UPFRONT / EDITORS NOTE
NOTE
The word February is derived from the Latin word Februarius, the origin of which is the Roman festival of purification called Februa. The second month of the year, where the hustle-bustle of the holidays is left behind February is the month which sees many of us getting our first breath of fresh air. By this time of year, the excitement of New Year’s resolutions are either strongly in place in our day to day lives or have been abandoned by the wayside. This year, however, my ‘New Year’s resolution’ was slightly different from the norm. Instead of forbidding myself to eat chocolate and hit the gym six times a week to get abs that could rival those of Gerard Butler in 300, I have decided to take this year to, as Kylie Jenner said, ‘realize things’. As stupid as it sounds she does have a point. Already in these two months, I have realized that I have lost a lot of what I used to be good at; I can’t touch my toes anymore! But this year I want to get back all those skills/talents and evolve into a better version than I ever used to be... so watch this space. So, with evolve as this month’s theme, we decided to look at the evolution of Valentine’s Day, give you an idea for the perfect breakfast in bed for your loved one and also have an exclusive interview with the creative behind the Transformers comics, James Roberts. Happy reading!

PET HERO #1
‘Pet Hero’ is a monthly competition where Isabelle Vets will nominate a pet who they believe has overcome, with stoicism and bravery, an exceptional medical condition, injury or surgery. This could be your pet and with the love and care of his owner and the help of Isabelle Vets they have battled through to become happy and healthy pets, again. At the end of 2017 we will ask all readers to vote for the ‘Pet Hero of the Year’ who will receive a prize in keeping with their position of being a very special animal. You can follow the competition at www.facebook.com/isabellevets

Meet Buddy... Buddy is one of life’s great enthusiasts; full of energy and vitality.
Unfortunately, when he was still only four months old he took a leap too far by jumping off a balcony and breaking both his right front and right hind legs very badly. He arrived at Isabelle Vets cradled by his owner and in obvious shock and distress. He was greeted by the emergency vet who provided pain relief, medication to relieve the shock and intravenous fluids and was admitted to assess the extent of the injuries. Once Buddy was stabilised it was essential to determine the extent and severity of the injuries. A light anaesthetic and x-rays revealed the damage! The poor little fellow had broken all four of his metacarpal bones (the bones across the front of his foot, below the wrist) which meant that he had no stability and they would need extensive surgery on many of these bones to allow the leg to function normally again. The x-ray of the right hind leg revealed an equally calamitous situation with the tibial tuberosity (the part of the lower leg bone to which the knee cap is attached and from which, in a young dog the bone grows) torn away from the main part of the bone. Surgeon, Doreen Ford decided that it would require two periods of surgery and that it was essential to firstly stabilise the right hind tibial fracture. Surgery was performed to place an internal orthopaedic pin and wire. Everything went well and intensive nursing with pain relief medication kept him comfortable and in the morning he had three good legs! The second piece of surgery on the front paw was far more complex taking several hours. The metacarpal bones of a young, small dog are only millimetres wide and also very soft and easy to damage. An additional problem was that the bones were considerably displaced due to by the severity of the impact of the fall. Doreen Ford had to reset all of the bones and surgically placed very fine pins within the bone structures to stabilise the toes. It was a success and within a couple of days Buddy was reunited with his owner. Buddy had to wear a leg support to protect the surgery for several weeks. Young dogs heal rapidly and within a month he was walking well.
Isabelle Vets Lastest News We are anticipating 2017 to be an exciting year for Isabelle Vets and for all our patients and clients. Many will remember that we had a major upgrade of the main Route Isabelle Practice in 2013 and 2014 with a completely new ‘fit out’ and upgrade of all of the rooms, new rooms being added and all new IT systems. This provided us with first class surgical, dental and diagnostic suites and modern consulting facilities as well as comfortable and safe kennelling and cattery. In 2016 we welcomed new vets Naz Mukadam and Ben Howitt to our team and in 2017 we will be opening our new ‘North of Island’ facility, ‘Isabelle Vets L’Islet’ which will provide modern consulting and nursing care for the pets of the many Islanders who live nearby. We will be increasing our diagnostic capabilities with a Siemens C.T. scanner unit (similar to the C.T. scanner at the P.E.H.) and a hydrotherapy clinic for dog rehabilitation and therapy. Car parking and access is excellent and we know that it will be very popular.
w w w. i s ab e l l eve t s . c o. u k
Six weeks on it is lovely to see him active, happy and pain free. Surgery has been a great success. We hope Buddy has a long and happy life ahead of him and perhaps learns to hit the brakes before the balcony next time; but he is, to us and his owners, a true Pet Hero.

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH Photographer: Tim Langlois As a photographer I am constantly drawn to the coast where the landscape is always changing depending on tide, weather and time of day. But for many the coastline is more than just a beauty spot. It is a source of leisure, exercise and employment. This shot is a poignant reminder of all the local fisherman who go about their business every day often heading out and returning under the cover of darkness and easily forgotten. Many of us, myself included enjoy nothing more than fresh locally caught seafood when dining out and it is to these toilers of the sea to whom we owe our thanks.

DAPHNE Daphne is among approximately 40 Romanian rescue dogs now living the good life in Guernsey. She was saved by a rescuer in Bucharest as a small, unweaned puppy. She and her sister were about to be drowned -- common practice in Romania, where animals are often viewed as disposable and scores of homeless dogs scratch out a life on the streets. Daphne was lucky. Her Romanian saviour works together with UK charity Barking Mad Dog Rescue, which found homes across Britain for more than 200 Romanian dogs in 2016. She and her sister (Pixel, opposite page) arrived in Guernsey last year at the age of four months. Daphne lives in Torteval with Siriol Evans and Jasper, a 9-year-old Jack Russell/Border Terrier cross brought here from the UK by Guernsey Animal Aid in 2008. Daphne is very outgoing, standing on her hind legs like a meerkat with excitement when she sees other dogs, people and even scarecrows on her walks. Her favourite pastime is barking at passers-by from the front window. Daphne relishes every morsel of food that has ever been offered to her, and spins in circles with joy at mealtimes, which include fresh-cooked chicken and rice mixed with kibbles. She likes squeaky toys and chewy toys but her number one playtime activity is roughhousing with Jasper. She also loves snuggling into soft blankets for a nap. Daphne’s dislikes? Baths and fireworks.

Puppy Love... Adopting Romanian Rescue Dogs Dog lovers seeking to adopt a rescue dog are increasingly looking toward Romania as awareness of the homeless dog situation there increases, and Guernsey is no exception. Life is Policies regime leading crisis.
hard for dogs in Romania. dating back to the Ceauceşcu displaced people and dogs, to a canine overpopulation
Interested in adopting? It works like this: UK and Guernsey charities partner with Romanian rescuers to save dogs from the streets and dog pounds. The best groups also work with local communities on spay/neuter projects and humane education, to help remedy overpopulation long-term. Once rescued, dogs are vet-checked , blood-tested, vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, personality-tested, microchipped and issued pet passports. They are temporarily housed in charity-sponsored Romanian shelters while their photos and descriptions are posted on Facebook by groups such as Barking Mad Dog Rescue in the UK and Guernsey Friends of Dog Rescue & Rehoming, headed by local veterinarian Jan Wright. Potential adopters are screened for suitability, a process that includes in-person interviews by experienced pet home-checkers. Romanian rescue dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and ages, from puppies to seniors. They are most often crossbreeds, but some purebreds are available.
HOPE
Robbie was rescued as a puppy near the Danube port city of Hârșova. He is a two-year-old Border Collie cross who loves people, other dogs, and food! He lives in St. Peter Port with Ali Muir and a German Shepherd named Isla. When guests arrive, Robbie shows off and spins around in circles with exuberance. He even “talks” when he gets excited. And he loves cuddles. Robbie likes the beach but remains sceptical about the sea -- it seems he is trying to herd other dogs out of the water when they go swimming. Ali describes Robbie as “the perfect dog.” She says, “I was ready to deal with lots of issues when he arrived, but he had none. He was calm, housetrained and played well with other dogs.” She found him through Guernsey Friends of Dog Rescue & Rehoming.

PIXEL Pixel is Daphne’s sister (opposite page). Like Daphne, she was adopted through Barking Mad Dog Rescue in the UK. She is the bigger of the two sisters, and makes a point of reminding Daphne of that fact every time they meet up for walks! Pixel lives in St. Martins with Emma Cunningham, her daughter Georgia and son Bob. She adores (and bosses around) her larger canine housemate Pablo, a 2-yearold GSPCA rescue dog. “She has a fantastic life,” says Emma, “has so much love to give and is great company.” Pixel is swift and incredibly agile, scaling near vertical banks with ease and tearing across the beach! Pixel sometimes rolls in stinky things on off-lead cliff walks, and very much dislikes the inevitable bath that follows. She doesn’t think much of tumble dryer noise either. Pixel had a DNA test done, which showed that she is a real “Heinz 57” Romanian mix, with Border Terrier and Chihuahua genes among others.
Hope was seen being thrown out of a car on the motorway leading to Bucharest Airport, along with another dog thought to be her daughter. Fortunately, both dogs survived and were picked up by a rescuer. “She is very friendly and follows you everywhere - including if she is fast asleep in the lounge and you get up to go to the kitchen!” say her owners Jez and Rachel de Carteret. She is so full of beans that she hardly ever walks, instead choosing to trot and run. Still, she coexists peacefully with her furry housemate, an indoor rabbit. She is thought to be a Chihuahua/ Jack Russell Terrier cross. Hope is four years old. Jez and Rachel intentionally adopted an adult rescue dog, which typically garner fewer adoption applications than puppies. They are so pleased with Hope that they are now in the process of adopting their second dog through Guernsey Friends of Dog Rescue & Rehoming.

COMMUNITY NEWS A selection of community news, charitable activities and local events from within the Bailiwick.
GROW LIMITED CHOSEN AS AFM’S CHARITABLE PARTNER FOR 2017 The facilities management company launched its search for a charity to support in October of last year. After studying dozens of applications, staff chose GROW, Guernsey’s sheltered workshop for people with a learning disability. ‘GROW does an incredible job for a number of people with learning disabilities and we want to be able to help raise their profile in the community,’ said Karen Girdlestone, AFM’s commercial manager. ‘When you see GROW from the road you wouldn’t believe what goes on behind the scenes. As well as growing and selling bedding plants, they grow their own vegetables and have a carpentry workshop, creating benches and planters. AFM is looking forward to working with GROW to help with fundraising, using our staff’s professionalism, experience and manpower to provide practical support, and we will also have the charity’s name put onto the backs of our vehicles throughout the year.’
Darren Brehaut, operations manager at GROW, added: ‘It’s fantastic that AFM have thought of us. We are always trying to make the best use of any money we receive to make things better for the guys, so it’s great that AFM are coming on board and helping us out.’ Patrick Palmer, chair of GROW Ltd, added: ‘It’s a constant struggle to keep the charity on an even keel, so AFM’s association is very much valued. It’s so important to continue to raise awareness of GROW. We have huge development plans, to replace all the greenhouses and create a large education project.’ Last year, AFM partnered with Riding for the Disabled Guernsey and raised more than £1,300 through dress down days and other fundraising events. The company also invested £1,000 to enable the charity to buy new riding helmets. Throughout the year, staff helped out as lead reign walkers and they also created colourful dressage markers which the children enjoyed using.
ONLY FOOLS AND DONKEYS AT LE RONDIN SCHOOL Only Fools and Donkeys held an ‘Afternoon of Christmas’ on Sunday 18 December with music from Bel Canto, Le Rondin School choir and the OF&D Choir with the audience joining in with a number of Christmas carols. The majority of the audience was invited from the charities OF&D has supported over the six years since they were founded including Le Rondin School, Guernsey Sports Association for the Disabled, Active and Headway who were joined by members of Age Concern and the Pensioners Association and residents of the Cheshire Home and Chateau de Village. “We saw the concert as a way to give something back to the community for all the support they have given us over the years which has enabled us to raise over £140,000 to date. We wanted the concert to be free to attend to give everyone the opportunity to join us at what can be a difficult and lonely time for many,” said Ray Smart, co-founder of OF&D. “It has been a great afternoon that has really got everyone into the festive spirit with the wonderful music from all the choirs, everyone joining in with the carols and a visit from Father Christmas. We are hoping this will become an annual event and have a date pencilled in for 2017!” added Mike Marshall, co-founder of OF&D.

OUR HERO OF THE MONTH IS...
CHRIS BALE Words Samata Russell Image Lauren Hunt Writing the Hero of the Month feature is an enviable task. It involves meeting with people within our community who are living courageously, following their dreams and passions and making a positive change to the world. This month, I have the privilege of meeting Chris Bale. Lots of phrases come to mind when describing Chris – ‘gentle giant,’’heart of gold’ or even ‘heart on his sleeve,’ would all fit nicely for the man who is a genuine carer of all things - from troubled children and teens to the natural world and wildlife. ‘I don’t think I’m much of a hero really,’ says Chris, looking a bit baffled at the accolade. But I beg to differ. Chris’s parents were foster carers, so Chris shared his parents with more than 74 other children. ‘I’m not going to lie, it could be horrendous at times. My house was never quiet and there were difficult moments but essentially my parents are my heroes. They showed those children so much love and care, like they would never have experienced before. I learned a lot from watching them and growing up with so many foster brothers and sisters,’ said Chris. It seemed natural to him to follow in his parents footsteps and become a carer for children by profession. At 17 he was volunteering for the Outreach Service, collecting children from their homes and taking them out to burn off energy, have a swim and a good meal. After college in the US, he returned to the island and worked with adolescents in residential
care at Greenfields (Le Carrefour). ‘I think growing up the way I did gave me a higher level of tolerance for some of the behaviours you encounter in the job and also a sixth sense about when to push something and when to let it go. If you’re going to pick a young person up on every 'little thing' then you’re never going to get to the heart of the big issue and allow that trust to develop,’ said Chris.
positive as it has changed the whole direction of my life,’ he added. Chris is focusing now on his other passion – wildlife photography. He and his wife have opened a shop on Mill Street called the Bird Box where they are showcasing some of Chris’s work. Supporting the natural world is top of his mind and he has recently purchased a lease hold for a lake and nature reserve next to Perelle.
‘I loved being a role model, able to give encouragement to the young people and help them reach their potential, but it wasn't just me. It takes a village to raise a child and there were and still are many wonderful people working in caring. At the end of the day though, it is up to each child. They are the real heroes doing the real work,’ he added.
‘In Jersey and Alderney they are a lot better at protecting their wildlife, we are years behind. My vision is to create a space where animals and wildlife can flourish, where people can enjoy being cocooned in a kind of wilderness. It would also be a place for education as we are planning to invite schools and other groups,’ said Chris.
Chris spent 20 years working in service of others. He has supported adults with learning disabilities, profoundly autistic children and managed The Salvation Army Community Centre as well as the role he continually returned to, residential care for adolescents.
Though his focus has changed, the world of caring is still very much present.
But in 2016, after the loss of his father and changes within the health system, Chris had what he says was a kind of break down. His confidence in the setting and system that he knew best had gone and without it he felt he'd no longer be the rock that people held on to. His anxiety about this was impacting his own family life and Chris knew something would have to give. ‘It was a break down/spiritual awakening, where I had to deal with a lot of emotions I hadn't processed – grieving for my dad especially. It was painful but ultimately

‘Youngsters I cared for still come into the shop for a chat or advice, I’m taking some on for work experience too. So it never really ends. I am working with schools on their project weeks and scout groups so there will be plenty of young folks to help keep me young for a while yet,’ says Chris. ‘Where I come from is basically the view that we should all look after each other – whether that’s caring for the birds and the ecosystems or the children on our streets. It’s a community and in recent years I feel we’ve lost a bit of that. I just try and be a good person and live with a moral compass,’ he added. Something tells me that things are only just starting for this ‘Hero of the Month’ and we should watch this space. Chris Bale has a lot more to give.

DLM ARCHITECTS Christmas Drinks Photography Chris George
In the run up to Christmas DLM Architects hosted a drinks party to celebrate their 5th birthday and the move to their newly converted warehouse studio on Pitronnerie Road. Not your run of the mill architects office, the studio showcases DLM’s creative design approach and the way they think about spaces a little differently. The large double height lobby, with overhead mezzanine, provided the perfect venue for an evening of drinks, music and conversation. A great spread of food was provided by James Ferguson at Cooked for a mixed guest list of industry professionals and clients. DLM would like to take the opportunity to thank all their clients, past and present, and the consultants and contractors that they work with, for making the past 5 years so successful and enjoyable.

The Origins, and Evolution, of
Valentine’s Day
I
Words Theo Leworthy
f the decidedly questionable history of Valentine’s Day is to be believed, there were three saints named Valentine in the Roman period, all of whom were martyred on February 14. Three seems like overkill (in this case literally, as well as figuratively) but it does leave the day’s origin pleasantly ambiguous: don’t like one story? Pick another. My own favourite explanation of how we came to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day is one of the less romantic ones. I suspect that’s a reflection of growing older and becoming a father – nowadays, when I say I want to try something unusual in the bedroom, I am talking about getting more than six hours sleep in a single night. The story goes like this: The year is 268 AD, the place: ancient Rome. The emperor, Claudius the Cruel (unsurprisingly, with a name like that, he will not turn out to be the hero of our tale) decides that bachelors make for more effective soldiers than married men. Henceforth, he bans marriage for young men, and decrees that only the unmarried can serve in the military. In Claudius’ defense, there is some logic to this: ancient Rome is known for its excesses of lust and violence; presumably, too much of the former made the latter seem less appealing. And, of course, when faced with the prospect of a noble death for Rome, you don’t want your centurion suddenly wondering whether that shifty herbert Aeneas from next door is planning to get his grubby mitts on your widow, kids, and military pension. That’s the kind of thinking that could see you sent home from the front with a conveniently timed dicky tummy. Nevertheless, keen military mind and statesmanlike prioritising aside, Claudius’ decision was not a popular one, because even in ancient Rome, everyone was a critic. One particular critic decided to take matters into his own hands: a young Christian named Valentine, who continued to marry young people in private ceremonies. This, of course, resulted in fewer helmeted pawns for Claudius to send out on imperial jollies. As a general rule, thwarting the violent endevours of a man known for
punching horses’ teeth out (that’s real – look it up) is never the wisest move. Valentine’s experience was not the exception to that rule. After a historically-speculative clubbing and beheading, Valentine got his last promotion: sainthood. The rest, as they say, is (ancient) history.
I’m not sure exactly what I like about this myth. I suspect it’s something to do with St. Valentine’s motivation. Having a daughter makes you instantly wary of romantic men at a cellular level, and that does rather diffuse the romance genre’s appeal. I can’t sit through Romeo and Juliet anymore without muttering “stupid children” (not even the really good Zeffirelli version from the 60s). Or perhaps fatherhood has nothing to do with it – perhaps romance is exclusively the province of the young, and when you become closer in age to Mr. Montague than to Romeo, it’s just less appealing than it used to be.
Possibly it’s the fact that romance, as opposed to love, is superficial. In Romeo and Juliet, the titular characters barely know each other. What would Juliet think of Romeo’s smelly feet? Would Romeo think her voice so sweet if it was directed, primarily, at nagging him over said camembert-scented extremities? Considerations like these never seem to feature much in romantic stories, but of course they should: we’re all human, and if we don’t have smelly feet, then we have an annoying voice, or a tendency to grunt while we eat, or morning breath that should come with a warning label. How much about a person can romantic love affirm if it leaves these things out?
Valentine, though, was not trying to get his end away with a woman he barely knew (here’s looking at you, Romeo). He was trying to help young people cement their love, settle down, and start families. If that’s romance, count me in. Of course, it’s not lost on me that he was also helping lads dodge the draft, effectively undermining the imperial machine with a Guevaralike act of subversion. Since we’ve already established that Claudius the horse-puncher was an unpleasant fellow, I have no problem with this. I suppose my choice of Valentine’s Day narrative is reflective of my own situation. After a decade together, my wife and I do not get to live in the illusory banality of Romeo and Juliet – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Ultimately, just as reality is always more interesting than fantasy, romance can never compete with love.

It’s time to embrace the skin you’re in- whatever your age!
s n e Te
If you’re a teenager like Kylie Jenner then now’s the time to get into good skincare habits which will set you up for life. Don’t be tempted to constantly change the products you’re using as this can cause sensitivity and result in breakouts.
Hormonal fluctuations may wreak havoc on your skin, causing acne or breakouts but it’s important not to strip your skin with harsh ingredients. If you suffer from acne, look out for products containing Salicylic Acid such as the cult La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo [+], £15.50, which can be applied in place of night cream to banish blemishes. Alternatively, for an indulgent treatment try Super Facialist by Una Brennan Salicylic Acid Anti-Blemish Pore Refining Clay Mask, £8.99, which helps to keep pores and skin clear.
20’S Those in their 20s, like Taylor Swift, may find that the combination of late nights, studying or trying to carve out a career can mean that good skincare is put on the back burner while you burn the candle at both ends. It’s important to maintain a good skincare regime to counteract the effects of a 20s lifestyle and also to protect your skin for the future. After all, as Cindy Crawford famously once said, “the face you have at age 25 is the face God gave you but the face you have after 50 is the face you earned”- so don’t skimp on that SPF moisturiser!
30’S
When it comes to exfoliating, many budget products can contain abrasives such as walnut or peach stone granules which can damage skin and should be avoided, as should environmentally harmful plastic microbeads. As an alternative, check out Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub, £7.99 but don’t overdo it- you should exfoliate a maximum of three times a week.
If you need to soothe skin that’s suffering the effects of a busy lifestyle, try Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask, £21.99, which is something of a wonder product as it helps to hydrate skin whilst also targeting breakouts thanks to the inclusion of antiseptic Manuka honey.
When you hit 25, start to incorporate an eye cream into your routine. We recommend Clinique Pep-Start Eye Cream, £17.60, which hydrates and brightens tired skin but also works well as a base for makeup, meaning that it won’t compromise that all-important concealer following a night out!
Maybe you’re putting in the hours at the office or perhaps you’re juggling life with a young family like Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge- either way, it’s easy to let your skincare regime slide in your 30s so keep things simple and invest in products with good quality ingredients which you can rely on. The Duchess of Cambridge is reportedly a fan of the Heaven Skincare range of products and treatments and Founder, celebrity facialist, Deborah Mitchell advises, “In your thirties, dehydration lines and facial expression lines start to appear and you need to keep moisture levels increased by drinking water and using a hyaluronic acid moisturiser like my Age Defiance”, from £8.33.
Hyaluronic Acid is a star ingredient which helps to combat the signs of dehydration. We’ve also been impressed with Indeed Laboratories’ Hydraluron Moisture Jelly, £24.99, whilst for those special events, we love GlamGlow YouthMud Mask, £39, to rejuvenate skin.

40’S
37
As skin ages, it starts to lose firmness and elasticity, resulting in fine lines becoming more visible, and there is likely to be a loss of definition around the jawline which those in their 40s, like Cameron Diaz, may notice.
Origins Plantscription Powerful Lifting Concentrate, £52, (launching this month) is described as a personal trainer for your face, helping to lift and sculpt- we’ve had a sneak preview and were impressed with the potent yet lightweight, plant based formula which gave visible results. Alternatively, try Korres Black Pine Serum, £39, which is suitable for all skin types.
50’S
Those in their 50s, like Michelle Pfeiffer, may notice that as moisture levels decline, the skin can take on a dull appearance. Restore that desirable youthful glow with a radiance boosting oil such as Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing Fine Line Face Oil, £53, which contains plant extracts and essential oils including African plum and raspberry seed oil to help plump skin and diminish the appearance of fine lines. We love that the indulgent scent means that it feels like a spa treatment in the comfort of your own home and what’s more, the action of facial massage will stimulate skin.
Aromatherapy Associates Anti-Ageing Fine Line Face Oil, £53
Deeper wrinkles may be visible and age spots may start to appear so look out for products which boost collagen and elastin production, to help plump and firm skin. For a wallet friendly option, check out Nurture Replenish Collagen Boosting Serum, £15.95, which helps to inhibit the breakdown of collagen in the skin whilst also boosting moisture and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Elemis are also introducing a new oil, Pro-Definition Facial Oil, £52 (available from March), which is specifically targeted at those in the 50+ age bracket. Noella Gabriel, CoFounder and Creator of Elemis Therapies explained, “Oil is a woman’s best friend. As the skin matures, oil is essential to keep it well moisturised and hydrated as it layers the lipid barrier, which is essentially the secret to healthy, well supported skin”.
65+
Those in their 60s, like Dame Helen Mirren, are likely to notice the impact of hormonal changes on the skin. This may result in skin appearing thin, tired and dehydrated, with reduced volume as Clarins’ Director of Scientific Communication, Caroline Debbasch explains, “In the five years following menopause, skin loses around 50% of thickness and collagen production falls by 30-35%.” Choose products that encourage the regeneration of skin as well as nourishing moisturisers to combat any uncomfortable dryness, such as Clarins Super Restorative Day, £58.30, and Night Cream, £61.70, which are impressively results driven.

sland girl abroad
Coming from a small island, it’s in my nature to want to explore anything that’s not on this one little rock. I booked a one way ticket to Bangkok for my first solo adventure, not knowing where it would take me and 16 months later, I had made my way through South East Asia, India and Sri Lanka and enjoyed every single minute of it. Next was a 2 year adventure in Australia, working remotely and exploring the outback, national parks and the beauty of the east coast. You can find out everything there is to know about the places I visited on my blog, with plenty of photo inspiration to get that ticket booked. It’s now nearly 2 years on since I returned home from Australia and after plenty of time spent catching up with friends and family and saving hard earned pennies, the next adventure is about to begin. Another one way ticket booked, this time to Cuba and onward to Central and South America. I hope I can inspire you to start your own journey, no matter where the destination may be.

Find yourself. Yoga with our expert Katie Brock -
This month I want you to choose your closest soul mate, the one who’s been there for you during all the ups and downs of your life, the person who has never ever left you and never will; your very own best friend… You! During our Yoga practice we begin to make the shift from looking externally for love, and take the time to understand that the real test of love begins within. Through the practice of Yoga we learn to treat ourselves with compassion, empathy and forgiveness, allowing a huge shift of self awareness to take place. This is by far the biggest gift we could ever offer ourselves. When we begin to practice Yoga, we often become aware of poor posture and our shoulders rotating inwards; this is usually caused by varying degrees of physical and/or emotional mis-alignments. Known as a “heart opening” yoga pose, Ustrasana can enable a sense of release and therefore allowing ourselves to become more open and emotionally balanced. Ustrasana also stretches the entire front of the body, the ankles, thighs and groin, abdomen, chest, heart, throat and hip flexors (psoas), whilst strengthening the back muscles and stimulating the organs of the abdomen. Therapeutic benefits also include reduction of fatigue, anxiety and menstrual discomfort.
Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Begin by kneeling upright with your knees hipdistance apart. Rotate your thighs inward and press your shins and the tops of your feet into the floor. Do not squeeze your buttocks.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Rest your hands on the back of your pelvis, with your fingers pointing to the floor. Lengthen your tailbone down toward the floor and widen the back of your pelvis.
Lean back, with your chin slightly tucked toward your chest. Beginners can stay here, keeping their hands on their back pelvis.
If you are comfortable here, you can take the pose even deeper. Reach back and hold onto each heel. Your palms should rest on your heels with your fingers pointing toward your toes and your thumbs holding the outside of each foot.
Keep your thighs perpendicular to the floor, with your hips directly over your knees. If it is difficult to grasp your heels without feeling compression in your low back, tuck your toes to elevate your heels. You can also rest your hands on yoga blocks placed to the outside of each foot.
Lift up through your pelvis, keeping your lower spine long. Turn your arms outward without squeezing your shoulder blades. Keep your head in a neutral position, or allow it to drop back without straining or crunching your neck. Hold for 30-60 seconds. To release, bring your hands back to your front hips. Inhale, lead with your heart, and lift your torso by pushing your hips down toward the floor. Your head should come up last. Rest in Child’s Pose (Balasana) or Corpse Pose (Savasana).

The Spirit of Guernsey... In the Beginning Katherine & Stephen Paine moved to Guernsey in 2006. Consummate foodies, veterans of the French food industry and blessed with large gardens and orchards, they quickly turned their attention to growing fruit and inventing recipes for making their own wine, cider, perry and liqueurs using artisan methods. At the encouragement of enthusiastic friends and family, they decided to take advantage of a hole in the 'locally made' market, obtained a liquor licence and began manufacturing a range of fruit liqueurs and spirits. In November 2012, they sold their first 'Haut Maison Guernsey' liqueurs, and received an enthusiastic reception from local consumers, visiting tourists and local retailers. #11. FEBRUARY 2017. Time Haut Maison liqueurs are made using the traditional artisan method of natural maceration, where handpicked fruits rest in vats of high-grade alcohol for periods ranging from weeks to months. Granted, a lesser-quality product could be made in almost an instant using commercial extracts, but it is the Paine's attention-todetail and uncompromising approach to quality that has led to Haut Maison’s success. Over the past 4 years, the Paines developed a core range of Damson Gin, Espresso Vodka, Raspberry Liqueur, Loganberry Liqueur and Crème de Cassis and these iconic liqueurs are now available in bars, eateries and stores island-wide. Going into 2017, under new ownership, Haut Maison will be carefully expanding its range, including a Summer Fruit Cup, a Guernsey-twist on a famous classic, launching in the Spring.
47
The Best Man for the Future So, near the end of 2016, when the Paines told James that they were considering retirement, he asked if he could continue their work. They could think of no person more enthusiastic or better qualified to take the business forward. James will continue to produce Haut Maison’s popular classics, whilst at the same time bringing new energy to the company. They look forward to his careful and definitely ‘tasteful’ creation of more Guernsey-inspired tipples.
A Fateful Meeting In the summer of 2013, the Paines hosted a charity event for Floral Guernsey in which they gave the public access to Haut Maison’s orchards, gardens, manufacturing room and a free tasting. It was there they first met James le Gallez: local entrepreneur and owner of mobile bar firm ‘Apéritif’. “Stephen & Katherine’s line of work utterly fascinated me. I was immediately captivated by the brand and started using Haut Maison liqueurs straight away and have done so ever since. I started incorporating their liqueurs into cocktails that I served at events and before long we were working hand-in-hand at many local events including the Beanjar Jamboree, Guernsey Cocktail Week, Seafront Sunday and the Guernsey International Food Festival.”
“Going into 2017, I can’t express my excitement to be taking Haut Maison forward and expanding its reach.” -
James Le Gallez - founder of Apéritif -

Agony Aunt LIFTSTYLE / AGONY.AUNT
Do you have an issue you want to get off your chest? Why not get in touch with our very own Agony Aunt, The BBC’s Jenny Kendall-Tobias.
Q: It’s been a while since I’ve fitted into the sexy underwear I used to wear to ‘impress’ on Valentine’s Day. I love the 14th of February as it brings back so many happy memories of my youth - Culture Club were number one with ‘Karma Chameleon’, if you recall? What should I wear this year to please my other half on the big day of romance? I take it from the Boy George reference that you are going back to your 1983 underwear selection? However, in that year Kajagoogoo and not Culture Club were number one on Valentine’s Day with their hit ‘Too Shy’ so perhaps your mind, as well as your night-time dress sense, is not as sharp as it used to be? (Quite how they made the top spot with lyrics like “You’re moving in circles, won’t you dilate” is utterly beyond me.) But ‘too shy’ should certainly be your mantra as, if you can no longer fit into the lingerie of yesteryear, then your other half most definitely won’t be impressed by rivers of agèd cellulite flowing over the top of your suspender belt if you do try to crowbar yourself into the ancient garb. So cover up and cover up well! Personally, I’d recommend thermal long johns in this weather. So stop dressing up in your wife’s clothes, man up and take her for an expensive dinner instead of thinking of parading around the bedchamber in outlandish grundies. It’s not seemly and it won’t make her love you any the more. And given your forgetful mental state at the moment, you won’t remember much about the evening anyway, least of all the bill, so stress not.
Q: Valentines has traditionally been a dangerous time of year for me. The floating candles in the bath burnt my chest hair off last year and the year before there was an unfortunate accident with a box of chocolates and a whisk - don’t ask. How can I ensure an injury-free day? Roses are red, violets are blue Get your chest waxed And don’t make a roux Find a nice partner Get yourself off that shelf And stop spending Valentine’s Day all by yourself!
#11. FEBRUARY 2017. THE EVOLVE ISSUE
Q. My boyfriends of years gone by were a constant disappointment to me when it came to their various Valentine’s Day ‘efforts’. What should I do this year to ensure I’m in for a good night? Most men are useless at doing anything romantic on February the 14th and in Guernsey they’re too tight anyway. I would therefore advise sitting in a bath with some floating candles, a box of chocolates and a whisk. Apparently, it’s not without its perils but has the potential to be much more fun than sitting in a packed eaterie with a load of drippy couples paying a small fortune for slow service and some love-themed dishes. There are some cracking ormering tides on the 11th, 12th and 13th of February. I can’t possibly be expected to plan a night out for Valentine’s Day. What’s a quick and cheap alternative? Cheese and chips on the North Plantation should do it. And if she drops them, you know you’re onto a winner!

ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station.
Words by Mike Huston Station Director for Island FM and Channel 103. Wow, so that was another Christmas and New Year we have enjoyed or in some cases survived! I am currently typing this from thirty seven thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean near the Canaries returning home after a New Year in the sun. Possibly like most I wonder how the time flew by just so quickly. It always seems to, especially when you are having fun. I love this time of year. Well at least the opportunity of starting a new year with a clean slate and with great intentions and aspirations for the year ahead. I do have to say now that those that know me will know that I do detest the dark and the cold that so often accompanies January and February. This time of year is a time to look ahead at the future with much optimism and energy. As a radio station we will be looking ahead at what we can improve on and what we can do differently. This year I will expect our online and digital side to grow. We will be looking to provide a more visual side to what we do as well as a more interactive element. This year is also going to see the exciting launch of our Island FM app which you can find in the App Store or
in iTunes. One of the things I am most excited about for 2017 is our Island FM cash shower. At the tail of end of 2016 we launched this and I am sure that many people will get to see this and use it at the various events and competitions. I am sure 2017 will hold some surprises in store for us and I guess those surprises are what makes life so interesting. I am looking forward to 2017 and I wish you a very happy New Year.

THE ‘SUPER’ IDEA
With much to offer and potential areas of development the Bridge seemed a suitable location to visit next. With land reclamation at Longue Hougue progressing steadily it provides a relatively realistic site for development. Now let’s make one thing completely clear; this is not a realistic proposition. Our forms aren’t ready to go off to the planning department and we’ve not consulted anyone on the legal, marine and environmental consequences. It’s a bit of fun!
Guernsey infrastructure, not a contentious issue is it? Our ‘What if’ experiment is back! Last year with no financial or legal boundaries we took to Belgrave Bay with Karl Dorfner of Dorfmeister Studios and put a Ferris wheel in the middle of it. This year we’ve headed north to The Bridge.
Guernsey is a mecca for those who’re interested in all things nautical. The island has a viberant boating scene and the local yacht clubs have a broad following. The return of the international power boat championships only reinforces the credibility of our waters. Recently we’ve also been graced with more and more super yachts and of course the annual visits of cruise ships. All of these visitors have plenty of money and it’s up to us to help them empty it on our shores!

Singapore; I could go on. Guernsey hasn’t yet taken full advantage of our ports and our cerebral mind dump of these pages goes some way to exploring that. Why the Bridge? The Bridge. The industrial heartland of Guernsey. Some of the largest wholesalers are located here, industrial fuels, supplies, freight and marine engineering. However some of the gems, quite literally, can be forgotten. From the business world Ray and Scott, internationally famed jewellers, furniture designers Bonsai, family estate agents Cranfords and the Coop to name but a few. The foundations for a bustling town are all there. Throw the development of Leale’s Yard into the mix and hey presto Monaco here we come! Another key element for choosing the bridge was the existing marina. Whilst most suitable for smaller vessels, we acknowledge that there’s much growth potential for Guernsey in the cruise ship and super yacht world. Facilitating the needs of these people and vessels has the potential to bring a whole new source of revenue to the island. Whilst
LIFESTYLE / FEATURE
not in our own graphics, facilities such as dry docks for super yachts and trams for transporting visitors around the island provide great tools to enhance experiences and offer add-on services. What did we include? The Bridge is classically known for having our very own power station located there. The tall chimneys and large turbines have kept the lights on for over a century and the nature of our energy supply is evolving (see our business pages). As this evolution unfolds and the world tries to kick the habit of fossil fuels, we wanted to incorporate some form of renewable energy. With one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, Guernsey’s well placed to become to tidal what Aberdeen is to oil; a centre of research and development. The significant difference being that clean, green energy prices tend not to fluctuate as much as oil! With Aberdeen hung up on oil and therefore looking much like a broken city (oil prices are less than half of what they were in summer of 2014 and food banks in high demand), Guernsey could take the opportunity to lead the charge on tidal renewables. To this end, within the piers reaching out to Oyster Point on Herm, tidal channels have been incorporated to
make the most of the daily tidal flows. What good is having the lights on if you’ve got nothing to eat? Karl has included a hotel with bars and restaurants on the southerly aspect with a sister restaurant on the northerly. Accommodation can be provided to visiting boat owners whilst cruise passengers can enjoy alfresco dining before hitting the shops around the bridge and the newly developed retail complex on the old Quayside site. Access to the shopping centre would be facilitated by a bridge over the marina; bringing a bridge back to The Bridge! The day I wrote this I had a meeting with a wise gent who’d said, and I paraphrase, “The distained architecture of today will be the classical architecture of tomorrow”. He couldn’t be more correct. We should be open to challenging architecture and development of the island; poor design will not survive but the classic and practical will. So turn the page, let your imagination run wild and let us know what you think on Facebook or write to us at info@ gsymedia.gg. If you’d rather snail mail, and we love the excitement of post as it rarely happens these days, you can find us at 16-18 Mansell Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey, GY1 1HP.

EVOLUTION
OF GAMING. Gaming is one of the most profitable entertainment industries in the world, generating $91 billion dollars worldwide in 2016. And for the first time, mobile gaming achieved the largest revenue as compared to PC and consoles. So it’s fair to say that gaming has become an integral part of our lives and culture. It’s come a long way since its humble beginnings over 70 years ago.
#11. FEBRUARY 2017. THE EVOLVE ISSUE
LIFESTYLE / TECH
It all started when Dr. Edward Condon, a nuclear physicist, unveiled the Nimatron at the New York World’s Fair in 1940. The machine allowed people to play the game Nim against it; approximately 50,000 had a go during the six months it was on display, with the computer winning more than 90% of the games. However, it took almost 30 years for the first game system designed for commercial home use to appear, when Ralph Baer and his team released the “Brown Box” in 1967. The console could be connected to a TV and allowed users to play several games, including ping pong and checkers. The “Brown Box” was licensed to Magnavox and the company released the console as the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, preceding Atari by a few months. The Odyssey failed to capture the public’s interest and didn’t sell well.

However, at the end of 1972 Atari released the arcade game Pong, and machines started to appear in bars and shopping centres around the world as their popularity exploded. Such was the interest, several companies started developing games for this new “arcade” industry. The seventies also saw the invention of the microprocessor, paving the way for personal computers and mass-produced games consoles. In 1977, Atari released the Atari VCS, later known as the Atari 2600. Initial take-up was slow until the company released Space Invaders for the console in 1980, and sales went through the roof. The surge of interest also lead to the creation of the gaming community; magazines started to appear to cater to this new demographic. In the early eighties, home computers such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and the Apple II started to gain a foothold. More powerful than the consoles, meaning more complex and interesting games, some could also be connected to other machines, paving the way for multiplayer gaming, now a huge part of the gaming community. In 1987, MidiMaze was released on the Atari

ST, a game which allowed up to 16 machines to be connected together. Although the game slowed horribly with more than four players at any one time, it was the precursor for networked gaming and the deathmatch, something which really took off in 1993 with the release of Doom. Doom brought about the birth of the ‘LAN Party’; gamers with differing computers could gather together and link their machines up over a Local Area Network and compete. This innovation can’t be underestimated; LANs, and later the internet, took multiplayer gaming to a whole new level. The fact that players with different machines could play together was nothing short of revolutionary and laid the groundwork for today’s largescale, connected gaming. Although the internet as we know it became part of the public domain in 1993, and despite various attempts by console makers to break into online gaming, it wasn’t until the release of the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 that the first real steps towards today’s online gaming experience were made. However, despite being the world’s first internet-ready console

2. MASS EF FECT ANDROMED A (it had a built-in 56K modem and web browser) that made internet gaming an integral part of its system, it bombed. At the time, accessing the internet was expensive and PC technology was advancing so rapidly that people didn’t see the need for a dedicated games console. Despite its failure, the Dreamcast paved the way for the next generation of consoles, such as the Xbox, which improved upon the Dreamcast’s pioneering online functionality. The noughties saw huge and rapid improvements in computer processing technology and internet speeds, capabilities and accessibility, and this was reflected in the consoles and games that were produced. This trend has continued, while at the same time the cost of the necessary technology, infrastructure and internet access has plummeted. These combined factors have made gaming accessible to billions of people; in 2015 it was estimated that at least 1.5 billion people with internet access play video games. The birth of the smartphone in 2007 represented another defining chapter in the evolution of gaming, bringing it to the forefront of popular culture. Mobile technology continues to advance at a rapid rate, and game publishers are using this technology and the ubiquity of the smartphone to reach an ever-widening demographic, with great success; as mentioned at the start of the article, mobile gaming now generates more revenue than console and PC. Gaming ‘s popularity shows no signs of abating, and 2017 could be the year that Virtual Reality (VR) really takes off. With the use of a headset, VR allows gamers to play in a fully immersive 3D environment. A number of titles are out this year, and the potential is huge. Add to this the sudden explosion of interest in Artificial Intelligence (Amazon Alexa, Google Home etc.), the future looks very exciting. VR games that contain AI characters which will respond to your questions and commands in a natural manner are closer than you think. Watch this (virtual) space. Words by Paul Chapman

b Transformers is, essentially, a long running story about two factions of giant robots, each with an ‘altmode’ (or alternative mode – hence the name ‘Transformers’) locked in a brutal civil war for control of their home planet, Cybertron. Or at least, it used to be. Now, those factions are learning how to break bread with one another. And it’s all down to Guernseyman James Roberts. But first, some background… The Story So Far The Transformers franchise has taken its mechanized mayhem to comics, prose, cartoons, cinema, and computer games; but it started off as a collection of action figures. A cartoon and comic were licensed to popularise the gun-toting toys in the 80s, and other properties followed their lead. This might not sound like the ideal situation in which to instantiate an epic tale of good and evil that spans generations of fans and the known-universe, but a combination of strong characters and good writing (Simon Furman’s legendary 80s run on the Transformers UK comic book is particularly noteworthy) propelled the brand into top-toy-spot for most of my childhood. And, it seems, many of the childhoods since. According to Facebook, 100,000 people are discussing Transformers tonight. 95,750 are discussing Brexit. While Transformers started off as a property aimed squarely at kids who thought trucks and jets that could turn into laser-blasting robots were cool, the franchise has aged-up with its fans. Or at least, some parts of it have. Because Transformers is HUGE; it includes Michael Bay Hollywood blockbusters, popular videogames from industry titans Activision and Electronic Arts, and multiple comic book titles produced by IDW (the fourth-largest publisher of comic books in the U.S.). It is in this last area where the Cybertronian celebrities have mostobviously had the freedom to mature.
More Than Meets The Eye For the last five years, Transformers fans have been quietly absorbed by an ongoing comic book title, More Than Meets The Eye. It is, in every way, the story that grown up Transformers fans deserve. It’s won multiple awards, and collected plaudits from the critics. Reviewer Chris Sims at Comics Alliance, for example, called More Than Meets The Eye “the single best comic book on the stands.” Plenty of people agree with him: according to The Guardian, the title is “the buzziest of cult favourites,” and giant digital comics distributor Comixology described it as “one of the most LGBTQ-inclusive series in mainstream comics.” The title has also been in Comixology’s top 10 bestsellers for the last three years – a huge achievement, given that it’s competing against pretty much every mainstream comic on the planet.

The master storyteller behind this latest iteration of the giant robots possesses an ‘alt-mode’ of his own. But he doesn’t transform into a car or a jet plane… he transforms into Guernsey’s Director of Housing. If it’s surprising that a senior civil servant from Guernsey is moonlighting as a comics genius, and is responsible for (in the words of review site Blizzardwatch) the comic that “should become the template for what this franchise wants to be,” Roberts seems to take it in his stride. He’s surprisingly matter-of-fact about it, actually. It was the UK version of the Transformers comic that first sucked James (and myself) into the franchise way back in the 1980s, and his love of (rather more traditional) literature blossomed over the years. We’ve been drinking together for less than twenty minutes when he mentions Dostoyevsky. Other influences include the expected (comics guru Grant Morrison and Transformers pioneer Simon Furman) and the unexpected (Martin Amis, Morrissey). More interesting (sorry, James) than his day job or a list of his influences, though, is the world he’s built in More Than Meets The Eye. It’s a sprawling metropolis of ideas that, he admits, has no right to hang together as well as it does. It balances a depth and history to rival the work of the greatest world-builders with powerful character-driven narratives on a decidedly human scale. It mixes high-concept science fiction (time travel and quantum physics, anyone?) with poignant little tales about lost loves and unrealized ambitions that are often revealed as the true driving force behind the largest arcs of a story that literally spans the stars. This juxtaposition between the huge – 40 foot tall robots travelling to distant galaxies in search of pseudo-mythical heroes from their past – and the small (has Rewind fully committed to Chromedome, or is he still in love with Dominus Ambus!?) that gives More Than Meets The Eye its unique appeal. On one level, More Than Meets The Eye is little more than a great story. And it really is a great story, in the truest sense of the words. In a franchise where lazy writers always have the option to replace plot with action, Roberts has not once written a scene without meaning. Even the high-stakes fight towards the end of More Than Meets The Eye’s second season (yes, Roberts says there are ‘seasons’ and the third has just begun) is rooted firmly in service to the story. Observe: The formerly-Maniacal Megatron (an evil Decepticon that Roberts has recast as
a heroic Autobot – a socialist-gone-wrong with a bloody past, turned to pacifism) is forced into a battle to the death. The scene not only completes Megatron’s season two character arc; it reveals secret identities, removes long-standing pieces from the board, and explains the motivations of one of Roberts’ most fascinating minor characters. Oh, there’s some punching and explosions too, of course. More Than Meets The Eye is a genre splicing, funny, quirky book about the misfits of the Transformers’ universe. Roberts intentionally chose flawed characters – ‘losers’ as he affectionately describes them to me – to show just how human these giant lumps of shape-changing technology can be. The things that motivate his characters are the same things that motivate any of us. But now, More Than Meets The Eye is over. The Lost Light At The End of The Tunnel Well, officially over, but not actually. As in, it’s not called More Than Meets The Eye anymore. Roberts’ publisher, IDW, has renamed the book Transformers: Lost Light after the spaceship his ragtag crew jumps across the universe in. It’s a sensible name, and the company is hoping a new ‘first’ issue will serve as a great jumping on point for new readers (hint hint: you can buy it, and all the back issues on Amazon right now). But be aware, this title is actually the third (and possibly final, according to James) season of More Than Meets The Eye. An article like this one can’t even begin to scratch the surface of the rich tapestry that Roberts, along with MTMTE’s regular artist Alex Milne (now joined on Lost Light by the equally talented Jack Lawrence) and a small cohort of like minds, have brought into being. I haven’t even tried, for example, to explain the caste system on ancient Cybertron that proclaimed citizens’ worth to be a function of their ‘alt-modes’. Or the fact that Roberts – in what many would describe as a frighteningly bold move, although it doesn’t seem to phase him – has turned the Transformers into a homo-normative (“hetro-ab-normative?” he questions over a Guinness) society. I ask James if he thinks these things make the book ‘important’. He replies that he tries to not be pretentious enough to say ‘yes’ – but he hopes that some of his ideas stick around to become Transformers canon. As a long time reader and fan, it takes me a minute to process this. Because, of course, they already are. Transformers: The Lost Light and Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye are available on Amazon, Comixology, etc. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy – not because you want to support a local boy, not because you like the idea of giant robots. Just because you like a good story.

Battle of the bands
2017
Since its formation in 2013, Thirst w Music School has seen significant growth in it’s number of students and consequently now employs a team of 12 staff (11 teachers and 1 administrator). As well as teaching private lessons on a one to one basis in their professionally-equipped studios, Thirst teachers also offer support to music students in schools. Band mentoring sessions are available to support and encourage young musicians to work together and learn, among other things, about band dynamics, harmonies and stage performance skills. It was the development of these sessions which led to the concept of the annual Battle of the School Bands competition, the first of which took place in February 2016. Open to school years 7-11, the aim is to encourage young people to form bands with their peers, to practise hard and be able to perform three songs to the best of their ability at the main event some months later. Held in Beau Sejour’s theatre, the event gives young musicians the opportunity to perform in an authentic ‘gig’ environment with professional sound and lighting and in front of a very lively and enthusiastic 400 strong audience. A panel of four judges decides the winning band at the end of the evening. This year’s

event was held on 14th January and the judges were Radio Guernsey’s Jenny Kendall-Tobias, Russ Fossey from the Guernsey Arts Commission, Nick Mann from the Guernsey Press and Denise Stewart of Rossborough Insurance (who kindly sponsored this year’s event). The winning band was ‘Third Above’ from Les Beaucamps High School who walked away with £1000 to share between them as well as £500 for the music department at their school. PROPERTY / EXPERTISE
Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.
MOVING ON? So, as we enter a new year the question that we have been asked most is ‘are we over the worst of it?’ Firstly, looking back over the last year; 2016 saw a total of 716 properties conveyed which is 95 more than 2015. The last quarter of 2016 saw a total of 174 transactions and when compared to the same period for 2015 represents an increase of 3%. The median average house price (excluding flats) in 2016 was £435,516 and £461,950 in 2015. So based on this, transactions are up but average property price continued to drop. The outlook for 2017 looks more positive. We have been contacted by several Guernsey mortgage lenders who are looking to increase their book of business this year and they want to increase broker led introductions to help with this. This can only be good for the islands property market because more lenders keen to do more mortgages gives both brokers and our clients more options with regard to rates, criteria terms etc.

Their advice is clear, jargon-free and tailored to your individual circumstances.
There is also of course, the news that hit last week in that we have new lenders coming to the island and they will provide a 95% product. This is great news for borrowers, not only is there going to be an increased choice in lenders but the need to have a 10% deposit plus fees should now reduce to 5% plus fees. For an average first time buyer purchasing at £300,000 this means they need £15,000 less available to buy than previously.

Worth a view:
Modern Window Design Words Polly Tapper
A house without windows isn’t a home. But how much time have you spent thinking about the glass that clads your home? Most likely you haven’t really considered this part of your home, but as the Guernsey experts I spoke to suggest, there are some very good reasons to. Whilst you might not count yourself as a treehugger, being environmentally conscious also helps the back pocket, and cutting your energy expenses should be a key focus for all of us. Energy costs are unlikely to go down, and according to the Guernsey Expenditure Survey 2012-13, energy, fuel and housing accounts for more than a quarter of our expenses. Upgrading your windows to drive thermal efficiencies, that is, supporting a cool-insummer and a warm-in-winter environment can really help. But there are less transparent
benefits too, “the UV filter [in many materials] also protects your furniture from fading”, explained Jerry from Guernsey Trade Windows Ltd and there are added benefits from installing good quality windows, such as noise reduction. Jason, Director of Jason Hobbs Architectural Services Limited suggests there are other important considerations when looking at the use of windows in your home, “light is very important in design. The view is important, but light plays the biggest trick. The development of product now [in window design] gives us the ability to increase that [amount of light] and still provide the flexibility on the functional use of the building. In other words, you get the benefits of having more windows, but you don’t have to pay for it through huge energy bills.’’ One recent example that Ben, Director of Guernsey Trade Windows spoke about was a refurbishment of a conservatory for a customer, “it gave us a good feeling that we were able to help this customer get use again out of this space”. The customer hadn’t been able to use the conservatory because it was too hot in Summer and too cold in winter. By replacing the roof, they got the full function of the room back.

Another benefit of incorporating glass into your home is to maximise your home’s aspect. The view becomes a feature, almost like having an ever-changing artwork in your home. “This can be a real asset for your property and an important selling commodity”, says Jason. Windows can also enhance the feeling of space in your home and create more comfortable interior spaces, by providing natural light and ventilation (there’s no excuse not to make the most of the sea breeze in Guernsey!) It’s worthwhile to think about how the windows will also enhance and compliment the exterior of your property. An architect will be able to work with you to advise on suitable windows that will meet your desired look, and maybe even push the boundaries to create something unique just for you. Just keep in mind that any changes to your home’s windows must meet local building regulations and you will need planning permission from the Guernsey Development and Planning Authority. The development of glazing techniques and materials has come such a long way, and even traditional materials, such as wood are now being constructed with the intention to be durable, functional and still provide the desired aesthetic. Leading the way are the Scandinavians and Germans, according to Jason. “They are even doing air-tight properties and have units with very high efficiency”. Fortunately, the UK is not too far behind and many of these products are now being produced across the Channel to similar efficiency and quality standards. These days according to Guernsey Trade Windows Ltd, “good windows, if looked after, should last 20 to 25 years”. So what are some of the latest trends in window design? Both Jason and Jerry mentioned that coloured window frames, in particular grey and black, are hugely popular at the moment. According to them, the consumer is looking for a different look, something more striking than white window frames, and this can really complement the overall design of your home’s exterior. Another trend, particularly here in Guernsey and across in the UK, is to make the conservatory more permanent, and also more efficient by replacing the glass roof with a solid roof. This has the desired impact of increasing the thermal control of room and driving energy efficiency. So next time you think about renovating, extending or converting your home, don’t forget about your windows.

POWERING AN EVOLUTION Shut down your computer, get in the lift, leave the office, drive past the traffic lights, pop to the supermarket, scan your shopping not forgetting the frozen pizza for dinner, pay by card, head home on roads lit by street lights, arrive, switch on the lights, the central heating, the oven and the TV, load the washing machine and put your phone onto charge. All done in less than an hour and electricity has been essential to every element. Hard therefore to imagine that it was only 119 years ago that a Mr F Gripper was granted the concession to build and operate an electricity generating and distribution system in the island. Fast forward 100 years and Guernsey’s electricity supply had undergone a considerable evolution but it’s in the last two decades that we have seen significant developments as Guernsey Electricity focused on ensuring the island had a secure and stable power supply. The diesel engines at the Power Station were nearing the end of their life, there was a growing awareness of the detrimental effect on the environment that the traditional method of burning fossil fuels to create electricity was having and new, cheaper alternatives were being developed. And so in September 1996, the States approved the construction of an undersea power cable link through Jersey to France. The Channel Islands Electricity Grid Company Limited was formed in 1998 and two years later, in November 2000, Guernsey Electricity took its first units of electricity from the European Grid through the undersea cable. That original cable between Jersey and France, known as EDF1, has since been decommissioned but Normandie 2 and 3 now connect France to Jersey with GJ1 continuing to carry the European power from Jersey to Guernsey. Late last year, a 100MW cable known as Normandie 1 and costing £40m, was laid and is currently being commissioned. Once fully operational, N1 is expected to increase the island’s import capacity to more than 95% of its electricity requirements with 30% of imported power coming from hydroelectricity. But Guernsey Electricity is conscious that although there are three cables supplying power from France to Jersey, there is only one to carry it on to Guernsey.

‘Whilst we have only the one cable with which to import power, there will continue to be risks to delivering lower carbon supplies from Europe. This is why securing a direct power cable from France to the island is critical and a priority for us,’ said Guernsey Electricity chief executive officer Alan Bates. ‘Progress is being made but we are mindful of the cost, which would represent a significant proportion of the present value of Guernsey Electricity’s assets and therefore introduce additional overheads. For that reason, we must continually ascertain whether the investment remains affordable for customers and does not adversely impact the financial performance of the business.’
In September 2012, a medium-speed diesel engine arrived in the island, which weighed 376 tons, and measured 18m long, four metres wide and six metres high, making it the largest item ever delivered to the island. 2D, as it is known, has since been joined by 3D, which is due to be switched on in April, and both provide Guernsey Electricity with an effective back-up which can be operational far quicker whilst also being quieter, more efficient and produce fewer emissions compared to the older engines which are now being replaced. ‘There has been considerable change in a relatively short amount of time but I’m confident power generation will continue to evolve as there are further advancements in renewables and energy storage. The challenge for Guernsey Electricity is to balance importing power direct from France with ensuring that we have sufficient on-island generation for security, while at all times having the flexibility to take full advantage of future developments,’ said Mr Bates.
In addition, Guernsey Electricity is mandated by the States to ensure that it has sufficient on-island capacity to meet the island’s needs at their very highest level. ‘The capacity and reliability of our cable links to France are being strengthened with the installation of Normandie 1 but we have a commitment to the local community to provide them with security of supply, no matter what happens beyond our shores. That’s why a multimillion pound, long-term investment in our infrastructure is underway, which will not only meet the needs of the island now but well into the future,’ said Mr Bates. #11. Invest with Bob One of the most common misconceptions that I encounter when meeting new clients for the first time – pipped narrowly at the post by the idea that investors must have a large amount of money to invest – is that they must sign up to a single investment strategy, for life, and stick to it for better or worse. Sadly I think that this is a misunderstanding that the investment industry must be guilty of fuelling as it is very different to how other similar areas of life are perceived. When I buy a house, I do not commit to live in that particular house forever. As my family grows (or flies the nest), as my lifestyle or tastes change, I can move to a new house that better suits my needs. The same is true when I buy a car, or go on holiday – I am under no obligation to go back to the same destination forever more; although us humans do tend to be creatures of habit! Investment strategy selection should be flexible and provide you with the option to change as your circumstances change. To give a simplified example, an 18 year old looking to save a nest egg for their future may have a long time frame and can therefore tolerate a bit more volatility along the way. Their focus may be just to grow the value of their investment and the funds may perhaps be added to as and when. As said 18 year old ages, their focus may change – for instance they may now be considering how to pay for their children’s education or looking to pay down a mortgage. This, in turn, will be different from their objectives as they age further and look towards drawing down on a pension, or perhaps supplementing their income to assist with day to day expenses – at this point their tolerance for capital volatility may have
BOB TANNAHILL, Ravenscroft Investment Management
reduced as their investment time frame has shrunk. In this very simple illustration, the client’s objectives have evolved and an investment strategy that suited at the time of initial investment would almost certainly not achieve their objectives at all of the different stages of their life. A similar and connected question arises when people are planning for their succession. ‘What if my children have different objectives to mine?’ ‘Will the process of amending be simple for them?’ ‘I don’t want them to be stuck in a complex situation that they don’t understand’. More and more I find people to be increasingly proactive about their estate planning and keen to leave matters in order for their loved ones. Of course, the last thing that one wants is to leave a maze of complexity for relations to unwind at an already difficult time. At Ravenscroft Investment Management our primary job is to understand our clients’ objectives and ensure that these are achieved via our investment selection. We are acutely aware that people’s circumstances change and we aim to make switching between investment strategies simple and inexpensive. As we often remind our investors... it’s your hard earned money and it needs to work for you!
Investment strategy selection should be flexible and provide you with the option to change as your circumstances change.
If you want to discuss investing with Ravenscroft Investment Management, then please feel free to call a member of our team on 732769.

28 LOCAL CHARITIES TO RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE 20TH SAFFERY ROTARY WALK A record number of charities have been chosen to receive funds from the 20th Saffery Rotary Walk this year. The walk’s organising committee, made up of representatives from the Rotary Club and sponsor Saffery Champness, had the difficult task of selecting which applications would benefit from the overall funds raised. After receiving 41 applications, the committee chose 28 local community projects to receive money raised by walkers who will participate in Guernsey’s only around-the-island walk. Simon Milsted, chair of the walk’s organising committee, said: “Every year the impact that the Saffery Rotary Walk has on the local community increases as we support more and more organisations that provide important services for islanders. “Our focus now is to inspire the walkers to raise as much money as possible for the 28 selected charities, whether completing the full 39 miles or a section of it as a relay team. We are committed to making the 20th walk our best year yet.” The Saffery Rotary Walk is one of Guernsey’s largest annual charity fundraising events and the only roundisland walk which this year takes place on Saturday 3 June. This is the fourth year that sponsor Saffery Champness has supported the walk and the firm is committed to assisting the Saffery Rotary Walk committee. Saffery Champness is celebrating its 40th anniversary in the island this year and is pleased that this coincides with the 20th anniversary of the walk.
GTA UNIVERSITY CENTRE OFFERS FREE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Two aspiring directors in the charitable sector will benefit from expert training and development, thanks to an initiative from the GTA University Centre and the Guernsey Community Foundation. The GTA recognises the increasingly important role of the charitable sector and the need to upskill directors who are typically volunteers. The GTA will give two directors in the charitable sector a place on its Institute of Directors (IoD) Introductory Certificate in Board Readiness programme, which is designed to prepare them for life in the boardroom. The Community Foundation will facilitate the selection of suitable candidates from the charitable sector to receive these free places. ‘We recognise there is an ongoing need to support the development of local directors in the boardroom, across all industry sectors. In particular, we are keen to support organisations working in the charitable sector, who contribute enormously to the island, by providing access to quality training,’ said GTA programme manager, Paula Williams, who worked with the IoD to establish the course. Sadie Siviter de Paucar, from the Guernsey Community Foundation, added: ‘This is a

fantastic opportunity for two people from within the charitable sector to receive top level training from experts in their field. Quite often a charity will have board members who have not had a vast amount of experience. So this offer from GTA University Centre is one that will really help the sector.’ The programme, comprises two full days and two half-days. A two-day workshop brings to life key issues that boardrooms face today and provides the necessary skills, knowledge and support to be a success. This is followed up by two half-day director mindset workshops, delivered by Chris Atkinson, an executive coach, through the GTA’s new Coaching Centre. Mr Atkinson, who has a passion for executive team development and coaching business leaders, was formerly a vice president of Microsoft. He moved to Guernsey with his wife and four daughters in 2013 after retiring from Microsoft. The next IoD Introductory Certificate in Board Readiness programme starts on 30 January. For more information about joining the programme, from any sector, go to www.gta.gg or call Paula Williams on 732861.

GET is a relatively new charity having been formed in 2015 following the takeover of a States of Guernsey-run service, Interwork Services. GET’s objective is to create employment opportunities for disabled people and to assist those with long-term health conditions and disabilities to prepare for, find, and maintain work in Guernsey.
During 2016, GET supported 69 disabled people into employment and now have an active caseload of around 180 disabled people who are either being supported at work or are being assisted to find a job. Manager at Guernsey Employment Trust, Nikki Ioannou-Droushiotis, said: “Barclays’ funding has allowed us to appoint someone to this role. We are confident they will have a positive impact during the year and will secure employment or work experience opportunities for many individuals. “We very much appreciate the support of Barclays and look forward to working in partnership with them in the future.” Chair of Barclays’ charity committee, Emma Caseby, said: “Barclays is committed to building a successful business that is centred around the inclusive prosperity of current and future generations. The Barclays Shared Growth Ambition focuses on helping people develop the vital skills they need to get into work which is why we are collaborating with GET to provide further access to employment for local individuals.
The service is designed to address the employment needs of not only people with disabilities but also to provide advice and guidance on good practice to local businesses when recruiting and retaining disabled staff.
“We are delighted to be funding an employment support officer who will allow more disabled islanders to have access to the services that the Guernsey Employment Trust offers.”
GET provides a range of activities and services to over 160 disabled people; these include a supported employment team, a
Barclays’ previous charity partners have included Action for Children and the Guernsey Sports Commission.

SHAREHOLDERS RATIFY SALE OF RONEZ IN £45M DEAL Ronez in the Channel Islands has been officially acquired by SigmaRoc in a reverse takeover deal which secures all jobs under the existing management team. The proposed acquisition was notified to the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in December and shareholders voted to accept the deal at an extraordinary general meeting in Guernsey on Tuesday; trading began on AIM today. Ronez, formerly owned by Aggregate Industries, supplies construction materials and services from St John’s Quarry in Jersey and Les Vardes Quarry and Vale Castle in Guernsey. The wellknown local business also undertakes public and private asphalt surfacing and maintenance in both islands. The deal was listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange (as of 5 January, 2017) with a dual listing on the Channel Islands Stock Exchange (CISE) expected later this year. It was the fifth largest initial public offering to be announced on AIM in 2016 and the first to complete in 2017. SigmaRoc chief executive officer, Max Vermorken, said: “The acquisition involves a significant proportion of Channel Islands investors; we now have a great cornerstone asset that will provide us with the platform from which to grow our business further while generating cash flow.” “Ronez is renowned for the quality of the products and services it delivers to the islands and we believe the new independent ownership structure will allow the business to flourish and continue its long and impressive history. SigmaRoc’s board looks forward to working with the Ronez management team to ensure a smooth ownership transition towards our new, successful joint history.” Ronez managing director, Mike Osborne, said: “SigmaRoc’s acquisition of Ronez is great for the business and its staff; the investment provides a bright future for our 73 staff in Guernsey and 76 in Jersey. “We will be retaining all staff and management and we’re committed to providing the excellent levels of service our customers and residents of both islands expect.”

David Cherry
Group Managing Director of Cherry Godfrey What is it like to work for you? I do expect my pound of flesh and I can be a stickler for detail but in my defence I do give praise when it’s due.
How do you ensure your employees are happy?
As an island what should we do more of?
I give them at least one Sunday off a year and have been known to allow them a half day at Christmas.
Support local businesses, but the most important thing is to establish a regular ferry service between the Islands with sailings 4 or 5 times a day and step up our airline connectivity.
What do you as a company stand for?
What was your best personal mistake?
Great personal service and looking after our customers through the tough times as well as the good..
I failed to finance a company which went on to be real success because I thought it would fail.
How does your company contribute to island life? £50 million pounds worth of liquidity invested into the Island keeping the wheels of local businesses moving. We also support a large number of local charities and sports.

He said: “Since joining Skipton I have been keen to develop my skills set and when the opportunity to move to mortgage sales came up I jumped at it. Working in different roles in a company gives you a different perspective of how things fit for customers, and the training on offer at Skipton, both in the investment and mortgages roles, is excellent.

RBS INTERNATIONAL APPOINTS NEW HEAD OF FUNDS AS PART OF ITS GROWTH PLANS Peter Brown has been appointed Head of Funds at RBS International to drive the expansion of the bank’s offering to the alternative funds sector. Peter has more than 25 years’ experience in corporate and institutional banking, and most recently headed up the RBS Financial Institutions Group in the UK, which included the RBS funds banking business in London. Prior to that, he was one of the founding members of the RBS mid-market leveraged finance business, delivering multi-million-pound buyout transactions alongside key private equity sponsors. Peter now leads a funds banking team that supports more than 1,000 fund manager and fund administrator customers in the UK, Jersey and Guernsey. He is now expanding the business to support customers in Luxembourg, with a new banking licence for RBS International recently secured, and the branch expected to be operational in March 2017. Andrew McLaughlin, CEO, International, commented:
“Although there will be a lot to learn, I hope to be able to take my mortgage practice qualification later this year, as this will help me deliver the highest standards of advice to Skipton International clients.”
SKIPTON INTERNATIONAL ENHANCES MORTGAGE TEAM IN GUERNSEY Just six months after joining Skipton International as a Customer Adviser, Shane Konken is to begin training as a Mortgage Sales Associate with the company’s expanding mortgage team. Skipton International is one of Guernsey’s largest providers of residential mortgages. In addition to growing demand for its onisland mortgages, Skipton International has seen a steady rise in applications for UK buy-to-let mortgages, also administered from Guernsey. In the past three years, staff numbers have increased by over 50%, as demand for Skipton’s offshore savings products, and residential and expat mortgages, has grown. The Guernsey-registered bank has over £100 million on loan to British expats. Nigel Pascoe, Director of Lending, Skipton International, said: “As demand for our mortgages products, both locally and in the UK, expands, we need to keep growing our team. Although Shane comes from a non-financial background he is highly motivated to take his mortgage practice qualification within his first year. “High standards of personal customer service are at the heart of what we do, and Shane’s extensive experience in retail translate well into this new role.” Last year Skipton was named Guernsey Business of the Year at the Guernsey Awards for Achievement, along with Best Offshore Account Provider 2016 at the Moneyfacts Awards, a recognition of consistently competitive rates of interest for new and existing customers, and Skipton’s excellent customer service.

GENERALI TAKES PART IN THE UBUNTU CHALLENGE! Recently, nine adventurous men and women from Generali learnt the true meaning of ‘Ubuntu’ and have returned safely from a life-changing trip to Northern Ghana. Ubuntu means ‘I am, because we are' and it encompasses the idea of teamwork, collective ownership and compassion for others – all values that Team Generali experienced firsthand 5,000 miles away in Africa. The team’s objective was to learn more about the impact of Generali’s partnership with Afrikids and Alquity. Afrikids delivers award-winning projects that help some of the communities that Generali’s nine volunteers visited during the trip. Alquity’s mission is to transform how people invest and to achieve significant returns while creating a better, fairer world for all. They do this by investing in companies that care about the communities within which they operate and also by allocating up to 25% of their fee revenues back into these economies. A percentage of the investments Generali has made into the Alquity Africa Fund

has been supporting transformational projects on the continent and helping people lift themselves out of poverty. ‘Team Generali’ spent their first day in Ghana in Bolgatanga, the capital of the Northern region, learning about Afrikids’ works and how the Generali-AfrikidsAlquity partnership is making a real difference in Ghana. The team witnessed the impact of projects like the School of Night Rabbits, which was set up to get homeless children back into the education system and out of the never-ending cycle of long-term poverty. Sirigu Welcome As well as learning about the charity’s work first hand, the team spent three days living alongside host families in a remote village.
Nicky Shakerley from Generali Worldwide’s Guernsey explains how she was touched by the people she met: “I thought I was prepared but I wasn’t really. The heat and the food were particular challenges which I never really overcame. The people were a different matter. They were undoubted cash poor but rich in so many ways, ways which we have lost in our hectic and busy lives.
All nine volunteers have been profoundly touched by their experience of living in a culture and conditions that differ vastly from those that they enjoy at home. In Northern Ghana, 70% of the population lives on less than $1 per day. Team Generali and the Ubuntu Challenge raised over £10,000. This money will go directly to support Afrikids’ Opening Doors to Schools project. This initiative aims to improve basic education for children in 60 schools in the Talensi, Nabdam and Bolgatanga districts in the upper east region of Northern Ghana.
“The values of Ubuntu – teamwork, collective ownership and compassion - were brought home to me when I attended a committee meeting of around 70 men, women and children from the area.
The project has already touched the lives of over 25,000 children. Enrolment at schools has increased by 20%, completion and pass rates have also increased. From buying school uniforms to improving enrolment, retention and academic achievements, the project is already making a real difference.
“It was a three-hour affair on a Monday night. How many of us, after a long day of physical work, would then attend a long community meeting? Not many of us. They listened to each other, everyone had their say, they took it in turns, were polite, respectful and I can honestly say it was the epitome of democracy in action.” Rick Felbabel, also from the Guernsey office adds: “I’ve come to understand how impressive and important Afrikids’ work is, especially in the way that they connect with the community, with the real people on the ground, making sure that the money is used wisely and in a really sustainable way, improving people’s lives for the longterm.”

recently completed the construction and fit out of their own new studio within the bare shell of a warehouse at Pittronerie Road Industrial Estate. A mezzanine provides office and meeting space to the first floor, with a fully fitted workshop below for bespoke fabrication and storage for reclaimed materials as a resource for future client projects. The fitout itself serves as an example of the approach that DLM take towards design, showcasing a raw palette of natural and reclaimed materials. The workshop is concealed behind doors clad in old concrete shuttering boards, the stairs are lined in oak stripped during a recent demolition, and the kitchen from reclaimed bricks and planked local timber. The double height lobby and mezzanine are lit by the original airport lights salvaged from the runway upgrade, converted to low energy use and stripped back to the cast aluminium shell. Lightweight rafts have been constructed to integrate flush lighting with polished plaster giving the perception of heavy concrete slabs floating above the workspaces. The meeting room utilises the existing blockwork structure, with charred timber lining the ceiling and presentation wall. 2 fully glazed sides overlook the double height space, framed within a bespoke blackened steel frame that extends to the mezzanine handrail. Etched vinyl manifestation to the glazing also demonstrates useful regulation dimensions, construction sizes, door widths, furniture heights

etc. The meeting table itself has been fabricated from blackened steel trestles suspending 2 slabs of locally felled oak. Adjacent to this, the mezzanine provides an informal seating area enclosed by a copper infused polished plaster bookshelf, reflecting a diffused light over the resin floor. A single 4 meter wide pane of frameless glass slides smoothly into the wall cavity, allowing the office to open fully onto the mezzanine. In warmer months the double height roller door can be opened giving the whole studio an outdoor environment. Inside the office, the storage is banked along one side within custom built birch plywood joinery. A reclaimed timber screen conceals back of house computer equipment, leaving a clean and minimal open plan studio space. The nature of DLM Architects work demands an inspiring studio space different to the traditional office environment. Every single detail has been considered and fabricated with precision to allow each space to function as required. The robust palette of materials is honest to the industrial setting, but softened with the warmth of reclaimed timber and considered lighting.
