UPFRONT / EDITOR'S NOTE

NOTE

So… it’s June already. How on earth did that happen? Where did that half a year go?! Summer has finally arrived - my favourite season! I’m sure we can all agree that summer is when Guernsey really comes to life. The beautiful, picturesque scenery of this Island is what makes us stand out from everyone else. This is why this month’s theme is ‘Vibrant’. What’s more vibrant than Guernsey in the sunny months? Rolling waves, sandy beaches and beautiful cliff paths... In this month's edition, we look at what a vibrant little Island we are. Whether if be places, people or food - we've certainly got plenty of character running through us. We explore the ever growing trend that is vibrant hair colours (which I am a big, big fan of myself), the incredible tattoo artists at Black Star and you can't miss Jessamy's top vibrant destinations, which are all really a sight to behold! Don't forget to catch up with our Island girl abroad, Sarah, who's in the beautiful country of Costa Rica, where she has been snapping away capturing the amazing natural beauty through her lens. For all the beauty lovers - this month we have Astrid giving us the low down with what's hot in the world of make-up and fashion. All of this and, of course, so much more, you'll just have to open up and have a look for yourself! Happy Reading!

UPFRONT / VIBRANT

#15. JUNE 2017. THE VIBRANT ISSUE

UPFRONT / VIBRANT

But when was the last time you stopped thinking about yesterday, last year, tomorrow or next year and simply appreciated today. Did you spend this morning agonising over what you said to a colleague last Saturday night in the pub? Are you already planning your outfits for next Friday night with the girls or guys? Are you, like me, a perpetual list maker? I have lists for everything: food shopping, work tasks and even cheesecake recipes I want (have) to try. I even started a ‘100 things to do before I die’ list the other day. I’ve got lists coming out of here there and everywhere. It’s weird. And my desk looks like a volcano of paper that’s erupted too soon. It’s the Dante’s Peak of desks. “Pierce Brosnan, come in, over”? How can we all get out of our own heads and start living more vibrantly and in the present? Making a determined effort to focus on the here and now when you can, looking after your body and devoting quality time to your favourite things in life are a great place to start. Address your morning routine. When you wake up, do you grab your phone straight away? Gotcha! Start your day with no distractions and make it email free for at least 15 minutes. You’re probably not being paid to read Patricia from Communications’ email at 6.30am, so don’t.

Words Jessamy Baldwin The writer A.D. Posey famously said: “Life is a sea of vibrant colour. Jump in”. Sounds simple enough right? But it can be difficult to “jump” into the world when our minds are elsewhere. It’s so easy to get distracted by all the white noise that infiltrates everyday modern life. But, when we do take the time to step away from our computer screens, tear our eyes away from our phones and overt our gaze from the television, it’s clear to see the real world beats high definition, 3D or panoramic any day. I’m a sucker for a good movie marathon and some of my favourite parts of the day are when I’m writing at my laptop. Still, these technology centred experiences are only as good as the real life ones that inform them. If I didn’t get out and about in the world, I’d have no inspiration behind my stories and the words wouldn’t flow. Similarly, if I’d never had my heart broken into a million pieces, loved like there’s no tomorrow, laughed until my belly ached or embarrassed myself horrendously in front of a crowd, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate the complex characters in my favourite films. Would you? It’s real life, and it’s a “vibrant sea of colour” that drives us and makes (most of) us genuinely happy. If you’re a gaming addict who spends 8 hours of each day cooped up in your mum’s attic playing World of Warcraft, this one’s probably not for you babes. But then again, you’re probably not reading this. It’s the rest of you who are. So to all of you, when are you at your happiest? What gives you a buzz, a glow, a thrill? What makes you feel vibrant or, to put it simply, alive? We, as humans, have an annoying tendency to live in the past and future. We’re saturated by photos and videos on our news feeds that have already had their time slot in history. We love making 2, 5 or even 10 year plans. When will I get a house? When will I marry? When will I start my own business? We love to plan, plan, plan. Even if we act like we don’t.

For me, the absolute best way to feel present is to get outdoors or exercise. Now I’ve got a puppy, I’ve got no excuse not to tread the fields behind our house for at least 30 minutes a day. I can literally feel the tension seep away as I climb the grassy hills and look out over the Somerset hills. Ha, I sound like Enid Blyton. I even took a ginger beer the other day. In fact, studies have found that as little as 30 minutes per day of exercise can have dramatic positive effects on your overall health. Getting your body moving relieves stress, improves blood flow, sleep, mood, self-image and mental state. The only way to describe how you feel after a hike to a beautiful waterfall or even a jaunt in the local park… is vibrant. You have a glow. Eating and drinking the right things is also key to looking and feeling your best. Most of us feel so much better when we’re eating healthily. Aiming for the five fruit and veg per day quota is what I tend to work from. But don’t restrict yourself either. If you want a brownie or pizza, do it, just not every day. Inject vibrancy into your life by treating yourself and dedicating time to YOU. Try to do one thing for you every day, whether that’s reading your book, having a bath, listening to your favourite music whilst lying on the sofa or cooking your absolute favourite meal. The Cambridge Dictionary describes the word “vibrant” as energetic, exiting, bright, strong or full of enthusiasm. Sounds to me like a pretty perfect way to describe the attitude we should all have towards life. In the words of Gautama Buddha: “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create”. What I have come to learn is that a vibrant life can only be created by you and you alone. Someone with bad eyesight can’t see the “sea of vibrant colour” if they haven’t had the initiative to go to the opticians.

Meet Tigger

Many people will have suffered the discomfort of cystitis, the inflammation of the bladder. It is horrible and painful. Magnify it by TEN and you may start to appreciate what ‘Tigger’ was suffering from when he was brought to Isabelle Vets in March. ‘Tigger’ is usually a very fine, handsome and healthy, five year old cat who enjoys strutting his stuff around the Vale. One morning he was very down in the dumps and appeared in pain. He didn’t like handling and the owners thought that he was having problems going to the toilet. This was sudden and unusual as he normally was so well. They decided to play safe and took him down the Vets. The emergency vet, David Jeffery immediately felt a painful and distended bladder. The bladder was blocked. Not a drop of urine was being passed. This is a true emergency as once they have developed to this degree, back-pressure will rapidly lead to kidney failure. Vet, David, set in place a sequence of events to depressurise the bladder (cystocentesis) and provide pain relief, and he organised for the diagnostic team to safeguard ‘Tigger’s’ immediate position by placing an in-dwelling urinary catheter, undertaking urine analysis, blood analysis, radiographs and ultrasound of the bladder whilst increasing urinary flow with an intravenous drip. Although neutering of the male cat is a piece of essential social surgery, stopping smelling, spraying, fighting and other antisocial activities, it has other effects as well. Beneficially, the behavioural changes reduce disease and trauma. A negative, however (and there are very few), is that it makes the tube from the bladder through the penis (urethra) slightly more narrow than usual which increases the risk of a blockage which is what happened to ‘Tigger’. Blockage can occur for many reasons; infection, bladder stones, stress spasm, tumour etc. The blood results showed that the kidneys were under severe threat with raised levels of potentially toxic substances such as creatinine and urea which the kidney normally would excrete. The urine results showed haemorrhage through the bladder but there was no firm evidence of bladder stones, active infection or tumours. Intensive care was given to ‘Tigger’ for several days and slowly the kidney function improved, his appetite returned and he was able to urinate without a catheter.

Isabelle Vets Latest News Come and see the new Isabelle Vets L’Islet surgery We opened at the end of May and have lovely consulting facilities, great access and plentiful and easy car parking. We have several vets and qualified nurses on site to help, advise and care for your pets and we can undertake many procedures on the premises as well. The site is also home for the state of the art, ‘Computed Tomography (C.T.) unit’ which is linked to a specialist imaging centre in the UK to provide rapid and accurate diagnosis of many conditions that more routine procedures would find hard to diagnose. Our highly-trained operatives are there to help all pets in Guernsey. We have also built a hydrotherapy and rehabilitation centre. This wonderful, proactive way to get your pet back to health after injury or surgery, to help keep old arthritic dogs mobile, to reduce limb pain and to get fit dogs even fitter is worth coming to see and to discuss with our

What was the cause? Probably stress combined with environmental factors. What was that stress? A fight; chased by a dog; fell out of a tree? We will never know. He is now back to his usual marauding self, but the owner sensibly uses a very specific diet which controls urine acidity and mineral content and also has a calming agent built into the food to keep ‘Tigger’ chilled and happy! He is our Pet Hero for June because he survived where many would not have done so, he tolerated our interference and treatment and remained a good and lovely cat.

OUR HERO OF THE MONTH IS...

JACK HONEYBILL Words Samata Russell Image jess dookun

our hero this month is the man who brought us everything from million pound lotteries to town entertainment. Jack Honeybill recently stepped down from his fundraising efforts with Les Bourgs Hospice, a position he held for 23 years, but he shows no sign of stopping his pursuits in the name of community. 'I'm not really a retirement person,' says 74 year old Jack, 'I believe it's important to continue being active and giving back until ill health stops me from doing so. Hopefully I've still got another 20 years in me.' Jack's latest project is fundraising for restoration of the Little Chapel. Previously owned by the De La Salle Brothers, members of the order Brothers of the Christian Schools, the land upon which the Little Chapel is built has been gifted to the Little Chapel Foundation, which in turn has placed it in a trust for the community of Guernsey. It is estimated that some £500,000 will be needed to complete the renovations on this quirky bit of Guernsey heritage. 'I was asked to be part of the fundraising committee but we didn't want to get started until the conveyance had been concluded, for obvious reasons. I couldn't secure sponsorship or ask people to donate until everything was finalised,' says Jack. With everything in place, Jack has just launched a scheme for islanders to contribute £24 annually. 'It's similar to what we did with Friends of Les Bourgs,' says Jack. 'People sign up for an annual standing order and so we have regular secure contributions. Application forms can be found on our website www. thelittlechapel.gg.'

Though he has hung up his Les Bourgs hat, when I ask Jack what he feels his biggest achievement has been, he speaks immediately of the teamwork and success of that time. 'Particularly during the drive to raise £4 million for the new building, the committee always pulled together and supported each other. We tried to work with the same ethos that the amazing staff at Les Bourgs adhere to - one of caring for people, caring for each other,' says Jack. Jack orchestrated three £1 million lottery draws, which required leagues of volunteers to sell tickets at £300 each. His time working as a manager for Natwest Bank gave Jack the knowledge and connections to be able to administer the funds coming in. 'One time we sold all 5000 tickets, so that's £1.5 million. It's a huge sum of money to be responsible for. Most of the funds we redistributed in prize money, but we were able to raise £300,000 for the Les Bourgs appeal. Being part of the team that made the new building possible is definitely the thing that I am most proud of. It gives me a warm glow every time I drive past the site,' says Jack. When I ask him the secret to his fundraising success, he tells me that it's all about networking and not being too pushy. 'I am very fortunate in that I worked as a bank manager for almost thirty years at Natwest, which means I know lots of people who have the ability to give back financially to the community. What I find is that it's important to present information but not put too much pressure on people,' says Jack Jack's other hat is executive officer for the

#15. JUNE 2017. THE VIBRANT ISSUE

Town Centre Partnership and this role is a broad one. Jack can be found organising anything from buskers and music events to sea side benches and Festive lighting. 'My main remit is to fundraise and organize events throughout town. My mission is to draw people into the area, supporting the businesses, creating a sense of community and generally improving the brand of St Peter Port,' says Jack. This month there will be music and dance recitals playing at Candie Gardens every Sunday afternoon for people to sit and enjoy. Islanders can look forward to the Normandie Markets, sea front Sundays and Fresh Fridays because of Jack's work. Going forward, Jack would like to see a formal role created to be Town Centre Manager, which would be responsible for linking all the various agencies working in St Peter Port, such as the harbour, the douzaine, the market and Visit Guernsey. 'It would certainly take the pressure off the douzaine, which is run by volunteers mostly with day jobs,' says Jack. GSY Life is not the only organisation to recognise Jack's achievements as he was awarded the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award 2016 by the Guernsey Community Foundation. 'I'm not really one to bang my own drum, though it is nice to be recognised in this way. I just like getting on with these activities and I derive enjoyment in being of service,' says Jack. Anyone wishing to contribute either to The Little Chapel Foundation or The Town Centre Partnership should email Jack on jackhoneybill@hotmail.com.

DANCE SCHOOL B CREATIVE IS NOW A FULL-TIME BUSINESS Since launching dance school B Creative in 2010, Director Brandi Attewell has trained more than 100 street dancers – from four years of age to adults - and helped hundreds more people to get fitter with a variety of weekly Zumba® classes. Brandi’s classes have become so popular she has responded to demands to expand, converting Creative Dance into a Limited Company, B Creative Ltd, and concentrating on the business full time. ‘I have always had the desire to create and have a successful business in Dance and Fitness. Now feels like the right time,’ says Brandi. ‘It is such a privilege to be able to teach children, youths and adults to dance. Dancing of any style gives you energy, excitement, happiness, and generally creates a sense of community. Remember - ENERGY STARTS WITH YOU!’ Street Dance is a fantastic alternative to more traditional dance forms and its cool urban vibe has proved as popular with boys as it has with girls. Brandi has found that the fun, inclusive atmosphere of her classes does not only increase her students’ confidence in their dance and movement skills, but also has other positive effects: ‘It encourages and creates better behaviour by increasing emotional intelligence so we are better equipped to understand situations with other people.’ Street Dance isn’t just for children – Brandi runs classes for adults too, and hip hoppers of all ages have enjoyed putting on public performances throughout the year, including at the main Liberation Day celebrations in town and at the annual summer shows.

ISLANDS EXTENDS ITS SUPPORT OF GUERNSEY FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE Islands Insurance has extended its sponsorship of one of the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service’s key fire safety and prevention initiatives for the next two years. The enhanced deal will enable the Fire Service to increase the number of home fire safety visits it carries out and will fund the provision of free Aico smoke detectors to the public. Last year, the Fire Service carried out 224 home fire safety visits, but one of its service priorities is to focus on the fire safety needs of the most at-risk and vulnerable members of the community. On each visit they will install at least two smoke detectors and give advice on safety in the home as well as checking for potential problems that may be caused by domestic appliances or faulty wiring. Steve Wilkes (pictured left), Fire Safety Manager at Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service, said that properly installed and working smoke alarms had been proven to drastically reduce the risk of death or injury by giving early warning of fire, as well as limiting the potential damage caused to homes and property. “We are keen to continue installing as many free smoke alarms as we can and the support of Islands Insurance, who have tripled their existing sponsorship for the next two years, is central to us being able to do this,” he added. Karl Richards (centre), Commercial Business Manager at Islands, said they were committed to making Guernsey a safer island and were proud to be supporting such an important community safety initiative, which has seen thousands of smoke detectors installed across the Bailiwick since it was first introduced. “Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service already do a great job in promoting fire safety awareness and prevention and, with help from Islands, they’ll be able to assist even more people, and ensure islanders are kept safe at home, and at work,” said Mr Richards.

Brandi’s Zumba® classes are incredibly popular and, with four different styles – regular Zumba®, Zumba® Step, Zumba Sentao® and STRONG by Zumba™ – you can find the one you love the most or do all four! Brandi has continually gained new qualifications since launching B Creative and can now offer a Friday 6.30-7.30am STRONG by Zumba™ class. To find out more or to request a complimentary session of any of B Creative Ltd’s classes, go to www.bcreativedance.co.uk,email bcreative-dance@ hotmail.co.uk or call Brandi on 07839 254 115. Fitness has never been so much fun!

SCHOOLCHILDREN BRIGHTEN UP POWER STATION GROUNDS WITH NEW PLANTS TO ATTRACT WILDLIFE pupils from Vale School have helped brighten up the grounds of the island’s power station to support local wildlife. A variety of specially selected flowers, shrubs and trees, including cherry crab apple and holly, have been planted by the Hougue Jehannet lane that runs by the power station. The work forms part of a Guernsey Electricity project with local environmentalist Vic Froome from La Société Guernesiaise. ‘We started by making and fitting bird boxes for different species. The plants will produce fruit, seeds and pollen which attract insects such as butterflies and moths and increase the biodiversity. There are also many colours to brighten up everyone’s day,’ said Mr Froome. ‘There’s a very enthusiastic group at Guernsey Electricity taking this work forward led by Alex Herschel and Steve Holford. It’s fantastic that they are so keen to help us and by involving the children, we were able to teach them more about the importance of biodiversity.’ Guernsey Electricity communications manager Clare Packman said the company took its responsibilities to the local environment seriously. ‘The power station is one of the most industrial parts of the island, so we’re always keen to see how we can enhance the local environment to the benefit of our customers, neighbours, employees and wildlife,’ she said. ‘Vic Froome has been brilliant in supporting this project, and thank you to the children from Vale School for their hard work with the planting.’ Eleven-year-old Jodie Clark said: ‘It’s been really fun to be around the power station and to plant the flowers to bring the wildlife here.’

The project is part of a number of community initiatives which Guernsey Electricity has recently been involved with. Through its Community Fund, which was established in 2015 to support projects benefiting Vale and St Sampson’s residents, it has recently given financial support to the GO2 Charity Shop, St Mary & St Michael School and the 5th Guernsey Scout Group

Cruise passengers get a musical welcome this summer Photography Trevor Mahy cruise ship passengers will get a musical welcome as they set out to explore the streets of St Peter Port this summer, with help from retailer Waitrose and BATIF, Guernsey Post’s foreign exchange service. The cruise ship season will see more than 170,000 visitors come to the Island by the end of October. This sponsorship enables the Town Centre Partnership to pay acts to perform for three hours on days when there are over 3000 cruise passengers visiting Guernsey, which happens on 26 days throughout the 2017 season. The best of ‘Guernsey’s Got Talent’ will be on display for the cruise passengers; Mick Le Huray, James Dumbelton, Lydia Pugh and Chris Taylor are among the mixture of local musicians who will perform a variety of musical genres outside Pier 17 on the Albert Pier when the passengers arrive and depart throughout the season. Mick Le Huray is a longstanding member of the folk music scene in the Channel Islands and released his first solo album in the last year and James Dumbelton is known for teaching traditional folk music. Lydia Pugh enjoys tailoring voice to contemporary folk and jazz genres and Chris Taylor prefers using his acoustic guitar to play a range of genres including jazz, pop and blues.

Jack Honeybill, executive officer at the Town Centre Partnership, said: “Generous sponsorship like this allows us to showcase the amazing, local, musical talent we have to visitors and residents alike. The Town Centre Partnership works to promote and maintain the vitality and amenities of the Island, in particular focusing on the town of St Peter Port.” Ian Burdekin, Branch Manager of Waitrose Admiral Park, said: “The Island has so much musical talent to be proud of and showcasing this to the community and to those visiting the Island is very important. It’s a great way to welcome new visitors to the Island during cruise ship season and, you never know who might be on board the cruise ships – they could bring our musicians’ dreams to life!” Dawn Gallienne, Guernsey Post, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this initiative again this year. It’s a great opportunity to show off Guernsey’s musical talents and warmly welcome visitors to our Island.”

One the speakers, Simon Walker, head coach at Crowdfunder UK, spoke highly of the event and the Island; ‘What's happening on Guernsey, in association with the Dandelion Foundation, is ground breaking, world leading and totally inspirational. It's an honour to play a part in it by coming and speaking on your beautiful Island.’ The day concluded with the renowned ‘secret afterparty’. The party location is never revealed until party goers arrive at the venue. This year was particularly special as attendees were whisked off to Herm, where they were treated to Rocquettes cider on arrival followed by a delicious meal. Local band Clameur de Haro provided the entertainment, proving to be a massive hit as everyone was soon on their feet dancing away. They invited Tyler Edmonds, who spoke at TEDx, to join them onstage for a song much to everyone’s delight.

THE GIIA ANNUAL DINNER Photography chris george His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir Ian Corder and the President of the Policy & Resources Committee, Gavin St Pier were among the guests at the annual dinner of the Guernsey International Insurance Association (GIIA) which took place on Wednesday 3rd May 2017 at the Duke of Richmond Hotel. Members of the Association and their guests were entertained by Comedian and Impressionist Debra Stephenson. Debra has been described as “one of

the UK’s best loved and critically acclaimed impressionists, comedy performers, actresses and singers”. She is best known for her impressions of the likes of Davina McCall and Ann Robinson as well as acting in more serious roles like ‘Waterloo Road’. She was well received by the audience of 190 guests. In his first speech as the newly appointed Chairman of the Association, Derek Maddison said that GIIA’s primary purpose was “to ensure that Guernsey remains Europe’s leading offshore centre for insurance and alternative risk financing”. Over the last year, the industry had seen a net growth in licences of around 4%. He said there was a huge amount of pipeline activity and much effort was going into new fields and markets. Government moves to loosen housing and immigration policy to enable the employment of some outside talent were very welcome. Derek thanked all the Association Committee members who give up their free time to participate in the work of the Association. The event was generously supported by Barclays Bank and a cash draw on the evening raised £2,400 for the local charity Caritas.

Food festivals have become an important driver for local and visitor interest across the world and the past few years Taste Guernsey has seen a direct line between its food festival events and visitor numbers, so for 2017 Taste wanted to build upon its success and run more food festivals throughout the year. Taste Guernsey is planning to run a total of 4 mini festival weekends during 2017 all of which build towards the Guernsey Food Festival, that once again takes place over 10 days in September. This year’s dates for the calendar are: 13th-14th May - Locally Caught 10th-11th June - Locally Grown 5th-6th Aug - Locally Produced 19th-20th Aug - Locally Reared 16th-17th Sept - Big Guernsey Market 22nd-24th Sept – Guernsey Beer & Cider Festival A huge amount of preparation goes into running these events. Taste Guernsey is a nonprofit organisation registered in Guernsey which has a set purpose upon which it acts: “To enhance the Bailiwick of Guernsey by organising and supporting food and drink related events to showcase Guernsey’s producers, restaurants, along with other food and drink outlets, for the benefit of the local community and to improve the experience for people visiting Guernsey. To organise and promote a series of events annually to educate and inspire the community and visitors about Guernsey as a food and drink destination” Taste is run by a committee of volunteers from

the F&B industry, all of which give up their free time to make these events a success. Across the first festival weekend, the committee had worked with a variety of local businesses to put on a variety of events. It all started with live cooking demonstrations held at midday and then again at 2.30pm on the terrace at Moores Hotel, whereby Chefs Wesley and Theo prepared a trio of local crab. The day then ended with a food and fine wine pairing dinner held at Le Nautique The Sunday saw Taste Guernsey kick off the annual Seafront Sunday series with a theme ‘Locally Caught.’ For 2017, Taste Guernsey has grown from just a Sunday event to complete mini food festival weekends, which include producer tours, live cooking demonstrations and a themed dinner on the Saturday, all before the Seafront Sunday, which this year has a new look as well. Taste is now turning Crown Pier into a street food village, inviting, restaurateurs, chefs, producers, cafes, bar and kiosks to take a pitch and showcase their food. Amongst all this, and for the first time, Taste Guernsey are also licensing the pier and inviting Guernsey’s artisan drink producers, White Rock Brewery, Rocquette Cider, Wheadon’s Gin, Haut Maison and Apertif will all be permitted to sell.

In addition to the food stalls, Taste Guernsey opens the event up to a variety of local craft stalls which exhibit a variety of locally made items. One of the highlights of Taste’s seafront events is the live cooking demonstrations which take place throughout the day. Chefs from Hook, Le Nautqiue and the OGH hotel demonstrated some of their cooking techniques and showcased a variety of dishes. New for this year is Ready, Steady, Cook where 2 contestants are given a bag of produce and 30 minutes to get creative and come up with a dish of their choice which is then judged by the audience. A chef is on hand to help these contestants. For the day, Taste were very lucky to be joined by the Savoy in Jersey’s head chef Joe Baugh who then took the 2pm slot to showcase a fantastic dish called 'Taste of the Seaside' and consists of Edible Sand, Local Fish and Shellfish, Sea Lettuce, Sea Rosemary, Oyster Leaf, Buckler Sorrel, Spinach, Baby Leek, Jersey Royals and Sea Herb Mayonnaise. The event was a huge success with some great industry feedback, Taste’s next mini food festival weekend takes places over the weekend of the 5th/6th June with the theme locally grown. #15. JUNE 2017. often spend time at Camden markets, wondering around Cyber Dog, just soaking up all the neon colour. On my lunch breaks from the academy in Mayfair I’d go browse Vivian Westwood’s, or drool over Alexander McQueen’s avant-garde designs in Selfridges. London breaths creativity, ideas and colour! Sassoon’s taught me the craft, London sparked my imagination! Today my favorite source of inspiration is the world around us. It can come from anywhere… a cupcake in a shop window, a dream, a fair ground ride, film, art, fashion… even music can spark an idea. what advise do you have for someone who wants to try something different, but is a first time colour client?

when did your love of rainbows start? I have always been surrounded by rainbows. The day I was born there was a rainbow in the sky. As a child I had a giant rainbow painted on my ceiling. People thought it was something I would have grown out of, but I only get worse with age. I even got married in a rainbow wedding dress that I designed myself. The rainbow hair is just the tip of the iceberg! how did you colouring?

Pastels are the best way to experiment with zero commitment. Pastel colours such as dusty lavender or millennial pink will fade right back to blonde within two to four shampoos. They are also affordable and easy to do, just as you would have a toner after highlights or balayage, it only takes 5 minutes at the backwash. A great way to test the water before you dive in! what's the biggest misconception about rainbow hair? "Wait 'til you shampoo it - then the colours will go all muddy and wash out.” The truth is, the colours run into each other much less than you would expect. When you understand colour theory and placement, you can even use colour blending to your advantage. Following the proper home hair care routine also makes a massive difference. With all my colourful creations I give personal aftercare and maintenance advice. Just as a hand made designer garment comes with washing instructions, so do these unique hair designs. My clients have excellent long lasting results with beautiful transitions to pastel shades as it fades.

I’ve always loved to do hair, even before I trained. I knew I enjoyed being creative; I’d come top of my class in art and film, but I didn't want a job stuck behind a drawing board all day. I loved working with people. Then I was given the opportunity to go to Vidal Sassoon in London to train and it all just clicked. I had the honour to study with some of Sassoon’s top art directors, who where amazing to watch. My colour teacher used to affectionately call me Rainbow Bright. We also got to collaborate with London collage of fashion when Sassoon’s put on a hair show at Wella Studios. Seeing my work on the catwalk so early in my career was an amazing feeling.

is there such a thing as permanent alternative hair dye e.g. pink etc? Yes. However I find most of my clients prefer to have the flexibility to change their colours up at each appointment.

The only criteria for wearing colourful hair is confidence! My clientele ranges from teenagers to Grandmas, creative types to business people. Unlike natural colours, that need to work with a person’s complexion, vivid colours are more about incorporating my client’s sense of fashion and style. I tend to take cues from people's clothing and accessories, and tailor the colours to suit this rather than their skin type. Colourful hair is about self expression and having fun. I (Matt Burdett) opened the first Black Star in Mill Street in 2007, and within a year or so had taken on Nico Dray as my first apprentice, Nico's work progressed really quickly so Then in 2010, Francesca Allez moved over to Guernsey from Devon to apprentice with us and became the Islands first ever registered female tattoo artist. Things just got busier for us and various artists came and went, until in 2012, Nico left to set up his own studio (me and Nico are still great mates!) We carried on as a twosome for a while until Jen Lancely moved over from the U.K. to work with me and Frankie, Jen was already an established artist in the U.K. Adam Trump was the next apprentice to come on board, and at this point things started getting cramped in our tiny little Mill Street studio, Adam could only work when one of the artists wasn't at their station. Then I also took on Luke Gallie as an apprentice and things got hectic! It was almost 24/7 tattooing, we had to move, all the full time artists diaries were filling up at a rate of knots and the apprentices were improving at such a rapid rate that they would need their own stations very soon! Then last year, we took the plunge and, after a manic month of kitting out our studio in the Bordage, we moved and set up everything over one weekend. We are now the biggest studio in the Channel Islands, with artists to cater for every kind of style you could think of, new school, old school, realism, neo traditional, black and shade, colour, watercolour, dot work, tribal. Every tattoo we do is important, whether it be a back piece or a small piece of script.

MATT BURDETT I AM THE OWNER/FOUNDER OF BLACK STAR TATTOO. I HAVE BEEN TATTOOING FOR ABOUT 15 YEARS NOW. My favourite style is Neo Traditional and within that style I enjoy mixing it up - so I like doing black and shade, colour, a touch of realism, dot work and whatever else I feel brings something different to the piece. I will take on other styles though, as long as I get to have a certain amount of artistic licence. I tattoo mostly regulars so don't really tend to do the smaller tattoos. I like to go big with my work, sleeves, full backs, leg sleeves.

Because of our expansion, we needed another member of the team to deal with shop management, setting up and cleaning down and all other general day-to-day tattoo studio tasks, so Emmy Marley joined the team. Emmy will also be starting her apprenticeship this year. In my career, I have seen tattooing go from strength to strength and we just keep getting busier. Once again, a massive thank you to all of our customers old and new for keeping us so busy doing the work we love! If anybody wants to see more of our work we have hundreds of photos on our facebook page, just search for Black Star Tattoo Guernsey.

Francesca Allez

Who'd have thought after three years in college training to be a teacher/nursery nurse I'd end up here. I came to Guernsey 7 years ago to become the first female tattooist in the Channel Islands and made it. Matt accepted me and took me under his wing and, with his and Nico's guidance and inspiration, I was able to adapt to the new surroundings comfortably. Being a male dominated environment back then, I found my ground quite quickly as the lads made me feel comfortable from day one. My favourite style of work is black and shade, portrait and realism or the complete opposite of cartoon bright bold colours. However, I will happily adapt to any style and do my best to have my customers leave with a smile because that's the most important thing. Follow my journey through Instagram - FALLEZ89

Jen Lanceley

I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2006 with a BA (HONS) in Design and Animation, I then started a tattoo apprenticeship with a large studio in Stoke-on-Trent, alongside an MA in Design and Innovation. I have worked for a few studios throughout the Midlands and the Northwest of England before moving to Guernsey in 2013 I love big, bold, colourful tattoos. Colour-realism , CoverUps, Neo-traditional and New School Styles are my personal favourites, as character design has always been a long standing interest of mine. Cover-ups are a big part of my work load, I love transforming the drab and dreary into something new and exiting. When I'm not tattooing, I love to make and sculpt vinyl character models and have a growing collection of monsters. Instagram: Jen_tattoo

ADAM TRUMP

After graduating from the Illustration course at the Arts University Bournemouth, I started tattooing in August 2015. Since then, I have grown confident in tattooing, able to adapt to most styles and the broadly varying requests of customers. I mainly work on black and grey tattoos, however, very much enjoy colour tattooing when given the opportunity. I have a keen interest in the natural world, especially insects and other wildlife, so this often plays a part as the subjects of my designs. An obsession with detail also features heavily in the works I complete. With the tattoo world becoming exceedingly popular and diverse, I look forward to learning and growing in my craft and thank all my customers so far. Please take a look at my Instagram, Naturally_Inklined to see more of my work.

Luke Gallie

I'm Luke, I'm 29 and I'm an apprentice at black star. I got into tattooing because I wanted to do something expressive with my life. I like to tattoo anything from delicate black and shade work to bold full colour pieces. Small or big, detailed or simple, I'm always happy to talk through options with customers and then draw up a custom piece for them. I'm in my second year of being an apprentice and I'm starting to find my own style, as I said, I'm happy to tattoo any style but I do really enjoy crazy full colour neo traditional and new school pieces. I'm very thankful to Matt for giving me such a great opportunity and also my beautiful girlfriend for all her support. I love my job and I'm always happy to meet new customers, so come see me at the shop.

Costa Rica, a land of adventure, stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. I was joined by a friend from home so off we set, two island girls abroad, exploring a beautiful country. Costa Rica hosts more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity, and considering its landmass that’s a pretty impressive feat. This makes it one of the most popular hotspots for people traveling to Central America and rightly so. With beautiful mountain hikes, dense jungle explorations, stunning beaches, fantastic surfing and wildlife around every corner, Costa Rica is full of adventure and beauty, so much so you won’t know where to start especially with over 800km of coastline to explore. With its expanse of jungle and massive presence of wildlife it would be almost sinful not to experience one of the highlights of Costa Rica, Monteverde, a beautiful place to explore which is mos4t famous for its cloud forest and adventure tours, and rightly so. The walk through the jungle will lead you over suspension bridges dangling above the forest floor and suspending you in the canopy of trees. High above the basin you have the best view of Costa Rica’s impressive ecosystem which it is so famous for. As the afternoon clouds come rolling in, the canopy soon becomes engulfed in a thick cloud, the sounds of the surrounding wildlife starts to dull and an eerie mist comes rolling in enveloping the bridges. It’s almost magical how the mist silences the jungle, bringing with it a dewey presence that dampens everything it touches. As the afternoon mist rolls into night, the jungle comes alive again. Sign up to a night tour and be lead through the jungle by your guide who will point out all manner of wildlife from sloths to snakes, scorpions & tarantulas as big as your hand and toucans resting high in the tree tops. The trees are dripping from afternoon rains and the sound of frogs and bugs can be heard echoing in the shadows, a far cry from the vibrant birdsong filled jungle of the day.

holes and a raging waterfall surrounded by dense jungle, a sight in itself and a perfect spot to enjoy for a few hours.

If canopy walks and treetop hikes aren’t high enough on the adventure scale for you, you can try your hand at zip lining. Costa Rica offers the longest zip line in Latin America, with the furthest line stretching as far as 1590 metres across the forest canopy. Zipping through the jungle and out above the treetops is a breathtakingly unique experience, strapped securely onto the wire you’ll fly head first over the edge and into adventure. If your inner daredevil is still not satisfied, there’s also a bungee swing which will catapult you off the platform and into the trees below, a truly heart stopping challenge even for the bravest of souls.

Jungles and wildlife isn’t all Costa Rica is so famous for. Both the pacific and caribbean coasts offer beautiful beaches that stretch as far as Panama, here you’ll find both relaxation and something for the more intrepid travellers. The pacific coast is a perfect destination for those looking for a little more than a deck chair and a cocktail. Rugged beaches stretch for miles, lined with lush green palm trees. Waves roll in consistently, breaking along the shoreline and welcoming surfers from all around the world to taste a bit of the Pacific magic. Surf, suitable for beginners can be found along the coast too, lessons are readily available along with board hire so you can easily spend your day in the water enjoying the clean waves. If that’s not your thing then just sit back and relax, enjoy the cool breeze whispering through the palm trees and just take it all in.The sunsets in Costa Rica are beyond beautiful, the sky paints a palette of pinks and reds, puffy clouds soaking up the tones and making for a beautiful way to end the day.

La Fortuna, a quiet little town nestled in the shadow of a towering volcano and a short drive from lake Arenal offers some beautiful scenery. The thermal springs are the main draw to this town, you can spend the afternoon relaxing in natural springs heated by the nearby volcano, a mind-blowing concept but something that is well worth trying. There is plenty of adventure offered in this town but one of the best points to visit is waterfall Rio Fortuna, its a steep walk to the bottom but you’ll be rewarded with crystal clear swimming

ITALY Modelled on an Italian village, the bright facades and lush green surroundings of quaint portmeirion in Wales are well worth a peruse. Colourful tobermory, on the island of Mull in the inner Hebrides, is one of the prettiest ports in Scotland. Legend has it one of the Spanish Armada ships sank there in 1588 carrying gold bullion. The colourful Georgian terraced houses and hip harbourside area in bristol are a feast for the eyes.

ICELAND In springtime, the fields at the base of mount fuji erupt with hundreds of thousands of moss blooms, or "shibazakura", in varying shades of pink. Catching the blossom period in Japan should be on everyone’s bucket list.

While Venice is beautiful, romantic and scenic, the tiny island of Burano has some seriously photogenic, colourful treasures. Also visit postcard perfect vernazza. The island of procida is also full of candy-coloured houses that stand out from the azure Mediterranean.

UNITED KINGDOM You’ll want to get a bird’s eye view to take full advantage of all the colourful roofs of reykjavik. Head to the top of Hallgrímskirkja church to glimpse the vibrant urban landscape or try the Esjan hike to get a panoramic look at the city.

In line with this issue’s vibrant theme, I’ve rounded up 20 of the most vivid and beautiful places on the globe – and some are closer than you think. We all know it’s hard to beat the flower abundant St Peter Port, the glistening waters of Shell Beach and the lush vistas of the west coast cliffs, but it’s nice to explore further afield. From candy tinted neighbourhoods to rolling purple fields, if it’s colour you’re after, I’ve got you covered. So get browsing, booking and packing for your technicolour dream trip....

The dynamic city of stockholm is a collage of citrus orange buildings shining between clear blue water and bluer skies in the warmer months. In winter, fairy lights galore, powdery snow and warmly lit restaurants and bars make the city glow.

MOROCCO From June-August, the rolling lavender fields of provence teem with bright purple blooms as far as the eye can see. With the herbal scent of lavender in the air, quaint streets and spectacular coastlines, it’s easy to see why the bewitching region of Provence has charmed visitors for so long. In Autumn, the hills come alive with orange and gold hues.

CARIBBEAN Head to the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood in cape town which overlooks the city centre from Signal Hill. Lime green, fuchsia pink, baby blue and rich red homes dapple the hillside and the view of commanding Table Mountain behind isn’t bad either. One of the original hubs of Malay culture, Bo-Kaap today is one of the trendiest and most expensive neighbourhoods in the city.

Let your skin become your canvas and your makeup bag your paintbox as you embrace your artistic side with a kaleidoscope of colour this summer.

the eyes have it

Urban Decay are renowned in the beauty business for their richly pigmented, smooth and easily blendable eyeshadows. If you’re inspired to get creative with colour, look no further than the limited edition Full Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette (£43) which is a must-have for makeup mavens. It offers a rainbow of 21 shades including burgundy red, vibrant orange, sunshine yellow, lime green and cobalt blue, presented in easy-to-use ombre trios and including a handy matte white to enhance and black for creating smokey looks.

Play with colour and remember that makeup isn’t permanent so however you choose to try the trend, have fun with it!

Trend leaders, MAC, have also been inspired by colour in their limited edition “Fruity Juicy” collection. For those who find larger palettes overwhelming, the slimline Eyeshadow x6 Palettes (£25) are worth a look, not least because they boast stunning, collectible packaging which is emblazoned with a tropical fruit design. Choose from the cool toned “Love in the Glades” which combines green hues with wearable neutrals, or the warm “Oh My Banana” which features sunset shades in a range of finishes. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different tones as wearing bold colour around the eyes needn’t resemble an ‘80s throwback. Try washes of eyeshadow to complement your eye colour and for a more natural look, blend colour with a hint of brown eyeshadow. Coppery orange tones make blue eyes sparkle whilst red toned browns and burgundies enhance green eyes. Plums and purples make brown eyes pop, as do flashes of blue which works particularly well when applied as a graphic liner. The impressively budge-proof formula of BUXOM Hold The Line Waterproof Eyeliner in “Pick Me Up” (£14) is recommended, or for an affordable way to try out the trend, try Collection Glam Crystals Dazzling Gel Liner in “Le Freak” (£2.99). It contains glitter particles for added impact that works well for festivals or on younger skin for parties.

be cheeky

Adding a pop of vibrant colour to cheeks can help to create a youthful appearance instantly. When it comes to blusher, it’s difficult to beat the quality and rich pigmentation of those by cult makeup brand, Illamasqua. Check out Powder Blusher in “Thrust”, a magenta pink purple, or “Excite”, a terracotta orange red, both with matte finishes (£22). For those who prefer the dewy finish of a cream blush, try No7 Pop & Glow Duo Blush & Shimmer in Sunrise Glow (£9.95) which is presented in a handy stick format and is a useful multitasker, making it the perfect addition to a travel makeup bag. #15. get lippie

Those new to bright shades may find it easiest to incorporate the look by trying a bold lip colour. If ever there’s the time to try then summer is the season as a bold lip pared with glowing skin and oversized sunglasses is arguably the height of chic. A high gloss finish is a glamourous way to wear. Try Max Factor Colour Elixir Honey Lacquer (£9.99) which combines the intense colour of a lipstick with the shine of a gloss and the comfort of a balm. Check out the shade “Indulgent Coral” which is a flattering summer hue that suits a wide variety of different skin tones. For an effortlessly cool effect, opt for a matte finish (but make sure that lips are in tip top condition first by applying lip balm then buffing gently with an old toothbrush). The Body Shop Matte Lipstick (£8) offers a wallet friendly way to try the look and has shades inspired by the vibrant colours of Latin America. Choose from Lima Magenta, Havana Red or Rio Fuchsia to name just a few. Alternatively, try Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lipstick (£9). The matte shade “Fuchsia Proof” is a favourite thanks to the richly pigmented colour and non-drying formula. If you’re not ready to brave bold colour, try Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oils (£15.80) which offer a subtle hint of colour in a smooth, moisturising formula that’s not sticky or greasy. The line of popular lip oils has recently been extended to include new shades; Honey Glam, Mint, Candy and our favourite, Tangerine.

Got It Nailed

Arguably one of the most wearable ways to try the trend is by painting nails a vibrant hue. Celebrity manicurist, Leighton Denny, offers a variety of tones in his high quality range, all of which are “5-free” meaning that the polishes are free from “nasties” including Tosylamide Formaldehyde resin, Camphor, DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde. What’s more, the formula is impressively longwearing and has a high shine, professional finish. Check out the quirky named colour “Get Your Cote” (£12), which is the perfect hue of electric azure blue. Butter London also offer high performing polishes (£12) which are free from nasties, offering an impressive “8-free” formula which omits Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, DBP, Toluene, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide, Xylene and TPHP. “Tiddly” is a vivid melon shade that looks incredible against tanned skin, whilst the pillarbox red “Smashing!” from the Patent Shine 10x line is a good choice for holidays thanks to the longwearing and UV fade resistant formula. Alternatively, for a wallet friendly option which still avoids some “nasties”, try the cute mini polishes from Mavala (£4.95). The brand’s new collection is called “Color Inspiration” and features six playful new shades with give a nod to the annual Holi Festival of Colours. Brave “Blue Mountains” or “Purple Beach” for something different, or opt for the classic “Red River”. #15. JUNE 2017. THE VIBRANT ISSUE

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS

Words Tom Bradshaw Free-entry celeb music concert kicks off Taverners cricket weekend The long-running and highly successful Lord’s Taverners celebrity cricket weekend has a new element this year – a free entry live music concert in Market Square. Every June a growing number of familiar famous faces return to the Island to lend their support to the biggest fundraiser in the Lord’s Taverners busy events calendar. While traditionally focussed around a cricket match in Herm and some other ticketed events, this year’s proceedings will kick off late afternoon on Friday 23 June with an open-to-all free entry gig called JT Celebrity Market Rocks. It’s the brainchild of JT, the longstanding sponsor of the weekend, which this year will see event regulars such as Chris Tarrant and Lorraine Chase joined by newcomers, including ex England cricketer Mike Atherton.

All give their time for free to help the weekend raise money for wideranging Bailiwick causes, including the recent investment in the new soft play area at Beau Sejour. Friday night’s gig will be headlined by popular local band Buffalo Huddleston and will feature a number of other performers. Visiting celebrities will also take to the stage and mingle in the crowd throughout the evening. Toni Clayton, who chairs the organising committee, said he was delighted with this additional public event. In previous years, the Friday has seen a small scale welcome evening for the guests and celebrities featuring a drinks reception and a small auction. ‘This year we wanted to do something different and JT had the idea of staging the concert,’ said Toni. ‘It’s set to be a fantastic evening and we

want to invite all the public down to enjoy the fun.’

course, enjoy themselves.’

Black Vanilla has helped organise JT Celebrity Market Rocks, with Centre Stage providing the AV.

It will be the fifth year in a row that the cricket match has been staged in Herm. Before that it was held in Sark for 15 years.

The musical showcase, along with all the events throughout the weekend, will be compered by stand up comedian Ian Irving. On the Saturday, select guests will attend a lunchtime drinks reception at Government House ahead of the first ticketed event that night – the sold out Who wants to be a millionaire? quiz with Chris Tarrant at St Pierre Park. Based on his world-renowned TV programme, it’s a show that he no longer routinely performs in the UK, but has made an exception for Guernsey.

Toni, founder and MD of Channel Welders, has been a Taverner for 20 years, and was the regional President when the event moved to Herm in 2013. ‘We wanted to try something new and Herm offered us the opportunity to stage it there. It works very well,’ he said.

Toni said: ‘It’s a reflection of how much he loves coming over and enjoys doing the quiz here. He thinks we’re all nuts – the crowd really gets behind him and he loves it.’ The following morning, two Travel Tridents will take up to 500 spectators over to Herm for the focal point of the weekend – the Herm XI vs the Celebrity XI cricket match. With boats leaving from 9.30am, guests will first enjoy refreshments at The White House Hotel, before the cricket match on the field at the top of the Island gets underway at 11am. Play will break at 1pm for the lobster lunch and auction in the marquee.

Current President Alex Ford said he was looking forward to another great weekend, which consistently raises in the region of £50,000 each year. Alongside providing a number of wheelchair-friendly minibuses to various institutions and supporting disadvantaged children, it also invests time and money into bigger capital projects. One such initiative has been the redevelopment of the KGV Pavilion and disabled changing rooms. The organising committee for the weekend, which also includes Taverners Mickey Robert, Jonathan Watson, Simon de la Rue, Victoria Tonks, Louise Martel, Derek Shepherd and Jonathan Maides, has been meeting since last October. Something for everyone at JT Celebrity Market Rocks

The cricket will conclude at 5.30pm and will be followed by a prize giving ahead of the boats back to Guernsey at 6.30pm. At the time of writing, tickets were still available priced at £90 per head, which includes the return ferry tickets, morning refreshments and lunch. People can also travel to Herm on the day and watch the cricket from the side lines at no cost. Tamara O’Brien, JT’s Head of Marketing, Brand and Distribution, and deputy MD said: ‘We are delighted to continue our long standing support. Year on year the celebrity cricket match has been one of the most enjoyed social events of the Guernsey summer calendar, and the fact that the proceeds go towards supporting disadvantaged young people and giving them a chance to participate in sport, gives us a lot of satisfaction. ‘We decided to add JT Celebrity Market Rocks and the quiz night this year to help promote the cause to a wider audience so that more local people can get involved in supporting this very worthy charity, and, of

Market Square will witness a varied showcase of original and popular covers of music on Friday 23 June. The free entry JT Celebrity Market Rocks will get underway at 4.45pm with street dancing performances before some of the most popular local bands and DJs take to the stage. Jade Isabelle, director of Black Vanilla, which has helped organise the event, said: ‘JT-sponsored music events have become an essential part of Guernsey’s summertime social calendar. The bands, DJs and wellknown faces that will be on stage at JT’s Celebrity Market Rocks, all in aid of The Lord’s Taverners, will make it a highlight of the season and we’re absolutely delighted to be involved with it all.’ Sarah van Vlymen, violinist in Buffalo Huddleston said: This is going to be a great night. THE ISLAND GAMES

This month sees the Guernsey Island Games team compete in Gotland for the 17th edition of this international sporting contest.

COUNTING DOWN TO GOTLAND

Located on Sweden’s coastline, Gotland is a large island and province in the Baltic Sea. It is known as one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations and the capital town Visby is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Gotland provides a beautiful backdrop for the upcoming Island Games. Gotland hopes that their games will be environmentally friendly, as the region is one of 75 in Sweden that are dubbed "eco-municipalities". This means that the area strives for sustainable development, based on the local lifestyle and with a focus on nature at all times. Each year the host island picks between 12 and 14 sports to compete in the games. This year the Gotland Island Games Association has chosen; archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and volleyball. Guernsey will be sending over a representing team for each sport and, as ever, hope to bring home some medals. Brian Allen, Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association (GIGA), believes we have a great mixture this year of experienced team members and new blood, a strong Guernsey team which is hoping for good results. Gymnastics is included in the Gotland games which, unfortunately, at present, we do not compete in. This gives us a challenge on the medal table, but we are still looking for a top-six finish. Guernsey women's triathlete, Amy Critchlow is excited about her team’s chances this year, saying: ‘We have a really strong women's team this year and I think we're in with a great chance for a team medal, as well as individual successes in Gotland. The team comprises of Magda Puzio, Laura McCarthy and myself, with Sammy McNaught-Yendell as the reserve.’ As a warm up to the race in Gotland, the team took part in the

Swashbuckler event held in the New Forest at the end of May. Training for this middle-distance race, which consists of a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and a half-marathon, has built up their fitness to the next level and should help their performances in Gotland. Many of Guernsey’s cycle team are using their Island Games training as an opportunity to also train for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. As such, they are training and racing at the highest level they can at this stage. The mens road team are riding more events together as a ‘team’ rather than individually both in the UK and here locally, learning how each rider's strengths will help in the racing they face in Gotland. The ladies road team are also road racing locally together using the men as competition, and riding the national time trialling races to gain further off-island experience. The athletics team will be looking stronger than it did in 2015 with the youngsters having two more years of experience and training in their legs. Experienced athletes such as Lee Merrien, Sarah Mercier, Louise Perrio, Josh Allaway and Cameron Chalmers are expected to produce the goods and will set a good example to the rest of the team. There will also be a few new faces who Tom Druce is hoping will draw on the experiences of their friends who were the newbies last time. As the athletics season hasn’t really started yet, the team’s main focus has been on training rather than racing, but the recent Intertrust Track and Field Challenge saw Hannah Lesbirel run 25.87sec into a strong headwind in the 200m which highlights that she should be a serious medal contender. Other strong performances in the women’s sprints were Abi Galpin and Jasmine Norman who will both be in the squad. Jonny Guille and James Bougourd opened their seasons in the long jump and javelin respectively. The badminton squad has seen a player change as, unfortunately, Sarah Garbutt, an experienced Island Games player has withdrawn. Thankfully, former badminton gold medalist Elena Johnson has stepped in.

The team were involved in the recent Easter Tournament, a UK competition on the Badminton English Silver Circuit (second tier of tournament). Team members Paul Le Tocq, Ove Svejstrup and Elena Johnson, together with team coach for the Games, former England International, Rebecca (Bex) Pantaney, won the five main events between them, beating tough opposition from England and Jersey. Excitingly, the Guernsey men’s senior football squad includes 14 debutants, with the remaining six players having been part of the successful gold medal team from Jersey 2015. The squad is drawn from all of Guernsey’s football group, with fifteen of the players having played Priaulx League football this season. Manager, Steve Sharman, comments, ‘I feel this group is a true Guernsey team that at its heart has an enormous amount of quality, energy and potential. The core of experienced players is complimented by young and enthusiastic talent.’ Table tennis has also seen a great start to the year with several of the Island Games team picking up island titles. The team are bringing over European coach Branka Batinic to take a training camp; she

previously assisted with training two years ago thanks to a bursary from Generali Worldwide. This time she is also bringing over six Swedish juniors as knocking partners. The Guernsey swimming team, who received the Generali Worldwide bursary this year, will use the funds to pay for additional pool time for the swim team to have intensive preparation training. They also plan to bring in a coach for competition training which will create special bonding time for the swimmers from the two local clubs. Brian concludes: ‘The biannual Island Games gives local athletes a unique opportunity of spending a whole week of competitive sport. Meeting, competing and living with 24 other islands is a wonderful experience which is never forgotten. The feeling of belonging to Team Guernsey is also a memory for life and one which so many local sports people have already experienced.’ The Guernsey team departs for Gotland on 23rd June, and the Games start with the opening ceremony on Saturday. Teddy sets include: A husband and wife team-ship, Keni and Ian Domaille are the owners of a vibrant new business Teddy Treasures, which first opened its doors in the early months of 2017. Teddy Treasures is a local teddy and soft toy building company, offering a large range from ponies, kittens and unicorns to dragons, dinosaurs and lions. Whether you have a party or a sleepover, Teddy Treasures is perfect for any occasion. There are no minimum or maximum numbers for a party and building teddy bears are certainly not limited to just children. Teddy Treasures can supply and deliver only, or come out to lead your build! Deciding to set up Teddy Treasures came with Keni & Ian having 5 year old twin boys, both with big imaginations and a love of cuddly toys. When the boys were at playschool, they both had a turn at bringing "Salty Bear" home with them. Salty Bear came with a back-pack full of clothes, PJ's, shoes, a sleeping bag and even a teddy tooth brush! At the time, their sons had been going to lots of birthday parties. Each one of them (including their own party) always seemed to be much of the same thing, over and over again. This is where the pair saw a gap in the market. Before they knew it, searching for their sons own Salty Bear turned into them opening Teddy Treasures! QUOTE FROM TEDDY TREASURES OWNER, KENI DOMAILLE It is truly incredible to watch little imaginations come alive as the children perform the "cuddle test", placing a wish insert into their stuffed teddy, whilst making a wish and bringing their teddy to life! This, and the completion of an adoption certificate, give the children a real sense of ownership.

Teddy Skin Stuffing Wish insert Adoption Certificate Carry Home Bag Instructions Delivery

£25 is the standard charge for Teddy Treasures to come out and lead a build. To support the launch of Teddy Treasures they are giving away not one, but two 16 inch teddy sets to one lucky winner. Full instructions will be included, plus a demo on delivery. See Page 10 for more information on how to win!

Watching the huge smiles on the little faces of children and seeing how special their teddies are to them, makes this the very best job in the world. We utterly love it. Teddy Treasures' aim is to provide good quality products at affordable prices. Prices for each teddy vary, 8 inch teddy sets are £8.00 or £8.50 (depending on the chosen teddy) and 16 inch teddy sets are £12.00 to £12.50 (again, depending on chosen teddy). Words cheyenne wylie Teddy Treasures is run via Facebook and e-mail so they are open 24/7. For more information visit www.facebook.com/Teddytreasures.ci

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.

THE LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET The Guernsey property market continues to see a steady increase in numbers of sales through court. Compared to the static market in 2015 we are doing pretty well and whilst values have dropped at the present moment they appear stable. What has become apparent is that in practice there are two markets running in parallel. One market has vendors that are realistic and purchases that are able to discern real value whether that implies a large discount to asking prices or paying the asking price. The other market has vendors that have unrealistically high expectations and purchasers that assume they can knock off 20% of the asking price regardless of whether the property is sensibly priced or not. Obviously the market with realistic buyers and sellers is very busy. There is a good selection of property available and a substantial number of serious buyers out there.

Keith Enevoldsen, Partner Keith Enevoldsen entered into Guernsey's property market as an Open Market negotiator in the eighties and joined Martel Maides in 2001 as a Local Market negotiator. He became department manager in 2003 and a Director of the Company in 2004.

Martel Maides was established over 40 years ago and has become Guernsey's most comprehensive estate agent for the sale, letting and management of property in Guernsey, Channel Islands. We are the only multi-disciplinary local agent with true expertise in each area of the property spectrum in the Island. Our team includes experts in Local & Open Market Residential Sales and Lettings, Property Management, Commercial Property, Retail and Industrial, Property Auctions and Field Sales, Fine Art and Chattels Auctions.

Some market commentators have implied that with Brexit in the mix combined with the UK General Election and the US/ Eurozone situations we would see a slowdown in activity.

+

The truth is that despite problems in the wider world, people in Guernsey still have growing families, or need to down/upsize, want to live by the sea/town or have a mass of reasons to move. Economic prudence comes into it, but often people just want to get on with life – and that will always drive our market – barring some sort of major unknown event. Long term property is a good bet – and that’s why buy to let buyers are appearing back on the scene locally.

ANY ISSUES YOU'D LIKE RAISED? info@gsymedia.gg

All in all the local property market is in very robust health.

CLEAN AND BRIGHT bringing colour into your bathroom Words Polly Tapper in the quest for a clean looking bathroom many homeowners stick to white and chrome when it comes to bathroom design, but incorporating colour and patterns need not be bathroom taboo. The trick to getting it right is to create accents of colour, rather than a whole theme and to maintain clean surfaces. For those wishing to just dip a toe in, upgrading your tapware may be the best way to get a new look for your bathroom, and freshen things up. With recent gains in technology, tapware can be almost any colour you want with manufacturers offering “very feminine finishes like rose gold and more masculine finishes like black chrome, along with finishes like gold and brass nickel” explains Rachel Barclay, Senior Bathroom Designer at Channel Island Ceramics. Whenever a trend is seen in every second Pinterest image with hashtag ‘beautiful bathroom’, you know that it’s likely the trend is already on the way out, and so too, we can foresee that white butcher tiles will soon be another trend from the ‘past’. Instead you’ll now find recent Pinterest images showing showers lined with coloured and patterned tiles. Picture a shower recess covered with monochromatic, yet elaborate and almost gothic designed tiles – by itself it certainly looks incredibly busy, but within a bathroom of simple proportions, smart tapware and clean and empty space, the eye is drawn to the tiled shower recess as a feature in an otherwise minimalist scene, and so it works. #15. White will always be en vogue in bathroom design because it naturally gives us a bright, light and clean feel. However, this doesn’t mean that it is, in itself, a feature. More often we can see white walled and tiled bathrooms offset with striking and vibrant rugs, and perhaps a coloured vanity. It’s all about less is more and using colour to set a more relaxed, vibrant and comfortable scene in what can otherwise be an austere, and almost hospital-like space, if we let white overly dominate. Perhaps we won’t see the dramatic and overwhelming colours seen in 1950s’ bathroom design – an era when ceramic tended to take a pastel hue to match tiles, and walls to create a complete colour wave. But colour has had a coming home to ceramic as Rachel describes the current trends, “manufacturers are following suit with matching colours for furniture and handles, and ceramics finishes. Villeroy & Boch are offering a soft feminine colour palette for their basins from powder pink to powder blue, and black to match the more masculine black chrome.” Another way to set the tone for your bathroom is to consider the light and colour you can create with lighting. Lighting fixtures can be made a feature in a bathroom and even a small space can benefit from a lighting overhaul. Rachel shares her tips, “dramatic lighting has enhanced our bathrooms making them spaces to be enjoyed and relaxed in. Coloured or light changing LED strips help create atmosphere, blue and purple light for a cooler dramatic feel, yellow and red for a warmer light. Change your colour with your mood or practically how you use the bathroom.” As with any space, when considering design, functionality is paramount. This is particularly essential in the bathroom where you need to consider any material used and how well it can withstand the effects of steam and moisture to ensure you maintain a safe and clean environment. So, be careful when incorporating non-bathroom specific items and, in particular, when it comes to selecting floor tiles, check that they are non-slip. If in doubt, speak to a specialist bathroom designer or stockist for advice. No matter how much colour or space you have in your bathroom, the most pleasing design element will always be cleanliness. Most importantly, keep your bathroom free of clutter by utilising good storage. You can never waste space on good storage and, in a bathroom where space might be tight, look to the walls and under basin area to place storage so as to keep your floor space at a maximum. Don’t forget about the shower and bath and look for in-shower storage to keep shampoo and products neat and tidy. For those of us who don’t enjoy scrubbing our tapware and tiles to remove grime and limescale (I’m pretty sure that’s all of us), be sure to check out some of the latest technological advances in tile grout, tapware and shower hoses that incorporate anti-bacterial properties to make cleaning much easier and quicker. When it comes to planning your next bathroom makeover there’s no need to be dramatic, but do allow yourself to experiment with colour. You really can’t go wrong so long as you abide by the maxim, ‘less is more’, and keep the look clean, light and bright.

CRANFORDS GIVE GUERNSEY

So you want to buy a house but don’t know what it looks like. That’s ok, GSYLife have property pages, you take a look and one catches your eye. Off you go to check it out online. Oh my, this looks great, nice space, bathroom tip top and spacious bedrooms. Turning up for the viewing of what you think is a spacious three bed turns into viewing a shoe box with a small study with two tiny bedrooms! Estate Agents have been using photo editing tools for some years now and these can include everything from fixing exposure to removing objects and even visualising planned enhancements to a property. It has long been touted as a fast and easy way to improve an estate agent’s photos to help their properties stand out on property websites and reflect a quality brand image. Whilst this is great, it doesn’t necessarily mean than you can get the best representation of what it’s like to be inside the property. Dom, Managing Director at Cranfords explains, “After much research and customer feedback, we are excited to lead the way in

Guernsey with the addition of 360 degree photography to our website, thus allowing a more interactive initial viewing experience before arranging to view a property in person. This is already proving to be very popular with our clients, particularly those who lead such busy lives and find it difficult to fit in viewings.” Whilst photo editing is still an essential tool, technology has now advanced to the next level with the introduction of 360 degree photography to enable virtual tours of properties, and these are really starting to take off as a musthave service for estate agents. The technology is familiar to those in the digital world and working in three dimensions, such as architects, and that lead is now being adopted into house sales. The 360 degree video has become more and more mainstream, with video footage as well as still images. The basics involve taking images from multiple cameras before

A NEW WAY TO HOUSE HUNT

using computer software to ‘stitch’ the images, together giving a seamless 360 degree view. The effect is similar to that of walking into a house and being given a guided tour. The screen has arrows indicating which room you can visit next as you explore what the property has to offer. For ease of navigating, there’s also a sidebar showing a list of the rooms allowing for quick views of whichever room takes your fancy. Dom recognises that, despite the dawn of this new technology, it’s not compulsory but simply complements their current offering for those that want it, “At Cranfords are always trying to think outside the box and continually look to improve our technology, especially regarding our photography and media presentations. We are now able to offer both standard imagery as well as Virtual Tours on all property instructions going forward. We believe this will improve the viewing experience for our clients by enabling them to see rooms from every angle and zoom in

on particular areas of interest.” The new service is offered at no additional cost to the vendor of the property and, of course, is an optional extra. In an ever changing and competitive estate agent market, it’s important to stand out and make your mark. Information is consumed through multiple channels and media, and this appears to be a very natural progression for estate agency. Dom is confident that they’re leading the way with this move, “Cranfords Estate Agents always endeavours to stay up to date with state of the art technology whilst continuing to maintain a professional yet diverse agency for the future, and we invite anyone looking to sell a property to contact Cranfords to see how we can help with this exciting initiative.” For more information email: sale@cranfords.co.uk or to see the tours in action visit their website www.cranfords.co.uk.

ORACLE FINANCE The world of financial decisions can sometimes feel overwhelming and mind boggling. Whether it's buying a new home or deciding how to invest your earnings, the choices are many and the providers all have different criteria, which are constantly changing. Deciding on which route to go down can be helped along enormously by speaking to a broker like Oracle Finance. Oracle is a locally owned mortgage and insurance broker. They also provide independent financial advice on investments as well as acting as lenders themselves. Directors Conor Burke, Martyn Loveridge and Chloe Gallienne along with Associate Director Lorna Brown, lead a team of 12 staff, who all keep up to date on the way markets are moving so they can give the very best advice to clients. I met the Directors to learn more about the company and came away from the meeting thinking that there is simply no reason why you would not go to a broker when moving house or looking for insurance advice. There is no additional cost to you because Oracle staff are paid commission directly from the various lenders and insurers for any introductions they make. 'We're independent, which means we have no agenda to push. Our work is really all about meeting each individual set of circumstances and finding something suitable for them. Clients best interests are key,' says Conor. Conor heads up the mortgage broking side of the business; an industry he has been working in for 17 years.

Words samata russell

'When I first started there was a lack of communication between estate agents and banks. For a deal to be secure in the eyes of the estate agents and their vendors, they wanted to have confirmation from the buyers' banks. Banks were resistant to giving any information away due to their confidentiality policies and this could be frustrating for the people involved who just wanted to feel secure that their deal was going to go ahead. 'We work closely with banks and understand their lending criteria so we feel confident that we can accurately advise whether a mortgage application will be successful. In this way we can give reassurance and keep lines of communication open when buying a house, which can be one of the most stressful things people go through,' said Conor. Oracle staff hold their customers' hands through each stage of buying a house. They provide a pack of information with everything you would need to know - from what documents you need to information on what order the process unfolds - as well as talking to surveyors, estate agents, banks and even electricians or timber and damp specialists when needed. 'It's Guernsey so we know the estate agents very well and we bump into advocates and people we work with around the Island. We have our fingers on the pulse of the changes that each institution is making so we can advise our clients appropriately,' said Conor. A number of Oracle employees have been appointed after many years working at leading local banks, so their knowledge is second to none. Having a chat to them could save you many weeks of work trailing around the High Street comparing rates and criteria.

BUSINESS / FEATURE

‘At an initial meeting with a prospective purchaser we have the authority to agree in principle a mortgage and, if this isn’t possible we advise a course of action for the client to put them in a position to successfully apply for a mortgage. This can include things like simply waiting until they have more savings or holding off whilst loans or credit cards are settled prior to applying,' says Conor. While mortgages are a large part of Oracle's work, there is also the personal lending side of the business, headed up by Director Chloe Gallienne. Oracle provides personal loans for items such as cars, holidays, weddings or consolidation loans. 'Chloe is a great asset to the business, she has the ability to think outside the box when looking at structuring a loan. We don’t work to a set of criteria where the computer makes the underwriting decision. Each application is looked at on its own merits and we can be flexible to find ways to support our client’s needs,' says Conor. 'Sometimes it's a question of taking into account imminent promotions or bonuses, that other lenders might not rely on for their tick sheet. Larger institutions run very rigidly to their set of procedures, but we can be more flexible,' says Chloe. Oracle has also carved a reputation in the local market for Peer to Peer lending. This was borne out of banks tightening their criteria on lending, in particular property development loans, as a result of the financial crisis.

‘We have a panel of private lenders who provide funding for bespoke loans to local clients. These deals are predominantly for property developments (large or small) and open bridging finance. That said, we have arranged deals for many other cases that for one reason or another do not fit bank lending criteria,' says Lorna. And lastly, Director Martyn Loveridge, heads up a team of seven insurance professionals covering all aspects of insurance. To the staff at Oracle, it is important that clients understand exactly what they are covered for. ‘Clients need to be made aware of what their insurance covers and as importantly, what they are not covered for. All clients are allocated a dedicated broker who looks after their products with us and each policy is reviewed at renewal, when we actively compare the market for better terms and premiums so clients can rest assured we are doing our best by them,' says Martyn. 'Likewise when it comes to making claims, clients contact their individual broker who will assist with processing the claim face to face. We can meet with third parties such as loss adjusters when required, and assist with completing any relevant paperwork to get settlement paid as quickly as possible,' he adds. In the old days, if people needed financial advice, they would go to their banks. Today, it is a different story, with more than 60% of people in the UK choosing to see a broker instead, as they have the insider view of the market and can save you a lot of time, getting you the best deal possible. In Guernsey, it seems to be heading the same way and you can see why. Really, why wouldn't you?!

YBG BALL

YOUNG BUSINESS GROUP

#15. JUNE 2017. THE VIBRANT ISSUE

BUSINESS / FEATURE

MEET THE FINALISTS The Young Business Group was formed in connection with the Chamber of Commerce, over fifty years ago. The aim was to provide a specific focus for the younger element of the business community to meet, discuss common issues and extend their business network. The group’s primary objective remains unchanged. Over the years, YBG has grown in size and now boasts in excess of 120 members, representing a diverse range of business areas from across the island. YBG provides members with an effective opportunity to socialise, broaden their contacts and make meaningful connections with like minded members. Despite the “young” tag YBG has a membership across all age groups. YBG has members from every background covering many business sectors, including the retail, hospitality, media, advertising, commercial, IT, legal and finance sectors. It meets on the first Thursday of every month, holding a lunch, dinner or drinks event which provides members with an opportunity to chat informally over a meal, make new business connections and friends and enjoy a talk by a topical speaker – recent notable speakers have been: Locate Guernsey, Start Up Guernsey, Gavin St Pier, White Rock Brewery, Digital Greenhouse, The Busy Guernsey Bee and the Guernsey Training Agency. In addition YBG organise a number of events including an annual trip to Herm, a quiz night and an annual summer ball. As well as the regular monthly events, YBG is also proud to be involved in a number of community initiatives, such as the Annual Business Trends Survey undertaken on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, presentation of the Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit (administered by YBG on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce) and the Island community is also supported through YBG’s long running commitment to assist in the coordination of the organisation and switch on event of the Christmas Lights display in St Peter Port. Guiding all these activities is a council elected annually from the membership. The Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit is given by the YBG to local businesses that have demonstrated a desire to succeed and the ambition, vision and drive to turn ideas into a successful business. Bill Green was a well-known local businessman who was passionate about Guernsey and always sought to encourage the business sector. He believed that luck was only the ability to recognise opportunities – an ability which he considered played an important factor in whether

you are successful or not in any sphere of life. Bill Green recognised the requirements of the Islanders and the developing social trends of his time. During the occupation, the bicycle was the primary form of transport for islanders, since motor vehicles were requisitioned by the Germans. As bicycles became very precious possessions, Bill developed a successful bicycle business. Noting that there were no locks to secure bicycles, he also made side income from charging people to store their bicycles at his shop in Smith Street while they went about their business. The entries for the 2017 Bill Green Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit have been submitted, and the judges have announced a shortlist of three companies: B Creative Limited, Cafe Delices and De Garis Accounting Limited. They all impressed the judging panel, which comprises of members of Startup Guernsey, the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce and the YBG. YBG president Steve Rouxel said “each year the award attracted a high calibre of entries, and 2017 has been no different. The judges received a number of entries this year and it never fails to amaze us the diversity of the business sectors that have entered the award.” “The entries for the shortlisted companies were of a high quality and it was clear to the judges that they demonstrated the ethos of the Bill Green Award. The people behind each company are passionate about their business, and the judges are looking forward to meeting them and hearing more at the final presentations towards the end of the month. We wish them all the very best for the next stage.” The winner will be announced on Friday 16th June at the annual YBG Summer Ball sponsored by GSY Media. The theme of this year’s summer ball is Modern Pioneers, which ties closely to Bill Green’s entrepreneurial spirit here in Guernsey. This year’s guest speaker is Dan Phillips who is Head of Digital and Interactive at Moving Picture Company; they are renowned for adding visual wonder and creative expertise to the advertising, film and entertainment industries. Some of their most famous projects include blockbuster movies such as The Jungle Book, The Martian, the Harry Potter franchise, the X-Men movies and Life of Pi, not to mention famous advertising campaigns for brands such as Samsung, Coca-Cola, Sony, Ikea, Three Mobile and Channel 4. If you are interested in finding out more about the YBG or would like to join as a member just visit the website: www.ybg.gg or email membership@ybg.gg

ZEDRA’S ELAINE GRAHAM NAMED WOMAN OF THE YEAR AT CITYWEALTH MAGIC CIRCLE AWARDS ZEDRA’S head of employer solutions, Elaine Graham, was named Woman of the Year at the Citywealth Magic Circle Awards. In front of more than 300 guests at London’s Rosewood Hotel, Mrs Graham took the honour ahead of seven other highflying female industry professionals. ‘I was very surprised but absolutely delighted to have won especially in a category with so many impressive women in the wealth industry. It really is a great honour to win and I am very grateful to the judges and Citywealth. My client base includes some large corporate clients as well as HNW individuals and as a trustee you touch many parts of the wealth industry which may have contributed to my success in the awards,’ said Mrs Graham. It was a successful night for ZEDRA, which also took the title of Independent Trust Company of the Year. ‘It’s great to see ZEDRA recognised in this way, it was a good night for us,’ added Mrs Graham. The Awards, now in their 12th year and regarded as the Oscars of the finance world, recognise the best wealth managers and advisors in the private wealth industry, in particular those who invest money with charities, private families and foundations. ‘Being shortlisted was something we were proud of when you consider the calibre of judges, the reputations of those we were up against and remembering that the ZEDRA name is only 18 months old,’ said managing director of ZEDRA Guernsey Julien Sharpe. ‘To be named Independent Trust Company of the Year is testament to what makes ZEDRA different. We now have more than 500 employees across 13 offices worldwide and each one has played a part in this success.’ Mr Sharpe added that he was thrilled for Mrs Graham.

‘Elaine is one of a kind. She is incredibly professional, constantly exceeds client expectations and is a fantastic leader. While I may be a little biased, she absolutely deserves this award,’ he said. annual sports bursary scheme, supporting community sport as well. “We are thrilled that this ongoing partnership means that, together, we can work towards 2021, when Guernsey will be in the spotlight as the team competes on home ground. Securing this long-term sponsorship means we can focus 100 per cent on our sport and our athletes.” The Island Games team is currently busy training for the 2017 Games to be held in Gotland, Sweden, in June. Over the course of the seven-day event, 3,000 athletes from 24 countries will compete across 14 different sports. Guernsey has never been out of the top four medal winners and, at the 2016 Island Games in Jersey, the team won 28 gold medals across nine sports, placing them third out of 24 competing countries. The Games also have personal significance for Generali Worldwide employees, some of whom have participated in past events and/ or are awaiting team selection news for Gotland. Giorgio Daboni, Chief Executive Officer, Generali Worldwide in Guernsey, states: “Having supported the Guernsey Island Games Team since 2011, we are fully aware of the passion and drive that power these athletes across their various sporting disciplines. The spirit of the Games and Guernsey’s team matches our own corporate drive to be the very best and we are thrilled to be supporting the team beyond Gotland as they bring the Games home to Guernsey in 2021.” Generali Worldwide has also been supporting the Guernsey Sports Commission via a charitable donation since 2015, which is being used to implement a coaching development programme and the Get Active Stay Active series of free sports try-out sessions.

INTERTRUST LAUNCHES FINTECH FINANCIAL MODELLING TOOL Intertrust has launched a FinTech innovation to help those with pensions or investments to forecast and plan how they could achieve their financial goals. InVision is a financial modelling system that provides clients with a full detailed analysis of expected outcomes and empowers users to feel confident in their decision making. The tool has been launched at a time when the pensions market is undergoing rapid change, which will be covered at the inaugural Jersey International Pension Conference at the Royal Yacht Hotel on Friday 12 May. Changes in the pensions market have resulted in many individuals wanting to take ownership of their retirement plans to ensure their future financial needs are met adequately and Intertrust’s modelling system is available to individual clients as well as employers and employees. The system will use factors such as age, current portfolios, risk appetite, desired annual income and total targets to model the best solution for participants and helps offer a clear strategy for forward planning. Crucially, the tool also considers external factors such as inflation and interest rates to provide a comprehensive analysis. Mark Lindsay, head of pensions at Intertrust and chairman of the Jersey International Pension Conference, said: “It’s no secret that the pensions market is evolving and the upcoming conference will touch on this as well as developments in the sector and what makes the Channel Islands a jurisdiction of choice for international pensions. “We feel strongly that this is the right time to empower our pension and investment clients and provide them with the confidence that sound financial modelling can yield. InVision is interactive and userfriendly and will provide our clients with an indication today of what their pension savings will provide them with in the future, when the time comes to draw down their entitlement.” The inaugural Jersey International Pension Conference takes place at The Royal Yacht Hotel and tickets can be booked online at https://jerseypensionconference.com/.

FCG HELPS 1ST CENTRAL TO PRESTIGIOUS BRITISH AWARD NOMINATION guernsey-based FCG, the parent and development company for 1st CENTRAL motor insurance company, has helped the UK insurer win a nomination at the British Insurance Awards (BIA).

THE BIG DUCKS ARE ON THE BILL AGAIN FOR GUERNSEY’S BUSINESSES businesses are being requested to go quackers once again, by purchasing their own big yellow duck to enter into this year’s Harbour Carnival Corporate Duck Race. Taking place on Friday 11 August and sponsored for the 10th year by RBC Wealth Management, this year’s event has The HUB as its main beneficiary. Their Sunflower Project will receive 50% of the funds raised, to support young people experiencing a loss or serious illness in their family, as well as providing guidance for parents. The other 50% will be divided up across a range of local good causes throughout the year. Dustyn Molver from organisers, the Round Table, said: ‘Harbour Carnival is traditionally opened each year by the start of the Corporate Duck Race. For just £200, a business can enter its very own branded duck into the race. . It’s a great event for companies to show their support for local good causes and I hope as many as possible will get onboard.’ RBC Wealth Management’s Lisa Barnett from their Guernsey Leadership Team said: ‘We’re delighted to be celebrating 10 years of sponsoring what has become an integral part of Guernsey’s calendar of events. We are always grateful to the business community for their support and we’ll be interested to see who’ll be ducking and diving against the RBC Corporate Duck this year!’

The BIA is the foremost awards for the sector and FCG’s involvement will highlight Guernsey’s leading position in FinTech at a ceremony in July where 1st CENTRAL will vie for Insurance Broker of the Year. One of 1st CENTRAL’s key differentiators in a busy insurance market is its bespoke, full retail insurance platform built by FCG and called FOCUS; it allows the group extreme agility with the ability to collate, use and analyse data across quotes, bookings, claims and other ongoing support. The flexibility of the FOCUS platform plays a significant part in 1ST CENTRAL being a consistent top 10 seller on UK price comparison websites. FCG group chairman, Mike Leonard, said the BIAs were the insurance industry Oscars and being part of a team to be nominated was highly prestigious. “We have been quietly pushing the boundaries of FinTech in our sector for a long time and to be playing a part in the industry recognising 1st CENTRAL’s innovative way of underwriting motor insurance is excellent,” he said. “FOCUS allows FCG to disrupt the traditional UK motor insurance market; in Guernsey we continually evolve the platform to anticipate what 1st CENTRAL’s customers need now and in the future. “We are enormously proud too of our Guernsey-grown development team which has devised and built FOCUS; we’ve grown from four to more than 30 in only four years and we know that the way we assist 1st CENTRAL is a key part in its success. “FCG has created a continuous environment of learning and development offering an opportunity to work in the advance .NET sphere which is not available anywhere else in Guernsey. This is a real success for Guernsey and we expect to be continuing to build on our innovations in our sector and further afield.” information. Deadline for entries is Friday 30 June.

Companies wishing to purchase a corporate duck can register by emailing harbourcarnivalgsy@gmail.com for more information. Deadline for entries is Friday 30 June.

GEAR UP FOR INTERTRUST HELMETS Intertrust is giving away 200 cycle helmets to help keep Guernsey’s young people safe. The helmets, which are suitable for children under the age of 13, have been donated to Guernsey Child Accident Prevention Group, Headway Guernsey, the Guernsey Police for use at its cycling profiency courses, Bikeability and the Guernsey Bicycle Group. A Bikeability spokesperson said:“We will be giving some of the helmets out as prizes to reward participants’ effort and improvement. The rest of the helmets will be used by children who don’t own a helmet or who don’t have a suitable one. Intertrust’s donation will make such a difference and will highlight the importance of wearing a helmet.” Paul Schreibke, managing director of Intertrust in Guernsey, said: “Cycling continues to get more and more popular and road safety is therefore even more significant. We are pleased to be able to raise awareness and give out helmets to children in Guernsey to help them stay safe on their bikes. “It is great to be able to support so many local groups that promote road safety. I’m confident the helmets will be beneficial and hope

INDULGE MEDIA MD BECOMES ONE OF ONLY 3,000 IN WORLD TO ACHIEVE NNG UX CERTIFICATION Indulge Media’s managing director and designer Russell Isabelle has joined only 2,909* other people in the world to become User Experience (UX) certified by the Nielson Norman Group. To earn the UX certification each participant must complete five courses at the UX Conference. Each course is designed to give UX professionals more insightful ways to measure user experience on their clients’ websites and analyse user behaviours in more detail. Specialists in web design and search engine optimisation; Indulge Media was launched in 2009 by Patrick Cunningham and Russell Isabelle and now boasts an eight strong team in Guernsey and Oxford. Mr Isabelle has specialised in UX research due to his background in graphic design; this specialist topic covers a range of techniques for gathering meaningful, actionable information about user behaviour. Mr Isabelle said that improving User Experience on a website is important for businesses to increase conversion rate, improve user retention and maximise advertising return on investment (ROI). “Too often the only person missing from

a stakeholder meeting to discuss design is the user and they’re the most important decision maker! Without high quality user research, you’re essentially designing a website for yourselves and not for the people that will be using it, that’s why paying attention to UX is important.” said Mr Isabelle. Patrick Cunningham, chief technology officer at Indulge Media, said: “Russell’s UX certification shows that we put the user at the heart of our web design and digital marketing services, ensuring that our client’s digital presence is as user-friendly, effective and accessible as possible.” The agency also recently transitioned from ISO 9001:2008 to the latest ISO 9001:2015 standards. ISO 9001 is a set of management principles that form the foundations of the business at Indulge. These principles enable tracking, measurement and improvement on key business performance indicators. The ISO 9001: 2015 standard has a greater focus on mitigating business risks. “Renewing our BSI accreditation demonstrates our commitment to high quality web design and digital marketing services, and ensures that we run our business in an ordered way with a culture of continuous improvement,” said Mr Isabelle.

GUERNSEY FINANCE DEPUTY CEO APPOINTED Guernsey Finance, the island’s offshore finance promotional agency, has announced the promotion of Ms Kate Clouston to the position of Deputy Chief Executive. Since starting with Guernsey Finance in 2015 as the agency’s first Director of International Business Development, Kate has been responsible for leading business delegations and promotional activity in South East Asia, North America and Europe. Her work has had a focus on evaluating and developing these target markets, through implementation of development strategies around emerging financial products, and attracting new companies or business to Guernsey. Guernsey Finance Chief Executive, Dominic Wheatley, said: “Kate brings a tremendous level of energy and dedication to the international role. She

has given Guernsey a consistent and knowledgeable presence in the parts of the world from which much of our future financial business will be derived. “This promotion recognises her vital part in the island’s offshore promotional efforts which are conducted by Guernsey Finance and Locate Guernsey. Together, these bodies are giving a small place a louder voice, raising awareness of ‘the Guernsey advantage’ – both business and lifestyle.” Over the past two years Kate has spent almost 200 days ‘on the road’, leading targeted business delegations to countries including Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Amsterdam, New York, Miami, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UK. “It is an honour to be representing Guernsey in our key international markets, and I am delighted to bring news and developments of the Guernsey offering to stakeholders around the world. I am very pleased to continue to work with Guernsey Finance promoting and connecting our jurisdiction,” said Kate. In the first three months of 2017 the Guernsey Finance team has conducted 396 finance sector meetings, 187 of these were with off-island contacts, to introduce the advantages of Guernsey financial products and vehicles. Those meetings in turn have led to 69 direct introductions, or referrals for potential business, to Guernsey financial services providers. Kate, who can speak six languages including Chinese and Arabic, has previous experience as a Programme Head for the Royal United Services Institute, the independent British think tank engaged in cutting edge defence and security research, as a Media Analyst for Edelman StrategyOne, and as a Senior Researcher at the House of Commons.

Invest with Sam Vibrant; not valuable Last month, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Manchester date of Ed Sheeran’s “Divide” tour. For anybody who is unfamiliar with Ed’s work, he has essentially made a career out of playing the unassuming-man (and being a bit of a wizard with a loop-pedal). And while I’m a big fan, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony of someone who, on the one hand, earns a living by making a dig at his ex-partner’s new man for “spending £500 on jeans”, yet, on the other hand (quite literally) is donning a £100,000 Richard Mille watch in the newly released video for hit single Galway Girl. Before we go any further, it’s important to stress that my above observation was not intended to be critical (after all, Mr Sheeran should be able to spend his earnings anyway he pleases), however, what it does do is illustrate how, as humans, we can’t help but inherit magpie-like tendencies. Like our two legged friends, we are naturally drawn to all manner of shiny things and vibrant colours - despite how, at times, the pressures associated with public perception encourage us to underplay this fact. This is a trait that also holds true when it comes to selecting investments. In our experience, investors can quickly become blindsided by the stories (the shiny stuff ) p ropelling the next “must-own-stocks” - with very little (or no) consideration to the existence of the quality characteristics that long-term investors should desire. Unfortunately, the allure of a good story can quickly become an investor’s worst enemy. As every man and his dog scramble to secure a piece of the pie, momentum can lead to a sharp rise in the price of the investment. The initial upward trajectory is almost definitely a curse-

SAM CORBET, Ravenscroft Investment Management in-disguise as it satisfies human tendency to seek out new evidence as confirmation of our existing beliefs - often leading to investors placing greater conviction behind the initial story. In this regard, investors tend to ignore the warning of the infamous Howard Marks who once stated that “no asset is so good that it can’t become a bad investment if bought at too high a price”.

is not gold’. Just because a stock is buoyed by a good story does not necessarily mean it will transition into a valuable investment. It is important to remember that if the quality characteristics do not exist beneath the surface, once the shine fades, all you will be left with is an expensive rock.

We would like to take the opportunity to caveat this wisdom slightly as, in isolation, the price of a stock is actually of very little importance to us (after all price is merely a number). However, a common consequence associated with a roaring share price can lead to heightened valuation. Valuations are a metric that the investment management team pay particular attention to. The difference between price and valuation is subtle but is one that is integral to our investment process. We liken them to climbing a cliff face - your safety rope could fail at any point; however a fall from the summit (where valuations are high) is likely to hurt considerably more than a fall from nearer the base (where valuations are cheaper).

Unfortunately, the allure of a good story can quickly become an investor’s worst enemy. As every man and his dog scramble to secure a piece of the pie, momentum can lead to a sharp rise in the price of the investment.

By remaining conscious of our location on the proverbial cliff face, we are able to limit the height our climbers (investments) can scramble and thus dampen the potential for injury. Let us be clear, we cannot prevent the occasional fall but we can limit the risk our investors are exposed to so that when the market does, inevitably, fall our clients are sufficiently protected and can survive to fight another day. To conclude on the words of another famous lyricist, we caution investors to take note of the notorious insight of William Shakespeare, who coined the fitting phrase ‘all that glitters

WORKSPACES This month we’re taking a new look at property advertising. Sarnia Estate Agents opened their Sarina Property Café on the high street nearly 9 months ago and since then it’s gone from strength to strength, “Over the last couple of years we’ve seen a great response from the public to our friendly service and quality local knowledge. The Sarnia Property café is a way for us to bring a greater level of convenience and service to our customers” said Alex Ford. “The Café offers an environment like no other; relaxing, clean and modern with properties scrolling through on TV screens. Sit back with a coffee and enjoy the show.” To date its seen hundreds of people come in to look at property and find that dream home or rental. Landlords are welcome to come and have a coffee to see how the team can bring a stress free approach to property management too.
