demanding cliff path scrambles, down hundreds of winding steps and then, heartbreakingly, back up again. Getting ready for this challenge wouldn’t be a cakewalk. It would need a rigorous fitness regime. Stretches, pressups, sprinting drills. It would be a long road. One day later, we figured we were probably ready. Starting out at Fermain at 7am with fresh faces and ill-advised croissants, we headed south past Marble Bay and Divette to Petit Port, then on to Moulin Huet, Saints and Le Jaonnet, six hours all told on the south coast. The sun was warm, the sea flat like a blue sheet of glass. Seagulls swooped up and down the cliffs, where purple wildflowers stirred in a gentle breeze. Guernsey was showing off. Halfway up the west coast the weather took a turn, slate-grey clouds ghosting in overhead, but our resolve never dimmed (or at least, that’s what we said afterwards). Beach, car, beach, car, beach. Cobo, Port Soif, Les Amarreurs. Chouet, Pembroke, Bordeaux. Sand prickled our shins; water sloshed in footwells. And as the sun went down and the first spots of rain spattered Castle Cornet, we arrived at Havelet, sunburnt and irritable, flinging ourselves into the sea for the last time and then staggering back up the slipway to a heroes’ welcome. Or at least, a sopping wet towel and some pigeons,

and somebody’s mum with a cup of tea. Afterwards, an idea took shape. A daft challenge it may have been, but we’d pulled it off. And, like going on Strictly or having a Twitter account, one of the advantages of a daft challenge is that there’s bound to be a book in it. Having acquired all this knowledge, why not write it all down? What sets each beach apart; which ones are best at low tide, which ones at high; what’s so great about the south coast? So write it down we did. It took us more than two years (when the ‘research’ involves ice cream and sunbathing, you can never be too thorough) but at last we had a manuscript. We recruited a photographer – the magnificent Chris Tostevin-Hall – and our friends Ollie Mcvey and Nick Robinson hammered out the design. At the end of it all we had a book. The Guernsey Beach Guide was published in December 2014. As well as a comprehensive guide to the

beaches, it’s intended as an entertaining read for locals, with little nuggets of Guernsey history scattered through the pages. To date we’ve sold over 1500 copies. A sample of the ecstatic reviews: − ‘Surprisingly good’ − ‘I didn’t think you had it in you’ − ‘I still can’t believe you guys wrote this’ For summer 2016 we’ve completed a major redesign of our website (guernseybeachguide.com). As well as placing your order, you can see all the photos we’ve taken around our beautiful island, and link through to tide tables and surf reports. We hope the book will take you all around the coast, bringing you to places you might not normally go. Because while you don’t have to do them all in one day, you should try to get to all of Guernsey’s beaches at some point. There’s so much exploring to do.

Bayleigh Holberry represented Vauvert Primary and used a variety of materials including string, wallpaper and cardboard to create textures within their prints, which featured moths and butterflies, robots and birds. Zack said it had been really good fun while Bayleigh said it made him want to be an artist when he grew up. ‘It was a good experience and a good skill to know,’ said Fionnbarr. Katy Sandrey, Ravenscroft’s group head of marketing and PR, said the prints were beautiful. ‘The Gate House Gallery does an excellent job inspiring and educating the island’s young people and Ravenscroft is very pleased to be able to contribute. These youngsters have created some wonderful work and I’m sure it will look fantastic in the exhibition.’ The Gate House Gallery, which is located at the entrance to Elizabeth College, was established to provide opportunities for students to show their work, bring artists and designers to the Island to work with local school children through an ‘artists in residence’ programme and to build links with the wider arts community.

BUTTERFIELD STAFF WALK TO BERMUDA AND BACK MORE THAN TWICE Staff from Butterfield walked all the way to Bermuda and back – more than twice. During National Walking Month the bank challenged its staff to cover as a group the 3,349 miles between Guernsey and their Bermudan colleagues’ offices across in the mid Atlantic. 28 teams of four smashed the target by covering a massive 18,196 miles. The winning team was Trotters Independent Traders, comprising Charlie de Nobrega, Nigel Garrard, Liz Kimber and Tom Swain. They covered a distance of 1261.03 miles and will each receive an extra day’s holiday. Jonathan Keys-Massey walked the furthest individually during the month, covering 528.6 miles; in one week alone he covered 140.3 miles. The bank rewarded him with a Fitbit activity wristband. Participants raised £112 through an entry

ARTWORK PRESENTED TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS Four primary schools have been presented with artwork created by pupils as part of a special art programme. Twelve Year 6 students from Amherst, Beechwood, Notre Dame and Vauvert were chosen to take part in a printmaking project, which took place over four weekends in March. The project was part of the Gate House Gallery’s Visiting Artist Programme, which is made possible through sponsorship from Ravenscroft. Elizabeth College head of creative arts, Adam Stephens, managed the project, alongside art technician Louise Stephens and Caroline Cummins, who owns her own design business in Guernsey. The finished art will be on show at the gallery on Friday 24th June from 6.30pm – 8.30pm and will remain on display for two weeks. Prints from each school’s pupils have also been framed and presented to the heads as a permanent memento. Zack Carre, Fionnbarr Conolon and

GEOMARINE WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR HANOIS LIGHTHOUSE WORK Geomarine has won a prestigious civil engineering award for work it carried out on the Hanois Lighthouse. The Guernsey company, which is part of the Garenne Group, took the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West award for the best project under £1m. The Hanois Lighthouse project saw the repair and stabilisation of the boat landing steps at the lighthouse, in an extremely exposed offshore location, with difficult access in a tidal range of up to 10m. The team working on the project had to live and work in very challenging conditions. Geomarine worked with local consultant engineers, DLA, to design the repair work for the client, Trinity House. Ian Gilmour, CEO of Geomarine, said: ‘Hanois Lighthouse is an iconic local landmark, steeped in history and presenting a challenging working environment. It utilised all of Geomarine’s expertise and was an extremely satisfying project. It really seemed to strike a chord with the judges against some stiff opposition from major UK contractors, and we are thrilled to have won this award, especially as there were a record number of entries in the category this year.’ ICE South West covers a large geographical region and represents more than 6,000 members. The awards ceremony, which was held at National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, celebrated outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. The award was presented to the Geomarine team by Sir John Armitt CBE, president of the ICE. Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, said: ‘We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of so many local projects at our awards ceremony. Collectively, the winning projects are a real showcase of what civil engineering is all about; they include a flood protection scheme, bridge maintenance, new highway, helipad, lighthouse boat landing, cycle route construction, dam, service station and even a marine lake. This is far from an exhaustive list of what civil engineering is all about, but it gives a very good idea of how much it impacts upon everybody’s daily lives. I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the winning and highly commended projects; your work is a shining example of civil engineering at its best.’

KPMG SUMMER PARTY Where: The Beach House, Guernsey

The KPMG Summer Party, as always, was a great success! With a profusion of seasonal cocktails and Hawaiian-style garlands on offer, party goers were welcomed to the venue in style. The sounds of jazz filled the air and a mini cocktail bar kept everyone hydrated. With a number of culinary offerings to try, comprising moreish BBQ dishes and a hog roast, there was something for all, including ice cream for dessert! The perfect accompaniment to the balmy weather. Element 6 - a local cover band - took to the rooftop stage for the best part of the night, whilst the beach played host to an inferno exhibition of fire and glow performers. Guests who dared to master the art, were invited down to the bay to flame throw, whilst the audience watched on in suspense! To conclude this action-packed event, a DJ took to the stage and the dance floor was put to optimum use.

“Gay Pride was not born out of a need to celebrate being gay, but our right to exist without persecution.’’

WHATS HAPPENING! Friday 9th September Broadway evening with the X-factor’s Kitty Brucknell Liberate will be hosting a Broadway evening with the X factor’s Kitty Brucknell who was a massive success at The Exhibitionist Ball earlier this year. It aims to help LGBTQ islanders and their family and friends to feel proud of who they are, as well as feeling more accepted and valued within the wider community. The colourful Pride parade will wind its way from Candie Gardens, down Smith Street and onto the High Street where a 50-meter rainbow flag will be unfurled to lead the parade into Market Square. Market Square will be host to some of the islands’ most popular bands, along with a couple of surprise performances, including the UK’s best Dolly Parton tribute act! There will be a selection of stalls, along with entertainment for every age and plenty to eat and drink. The organisers will be working closely with the Guernsey Photography Festival who will be

engaging their internationally renowned photographers to document and capture this historic day. Their photographs will be livestreamed onto a big screen at the rear of the stage in Market Square. The extremely successful inaugural event in Jersey last year was attended by over 3,000 people. This year’s Pride celebrations will start in Guernsey and finish in Jersey the following weekend, with a week full of activities and events in both islands in-between; including the first ever Channel Islands Equality & Diversity awards. When Executive Chef Craig Jones opened The Cliff at Cap, the white tablecloth restaurant at Cap Maison, on St Lucia in October, 2008, he brought a lifetime of experience in some of the best kitchens in the world. His French West Indian inspired menu is offered in The Cliff at Cap’s dramatic setting, a bluff overlooking the crashing Caribbean Sea, with unobstructed views towards Martinique to the north and Pigeon Island to the West. Cap Maison and Chef Jones have been hailed by The New York Times and The Cliff at Cap is considered one of the most highly sought after tables on the island. But along with his rigorous training at Michelin-starred kitchens in Europe, the Welsh-born Chef Jones also brought a locavore’s passion to St Lucia, well before local sourcing became a fashionable buzz word. “I like working with small island farmers and the local fishermen, because obviously, that’s where it starts,” he says. “I love to take guests to the roadside markets and the Saturday market in Castries. The variety always surprises them, even the most sophisticated travellers who have grown accustomed to seeing exotic products in their upscale city markets. I can’t wait to sample Guernsey’s famous produce in September.”

With the Guernsey International Food Festival just around the corner, we catch up with the festival sponsors to discover how they benefit from supporting the event.

THE CHANNEL ISLAND CO-OPERATIVE

“The Guernsey International Food Festival will bring together the finest Channel Islands' produce alongside international cuisine of the highest standard. The Big Guernsey Market, Guernsey Restaurant Week, Beach BBQ Cook Off and the numerous live cookery demonstrations will all offer opportunities to showcase fantastic dishes from the islands and around the world. ‘As a passionate supporter of growers, farmers and producers, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society chose to support the festival as we believe it will celebrate the amazing range of top quality food and drink that can be found across the islands – something we are also proud to do. As a locally-owned business, we are committed to ensuring that we have a range of local products, which includes dairy, fruit, vegetables, salad, herbs, alcohol, coffee and bakery products, and last year alone, we paid £11m. to more than 40 local suppliers.” Greg Yeoman, chief marketing officer, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society.

This is why Condor Ferries are proud to sponsor the Guernsey Food Festival.

FIRST CENTRAL GROUP “‘At FCG we promote and encourage the personal growth and development of our staff; we have a strong ‘wellbeing in the workplace’ policy which includes helping our staff make healthy eating choices. Wellbeing activities such as yoga or gardening are on offer to our team each month, our kitchen is constantly busy with staff using the office nutribullet and a token scheme with rewards is in place to encourage our employees to bike to work. Fantastic food can also be good for you and we aim to bring this wellbeing and healthy eating focus to the Guernsey International Food Festival, staff will be taking part in a five-minute healthy eating challenge and will blend delicious smoothies using their pedal power in the Big Guernsey Market.” Mike Leonard, Deputy Group CEO

mirrored others that I have attended in different countries, including the Cayman Islands, where we have another office also. As the company is full of self confessed foodies (and drinkies!), we immediately knew that if the opportunity arose to be able to sponsor the GIFF, we would jump at the chance. As such, we are delighted to be one of the main sponsors this year. By sponsoring and supporting local industry through GIFF, we are able to help in spreading the word of the amazing quality of local produce from land and sea together with Guernsey’s culinary heritage and great restaurant scene. The international chef exchange event, where Craig Jones from Cap Maison in St Lucia is visiting Guernsey and matching up with Simon McKenzie from the OGH (and vice versa in February next year) is particularly exciting as it really does give Guernsey as an island, and Simon as a chef, the forum to showcase how good the Guernsey food scene is. As an aside I have eaten at both restaurants, and without being Guernsey biased, I think Simon may show Craig from St Lucia a thing or two! So, whether it’s local beef from Jason Hamon at Red, local lobster at Octopus, or an artisanal Wheadon’s Gin at the Bella Luce, Guernsey and its food and drink matches up to the rest of the world, and we are proud to be able to help spread the word further.”

Copenhagen was the favourite horse of the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. This courageous stallion was ridden by the Duke during his greatest victory, the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. General Manager Gennaro Festivo explains the significance of the name to the Hotel de Havelet and its former coach house, where the Wellington Boot restaurant and now Copenhagen are housed: ‘We wanted a name that reflected the history of the house because the Duke of Wellington used to come and stay here when it was a private residence, owned by the Le Marchant family. Apparently the Duke had a liaison with Henrietta Le Marchant and would come and see her in the summer holidays.’ According to local legend the Duke even arranged for part of the coach house to be rebuilt before his paramour was hurriedly married off to a Captain de Courncey. Copenhagen Bar & Grill occupies the ground floor of the old coach house and it has been transformed inside and out. The exterior has been given a contemporary facelift and is now clad in dark timber and has the welcome addition of a beautiful terrace, complete with firepit and strings of light bulbs that give a magical feel when night falls. The view is spectacular from both the terrace and the bar, taking in St Peter Port, Castle Cornet and Havelet Bay. The interior of the new-look eaterie has a gorgeous, original design, with a cool Scandi vibe and lots of eclectic detailing. It’s hard to pick a favourite feature: the soft grey wooden flooring accentuated with patterned #07. AUG/SEPT 2016. THE COMPARE ISSUE.

hexagonal tiles perhaps, or the amazing ceiling with its funky trompe l’oeil wallpaper and looped industrial lighting. The Express Menu is great value, from £14.95 for two courses at lunchtime to £19.95 for three courses between 5.30 and 6.30pm. Copenhagen’s cocktail list features some fascinating options, including some

39

exclusively created by Aperitif, such as 15 Hands and Lion’s Knoll, which has rumflake tobacco syrup and cherry bitters in it. Straight from the horse’s mouth – make sure you book a table soon. To see all the menus go to restaurantcopenhagen.com, or book on 722199.

Tea Vs Coffee

Tea has always been a personal beverage. It is considered an insult by most not to ask someone how strong they’d like it, and don’t even get me started on people who put the milk in first! Whilst this may seem quite a dramatic approach towards the simple process of dunking a tea bag into boiling water, the British aren’t the only ones who will defend its honour with a fervent reverence. Tea ceremonies are a traditional form of social interaction in many Asian countries such as Japan and Tibet. For the Western world, we also highly value the friendships made over a well-made brew. However, a novel breed of caffeine drinkers has surfaced among society to bring about the ultimate debate: Tea vs Coffee. As tea is deemed the homelier refreshment, coffee can be the source of inspiration for romance, travel and design. Not to mention, a decent dose is sometimes all you need to energise you for the day. Both are so integrated into our heritage that not a day goes by without hearing one phrase or the other: “Fancy a cuppa?” or “I’m dying for a coffee!” Whichever it is you say most often is easily applied to your personality. Teadrinkers love all things cosy and you rarely find one without a book in the other hand, whereas coffee lovers tend to be the more indulgent charactersthe European tourists wearing leather jackets to be precise. Then again, is it so impossible to be both? There are many who live the double life of caffeinepumped-conqueror by day and scraping-digestive-crumbs-out-of-a-blanket by night, so it is not too shocking to come across someone who befits neither stereotype. It is nigh time we accepted that neither argument can win. The beverages are mutually engulfed in our culture and stomach acid but this will, of course, not prevent the dispute from topping boiling point. So in the interest of stirring the pot, the question is posed to you.

TASTY

TAPENADE Forget the deli counter at the supermarket – Tapenade Delicatessen offers a whole lot more. GSY Life finds out why we should support this lovely local business. Nestled between the Ship & Crown pub and interior design shop No 4 is Tapenade Delicatessen – look out for the charming old-fashioned bicycle parked outside. Octavia Lord took over the business in February 2015 and she was joined earlier this year by Tim Smart. Together they have transformed this eclectic little shop bursting with edible delights. Both Octavia and Tim are foodies who put great service at the heart of their business. ‘We’re both ex-Specsavers so we’re passionate about customer service,’ says Tim. ‘We wanted to run a deli where people can browse and talk to someone who knows all about the products.’ Not only can you get expert advice, but you can also try before you buy. Intrigued by the sound of Gjetost, a Norwegian caramel cheese, but not sure whether you’ll like it? No problem when a sample will allow you to discover for yourself that it’s a delicious and unusual addition to any cheeseboard. With an interesting selection of cheese, charcuterie, olives and relishes, you can put together an impressive spread without spending a fortune. ‘Our products are the best quality we can find, without ridiculously high prices,’ assures Tim. ‘Freshly sliced meat from the charcuterie counter is great quality, you just buy what you need and the price is on a par with pre-packed supermarket meats,’ adds Octavia. They are proud to showcase local produce, so a section of the deli counter is reserved for Guernsey fare and around the shop you’ll find local heroes like Haut Maison liqueurs, Bean 14 coffee and Caragh Chocolates from Sark. You can buy freshly baked bread and homemade pastries, sausage rolls and quiches – or why not go for the Sandwich of the Week? All so much nicer than cellophane-wrapped sandwiches, and you can even sit at one of the window seats to eat your lunch while you watch the world go by. Tapenade has an array of blackboards to keep you informed of their specials

and fantastic deals; how about a platter for two with cheese, meats, olives, a rustic baguette and a bottle of wine for £14.99? Or there’s a pizza, salad and wine deal for a pound more, and the pizzas are in a different league from anything you’ll find in the freezer cabinet. One of the main reasons to go to Tapenade is to pick up one of their amazing hampers: choose one that has already been assembled or go bespoke with whatever you fancy. The sky’s the limit: if you’re really feeling flush they will get hold of caviar, Champagne and truffles, but you’ll be spoilt for choice with what you see on the shelves. Whether you go for a cardboard hamper or beautiful wicker, you can rely on Tapenade to produce a gift you’ll be proud to give. And don’t worry about staggering to your car with your hamper: there’s an unloading bay just outside and free delivery is offered on orders over £60 (for orders under £60 there is a delivery charge of £5). Suggestions for filling your hamper – or just your shopping basket – include Adnams wines, beers and spirits from Southwold, Suffolk – their mini beer kegs are great for parties – Cup and Saucer teas and Jersey Black Butter. A new addition is a range from the Artisan Food Club, a cooperative of small, independent producers. There are plenty of non-food items too, like Molly Mac cards, goat’s milk soap, Guernsey mugs and kitchenware. Why not put together a hamper for a cheese lover, with a cheeseboard, chutney, crackers and – naturally – cheese? Guernsey would be sorely lacking in character without independent businesses like Tapenade, where you are assured a friendly welcome, good advice and products that are a little bit different. The coffee’s great too – what more could you want? Pop into the deli when you’re next in town and see for yourself why it leaves the supermarket in the shade. Order online at tapenadedeli.co.uk or visit the shop at 4 North Quay, St Peter Port. Words Caroline Mauger #07. AUG/SEPT 2016. THE COMPARE ISSUE.

TIPS TO

STAYING

FIT & HEALTHY ON HOLIDAY...

Holiday season is upon us and if you’re heading off-island this summer try not to unravel all your pre holiday prepping. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track whilst your away.

1 - Be Prepared: Just because you’re on holiday it doesn’t mean you stop exercising. Make sure to pack your trainers, workout wear, headphones, media armband and a decent play-list. Research your destination, if your hotel doesn’t have a gym look for local health clubs or studios that allow non members or offer drop in classes. If none of those options are available then do some yoga around the pool, download a mini workout plan you can do in your room and ask the hotel reception for a map and recommended running route. Don’t forget water, cap and sunblock.

2 - Travel: Aeroplanes are notorious environments for picking up bugs, so keep germs at bay and spray your plane seat and around you with Higher Nature’s High Stability Active Silver available from Amazon, also carry hand sanitiser wipes and pack some powdered high dosage Vitamin C to help boost your immune system to fight off in-flight nasties. Airline food can be pretty awful, don’t eat for the sake of it. Steer away from heavy meals and opt for salads, avoid alcohol and stay hydrated with water. Pack healthy protein bars, fruit and trail mixes to replace any salty inflight snacks. Once you’ve checked into your hotel

head to the sauna to sweat out any nasty germs that may be lingering.

3 - Diet: When booking your holiday check out healthy spots for lunch and choose recommended local dishes. At breakfast don’t fall at the first hurdle by ordering 3 times the amount you would normally eat. Try to eat clean and lean as much as possible. A healthy breakfast will give you energy, satisfy your appetite, and set the stage for smart decisions all day long. Whilst lounging around the pool snack on watermelon, not only does it taste amazing and is low in calories, it’s also packed full of electrolytes, anti-inflammatories, and contains I-citrulline which helps muscles to recover and lycopene to fight free radicals (molecules responsible for aging, tissue damage, and possibly some diseases). Plus the high water concentration will help you stay hydrated and keep you feeling full until lunchtime. Obviously you want to have fun whilst you’re away and for some that includes great wines and cocktails, just make sure to stay hydrated by alternating with water or non alcoholic beverages. Finally, whatever your up to this summer have a great time, stay active and eat well.

AGONY AUNT

Do you have an issue you want to get off your chest? Why not get in touch with our very own Agony Aunt, The BBC’s Jenny Kendall-Tobias.

Q: I live next to St Stephens Church and have amassed a collection of young to middle-aged people using the facilitates that the Church provides of a ‘Pokemon Go Gym’. They’re talking about ‘catching them all’ and ‘throwing their balls’ about. Are regular courting methods not ‘in’ anymore? Remember, it’s not what they do with their balls that counts, it’s how they throw them. A good aim helps too. And anyway, in the old days of the Helmsman pub, ‘catching them all’ used to be a local sport, so stop moaning. I think this is certainly a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’, but this advice should also come with a warning. If you’re going to throw your balls around the island in search of a nearby monster, head too far out West and you could encounter some rather feisty ones. Beware the ‘Torteval tache’ is all I’m saying at this juncture.

Q: I’m experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the Sark Folk Festival and it’s having negative effects on my life. Last night I woke up, needed the loo, walked outside and relieved myself over the hedge. What would you suggest? Relieving yourself over the hedge under cover of darkness is not the issue here. What is in question is your ability to empathise with lady festival-goers. We female folk lovers cannot simply make use of the nearest available earthy mound when the call of nature shouts – especially after three pints of Bec du Nez when the calling is at its loudest and most urgent. On the contrary - we are the behind-the-bush-goers and leafy cover has to be at its most verdant in order for us to perform in comfort. May I suggest you try asking The Mrs to accompany you during your next night-time micturation moment. Your seeing her struggling to secure a ‘Shewee’ will be enough to put you off going in the future either at home or at a festival for that matter. Failing that you could try licking a skillet on Rectory Hill, which works wonders apparently.

Q. My husband is infatuated with Heather Watson. Do I need to take up tennis? No. You need to take up grunting. Andy Murray has a distinctly Scottish lilt to his grunt. You will have to develop a grunt in Guernsey French. Think of emitting a gruff moan with your lips pursed, whilst pushing out an ‘eh’ sound with a large shunt from your diaphragm. Keep practising this highly successful technique when your husband is at work and then – and only then – think about hanging several sets of large white bloomers on the line. With your grunt and the merest suggestion of tennis undies atop your whirligig, your husband will start to believe he’s in the middle of Centre Court at Wimbledon. If this fails then simply channel the ethos of many a bored Guernsey housewife by standing in the garden and yelling at the top of your voice “new balls please” or “you’re out”!!

High Street DESIGNER

eaven. For some, you have to die before you get there. For others, its it the gooeyness of a chocolate fudge cake. And for the rest, its walking into a designer brand store. So many of us have sprouted wings and a halo stepping into Creaseys, amidst the abundance of designer handbags and high end make up products. But often times, this ecstasy is crushed when the price tag is overturned. Why, oh, why does perfection have to be so expensive? The truth is, it doesn’t. And here in Guernsey, we’ve come to realise this. It’s not like we’re burdened with an excessive number of designer lines to choose from in our high street, but it has given us an appreciation for a good bargain. This has factored into fashion today, with high street labels providing access to the more desirable clothing for a lower cost. It’s the same with accessories and beauty products; we recognise that Boots Essentials do just the same job as Clarins or Clinique. To those who wonder why anyone would favour Plimsolls over Prada, there are many reasons other than income which would influence a person’s wardrobe choices, including personal taste. Some people just prefer a more casual look, so it’s nothing to be embarrassed about if your jewellery was half price at Accessorize. At the same time, you shouldn’t feel ashamed that you spent more money on a Louis Vuitton than a weekly food shop. It’s important to treat

yourself to a little luxury every now and then, even if you do have to be a little frugal in the week afterwards. There are, of course, other things to be taken into consideration when deciding where to spend your money. Many will not even enter a store if its manufacturing is confirmed unethical (using child labour, for example) or its products are not hypoallergenic, and if you can’t have one without the other, it must be contemplated whether clear skin is worth more than a clear conscience. In the end, all that matters are your comfort and your confidence. If you feel good wearing what you do, it is not anyone else’s business to tell you that the way you dress is incorrect. If expressing yourself through an eccentric fashion statement is how you feel you want to make an impression, go for it. As long as it appropriate for the occasion and inoffensive, just be yourself! Your personality is your best outfit. Words Isabelle Withers

COLOUR MY C WORLD... LIFESTYLE. BEAUTY.

The vibrant, burning colours of Guernsey’s west coast sunset were merged and blended so they gently bleed and meld into a fiery cascade of soft waves.

When GSY Life reader Grace Shearer, a 17-year-old student, said she wanted a bold new colour we knew exactly who to turn to. Grace’s brief was to ‘walk out feeling special’, and the team at allbeauty could not have been more excited to get to work. The term ‘crowning glory’ could have been coined for Grace’s hair. Bountifully thick, long and naturally wavy, her locks are a hairdresser’s dream.

Mike, along with stylists Alix Caldwell and Georgia Nisioti, worked on Grace’s hair to apply the colour for three hours. The five different copper, bronze, vermillion, magenta and purple tones needed a skilful touch and the careful blending didn’t finish with the colour application.

Mike used his own cutting techniques to create invisible layers that helped the colours to merge together, just as they do in the sky as the sun sinks into the horizon. ‘The feathered layers also add a little movement but are so subtle you’d think her hair was all one length,’ explains Mike. The team styled Grace’s hair into what

‘I’ve always had long hair and don’t experiment much with styling or different cuts, but I do like to try different colours. I’ve stayed away from lightening my hair so it’s in good condition,’ says Grace, who gave Creative Director Mike Najmi and the allbeauty team an open brief for a bold new colour. ‘I wanted to do something I’ve never done before,’ says Mike. ‘I don’t believe in repeating the looks I have done in the past, I always want to move forward, push myself and be original.’ Mike, who has travelled the world, has recently relocated to our beautiful island. ‘I have fallen in love with Guernsey and when I watched the sunset at Cobo one evening I knew exactly the look I wanted to create with Grace’s hair.’ #07. There’s no denying that we’re an Island of sun worshippers and with positive terms such as “healthy glow” and “sun kissed” reinforcing the trend for tanned skin, it’s time to ask, “are we really taking the safe sun message as seriously as we should be?”. Statistics would suggest we’re not, with rates of skin cancer in Guernsey almost double those elsewhere in the UK.

SKINCARE

One of the most common excuses for avoiding sun protection is that people “don’t like the feeling of sunscreen” but greasy textures are a thing of the past. The latest formulas offer an impressive array of choices and there really is something for everyone! There are products which are quick to apply and easily absorbed in the form of lightweight mousses, sprays and roll-ons such as NIVEA Sun Roll-On SPF 30 (£7.99), which has the added benefit of being presented in a handbag or travel friendly 50ml size.

BENEFITS!

Those concerned about heavy formulas causing breakouts should look for non-comedogenic (not pore clogging) formulas whilst those with dry skin should seek out nourishing lotions and creams such as Thalgo Age Defence Sun Lotion SPF30 (£26.25) or Ladival Advance Infrared Protection System Lotion SPF15 (£19.99).

Speciality formulas such as Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 (£25.17) and Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Dry Touch Protective Mist SPF50 (£8) specifically target sporty and sensitive types respectively- with the latter offering particularly impressive protection at an affordable price. Furthermore, we’ve been highly impressed with the latest innovations which include formulas with cooling benefits such as Piz Buin Protect & Cool Refreshing Sun Mousse SPF15 (£9) and properties such as added insect repellent, as found in the ingenious Soltan Protect & Repel Spray SPF30 (£6), which saves on both packing space and product application time.

CHEMICAL VS MINERAL! As the popularity of natural products increases, many people are opting to switch from chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays & prevent the majority passing through skin, to mineral versions, which contain physical blocks such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide to reflect harmful rays off skin. There are pros and cons to both. Mineral sunscreens are considered to be the preferred choice for those with sensitive skin and we recommend Green People Scent-Free Sun Lotion SPF30 (£19.09). They’re also a good choice for impatient people as they can be applied immediately before sun exposure, whereas chemical versions should be applied at least half an hour before. Check out Clinique SPF30 Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for Body (£21). Mineral sunscreens have traditionally been associated with causing an unsightly “white cast” but the new formulations have largely addressed this.

FAKE IT!

1.

When you need an instant colour boost, reach for Benefit Hoola Zero Tan Lines (£16.50), a wash-off formula which gives a believable, matte hint of bronze.

The healthiest way to tan remains faking it. Long gone are the days of streaky, oompa lumpa fake tans reminiscent of Z-list celebrities. The new breed of fake tans offer believable colour in easy to use formulas.

2.

Clarins are renowned for their realistic looking tans and we love their Self Tanning Milky Lotion (£16.70), which boasts a delectable fig aroma.

JARGON BUSTER

Over half of people struggle to understand the jargon associated with sun care products so be sure to take our handy “cut out & keep” guide when shopping for your summer sunscreen. “Broad spectrum”- means that a product offers protection against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Star symbols act as a rating, with 5 being the best. “SPF” (Sun Protection Factor)this solely relates to the protection offered against UVB rays and is a multiple. The number signifies the increased time you’d take to burn when using the product compared with no sun protection. For example, If you naturally burn after 10 minutes of sun exposure, SPF15 would increase the time it takes to burn to 150 minutes, or two and a half hours. Note that the higher the SPF number, the more chemicals a non-mineral sunscreen contains, thereby increasing the chances of irritation.

FITNESS FOR ALL When you meet Shelley Nicholls, her enthusiasm for bringing fitness activity into people’s lives is tangible; her obvious passion for what she is trying to achieve in her role at Beau Sejour would get most of us dusting off our gym membership cards… Shelley is Beau Sejour’s new Active Health Manager – a role she has held since January. With overall responsibility for the centre’s fitness activity provision, including the newly refurbished gym, a team of both full and part-time instructors and the range of classes provided, her job can be a bit of a juggling act. But she seems to thrive on it. ‘The recent gym refurbishment project was a challenge on many levels but I am thrilled with the result and I hope all our customers will be too. We had to set up a temporary facility in the Dave Ferguson Hall whilst the work was completed – a logistical challenge in itself - but it has been worth the ‘pain’. ‘We have a totally refurbished spin studio with new bikes, sound and lighting systems; within the gym itself we have reconfigured the space to increase the free weight and core areas and also replaced some of the bikes and cross trainers. I think we have achieved a lot within what was a limited budget.’ The gym project, along with some of the other initiatives Shelley has been involved with have been in direct response to customer feedback, as she explained. ‘We ran a survey amongst our gym users, asking them for feedback on facilities, equipment and a number of other areas. This gave us some valuable data that we then incorporated into the planning process. Technology also played a major part. We installed sensors on every piece of gym equipment to monitor usage levels and ‘hotspots’ during the day. Having evidence-based research of this type means that the improvements we have made will produce really positive results.’ Shelley has also had to make adjustments

to some of the class timings to cater for specific user groups. ‘The centre is now opening at 6.30am for Freedom Members and we are starting some of our classes earlier. Customers had told us that they often had to leave classes before the end in order to get to work on time. We have also introduced a few intensive half hour classes and I have re-worked the timetable to stagger timings to minimise pressure on the shower and changing facilities – a bit of a jigsaw puzzle but it will improve the overall customer experience.’ Part of Shelley’s role is to identify any gaps in Beau Sejour’s fitness provision for the Guernsey public as a whole. ‘As a public sector organisation, we need to cater for everyone irrespective of age or ability. It’s so important for people to ‘get moving’ and to include some form of fitness activity as a normal part of their everyday lives.’ One gap in the local market that Shelley has identified is the late primary/early teens provision. ‘This is an island-wide issue according to most of the groups and organisations with which we work. It’s important to make fitness activity for this age group more fun and exciting. They tend to respond better to group activity and classes. We want to push this area and get these youngsters engaged with some sort of activity before they develop sedentary preferences.’ Shelley’s passion for fitness stemmed from her own teenage years. ‘There weren’t so many options available – you were either good at a particular sport or not. I want to make youngsters realise that there will be some sort of activity they will enjoy even if they aren’t the next Serena Guthrie.’ Image is another challenge for Shelley

when tackling this market. ‘Girls especially are under lots of peer pressure when it comes to what they look like. One of our challenges is to change the perception and convince them that taking exercise is a positive thing and that if they are looking a bit hot and sweaty, and with less than perfect makeup – that’s absolutely fine.’ Shelley is looking forward to what’s ahead now that the gym project is under her belt. ‘Having some form of exercise in your dayto-day life is key to a healthy lifestyle. We aim to offer something for everyone. Our staff are all extremely approachable and are happy to discuss what an individual wants to achieve – from weight loss to general fitness, recovery from illness or injury to training for a triathlon. ‘Everyone can find some form of activity that they can enjoy in a friendly nonintimidating atmosphere.’

I’m not sure any other sport offers that.’ Three years ago the sport underwent a transformation when KPMG agreed a three year sponsorship that allowed Guernsey Touch to sign a lease to make KGV their permanent home. ‘Moving to KGV has allowed us to put in place plans that we had only been able to talk about as we didn’t have a venue that was big enough. Station Director Island FM & Channel 103

RICHARD HARDING

As a radio station we are very lucky to be involved in hundreds of events every year across our Bailiwick. One annual event that we are particularly happy to be involved in is the Guernsey Customer Service Awards, this year sponsored by Sure. Providing or receiving great customer service should be one of the easier challenges that face us in business but it’s funny how none of us have to travel too far before experiencing behaviour that falls short of what would be an acceptable minimum. On a small island like ours, getting this part of our business right has to be critical, surely? That is why we love being a media partner for the awards that recognises all the good customer service that goes on across our island. It really does provide a focus and spotlight on the positive stuff that goes on, across many industries and from all manner of people.

Over the last few years I have been fortunate enough to sit on the judging panel. We spend several hours looking through several thousand recommendations and I find it a very motivational few hours. It inspires me to read about islanders that make a real difference to themselves, their businesses, and to the island of Guernsey.

apathy very well, and the energy and passion there is for these awards is immense.

The great service highlighted by members of the public help make this beautiful island so special and unique. It is very fitting that exceptional customer service is recognised and rewarded and actually that there is so much of it going on regularly. Of course there are many businesses that have plenty of room for improvement, but it is healthy to recognise the good stuff that will hopefully inspire others to mirror the behaviour.

For those that didn’t win this year you should celebrate being nominated and you should be congratulated on the great buzz there is on this Island that you have contributed towards.

I love the fact that several thousand people on our island get involved by voting. I don’t think this island does

It stood vast and ancient before her like a mountain carved from the wilderness preceding civilization. The house may have stood resolute as the summit it resembled but the sense of foreboding it filled her with made it feel as though it was alive; breathing dread into its surroundings. But it was her home now. Mary took a cautious step onto the front porch and placed her newly made key into the rusting lock. It turned with some reluctance, but she forced it until it gave in. The residence smelled of damp and mould clung to the walls and remaining furniture. Ignoring the foul odours and sights, she made her way up the stairs, intrigued to see what awaited her in the turret looming over the driveway outside. Pictures, dry with age, hung from the wall of the stairwell in shattered frames. They seemed to reflect their own world into the one Mary lived in, for both were only shades of black, white and grey. Continuing upwards, she eventually found herself facing a paint-chipped door, on the other side of which was… a bathroom. Even more puzzling was the state of it- grimy and tatty- compared with the pristine mirror stretching from floor to ceiling opposite her. The glistening glass was so out of place, Mary couldn’t help but want to study it further. She stretched out her fingers towards it and stroked its surface, alarmed to watch it jolt backwards at her lightest touch and reveal a blinding light she had to shield her eyes from. Once the luminescence had dimmed, Mary’s breath was stolen from her lungs as the most wonderful vision met her. She stood upon a tall hill, overlooking an island brimming with greenery. The sheer vibrancy of the colour made her eyesight blur but she pushed her dizziness aside so that she could take in more of the brilliant scenery. Tufts of pink, orange and purple flowers were sporadically dotted over the island, as vivid as anything she had ever dreamed- even the buildings were glorious shades of cream and red. What made her heart soar higher than any bird was how the golden rays of the fiery sun twinkled on the glistening sea; medallions and diamonds shimmering side by side. Mary drank it all in like the sweetest thing she had ever tasted, savouring its splendour. She peered down at the grass beneath her feet and noticed the stone carved in block lettering. $MART €URRENC¥

During the early hours of 24th June 2016, the UK witnessed history unfold as the majority of the British public voted in favour of leaving the EU - much to the surprise of the media, the polls and the bookies all of whom had called a remain outcome only hours before. By the time most of us had woken up on the 24th June the pound had fallen by over 8% against the dollar and by 5% against the Euro. Whilst, in some ways, this can be beneficial for the UK economy (exports are now considerably cheaper in foreign currencies) one of the drawbacks is that our beloved holidays just became a whole lot more expensive. Whilst this article cannot reverse the impact Brexit has had on the strength of the pound, it does aim to soften the blow by comparing the different methods available for obtaining foreign currency efficiently. It would be very difficult to approach this topic without first warning of buying foreign currency at the airport. Whilst this can be a perfectly viable solution (if pre-ordered in advanced) last minute, on-the-day, purchases should be avoided at all costs. Airport currency vendors know they operate within a captive market – they are the last port of call before arriving at your holiday destination. Most vendors charge a significant spread (the difference between the price they are willing to buy and the price they are willing to sell currency at) for the convenience and this will ultimately result in an unfavourable exchange rate. This could leave you significantly

out of pocket or, at the very least, result in a few less sangrias being consumed – neither of which sounds particularly appealing! When it comes to sourcing foreign currency there are generally two camps; those who prefer to acquire currency in advance and those who prefer to exchange currency, on-thefly, as they spend. Those who prefer to obtain currency prior to their vacation should note that cash is not always king. Vendors usually offer preferential rates for those willing to adopt their prepaid cards as an alternative to receiving physical cash. Normally these act in a similar manner to how your debit card works locally; there is no charge for purchases abroad and currency can usually be withdrawn at ATMs for free. Most can also be topped up online which can prove useful if you find yourself running short or if you prefer to adopt a strategy of purchasing currency over a number of months to mitigate the risk of buying at the least appealing rate. An extension of this concept is the peer-to-peer site, WeSwap. Essentially, WeSwap functions as an exchange and seeks to match customers who have opposite currency requirements. Unlike most conventional vendors, when you transact on WeSwap both parties have a genuine need for currency each is providing the other. This will lead to a tighter spread as neither party has to worry about making a profit when converting the proceeds received back into their domestic currency. Customers

are provided with a prepaid card that is linked to their online WeSwap account. Users can choose to fund up to 18 different “currency wallets” and the correct balance will automatically be deducted as purchases are made. Those that prefer to exchange-as-theyspend should look towards specialist currency credit cards. These are virtually identical to ordinary credit cards but they exclude the foreign transaction charges usually incurred when you spend in a currency other than GBP. Such charges can be in the region of 3.00% of the total transaction value and this will quickly ramp up the costs. When these charges are omitted, credit card providers usually offer the most attractive foreign exchange rates. Possibly the most beneficial aspect of this method is that the only the exact amount required is exchanged. This is a perk that is often overlooked and prevents any surplus currency having to be changed back into pounds later on. Every time currency is exchanged the commission taken by the vendor results in a destruction of wealth. Whilst there are number of these specialist cards on the market, unfortunately not all are available to Guernsey residents. One that is (there may be others) is the MBNA Everyday Plus Credit Card. This has all of the features outlined above. However, the underlying provided is American Express which isn’t as widely accepted as the likes of VISA and MasterCard and this can limit its usefulness when

travelling abroad. An alternative solution has recently been launched by the retail currency giant Travelex. Holders of what has been dubbed “the Supercard” are provided with a special MasterCard that they must link to one (or multiple) of their existing credit cards using the mobile app. As you spend abroad, the Supercard will initially be billed in the local currency. The amount is then converted at the MasterCard rate (which is usually very attractive) before being charged to the underlying credit card in pounds. Once again, this process is designed to circumvent the foreign transaction charges but has the additional added benefit that you can continue to collect any points/airmiles/cashback that you would have been entitled to if you had spent on the linked card directly.

Airport Rate (on the day)

Above costs are based on the currency rates published by the providers as at 18/07/16

But is the outcome actually worth the extra effort? The table on the right compares the different cost, in pounds, of purchasing either $1,000 or €1,000 using the methods discussed above. In both currencies, the worst rate was clearly the airport rate. This worked out over 15% more expensive than the best rate (the specialist credit cards). This is a considerable saving and demonstrates how, by following the smart currency, you can get more bang for your buck and hopefully claw back some of the purchasing power the pound has recently lost.

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.

Conor Burke CertPFS

Conor provides effective financial solutions and insurance products, emphasising a personal service and building long-standing relationships.

GOING, GOING, GONE. The Guernsey property market continues to show signs of improvement with more property sales in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2015 (Jan – June 2015 saw 209 transactions whereas Jan – June 2016 saw 275 transactions). This is a good indication of increased confidence in our market and our own indicators, based on new applications and appointments do not show any signs of a slowdown. So what is the reason for the increase? At Oracle we believe it is down to a number of factors; Firstly, vendors and developers are being more realistic with their asking prices. It’s been a while since we have seen so many ‘value for money’ purchases than ever before with some first time buyers buying a three bed semi for under £360,000.

Oracle is a highly experienced group of professional advisers based in Guernsey, who provide effective financial solutions and insurance products with an emphasis on personal service and long-standing relationships. In a sea of financial and insurance providers, Oracle is a strong, independent partner and they aim to look after your best interests over the long term. Their advice is clear, jargon-free and tailored to your individual circumstances.

Secondly, we believe that, as time passes, clients are more comfortable with the current market and have adjusted to the fact that property prices can reduce (even in Guernsey) and that this is not necessarily a bad thing. And finally a lending prospective, the cost of borrowing has steadily reduced with some lenders currently offering their lowest ever rates. The appetite to lend in Guernsey continues to increase with NatWest as the largest lender on the island and other lenders such as Barclays revamping their offering in a bid to increase their market share, adding increased choice to the consumer and broker alike. The result of lower rates is not just benefiting first time buyers and home movers. We are increasingly seeing enquiries from clients interested in moving their mortgage to avail themselves of these better rates and criteria. If you are considering moving up the property market or would like to discuss your mortgage options why not call the team on 727347 or email mortgages@oraclefinance.gg

VAL FLEURY Qube Construction’s latest development is the prestigious Val Fleury, situated in an enviable location in Hauteville, St Peter Port, a stone’s throw from all the action of Town. Comprising 14 three or four-bedroom townhouses, the homes are nearing completion and No. 10 is staged as an elegant showhome. The house is the product of many months’ hard work from a number of local suppliers and the entire project has been coordinated by Ray Griffiths, of Oxfordshire-based Wychwood Design and local designer Arthur Pugh. Ray established Wychwood Design, a manufacturer of high quality fitted and freestanding furniture in 1969, having worked previously as a design and technology teacher. ‘My links with Guernsey go back almost that far!’ he jokes. The list of projects with which he has been commissioned locally is extensive, to say the least and covers a broad spectrum of both residential and commercial work. Clients include the Sarnia Hotels group and many high end restaurants, from Pier 17 to Mora and shopfits including Qube’s own Maison de Champagne and Ray & Scott’s jewellery counter. Wychwood works worldwide and

Ray casually mentions a number of Moscow and London establishments too. Despite Wychwood’s impressive client list and credentials, Ray humbly states that Val Fleury is his first ‘complete’ interior design project. ‘We were to provide all the fitted and freestanding furniture - using a lot of European walnut to match the doors - all of which was bespoke for the project. We were fortunate to be able to persuade Arthur Pugh, a local designer now in semi-retirement - to help us make the house attractive. He in turn enlisted a number of extremely cooperative local studios and shops to source and provide the accessories.’ ‘It was also my first foray into layout design,’ says Ray, ‘and I loved it! We designed Val Fleury as an honest, relatively modern living space which would appeal to a wide range of tastes and so we tried an objective approach to room layouts.’ Arthur, like Ray, has a client list a lot longer than his arm. Extremely experienced as a designer and signwriter, he is responsible for the interiors of countless local establishments, including Les Folies d’Amour nightclub.

Although small, they have the ability to source a vast variety of items - anything too big for the shop can be ordered with a delivery time of usually only 3-4 weeks. And a huge selling point is their ability to deliver out of hours and remove the packaging! Wychwood Design have manufactured the furniture at Val Fleury in the hope that future clients - whether domestic or commercial - will approach them; they are always happy to quote for any order, large or small. Ray and Arthur have clearly enjoyed their partnership with the development and Ray will certainly be planning plenty more visits here. ‘Business has been hard-won but over the years my contacts have become old friends. I absolutely love it here.’ ‘I’ve refitted Folies too many times to mention!’ he quips. He enjoyed putting flesh on the ‘bones’ of the Val Fleury showhome. Armed with Wychwood’s furniture and layout he was tasked with sourcing and placing items to turn the house into a home. ‘The idea was to lend the house a ‘family home’ theme, without being too prescriptive,’ he explains.

To find out more contact Martel Maides, Living Room or Sarnia Estate Agents. Words Katie Whitford Images Mike Brehaut, Creative.gg

‘We have a number of local suppliers to thank and commend for their involvement in No.10,’ explain Ray and Arthur. ‘Everything seen in the house - from the glassware on the table to the towels in the bathroom and the linen on the beds - has been produced and provided free-of-charge by a handful of people.’ Lisa Scott, of long-established upholstery manufacturer, Graham Scott & Co, worked hard to plan and produce some eye-catching soft furnishings including blinds, curtains, cushions and upholstered items. She and Arthur chose from Warwick fabrics to produce a muted palette of greys, browns and whites with wonderful texture, flashes of metallic and geometric designs which are understated yet out-of-theordinary, complementing perfectly the solid craftsmanship of Wychwood’s furniture. Channel Island Ceramics - a company that has flourished in the island for nearly 40 years - offered help in the form of Rachel Barclay, an interior designer. She supplied Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware and tiles and Hansgrohe taps (arguably the best brassware in the industry). She also procured glassware, crockery and kitchen accessories from the ‘Neptune’ and ‘New Wave’ ranges from Villeroy & Boch, most of which can be purchased from the company’s Forest Road premises. For all the bed linen, towels, duvets and pillows, Arthur approached Pete de Laune, of Guernsey Beds and Bedding in the Lower Pollet. Although Pete is never one to blow his own trumpet, he is well known locally for his exceptional customer service and willingness to go the extra mile for clients. ‘I

CALM AND

CARRY ON FINANCE EXPERT DEPUTY LYNDON TROTT TALKS BREXIT The UK’s decision to leave the EU has thrown up a number of questions about what Guernsey will do in the future - and how those changes will affect the local business environment. Keen to reassure islanders in this current period of uncertainty, Guernsey’s Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of Guernsey Finance Lyndon Trott shares his thoughts on the opportunities and challenges ahead.

What does Brexit mean for Guernsey? The fact is that Guernsey has never been part of the EU and will continue to be outside of the EU no matter how the UK’s relationship develops post-Brexit. Over the years the Bailiwick has successfully negotiated its own access to EU financial markets as a non-EU jurisdiction. Our main trading relationships, such as those in financial services, will remain intact.

At the moment we are not intending to change our relationships with either the EU or the UK. We will engage with the UK throughout the negotiations of its new relationship with the EU and we will continue to ensure we maintain access to European markets, through which we provide liquidity and investment into European economies. As a jurisdiction, we have maintained a strong presence in Brussels over the years and we are not planning to change that.

What does this all mean in practice? Well the outlook for Guernsey’s funds industry, for example, is strong. Under the much-discussed Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) Guernsey remains a third country – the only change being that when the third country passport is extended to Guernsey, firms will have to consider using countries such as Ireland or the Netherlands as the member state of reference instead of having the UK #07. AUG/SEPT 2016. THE COMPARE ISSUE.

as an option. Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) and Regulation (MiFIR) contain similar third country provisions. Guernsey’s recognition as an OECD member is related directly to its relationship to the UK, and the UK’s membership of the OECD is direct not via the EU. The recent MoneyVal report shows that Guernsey remains one of the leading jurisdictions in combatting financial crime – in its own right. There is also no impact on our Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) or Common Reporting Standard (CRS) status as neither are contingent on the UK being an EU member. Tax Information Exchange Agreements and Double Taxation Arrangements are negotiated and signed directly between Guernsey and the relevant countries. In short, Guernsey will provide stability for business in a time of some uncertainty.

In light of Brexit, how can

we best sell ourselves off island? Let me highlight two important points that Standard & Poor’s made about Guernsey recently: ‘Guernsey’s financial sector will continue to benefit from its strong links to the UK, a well-established regulatory framework, Guernsey’s stable internal policy-making response, and a favourable business environment… [and] ‘Guernsey’s existing relationship with the EU will not be significantly affected by the exit of the UK from the EU.’ We are recognised as stable, and our aim is to maintain this high level of stability. It is also worth mentioning that our highest growth markets are not actually in the EU. It therefore makes sense for us to continue investing in other markets such as South East Asia, China, the Americas, South Africa and the Middle East – these are the focus of much of GF’s work. That said though, we should, and will continue to work in the EU. And, of course, our prospects in the UK are potentially enhanced by Brexit so we need to identify and pursue new opportunities there.

What could be some of the short or long term impacts? Guernsey has not earned its reputation as a premier international finance centre by being complacent. As I said, we will be actively looking for new business opportunities as the UK changes its relationship with the EU. It is not clear yet whether those opportunities will include brokering new trading deals or exploring new market access agreements in services but regardless, we will embrace any new business opportunities that emerge. We have a proven track record as an innovative finance centre. Guernsey designed the first Protected Cell Company for the captive insurance market and has recently introduced Guernsey Foundations to expand our private wealth market. We are home to the Channel Islands Aircraft Registry – 2-REG- and the Channel Islands Securities Exchange. We have developed an impressive skills base with a talent pool of professionals who have the knowledge and expertise to work in a fast-changing international environment. Our strength going forward will be our ability to innovate and for government to draw on the expertise in our private sector.

Lyndon pictured in front of the new Guernsey Finance branding, which will launch officially ahead of the new off-island conference season in the autumn.

What can be done to reassure current investors or those doing business with Guernsey? Guernsey remains ahead of the curve in terms of regulation, providing a robust and flexible regime. We are also in a leading position in meeting international standards with a mature and sophisticated antimoney laundering and anti-terror financing regime – something that cannot be under-estimated in today’s environment. The fact that we meet EU data standards underlines our position as a trusted jurisdiction as well as a stable one. In a world where it is more important than ever to keep pace with the changing international standards, our businesses can provide structures with robust governance that comply with increasingly complex international reporting requirements. #07. AUG/SEPT 2016. THE COMPARE ISSUE.

Change brings with it opportunity and I am confident that, through strong partnership between the government, regulator and the private sector, we can and will make a success of Brexit. An example of how effectively we work together was evidenced when Guernsey was recommended for a ‘third country’ passport under AIFMD by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) on 19 July. Their assessment demonstrated the confidence and trust in our regulatory framework and supervisory practices and in our track record as a jurisdiction that meets the highest international standards. Guernsey was one of only five jurisdictions to receive an unqualified and positive assessment out of the 12 countries reviewed. The ESMA advice provides fantastic stability for investors and fund managers alike. Words Tom Bradshaw

A LONG RECORD OF SUCCESS Third generation joins Archivist management as the team marks silver jubilee Having grown considerably from its humble origins, the island’s leading document storage and destruction company is this summer marking its 25th anniversary. Founded by former stockbroker Tim Tilden-Smith with his daughter Trish and son-in-law Bryan Smitheram in 1990, Archivist now has three generations of the family in the senior management team. Amelia Smitheram, 24, has just been promoted to manager, joining her parents Bryan and Trish – both directors - in the running of the company. Fitting for the silver jubilee, its silver branding can be seen all over Guernsey, with a fleet of vehicles on the roads and

500 stylish shredding pods in workspaces island-wide. On top of that timely coincidence are big plans to celebrate the milestone this summer, including staff and client parties and sponsoring a yacht race. Reflecting on the success of the business, Trish said always listening to their customers needs were key. ‘Customer service reigns supreme. We pride ourselves on offering a professional, tailor made service of the highest standard.’ The strategy has paid off with Archivist enjoying strong customer loyalty – its initial clients are all still with the business. ‘We began as a one-man band with a Vauxhall Nova and now have 18 members of staff, seven vehicles and seven warehouses. Having commenced with the idea of storage, we have developed to meet our customers growing needs and now offer a full range of services including collection, deliveries, shredding and scanning. We see the company going from strength to strength with Amelia taking an increasing role,’ added Trish. Amelia said she always knew she would join the family business. ‘I have always been involved as I have been brought up alongside Archivist so have a strong attachment to our company, #07. staff and clients. My first role was helping to paint the office walls grey when I was just 18 months old wearing a yellow jumpsuit!’ ‘I feel very proud to be given the responsibility to bring our company forward into the future. My ambition is to become a director in the next five years and in that time I would like to further modernise the company by listening to our clients’ wants and needs and evolving from there.’ Reflecting on the origins of the business, Trish recalled: ‘We posted out a survey to over 400 potential clients to ask what they needed in terms of storage and out sourcing facilities.’ In response to that the first unit in Barras Lane Commercial Estate was built. ‘We offered something that no one else was giving. Companies were storing their business documents in garages and sheds while also taking up valuable office space. We listened and offered them what they wanted. Early on, one clearing bank asked for a commercial shredding machine to be installed and that side of the business has grown to be the largest on the island.’ Initially they offered customers heavyduty material bags to collect their shredding in before progressing to a basic wheelie bin.

‘After a period of time clients required something better looking for the office environment so we had a supplier custom design and manufacture 145lt designer pods (Portable On Demand Shredding).’ With the business rapidly expanding, Archivist bought its first building in the Braye Road Industrial Estate in 2002, followed by the second, five years later. At this point the shredding operation was moved to Braye Road where a larger capacity machine was subsequently installed that pumps the shredded paper directly into a locked container, which is collected by Mayside when full to be recycled. Other services include fire safes and battle boxes for disaster recovery and business continuity. Archivist also supplies bespoke branded storage boxes for clients. Amelia said: ‘We offer a quick and reliable service and are very flexible to our clients’ needs. All this is made possible by having a great team working for us.’

PARTNER What is it like to work for you? Hard work but fun! Deloitte has a range of clients across many different sectors, many of which are international, and we employ people from a wide variety of backgrounds, with different skills, so no two days are ever the same. We are all very collaborative and like to get everyone involved in making this a great place to work. Of course we demand quite a lot of our people both in terms of passing the accountancy and tax professional examinations and in delivering a high quality service for our clients but we encourage people to develop and keep up hobbies and sports. Our people can have flexible hours so they can balance their work and life outside the office; it’s not unusual for staff to arrive at the office after a morning surf and work a little later to make up the hours.

How do you ensure your employees are happy?

If I had to sum up our purpose in one word it would be ‘impact’, for our clients, our people and in the community. Clients tell us they applaud the continued focus we place on developing our staff as individuals and how we encourage participation in and support for a range of charity and local community investment projects.

We are aware that the nature of our work can mean long hours at certain times of the year but we try to promote a sensible attitude to health and wellbeing. It’s about balance and making time for hobbies out of work. Last October we ran a popular wellbeing week giving people taster sessions of yoga and qi gong and motivational talks. We are planning this year’s wellbeing week at the moment. We are also very sociable and have a range of events throughout the year – weekly dress down, monthly office lunches at a restaurant, an annual day trip to Herm and a big Christmas party to name but a few.

How does your company contribute to island life?

What was your best personal mistake?

We support a number of charities including Young People Guernsey, Mind and Male Uprising Guernsey. We also help the Guernsey Football Club and have been involved in youth football sponsorships like the Deloitte Corbet Cup for over 10 years. We back school sports teams and also the Eisteddfod. Everyone likes to get involved - our staff are quick to sign up for charitable events like the Saffery Champness Rotary Walk, the 30/30 Challenge, EPIC Challenges, the Deloitte Ride Across Britain and the Global Corporate Challenge, which we won last year!

instead, partly influenced by a romantic attachment. The downside is I have barely used my languages since but I have had great fun in my career and ended up marrying the boyfriend! As an island what should we do more of? We should never take it for granted and we should be talking about all the great things that this island has to offer which is, after all, why so many of us have chosen to live here! What makes you love Guernsey? I love the fact that people in Guernsey work hard and are really good at what they do but don’t take themselves too seriously. The scenery here is stunning and really conducive to leading a healthy outdoor lifestyle whether that be cycling, running, walking or simply sitting on the beach. I have to pinch myself on a regular basis when I look around and think that this is where I live.

Invest with Bob Comparing Investments Trying to compare different investment options is a challenging task. The fine details can be vast and intimidating - even to people who work in the field. The approach we have developed to help us cut through the noise is to focus on a series of key questions. While our list is quite lengthy these days, what I thought might be useful in this piece is to share with you some of the key questions we ask ourselves. Question 1 - What would I own? What exactly are the underlying assets you are investing in? If you invest in our Global Blue Chip fund for example, you own shares in large, multinational and profitable businesses such as Apple Inc. If an investment can’t be explained in an understandable manner then we would recommend applying a healthy dose of caution. Within our team we jokingly call this the “crayon test” after the classic quote commonly attributed to Peter Lynch “Never invest in any idea you can’t illustrate with a crayon”. Question 2 - How easily can I get my money out? Getting into an investment is usually the easy part, getting out of course, is the bit which can be crucial. There is nothing wrong with investments that require investors to commit for a period of time. Many good investments such as property can’t provide “instant access” for obvious reasons. The key for investors is to be aware of such terms in advance and to be sure that the one they pick fits their circumstances. If your bathroom flooded, you might need to access some cash for example? If the answer is no, then you are free to seek the additional returns offered for illiquidity. If the answer is yes, then you may want to keep at least part of your portfolio in more liquid assets. Beyond the liquidity of the underlying assets, there are also other terms that may restrict your ability to withdraw funds. Are there penalty fees, minimum holding period conditions or in funds the ability to suspend redemptions? The latter issue is what we are seeing in the UK commercial property fund market at present. Fund structures that some investors may have thought offered instant access have come

BOB TANNAHILL, Ravenscroft Investment Management undone due to their ownership of illiquid assets, physical property in this case, and have had to suspend redemptions, or “gate”, to avoid being forced sellers at artificially depressed prices. Question 3 - What will I be charged? Charges on investments can be complicated. This can be for legitimate reasons or for the pursuit of opaqueness. When you are trying to work out what you will be charged on an investment it is always worth stressing that you want to know about all the charges involved not just the headline fee. Over time entry/exit charges, administration charges, performance fees and so forth can add up. I should stress though that as with so much in life cheap does not necessarily mean good in the world of investments. You just want to avoid significant overcharging. Personally I would much rather have my own money invested in assets I was comfortable with, run by people I trust with a proven process even if that did cost me a bit more. The overall outcome is likely to be better. Question 4 - Does the return sound plausible? Finally it is worth comparing the returns on an investment to other returns available in the market. My personal experience leads me to strongly believe that there really are no free lunches in the world of investing and more return always means more risk. While finding exactly what that risk is can be hard, the beauty of an acid test like this is that you don’t have to know exactly what the risk is - just that it is there. If somebody promises you 12% while everyone #07. AUG/SEPT 2016. THE COMPARE ISSUE.

else is offering 3.5% you know there is more risk somewhere. You didn’t have to understand the international banking system back in 2007 to know that Icelandic banks offering double the interest of everyone else where doing something aggressive somewhere. Ultimately if it looks too good to be true it probably is. So when it comes to the difficult job of trying to compare different investment options we find that questions like these, which allow you get to core issues quickly, are very helpful. By comparing a diverse range of options on the key factors that matter to you, you can compare the proverbial apples and oranges more easily than it might at first appear. We hope you find these questions as useful as we do.

Boil tenderized conch for 10 mins 2. Sauté onions, bell pepper & tomatoes 3. Add flour in cooking oil, stir until brown 4. Add conch water to brown flour and keep stirring until thickens into stew. This should take about 5 – 10 mins. 5. Add conch, sauté onions, bell pepper, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, cassava to stew 6. Season to taste with freshly squeezed lime juice, salt, goat pepper, thyme. 7. Serve hot and Enjoy! *** Fried monkfish or Calamari can be substituted for conch if these are not readily available! Mild chilli or anything that adds a “kick” can be substituted for goat pepper.

Commenting on the staff efforts, Tony Mealing, Chairman of the Staff Charity and Community Committee, explained, ‘The staff members wanted to demonstrate their own commitment to supporting worthy causes on the island. ‘The Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association was adopted as our local charity following an annual vote by staff members and we have been busy hosting a number of events to raise funds, ranging from a company cookbook to a quiz night. It has also been very rewarding for our staff to be able to provide practical support to the charity.’

CAREER FOCUS

CHARLOTTE PARR, 22 Assistant Manager, New Business Ipes

Meet Charlotte Parr, Assistant Manager, New Business at Ipes. Charlotte joined Ipes after completing her A-levels on the island. She decided not to go to University, and start her career and embark on a professional qualification instead. Charlotte joined Ipes in October 2012 as a Trainee Administrator working in their client teams, looking after a number of Private Equity structures. She moved across to the New Business set-up team where she has been promoted several times to her current role in July this year. Charlotte tells us a little more about herself.

What does your average day look like? My role is varied and no one day looks the same. The New Business team are constantly liaising with new and existing clients, as well as our colleagues in London, Luxembourg and Jersey. We focus on structuring and regulatory activity and assist our clients with the formation of new structures, whether those are in Guernsey or elsewhere. I love the variety my role brings and also the satisfaction of seeing our clients through from inception to launch.

School attended:

What professional training do you undertake?

Blanchelande College

I am currently undertaking the Diploma in Offshore Finance and Administration though The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA). This includes attending day classes at BPP Professional Education centre in Guernsey. I chose the ICSA qualification as it was the most relevant to the career path I wanted to take, but Ipes supports a number of other professional qualifications, one of the most popular being the accountancy qualification from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

What did you want to be when you were 8? Ballerina Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? Rosso. It’s near our office in St Peter Port so it’s great for impromptu after work drinks and food. Urban Kitchen is also a popular haunt with the Ipes Team as it’s literally outside our office. What is your favourite possession? Nothing, I live the simple life! Although if you see me walking to and from work my phone is always attached to me. I find listening to music a great way to unwind especially at the end of the day. What made you choose to work for Ipes? I chose to work for Ipes because I was looking for a long term career, where I could continue to study and develop a range of skills. Ipes is focused on providing a quality service, but ultimately developing their employees and providing a good work life balance. Ipes supports professional study both financially and through a dedicated paid study leave programme which is great as it means I can earn while I learn. Ipes also has a great sports and social programme, we recently had a “selfie” social challenge.

Where is your journey taking you? I started as a Trainee Administrator and now I’m an Assistant Manager. I hope to qualify by August 2017, at which time I hope to be able to continue to progress my career within Ipes on the management pathway. I also have a mentor who helps me with this and have been seconded to our other Ipes offices. There is also opportunities to transfer to these (London, Luxembourg and Jersey) which is something I may consider in the future. Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? I would always encourage students to choose a career that makes them happy. It is difficult to know straight away, but the key is surrounding yourself with colleagues and friends that will support you. Work experience is also a great way of gaining experience in different sectors for a short amount of time. Ipes always welcomes applications for work experience students.

About Ipes Ipes is a leading provider of outsourced services to Private Equity to Europe. Since 1998 we have grown to 210 employees over four locations in Guernsey, Jersey, London and Luxembourg. We focus on building long-term client relationships and apply the same approach with our staff by investing in their training and providing them a rewarding career.

CYBER

SECURITY

AT HOME AND IN THE OFFICE By Rene Brun, General Manager, Logicalis Guernsey In the past few years businesses in Guernsey have become increasingly concerned about cybersecurity. Every day new viruses are launched, ransomware is on the rise, and the threat of losing data, or control over your systems, is ever present. Just as businesses become more aware about the risks, and take steps to prevent the worst happening, cybercriminals turn to softer targets: your home computer and your smart phone- passports to your identify, your bank account, your life. The principles of cybersecurity are similar for businesses and for home. The only difference is scale and responsibility. For most people, the security of their work IT system is the responsibility of the IT department, or for small businesses, the business owner. At home, the responsibility rests with every individual.

Here are four ways to help keep your home and office safe:

1. SOFTWARE MAINTENANCE Everyone using a PC should make sure their software patches (the updates provided by the manufacturer) are up to date. This helps close security gaps and vulnerabilities in your system that cybercriminals could exploit. Some people are tempted to stick to older versions of software, however, it’s not a good idea because they are more vulnerable to viruses. Anti-virus software should be up to date as you are at risk whenever you go online. Your antivirus software may update itself automatically but otherwise aim to do this every day. Even then, be aware it doesn’t protect against everything and antivirus will not protect you against social engineering. Backing up your data by transferring precious photos and files onto an external device, such as a separate drive, or a memory stick, means you won’t lose it if your system gets wiped and has to be rebuilt. It also means that if you’re the victim of ransomware, when someone encrypts your files and demands a ransom in exchange for a key, you won’t be worried.

2. THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK Overall it’s important not to be too trusting online. If you receive an email, think about why you’re getting it – how a ‘company’ has got your email address, before opening it. Do not download attachments, or click on links in unsolicited emails, even if they at first seem to come from an email address used by a friend. Everyone should think before replying to emails too, and certainly do not offer up bank account details by email, as email accounts can be hacked so you may be communicating with a cybercriminal without knowing it.

4.

3. THE WEAKEST LINK As companies toughen up their system security, employees become the weakest link as cybercriminals use social engineering, targeting specific people as a ‘jump’ to their real targets – your company and its systems. Cybercriminals can get the software to create encryption programmes to hold your computer to ransom for as little as $5,000. Once they encrypt a company’s data, they can demand large sums to unlock it. People should be careful about what information they share online – whether on social networks or on other websites. From Facebook it can be possible to get someone’s full name, date of birth, car registration number (if in a photo) and then from this to work out their address. People may also post online about when they’re on holiday – just the sort of information a fraudster could use to spam mail your contacts, asking for money. Check your privacy settings and be careful about what you share.

Be careful about what websites you use Cybercriminals may target people online by creating copies of legitimate websites, then paying to get high SEO rankings so that they appear near the top of search results. This means that if, for example, you search for the name of your bank you may inadvertently click onto a fake site with a very similar web address that looks just like your own bank’s site. You may then end up adding in all your personal details, putting you at risk of fraud. For internet banking always type in the address of the site your bank gave you – being careful not to make any tiny errors that could take you to a fake site.

When using a new website, research a site beforehand and think about what information you’re giving it and how it may be used.

WORKSPACES Sure has opened the doors to its newlook store on the High Street designed to offer Guernsey customers a new, revolutionary shopping experience. The store features digital interactive browsing, where customers can use large touchscreens to choose the phone and plans they want, as well as new selfserve top-up and bill payment kiosks. The technology will reduce queuing time and allow Sure customers to put together their own packages, compare phones or simply email themselves more information that can be perused at their own leisure. As well as the interactive touchscreens, the new store has been given a modern makeover with video screens wrapped around the interior. A wider entrance accommodates wheelchairs and mobility scooters while access to interactive touchscreens and phone displays is at an appropriate height. The store was closed for a week to complete the upgrade. Sure’s head of retail, John Harvey, said: “The new interactive store is an exciting development and the latest innovation we’ve brought to our Guernsey customers. “We’ve listened to their feedback and it’s with their help that we’ve designed a fantastic new store with great features to enhance our customers’ experiences and cut their waiting time. “The store is designed in a series of zones, each one giving our customers access to the services they need during their visit, they can be in and out quickly if they want or can spend more time with our staff finding out about our products and services.”
