UPFRONT. EDITORS NOTE.

GSY LIFE #2 already! Design is the name of the game this month and it’s by geographic design, from a higher power or otherwise, we find ourselves on the lovely rock that is Guernsey. This presents challenges to various aspects of island life but importantly it gives wonderful opportunity to overcome those challenges. There is no better feeling than overcoming adversity; good times lie ahead and we can all be part of that movement! We’ve seen some incredible things over the course of February from the Achievement Awards and TEDx, to the impulsive acts of kindness brought to us by the Dandelion Project. With all these incredible things in our lives we can accidently slip into thinking that some minor chores or inconveniences are of apocalyptic consequence. They’re not really. Stay positive! GSY Life March edition is Design and some serious professionals can be found through these pages. We feel privileged to showcase the talented exploits of the construction world, some wonderful work being done down at the bathing pools as part of La Vallette Challenge and some inspiring insight into the world of investment, which is as relevant to both the younger and older generations. Whether you are involved in design or simply appreciate design the one thing we can all do is unite in our love of the island we live in with all its’ quirky designs, some of which you will see in these pages. Enjoy your March with a spring in your step and let us know what you think! Simon

1

Our beautiful little Island of Guernsey, as we all know, is situated underneath a great big rock called England, but have you ever looked at what is above? Well let me tell you that directly above (and a little bit to the left) are a set of island similar to ours called the Faroe Islands. In February these tiny islands have a sea temperature of only 7.2 degrees, whereas our beautiful tropical island of Guernsey has a sea temperature of 9 degrees. That’s nearly 2 whole degrees more!

LEARN SOME GUERNSEY PATOIS Plan n. pllan m. to draw a plan - faire aen pllàn source: guernésiais dictionary

The fairy ring is a mysterious circle in the ground at the island’s western extremity, pleinmont. It was a stopping point for officials of the royal court who paraded across guernsey, and folklore suggests that if you walk around it three times and then make a wish, it will come true.

PRACTICE NEWS Last month’s edition reported on the Vets4Pets move to their new premises in Les Merriennes. Here we take a look inside This is mirrored in the reception with chestnut floors, oak finished doors and an oak reception desk. One of the biggest changes is how the interior of the practice looks and feels. Giving pets and their owners an environment designed to calm even the most nervous animals.

Behind the reception desk there is one large room which is the hub of the practice. From here all other areas connect; operating theatres, isolation wards, cat ward, dog ward, X-ray room, dental theatre, pharmacy, laboratory, intensive care ward and come April, a CT scanner.

Within the separate cat and dog consultation rooms there are photo canvases from around Guernsey including scenes of the harbour and the South cliffs. There is also a whole wall within the waiting area with a picture of the Sunken Gardens.

A total investment of £750,000 went into converting the building from offices to a fully-functioning veterinary practice, creating a one-of-a-kind branch of the national brand that boasts not only increased functionality and efficiency but also style and charm.

Food

It is a rare opportunity to be able to design a vet practice from a large empty shell. Most practices are within converted houses, pubs, or, as with the most of the new Vets4Pets practices in the UK, within Pets at Home stores. This means that the new Vets4Pets practice has been built with efficiency in mind and provides the best possible care for the animals. From starting out as the support office for Vets4Pets to now housing one of the Vet Group’s flagship practices, the building at Les Merriennes has gone through some dramatic changes. Work started out on the transformation in August 2015 and was completed at the end of November. Gone is the grey façade of previous years, replaced with a lighter look and wood cladding around the building.

MY NAME: Adam Trump

MY BREED: Guern

This month as our pet of the month winner is Porcha, the royal python, here are some fun facts on snakes.

PORCHA’S BREED: Royal Python

• Snakes are typically solitary, so it is advisable to have just one snake per habitat. Create the right environment for your snake, such as maintaining the right temperature and humidity for them. A heat lamp is an excellent source of heat but they also like to have a cool retreat to hang out in from time to time. •

Did you know that snakes love consistency and routine? You should stick to a routine for feeding and cleaning their habitat so that they do not become stressed.

• Although snakes have nostrils, they rely on their tongues to help track their prey. Their forked tongues collect airborne particles and send scent signals through the vomeronasal organ. •

Snakes do not have eyelids. Instead, their eyes are covered with a thin protective membrane that sheds and regrows with their skin.

The oldest snake fossils have been dated at more than 140 – 160 million years old! This means that they slithered the earth along with the dinosaurs.

Always seek advice from a professional before purchasing a snake as a pet and make sure you can provide the care and attention they will need to thrive.

MOST TREASURED POSSESSION: A mummified bat. PORCHA’S FAVOURITE POSSESSION: Plastic folliage and natural wood. LOCAL HERO:... My mum for allowing all my creatures in her homernsey. PORCHA’S LOCAL HERO: Me. Their options are limited. #02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

Each year, the insurance broker nominates a charity as the beneficiary of its dress down days and GROW Limited was chosen for 2015; Rossborough matches the money raised by staff. GROW decided to use the £1,404 in a number of ways, including a party for its entire workforce to thank them for their hard work during 2015. ‘As a charity, we struggle to find sufficient funds at the end of the year to be able to reward those that attend and work at GROW. Rossborough’s assistance, via their very thoughtful fundraising initiative, came at the right time and also gives us some additional funds to buy equipment and uniforms which we need to renew regularly,’ said GROW manager, Edward Higgins. Rossborough’s chosen charity for 2016 is a fitness initiative for cancer patients after one of the directors experienced the first-hand benefits. CanMove is an initiative that helps islanders who have undergone, or are undergoing, treatment for cancer, to regain their fitness. The initiative is free for its users and has been made possible due to donations from Pink Ladies and MUG (Male Uprising Guernsey). It was chosen after Rossborough director, Steve Moullin, started attending the sessions while he was undergoing treatment for testicular cancer. ‘The fatigue and muscle wastage during and after treatment is extreme and CanMove has been instrumental for me in regaining my stamina and fitness,’ said Mr Moullin. ‘I’m indebted to them for helping me during my recovery and so am delighted that my colleagues at Rossborough have chosen it as the beneficiary for 2016, so that more people have access to its support.’ The twice-weekly sessions are run by Medical Specialist Group exercise physiologist, Gareth Corbett. MUG

chairman, Trevor Kelham, said that since it was launched in 2012, it has helped hundreds of islanders. ‘CanMove is a great initiative for cancer patients as the opportunity to attend fitness sessions is tailored to their needs plays a significant part in their recovery. We simply wouldn’t be able to offer that without the financial support of companies like Rossborough,’ said Mr Kelham. With it being Rossborough’s 80th anniversary this year and managing director, Ian Stewart, said it had supported many charities and voluntary

organisations during that time. ‘We try to identify charities and organisations where our donations can make a real difference, and in recent years Rossborough has helped Jumbulance, the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, the GSPCA, St Sampson’s High Schools and the Healing Music Trust,’ said Mr Stewart.

Students blog on Guernsey’s key issues Three students have won the opportunity to attend next year’s Institute of Directors (IoD) Annual Convention in London thanks to an initiative created by the Ana Leaf Foundation. Gilbert Bishop-White from the Grammar Sixth Form Centre, Fergal Morrissey from Elizabeth College and Freya McLaren from Ladies’ College all ‘blogged’ for their place on the all-expenses paid trip to London to attend the Convention this coming September. The Ana Leaf Foundation’s ‘Directors of Tomorrow’ scheme, now in its seventh year, saw nine students attend an informal lunch last October to meet the moderator of this year’s Guernsey IoD Annual Debate and voice of BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, Sarah Montague. The students, selected by their teachers for their interest in business and current affairs, then attend the evening’s debate and drafted blogs on their thoughts on the evening. This year’s Guernsey IoD debate addressed the question; “Is Guernsey a demographic time bomb?” The Directors of Tomorrow judging panel, including representatives of The Ana Leaf Foundation and the IoD Guernsey Committee, then selected the top three blogs. Richard Le Tocq, chair of the Guernsey branch of the IoD, said: “The Guernsey IoD debate was particularly important for our students as we discussed the issues that are going to affect their generation, in particular issues surrounding population and the ageing demographic of our island. “I think the students’ blogs show real depth and knowledge. a scheme that places value on the development of Guernsey’s future leaders and are extremely grateful that the Ana Leaf Foundation has given students this opportunity. It is a great initiative.” Hayley de Putron, trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation, said: “The Directors of Tomorrow initiative gives our future leaders an insight into local business and a chance to voice their opinions on the current issues that surround them. “I was impressed by the intuitive comments made by the students both during the debate and in their blogs, providing another perspective on Guernsey’s key issues.” The IOD’s Annual Convention in London takes place on the 27 September 2016. Speakers will be announced nearer the time.

Lifelong sea swimmer opens newly refurbished Bathing Pools changing rooms Life long sea swimmer Bernie Savage, 88, cut the ribbon to officially open the newly renovated changing rooms and kitchen at La Vallette Bathing Pools.

Mark Edgar, managing director of AFM, thanked his staff and a number of other suppliers and business that helped with the project.

AFM staff and volunteers spent six weeks stripping out and modernising the damp and antiquated facilities, with help from a number of other businesses and organisations who offered support in terms of materials and equipment. Invited guests enjoyed a champagne and buffet reception on the terrace of Island Views Café before seeing the revamped changing rooms for the first time.

‘The difference between the state of the changing rooms when we started the work and what we are giving back to the local public is quite incredible and I hope that swimmers will enjoy having somewhere more comfortable and warmer to get changed and also have the luxury of hot showers moving forwards,’ he said. Karen Girdlestone, business development and PR manager at AFM, added: ‘We are trying to give something back to the island and the local community to enjoy for years to come and will certainly be looking at more projects to help out with.’

Mr Savage, who is the oldest member of the Guernsey Swimming Club and the oldest islander to complete the Castle Swim, was thrilled with the new-look changing rooms. ‘Oh what a difference, it’s lovely eh, smashing,’ said Mr Savage.

Times are changing when it comes to the way people buy and sell their home. It’s gaining momentum in the UK and now two locals are introducing this revolution to Guernsey.

“As a vendor you want your property captured to the highest possible standard giving you the best chance of a sale.”

We’re used to shopping online, buying flights online and certainly negotiating Facebook dramas online, so why not begin the journey of selling or buying your property online? Saltrock Property believe they have the local solution… Saltrock believe professional presentation is key when selling or renting your property. The company was created by two local entrepreneurs, Tom Dawson and Luke Sheehan. With backgrounds in advertising, film and photography, Luke feels this puts them in a unique position, “I think it’s important to remember that the majority of local estate agents are not photographers. As a vendor you want your property captured to the highest possible standard giving you the best chance of a sale. With great experience in professional photography and using the latest technology we are able to capture your property at its best.”. Without the overheads of an estate agent such as high street office rental and a fleet of cars, Saltrock Property can save home sellers (and renters) thousands of pounds. For a fee of £299 your property can be listed and photographed on their website. Using online promotion, they can reach out island wide. Selling a property for £437,000, assuming 1.5% commission, represents a saving of £6,256! What do you get for your £299? Other than

the online listing you will receive social media releases, buyer inquiry connection, a digital floor plan and a for sale sticker. When it comes to signing up for the service, the modern website and simple interface make it all a bit of a doddle. A little online research can inform you on the value of your property and with the savings from commissions, it allows home owners more scope for negotiation. So you’ve got your property registered and listed your home on Saltrock property. From here buyers will contact you directly by email or phone and ask to arrange a viewing. Simple. Who better to point out the best features of your home than the person with real life experience of living there? Once a figure has been agreed the purchaser will need to instruct an Advocate, and you will need to provide them with draft Conditions of Sale. Ogier Property is a featured supplier who, for a limited time, are offering a special conveyancing fee for Saltrock Property clients. They will draft Conditions of Sale for you and guide you through the legal side of the process. Recent polls in UK have showed that 68 percent of people would now sell their home privately. Saltrock Property is bringing this new revolution to Guernsey. Visit www.saltrockproperty.gg to get your home listed today.

A DESIGN FOR REMEMBRANCE Designing public memorials is a complex and, some would say, daunting task. James Barker, Create’s Creative Director, talks about the challenges behind designing the Allied Aircrew Memorial.

Honouring the airmen who lost their lives was a creative priority for the memorial design, however the prominent position at the airport added to the pressure and structural challenges that this project presented.

flying the skies. However the potential for high winds at the airport, up to 80 miles an hour, proved to be a problem! We needed to find a way to stabilise the sculpture, without losing the integrity of the design.

Our thoughts about the design were immediately centred on the planes, we wanted it to have plenty of “wow” factor, but we were also very sensitive to the airport setting and the modern terminal building. Plus of course there were budget and technical constraints that we had to work with.

We turned to Nick Barton, a structural engineer at CBL Consulting, to help us. We decided that the steel rods would curve in, gathered by a wreath-like collar, and then rise up and out. This curve gave the impression of flight and the natural movement of an airplane and also acted to stabilise the rods in the wind.

Our concept was to recreate the airmen’s wartime missions, with the bomber plane surrounded by fighters positioned at different heights to give the impression of flight and speed.

In the final composition the central bomber plane represents the B17 Flying Fortress, an American plane. Its choice honours the 90 US airmen who lost their lives and is surrounded by eight Spitfires, the fighter planes that were used to protect the bombers as they flew their dangerous missions over Europe.

The first design centred on wartime airplanes held aloft by steel rods emerging from the ground. Vertical structures that people could walk amongst and when they looked upwards, the planes would be seen as if

The steel rods rise from a polished plaster-covered concrete base, placed on top of two polished granite bases where

the names of those who lost their lives are inscribed. We created very accurate CAD and 3D drawings which ensured the build and subsequent installation went smoothly. The memorial base of concrete with polished plaster and the granite work were completed on island and Nigel Loller developed the technical specification for the marine-grade stainless steel planes. The stylised planes are made with flat sheet stainless steel welded together and polished. The final stage of the project was the memorial dedication. For us this was an emotional event – not something you necessarily feel when designing other structures. It was a beautiful day. The stainless steel planes, which glinted in the sunlight, looked as if they were soaring into the blue sky. The US defence attaché who attended was very positive about the memorial – the final seal of approval on the design.

WHY i ? DLM Architects have recently purchased a BMW i3, a completely electric vehicle; in order to reduce our local emissions and to demonstrate we ‘practice as we preach’. The features this car offers resonate with our ethos in many ways. DLM Architects are heavily focused on sustainability, and BMW’s approach is not simply to build emission-free cars, but also to use the maximum possible amount of sustainably produced and recycled materials, and renewable energy during manufacture. Overall, 25 % renewable raw materials and recycled plastics were used in the construction of the car.

In the work we do, we try to incorporate and offer the option of a range of modern technologies in order to provide the best user experience. Many of these run passively in the background, but it allows the user to engage with those features that will best suit the way they inhabit the space. This car demonstrates an equally high level of flexibility to allow it to run as efficiency as possible but still offer a higher level of creature comforts when required. Due to the condensed mechanical arrangement, assisted by the latest micro technology, there is a generous internal space within a comparatively small and lightweight shell. The compact size and electric range is perfectly suited to our small island and the way we live. Similarly our approach as architects is to design buildings that respond to the everyday lives of the user and their site specific location.

Although, the principle of the design adopts that of a traditional car, it challenges convention in the way it looks. It’s not an expensive super car, but still turns heads due to its contemporary and fun twist on the classic features. Like the buildings we deliver, it is about subtle but progressive design, informed by the technology being utilised and the benefits that these variations can offer. Despite all the research prior to purchasing the car, it has surpassed expectations in performance, efficiency, usability and we continue to find additional features that have been incorporated. It is refreshing to see so much thought put into something, and how important even the smallest details are. This mirrors our approach to architecture. We want to surpass our clients expectations, challenge convention, reduce our impact on the environment and ensure there is unprecedented attention to every detail.

It’s a little different to what you are used to seeing, and some people won’t like that, but it’s different for all the right reasons.

Design Inspiration Gary Naftel, talks about the ability to be creative, the key to incredible design and the divine ratio, a magical number with cosmic proportions! “I like to think of Phi as the very fabric of creation; can it all come down to a simple number? So if you want to be a ‘creative’ person, why not take your inspiration from nature and apply the divine ratio.”

The ability to create something is within all of us, although the desire to create something incredible is within few. So what is the key to creating something incredible? How do we create something special that stands out? Is there a simple answer? To create something incredible you need something different! That is not true. In fact I would say you need a rule to follow, otherwise it could become too random or worse; meaningless! You can create random designs using rules, techniques or an order and create something amazing from absolutely nothing. I do believe that no matter how random the creation, it does need some form of rule or order to justify the creation itself. So what rule should you apply? Simple, pick your favourite, explore the options and push the boundaries. I am inspired by a single rule that comes from the very creation of our universe, a natural design rule that’s referred to as ‘the divine ratio’ and presented as a single number - 1.618.

‘Phi’ is a mathematical ratio which appears in nature, from the tail of a sea horse to parts of the human body. Galaxies, planets, animals and plants are created in the form of ‘Phi’, The ratio is literally found everywhere in nature and at the very core of natural creation which to me shows the true wonder of creation and why it keeps inspiring us. Did you know that the distance from your toes to your belly button is 1.618 times longer than your belly button to the top of your head? That one segment of a seashell is 1.618 times larger than the next?

If you don’t believe me take a look at one of my favorite pieces of Da Vinci’s work The Vitruvian Man. A rather cheap print of this incredible design hangs proudly in my office at work and each day this is a simple reminder of an incredible creation, a true masterpiece!

1) Draw a square 2) From the center of the base to an opposite corner draw a radius then extend the base of the square to intersect with the circle. 3)Draw Draw the rectangle 1. a square. 2. ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station. Words by MIKE HUSTON

‘...the really important thing is that we continue to work as a team and do everything we can to create Just Great Radio.’ I don’t know about you but this year is really gathering pace and we have at least got most of the worst winter weather behind us, I hope. As we are heading towards an early Easter this year we can see the “Awards” season on the horizon. Island FM will be enjoying some of the high profile celebrity ones on TV, or via social media but during the course of the next few months we will be entering a number of awards ourselves including the Awards for Achievement. It is often easy in our busy lives not to appreciate the impact and importance that the recognition of an award can bring, and it can be even harder to find the much needed time to put a good submission together.

Collectively pointing in the right direction we can achieve a lot more than if we are all going off in different directions. We don’t always get it right but we recognise how important working together is. There are many parts to our exciting business, Programming, New, Sales and no two days are the same, which keeps us all young. But actually our teamwork has to extend beyond our building and our own staff. It has to encompass our commercial clients and our listeners. Without them we don’t have a business. You only have to look at my beloved Chelsea FC this season to see the impact poor teamwork can have, very quickly and with the same personnel.

You have to be in it to win it as they say, but actually most successful businesses have to embrace teamwork to an impressive level to stand any real chance of success.

I am lucky to have a really committed team (I have to say that they will be reading this!) but it is true. They want to go the extra mile and some, and they have an attitude which enables us as a small business to have a greater impact than we would without this.

At Island FM, Teamwork is fundamental and at the core of everything we do. We have to ensure that we work together.

I do have to say that this island is exactly the same. Some may disagree but I have always believed it achieves so much for a

small island because of the way everyone works together. Over the coming months we will witness a number of acceptance speeches and a few gracious and less gracious faces pulled by unsuccessful nominees. In my experience in business and life, winning is always better than losing, and so winning awards and recognition falls in to the more favourable category. As more of our year unfolds, it would of course be nice if we do win something. Actually though the really important thing is that we continue to work as a team and do everything we can to create Just Great Radio.

ROBYN SHERWELL From captivating festival crowds across the country from Glastonbury to Wilderness Festivals, to being invited by Jo Whiley to perform for her on Radio 2 and soundtracking the trailer for the international feature film Suffragette starring Meryl Streep and Carey Muligan, Robyn Sherwell gives GSY Lifestyle the lowdown on her debut album and what she misses about home.

How did you get started in music? Did you ever think you’d get this far? I think if someone had told me ten years ago that I’d have my songs playing on the radio one day I would have laughed at them. I learned a few instruments in school, and when I was a teenager began tentatively writing songs just for myself, but I never thought then that I’d end up a musician. For a long time I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was a student at university before I decided to pursue music seriously as a singer/songwriter. I moved to London and focused on writing songs and making demos. I learned how to record, and basic production skills - enough to lay down my ideas in my tiny rented room in Camden and build on them. Getting to the point of releasing an album was a clear goal. Lots of people record and self-release music today. But I couldn’t have predicted some of the specifics of the last two years – the label support, radio support across BBC Radio 1, 2 and 6music, and of course playing at Glastonbury. Who was your first inspiration? I don’t remember it being one artist. Tori Amos, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell were all early inspirations. Later I got into Bat For Lashes and Fink and Jamie Woon. What has been the most nerve-wracking experience so far?

Pictured THE NEW ALBUM OF ROBYN SHERWELL

Performing at Glastonbury for the BBC introducing last summer was pretty nerveracking. I kept trying to think of it as no

different to any other gig, but the Glastonerves still got me. It feels significant in your career and it’s hard not to have that sitting heavily in the forefront of your mind on stage. What have you got lined up for us fans this year? Any big news? This year I will be releasing my debut album on March 25 as well as heading out on my first headline tour March 16-23. I’ll also be at some festivals over the summer. Tell us about your album that’s coming out on the 25th of March, what was your inspiration behind it? Proudest part? There’s eleven tracks on the album. They range from sparse ballads such as Tightropes to the more strident tribal sounds of songs like Islander (inspired by Guernsey). It was produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), and includes a cover of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, which was used last year in the US trailer for the film “Suffragette”. I’m proud of it as a whole. It’s a slightly giddying feeling to find something that once only existed in your head finally sitting in your hands.

Which of your songs are you most connected with / feel strongly over / proudest of and why? That’s a bit like asking a parent which child they love the most. They all came from me, I feel connected with all of them. For me, it’s more interesting to learn why the listener feels connected to a song I wrote. Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now? To be frank, it’s hard to look that far ahead as a musician still at this relatively early level. This is a tough industry, and sometimes it takes all your resilience just to keep going for another month, let alone a decade. I hope that I’m still making music and even touring in ten years’ time, but even if not, I’m glad I’ll be able to look back and say I gave it fair shot. You have been nominated for the Guernsey Press Ambassador of the year, what are your thoughts on that? It’s both deeply flattering and a bit bewildering. I love the island, it’s a part of my past and my inspiration. It’s natural for me to want to share that with people I meet. I don’t feel I’ve done anything special to deserve the nomination - I’ve just been out there working on my music, same as always. But I’m truly touched by it. It’s lovely to think that what I’m doing makes people in Guernsey proud. Do you think being from Guernsey has given you any advantages as to where you are now? I don’t think where someone is from has as much influence as the factors that give them the courage and tenacity to pursue their ambition in the first place, be it family, or passion, or an early champion of their talent. For sure, opportunities such as the Schools Music Service in Guernsey gave me fundamental musical training before even leaving school, and those skills have been a solid foundation for my music-making since. But equally, some of the most amazing players I know can’t read a note of music. The fact is that no two people start out from the same place in music, or in life for that matter. There’s no sense in comparing advantages. You start where you start. What is the main thing you miss about Guernsey? Food? Special place? People? I miss the fresh air and the scenery, and especially the ocean. It’s unsettling to grow up seeing the sea every single day and then not see it for months.

Any advice / tips, or even secrets for upcoming singers and songwriters from Guernsey? No secrets! Hard work and perseverance counts for a lot. Work on your singing, get really good, find your own voice and use it to tell your story. Truly, no one else can sing your song in the way you can. Other than that, there aren’t really any rules. I moved from Guernsey to pursue music in London, but that’s just one route.

LILA

This sassy lady sure knows how to dress. Lila’s style is inspired by her icon J-Lo, a busy on-the-go mum. She tells us that ‘no matter what, you should always find time to look good, even if it means getting up that little bit earlier’. Well Lila, if that means looking as good as you, we definitely agree!

This punk rock chick knows how to wear this camo print military jacket. Layered over her black playsuit, with loose hanging curls she definitely knows how to dress to impress.

We speak to Angele Hicks, the nail technician, about her incredible nail art design trends for 2016 ready to take the industry by storm..

Christmas is a distant memory now. Spring is officially on the way and as the days get brighter, the dark-wintery colours are now becoming the flavour of yesterday with more vibrant and bright colours begin to blossom into fashion.

neon leopard print or remarkable orange and black tiger stripes, your blossoming nails are sure to turn heads as you stand out from the crowd.

Foils Nail foils provide a completely whole new dimension when it comes to nail art. Refreshing and captivating in every way imaginable, you simply can’t fault it. Our personal favourite is the oleaginous, lubricous foil that looks very similar to the inside of an oil-slick ormer shell. Foils work wonderfully as a feature nail too when they accompany a standard block colour.

Gradients Whilst graduating one colour into another on your nails can be one of the trickier sides to nail design, the results themselves are marvellous and work absolute wonders proving they are worth the efforts in the long-haul. Such a difficult yet rewarding technique works impressively well for when it comes to combining two salient and powerful colours together to create an outstanding and worthwhile effect.

Floral With spring soon ascending and flowers beginning to fill up gardens, it’s only seems fitting that your nails are completed with floral too. Why settle for simple polka dots or a standard block colour when you can combine them with decorative floral for a more cohesive effect? With such detailed being provided at the tip, it will almost look like a bouquet of flowers is beginning to sprout from your very fingers!

ACTIVEWEAR ACTIVEWEAR TRENDS TO WORKOUT IN THIS SEASON, BECAUSE YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SWEAT IN STYLE! By SINEAD WHEADON, BARRE TRIBE

URBAN OUTFITTERS £45

We are obsessed with wearing our workout wear even when we’re not working out. The trend known as Athleisure, activewear that takes you from the gym to street, isn’t going anywhere soon. Here are some tips for updating your workout wardrobe. When buying activewear don’t skimp on quality. Always look for sweat wicking, breathable 100% opaque and multiple stretch way fabrics. As a rule always test pants for transparency, a quick downward dog in front of a mirror will inform you once and for all if you have been mooning the entire back row of your yoga class. The rules also applies for tanks and crop tops, have a good jiggle, jump about, hang upside down, and if the ‘girls’ stay put, it’s a keeper! This season look for statement prints, placement panels, geometrics and colour blocking. Think seventies nostalgia and carnival colours. If budget isn’t an issue then the futuristic sleek and technical fabrics of luxe brand, Lucas Hugh are a fashionista must have. If the purse strings are tight, LA brand Onzie, offer a huge selection of affordably-priced, colourful fun digital prints, ideal for sweaty workouts and paddle boarding. Mesh is still around and nobody does it better than Michi NY. The collection is made up of edgy mesh panel leggings and multi strap sports bras that offer a serious dose of sex appeal. Switch up your tank tops this season, opt for open back, curved drop tail hems

‘THIS SEASON LOOK FOR STATEMENT PRINTS, PLACEMENT PANELS, GEOMETRICS AND COLOUR BLOCKING. THINK SEVENTIES NOSTALGIA AND CARNVIAL COLOURS’ and cross strap details. Not only will it keep you cool, but you’ll also get to show off your toned muscles you’ve worked so hard for. Layer loose tanks over vibrant coloured crop tops with cut-out or mesh detailing. For post workout layer up in a boxy cropped sweater with cut out details, or wrap yourself up in cosy oversized fine knitwear teamed with a mirrored sunnies and sporty sneakers. Don’t forget your gym bag, complete your athleisure wardrobe with a stylish tote. Look for extra internal pockets to stow away trainers and sweaty items, and a handy yoga mat holder. A spacious gym tote will also double up as a weekend bag. Finally, if you only invest in one item go for a great pair of Beyond Yoga black leggings. Perfect for any workout and teamed with a pair of killer heels, statement jacket and layered necklaces your dinner date would be none the wise! With Winter drawing to an end and having spent some much needed down time with my young family I am ready for all that the Porsche Carrera Cup 2016 has to throw at me. Renewing my contract with multiple Championship winning team Red Line Racing it is safe to say the hard work resumes! Last week the team and I set off on the 1,800 mile journey to Granada, Spain where we spent two days testing the southern Spanish circuit, Guadix. Being the first time back in the car since my last race in 2015, there was a slight sense of anxiety as my crew member Adam belted me up to head out of pit lane. After 9 hours in the car I finished having secured myself the second fastest lap

time of the day and even made Frank (the grumpy German engineer) smile. Now focus shifts to the Media day and next test day at Brands Hatch in March before the season kicks off with its first race in April. Last year was all about gaining experience but also proving myself to be worthy of competing in the prestigious Championship. Finishing 3rd in class last year was a great achievement but this year I’m hungry for a 1st. I go into this season with a little more confidence, experience and determination to make many people around me proud. Wish me luck!

TRAFALGAR’S TASTES AND SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH From Johnny Cash to Elvis, the South US has it all. We spoke to travel specialist, Stephanie, who took a trip down south, about her experience there and why she can’t wait to go back!. Travel specialist STEPHANIE CLARKE

What was your trip? Trafalgar’s Tastes and Sounds of the South. My trip started in Nashville, we arrived into Music city in the evening our hotel was just a minutes’ walk from Broadway, the atmosphere was electric and I couldn’t wait to get involved. The next morning we made our way to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Here we had a unique look into the life and music of Johnny Cash during a private performance and discussion with Johnny and June’s Granddaughter, Chelsea Crowell. Chelsea was lovely; she entertained us with her own music as well as a few numbers made famous by her legendary family. Our Travel director then escorted us to the Historic RCA Studio B, as we walked in, Elvis was playing and it gave me Goosebumps. To think Elvis actually recorded here. The lights were dimmed in the studio as we listened to Are You Lonesome tonight (Elvis liked to sing in the dark). You can sit at his piano for a photo and stand in the “sweet spot” of the studio where he stood to record. We also visited the Ryman Auditorium, we had a back stage tour through the dressing rooms dedicated to the stars of the Ryman’s rich musical past. It was very surreal. Broadway Street is where it is happening! The Honkey Tonks all play different styles of music so there

is something for everyone. Live music is played from 11am right through until the early hours of the morning; I could have stayed in Nashville for so much longer! Everyone was sad to leave, but it was time to head to Memphis. We hit the highway to Memphis along the Mississippi Delta. Upon arrival we joined a ‘local specialist’ who shared stories about Beale Street and Sun Studios, The birth Place of Rock and Roll! We visited Sun Studios ‘The most Famous recording studio in the World’ and we stood in the exact same studio that Elvis first ever recorded. Our Next stop was Natchez, we experienced an incredible evening of Southern Hospitality at a ‘Be my Guest’ Dinner. This was hosted by Esther Elms, Esther was once named one of the top 20 females chefs in America! It was amazing! From Natchez we headed south our first stop was the Oak Alley Plantation from here we headed south to New Orleans. We joined a local specialist who took us on a tour of the French Quarter and Jackson Square. New Orleans is so vibrant, it was so different to the places we had just been. From the Voodoo to the cooking classes, this city really is a unique experience of the Southern US culture. I could talk for so long about this tripas we experienced so much with Trafalgar from the cultural insights, local specialists, be my guest dinner, and all of the included sights. All of the hotels where perfectly located and the Travel director exceeded all of our expectations.

experience

When is the best time to go? There are different festivals throughout the year which could attract people such as the Mardi Gras Parade in February or the Jazz and Heritage festival in April. I wouldn’t say there is a best time to go, but Trafalgar are always keen to put the best interests of the guests at heart, so don’t operate in July and August as the hot weather can be quite unbearable. Why did you book these places? I am a big music fan and this trip with Trafalgar presented the best way to fulfil this dream. What are the must-sees? Studio B & Sun Studios, Trafalgar’s Cultural Insight meeting Johnny Cash’s Granddaughter was really special. If you have a spare week, I would also recommend looking into adding on the infamous Mississippi River Cruise.

IMAGES Left page OAK ALLEY PLANTATION Above NASHVILLE CITY LIGHTS Below MAP OF ROUTE Bottom BOURBON STREET

wwWhat should you know about these places before you go? To be honest I didn’t know very much about these places before I travelled except for what I had seen in the Trafalgar brochure which really attracted me to the trip. The trip was fully guided and everything was arranged for me so I didn’t have to worry about a thing. The Travel Director was so knowledgeable and could answer any questions I had. Is there anything to watch out for? Dangerous places? Things not to eat? Things not to do? I didn’t feel like I had to look out for anything dangerous, I think I would have felt vulnerable if I was travelling alone. In New Orleans when walking down Bourbon Street you have to look out for the Mardi Gras beads. I did have some amazing food in New Orleans; we went to a cooking demonstration at the New Orleans School of Cooking here we had traditional Gumbo, Jambalaya and Pralines. Does it offer something to people of all ages? If so what? I think anyone who loves Music and Food would love this trip!

Would you go back there? I would certainly go back to Nashville! I could spend a week there just going from Honky Tonk to Honky Tonk listening to the live music. Whether you are a fan of minimalist concrete and glass architecture, designs that modify and extend traditional buildings or the most state-of-the-art eco homes, you will find very exciting examples hidden away here in Guernsey. How often do you slow down to gaze at some extraordinary development and wish it was yours? Well, voyeurs of architectural design are in for a treat as the organisers of the Guernsey Design Awards announce the shortlist for this year’s event reducing the 37 entries received down to 17. ‘The purpose of the awards,’ says Steve Powell of Norman Piette one of the judges, ‘is to review and honour any distinctive, original, inspirational and sustainable building design here in the island. ‘Projects eligible to enter include restoration projects, new buildings, extensions, lighting schemes, works to protected buildings and monuments and public art projects. These were judged on the quality of design, use of materials as well as the relationship to setting, sustainability and adherence to the client brief.’ The awards are a joint initiative between Norman Piette, the Guernsey Society of Architects and the Environment Department. The awards presentation evening is being held at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on Thursday 31 March. Admission is free.

1 The Mill, Steam Mill Lanes, St Martins Architect: CCD Chartered Architects Small project up to 250K Catherine Best’s Mill is a well-known landmark, as the headquarters of her jewellery business. CCD had previously designed an extension to the lower floors of the mill but in recent years the domed roof of the mill tower became a significant problem due to leaks and lack of insulation, this lead to the decision to replace it. An early decision was to open the new domed roof and a glass ceiling / floor was designed giving the owners an extraordinary view of the stars, whilst lying in the bath with the roof open.

2 Les Haut Courtil, La Percee, Castel Architect: Jamie Falla Architecture Residential renovation / extension over £250K Each of the materials and forms of construction in this private renovation were carefully considered to reduce its carbon footprint and we used local craftsmen wherever possible. This was built to exceed current building regulations and the existing and new buildings are highly insulated and designed to reduce energy consumption.

3 Horizons, York Avenue, Fort George Architect: Jamie Falla Architecture Residential renovation / extension over £250K This thoughtful remodelling of a tired 1970’s reverse plan house reflects the changing lifestyle of the modern family. A light-filled energy efficient broken plan space has been created with nooks, corners and sun decks providing the family with both privacy and quiet places to relax. The house has been designed to exceed 2020 Building and features a whole house ventilation system, an energy efficient lighting system and zone-controlled under-floor heating run off an ASHP.

4 Cobo Community Centre Architect: Lovell Ozanne & Partners Non-residential over £250K The site is located close to the Guet woodland in a very prominent location. The new building needed to relate to this rural environment and the strong links with Cobo and its pink granite. The triangular site presented challenges to get a building that would meet all the accommodation requirements while still maintaining appropriate scale and massing for the site.

5 The Crown Club at OGH Architect: Dunnell Robertson Partnership Non-residential over £250K The Old Government House Hotel had a five star rating but lacked a separate bar facility for its guests. The architects’ brief was to integrate the former Old Crown Offices into the overall design of the hotel whilst retaining and enhancing the historic elements of the listed building. Careful consideration was given to the sympathetic first floor extension creating an unobtrusive additional private function room.

6 Number 1 Jubilee Terrace Architect: Dunnell Robertson Partnership Residential new build over £250K The project involved the demolition of the former Randall’s brewery buildings with the exception of the distinctive Victorian house which fronts onto St Julian’s Avenue. This was retained and incorporated into the development of a number of prestigious apartments with the cupola creating a focal point at the junction with Les Vauxlaurens, successfully drawing the two street frontages together. Each apartment has its own distinctive feel and character, making the most of the topography, orientation and aspect. 7 Les Residence, Cobo Coast Road Architect: Tyrrell Dowinton & Associates Residential new build over £250K The architects were tasked with the job of demolishing the existing Hotel Les Carterets and replace it with a development of 13 high quality apartments with self contained basement parking, terraces and balconies with west and north views of the sea. The building was to respect its setting with careful use of high quality materials. Les Residences has been carefully designed to complete the ribbon development of domestic properties along Cobo coast road and La Mare playing fields.

8 Unit 8 Architect: Lovell Ozanne & Partners Residential renovation / extension over £250K Unit 8 is a listed, industrial building, constructed as part of the stone crushing yard previously located on North Side. The client wanted to refurbish and upgrade the structure and facilities in order to provide a good commercial unit while maintaining the unique features of the Listed building. Extensive works were undertaken to the fabric of the building including new roof coverings throughout, replacement floor structures, repointing & re-rendering of all masonry work and new floor structures to the Tower.

9 The Rockmount and La Reunion Architect: Tyrrell Dowinton and Associates Non-residential over £250K This project featured the refurbishment of the existing Rockmount and public bars, conversion of the first floor staff rooms into a fine dining restaurant, and new staff rooms, kitchen and ancillary facilities. The existing staff house at the rear of the site was also refurbished to provide 12 staff bedrooms and the car park re-organised. The limited time frame allowed for starting on site in January 2014, with the bars, staff quarters and car park operational by August 2014 and the restaurant to follow soon afterwards.

10 Rosso Bar Architect: DLM Architects Small projects up to £250K DLM were appointed to design and fabricate the bar for local pizzeria Rosso, to become the focal element. The brief was aesthetically flexible, limited only by tight spatial and time constraints. The entire bar consists of over 2000 wood off cuts and 11 different species planed smooth and oiled to bring out the natural richness of the timber. Over time the pieces will stain and age, collecting stories with every grease mark and wine stain.

11 La Frene, La Ruette, St Martins Architect: DLM Architects Small projects up to £250K La Frene was a traditional Guernsey barn. The owner wanted it converted into a compact two-bedroom home with all the luxuries of modern living while maintaining the buildings character. The result exceeded client expectation: a small high quality home designed to accommodate her needs in later life. It has provided a solution unavailable on the market today and for less expense.

12 Rocquemer, Val Au Bourg, St Martins Architect: Paul Langlois Architects Residential new build over £250K The clients wanted a comfortable 4-bed house with a subtle modern interpretation of New England styling that merged with its natural setting and maximised the spectacular views over the South Coast. The fundamental design concept was to position the main living spaces across the south elevation and for the ground and first floor decks to extend the internal spaces beyond the building line.

13 Maison D’Aval, Rue Des Caches, St Saviours Architect: CCD Chartered Architects Residential renovation / extension over £250K Constructed in circa 1350, this long house would require sensitive restoration. A 20th century concrete extension to the rear would require reworking or replacement to provide an adequate family room. The combined effect, of the traditional longhouse and extension, was a dwelling isolated from its own garden. The building in effect turned its back to the landscape. The brief was to reconcile these issues and to provide a more contemporary connection between house and garden.

14 Brockhurst, The Grange, St Peter Port Architect: CCD Chartered Architects Residential renovation / extension over £250K Dating from circa 1740 and a protected building, Brockhurst has provided a much needed rental income for the National Trust of Guernsey for the past 13 years. The tenancy break enabled much-needed repairs to be implemented, primarily halting moisture ingress and tackling the subsequent degradation. It also meant the opportunity to bring the building up to modern standards to improve its rental desirability. 15 St Peter Port Constable’s Office Architect: CCD Chartered Architects Non-residential over £250K St. Peter Port Constables, who have been based in the Constables’ Office since the mid 1800’s, were concerned about poor access to the building and the lack of a room large enough for many meetings, but the parishioners had given overwhelming support for use of the existing building to continue. CCD developed a refurbishment scheme which also involved partial demolition of a less important wing to the building, maintaining the façade in place, and extended in this area to locate a lift and ancillary accommodation. The project has allowed a much-loved building to continue to be used for the running of the parish, but with facilities appropriate for current needs. 16 La Cherterie, Rue des Fontennelles, Forest Architect: CCD Chartered Architects Residential renovation / extension over £250K CCD were commissioned by the Huxtable family to re-plan and extend their rural home in the Forest. Part of an historic Guernsey farmhouse the brief was to generate additional space for a new kitchen and enlarge the master bedroom. The scheme would optimise the flow through the house by reworking the entrance hall. The scheme responds directly to the site and builds on the geometry of the existing structure to produce a partially concealed glazed intervention that gives interplay between building and garden, whilst making the most of the sites long views.

17 Infinity Terrace and Crescent Architect: PF+A Residential New build over £250K This residential development was an awkward urban plot. The site had become tired, empty and disused and no longer able to provide commercially viable returns. The challenge was to provide enough housing units to satisfy the developers while ensuring they achieved high standards of accommodation and made a valuable contribution to the area.

SUNSEEKER TO LAUNCH THEIR SMALLEST FLYBRIDGE MOTORYACHT IN OVER A DECADE

Sunseeker unveils plans to launch its smallest flybridge model for over a decade, the new Manhattan 52, in Summer 2016. This important new model signals Sunseeker’s intentions to re-establish its strong position in an important segment of the market, confirming its commitment to producing an unrivalled portfolio of luxury performance motor yachts from 50-155 feet. The innovative new 52 foot model sets a new benchmark for the smaller flybridge format. Designed to maximize entertainment options, light and living space throughout, its hull incorporates unparalleled amounts of curved glass to emphasize its sleek lines as well as bringing the outside in. It sets the design direction for a new wave of Manhattan models that will be introduced over the coming years.

Throughout the main deck there is a strong focus on creating fun and easy to use sociable spaces. Its layout flows effortlessly from the astonishingly spacious bow seating and sunbathing area – a unique and unrivalled feature for a boat in this class – to the completely open cockpit space and upper aft galley. The open layout continues right through to the wonderfully well-equipped bathing platform and transom, where an optional barbecue, full shower and range of other features truly set the Manhattan 52 apart from its peers. The galley doubles up as a bar and opens up the whole main deck as an entertainment space, with hinged glass doors opening upwards and outwards to create a unique inside/outside environment for owners to enjoy hosting family and friends. The reconfigured helm seating area is another new feature that provides exceptional space for entertaining and socializing. MARCH 2016. DESIGN ISSUE. #02.#02. MARCH 2016. THETHE DESIGN ISSUE.

The keyboard is clearly the USP of this phone, although not being used to it so much myself, the challenge is going to be convincing people who have moved onto virtual keyboards to come back to this. However I suspect there are still plenty of people who haven’t taken the jump and I’m sure that is where the market will be for this handset. It’s been ages since I’ve had a slider phone - all the rage back in the Noughties. If you push the screen two thirds of the way up the handset will complete the sliding action for you - nice design feature and something quite comforting in that.

GSY LIFE TOP TIP MARCH 2016 by Matt of Airtel-Vodafone

What’s the best Pay-as-you-go deal for me? A lot people prefer to be on Pay-as-you-go rather than contract for their mobile phone as they find it easier to control their spend. Once the credit is gone it’s gone, so what things should you consider when choosing a Pay-as-you-go SIM card? What do you use your phone most for - texts, calls or data? All the local providers offer free bundles ie calls, texts, data on certain value top-up so compare and contrast before you choose Compare how long the free bundles are valid and if that fits in with your usage patterns, as if you do not use these freebees within a certain time period you will lose them If you are not a frequent user then the top up freebees may not be as relevant to you so worth comparing the standard call text and data charges If you are not happy with your current arrangements, remember that’s it easy to switch and you keep your existing number

#02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

The keyboard itself registers my thumb touch easily and performs basic tasks easily enough with one hand. Although for more intensive tapping I found that two hands are required. But as far as I’m aware it’s the best physical keyboard on the market and even though it runs Android OS, the full Qwerty keyboard will be a big plus for the diehard business user. BlackBerry’s traditional Achilles heel has been its limited choice of App’s but the new Android operating system overcomes that, as well as BlackBerry adding its own little extras. BlackBerry Hub plugs all incoming messages into one App and there are some good shortcuts on the home screen to the things you need most, like composing a mail. The design is good, probably the best looking BlackBerry I have ever seen. The matt black and silver buttons are still there but it has more curves which makes it feel a lot thinner than it actually is. Not only does it look good, but it feels good and my chums at Airtel-Vodafone tell me it’s built well too, so I’m sure the business boys will love it. But will it stand side to side with the Apple and Samsung big boys to be the saviour of BlackBerry? Time will tell. Available at Airtel-Vodafone from £30.90 on the Power 125 Plan.* (Price correct at time of going to print.)

#02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? This is a hot topic at the moment and we all have an opinion on it. Should I stay in my current home and extend or, should I sell and move up the property ladder? So what’s the case supporting buying a house in the current climate? At first glance the figures don’t look great because property prices are in decline however, if a vendor accepts an offer on their property under asking price and they in turn have a similar amount reduced from a property they wish to purchase then it may not be so much of an issue. Our records show that first time buyers are having offers accepted on properties that were out of reach in recent years and they will also pay less on their interest rates than they would have had to a couple of years ago. We are for the first time in a generation seeing ‘value’ on the property market which is certainly something that I have not seen in my 16 years in the local mortgage industry. Or, should I stay and extend my current property or, indeed, simply move my mortgage to avail of better interest rates available? Both Skipton and NatWest are advertising their lowest ever rates and are, along with most other lenders in Guernsey very much open for business. According to a recent local Lloyds Bank seminar, markets are predicting interest rates not moving much beyond 2% for the next 25 to 30 years so again this is a great time to borrow. So If you are looking to buy your first home, renovate, move up the property ladder or just avail of the best rates available, feel free to contact the team at Oracle where we have everything you need to assist you, all under one roof.

Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print. This month we have a feature on Kitchens. Turn the pages to find out what's hot and not when Caroline Mauger went out to explore...

HOW'S IT LOOKING OUT THERE? Alex Ford, Managing Director After working in the property industry in Guernsey for a number of years Alex acquired Sarnia Estate Agents and has used his extensive catalogue of contacts and reputation to provide unparalleled client satisfaction.

With 3 lending banks offering 90% mortgages we have seen an extremely busy start to 2016. In January alone Sarnia achieved 16 agreed sales all now signed up for completion in the coming months. There is no magic secret behind this successful start to the year, but more to do with vendors across the board adjusting their asking prices to attract interest and purchasers making good use of the mortgage products currently available on the market. Across the board the signs are good as mortgage brokers reporting to us that they are seeing more clients through their doors than this time last year.

Sarnia Estate Agents have a combined 41 years of experience in property with an unsurpassed reputation for professionalism and expertise. They offer a very wide selection of property in Guernsey with proactive staff excelling in sales, lettings and property management.

Contrary to what the Guernsey Press want you to believe the signs are positive for property sales this year. Granted the high asking prices of yesteryear are no more but selling and buying in the same market is helping home owners move across the board. I echo what some of my colleagues have been saying for a few years now and that is “Government needs to be providing a deposit scheme for first-time buyers” with the correct marshalling this would lead to a stimulated Local Market without a dramatic rise in house pricing.

Mourant Ozannes’ highly skilled and experienced Guernsey property law team is focused on providing expert residential and commercial property advice and a truly personal service. Combining an enviable speed of response with technical expertise, Mourant Ozannes work tirelessly on your behalf and keep you fully informed at every stage of your transaction.

In summary, we have plenty reasons to be positive as a buoyant property market will stimulate the general market as well. The benefits will be felt by all islanders so I look forward to what promises to be an exciting 2016.

Mark Torode, Partner An Advocate with more than 10 years’ experience at the Guernsey Bar, whose client base was founded on a vast network of contacts but which has grown due to his reputation for dynamism and problem-solving.

WHAT’S HOT IN THE KITCHEN?

By Caroline Mauger

A new kitchen is a big investment so you want to get it right. With innovative design and new technologies there’s a lot to consider, so we sought advice from two experts and asked them, ‘What’s hot in kitchens in 2016?’

Channel Island Ceramics have come a long way since they opened in 1978, and they’ve seen many kitchen trends come and go. Their extensive showroom is jampacked with displays which illustrate some of the myriad possibilities available in kitchen design. The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home: it’s a social space where we cook, eat, entertain and study, and it makes a statement about our lifestyle. If space allows, a kitchen diner is what most of us aspire to – it fits the way we live now and transcends personal tastes.

As far as styles go, you can choose to go contemporary or pick something timeless. Martyn Bachelet at C.I Ceramics is enthusiastic about their newest offering, Edwin Loxley traditional kitchens. This high-end brand is the epitome of versatility, with a bespoke service that goes way beyond a choice of finishes, handles and worktops. ‘A mix of oak or walnut with light painted units looks stunning, as the wood really warms it up,’ says Martyn. Contemporary options include modestly priced Mobalpa and top-notch SieMatic. Whilst the high gloss look is still popular, a matt finish is more forgiving if you’re worried about fingerprints. Mobalpa’s matt lacquer paint finishes have a lovely, soft feel and are available in a wide range of colours. Soft-closing cupboards and drawers make a real difference in the kitchen and, whilst these have been available in modern designs for some time, Martyn believes that C.I Ceramics are the only company on the island to offer these in traditional furniture. Lighting is big news in kitchens, with LED technology providing interesting options such as coloured lights behind floating wall units. Masterchef has clearly influenced our cooking, as the latest must-have is an AEG steam oven with a vacuum packer for sous-vide cuisine. C.I Ceramics also has a gorgeous range of state-of-the-art Gaggenau appliances – a quartet of these would be on any cooking fan’s wish list.

When it comes to floor tiles the bigger the better; they create a spacious feel which is further enhanced if you go for units that float above the floor. ‘We also like to avoid putting in units right up to the ceilings, as they shrink the look of the whole kitchen,’ advises Martyn. If you prefer timber floors why not consider ceramics that look just like wood? Highly durable, they’ll last a lifetime even if you dance on them in stilettos! Channel Island Ceramics offer a complete service and have their own installation team. As Martyn assures, ‘Every job is project managed; we’re in every day checking that everything is going well, taking away the worry for our clients.’

Cucine Interiors is a boutique company that does things a little differently – no showroom, just a personal service that starts with a conversation in your home. Terry Lowe has over 20 years’ experience and he has been in love with Italian design since he first encountered it – he even rides a Vespa scooter. He believes that ‘German kitchens are great quality but the Italians have the edge on creativity, combining style and aesthetics.’ ‘Kitchens are mere boxes, it’s how we translate that box into something living that counts. When you come up with a design you’re telling a story about the client and the way they live,’ says Terry. After getting to know the client, Terry will provide several concept plans and produce a 3D visual. Although Cucine do traditional designs, they are most renowned for their modern kitchens: ‘The look is clean and minimal with contemporary lines.’ Terry is particularly passionate about finishes, and hot for 2016 are distressed finishes, giving an industrial feel. ‘There’s a real plethora of finishes available – what looks amazing is the juxtaposition of clean lines with vintage veneers. I’m currently working on an exciting project using a beautiful vintage knotted oak,’ he explains. Technological advances mean that ‘laminate’ is no longer a dirty word.

Fenix is a nanotech matt laminate made in Italy (of course), currently available in 10 colours and a variety of textures. White will always be a classic choice for the kitchen but all shades of grey are popular. If you want to introduce a stronger colour, Terry advises focusing it on the furniture, upholstery or lighting, as it can easily be changed. Extraction might not be something you’ve considered but Cucine certainly will. A huge extractor can obstruct your view but now extraction can be housed in the ceiling or even within worktops. Terry confirms that clever lighting can really up the wow factor, and you can rely

#02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

on a professional to think of the internal mechanisms that you can’t see, but which will make the heart of your home a harmonious place to be. Terry is determined to exceed his clients’ expectations and he enjoys listening to their ideas whilst making suggestions of his own. ‘It’s not all about me, I firmly believe clients do know what they want, they just need moderately directing!’ he says. So if your kitchen is ripe for a revamp, 2016 could be the year to go for it.

"...I firmly believe clients do know what they want, they just need moderately directing!"

Cucine has provided stylish and contemporary kitchens, bedrooms and living spaces to Guernsey homes for over six years. The company takes a unique approach to business and wants its clients to ‘think outside the box’. For this reason, there is no showroom – Design Director, Terry Lowe, strongly believes that showrooms limit vision and imagination, especially when there is such a vast array of finishes available: “We don’t want to restrict a client to a choice of what’s on display, it should be far more individual to them.” Instead, Cucine relies on its impressive portfolio of projects to speak volumes about style, colour and finish. Visits to previous installations can also be arranged. Every single Cucine kitchen, bedroom or living area is different. But they all demonstrate the high standards of quality and styling that come from Cucine’s commitment to sourcing products from leading European manufacturers, particularly Italian. Working with Cucine is exciting and organic. Terry not only familiarises himself with the space to be transformed, he takes time to understand each client’s lifestyle, needs and desires – what they want to achieve by their investment. Once the design is approved, it’s time to explore finishes to create the final look and then the installation itself.

BUSINESS. AWARDS.

GUERNSEY’S BUSINESS OF THE YEAR REVEALS A FEW SECRETS OF ITS SUCCESS It’s the biggest provider of new mortgages in Guernsey, has a growing expat business, and has recently topped £1 billion in deposits from local and international savers. Skipton International was named Guernsey Business of the Year at the Awards for Achievement in February, a success that helps recognise how far the bank has come in a relatively short period. As well as its strong business proposition, and high level of involvement in the community, Skipton has sponsored both Guernsey’s largest fundraising event. The ‘Skipton Swimarathon’, and Guernsey’s first arts festival, the ‘Skipton Arts Festival’ - the win still came as a surprise. Jim Coupe, Managing Director, Skipton International, said: “We were all absolutely delighted to win Business of the Year. It’s a huge achievement and shows the recognition our team members deserve for all their hard work for making the company the success it is today. We were up against a quality shortlist and we are all very proud and honoured to win.” Skipton International has grown steadily since 2009 when it was formed through the amalgamation of Skipton Guernsey and Scarborough Channel Islands. By the end of 2015 Skipton reached £1.075 billion of deposits – equivalent to the 12th largest building society in the UK.

#02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

Jim said: “Entering the awards reminded us how far we had come as a company in just a few years. It was satisfying to see we had a good proposition over all the relevant categories and this was something we were able to communicate to the judging panel.” Skipton’s team has expanded by 40% in the past three years and the bank will be moving offices in April to accommodate new staff, and create a flagship office. “Every year our staff members complete an employee engagement survey, giving them the opportunity to give valuable feedback. The Management Committee takes this on board and uses comments from the survey to further improve our working environment. We believe Skipton is a great company to work for, as evidenced by just 5% staff turnover for each of the last 4 years. “We are opening a new office, which will provide a much improved customer experience, and we will continue to recruit and expand the team.” Skipton has been the biggest provider of new mortgages for house purchases in Guernsey since 2010 and is now also the second largest provider of mortgages

Jim Coupe, Managing Director,

in Jersey too. A development which has helped the Guernsey-registered bank become one of the Channel Island’s true pan-island successes.

“WINNING IS NOT THE END OF THE CHAPTER. WE ARE ON A JOURNEY AND WE KNOW THE ROUTE WILL CONTINUE TO BE CHALLENGING....”

Jim said: “Being remote from Jersey has been a challenge, so two years ago we engaged our first mortgage sales person in Jersey. This has been very successful and we are now looking to recruit a second sales person as we continue to expand accessibility for mortgage customers. “The Guernsey housing market is still fragile but fundamentally the Guernsey economy is solid, with low unemployment levels. We have a constrained supply of properties and we see the medium term market in Guernsey to be solid. In the short term you can’t take one quarter in isolation, but we anticipate it will be a buyers’ market for at least the early part of the year. “We have to recognise that the Guernsey and Jersey housing markets are very different, and ensure we offer propositions and approaches for each. Being a local firm we are able to make decisions about both markets separately so we can meet the needs of customers in both islands efficiently. Customer service is a key part of Skipton’s strategy for success. Skipton International has been at least commended by Moneyfacts for the past six years, winning on two occasions. Independent research from Feefo shows 97% of customers rate Skipton’s service as Good or Excellent.

Pictures courtesy: Chris George Photography

Jim said: “Our Feefo results speak for themselves and are something we are very proud of. Customer service remains at the forefront of our proposition and we will continue expanding our online propositions. “Winning is not the end of the chapter. We are on a journey and we know the route will continue to be challenging. We will continue our lending in the Channel Islands and continue growing our lending in the UK through expat buyto-let mortgages, which delivers income back to Guernsey.”

Invest with Bob Who are investments for? There is a misconception that investments are exclusively for wealthy people and that for the majority of us there are only a few, low-interest savings options. The reality is very different and you don’t need lots of zeroes at the end of your bank balance to use investment managers. At Ravenscroft, our minimum investment amount, via our Huntress fund range, is £5,000 and through these funds we can help a wide range of different people. Before you invest, you need to ask yourself three important questions. What do you want to achieve, how long have you got and what is your attitude towards risk? Ideally, we like to sit down with each investor to understand their objective – to grow capital or generate additional income - their timeframe and their attitude to investing. It is worth pointing out though, that you really need to be thinking in terms of years, not months, when it comes to investing. Markets can be volatile, especially in the short term, and so you need to be able to let the ups and downs average out over time. One key question for all investors is how comfortable they are with the process of investing. Everyone has a different attitude towards risk and you need to discuss with your investment manager how comfortable you are with the investment strategy being proposed. Generally speaking, the higher the targeted return of a strategy, the more the capital value will bounce around along the way. For example, how comfortable would you feel with a quarterly statement showing a drop of 5 or 10%? No matter what your objective, how long you have or what your risk profile is, there will be an investment to suit you. All of our funds are based on long-term global trends – emerging consumers, global brands, healthcare, technology, energy and agriculture. Plus, they are fully flexible, which means you can increase or reduce the size of your investment or change your investment strategy without incurring significant costs.

Case studies: Claire wants to invest some inheritance to save towards her first house. It will take Claire three years to save for a deposit and she isn’t prepared to take a lot of risk. The Huntress Global Income Fund would be the option with the lower risk and by re-investing the income received, it could provide her with some shorter-term capital growth. She could also add to the Fund as and when she requires. David wants to invest his redundancy for his retirement but also use some for a family holiday to celebrate his 60th in 2020. David has 10 years before retirement so could tolerant a bit more risk while aiming for a higher return. He also wants to take out a lump sum for the holiday. The Huntress Global Growth Fund, which invests predominantly into global equities via funds, would meet his need for growth and flexibility.

‘One key question for all investors is how comfortable they are with the process of investing.’

If you want to discuss investing with Ravenscroft Investment Management, then please feel free to call a member of our team on 732769

James wants to use his bonus to start saving for his baby’s university education. As the money isn’t needed for at least 17 years, the Huntress Global Blue Chip Fund, which invests into approximately 25 global blue chips in line with Ravenscroft Investment Management’s investment themes, is ideal. Designed for the long-term, the Fund taps into the growth potential of global equity markets while benefiting from these businesses’ consistent returns of capital.

The insurance broker sold and renewed 151 policies last year and donated £10 from each to the GSPCA, bringing the donation to £1,510. ‘Caring for around 300 animals a day and helping in excess of 3,000 a year, we are always looking at ways to raise funds to help those in need and it is amazing that Rossborough have supported us with the GSPCA Pet Insurance, which has helped raise invaluable funds,’ said Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager. Rossborough launched its GSPCA pet insurance scheme in 2014 and raised £400 for the charity that year. Director Tony De Sousa said pet insurance was increasingly popular. ‘It’s really important as you never know when your beloved pet may become extremely ill and require life saving veterinary treatment, which can be very expensive. Pet insurance can give you peace of mind in these difficult times,’ he said. ‘We are very proud to be able to help the GSPCA in its care of these sick animals. We always like to help out local charities charities and organisations where our donations can make a real difference.

A GROUP of 11 senior managers from the Channel Islands have spent a week in Maastricht as part of their master in business degree. The nine from Guernsey and two from Jersey are a year through their two year, part-time course which is run by the GTA University Centre in association with the University of Southampton. They joined a team of international students from China, America, Turkey, Argentina, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea for the week-long visit which aims to provide an international context to the skills and knowledge gained during the first part of the course. ‘Business today is truly global. The speed and reach of modern communications means that any business can work with customers and suppliers outside of the islands and many are already doing this,’ said Chris Edwards from the GTA University Centre. ‘It is essential for the Channel Islands that we have a workforce that understands how to benefit from global markets. An MBA is acknowledged as one of the most effective ways of training the next generation of senior managers and is often referred to as an internationally recognised passport to a successful career in business

management. All of the students have spoken highly of the experience and said they benefited enormously from having the opportunity to spend a week learning more about successful companies and solving business problems with a truly international group of students.’ The group attended a series of morning lectures in the Dutch city followed by visits to companies where they were exposed to real live issues and tasked to find solutions as part of a mixed international team. The group also visited the European Commission in Brussels to gain a policy perspective on issues surrounding global and European business. ‘We covered so many different topics, capturing every angle of business but because of the theories and modules we had already covered in the first year, we understood it far more,’ said Paul Cosgrove, chief operating officer at TMF Group in Jersey who said a visit to a niche wine producer was one of the highlights. ‘That was a living example of everything we had learnt. Hearing about, and seeing the individual experiences of the companies we visited meant that we explored different routes that we wouldn’t have done by staying in a classroom. It’s one of the modules which has been the most beneficial.’ Rudi Le Roux, chief operating officer at Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited, said the trip made him think more about the Channel Islands. ‘I have realised how international Guernsey and Jersey are. Most of the organisations we are working for are global and we are just one small part – this trip has made me more aware of how important culture is when dealing with colleagues and clients,’ he said. The students now need to complete an individual assignment and a group assignment following their trip. They will complete their lectures in June and then have six months to complete their dissertation. Mr Le Roux said anyone considering starting the next MBA in September would not regret it.

GFSC ADDRESSES GUERNSEY ASSOCIATION OF COMPLIANCE OFFICERS AFM STAFF SHED LBS FOR £’S IN AID OF JONAH APPEAL STAFF from AFM lost a total of 10 stone in weight during January to raise money to fund lifesaving treatment for local teenager, Jonah Gillingham. 18 members of staff from the leading offshore facilities management company lost an average of just over half a stone each to raise money for Jonah. The teenager is suffering from a potentially devastating illness known as aHUS, an ultra-rare blood disease affecting first the kidneys and then other organs and requires expensive treatment off-island. ‘After the Christmas and New Year festivity binge, drinking and eating, it was felt that some of us, including myself, needed to shed a few pounds and one way of encouraging everyone to do this was to make it fun and help to raise money for a charity – so we chose the Jonah Fund,’ said Karen Girdlestone, business development & PR manager for AFM. ‘A joining fee of £5 was paid by each of the team and for each pound in weight that was shed, AFM put in £1. If any of the dieters put on weight during the month, they had to pay a penalty and add £3 per pound of their own money, so this gave them all more of an incentive to lose weight.’ Participants had their first official weigh-in when they returned to work on 4 January and during the month they managed to lose a total of 139lbs – one pound shy of 10 stone. In addition to the £139 donated by AFM to reflect the weight loss, one of the AFM staff, Ian Domaille, also donated an additional £20 and participants paid £85 in joining fees, bringing the total raised to £244. The biggest loser was Lee Taylor, who lost an amazing 23lbs, with Lee Matthews losing a stone. The leading woman was Raimonda Reid, who shed 9lbs over the month, followed by Rosie Perkins and Linda Perkins, who each lost 8lbs. AFM also held a couple of dress down days on the run-up to Christmas and the funds collected will be added to the pot and given to the charity to help Jonah in his quest to lead a normal life.

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission’s (GFSC) director of enforcement, Simon Gaudion, took part in a well-attended session with members of the Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers (GACO) to discuss the GFSC’s decision-making process in relation to enforcement action. The interactive talk focussed on various anonymised situations that the GFSC had dealt with over the past year, with attending GACO members voting on what they considered to be the appropriate action for a compliance officer or board of directors in respect of each scenario. The session was also an opportunity for members to provide feedback to the regulator as to whether the compliance decisions made on behalf of the industry by the GFSC had been appropriate. Carey Olsen partner and chairman of the GACO, Mark Dunster, said: “Regulation is not a one way street and it is particularly helpful to be able to give feedback to Simon. Both the GFSC and industry must set rules that are fixed as well as realistic in practice. Both sides of the equation must be in balance to produce the best result for Guernsey.” The seminar highlighted that enforcement action taken against individuals under GFSC regulatory supervision could result in severe damage to their career and/or firm but that this needed to be countered with consideration for the reputation of the Bailiwick as a whole if firms were not perceived to be taking their compliance obligations seriously.

YUKON ARCTIC ULTRA 300 to the freezing temperatures, which reached minus 35 at times! At 10.30am (Local time) on the 4th February the 300 mile race began, with the first checkpoint at 26 miles. Apart from dealing with the freezing temperatures and distance they also dragged behind them their pulks containing food, tents, sleeping bags and medical/survival kit. Michael reached 207 miles and was pulled out of the race due to injury by the medics who considered there was the possibility of infection and due to the remoteness of the race did not want him to take further risks. Despite the disappointment it was an amazing achievement to get so far.

The Yukon Arctic Ultra (YAU) is a 300 mile foot race through freezing conditions; the race is over 8 days, through frozen lakes, rivers and vast forests. February 2016 saw Michael Haenel and Brian Bougourd from Cazenove Capital Management taking on the YAU 300. The team originally included Julian Winser; just hours before departure Julian suffered a bereavement in the family and was therefore was unable to travel. The charity the team have chosen to support is the Duke of Edinburgh Award, in Guernsey, with a focus on encourage the under privileged and harder to reach individuals to participate in the Award.

In the build-up to the ultra the trio walked many miles around Guernsey’s coasts, cliff paths and lanes, alongside the odd trip to the UK and Norway. Occasionally Julian was spotted pulling a tyre along Vazon. Another challenge for the trio was sourcing all the correct clothing, food, sleeping bags, shoes, and gloves (inner and outer) pulks (a sled used to carry supplies) and travel bags. Once in Whitehorse, the starting point of the race, Brian and Michael had to spend a couple of days on survival training courses, learning how to safely start fires and use mini stoves. As part of the training they had to also spend time in the surrounding area acclimatising

Brian continued on at a steady pace and apart from extreme tiredness, sore feet and hallucinations, reached the finish line in a remarkable 6 days, four hours and 49 minutes! Completing the 2016 Yukon Arctic Ultra 300 in an amazing 6th place. The pair were reunited again in Whitehorse on the 7th day, they enjoyed a very well deserved beer, or two! Currently the amount of money raised for the Duke of Edinburgh is around ÂŁ47,700.

LISA VIDAMOUR

Group Operations Manager 1st CENTRAL Just over four years after being established in the island, the company sold its millionth car insurance policy and has a customer base of more than 300,000. With 1st CENTRAL having just received the Employer of the Year Award, we put Lisa under the spotlight to answer a few, more probing questions.

er

y Emplo - What is it like to work for you?

1st CENTRAL is a great place to work.

When I joined the company three years ago we had only six employees; three years later we have more than 30. We’ve just won Employer of the Year at the Guernsey Awards for Achievement, which is a great recognition of the value we put on our staff. - What do you as a company stand for?

1st CENTRAL has a strong community

conscience. We strive to improve the communities in which we work, however we can. - How does your company contribute to island life? Last year we did our first beach clean at Petit Port, and we are adopting a beach to clean regularly for 2016. We are very proud supporters of Liberation Day, the Air Display and the Proms on the Pier. Last year we brought Lennie the Train over for Liberation Day and will be doing

something equally as exciting again this year. We have also just provided the primary school children of Amherst and Vauvert with high visibility bag tags to help to promote road safety. - How do you ensure your employees are happy? We go to great lengths to recruit people who fit culturally, I think this goes a long way to ensuring we all get along. We also have various health and wellbeing incentives every month, and help our employees in any way we can through life’s many twists and turns. - What was your best personal mistake? I really wanted to play the drums when I was younger and bought a kit at a car boot sale. I set it up on the landing at home and very quickly became an annoyance to everyone. This led to the sale of my drum kit and subsequent purchase of an electric guitar (without an amplifier). Over the years I’ve been in many bands, most recently The Space

Pirates of Rocquaine and The Swallows. Nothing against drummers but I’m very glad I ended up at the front. - As an island what should we do more of? We should get out of our cars more. I try to cycle to work as often as I can, not only does this mean I get an hour’s worth of exercise it also means I have time to think and plan out the day ahead. Unfortunately you do, inevitably, encounter fumes and hold ups. - What makes you love Guernsey? It’s a great place to bring up children, safe, beautiful and full of opportunity. I’m lucky to live in St Peter’s where there is a fantastic sense of community, lots of lovely walks and the best curry house. I’m also always amazed at the pool of talent we have, it’s great to know that my kids are likely to be inspired by someone who shares the same 24 square miles as them at some point in their lives.

WHAT ON EARTH IS A BULL AND A BEAR – AND WHERE DOES AN OSTRICH COME INTO IT? Words by Tiffany Gervaise-Brazier

“May the odds be forever in your favour.”

#02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

BUSINESS. INVESTMENT.

As a relative financial market novice – far removed from the dizzying heights of the Warren Buffetts of the world – I have ventured to dip my toe into the realm of financial commentary from the perspective of a 22 year old graduate. As I embark on my new career, I feel compelled to write a little piece for those of you in your twenties who would like to invest, but are perhaps intimidated because you may not fully understand the lingo. Perhaps you, like me, keep seeing references in articles to bulls and bears (and even ostriches) while wondering what on earth any of this has to do with money?! Without being ‘that’ person who says “investing is actually really simple” and then proceeds to talk in another language full of technical jargon, I should clarify that, essentially, investing means putting your money to work for you. Societal norms dictate that you earn an income by getting a job and working, which is exactly what most of us do. However, if you want to earn more money, you have to work more hours – and there is (thankfully) a limit to how many hours a day we can work. At this point, we can’t clone ourselves so that we can work more jobs. However, what we can do is send our money out to work for us. This way, whilst we are working, partying or shopping on ASOS, we can also be earning money. For those of you who have seen the famous film “Wall Street”, you’ll know that money never sleeps…but that doesn’t mean that you can’t.

Putting your money to work can increase your earning potential whether or not you receive a pay rise, decide to work overtime or get a promotion. This includes putting money into stocks, bonds and funds, among many other things. Sometimes people use jargon such as “investment vehicles” to describe these options, when what they really mean is “a way to invest”. The point is that it doesn’t matter which method you choose for investing your money, the goal is always to put your money to work hoping that it earns you a return. It’s pretty easy to relate to the fact that people invest because they want to increase their freedom and afford the things they want in life; however, what I’ve already learnt in my short career so far is that investing is becoming increasingly more of a necessity.

99

In the face of onerous student loans, relatively low-paying entry-level positions and a lack of budgeting experience, young adults often face financial challenges. If I had a pound for every time an influencing adult in my life told me to start saving for a house or, dare I say it, retirement, I would be half-way to buying said house and early retirement! The problem is that those years seem such a long way off compared to the short-term purchases that could be made now. Consequently, any investing decisions tend to be delayed until our financial situation becomes more stable. However, the irony is that young people have a singular advantage in the investing world – even with that university debt, the cost of moving away from home and starting-level salaries – purely because they have that most precious of investing variables: time.

Source: Business Insider/Andy Kiersz

This is illustrated really simply in the chart above, which shows the difference between Emily, who started investing at 25, and Dave, who started saving at 35. Ultimately, Emily contributes around 33% more than Dave over the course of her career, but ends up with almost twice as much wealth as Dave does. For those of you who may be reading this and thinking that hindsight is a wonderful thing, it’s still not too late!

F #02. MARCH 2016. THE DESIGN ISSUE.

BUSINESS. INVESTMENT.

100

In terms of investing, time is a far more valuable commodity than any that can be bought and sold on the FTSE 100. I can’t emphasise enough that it’s not how much money you have at this stage, rather it is how much time you have left to invest. This concept of time being on your side is termed compounding (short for compound interest, which probably went in and out of your consciousness during a statistics class at some point) and allegedly described as “the eighth wonder of the world” by Albert Einstein. I don’t know about you, but I definitely want in on any wonder of the world if it makes me money. At this point, I hope you already feel a lot wealthier than when we started. Compounding, simply put, is the ability to grow an investment by reinvesting the earnings and, as mentioned earlier, puts your money to work. By continuously reinvesting your earnings over time, you are exponentially increasing your return on investment. Moreover, history demonstrates that

investing returns significantly more than bank interest on your money over the same period. So, given the current interest rate climate, there has never been a better time to start investing. Of course – and this is where my new career intrudes – there is always risk in investing; indeed, without risk there can be no return. But in the long term, that precious element of time gives your investments the ability to ride out the effects of volatility associated with market crashes and short-term booms. The key is to not be drawn into chasing returns. Personally, I have found it hard to come to terms with the fact that my hard-earned money could potentially end up in an investment worth less than its original cash value, but again that is short-term thinking. The sad reality is that by not doing anything with your money, your cash loses value due to the corrosive effect of inflation. Even with interest rates at almost zero, cash loses value over time, and £10,000 in a savings account today will very

definitely not have the same buying power in 40 years’ time. Ask your parents if you want to know something about how far money has gone over their lifetime. Just make sure you’ve got an hour to spend first! In summary, there is an ocean of investment tools out there, but you have to avoid allowing its vast expanse to overwhelm you. The bottom line is that you are condemned to losing money by not doing anything with it – and we all have to start somewhere. Try not to drown in the financial jargon that floods the media and remember that, for now, time is on your side. In the words of President Snow: “may the odds forever be in your favour”. Happy investing!

Aladdins Cave is the best Independent Toy Retailer in Britain LEADING local retailer, Aladdins Cave, has been voted 2016 Independent Toy Retailer of the Year at the 51st Toy Industry Awards. Organised by the British Toy & Hobby Association (BTHA) with the Toy Retailers Association (TRA) – the awards were presented following the first day of the 63rd annual Toy Fair which recently took place at Olympia in West London. ‘Toy of the Year’ was awarded to Pie Face, whilst Lego were awarded ‘Supplier of the Year’. But it was the local family-owned business - Aladdins Cave - which was awarded ‘Independent Toy Retailer of the Year’. Jason Mahy, joint Managing Director of Aladdins Cave, said winning the award was testimony to the way the business and its 49 staff have worked together

to provide customers with excellent value and choice backed up by friendly, personal service. ‘Congratulations to our sales team who deserve this award in recognition of their hard work. We have very exciting plans to further improve the store over the coming months, and this award will only help to strengthen our resolve to go on pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve,’ he said. Phil Ratcliffe, Chairman of the BTHA, said it was pleasing to see an increase in entries this year, especially from the independent sector and UK department stores. ‘The judges deliberated long and hard to find this year’s winners because of the very high standard of entries received,’ he added.

Alan Simpson, Chairman of the TRA, added: “Those companies who were selected by our panel as worthy winners this year have each made unique contributions to the success of our industry with new standards of excellence in licence marketing, toy design, innovation and service.’ Aladdin’s Cave is one of Guernsey’s real local retail success stories. Established by Eric and Margaret Mahy in 1979, the business has expanded from its humble beginnings as a camping and outdoor store to now span over 40,000 sq ft with over 20,000 products, including the largest selection of toys on the island. Aladdin’s Cave sells everything from toys, nursery, homewares and furniture, to electricals and cookware.
