CLEAN AND BRIGHT bringing colour into your bathroom Words Polly Tapper in the quest for a clean looking bathroom many homeowners stick to white and chrome when it comes to bathroom design, but incorporating colour and patterns need not be bathroom taboo. The trick to getting it right is to create accents of colour, rather than a whole theme and to maintain clean surfaces. For those wishing to just dip a toe in, upgrading your tapware may be the best way to get a new look for your bathroom, and freshen things up. With recent gains in technology, tapware can be almost any colour you want with manufacturers offering “very feminine finishes like rose gold and more masculine finishes like black chrome, along with finishes like gold and brass nickel” explains Rachel Barclay, Senior Bathroom Designer at Channel Island Ceramics. Whenever a trend is seen in every second Pinterest image with hashtag ‘beautiful bathroom’, you know that it’s likely the trend is already on the way out, and so too, we can foresee that white butcher tiles will soon be another trend from the ‘past’. Instead you’ll now find recent Pinterest images showing showers lined with coloured and patterned tiles. Picture a shower recess covered with monochromatic, yet elaborate and almost gothic designed tiles – by itself it certainly looks incredibly busy, but within a bathroom of simple proportions, smart tapware and clean and empty space, the eye is drawn to the tiled shower recess as a feature in an otherwise minimalist scene, and so it works.

White will always be en vogue in bathroom design because it naturally gives us a bright, light and clean feel. However, this doesn’t mean that it is, in itself, a feature. More often we can see white walled and tiled bathrooms offset with striking and vibrant rugs, and perhaps a coloured vanity. It’s all about less is more and using colour to set a more relaxed, vibrant and comfortable scene in what can otherwise be an austere, and almost hospital-like space, if we let white overly dominate. Perhaps we won’t see the dramatic and overwhelming colours seen in 1950s’ bathroom design – an era when ceramic tended to take a pastel hue to match tiles, and walls to create a complete colour wave. But colour has had a coming home to ceramic as Rachel describes the current trends, “manufacturers are following suit with matching colours for furniture and handles, and ceramics finishes. Villeroy & Boch are offering a soft feminine colour palette for their basins from powder pink to powder blue, and black to match the more masculine black chrome.” Another way to set the tone for your bathroom is to consider the light and colour you can create with lighting. Lighting fixtures can be made a feature in a bathroom and even a small space can benefit from a lighting overhaul. Rachel shares her tips, “dramatic lighting has enhanced our bathrooms making them spaces to be enjoyed and relaxed in. Coloured or light changing LED strips help create atmosphere, blue and purple light for a cooler dramatic feel, yellow and red for a warmer light. Change your colour with your mood or practically how you use the bathroom.” As with any space, when considering design, functionality is paramount. This is particularly essential in the bathroom where you need to consider any material used and how well it can withstand the effects of steam and moisture to ensure you maintain a safe and clean environment. So, be careful when incorporating non-bathroom specific items and, in particular, when it comes to selecting floor tiles, check that they are non-slip. If in doubt, speak to a specialist bathroom designer or stockist for advice. No matter how much colour or space you have in your bathroom, the most pleasing design element will always be cleanliness. Most importantly, keep your bathroom free of clutter by utilising good storage. You can never waste space on good storage and, in a bathroom where space might be tight, look to the walls and under basin area to place storage so as to keep your floor space at a maximum. Don’t forget about the shower and bath and look for in-shower storage to keep shampoo and products neat and tidy. For those of us who don’t enjoy scrubbing our tapware and tiles to remove grime and limescale (I’m pretty sure that’s all of us), be sure to check out some of the latest technological advances in tile grout, tapware and shower hoses that incorporate anti-bacterial properties to make cleaning much easier and quicker. When it comes to planning your next bathroom makeover there’s no need to be dramatic, but do allow yourself to experiment with colour. You really can’t go wrong so long as you abide by the maxim, ‘less is more’, and keep the look clean, light and bright.
