NOTE

THE BEST ISSUE YET! (well in my opinion anyway)

Balance isn’t just for tightrope walkers or for us girls walking down mill street in heels. Food, drink, home, work and life, it all needs balancing.

We speak to Helen Green of Saffery Champness about achieving a work-life balance (goodness knows we need one of those around deadline) and recognize a local hero for their work in the community. It’s always good to laugh and we were lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with the king of one-liners Mr Milton Jones; for those of you who don't know who he is check him out on YouTube, he will definitely put a smile on your face. We talk about balancing interiors in your home with Penelope Hope and we also get gin-tastic with Simon McKenzie, head chef at the OGH, who has created a three-course meal paired with three delicious gins. Along with our regulars, we’ve got two new businesses that have recently set up on the island and seem to be pushing the boundaries. We wish them luck. Lest we forget, we snuck into Barbados for Papped. Were you caught in there? You’d better double check! As well as all of that, this month is also our biggest one yet and with that in mind, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved and all of the time and effort they have put in. We couldn’t do it without you. So without blabbing on too much, turn the page, have a read and let us know what you think. Happy November.

UPFRONT. PHOTO OF THE MONTH.

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH Name: Father and Daughter Surfers Place: Vazon Photographer: Tim Langlois Living by the coast pretty much all of my life, I could possibly be forgiven for taking sunsets for granted but each one has its own unique qualities which never fail to amaze me. Throughout the summer months in particular I try to get down to the west coast beaches as often as possible to try and capture some of the stunning scenes that we are so blessed with here. One particular evening this summer, all the ingredients for the perfect shot came together at just the right time. A stunning sunset bathed the beach at Vazon in a surreal golden glow as two lone surfers shared a special moment. Having taken the photo I realised that it was a father and his young daughter enjoying some quality time together sharing a pastime that was clearly a pleasure for both of them. I love how a photo can make every special moment last. If you would like to buy one of Tim’s landscapes do get in touch with him to see his collection.

MUSIC BURSARY AWARDED TO GUERNSEY CLARINETTIST WITH CONTINENTAL AMBITIONS Music bursary awarded to Guernsey clarinettist with continental ambitions The 2016 winner of the annual Keith Dawber Memorial Bursary has been named as 19-year old clarinettist and aspiring performance musician Peter Bourne. Following an application and interview process, former Elizabeth College student Peter was successful in being selected for the award, which will help him continue his studies potentially at some of the leading musical institutions in Europe. Now in its sixth year, the Bursary aims to give support to young musicians in Guernsey wishing to study instrumental or vocal classical music at university or college. Sponsored by Deutsche Bank, the Bursary is worth £1,500 annually and is intended to assist students with the cost of study materials, books and tuition fees.

stage time in his musical career already, having been a member of the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra, Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society, Guernsey Jazz Orchestra, and the Guernsey Camerata. In 2014, he auditioned for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and made it through to the final 30 candidates. Since his move to Bordeaux, France, last year, Peter has performed on numerous occasions, including with the Conservatoire’s senior wind band, and has played concerts with a number of Chamber music groups. Currently a student at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacques Thibaud, he plans to draw on the bursary to help fund masterclasses and music courses beyond his curriculum in Bordeaux. He said: “Being granted this bursary gives me options that would otherwise be unavailable. Undertaking auditions and observing masterclasses, possibly elsewhere in Europe, are rare opportunities that will open up much richer influences, bring me closer to becoming a performing musician and allow me in due course to share my experiences with others wishing to pursue musical careers.”

RBC STAFF JUMP AT CHANCE TO PRESERVE RARE MOLE CRICKET HABITAT RBC Wealth Management staff have helped La Société Guernesiaise preserve the natural habitat of the extremely rare mole cricket by clearing away dead vegetation from one of its few remaining habitats on Guernsey. The field, in the north of the island, was gifted to La Société Guernesiaise in the 1990s and was cleared of a derelict glasshouse and rubble. Nearly a hundred apple trees were planted, with a hay meadow developed to the rear. The field is an important natural home for the rare mole cricket, with approximately only four having been sighted in the UK since 1970. Anthony Stagg of La Société Guernesiaise said: ‘The hay meadow needs to be cut back three times a year to provide the right ecosystem for the native plants and wildlife to thrive. As a charity, we rely totally on volunteers to help us with the physical work so we’re therefore extremely grateful to RBC staff for their help.’ Francis Binney, Environmental Officer at RBC Wealth Management said: ‘We’re always looking for worthwhile environmental projects for our staff to become involved with. Change and decline in insect species are often strong indicators of habitat and climate change and in the case of the mole cricket, it is essential that there are enough natural habitats left for it to survive.’

“SAVE OUR POOL” SHOW & SALE SPECTACULAR The allbeauty salon staff are supporting the Castel PTA’s “Save our Pool” appeal. An evening-wear extravaganza is being hosted by Castel Primary School’s PTA on Thursday 13th October in the school’s hall to raise funds for their Save our Pool Appeal . The event features a fashion show supported by allbeauty Smith Street. Models will be showcasing donated ball gowns, cocktail dresses, shoes and accessories and will all have their hair and make-up styled by Christopher Monk’s (pictured third from right) allbeauty team including Creative Director, Mike Najmi (centre) and Georgia Le Page (second from right), a Castel School Mum. Immediately after the fashion show, all the outfits along with many others will be for sale. Headteacher Linda Paley said “We are extremely grateful to the PTA committee, parents, carers and the wider community, including local businesses like allbeauty, for their support to help us raise funds to keep our school pool open. Learning to swim and being confident in the water is an important skill for our children to learn and we are working hard to ensure we can continue to provide this within the school.” Allbeauty has agreed to participate in what they see as a joint initiative to help ensure Castel School’s pool remains fit for purpose, having suffered from lack of States’ funding in recent years. The Save our Pool Appeal is aiming to raise over £50,000 to fund repairs and refurbishment and has the full support of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture.

CARRIER BAG SALES PROVIDE MORE THAN £22,000 TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS THE sale of carrier bags at The Channel Islands Co-operative Society stores is providing more than £22,000 in funding for 12 environmental projects in the islands this year. In 2008, the Society led the way in recycling by levying a 5p charge on onetrip carrier bags, which went into The Co-operative Eco-Fund, and raises just over £30,000 a year. The Society invites applications every summer from projects that have an environmental focus and provides financial support to as many as possible under the fund’s mandate. The remaining money is then used to support other environmental projects over the year or is held until the following year. ‘In the first year, we saw a 95% reduction in carrier bag numbers but we accepted that there will always be a small demand

The evening-wear spectacular is the first in a series of PTA events planned for the first term of the school year with the inaugural Autumn Ball taking place on Saturday 12th November at La Grande Mare Hotel. Donations of nearly new evening-wear and accessories are welcome and tickets for the event cost £5 which includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival. If you would like to make a donation or purchase a ticket please e-mail castelPTA@gmail. com or call Becky on 252616. For more information please call Becky Hilley on 252616 or 07781 112616

and so we wanted to offset that by using the profit from the sale of those bags to help environmental projects. Each year, we are genuinely amazed at the dedication shown by islanders to improve, enhance and enjoy our surroundings and once again The Co-operative Eco-Fund will benefit hundreds of people of all ages across the Channel Islands,’ said Katey White, the Society’s Membership and Community Manager. ‘I have no doubt that the five projects in Jersey and seven in Guernsey will make a real difference to the environment that we are so lucky to have around us.’ In Guernsey, the Society has donated £2,990 to create a bug trail around the Chateaux de Marias (Ivy Castle), the Bouet, which has some interesting plant and insect species. The money will be used to print and install signs for the trail, which will link to an interactive app, and is being created in conjunction with Guernsey Arts Commission, Guernsey Housing Association and young people living on the estate, Guernsey Museums, the Youth Commission, La Société Guernesiaise and artist in residence, Hugh Rose.

factors have affected their lives, and if we solved these issues, perhaps their mental illness and suffering could have been prevented years ago. ‘Researching this talk has opened my eyes to the possibilities of reimagining our mental health ecology as a societal challenge. Ultimately, I hope this conference will inspire islanders to work together to solve mental health in our community.’

How can Guernsey become the happiest country on Earth? That was the bold question asked on October 10th, also World Mental Health Day, at the Thrive 2020 conference. Produced by The Dandelion Project, Thrive 2020 saw over 200 people listen to 20 Ted-style talks by speakers from Guernsey, UK, Europe and as far afield as America. The event, like others organised by The Dandelion Project, was designed to bring people together, with the specific aim to solve the challenges that we face in Guernsey. The packed schedule covered a wide variety of subjects ranging from current drug reinforcement policy, spiritual awaking, men’s mental health and everyday wellbeing. Co-founder of The Dandelion Project, Marc Winn says: 'We run these events to catalyse positive change within the community. This is our fifth major event and we have a good track record of making this outcome happen. Thrive 2020 2016 was our best event yet.' Attendees included people from health, wellbeing and education sectors, as well as the business community. Brooks Macdonald, a local investment manager, sent four team leaders to the event. Jonathan Mynes, Investment Director, comments: ‘Again the Dandelion Project delivered an excellent event that has both informed and inspired our senior staff. Workplace wellbeing and mental health are priorities for us and we hope that this will help to create a deeper understanding for the delegates and that they will be able to better identify and deal with any related issues amongst their respective teams. LOCAL TALENT REACHING OUT TO THE WORLD OF FINANCE Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the island’s finance industry internationally – has launched its new brand ‘WE ARE GUERNSEY’ so GSY Life took the chance to catch up with creative lead Dominque Ogier. Guernsey International Finance Centre – you may or may not know is how Guernsey used to market its financial services to the rest of the world. I guess, unless you’re based in Hong Kong, the US, Europe or other places where Guernsey Finance promotes the island, you might not have known that? Nevertheless, that is no longer the case, explains Dominque Ogier, the creative guru behind the new WE ARE GUERNSEY branding. “It goes without saying that Guernsey is a recognised international finance centre, particularly in the places overseas where we’re promoting. The new brand goes beyond simply stating that fact, and aims to better reflect the wider Guernsey offering, while at the same time differentiating ourselves from our competitors”.

management. “Each industry has consistent branding and colouring throughout the website and marketing materials to bring continuity across our messaging. The ‘chain concept’ highlights the ease with which people can do business with, and in, Guernsey because of a joined-up approach between industry, regulator and government, and the island’s extensive links and relationships with the international business community.” With a background in freelance design and a number of years in the local creative industry, Dominque wanted to differentiate Guernsey’s unique fiscal offerings in a distinct way locally and internationally. “Guernsey has a rich tapestry of history, so through the use of storytelling with the new brand, we are

The WE ARE GUERNSEY brand was developed following a thorough consultation process with industry and internal staff. The logo icon, as seen on this page, incorporates five joined-up chain links fashioned out of the ‘G’ for Guernsey – one for each pillar of Guernsey’s finance industry, namely banking, insurance, investment funds, trust and company (including pensions) and investment

able to underline the fact that Guernsey is an island with hundreds of years of history and community – a place of real substance.” Guernsey Finance has recently partnered up with Locate Guernsey to produce a video for the WE ARE GUERNSEY brand which demonstrates what doing business in Guernsey is like. ‘A Day In The Life’ will show those who visit the island for business or pleasure what the island has to offer them. “The video could also be used as a tool to attract local talent back to the island and to help contribute towards our economy.” There’s now a clear brand and a strong message to send out to the world; we’re secure, we’re connected and we’re open for business. UPFRONT. LOCAL HERO

OUR LOCAL HERO OF THE MONTH! As I sat down for coffee and a chat with Ellie Jones, Vice Chairman of Liberate, I was pretty sure what to expect. Despite having known Ellie for some time I discovered after growing up in the UK, Ellie moved to Guernsey for work when she was eighteen. After some time spent flitting between Guernsey and London, she finds herself still here five years on and with all she’s been getting up to, it doesn’t look as though she’ll be leaving any time soon! An interesting point she mentioned as we discussed her adult life in Guernsey was that a big part of her life was missing, as there was no active gay community on the island, especially after living on London for many years. It seems this mutual feeling shared with several others is what sparked the idea for Liberate; a local LGBTQ+ organisation to inform, include and support its members. Looking back now, two and a half years down the line, Ellie says if you told her what she’d be doing now, she would have laughed. ‘I didn’t realise I was that passionate, and I wasn’t political,’ she explains, having never experienced any negativity towards her sexuality on the island. But as her fellow soon-to-be Liberate members described their more unpleasant encounters over a Facebook group chat, they realised what was missing and what needed to change. Effectively, the mission for what she refers to the as the ‘Guernsey Alphabet’ community is to ''usual-ise'' LBGTQ+ people within the wider community.

‘Everything’s taken me out of my comfort zone,’ Ellie commented as she recalled having to make a speech in front of two and a half thousand people at Pride. She was used to smaller ‘boardroom speeches’, but not in a public setting. At first, she was scared that the weather might put people off, but it didn’t even put a dampener on the celebration and she was excited that the crowd so desperately wanted to be there in spite of the rain. When asked what the long term goal was for Liberate, she took a moment to think before conceding there was really no ultimate main goal; ‘Hopefully, that it won’t need to exist!’ she jokes. There is still much that needs to be addressed on the island, evidenced by an incident only last week involving a homophobic remark made by a driver to a same sex couple, which she describes as being handled exceedingly well by Guernsey police. As if she wasn’t already a saint, Ellie is currently undertaking some work with the Guernsey Disability Alliance, specifically the ‘Hidden Disabilities’ project under the ‘We All Matter, Eh’ banner - which hopes to make people stop and think before they judge people without knowing what they may be going

‘What has been the most satisfying point in your career?’ I pondered, to which she responded with a laugh, ‘September. Can I say September?’ alluding to the entirety of the month that featured Guernsey’s first ever Pride week and the moment she knew they’d pulled it off. As well as gaining the rights for gay marriage in Guernsey, naturally. To many it may seem as though some of Liberate’s events are just one big party- which, of course Pride was- but all publicity and therefore greater visibility of LGBTQ people brings enlightenment to the campaign, therefore allowing more open-mindedness and acceptance.

through. The sorts of disabilities which passers-by might not notice, which makes them all the harder to deal with as they hinder people’s everyday lives but are not initially obvious. For example people may dismiss someone with a brain injury as ‘being drunk’. She lists her involvement in project management, media launches and producing fact sheets to raise awareness. ‘Everyone just wants to be treated the same,’ she muses, touching on the huge difference it makes when others acknowledge someone’s disability and take that in to account without excluding them. To savour the last few moments of conversation, I posed a couple of simple questions such as what one piece of advice she would give to anyone in the LGBT community. She replied with the ever-astute words of ‘Be you. If somebody doesn’t like who you are, that’s their problem,”. And finally, ‘If you were Queen for a day, what would you do?’ With no hesitation whatsoever, she answered, ‘I’m already a Queen, darling!’ That is why, ladies and gentlemen, I feel that no more need to be said regarding why Ellie Jones should be named Hero of the Month. THE CONSTRUCTION AWARDS Where: Beau Sejour Photographer: Chris George Shining a spotlight on Guernsey’s property and construction industry, the inaugural Guernsey Construction Awards was held on Friday 14 October at Beau Sejour. With more than 250 building and property professionals and their guests in attendance, the awards winners were announced at a gala dinner at Beau Sejour. All spectrums of the industry were in attendance, including representatives from the Chartered Industry of Building, GOSHA, the CIGPE and the Construction Industry Forum. A section of the evening was also devoted to Guernsey’s up and coming apprentices, and College of Further Education principle, Louise Misselke, spoke passionately about the need for quality skills training on island. The evening was enhanced by the announcement of a brand new local charity, The Guernsey Construction Benevolent Fund. Tim Guilbert, former president of the CIOB, told an enthused audience that the need to ‘look after our own’ in times of hardship was a real must. A collection at the awards evening raised just under £1,500. Kindly sponsored by Ogier Property and Channel Island Lines, the Guernsey Construction Awards aim to highlight and celebrate the contribution individuals make to Guernsey’s construction industry. UPFRONT. AGONY AUNT

AGONY AUNT Do you have an issue you want to get off your chest? Why not get in touch with our very own Agony Aunt, The BBC’s Jenny Kendall-Tobias.

Q: Our log burner is well fired but it’s going through my store of wood very quickly. Do you have any tips on maintaining a healthy wood supply? If you’re finding it hard to get wood to keep up with demand then may I be so bold as to suggest you have a blunt chopper. I need to teach you a thing or two about your technique but it also depends on how well-seasoned your timber is and how dry things are. The easy way out would be for you to order in, but surely you’d prefer to harness your inner lumberjack and make use of those big, manly hands of yours. Someone once said: “I like that satisfying ‘thunk’ and the feeling of power, seeing that big obstinate piece of wood doing what I want”. Do remember, it’s not about chopping and it’s all about splitting and if you come across a knot in your wood then don’t even bother. It’s all about the stance too: when wielding your chopper stand with your legs apart, pull back and use straight arms. Build up speed and let the momentum and the weight of your chopper do the work. Oh, and do try to aim for the same place every time but if you can’t manage this, wood with a slightly ragged edge is not a problem. Your chopper may get stuck for a while but just wiggle it out gently. I hope this helps.

Q: With November being the month of fireworks, how can I guarantee the best trajectory for my rocket? The study of rockets is something I’ve tried to master over the years and I’ve had my hands on a few, I can tell you. In my experience, it’s all about thrust. Aerodynamics are important too but the shape of your rocket shouldn’t worry you. Aim for a gimbaled thrust. As your nozzle is moved, the direction of your thrust will be changed relative to the centre of gravity of your rocket. Here’s a formula that may help:V = sqrt ( g0 * Frossard House^2 / (Frossard House + h) )

Q. My marriage has reached breaking point and I need your help JKT. It would appear that my wife is an avid fan of Strictly Come Dancing but I don’t enjoy it much as she no longer pays me any attention on a Saturday night and it’s causing ructions. How can I get myself into the ‘Strictly mood’ for the sake of my marriage? Frankly, I’m surprised. How could you not be a fan of the show? What you need is a pair of glittery balls. Hang them up five minutes before the start of the show and then imagine her surprise when she glances over to see your balls suspended from the lounge ceiling giving lustre to the living room. Add to that the ‘je ne sais quoi’ of your dressing in an all-in-one spandex body suit and the night is yours. You could also grow a beard and try out the latest trend of dousing your facial hair with sparkles. If all else fails, take a chance when the credits roll and pretend you’re Aljaž by adopting a Slovenian accent. You may find yourself quickstepping upstairs together faster than you can say paso doble! You might even get a glimpse of her rocky mountains or she could pickle your walnuts but at least you’ll know where you stand.

Smoked and Poached Salmon Rilette, Pickled Cucumber and Crème Fraiche Ingredients 100g water 110g olive oil 2g thyme 5g garlic 60g white wine 4g salt 100g salmon 100g diced smoked salmon 20g finely diced shallots 10g good quality olive oil 2g chopped parsley ½ lemon zested ½ cucumber 50g crème fraiche 4 baby onions 50g white wine vinegar 50g sugar watercress Method Place the water, olive oil, thyme, garlic, white wine and salt in to a pan and add the salmon skin side up. Place on the stove and gently bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and cool for 25minutes. Remove the salmon and gently flake away from the skin taking care to remove any brown. Place the salmon in a bowl and add the remainder of the ingredients. Season with salt and set aside for use later. Place the sugar and white wine vinegar into a saucepan and bring to the boil to make our pickling liquor. Cool. Peel the cucumber and slice thin avoiding any seeds. Season and dress with the pickling liquor. Set aside for use later. Peel the baby onions and place them in a pan of cold water. Bring to the boil and simmer until tender. Remove from the pan and slice in ½ , place them in the pickling liquor. Set aside for use later. Season the crème fraiche with salt. Place the cucumbers neatly on a suitable plate. Place to piles of salmon mix in opposite corners. Place a spoon of crème fraiche on the cucumber either side of the salmon. Place a few pickled onion shells around the base of the salmon. Garnish with watercress and serve.

Sacred gin on its own has a slight creaminess to it but once served with slice of lemon and tonic highlights the lemon element of this dish and compliments the salmon. This pairing makes for a refreshing start to a meal.

3 chicken breasts 6 king prawns ginger paste garlic paste Turmeric Curry powder Salt Greek yogurt 1 medium onion peeled and blended to a paste 1 cinnamon stick 2 star anise

• • • • • • • • • • •

3 cardamom pods 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 orange zested 2 vine tomatoes blended to a paste 2 tbls honey 330ml coconut milk ¼ cup double cream 15g chopped coriander 1 green chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped Unsalted butter Vegetable oil

Japhia’s Bio Hailing from Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Japhia Ellaya did her practical training at The Oyster Box Hotel in Durban and joined the hotel straight after graduation as a Commis Chef. Japhia will join the culinary team as the Chef in Charge of the Indian section, in the 16-seater, Governors Restaurant at the Old Government House Hotel in Guernsey, sister Red Carnation Hotel to The Oyster Box. Since April this year, when Japhia was presented with the opportunity to fullfill both her travel and cooking dreams, she has been under the watchful eye of Chef Kevin Joseph of the Oyster Box, as she prepared for one of the biggest challenges of her professional life; learning and practicing all The Oyster Box’s Indian recipes and how to run her own specialised section.

Method Cube the chicken breast and marinade with 1tbls ginger paste, 1 tbls garlic paste, ½ tsp turmeric, 2 tbls curry powder, ½ cup Greek yogurt and a pinch of salt. Cover overnight. Peel and devein the prawns and marinade with 1tsp ginger paste, 1 tsp garlic paste, ¼ tsp turmeric, 2 tsp curry powder and a pinch of salt. Cover and place in the fridge overnight. Heat a large saucepan and add 1 tbls butter and 3 tbls vegetable oil. When hot add the cinnamon stick, star anise, fennel seeds and cardamom pods until you smell the spices. Add the orange zest, onion, 1 tbls garlic paste, 1 tbls ginger paste and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add 1tsp turmeric and 1 tbls curry powder. Add the tomato and cook for 5-8 minutes. Add the honey, coconut milk and cream and bring to the boil. Add the chopped coriander and chilli. Remove the prawns and chicken from the marinade and place on a baking tray. Place in a preheated oven set at 190 for 6-8 minutes or until cooked through. Mix the chicken and prawns with the sauce, check the seasoning and serve with braised rice and Naan breads.

Opihr gin is great to match with this dish as it can hold its own against the curry. Using ginger and orange peel pick out a couple of the ingredients in this dish makes a great combination. The addition of tonic also brings out a few of the botanicals used in the gin that are also used in the curry.

Praline Parfait, Coffee, Raspberry & White Chocolate Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

50g sugar 40g water 2 yolks 1 leaves gelatine soaked in cold water 100g double cream – semi whip 40g praline paste 1 punnets raspberries 10g icing sugar 100g double cream

• • • • • • • • • • • •

30g milk 25g yolk 10g sugar ¼ vanilla pod 150g white chocolate melted 10g camp coffee 100g dark chocolate 60g vegetable oil 100g water 5g glucose 25g castor 50g white chocolate

Method Place the sugar and water into a pan and using a thermometer bring up to 118 oC. In the meantime place the 2 yolks into the bowl from an electric mixer and turn on slow speed. Once the water and sugar reach temperature turn the speed to full and pour the sugar syrup onto the yolks. Add the gelatine and continue to whisk until warm. Remove the bowl and whisk in the praline by hand. Add 1/3 of the semi whipped cream and whisk. Carefully fold in the remaining semi whipped cream and pour into a tray lined with cling film. Cover and freeze. Remove the parfait from the freezer and out of its tray and onto a clean chopping board. Using a knife dipped in hot water cut the parfait into rectangles 4cm x 6cm. Place back in the freezer. If you are experienced at this stage you could spray with chocolate as in the picture. Place the 25g yolk and 10g castor sugar into a bowl and whisk. Place the 100g double cream and milk into a sauce pan and bring to the boil. Pour over the yolks and then place back into the saucepan and continually stir over a gentle heat until it coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat and cool in a clean container. Take the custard mix above and add the melted white chocolate and the camp coffee and place in a piping bag. Place the raspberries into a bowl and add the icing sugar, using a fork crush the berries then pour the mixture into a sieve and store over a bowl to collect the juice for use later. Place the water, glucose and sugar into a pan and bring to the boil. Add the white chocolate and whisk. Cool and place in an ice cream machine to churn. Freeze for use later.

Brockmans is a beautiful gin as it is made using blueberries and blackberries making it a really fruity gin to begin with. Putting raspberries to garnish picks up on the berry flavours of the gin and ties in perfectly with raspberries on the plate.

TOT-POTS

HOMEMADE NUTRITIOUS TODDLER MEALS! Tot-Pots Guernsey recently revealed their brand new range of homemade toddler meals via their Facebook page. Aimed at busy parents of 10month to 3year-old children, the range includes eight core ‘freshly frozen’ meals neatly packaged into variety packs including ‘Little Favourites’, ‘Little Explorers’ and ‘Little Dairy Frees’. The business launched In August after a six-month period of extensive research and product testing. Kat Gillespie, owner of Tot-Pots developed the idea after batch cooking and freezing homemade meals for her own children, 2 year old twins Jessica and Oliver. “I really enjoy cooking and experimenting with recipes” says Kat, “I try to cram as many vegetables as

possible into a recipe by chopping them finely and hiding them in the sauce. Many people don’t have the time or the inclination to do this themselves and rely heavily on prepacked supermarket meals which are fine, but they often contain additives and preservatives to extend their shelf life”. After conducting an online survey earlier in the year which attracted overwhelming positivity for a locally homemade range of nutritious products, Kat felt the feedback couldn’t be ignored. Kat is trialing the business for a six-month period on a side-line basis. The toddler menu and price list is available from the Tot-Pots Guernsey Facebook page.

Samata became a mother in 2012 and has since spent many a fruitless moment searching for the holy grail of 'balance'. Balance between work and play, play doh and clean up, adult and child time, sleep and awake but mostly between doing her best followed by doing the minimal possible. Throwing a second child into the mix certainly made things more exciting and this was when she gave up the search entirely and attempted to settle into the perpetual chaos. It's a work in progress. She takes her hat off to all parents everywhere.

FINDING BALANCE IN MOTHERHOOD Words by Samata Russell

W

e are all familiar with the image of a mother with multiple arms – one limb for a mop, a computer, a cell phone and one to hold the baby. The demands of introducing a tiny human being into the world are vast and sometimes mothers can feel overwhelmed with the amount that needs to be done, wishing they had more time, or perhaps a clone to help them out. I caught up with founder of Mothership, Brooke Kenyon, and founder of the Women's Development Forum, Michelle Johansen, to discuss how to balance the demands of motherhood. ‘Firstly,’ says Michelle ‘I’m not even sure that the illusive work/life balance that we talk about is even possible, especially in early motherhood. There is so much pressure these days to do it all and do it all perfectly, partly from social media where everyone seems to have the perfect job with their perfect children, eating their perfect kale chips for breakfast.' And it's not just social media. Science has taken a great interest over the past few decades into well being and mental health and the impact early life has on child development and adult success. Educated mothers want the best for their offspring and put an enormous amount of pressure on themselves to provide healthy attachments, stimulating activities, outdoor play, fair discipline, nutritious food, the list goes on. This comes at a time when many are also feeling the pressure to be at the top of their game in their careers.

one ought to work as if one didn't have children; while raising one’s children as if one did not have a job.’ It is difficult to be a parent and cuddle and play and feed and clean and perform at work and keep a house and eat well and find time for your partner and exercise and shower and sleep and possibly, just possibly…. Relax? It feels less about balance and more about juggling and sometimes the balls drop. ‘Why do we search for balance? It’s for better mental health and greater well being. I think mothers then would feel a lot better if we allowed ourselves to let go of the idea of perfect balance or perfect anything,' says Michelle. 'Good enough' then becomes a balancing and more achievable goal. And good enough together is even better. 'I am sure a ‘sisterhood’ has existed between mums of every generation – whether that be over the washing line or at church halls but I do feel a surge in mums supporting mums. Stay at home mums, full time working mums and all that is in between – we all struggle with parenting challenges. Social media

‘It is damaging to women who feel like they need to live up to a standard that is simply unattainable, which can leave them exhausted, burned out and feeling just not good enough,' adds Michelle. Brooke agrees that the expectations on mothers are extremely high. In the first session of her series of Mothership meet ups, she quoted Annabel Crab who said ‘the obligation for working mothers is a very precise one – the feeling that

#09. NOVEMBER 2016. THE BALANCE ISSUE

used to just make us feel worse. We saw people online just doing it better, with less cereal under the breakfast table, perfectly mannered children eating all their dinner, fresh faced mums off to the gym after a night’s sleep…..we all know that isn’t real. Life for mothers is busy, too busy sometimes, but to cope (note not ‘do a good job’) you need support. That's why I started Mothership – some of the messages I have had about new friendships forming since we launched in May makes it very worthwhile,' says Brooke. I think author Glennon Doyle Melton summed it up perfectly when she said: ‘You will never find your perfect life “balance”for the same reason you will never find a unicorn – because these things don’t exist. Forget unicorns and balance. If you were perfectly balancedyou’d never have to take anyone's hand to steady yourself, and that would be a tragedy. There is no solid ground – so don’t hold your breath till you find it. Breathe deeply and keep moving forward awkwardly. You can make it down the whole path imbalanced and flailing’. It’s

never too early to learn a second language! - give your children a flying start with BilinguaSing!

Amazingly, babies are born with the ability to learn any language in the world! In theory, a baby with English parents should have no more difficulty learning Russian than a baby with Russian heritage! When Windsor-based languages teacher, Ellie Baker, had her first baby in October 2012, she tried to find a baby-friendly languages class but there was nothing suitable in the area. She went on to set up her own award-winning music and language classes, ‘BilinguaSing,’ so that other local mums and dads could benefit from learning Spanish or French while introducing it to their little ones. When Anna Lisa Detassis, Director of Accent Language School, found out about these classes, she immediately recognised the great potential of this new and exciting method of learning and arranged to become the exclusive franchisor for Guernsey and Northern France, where Accent France is located. ‘At Accent, like at BilinguaSing, we are passionate about introducing babies and young children to a second, or even third language from birth, or as soon as possible after that. Ellie and I clicked immediately from our first conversation and soon after we started working together. During our classes, we harness the power of music and engaging props to make language learning super active and lots of fun. We sing well known nursery rhymes and popular children’s songs in both English and also in French or Spanish. Elements of baby sensory, yoga and reflexology are built in to benefit both baby and parent.’ Accent Language School runs BilinguaSing classes in 3 Guernsey locations: Vale Church, Styx Centre and their offices in the Commercial Arcade. Rachael Green, BilinguaSing Co-ordinator comments: “we are so excited about these new classes, we have had so much interest even before launching them that we felt it was important to offer different locations around the island making it as easy as possible for parents and children to attend’. For more information on BilinguaSing classes for babies, toddlers & pre-school children or to book a free demonstration class for your nursery or preschool email bilinguasing@accent.gg or visit www. accent.gg

HELEN GREEN

ACCOUNTANT AND DIRECTOR OF SAFFERY CHAMPNESS

J

uggling a demanding career with parenting is no mean feat.

But successful company director Helen Green says if you have the right support and a will to succeed, anything is possible. The 53-year-old accountant and director of Saffery Champness is married with two daughters – Jemma, aged 20, and Abbie, 18. Having joined the company in London as a trainee accountant in 1984, Helen was made a partner in 1997, just before Abbie was born. ‘Continuing with a career is not for every parent, but if you want to do it and so long as you have a supportive network around you, anything is achievable. As with everything in life you get out of it what you put in.’ She has been a leading figure in the Guernsey finance industry since moving to the island in 2000. Having played a significant role in the development of the Saffery Champness business locally, she is highly regarded in the private client field, calling upon her accountancy skills and insolvency expertise. Helen said female representation in senior positions in the Guernsey finance industry is good, but she also recognises it remains poor across other industries. However she doesn’t believe in a glass ceiling and said in most instances it was simply down to personal preference. ‘The perceptions of men and women in finance have changed significantly since the beginning of my career. Back then there was the notion that women should only be in meetings to take notes and make the drinks, but now there is much more equality and men and women are judged on their strengths.’ She added that Saffery Champness has always been an exemplar for recognising women, and in particular for supporting working mums. Born in Bath in 1963, Helen went on to spend her early years in Bristol before

moving to Fordingbridge in Hampshire at the age of 11. She went to Ringwood Comprehensive before studying for her A Levels at Brockenhurst Sixth Form College. Young Helen always felt she would follow the career path of one of her parents - her mother was a nurse and her father was an accountant. Leaning towards a career as a doctor, that dream was shattered when she failed to get the required grade in A Level chemistry. Moving to London aged 18, she took on a role as a book keeper to see if accountancy was for her.

maternity leave was the toughest job I’ve ever done.’

‘I spent a couple of years working for a manhole cover supplier in Watford. I worked for a very old school accountant who did traditional book keeping and I loved it.’

‘It’s very hard to have a work/life balance when working in London – Guernsey is a world apart. Suddenly my commute was slashed from hours to minutes and I enjoyed much more home life.’

At 21 she commenced a training contract at Saffery Champness and has been there ever since, spending 16 years in London and 16 years so far in Guernsey.

Helen is responsible for client liaison within the Guernsey office and leads a team specialising in the establishment, management and operation of offshore structures. She sits on the board of the fund administration company as well as various other boards, including principal management companies, both internal and third party. She is also a nonexecutive director for several Londonlisted funds.

‘I thought of moving companies when I first qualified, but nothing really grabbed me and there was no reason to leave. ‘I’ve been able to change roles every few years, which has kept things varied and interesting. I really enjoy it and like the challenge that every day brings. The people are lovely and I like the work ethic.’ Her children were born when she was progressing well in her career and she limited her maternity leave to 12 weeks each time. She was on a career path to partner just before Jemma was born, but put this on hold, not knowing if she wanted to commit to rushing straight back to full time work. Quickly realising she wanted to remain focussed on her career she went on to be promoted to partner when she was seven months pregnant with Abbie. ‘Both girls were at nursery from 8am to 6pm from three months old. It was a great nursery and they took to it really well and thrived. ‘Not everyone would want to go back to work as quickly as I did, but this is what suited us. I found my 12-week stints on

At the time her husband Andy was working long and irregular hours as a policeman, so Helen did the nursery runs either side of her hour commute to and from work. At the turn of the millennium, when Jemma was four and Abbie was two, Helen was offered a transfer to Guernsey and the family jumped at the chance to relocate.

Renowned by her peers, she is listed as a Citywealth Top 200 Power Woman alongside a number of other accolades including recently being named in ePrivateClient’s 2016 list of the 50 Most Influential private wealth professional advisers. Outside work Helen is committed to a number of charities and has had a longstanding involvement with the Lady Taverners. She and Andy are also keen travellers, and have just come back from a holiday in India. They keep a motorboat locally and enjoy cruising Bailiwick waters and the nearby coast of France. While they haven’t used the boat as much as they would have liked this year, they did manage two weeks in Brittany. Jemma and Abbie are both now at university, but the nest is not completely empty as Helen and Andy have their dogs and cat for company.

Our Land Is Girt By Sea By Paula Kontelj Image by James Tyson

Once upon a time a world-weary woman from Australia landed in a fairyland called Guernsey… Just like a fairytale, I found myself in a picture-book house, in a picturebook street in St Peter Port with island views above green hedge fences and thatched roofs, and rabbits hopping in the neighbour’s lush gardens. However I’m not the first Geelong woman to move here, I proudly follow in the footsteps of Helen Creasey. Aside from knowing of Creasey’s and Specsavers when I first arrived, I knew only that Guernsey was one of the Channel Islands and that it was home to some beautiful cows producing amazing butter. So I needed to do my research, and read ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society’ and ‘The book of Ebenezer Le Page’, the latter teaching me to put ‘me’ at the end of my sentences, but more importantly these books taught me about the island’s rich history, the German occupation and liberation and the pride of the islanders themselves. Of course the beauty of the island is what first grabs the visitor, and hence the flow of tourist ships to the habour. The views as you enter St Peter Port are second to none with Castle Cornet proudly standing guard as the city rises into the hills. Tourists and locals alike enjoy the stunning scenery and island views along kilometres of cliff paths. Enormous seagulls circle the island, singing their Guernsey song. Centuries old buildings whisper their stories along narrow winding cobblestone roads. Coming from the land of the 4 lane freeway, these narrow winding roads have taken some getting used to and we have already lost one side mirror, having taken too long to learn the trick of mounting the footpath when facing an on-coming challenge! The curtesy extended to fellow motorists,

cyclists, pedestrians and even horses on Guernsey roads, puts Guernsey in a league of its’ own. A patient parade of vehicles amble happily behind a family out for a leisurely Sunday bike ride, no road rage here. The unique traffic ‘filter’ tests my instinct to simply ‘give way to the right’ and seems to work extraordinarily well, but somehow I can’t see the frazzled Melbourne motorist politely agreeing to let another car go first if they arrived at the intersection simultaneously, but in Melbourne as in other big cities of the world, manners and patience seem to have gone the way of the Dodo bird. I admire the beautiful flowers in St Peter Port and other parishes which add colour and vibrancy to the environment, and I’m told are lovingly tended to by volunteers. In my hometown, our Mayor formerly well known in Britain as Mr Papparazzi, Darryn Lyons, tried to bring flowers to our central business district, but most were trampled or pulled out in the first weeks by disrespectful youths who found it amusing to wreak havoc in the community. I marvel at Guernsey’s absence of these acts of vandalism and also the lack of graffiti! It seems the youth of this island respect its’ beauty and know that the best way to leave their mark is to leave it alone. I sense they have such pride in the island’s heritage that it is in good hands. Some islanders complain that the Summers here are not warm enough, but having endured decades of heat waves, drought and bush fires down under, the milder weather and endless greenery constitutes my perfect Summer! I always tried to dodge the Australian sun as best I could over the years, so it was ironic and a little embarrassing that I managed to get sunburnt when I visited beautiful Herm recently. I didn’t take seriously enough the warning I’d received from

#09. NOVEMBER 2016. THE BALANCE ISSUE

experienced locals, and wore my sunburn like a badge of stupidity. In a fast paced world crowded with people struggling to get ahead, rushing and pushing and living in fear as crime rates soar, Guernsey seems one of the last bastions of a by-gone era. With hedge-veg stands and a parking system that rely on people’s honesty, here people live by the rules, not break them. A couple of enlightening encounters have clearly illustrated to me the expectations of islanders and the standard by which they maintain their well-ordered society. While trying to navigate around the local streets in my first week here, I took a wrong turn down a one-way street, and as I hastily did a U-turn, I saw a young Mum videoing my mistake. I wound down my window to explain I was new to the island, and she pointed out that the street was marked ‘one way’ I should have known better! Feeling terrible about my error, and wondering if the video would appear on a Guernsey website featuring the island’s worst drivers, my husband said he’d take me out to the movies to put a smile on my face. We turned up at the Mallard cinema complex just in time for the showing and purchased our tickets. We stepped into the cinema, and to our surprise there was no-one else there! This was a rare treat! The movie was just beginning and we sat down a few rows from the back and several seats along ready to enjoy the show in an empty cinema! Just then two people came in and walked right up to us and said “Excuse me, you’re in our seats!” That’s ok. I’m happy to move half way around the world and more than happy to move a few seats along! I’m learning the rules of the Bailiwick and I’m very fortunate to be living ‘happily ever after’ in my own fairytale in picturesque Guernsey…me!

MOOD BOOSTING COLOURS FOR A BALANCED INTERIOR. by Nadia Newton of Penelope Hope I’m sure nearly all of us are seeking balance within our lives in one form or another. Whether it be getting that work-life balance right, finding the balance between being healthy and giving in to naughty treats but perhaps more important than anything else is our desire and need to ‘feel’ balanced. I’m talking mentally and emotionally here.

Bright Colours Bold bright colours aren’t for everyone but punchy happy tones can help lift your spirits on even the darkest of days. However, it does take courage as a bright colour scheme can dominate your space and divert attention from everything else in the room.

What does it mean to feel balanced? To me, it means that you have a handle on the various elements in your life and don’t feel that your heart or mind are pulling you too hard in any direction. You feel calm, grounded, clear-headed and motivated. We all have good days and bad days when our moods and emotions are all over the place but wouldn’t it be great to have that lovely balanced feeling all the time?! I’m not a psychiatrist, Doctor or counsellor but I do know that creating a balanced environment to live in can have a big impact on feeling balanced. As a textile designer, I have a particular interest in how colour can affect our mood and behaviour, which in turn will help to keep us feel ingbalanced.

Pinks, Red and Purples can add passion and drama to a bedroom but also help to promote compassion and increase happiness levels.

Nature Colours Freshness, environment, outdoors, longevity, new, fertility, healing, Earth. Nature colours can be used to balance the colours used in either a dominant warm colour scheme or a dominate cool colour scheme. Shades of green are the dominant colour of nature so they create a calming, feel good atmosphere. Use the colour green to aid relaxation and promote feelings of safety and reassurance. Brown tones help evoke a sense of nature which can encourage you to relax and slow down. This colour helps convey security, warmth and comfort.

Regardless of your personal colour preferences, colour balance is the most important secret in achieving your desired interior environment. It is also the most difficult to describe as it comes down to how your eye perceives the space around you and how it makes ‘you’ feel.

Yellow is the colour to pick if you need help to improve your concentration and want to aid your creativity. This uplifting bold colour is full of optimism and energy. It’s time to re-think oils... Often avoided for fear that they’ll cause breakouts or leave a greasy residue, oils have recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. This is partly owing to the spotlight on natural products and partly because of the increased availability on the mass market, as we become more educated in their benefits. There are oils to treat from head to toe and what’s more, many are multi-purpose meaning that they are both space and money saving.

Hair oils have been one of the biggest beauty trends in recent years. Rather than leaving hair greasy, they improve condition, add shine and even speed up blow drying time - what’s not to love?!

Cult brand, Moroccanoil offers their signature Treatment Oil (from £12.80) product which is popular with celebrities including Marion Cotillard, Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron. But you don’t need to splash the cash as many wallet friendly brands also offer hair oils now.

We’ve been particularly impressed with L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil (from £5.99) which can be doubled up as a preshampoo treatment mask to deeply condition hair. For those who prefer natural beauty products, it’s hard to beat organic extra virgin coconut oil. Again, this is a fantastic multi-tasker which can be used as a hair mask, to remove makeup, moisturise skin- the list is practically endless! Cleansing oils have been popular in Asia for years and contrary to popular belief, won’t leave skin feeling greasy. In fact, oils have a balancing effect on skin (they “trick” skin into “thinking” that there’s sufficient oil and no need to overproduce) and are a particularly good choice for those with combination or oily skin types as they remove excess oils without stripping the skin as some harsh cleansers can.

Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil (£23.60) contains Winter Rose Oil and Pomegranate and is an indulgent option for those seeking a homespa experience.

50

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Oil (£18.50) is a fragrance-free formula which has something of a cult following thanks to its ability to effortlessly yet effectively remove makeup.

If you prefer natural brands, check out Elemental Herbology Harmonising Cleanse (£29), whereas those on a budget may wish to try Simple Hydrating Cleansing Oil (£6.99).

Along the same vein, facial oils are a good option and we often favour them in place of heavy night creams. Furthermore, the formula inherently lends itself well to facial massage. We recommend avoiding those containing cheap mineral oil, which can clog pores and instead, look for formulas which are based on plant oils, rich in skin loving fatty acids.

If you’re new to facial oils, Dermalogica’s recently launched Phyto Replenish Oil (£51.67) is a good choice thanks to the lightweight, non-greasy formula which is reminiscent of a dry oil. Yes, it’s pricey but it’s also easily absorbed and is packed with antioxidant rich ingredients including Orchid Flower Extract and Chia Seed Oil. It leaves skin with an enviable, youthful, dewy glow. We love mixing a couple of drops with our moisturiser before daily application to give an impressively luminous base before applying makeup.

The Body Shop Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Facial Oil (£28) is a good all-rounder that’s difficult to go wrong with and is suitable for all skin types.

Another great option which we love for its radiance boosting properties is Balance Me Radiance Face Oil (£30). It’s a richer formula than the Dermalogica version so we’d recommend it for those who are more comfortable with oils, or those with mature skin types.

Body oils are the ideal way to moisturise when you’re in a hurry. Simply apply to damp skin when you step out of the bath or shower to lock in moisture and provide nourishment. They’re an ideal choice as the seasons change.

Alternatively, try Clarins Relax Body Treatment Oil (£33.30) which delivers on the claims. It’s in our “can’t live without” arsenal for helping to ensure a good night’s sleep.

For a winter skin saviour, Burt’s Bees Lemon & Vitamin E Body & Bath Oil (£9.99) offers great value and leaves skin feeling soothed and conditioned.

The classic way to enjoy oils is in a bath soak. It’s well worth forgoing bubbles in favour of a bath oil. As oils are a natural carrier for essential oils, incorporating them into an indulgent bath can have a balancing effect on mind as well as body. The heat of the water will help to disperse and enhance the aromatherapy benefits for optimum results. Look for Rosemary to revive and Clary Sage or Lavender to relax.

If you simply want a nofrills body oil which works effectively to nourish skin, try Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Deep Moisture Body Oil (£8.99).

We love the awardwinning This Works Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil (£39.50)- don’t reserve it solely for your limbs. If you’re looking for the ideal gift to treat someone (or yourself!), look no further than REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil (£30). It’s the ultimate in indulgence and little surprise that celebrities including Sienna Miller, Sharon Osbourne and Kate Beckinsale count it amongst their must-haves.

FRESH NEW YOU Stuck in a beauty rut? Have you been going to the same hairstylist for years? What about your makeup bag? ‘Fess up- does it still contain the same staples that you were using twenty years ago? It’s time for an upgrade. And the team at allbeauty are just the people to help.

Creative Director, Mike Najmi has travelled the globe styling hair and recently relocated to Guernsey. His passion for hair is seconded only by his love of the Island and it’s this enthusiasm which has inspired allbeauty’s latest initiative. Mike firmly believes that Guernsey will be at the cutting (if you’ll pardon the pun) edge of hair styling in the near future. He wants to give something back to the Island which has made him feel so welcome and has joined forces with his colleagues at allbeauty to invite the population of Guernsey to discover a fresh approach. If you know someone that is in need of a makeover, or an indulgent pampering session following a difficult period, why not pop into the salon and nominate them for a transformational experience?

Mike created a simple yet striking hair style to complement the classic Little Mistress lace dress which HS2 kindly loaned. Inspired by catwalk and red carpet styling, Mike swept Ilze’s enviably long tresses into a statement quiff. Cleverly, he created the style simply using strong hold styling products from Kerastase and Redken, This avoided the use of pins and grips, as he was careful to show consideration for Ilze’s casual lifestyle and low-maintenance approach. A glamorous makeover by Makeup Artist, Samantha Ogier completed the look and saw Ilze rocking a statement red lip. After excitedly awaiting the grand reveal, Ilze was shown the results. She exclaimed, “I’m not used to seeing myself life this! My hair and makeup looks very beautiful. All together, the look is stunning!” Her husband concurred, saying, “Wow! I don’t really recognise you! I haven’t seen my wife looking like this before! You’ve been having fun- but I only wish I could kiss you on the lips!”

Jewellery apprentice and newlywed, Ilze Briggs is naturally outdoorsy and admits that she is more accustomed to holding rowing oars than makeup brushes. Her active lifestyle usually dictates her look and she favours simplicity. She wears very little makeup and explained, “If I don’t get everything from just one bottle, it’s too many products!” This was even the case on her wedding day when she went barefoot on the beach in Hawaii, keeping things natural with just a touch of mascara, concealer and lipgloss. As a surprise for her husband and friends, the experts at allbeauty teamed up to create a glamorous new look for Ilze.

NIGHT CIRCUS

Beau Sejour Leisure centre was transformed into a scene resembling a Tim Burton masterpiece, as it played host to 'The Night Circus', a charity ball in aid of Lymphoma research. Around 400 extravagantly dressed guests poured through the doors, and were greeted by performers demonstrating fire poi. The attention to detail throughout the evening was flawless, and the well ornamented hall boasted an abundance of drama and eccentricity. The event was the brain child of Nikki Colley, Nadia Newton, Claire Wakefield, Sarah Langford and Emma Stafford-Bell. The quintet of friends conceived the idea in April, as Nikki's younger sister, Georgina Burrows was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 28. Georgina is an aerial hoop artist, and performs under the moniker, 'Deadbeat Cirqus', so the organisers felt that the circus theme would be very fitting indeed. The inspiration was taken from the book of the same name, which contains some wonderful imagery, and therefore was used as a heavy influenced the atmosphere of the evening.

was inevitability disrupted as she had to undergo extensive and gruelling chemotherapy treatment. However, she was determined to continue with the sport which she is so passionate about; 'I originally discovered the lump at the base of my throat when I was working on a contortion move called a chest stand, which involves an extreme back bend. That led me to seek medical advice, and its fortunate I did because that led to the diagnosis of lymphoma, so in an indirect way, circus basically saved my life. When I was having chemotherapy, I was supposed to have something called a port, which is a tube inserted into your heart to administer the drugs, but I refused because it would have stopped

Georgina became involved in this type of performance art around four years ago, and it originated as a hobby; 'I saw someone perform aerial hoop at Circus restaurant in London, and I really wanted to try it. I have a gymnastics background, so that probably helped. I really enjoy it, and started training about four times a week a couple of years ago.' When illness struck, Georgina's training

me training, so for six months I had incredibly painful cannulas inserted into my arm instead. It was by far and away the worst part of treatment but it was worth it because it meant I got to carry on training and therefore retain a sense of identity beyond 'cancer patient'. Georgina was supported greatly by her friends and family, who bought her a special training rope for her birthday, which she rigged up to a tree. Although she was ill, training continued and her main focus was to retain strength and flexibility throughout this difficult period. Georgina finished her chemotherapy treatment on 21st of July, and she has

been pushing herself to get back to full strength since. These days, Georgina performs as a double act with her hoop partner. Jen. Some of their biggest performances to date include; 'Secret Garden Party', 'Boomtown', 'Rumpus Party' and various other London clubs and events. Her comeback performance at the Night Circus was a huge success, and the spectators were in awe of the duos' incredible talent.

Nadia Newton, one of the organisers, was very pleased with how it all went, and it has exceeded her expectations. She is very grateful to everybody involved, and of course for the generosity of all who attended; 'From the organisers point of view, it went fantastically. There was a lot going on, so plenty of room for error but everyone involved was totally professional and on top of their role. From photographer Tim Langlois to our compere Andrew Hislop, sound engineers, 'Delta', Sueco and the Beau Sejour staff. Feedback from our guests has been phenomenal, the day

Guests were also treated to a special performance by former Olympic gymnast, Justin Beardsmore. The 21 year old performer, who has been involved in gymnastics since he was 11 years old, wowed the crowd with his astonishing hand balancing techniques, and mystifying flexibility. Justin has performed with 'Cirque du Soleil', and has competed in multiple European championships, world cups and world championships. 'I have to say, my performance went really well from my side but its always great reassurance to know the crowd is behind you when doing an act, as the moment you hear the audience start clapping as you demonstrate your skills, you know you've done a good job. I absolutely loved my trip to Guernsey and would love to visit again in the near future'. Other attractions included a bespoke dance show by Avril Earl, a black swan and a mime, a magician, GATE acrobats and live music from the band, 'Last of the Light Brigade'. Strong-men from local gym, MyFitness also graced the crowd with their presence. All in all, there was an eclectic mix of both local and nonlocal acts to keep everybody entertained. The entire evening was compered by an enthusiastic ringmaster in the form of Andy Hislop, whose humour and witty banter assisted in the smooth running of the event. SURFING THROUGH GENERATIONS... In July and August, the West coast of Guernsey is awash with islanders seeking a day of water activity. Those commuting to work drive past in envy, wishing to swap the office for a day of soaking up the sun. Fast forward to Autumn’s ocean temperatures of ten degrees Celsius, and a drive along the West coast does little to inspire the same sense of longing. Despite this, Islanders remain steadfast in their commitment to the sea. An overwhelming desire to surf, or ‘wave slide’ as was the original Hawaiian term, prevails over the prospect of the cold. Guernsey Surf School manager Steve Hardy describes his greatest surfing experience as, ‘surfing perfect warm waves in Fiji’, though the cooler conditions of home do little to discourage him, ‘I am a better person after catching a few waves, if it means going into a freezing cold sea, then so be it’. This is undoubtedly a sport that gets you hooked from the off. Having started surfing at seventeen, Steve’s new found passion led him to hit the road as soon as he could drive, surfing every weekend before moving to Cornwall in 2001. Not only this, it led him into a career of instructing, ‘if you have a job you don’t mind getting out of bed for in the morning, then that is the job for you. I have no problems getting out of bed in the morning’. On what drives him to enter the sea in the cool climate of winter, local windsurfer Martyn Ogier replies ‘the thrill you know you’re going to get’. Martyn’s affair with the sport started at the age of eleven, leading him on to a string of successes within the competitive field of speed windsurfing. Included in this, is his attainment of the title ‘Britain’s highest ranked sailor’ a total of six times between 1990 and 1999. After twelve years of retirement, a self-confessed ‘midlife crisis’ led Martyn back into competition in 2009. Yet more success followed, with him gaining an impressive second place in the 2010 ISWA world rankings.

Outdoor endeavour has always been a mainstay of island life. As part of ‘The Centre Steps Crew’ back in 1964, Kevin Hinshaw recounts his surfing beginnings as being a natural step from snorkelling, open sea swimming and cliff diving. Though a world away from homemade wetsuits and ‘Gold Leaf’ cigarette sponsorship, Guernsey surfing exists to this day because of a passion for the sport being passed down through generations. Our larger neighbour Jersey, having pioneered the first ever regional surf event in 1963, as well as the first two European championships in 1969 and 1970, often dominates the media. None the less, Guernsey Surf Club, established in 1964, has been paramount in the recent increase of local competition. October 2nd 2016 recently concluded The Morgan Sharpe Junior Series, leaving eleven-year-old local ripper Tom Hook in 1st place for the under fourteen’s division. Scoring 1st place in Jersey’s Freedom Grom search event, on September 10th, has also left this young talent with a year long Quicksilver sponsorship, impressive when Tom states he was ‘nervous for the comp because the standard of surfing in Jersey is so high’. October 9th concluded this succession of triumphs, with young Tom reaching the semi-finals of The British Nationals in Perranporth. Tom’s parents advocate surfing, saying ‘It’s a big part of island life for many and a sport that the whole family can enjoy. It gets you out into the fresh air, is great exercise and a good way to meet people. It also doesn’t have to be expensive’. Easy to forget, is the fact that buying a wetsuit and a surfboard is an investment. Once you’ve got them, the outdoors is free. Surfing does come with its dangers. Ogier gives us plenty of evidence for that; a back injury in 1994 left him horizontal for three months, and it turns out that wiping out at fifty-one knots, post mid life crisis, is not advisable. Ocean awareness is crucial for

remaining safe in the water. The Guernsey Surf School offers free, annual beach safety talks to schools island wide, giving youngsters the chance to respect as well as have fun on the coast. So the next time you find yourself looking for winter entertainment, get involved. There are plenty who have taken the plunge and never looked back. Living on an island has its advantages, and surfing is undoubtedly one of them. Words by Ellie Cooper

SNORING MATTERS

We all know the exhaustion that follows a poor night’s sleep.

Photography Toby Le Ray

If this continues night after night, it can affect your daily life and may also damage your health! Poor sleep impacts on our body in many ways, having a detrimental effect on memory, ability to learn, immunity and body repair systems. Snoring is one of the commonest causes of disrupted sleep for the sufferer and those around them. In many cases snoring is primarily a nuisance but in 30 – 50% of all snorers it may be linked with an extremely serious medical condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) This occurs when breathing repeatedly stops or significantly reduces during sleep. Dr Roy Dookun is a local dentist with a special interest in dental sleep medicine. He lectures in the UK and Europe, teaching current best practice in this field. Roy qualified with honours from Newcastle University in 1979 and combined post graduate study, ultimately achieving his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, with heading his group of practices in Newcastle. Around this time, to improve his own life/ work balance Roy moved to Guernsey and was asked to work with local respiratory and ENT consultants to offer an alternative treatment for patients with snoring related sleep problems. Roy realised how little training and support was available and established the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2005 remaining President for 10 years. He is currently a Board Member of the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the only dentist in the UK to hold EADSM Expert Level Accreditation. So, how can visiting a suitably trained dentist help you when your life, or that of your partner is being made miserable by your snoring? An initial screening is essential to determine if your snoring indicates that

you could be suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. If this is a possibility, then you should be referred to a consultant for assessment and diagnosis. It is essential that anyone with OSA receives the appropriate medical treatment which may include recommending a dental sleep device or the use of an overnight breathing machine (CPAP) If you are a suitable candidate for a dental sleep device, the difference that it can make to your life is immediate and amazing! Apart from feeling more alert and refreshed yourself, gone are the days when your sleep partner complains that you have kept them awake or banishes you to the spare room. You will no longer feel embarrassed when staying with friends or sharing hotel accommodation and the device can be discretely placed if you wish to catch 40 winks when travelling. ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station.

Words by Mike Huston Station Director for Island FM and Channel 103.

Incredibly there are just a few weeks left until Christmas and indeed 2017. I am sure I am not alone in thinking where on earth has this year gone. With winter approaching we can expect some colder weather and all our summer clothes and flip flops can be put away until spring next year. Accompanying winter are the dark evenings and this makes walking and cycling much more dangerous and certainly for the children of our Bailiwick. Every year at this time Island FM is incredibly proud to be able to support and promote Be Safe Be Seen. As a radio station we have a great responsibility to get important key messages out to our audience. In my view any injury caused at night by not being appropriately seen is one too many. No message has greater importance and relevance at this time of year than “BE SAFE BE SEEN”

In addition we have also had several thousand BE SAFE BE SEEN stickers made that can be stuck on to just about everything but specifically school satchels, coats and bikes. There are many things to look forward to at this time of year (for me the weather is not one of them!) The message is as important as it has ever been. Let’s make sure we are all around to enjoy the festivities over the coming weeks and months. Let’s stay safe, and remember to BE SAFE BE SEEN

This year the promotion is sponsored by Guernsey Electricity and over the next few weeks we will be visiting a number of schools in our Bailiwick trying to educate our kids in a fun way about how important this initiative is.

My name is Toby Falla, I am 21 and was born and raised in Guernsey. I am a singer songwriter, actor and musician. I play the piano, cello, drums, guitar and I sing. But the thing that most people know me for is performing with the loop station. A pedal that I use to record and build live tracks on top of each other during my live performances a.k.a. creating my own backing tracks live on stage.

2015 at the Specsavers ‘Search for a Star’ competition. I managed to win the competition and come home with the trophy and prize money of £1000 which I spent on a new loop station, new guitar and other things to help me further my career. I was nervous before I got on stage, but in the moment I enjoyed every second and the feeling of 600 audience members cheering my name was euphoric.

How did you get started in music?

This summer

From a very young age my family has educated me in many different styles and genres of music. Artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Michael Jackson, Kings of Leon etc. And I really enjoy more modern artists like James Bay and Adele. Playing a variety of instruments I was able to tackle performing a range of different genres too, for example on the piano (grade 8) and cello (grade 8) I learnt classical music. When I play in Guernsey I play more pop/rock styled songs.

The summer of 2016 has been the craziest summer for me yet. I played as many gigs as I possibly could and the grand total was 72 gigs in 12 weeks. Some weekends I was playing six or seven gigs but I always had the energy to play the next one. It’s what I love to do! I played many different venues, firstly my Pub gigs - The Plough, The Mariners, Thomas de la Rue, The Wayside, The Vault, The Venture, The Golden Lion, The White Hart and The Jamaica. We have had a good time in every single one of these pubs and I’m very grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to play. I have also played some weddings, corporate events and charity nights.

Who was your first musical inspiration? My idol and biggest inspiration is Ed Sheeran. I am really connected to his music! I think that the way he writes lyrics and crafts melodies is genius. I’m always amazed at the way he can paint pictures with the lyrics. I first started using the loop station because of Ed and have now developed a stripped back acoustic sound very close to his style. I’ve been extremely fortunate to see Ed perform live twice, firstly in Manchester Arena followed by Wembley Stadium. A dream come true! As well as his music, his story inspires me due to his work ethic and determination. What has been your biggest performance? My biggest performance so far was in

My Show On September 9th I put on my own charity show at the Wayside Cheer Hotel. I stepped on stage as an Ed Sheeran tribute act and played a sell-out show to 200 people. I was extremely excited about this project as it was something completely different to anything that I have done before and unique to me. I designed and built the show from scratch. It was always a project that I wanted to do so I was very glad to be given the opportunity to make it happen. I raised a total of £1200 for the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief charity in loving memory of my godfather, Graeme Loveridge, who passed away two years ago. The Guernsey Society did an amazing job of giving him the best treatment and I wanted to help them continue their amazing work with other families. I tried to make my performance as realistic as possible, I wore a ginger wig and purchased tattoo sleeves which slipped over my arms and created the illusion perfectly. However I do have one real tattoo which is a paw print on my left arm and it is a tribute to Ed Sheeran, as it is exactly the same tattoo that he first had, in exactly the same place. I performed songs from his first and second album. The crowd was electric and for the entire second half the dance floor was full. I’m certainly grateful to everyone that came and allowed me to live one of my dreams.

What have you got lined up for us fans over the coming months? I’m currently back in Liverpool and studying at LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) founded by Sir Paul McCartney. I am studying acting and I’ve just started my third year. This year is going to be filled with showcases, shows and auditions. Very exciting things to come! Outside of LIPA I’m keeping busy with writing new music, learning new songs and playing gigs. The last few weekends I’ve had the amazing opportunity to get back on to the Cavern Stage. It had always been a big dream for me to play the Cavern Club and even now I still can’t believe that I have. It makes me feel like all of the hard work is paying off! I am also working on releasing an EP which will be all of my own original songs and I am very excited to get this project started! What do you miss most about Guernsey when you are at uni? The things I miss most about Guernsey when I’m in Liverpool are firstly my friends and family, my mum and my little dog, Scruff who can be a pain in the bum but I love him nevertheless!. I also really miss the sea, Something that I think people can take for granted and definitely something that I constantly think about. I’m really looking forward to coming back in the Christmas break and playing many more gigs with brandnew material and partying with all of my friends. Head over to GSY.gg. to watch the full interview and to keep up to date with his live performances. Photography by Paul Thomson, Insight Photography

LIFESTYLE. EXCLUSIVE.

Milton Jones, master of the deadpan pun and regular on Mock The Week, was recently flown over to Guernsey by Collaborate Communications to entertain at the Guernsey Construction Awards. Although it may seem like a straightforward gig for a seasoned comedian, this isn’t always necessarily the case, as Milton explains: “Last night someone fired a champagne cork and it got me right in the middle of the head...I was giving awards out. Fortunately, I was presenting the outstanding achievement award, and I literally had gone ‘the outstanding achievement award goes to...the person who’s just hit me in the face.’” Despite being one of Britain’s bestknown comedians, comedy wasn’t Milton’s first calling, having studied drama at Middlesex Polytechnic. “I tried to be an actor to begin with...no one else wanted me to be an actor, so I did standup, and that gradually took over.” I ask when he realised he could get up on stage and make people laugh: “Well, talk to some people - I haven’t even managed that yet. But...I was always better at messing around in school than actually doing work, without being particularly extrovert. I did drama clubs and that kind of thing, I was always better at that, but I hadn’t made the link of being able to do it as a living.”

and Indian shop owners whose first language wasn’t English. And so the sound guy laughed for half an hour, but no one else did.” As well as the puns and one-liners delivered in his famous deadpan, slightly neurotic style, Milton is also known for his messy hair and loud shirts (of which he owns about 70, most of them bought from a handful of retro shops in London). This stage persona “gradually evolved” in an effort to deflect attention away from the fact he sounded “a bit posh in some places,” or that he might be perceived as a “posh school boy.” Milton discovered that “if you stick your hair up, and put on a silly jumper or whatever, suddenly the status reverses. It’s like a big signpost to say, ‘this is leftfield,’ or, ‘it’s not what it seems.’ I usually say, the thicker the crowd the bigger the hair goes. Because they need a bigger signpost.” Although his style sets him apart from most of his peers, one-liners and puns are also the favoured form of some other famous comedians, most notably Tim Vine, Stewart Francis and Gary Delaney, the latter two having made several appearances on Mock The Week. And it would appear they’re not rivals: “I’m seeing Stewart for dinner tomorrow night, I saw Tim on Monday. I haven’t seen Gary for a while, he lives in Manchester so don’t see him as much. I get on very well with those guys, and I would go to dinner [with them], but I’d probably not go to a show so quickly. Because there’ll be probably things in Stewart’s act that I’d go ‘oh yeah, I was going to play with that.’” Writing jokes for a one man Milton Jones show is no mean feat; each show will have approximately 250 jokes in it, so Milton needs to write about 400 to get enough material. Consequently, he has a head full of jokes. “There was a bit in the last tour show where I said ‘just give me a subject, any subject.’” As the star turn at the Guernsey Construction Awards, I ask if he has any building-related jokes. “I’ve got a few…” He pauses. “I’ll take a look. As always with these things, you try out a couple of tester things and think ‘OK, that’s the way to go.’ Assuming they go for something. You know, it’ll be a case of...you should have got a Polish comedian, at least he’ll be quicker and cheaper.” Thankfully, they didn’t.

It wasn’t until Milton saw shows like Saturday Night Live that something resonated with him and he thought, as he says, “hang on a minute.” But it wasn’t a swift rise to fame. “It’s the cliché of standup is like learning a musical instrument except you do all your practice in public. And loads of people give up because of failing in public. That’s the key thing. And conversely, a number of people get good even though they weren’t very good to begin with, because they keep going. So there are a number of years where you’re just not that good, and it’s whether you get through that.” Happily for comedy fans, Milton did get through it; he just “kept going and kept going” until he finally turned a corner. Even though he’s now a successful entertainer, there are still times when things don’t quite go according to plan. “Being a comedian full time is coming to terms with the fact you’re going to fail at some point. At the Cardiff retail awards two years ago, just before I went on, someone said to me, ‘you know they don’t speak English, don’t you?’ And then you’re just on. It was all Chinese

THE BEST SONY YET! Airtel-Vodafone’s Showroom Supervisor, Jo, reviews the Sony Xperia XZ. I’ve been a Sony fan since the old Sony Ericsson days, and over the years I have yet to see any quality shortfall, with the new Xperia XZ easily matching today’s top handsets for quality and style. The XZ is one of fastest and most stable android devices on the market, with a premium design and a vivid 5.2-inch full HD 1080p screen. The whopping 23MP rear camera is an added bonus, producing crisp photos and videos using predictive auto-focus. Using the new Stamina battery-saving mode, my battery lasted for nearly two full days of general use, an amazing achievement in this daily-charge world! But my favourite innovation by far is having the fingerprint scanner on the right-hand side of the phone, although this could be a bit awkward if you’re a leftie. The XZ is also water and dust-resistant which is great in avoiding potential phone-ruining disasters. Overall, if you’re looking for a premium quality phone with a long lifetime then look no further. Available in black and deep pink 32GB, with prices starting from only £28.90 per month, on the Power 125 plan. Pop in-store for more details. Price correct at time of going to print.

MATT’S TOP TIP FROM AIRTEL-VODAFONE

HOW MUCH DATA DOES FACEBOOK USE? Facebook can use a surprisingly large amount of data – up to 1MB-3MB per minute depending on what you are browsing. The average Facebook user spends over eight hours online each month which can add up to 1GB of data used per month on Facebook alone. A good trick to limit the amount of data Facebook consumes is to turn off video autoplay: Open Facebook Settings ---> Account Settings ---> Videos and Photos ---> Autoplay ---> choose On Wi-Fi connections Only or Never Autoplay Videos. Our property pages are here to help you learn more about the property market and everything you need to know when buying or selling your new home. Thanks to our partners below, we're able to bring you the following pages of listings and ideas in wonderful full gloss print.

MOVING ON? Are there reasons for optimism in the Local Housing Market? This is a question estate agents are asked almost on a daily basis and one we all probably have different opinions about however one thing we can agree on is that recently we have seen some positive initiatives from the private sector in highlighting to the States of Guernsey the issues islanders are facing when it come to buying property. Over the summer, Finance for Guernsey undertook extensive market research to identify whether a lack of access to finance is adversely impacting Guernsey people and businesses. Their industry feedback suggested that funding issues were restricting islanders from getting onto, and progressing up the property ladder, preventing entrepreneurs and SMEs establish and grow business ventures, and causing issues for local corporates and businesses in the finance sector when setting up and maintaining banking relationships. Finance for Guernsey believe there is an appetite for a Bank that would be locally owned and universally accessible to anyone resident in the Bailiwick, thus hopefully creating a mortgage product more tailored to Guernsey and the first time buyers market.

Alex Ford, Managing Director After working in the property industry in Guernsey for a number of years Alex acquired Sarnia Estate Agents and has used his extensive catalogue of contacts and reputation to provide unparalleled client satisfaction.

Sarnia Estate Agents have a combined 41 years of experience in property with an unsurpassed reputation for professionalism and expertise. They offer a very wide selection of property in Guernsey with proactive staff excelling in sales, lettings and property management.

+

We also saw a working party of local industry representatives come together and offering a proposal to introduce a new first time buyers deposit loan scheme that would be backed by the States of Guernsey. As we all know one of the biggest challenges facing the local housing market is how first time buyers can be encouraged to take the first step onto the property ladder. Often this first step is the most difficult and frustrating, the majority of young people can afford the mortgage repayments (normally equivalent to their current rent) but cannot raise the necessary deposit.

ANY ISSUES YOU'D LIKE RAISED? info@gsymedia.gg

Both initiatives have great potential to enhance the future prosperity of Guernsey and we all eagerly await the States of Guernsey decisions on moulding the islands future.

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN DESIGN:

Words Polly Tapper Images Richard Brine

Where the most important ingredient is YOU. If you’re anything like me, your kitchen is a critical part of your everyday and social life. Inspired by celebrity chefs, we don’t just want to cook to eat, we want to show off our cooking and entertaining prowess, and it all starts with having a great space. Kitchens have come a long way since the 1950s when they were almost shutoff rooms at the back of houses. Current kitchen design is all about integrating lifestyle, light and space to create the perfect balance for the home and most importantly, for the families, young and not-so young, retired couples and singles who live there. According to Sandra Robinson, Showroom Manager at Acorn Lifestyle, St. Peter Port, “Guernsey residents are very houseproud” and want to live in places that are comfortable and balanced. This isn't surprising given in late 2015, 60% of all domestic properties in Guernsey were owner occupied, according to the Guernsey Annual Housing Bulletin. Sandra also believes that once people get the location right for their home, they are more likely to renovate or make changes, rather than sell and rebuy. According to the 2012-13 Household Expenditure Survey Report, Guernsey households spent on average 13% of their weekly expenditure on home improvements (among other items, such as holiday and money gifts and orders) and for mortgage holders this accounted for their 2nd highest spend category at about £214 a week. So given the significance of such an investment, how can you be sure to get your kitchen right? Jamie Falla, Design Director at Jamie Falla Architects suggests that the most important consideration for kitchen design is getting the balance right for the client. He says that it's all about understanding and sometimes really challenging the client to understand how they want to live in their kitchen. Sometimes, it's not even about the design of the kitchen, but whether the kitchen is even in the right location in the house. According to Jamie, the kitchen is all about the bigger picture and that’s about lifestyle. “We all aspire to live in a simple

way...In the 50s, if the kitchen was meant to liberate people, it certainly didn’t. It [architecture] tied people to the kitchen...The woman was taken out of the family life.” Our lifestyles have significantly changed since that time, and even fundamentally, in many households the jobs of the kitchen, such as preparing and cooking food and cleaning are no longer just the woman’s domain. The way we now choose to live, and the different sizes and make-up of our households have been reflected particularly in the changes to the design of the kitchen space. The kitchen space is more likely to be part of an open space along with the dining area and even outside. People see this space as the heart of the home, and it needs to capture the many functions of family life, such as eating, sharing meals and cups of tea, homework, television and entertaining guests. But whilst we’re all looking to create this space to suit the way we live, we are all so time-poor and this has to be factored into kitchen design. Sandra and Jamie both

talked about current design being all about hiding the clutter, and making the kitchen practical. Sandra says, “there is a balance between being practical and having the look and the wow factor that people want...Everything is hidden now. [Kitchen design is all about] clean lines, easy to clean and clear worktops. Even in traditional kitchens.” Guernsey architecture is even taking inspiration from another island, and the writer’s homeland, Australia. In Australia, domestic architecture has long been about incorporating the more outdoor elements of lifestyle into the home, such as extending barbecue spaces into outdoor kitchens or creating kitchens that open onto outdoor entertainment areas. Jamie believes that Guernsey locals are looking to take advantage of our sunny weather here (even if it’s a shorter season than in Australia) and incorporate this into their homes with clean lines and lighting. Some of the latest kitchen trends and their design features, according to Sandra and Jamie: •

built-in taps that pour out boiling water means no more kettle on the benchtop

a double dishwasher solution which means you never have to empty the dishwasher, and then raising these up so that you don’t have to bend over to get things into and out of them

hidden larders where all our appliances and pantry items can be hidden from view

Slimline storage solutions that make it easy to find what you need

There are kitchen design solutions to suit all budgets and Jamie even suggests a simple DIY could be to paint the walls white and put in some practical white laminate benchtops. Sandra suggests to start the process by looking through home magazines and identifying both what you like and even what you don’t like. However the benefit of using professionals, like architects and kitchen designers is that they will take you through the process one step at a time and first and foremost really seek to understand how you live and how your kitchen can balance with your lifestyle.

THIS IS NOT A KITCHEN THIS IS ART Cucine Interiors has launched its own exclusive range of contemporary kitchens, an exciting concept where no two kitchens can ever be the same! Working with the colours and finishes you’ve chosen, adding all the functionality you need, your kitchen will be truly individual. Bespoke design, made in Italy, endless possibilities. What will you choose?

DARREN ETASSE – He just changed the FM game. What is the recipe for success? " For starters, a healthy dose of ambition and grit are essential. But, finding the right balance between passion and reason and the correct industry in which to make your mark can all have a significant impact."

BUSINESS. FEATURE.

N

ovember is GSYLife’s balance issue, so we thought it appropriate to introduce a Guernsey businessman who has succeeded in getting this balancing act right. A recent addition to Guernsey’s ever expanding pool of corporate entrepreneurs - meet Darren Etasse. Etasse is the founder of FME Integrated, a homegrown Facilities Management Consultancy which was kick-started on the Island in June this year. In choosing to take that first step towards establishing a new company, successful businesspeople will agree that no one can spot every opportunity or anticipate every threat. And in a climate where efficiency is the norm, savings are expected and everyone is doing more for less, facilities management services are facing ever greater scrutiny and evaluation. However, with over 22 years of locally based experience as the MD of AFM Ltd and a qualified IOD Director, Etasse spotted an entrepreneurial opportunity and decided to take the plunge and pioneer a new approach to facilities management within the Channel Islands. “During my career with AFM, I was responsible for securing, designing and delivering multi-million pounds worth of building services in Guernsey and Jersey. “This provided a great platform for me, to consult future clients on the ongoing facilities maintenance systems within their properties.” FME Integrated is the Channel Islands only independent Facilities Management Consultancy practice and consists of a dedicated team of consultants. They provide direct advice and support to their local clientele, offering tailored packages which include mechanical and electrical design as well as facilities maintenance consultancy services. Their efficient and cost effective methods of streamlining clients’ facilities management expenses are what sets FME Integrated apart from the rest. “We have extensive experience within the local and offshore Facilities Management Services markets, dealing with technical elements ranging from air conditioning to electrical and the nontechnical aspects such as cleaning and concierge to name a few. “We work with Facilities Managers concentrating on the technical elements of FM - which is also the largest financial outlay throughout the year.”

I asked Etasse a series of questions ranging from conversational to serious in an effort to gain greater insight into the creative mind of this innovative and interesting entrepreneur.

business being kept within the Channel Islands, rather than it being outsourced to UK service chain providers.

What are your philosophies?

We work with a variety of clients and sectors due to the range of services we offer, from property managers and facilities managers to architects and quantity surveyors.

personal

business

Don’t stop when you’re tired, stop when you’re done, and as the famous F1 driver Mario Andretti said: “If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.”

Who do you work with?

What sets FME apart from others in the field?

Is there a specific project that you’re working on at the moment?

Simply, the people that we employ, they will always make the difference.

There are plenty, but, in January we are due to coordinate a large Facilities Maintenance contract. We will be providing on-island support in Guernsey and Jersey for a large Global Facilities Company which manages properties for a prestigious bank worldwide.

What about FME are you the most passionate?

Don’t stop when you’re tired, stop when you’re done, and as the famous F1 driver Mario Andretti said: “If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

Usually large companies will use in-house teams for the numerous technical and cleaning services. However, within the Channel Islands this isn’t an option mainly due to the small size of property portfolio. Our role will be to coordinate various local companies from property managers, professional advisors and trade contractors to support all the maintenance requirements and legal matters surrounding a property. In what way does FME contribute to island life? I would like to think that locally based supply companies are benefitting from

#09. NOVEMBER 2016. THE BALANCE ISSUE

Providing a service that creates real commercial value and financial savings for our clients. What effect has the announcement of Brexit had on FME? I don’t think anyone can be 100 percent sure of what the impact will be short term. Overall, we have benefited from the announcement, as many companies are always looking for cost savings on the non-core elements of their business, this normally falls into the outsourced services elements to identify savings. You are a qualified Building Services Designer and Member of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers; What activity does this cover within FME? Building services is a term for all the technical systems that are designed and installed within commercial buildings. Having an extensive knowledge of these systems from design to completion, we are able to provide clients with the essential advice needed to maintain them within their properties. This Includes creating financial budgets and providing Property Managers/landlords with sinking fund valuations on technical equipment. What’s next for FME Integrated? I am passionate about creating new business and opportunities. With FME’s unique skill set and bespoke local knowledge of the industry, I can envisage numerous opportunities, working alongside existing companies or creating formal partnerships with our UK client base.

CHINESE FAMILY OFFICE DELEGATION LEARNS FROM GUERNSEY A delegation from the Shanghai-based Griffin Plutus Family Office has completed a bespoke fiduciary qualification while on a week-long trip to Guernsey to meet with service providers from the island. The visit was arranged by Guernsey Finance, which worked with the GTA University Centre, as well as the Guernsey Association of Trustees Guernsey branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and local trust, legal and finance practitioners to host an onisland training course. The course was specifically designed for the delegation after Griffin Plutus Family Office expressed the desire to learn more about Guernsey’s position as a leading offshore jurisdiction and understand the regulations and structures that exist on the island. Antoine Kuo, Founder of Griffin Plutus Family Office, was one of five people from his office to complete the qualification. Mr Kuo, who has more than 25 years’ experience in private banking and offshore finance, has a well-established relationship with Guernsey having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guernsey Finance in his role as Chairman of the Shanghai Family Office Union. He was also a speaker at the launch event for Guernsey Finance’s Hong Kong representative office in March this year. Mr Kuo said that the island’s standard of regulation and flexible range of structures were important to the Chinese market and the week-long course had provided a greater insight into the way Guernsey operates.

and hospitality shown towards us. These are some of the key reasons why Guernsey maintains its leading position in the private wealth market,” said Mr Kuo. “This visit will strengthen the relationship and cooperation we have with Guernsey to provide top tier global private wealth services for the Chinese market. We truly appreciate all the arrangements made for us by Guernsey Finance’s Kate Clouston and the GTA University Centre, and thank all the institutions that provided such detailed information in our tutorial classes.” In addition to completing their qualification, the Griffin Plutus Family Office team also met with a range of Guernsey service providers, local government and industry trade associations. The visit culminated in a tour of Guernsey’s Royal Court by the Deputy Bailiff of Guernsey, Richard McMahon. Kate Clouston, Director of International Business Development at Guernsey Finance, said the course and visit had been arranged as a result of the desire of Mr Kuo and his colleagues to learn about Guernsey’s position as a leading offshore jurisdiction for private wealth. “We’re delighted that someone with Antoine’s background recognises that Guernsey boasts significant experience and expertise in this area and wants to learn from us in terms of how we establish and operate fiduciary structures for clients from around the world,” said Miss Clouston. “This is a significant development in Guernsey’s relationship with China in bringing these influential contacts to the island and we are hopeful that future partnerships will develop as a result. We are already aware of enquiries that have taken place since the delegation’s visit. The support of Guernsey firms over the course of the week was crucial to the success of the visit and affirms that mainland China is a key market for industry.” In addition to Mr Kuo, the other members of staff from Griffin Plutus Family Office who completed the qualification were: Jeorick Jun Xu, Managing Director; Isabel Rui Xu, Head of Legal and Compliance; Ryan Junyan Chen, Investment Management and Jason Jianquan Zhang, Paralegal.

“Through more than 40 meetings and classes over five days with some of the best practitioners in Guernsey, we were not only impressed by the professional expertise and well-regulated environment Guernsey has to offer, but also the warmth

NEARLY 50 STAFF OBTAIN ADVANCED COMPLIANCE QUALIFICATION Nearly 50 NatWest employees have obtained a key qualification in managing risk and compliance, following completion of a six-month programme and examinations. The International Compliance Association Advanced Certificate in Customer Due Diligence is designed for industry professionals who manage risk in the customer due diligence process. NatWest, which consistently invests in enhancing the skills of its workforce, was keen to support staff taking this course, the only professional qualification available in practical Customer Due Diligence. Employees attended a number of workshops, which included ‘mock’ exercises reflecting the practical scenarios that they will encounter in their everyday customer due diligence work. At the end of the six-month programme, the employees completed a three-hour examination. More than half those on the course achieved a Distinction in the exam and there was a 100 per cent pass rate. Of those that completed the course, 21 are working for the Bank in Jersey, 24 are based in the Isle of Man and two are in Guernsey. Tracy Burns, Head of Services, NatWest commented: ‘We believe it’s important that we equip our employees with the skills they need to meet the increasing anti-money laundering regulation and ‘know your customer’ rules that govern today’s international banking environment. Having employees who are skilled in detecting suspicious or illegal activity enhances the quality of the service we provide to our customers across all of our jurisdictions and helps us to keep our customers and the bank safe and secure.

Invest with Bob Balancing Out Emotions The autumn of 2016 is turning out to be one of those odd uncomfortable times to be an investor. While returns have been generally good many investors that we speak with are nervous. This type of rapid rise in asset prices naturally triggers our “I should do something” reflex. While such moves can on occasion warrant action it is important to remember that this response is, at least in part, an emotional one and emotions can lead to bad decisions when it comes to money. For those readers who don’t follow markets on a daily basis (well done, that is good investing psychology) a quick recap. So far 2016 has been a bumper year as rising markets have been compounded by the collapse in the value of the Pound. World equities for example are up some 25% in Sterling terms with around 20% of that coming from the currency move. It is not just shares however that have made gains. The average UK corporate bond fund is also up around 10% on the year leaving many people’s portfolios posting returns in the double digits. When we see charts like the below it is only natural to ask: what comes next? The honest answer is that nobody really knows. Capital gains in markets are often delivered in lumps with protracted periods of directionless markets giving way to dramatic moves. Today we just don’t know if we are in the middle of a longer trend or coming to the end of a shorter one.

BOB TANNAHILL, Ravenscroft Investment Management There is certainly plenty to worry about in the world. In politics populism is sweeping across the globe with phenomenon like Brexit and Trump being symptoms of this trend. In economics the usually sleepy domain of monetary policy is delving into uncharted territory. Can our economies function with negative interest rates? The answer from central banks seems to be to give it a go and see what happens, not exactly in keeping with their image as a steady hand at the tiller. An uncertain future however is nothing new in markets. Periods of calm and quiet are rare especially in recent years. The challenge for us is that we are all human and an endless stream of sensationalist headlines naturally unsettles our emotions. So how can we cope with unpredictable markets and help balance out our emotional highs and lows? The best way we have found is to focus on what we can know as this prevents us from obsessing over those things that we can’t. We know our

30% 30% 25% 25% 20%

long term objectives. While we can’t predict if markets will go up or down in the short term we can work out which assets are likely to allow us to meet our goals in the longer run. We can know if companies are well run, profitable and have products that resist competition. We can also know the prices we are being asked to pay for assets, known as valuations. It is sticking to the tangible facts that we find helps keep us on the straight and narrow and balances out our emotions when it comes to investing. So what do we know today? We know that there are still many great firms out there which are making healthy profits for their investors. We also know that the price you have to pay for these firms has gone up and valuations are no longer at bargain levels. As we firmly believe that in the short term markets are unpredictable where we have sold some of our more expensive positions we have not parked the proceeds in cash. We have re-invested the capital into more defensive assets. These give us the flexibility to pick up any bargains that do arise, whilst also providing us with a modest return whilst we wait for such opportunities to appear.

THINKING DIGITALLY IS IN GEORGE BETT’S DNA...

Words Laurenci Dow

George is the owner of GB Consult, a digital marketing consultancy which has been waving its creative magic wand across the Island since the start of this year. After ten years of living, working and gaining a wealth of experience in London where he supported some of the world’s largest organisations such as Debenhams, WH Smiths and Hilton Hotels, as well as smaller business accounts, George has an overarching understanding of the variation of budgets, objectives and challenges faced by different companies. Having made the decision to return to Guernsey, George and his wife Imogen are rediscovering the joys of island living and are ready “to make a mark in the digital landscape.” Every business decision is motivated by a desire to find answers to very specific questions. And the people who succeed in entrepreneurial endeavours tend to be pragmatic problem solvers. Both statements hold true in George’s decision to establish GB Consult in Guernsey. “Guernsey offers a real opportunity for local business to exploit the benefits of digital marketing. “The island has the added advantage of the tourist trade which boosts the economy during the warmer months. “I am very excited to help local businesses make the most of these opportunities, whether targeting the cruise ship visitors or the more traditional holiday maker, I am convinced that online marketing can help our local businesses thrive.” When he launched GB Consult, George made the conscientious decision to take a holistic approach towards digital marketing. Structuring the company around bespoke online strategies, George believes that when it comes to digital marketing “one size does not fit all.” This way GB Consult stays ahead of the online game while their competitors fight to keep up.

GB Consult provide their clients with direct advice concerning the importance of all digital channels and the effect they have on consumer decision making. They offer their dynamic expertise in services such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Pay Per Click (PPC), Content marketing, Social Media and Analytics to name a few. Reflecting on the current state of digital marketing, I asked George a series of questions to hear how GB Consult plans to score big marketing wins and building forward-thinking strategies for their Channel Island clientele. Tell me about GB Consult and what you offer? GB Consult allows businesses of all sizes to gain access to digital marketing expertise without the risk and commitment of a long term contract. We easily adapt to the needs of our clients working with some on a monthly basis and offering others a focused start up digital marketing plan. We believe that businesses of all sizes can benefit from a sound digital strategy and GB Consult aims to make this as easy as possible. What are some of the projects GB Consult has taken on? Since we launched we have taken on a number of different clients and challenges, from local personal trainers at FryFit to international e-commerce sites based in Guernsey. One of the most exciting projects we are involved in is the development at St Pierre Park Golf Course – our team stays busy ensuring that the islanders are kept in touch and up to date with all the changes taking place down there. How does GB Consult contribute to Island life? I love this Island and I am delighted to be back with my growing family. We have all the tools in Guernsey to take

#09. NOVEMBER 2016. THE BALANCE ISSUE

advantage of new and innovative digital marketing techniques. GB Consult is here to guide local companies through the mashup of online marketing buzzwords, abbreviations and platforms. What sets GB Consult apart from others in the field? I genuinely believe that the level of experience we have at GB Consult is hard to match. That coupled with no contracts, our competitive rates and deliverables, we are able to offer something for everyone. What would you say most motivates you to do what you do? I love digital marketing; I enjoy the fact that it is easy to witness the success of a campaign. I am motivated by getting local business involved in something they thought was only necessary for much larger corporate companies. What are the goals you most want your company to accomplish? My goals are modest at this stage, I want to build my client list and continue to prove to my clients that they can get a return from good digital marketing. Eventually, I would like to build my consultancy across the Channel Islands and who knows, possibly the UK. I firmly believe that my consultancy model is a better option for smaller businesses then a traditional agency model, so in many ways the small business world is my oyster. What are you looking forward to? On a personal note I should probably say the birth of my first child, although that is said with a certain amount of trepidation! From a professional point of view, I am looking forward to becoming engrained in the local community and expanding my list of local clients. BUSINESS. MONEY.

BALANCING ACTThe art of stoozing Ever since I can remember I have been obsessed with the idea of “making your money work for you”. I can vividly recall the shock I experienced when I first calculated how much my £10,000 pounds would be worth (an amount I never had) if I was able to invest it, untouched, for 50 years and could achieve a compounded annual growth rate of 10% (I’ll save you from having to crack out the calculator - a mere £1,173,908.53). To this day the power of compounding (and its ability to transform a modest current saving into a considerable future sum) continues to fascinate me. According to a recent report by the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society those looking to retire in 2050 will need to have accumulated a pension pot of £666,000 in order to experience the same level of comfort as pensioners in retirement today. Whilst this might initially appear a daunting task, the power of compounding should not be overlooked (as the above example demonstrates). However, whilst compounding can clearly help, it only works if you have an initial lump sum for such an effect to act upon. That’s where this month’s finance trick comes into play – please join me in welcoming the humble balance transfer credit card to the party. These handy bits of plastic can be used to transfer existing debt from another credit card. Such cards normally offer a 0% interest period and this can be particular useful if you are currently paying a high rate of interest on a credit card. This can save you hundreds of pounds in interest a year and this alone will help you to reach that investment target quicker.

be good practice, by adopting a process commonly referred to as “stoozing” you can effectively generate a profit on money that you have already spent. Intrigued? Instead of paying down your existing credit card (card A) at the end of the month you transfer the debt to a new 0% balance transfer card (card B). At the same time, you invest the cash that you had initially planned to use to pay off card A into an asset with the same time horizon as the 0% offer on card B. At the end of the period you use the capital initially invested to pay off card B and any excess is yours to keep. The technique is definitely best illustrated with an example. At the time of writing the longest 0% card available is for 41 months and this has a 3.29% handling fee on balance transfers (the longest 0% card with no associated fee is 25 months). If you transferred £5,000 worth of debt this would cost £164.50 in fees. The minimum monthly repayment is 1% of the monthly balance so if you deduct 41 months’ worth of minimum payments from the £5000 cash lump sum you are left with approximately £3,255 to invest. Assuming an annual return of 3%, at the end of the 0% period, the £3,255 would be worth £3,607 and your overall profit would amount to £187.50 (£3,607 £3,255 balance - £164.50 charge). Not bad when you consider that this is effectively money that you have already spent!

However, savings achieved on interest rates (for genuine debt) are not the only way you can put these 0% card offers to work in order to benefit financially. Many people effectively choose to treat credit cards expenditure as a cash advance – opting to pay the balance off in full at the end of each month and thereby alleviating any interest payment. Whilst this is generally considered to

#09. NOVEMBER 2016. THE BALANCE ISSUE

Of course, the amount you can potentially make will vary dramatically depending on a number of factors. The rate of return has a considerable effect (all other things being equal, a 10% pa return on the above would have left you to pocket £1,155) and your ability to obtain credit is also a limiting factor – a card with a credit limit of £1,000 clearly leaves less scope to generate excess returns than one which would allow you to transfer (and thus invest) up to £10,000. Somewhat ironically then, stoozing is potentially damaging to your credit rating (especially if, like me, you try and maximise the efficiency by using all of the available limit). This sudden influx of debt will almost certainly trigger some alarm bells and this could diminish your ability to obtain additional credit - at least until the 0% period ends and you pay off the remainder of the balance – so it is important to consider your likely financial situation over the investment period. For the sake of clarity, if you are in any doubt about your short-term need for future credit then stoozing is a technique to avoid. However, for those with good financial discipline (combined with a solid understanding of balancing risk and reward) stoozing can prove a useful tool and offer a viable way of putting your money to work.

CAREER FOCUS

RICHARD MARCH Manager Ipes, Luxembourg

Meet Richard March, Manager of Corporate Services at Ipes, Luxembourg. Richard joined Ipes in Guernsey after deciding to embark on a career change. Richard was previously a landscape gardener. Two years ago Richard took up an opportunity to be seconded to Ipes Luxembourg (subsequently took up a permanent position). Richard joined Ipes in 2007 as an Administrator. Following promotion Richard is now a Manager looking after a number of Private Equity structures. Richard tells us a little more about himself.

What does your average day look like? I wouldn’t say any day is average. As a manager I talk to my assistant managers every morning to understand what is coming up and what needs to be planned for. I am fortunate enough to have worked in different areas of the business for the last 9 years, so I am able to assist my colleagues. Every day is different and the variety is something I enjoy. What professional training do you undertake?

School attended: Grammar School Guernsey, South Devon College Torquay and Payap University in Thailand. What did you want to be when you were 8? A goal keeper for Manchester United. Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? Red. You can’t beat Guernsey for its great restaurants, and eating out is one of the things I most enjoy when I return to the Island. What is your favourite possession? My Nissan 350Z Fairlady. It took almost 18 months to import and register in Luxembourg and cost me a lot of money to do so. What made you choose to work for Ipes? My brother was working for Ipes 10 years ago and I was a gardener at the time. He suggested I send in my CV as I wanted a career change. I remember having the office tour and meeting one of the joint owners at the time (I used to mow his lawn). Ipes is focused on providing a quality service, but ultimately developing their employees and providing a good work life balance. Ipes supports professional study both financially and through a dedicated paid study leave programme. The opportunity for internal transfer to Ipes’ other locations made the role appealing as it offered many opportunities.

French is my main focus at the moment. Whilst we are an English group my colleagues speak French so it is important to me that I can speak in French with them. My fiancée, who I met in Luxembourg is also French, so I have no excuse. I have just started Level 2 French. I also studied for the diploma in International Financial Administration (IDFA) and I am currently under taking a further Diploma with the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA). Where is your journey taking you? I’m quite settled in Luxembourg and on a personal level we are starting to seriously consider buying a house in the surrounding area. I’m quite often saying ‘It’s not quite London, but coming from Island life, it’s very cosmopolitan’. I also like the fact that I can jump in the car and be in France, Germany or Belgium relatively quickly. I also have some great friends here. At the moment, Luxembourg seems to be the jurisdiction of choice for private equity fund managers, as there is more flexibility. Ipes’ Luxembourg office is growing and looking forward to some great opportunities. I am excited being a part of that. Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? For me, Ipes has always been very flexible and supportive, so should you wish to experience working in different areas, whether that is fund admin, new business, marketing, compliance or even in a different jurisdiction then do not be afraid to ask. When I initially heard that Luxembourg was seeking some support, I went to the Managing Director of the Guernsey office and said I was interested. If I hadn’t, then the opportunity to manage the corporate team here would have never presented itself.

About Ipes Ipes is a leading provider of outsourced services to Private Equity to Europe. Since 1998 we have grown to 240 employees over five locations in Guernsey, Jersey, London, Luxembourg and Cork. We focus on building long-term client relationships and apply the same approach with our staff by investing in their training and providing them a rewarding career.

LIVINGROOM STRENGTHENS ITS OPEN MARKET TEAM WITH NEW APPOINTMENT Experienced estate agency professional Caroline Nickolls has joined the Livingroom Open Market department adding another 12 years of local agency experience to this ever growing team. Miss Nickolls said: “The way Livingroom works and their excellent marketing strategies are very attractive. Joining the Open Market team allows me to use the expertise I’ve accrued in my career so far and apply it to an exciting and dynamic market.” She said: “Livingroom is a forwardthinking, modern agency with a great team supported by all the latest technology in the property sector.

GFC GOALKEEPER CHRIS TARDIF JOINS AFM’S PROJECTS TEAM AFM has appointed Chris Tardif to the position of project manager within its projects team. Mr Tardif, who plays in goal for Guernsey FC, joined the facilities management firm from Long Port, where he worked for six years in property management. ‘Having worked in construction in the UK and property management in Guernsey, I realised that my passion lies in the projects side of business. AFM’s projects team is well-respected within the industry and was a natural move to progress my career,’ said Mr Tardif, who is married with two children.

“One thing that struck me is their focus on quality; Livingroom has its own design team which is rare for an estate agent generally and unheard of in Guernsey. I’m really excited to work alongside Simon and his team in such a creative environment, building on the work they have done in its 10+ years so far.” Miss Nickolls’ appointment comes as Livingroom continue to increase their market share; its sales account for 24% of properties sold in 2016 so far – on an island with 23 estate agencies.

Mr Tardif was born and educated in Guernsey and moved to the UK at the age of 16 to take up a two-year apprenticeship with Portsmouth Football Club. He continued to play professional and semi-professional for 12 years and reached Championship level. ‘Chris is enjoying the variety and the challenges that are presented to him on a daily basis and is eager to make his mark within the organisation. He is looking forward to the interaction between our clients and contractors. Chris brings to AFM his experience in project management, managing specialist subcontractors and his energy in closing out complex projects. He will be a great addition to the AFM team,’ said Chris Leach, AFM’s key account director. ‘We are also hoping that he will impart some of his football knowledge to our own in-house football teams to help them win some games this season.’

BUSINESS. CHARITY.

P E E K JUST ING M M I W S The 40th Anniversary of the Skipton Swimarathon once again rallied the Guernsey community to raise money for charity. 1780 swimmers swam over 700km and their efforts are set to raise at least £55,000. The great support received means that £1,000 will be given to each of the 40 local charities chosen this year as Skipton Swimarathon beneficiaries. The remainder of the money will be divided between the event organisers, the Lions Club of Guernsey and Guernsey Round Table, so the money can go on to support even more good causes. Since 1977 the Swimarathon has raised over £1,385,000 for local charities and is one of the largest annual fundraising events on the island. For the first time the Skipton Swimarathon is supporting 40 different local charities. The decision to spread the sponsorship in this way was made to both reflect the community nature of the event and ensure that many smaller charities will receive some much needed and much deserved funding. The swimming action was not just at Beau Sejour. Throughout the week the Swimarathon At Large saw Les Beaucamps High School, The Grammar School, Elizabeth College, St Sampson’s High School and Le Murier School all take the plunge in their own pools. Steve Hogg, Chairman of the Skipton Swimarathon, said: “The 40th Anniversary has not only been a wonderful celebration but also a huge success. I would like to thank everyone who swam and to all those who supported and sponsored our swimmers. Their great support has ensured that charities across the Bailiwick will benefit.” He added: “The event is such that anyone can take part and join in the fun and I look forward to the next 40 years of raising money for local charities.”

20% OFF NEXT TREATMENT

Jim Coupe, Managing Director, Skipton International, said: “The Skipton Swimarathon has had a fantastic year for the 40th anniversary. We are proud to sponsor an event that brings together so many people. It not only raises money for charity but also promotes teamwork and healthy living. We thank everyone who supported the 40th Anniversary and hope they are excited to join us again next year.”

BUSINESS. GRILL. BUSINESS. FEATURE.

STEVE PAGECEO OF ASG ASG is an established FBO on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Guernsey is part of the southernmost group of islands that make up the British Isles

What is it like to work for you? I think it’s a good and essential balance between work and home life. We are a growing business undergoing quite a lot of change, so it’s important that we involve our employees in the process and get them to contribute to innovation and process improvements. We strive to be the best at what we do and that means continually challenging ourselves to do things better and that's a continuous process.

What do you as a company stand for? In the aviation business quality is king. We have to ensure compliance with strict international regulatory and safety requirements. Our services won’t always be the cheapest, however we have a very important reputation for quality that attracts repeat customers to visit us from all over Europe. We are also an ethical business, by that I mean that our business dealings are fair and reasonable with no surprises.

How does your company contribute to island life? Apart from employing some very highly qualified people, we facilitate the continued and safe operation of private and business aircraft that are based here and overseas that offer an alternative method of transport for Islanders. Our customers use their aircraft for business and pleasure, flying all over Europe. We

host the Guernsey International Aviation show each year which is a static display for business aircraft as well as involvement in the “meet the pilot” event organized by the airport. We also sponsor several local aviation events in both Guernsey and Alderney.

How do you ensure your employees are happy? Our staff turnover is very low with several of our employees being with ASG for over 20 years. The work at ASG is varied and interesting which stimulates all of us, promoting wellbeing.

What was your best personal mistake? About 15 years ago whilst working for a large aviation company I had a loud and unprofessional public argument with a work colleague right in the middle of a management meeting. The next day that

same colleague was announced as the new MD… There followed a few awkward conversations, but we went on to work closely together on some very successful new business ventures for the next 10 years.

As an island what should we do more of? Embrace innovation and change, whilst at the same time protecting Guernsey’s heritage and beauty. I realise this is a fine balance, but often I hear arbitrary objections to change and resistance to innovation by people who aren't necessarily considering the future welfare of the island.

What makes you love Guernsey? It’s the complete package really, Incredibly friendly and open people, beautiful coastline and some very nice restaurants.

BUSINESS. WORKSPACES.

Gin Tasting The vaulted cellar of the Bella Luce Hotel in St Martins is an atmospheric public space behind the bar with a lot going on. At the far end, atop an antique sideboard, sit the beautiful copper stills of the Wheadon’s Gin micro distillery, whilst the rest of the room is set with an assortment of comfortable seating and dining tables. With beautiful thick granite walls and arches, it is a room with a great deal of character and a lot of history. This is the space where the Bella’s proprietor Luke Wheadon handcrafts seasonal gins (often using locally foraged botanicals) and shares his passion through regular gin tastings and distillation experiences. Wheadon’s micro distillery has the air of an apothecary, with glass fronted cabinets, copper pots, pipes and stills, and rows of jars containing the often exotic botanicals used to produce his popular spirit. It feels like it should be a secret space, but the micro distillery is open to the public and Luke invites visitors to join him for a gin experience to learn more and even devise their own infusion that he will distill while they dine. “The cellar was the obvious space to house our beautiful copper stills, as it’s such a characterful room anyway and the micro distillery now creates a fantastic and very fitting focal point” said Luke, “It’s great gathering people around the stills and taking them on a journey through their favourite gins and cocktails, giving them a better understanding of why they like a particular gin and the botanicals used to create it.” As one of the Bella’s private dining rooms, the cellar can be set up for either small intimate dinners or larger functions, with a dedicated door into the award-winning kitchen. By day, it offers a quiet retreat for hotel guests or patrons of the bar to sit back with a book or a board game; there are plush sofas and vintage armchairs, not to mention the incredibly well stocked bar with attentive staff. It’s certainly a multifunctional room, but one that morphs from one focus to the next seamlessly, and incredibly stylishly.
