A lot of people say to me “I want to learn how to contour like the Kardashians, how do they do it”. It’s easier than you think. It’s all about reshaping the face, highlighting the areas you want to stand out and contouring the areas you want to disappear. To bring out your cheekbones, find the hollow part by placing your fingers on the side of your face and feel where it dips underneath the bones, place the darker shade just above. The tip is to blend, start off with less product and build it up.

UPFRONT. TIPS.

IMPROVE

YOUR PORTRAITS.

By Mike Brehaut, Creative.gg

This month’s photography tip is all about improving your portrait photography using a simple tip. Have you ever photographed someone standing close to a wall or a tree? It’s easily done and I’ve seen it many times over the years. The problem with this is you can get a distracting or a dull background. If you look at the first picture with Eden, I’ve placed her right next to the wall and although a nice portrait, you can see the distracting lines from the wall behind her. In the second picture I’ve moved Eden a few feet away from the wall and instantly you can see a difference. The wall is much less distracting and out of focus giving a much more pleasing and professional look to the picture. You can have a lot of fun with this technique. Have a look around when you are out and about and see if you can spot backgrounds

that would look great out of focus. Anything can look good if it’s far away or out of focus enough. Old buildings, flower beds, wooded areas, anything really. Look for run down grungy backgrounds or bright and colourful ones. Before long you will be looking around even when you haven’t got your camera and spotting interesting compositions. hree things help to make your picture look great. The distance between your subject and the background, the length of lens you have and also the aperture (the hole through the middle). You don’t need fancy equipment for this, anything, even a camera phone will do but the effect will be greater with a longer or zoom lens.

hundreds of pictures without any real thought. It’s better to have a few good pictures than hundreds that are average. It also takes much less time to edit or go through them. Find your background and spend some time looking and placing your subject. If you’ve heard the DIY term “measure twice cut once” it’s similar in photography. Only when you are happy that everything is looking good, take your picture. This process will speed up as you practice, anything you do for the first time takes a bit of getting used to, but in no time you will be taking great portraits.

COMMUNITY NEWS A selection of community news, charitable activities and local events from within the Bailiwick.

FROM PLANT TO PLATE – WAITROSE LAUNCHES SCHOOL GROWING INITIATIVE As Waitrose celebrates its fifth anniversary in Guernsey, the supermarket is relaunching its ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme to promote a legacy of healthy eating among local school children. The Grow and Sell kits, provided by Waitrose to all local schools on the island, contain all the necessary equipment for growing a vegetable patch as well as stepby-step growing instructions designed by Waitrose. Aimed at seven to 11 year olds, the scheme has seen local schools develop their own vegetables patches and grow produce including lettuce, courgettes and basil. The kits also contain badges that designate both growing and selling roles so that children can experience both elements of the scheme. Ian Burdekin, branch manager of Waitrose Admiral Park, said: “Since our branches opened in 2011, we have made it our duty to be involved with the community. From the planting of an orchard at Delancey Park to our permanent food banks in branch, we aim to use the skills of our Partners, as all our staff are known, to support the island.

“Healthy eating is a key message for us, particularly the education of young people and we want to make that our legacy on the island. Our Partners will be working with the schools to check their progress and we’re looking forward to inviting them into our branches later this year.” The success of the annual scheme, which began in 2013, has resulted in an increase in the number of growing kits that

Waitrose will supply to schools. Growing kits will be given to the 17 Guernsey schools and Waitrose is extending the invitation to youth groups such as the Brownies or the Boys Brigade to come forward if they wish to get involved and receive growing kits.

risk of flooding. All streams are required by law to be cleared of vegetation and other obstructions by 15 June ahead of Parish inspections by the streams committees. Stephen Langlois, General Manager of Guernsey Water said: “It is very important that all waterways on the island are cleared of debris and other vegetation as this can cause low flows or even blockages if not removed. “If we suddenly experience a heavy downpour and the rainwater is unable to drain away, there could be serious flooding. We are asking that landowners work with our Parish douzaines to maintain their watercourses to reduce the risk of flooding and ensure we keep our valuable water flowing.” Guernsey Water works in partnership with the Parish douzaines who ultimately are responsible for ensuring that the waterways in each of their areas of the island are maintained. To clean a stream and ensure an unrestricted flow involves not only the cutting and removal of weed from the bed but also the removal of any other obstruction to the flow of water as well as silt, which may have accumulated in the stream bed. Streams absorb and store a significant amount of rainwater and runoff, but if they are not regularly maintained this can lead to localised flooding which in the past has caused road closures while the excess water is cleared.

WORLD AID WALK RAISES £40,000

To accompany the kits a specially designed ‘Grow and Sell’ app is available to advise teachers, parents and children about when to plant their crops and how to care for them. The app also provides information about where food comes from, how it’s produced and environmental issues such as the importance of seasonality and sustainability.

The 8th May 2016 – THIS year’s World Aid Walk has raised £40,000. More than a thousand people took part in the 46th walk with routes around Guernsey and Herm.

Students will then be invited to sell their produce in the Admiral Park and Rohais branches sometime during the summer term to raise money for their school.

The turnout was the best since 2010 much to the delight of chair of the organising committee Bella Farrell.

DEADLINE FOR CLEARING STREAMS APPROACHES

‘It was an amazing day and we are delighted with the response. To have such a great turnout with over 900 in Guernsey and more than 100 in Herm is incredible and has helped us raise £40,000 already with more sponsorship money to come in,’ said Mrs Farrell.

Guernsey Water is reminding islanders who have streams, douits, and other watercourses on their land to ensure that they are cleared of vegetation and silt by Wednesday 15 June. This vital maintenance of waterways is undertaken twice annually to ensure the unrestricted flow of water into the island’s catchments and to minimise the

In Guernsey, 508 youngsters between the ages of five and 18 took part which was the highest percentage in 10 years. Grammar School topped the numbers for the secondary schools with Vale having the most primary school aged children taking part. Castel Primary had the biggest increase in the number of pupils taking part.

Since the World Aid Walk was launched in 1970, more than £450,000 has been raised with this year’s charities being Action Aid, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Save the Children, The Tumaini Fund, The Eleanor Foundation and World Aid Walk sponsor Standard Chartered’s own charitable initiative Seeing is Believing. The Overseas Aid & Development Commission had pledged to match what was raised by walkers which Mrs Farrell said would make an enormous difference to the charities. ‘All of the charities are working with people living in some of the poorest regions in the world and are committed to providing support that enables communities to become more independent and selfsufficient. It’s humbling to know that so many people in Guernsey are prepared to take part in the World Aid Walk to help people they will never meet,’ she said. ‘I want to thank everyone who was involved. We have a fantastic team of volunteers, without whom we couldn’t continue organising it, our sponsors Standard Chartered not only funded us financially but entered a team of walkers and provided volunteers, we had

support from the parishes, the media, the emergency services and of course importantly we need to thank the walkers.’ Trevor Kelham, CEO of Standard Chartered Trust (Guernsey) Limited, said it was a great atmosphere. ‘Seeing hundreds of islanders of all ages in Market Square raring to go was really impressive. We are very fortunate to live in a place which is willing to get involved in events that will make a difference to people who don’t have access to food, water, basic housing and professional medical care,’ he said. ‘For Standard Chartered’s own charity Seeing is Believing to be included in the list of beneficiaries is something we are grateful to the organisers for allowing and we know the money will help prevent, treat and cure blindness across the world.’ The final amount raised together with the winners of various trophies will be announced at a presentation evening later this year and a film about this year’s event will be posted onto the website www. worldaidwalk.org.gg at the end of May.

IPES SIAM CUP This year’s Ipes Siam Cup took place on Saturday 7 May at Guernsey Rugby Football Club. This was the third year that Ipes sponsored the event. With the sun shining and a crowd of over 2,000 people, this year’s Ipes Siam Cup proved to once again be a thoroughly successful event and a fantastic day for one of the Channel Islands major sporting events. The annual rugby union competition is held between the Channel Island clubs of Jersey RFC and Guernsey RFC and has been contested annually since 1920, with each island hosting it every other year. This year’s event saw Guernsey’s Ladies team play a strong game, running in seven tries and taking home the trophy with a score of 41-12. This was their fifth straight Siam Cup success. Jersey claimed the Fallaize Cup second team honours with some style, winning 47-12, with the home try scorers Jim Regnard and Callum Murdoch. The Nash Cup for the Veteran’s teams was won back by the Guernsey team, with a score of 33-10. The highly anticipated Siam Cup match saw Guernsey leading at the interval with a score of 14-13. Towards the end of the second half however, Jersey’s extra physicality and professional conditioning overpowered the tired home side, and in the closing stages went over for three tries to hold onto the cup for another year. The final score was Jersey 33 - Guernsey 19. Man of the match was presented by Ipes Guernsey Managing Director, Andrew Whittaker, to Guernsey’s Ned Brown. During an initmate lunch hosted by Ipes in the Guernsey RFC’s clubhouse, Chairman of Guernsey Rugby Club, Martin Belcher, presented a signed canvas to Ipes on behalf of the club to show appreciation of Ipes’ support and contribution to rugby on the island. The presentation was accepted by Ipes’ Group Head of Business Development, Nigel Strachan. This is the 3rd year Ipes has sponsored the Siam Cup as part of a four year pan island deal. The involvement with the competition is the culmination of the company’s investment in rugby locally.

Catherine Best is a world renowned jewellery designer who has championed the use of unusual and often extremely rare gemstones. Catherine talked to YBG members about her philosophy to produce affordable works that can be worn on a daily basis alongside beautiful high value treasurers for those special moments in life. She outlined how the design and quality of these treasurers are being ultimately passed down through generations. Catherine also discussed how, due to the rarity of some of the materials used, Tanzanite, Paraiba Tourmaline, large Peridot, Mandarin Garnets and fine Spinels, to highlight a few, have already proved to be a good long term investment. A selection of gems were shown to YBG Members. and share them over some decent wine and good conversation, then order some more if you are still hungry. Food comes out of the kitchen relatively quickly and the relaxed Spanish vibe means that you’ll be in no mood to rush.

good restaurant is like baking a meringue — it only gives pleasure if all the elements are playing harmoniously at once. Attentive front-of-house, all of the kitchen sections on point, someone on the bar making decent cocktails, lively clientele and so on. All these things together create the soft fluffy peaks of a successful dessert. Remove a few elements and you’ve got scrambled egg whites.

Dishes range from sweet Padron peppers to grilled Iberico pork, the calamari is as tender as I’ve had and is served with olives and capers. There’s Manchego, smoked almond and spinach salad if you’re feeling healthy, Patatas Tinto with egg and bacon for those who want to fill up… if you like food then there is something on this menu for you. And just when you think that life doesn’t get any better they bring out the Churros; my taste buds thought they’d died and gone to heaven. I still have chocolate covered dreams about them nightly.

So how did Spanish eatery Tinto fair in the GSY Life meringue test? We were welcomed at the door by handsome Manager Tom who explained that it’s a casual eating venue and you don’t need to book, so you may have to wait for a short time until you can find a perch on one of their bar stool style seats. But this means that there is plenty of time to enjoy a drink before eating and with a large selection of Spanish wine and over 35 different Gins to choose from you are spoilt for choice. Gins are served with Fever Tree tonic and are served up in a goblet, adorned with a garnish to bring out the Gin’s flavors; giving the humble G&T a new, colourful lease of life. The atmosphere at Tinto can only be described as ‘buzzing’, it’s the kind of place you walk past and get a twinge of FOMO, it’s a tapas shaped slice of Barcelona on the streets of Guernsey. Roughly 20-25 dishes are listed out on the blackboard, there is no official menu, and are changed daily depending on what is in season and the mood in the kitchen. The idea is that you order several

Tinto is the brainchild local restaurateur Dave Matheson, the hat trick in his RED empire. Renowned for knowing how to put together a decent wine list, putting the ‘R’ in parrrrrty and working with top local Chef Christophe to create some of Guernsey’s finest dishes; Tinto does not disappoint on any level.

Tinto also has a lot to offer in the way of events, from Wine and Gin tastings at the bar to private parties where you can take over the whole venue. It’s the perfect size for a cocktail party, and a great location for corporate entertainment.

Tinto operates on a 'walk in' policy, but will take bookings for private events including Mondays and Tuesdays.

Dave Matheson, RED What flavours inspire you? The flavours that inspire are ever changing. It could be walking around a supermarket and seeing or smelling an ingredient Ive never used or forgotten about. It could be the freshest lemon on a tree in the middle of summer or fresh horseradish grated over a perfect Bloody Mary. How has the cocktail scene in Guernsey changed? The scene has changed dramatically since opening Laska & Bargo in 2002. Customer palates are a lot more sophisticated and the diversity of drinks, bars and service has improved significantly. What’s your favourite spirit and why? Bourbon, as it has depth of flavour, sweetness, strength and is challenging to work with to show each Bourbon in its best light. If you had to choose one, what would be your venue’s signature cocktail?

How has the cocktail scene in Guernsey changed?

Photography by Creative/Apéritif

Having just landed on the Guernsey scene I get the feeling that the island is willing to embrace new and creative ideas and with some of the new trends that are coming up they won’t be disappointed. What’s your favourite spirit and why?

Andrew Patton, The Hook

It’s always been gin! For me, it brings back great memories of brilliant summers spent at family celebrations and dancing at festivals with friends. It’s a drink we all share a love for.

What flavours inspire you?

If you had to choose one, what would be your venue’s signature cocktail?

A vast range of flavours inspire me when creating cocktails as we try to taylor our menus too suit all pallets but if I was to choose for myself it would be the likes dragon fruit kumquats and other Asian fruits that I have sampled and used in cocktails on my travels.

I am a big believer of encouraging each member of my team to have their own creation that they are passionate about and that represents them. This way my venue has a selection of signatures.

How has the cocktail scene in Guernsey changed?

Luke Wheadon, Bella Luce

Only being in Guernsey 9 months I have seen our menu at The Hook grow and become more adventurous in the hope we can bring the cocktail scene forward and in more keeping with mainland an capital city standards, which I believe is what our customers want and are learning to appreciate.

What flavours inspire you? I am most inspired with the incredible local ingredients that we forage seasonally that give our gins their unique characteristics.

What’s your favourite spirit and why? My favourite spirit at this moment in time is gin due to the vast range of gins on the market and the complexity of flavours in each different one, although in saying this we’re always trying to find new and strange products and that could change in a week.

How has the cocktail scene in Guernsey changed?

If you had to choose one, what would be your venue’s signature cocktail?

What’s your favourite spirit and why?

On our new menu I would say our cocktail the GSY. Standing for Guernsey and also housing Blue Bottle Gin (G) locally sourced sage (S) and yellow chartreuse (Y) along with a few other secret ingredients. It’s a very refreshing and clean drink perfect for our summer menu and hopefully will remind visitors of Guernsey and The Hook and Sling

The scene in Guernsey has become more interesting, more varied and more exciting with many bars offering a higher level of quality.

Adidas Tech Fit Sports Bra £21.50 Puma Long Sleeve Hooded Top £42.50 Nike Elite Fitness Gloves £16.75

Gin is obviously my favourite spirit. I think we live in a really interesting age where expressive flavours are coming to the forefront, whether that be with craft beers or gins and the choice now is incredible. If you had to choose one, what would be your venue’s signature cocktail? Our signature cocktails are based around our gins and at the moment we have a tangerine and hibiscus gin that we serve with muddled fresh strawberries and finished with Fever Tree elderflower tonic.

LIFESTYLE. TRAVEL.

Now we are in the midst of May, there is no better time to book your holiday (or one way flight depending on how much we can convince you) to Ibiza! The days are getting longer, the nights are getting shorter, the skies are getting bluer, the music is getting louder and most importantly, those temperatures are beginning to soar! Speaking of the music getting louder, you will find no better place on the face of this globe than the party capital when it comes to experiencing music. If you are looking to trial the biggest and best venues in the world, then look no further than Ibiza. From the likes of Amnesia Ibiza and Space Ibiza to DC10 Ibiza and Privilege Ibiza, the White Isle is home to the most unique clubbing fortresses on the planet.

It’s at places like those mentioned above where you can find the very best DJing talents in the world perfecting their craft throughout the summer months, with many of them holding down their very own residencies. Just to emphasise the importance of the clubbing mecca in Ibiza in 2016, this summer will see legendary Space Ibiza finally close its doors after 27 years of being on top hosting some of the best parties we have ever experienced as a human race! Coupled with this fact, Space Ibiza’s favourite resident DJ, Carl Cox will be bringing his 15-year residency with the club to a close with his Final Chapter of Music Is Revolution, every Tuesday from 14th June this summer.

You can virtually guarantee that dance floors everywhere will be jam-packed in 2016. Therefore, if you want a bit of space to yourself, why don’t you enjoy the beauties of the Ibiza nightlife from the finer comforts in some of Ibiza’s luxurious VIP inclusions as your very own VIP table, bottled service and your own bar, super-clubs like Pacha Ibiza and Ushuaïa Ibiza treat you like complete royalty. The nightlife isn’t the only thing Ibiza is famous for either. Whilst the White Isle stands head and shoulders above everywhere else on the planet in terms of nightlife, one shouldn’t presume Ibiza has forgotten to cater for other elements of its incredible island. Culture is a huge aspect to life in Ibiza and has been since we can even remember. If you rewind the tape back about 5,000 years ago, this is believed to be the estimated time that the first prehistoric people lived on the islands, mainly in mountain caves. However, from the early 19th century, the Balearic Islands have become a haven for musicians and writers and following the Second World War, tourism increased dramatically.

Despite this dramatic change though, some traditions remain strong and hospitality and courtesy still thrive. “Hola”, “Buenos dias” and “Buenos tardes” are common greetings and are always acknowledged. Siesta still applies between 2pm and 5pm. This allows the Spanish to dedicate more of their energy to these evenings into the early hours. Food is another wonderful aspect of life in Ibiza, dreamy in fact! Ibiza offers restaurants, cafes and bars with established reputations of the highest quality with that perfect added hint of decor and service to complete an all-round appetising experience.

“The White Isle is home to the most unique clubbing fortresses on the planet.”

After you’ve finished your meal, why not take a look around? Ibiza truly is a beautiful place and the scenery surrounding the White Isle is simply spectacular to look at. Complete with an extraordinary inland of amazing countryside, magnificent Mediterranean beaches, high towering cliffs, crystal blue waters and unrivalled nightlife, one can never get bored of taking in all the incredible views on offer on the White Isle. So now that you have several reasons to go to Ibiza this summer... what’s stopping you? Nothing, precisely! Now you need to pack your sun cream, flip-flops, dancing shoes and sunglasses and get ready for the summer of your life – Ibiza awaits. The IBZ Team www.myibiza.tv My Ibiza @myibizatv

Name: Emanuelle Bonham, Age 25, Place: Dubai

GSYLife loves to travel so we got in touch with three young Guerns that have plucked up the courage and ventured off into the big wide world.

Say Hi to Emanuelle who decided to leave Guernsey for the high rise skyscrapers of Dubai’s city.

What made you leave Guernsey? I absolutely loved my job and the people I had the chance to teach but there were limitations that I couldn’t sit around and wait to change. Guernsey is a fantastic place but it’s not always the first to innovate. I wanted to go to a place where there was no ceiling to opportunity and a place which would take me far away from my comfort zone. I wanted a challenge that I knew probably wouldn’t arise in Guernsey. Why did you choose that place? Dubai is a vibrant, over the top, amazing place if you take it for what it is. No concept or idea is too crazy and just by taking a look at what’s been created in such few years, you feel inspired. If you want to achieve anything, you can do it here. Dubai is also incredibly culturally varied, which I knew would teach me a lot and open my eyes to new ways of thinking. Plus I’m happiest in the sunshine :) What has been your best experience? Am I allowed to say the food? Everything from the Cheesecake Factory to The Four Seasons has been amazing. The culture is extremely indulgent so wherever you go you are bombarded with every single #05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

type of food you could dream of. If I had to put a finger on it, I’d say the moment I realised I could order Nando’s to my front door probably topped the list (it’s the small things). What was most challenging? The first few months are the toughest. Getting your visa complete, starting a phone contract etc… The culture is pretty laid back here so scheduling to meet people and trying to organise your day can be a challenge. Dubai’s computer systems fail very regularly so there’s been a number of failed attempts when I’ve trecked out to the middle of the desert only to be told come back tomorrow. Advice for new travellers. I can’t stress enough to read up on the place you’re moving to. I’ve saved myself a lot of hassle finding out beforehand everything I needed for my visa, driving license and documents I needed to take etc. Secondly, bring the things you like with you - a lot of things here are twice the price they are back home. Apart from that, just keep an open mind, meet as many people as you can and enjoy the experience!

What made you leave Guernsey? I left Guernsey to be with my wife (then fiancée) in Austin Texas; I had visited Austin many times while we were in a long distance relationship and fell in love with the place and with no long term financial commitments in Guernsey, it was the right decision to make for us. What has been your best experience? The people here really made me feel so welcome, I’ve lived in Austin for almost 3 years and it has always felt like home. Whether you’re downtown or in your local neighbourhood everyone is always super friendly and has a smile on their face. There’s such a positive attitude here that it would be hard for me to consider living anywhere else in the States. Also the Formula 1 and Moto GP races both come here…

Name: paige sowerby, Age: 21, Place: auckland, NZ Here’s Paige, she turned over a new…. leaf and headed down under!

What was most challenging? Missing family and friends is probably the toughest part, it’s not cheap to fly back to London (let alone back to Guernsey!) so visits are few and far between. Also my wife’s family live in Malaysia so we need to use our holiday time wisely. What have you discovered about yourself through travelling/living abroad?

What made you leave Guernsey?

Advice for new travellers.

Anyone who knows me can attest that I have always wanted to leave Guernsey. My dreams have always been too big to achieve whilst staying on our little rock. Although it’s a place with immense beauty that would give many other writers material for creating a whole new world, I found that growing up there meant that much of that beauty was clouded by my awkward teenage eyes. I wanted what I didn’t have.

To all of you looking to start your own adventures, my only advice is be yourself. Do what you want to do, and it’s surprising how many people don’t have the guts to do that. If you want to go backpacking across Europe, do it. Don’t take your friends, go on your own and make friends as you go, meet new people and have new experiences. Too many times I’ve heard of people dropping out of university or not even going in the first place just because their high school friends aren’t there with them. You may not need to run across the globe like I did, but take some real time for yourself and figure out who you want to be.

Originally I only went as far as Liverpool, enrolling in LJMU for my first year in creative writing. I can’t say anything bad about that year, I had fun, made some great friends, and I would recommend the city to anyone looking to live in the UK. For me, it just wasn’t a big enough change. That is why I decided to make the move to Auckland. I packed my life into 30kgs, and flew out to one of the furthest cities possible.

I’ve noticed that I push myself a lot

Name: Pierre de la Rue, Age: 29, Place: Austin, Texas harder from a professional level; there are a lot opportunities here, especially in the software industry and I’ve managed to develop a solid sales career very quickly in a short space of time. Advice for new travellers. My advice would be don’t judge a place until you’ve been there yourself; people who hear I live in Austin Texas think they’ll be surrounded by cowboys and cacti when in fact it’s one of the greenest and happiest places to be in the United States.

What has suprised you the most? One thing that really surprises me is how much I have grown and matured in the two years I have been here. I currently work as a barista and manager at a small café in an office block just outside the city centre. Working there has taught me that it’s okay to be normal, to have achievable goals. While I still hope to one day write a bestselling novel, I can now understand that big dreams like that don’t come true overnight.

ISLAND FM UPDATE

01

Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station. 02

Words by JAMES BENTLEY

Breakfast Show Host

03

Hi, I’m James Bentley. I’m the Breakfast show host at Island FM. What a lot of people think is that I turn up at Island FM at 6am in the morning and then go home at 10am. In the world of Island FM that isn’t the case. Richard Harding, Carl Ward and I, all do a full day’s work in different roles. When I come off air at 10am I turn into the Programme Manager, which means I work very closely with the commercial team, also with Carl who is our Head of Music and Richard, who keeps an eye on all our Bailiwick events and adds them to our Island Info, making sure that we have the right information to read out on air when it comes to Promotions and Sponsorships. The presenting team is far bigger than just the three of us though, as we have freelance presenters who come and help us cover shows when the full-timers are on holiday or we need sickness cover. They also take over at weekends with specialist shows including the Saturday Rewind and Sport Saturday. Without these guys we couldn’t make this radio station work as efficiently as it does. We are so lucky to have such a great team that loves working at the radio station and all feel really passionately about it. We all speak fondly about the history of the station going back to the 15th October 1992 when Madonna’s

‘La Isla Bonita’ was the first song to be played on Island FM. Who remembers the double decker bus? Or Daniel The Donkey leading the parade at the start of the Island Games in 2003? We could live in the past but we are always trying to move forward, and we have seen this recently with our amazing “new state of the art” studio being built. We also love the fact that we have so many giveaways, giving you the chance to win prizes nearly every day. One of the things that people talk to me the most about (apart from the ‘mystery voice’) is our music. Everyone has a different opinion and likes different things - that’s life. Wouldn’t it be a boring life if everyone liked the same thing? Even in the building at Island FM we always have a mixed view on the music. We try and play a mix of music that keeps most generations happy but I know we are never going to please everybody, I just don’t believe that’s possible. The main thing we try and look at is pleasing a family, so the children, Mum and Dad and don’t forget Gran and Grandad. Just over half the Island listens to us and we try and remember all of you. I, Richard and especially Carl have been here for many years, and people have got to know us. I’m sure everyone has their favourite. But we also like to think we have got to know you as well.

#05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

I love the fact that on a morning I can talk to people on a personal level and wake up with people that I haven’t even met asking me how I am. I believe that is one of the things that make Guernsey and Island FM so unique. We know you, we like you and we want you to keep coming back to say Hi! That has shown in our latest audience figures as more people come along to listen, whether it’s to win prizes, listen to the music, catch up on the news, talk to one of your favourite presenters or just to say Hi. So, I want to say thank you. Thank you for making Guernsey a very special place with a very special radio station that I hope will be here to entertain you, and one you want to keep listening to, for many years to come. James.

CAST OFF ON YOUR OWN VOYAGES... Whether your budget runs to a few hundred pounds or a few hundred thousand pounds and beyond, local boat ownership gives access to an incredible nautical playground. Words and Photography Tom Bradshaw

#05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

O

ur island comes into its element in summer in so many ways. One of its strongest recreational assets - the surrounding sea - becomes a hive of activity. With the boating season well and truly underway several islanders may find themselves looking into Guernsey’s marinas with envious eyes. If you’re one of them, why not make this the year you acquire a vessel and embark on some voyages of your own? Many probably write this off as seemingly far too expensive or scary. Of course it can be both, but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t need a 60ft gin palace to enjoy yourself, nor do you have to risk getting stuck out sailing in a gale. Local boat ownership is possible on a modest budget and gives you access to one of the most desirable cruising grounds in Europe. Our Bailiwick archipelago has so many opportunities within reach in just a day on the water, whether under power or sail. With more time a vast French coastline opens up to you.

LIFESTYLE. TRAVEL.

Many will never tire of what we have right on our doorstep. With a coastline of glorious sandy beaches and stunning cliffs, Herm offers visitors from Guernsey a true sense of escapism just three miles from home. Throughout the summer, drying out overnight in its tidal harbour is very popular with boaters as it offers shelter in all but northerly winds. And with a great pub just a stone’s throw away, who could ask for more. For those that don’t wish to take the ground, Rosaire, just south of the harbour, becomes a sheltered basin at low tide. However, it can become quite exposed and has strong currents at high water. Sark, Alderney and Jersey offer numerous possibilities for day trips or extended overnight stays, but only the latter has marina facilities if the weather turns.

Back on Guernsey, the stunning Fermain Bay is an easy two-mile passage south from St Peter Port Harbour. Ashore is the world-renowned Beach Café, and those arriving by sea have no parking issues. A short venture around St Martin’s Point finds Petit Port, Moulin Huet, Saints, Le Jaonnet and Petit Bot bays. Several islanders, especially those keen on fishing, keep boats on the west coast, where there is also lots of fun to be had. With so many opportunities on the nearby French coastline it is worth mentioning a few local favourites. The nearest port is Dielette, some 25 miles east of St Peter Port, which is renowned for it moules frites.

Heading south, the small island of Brehat is the closest point, lying about 40 miles southwest of St Martin’s Point. Just north of Paimpol, this delightful holiday island is a similar size to Sark, but more akin to Herm with is low profile and beaches. In the middle of the island is a quaint village. A short passage west is the Tregiuer estuary and venturing six miles up the winding river finds the cathedral town of the same name. Its inland marina provides complete shelter, making it a popular retreat in storms, but many cruising yachtsmen will choose to include this enjoyable detour upstream regardless of the weather. Arrive on a Wednesday to experience the open-air market which takes over most of the town. Its hilly streets become lined with stalls selling everything from hippy clothing to live poultry and game. Some ten miles west of the river mouth is the rocky natural harbour of Port Blanc, a perfect lunch stop en route to the Ploumanac’h, which lies just five miles further west along the pink granite coastline. Here, a narrow inlet leads into another natural harbour. Once inside the picturesque fishing port there is a rather challenging fore and aft mooring arrangement, but it is well worth the effort. Ashore you can enjoy coastal strolls among the impossibly stacked granite boulders, a choice of three lovely beaches and some excellent cuisine. The neighbouring town of Tregestal is also only a short walk or dinghy ride away. Three miles north of Ploumanac’h are Les Sept Isles where many pleasure boats will

spend a few hours at anchor waiting for favourable tide to make the return voyage to Guernsey. If all this floats your boat, why not make this year the year you buy one and enjoy the freedom to explore the glorious Bailiwick waters?

are taught locally. Our nautical playground comes with several hidden hazards. Rocky coastlines and waterways coupled with one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world make Bailiwick pilotage particularly challenging. However, so long as you don’t underestimate the dangers, you will enjoy safe passage.

When deciding what type of boat is right for you, start by narrowing down key elements. Do you want to sail or cruise under power? The latter is the easier route as there are less skills to learn. What will you use your boat for? How often will that be? Who will be onboard? Will you have somewhere to moor it? And what is your budget? Buying second-hand is a more affordable way to procure a boat of any size and there is a thriving market for used boats locally, both privately and through several established brokers. Some, however will always prefer to buy new. Whether your budget stretches to a few hundred pounds or several hundred thousand, the only prerequisite is that you take this project seriously. Buying a boat forms part of an ongoing investment – insurance, safety equipment, fuel, mooring costs and upkeep must also be factored in. But most importantly is competence and anyone new to boating must learn a comprehensive range of seamanship skills. Is it best to sweat it out or rest when illness strikes? The neck test is a good way to measure what exercise you should or shouldn’t be doing whilst poorly. If you have an illness with no fever that’s above the neck, including a sore throat and nasal congestion, then it’s ok to continue with mild to moderated exercise like yoga and pilates. If you have an ear infection your balance will be off centre making you feel unsteady, if your feeling dizzy then this is a good indicator for you to stop doing whatever your doing. If your illness is below the neck, think achy joints, coughing or fatigue then it’s best to rest and never exercise with a fever, you’ll risk raising your internal body temperature, which could prolong your recovery and make you feel worse. When it comes to rest, expect to be out of action for 7days with the common cold, whereas flu can linger and if it develops into something more severe like bronchitis expect to be out of action for 2 weeks.

SMART TALK IS THE GALAXY S7 EDGE SAMSUNG’S BEST PHONE EVER? AIRTEL - VODAFONE’S MARKETING OFFICER, FAITH JOYCE REVIEWS THE LATEST ADITION TO THE SAMSUNG FAMILY. IN A WORD

YES!

The Galaxy S7 Edge has been hailed by critics as the best smartphone in the world right now, and it certainly lives up to the hype. An upgrade from last years’ Galaxy S6, the S7 Edge is jam-packed with innovative features I didn’t even know I needed, until now. The beautiful curved design makes it really comfortable to hold, and the 5.5 inch quad-HD display is incredibly vivid and sharp. With built-in Android 6.0 and 4GB of RAM this phone is fast - and even better, there is a microSD card slot for all your expandable storage needs. One of my favourite improvements on this handset is the 12MP camera which is great in all conditions, especially in low light. It’s also super quick – just a quick double tap on the home button opens the camera with almost instant focus on my target. But what about selfies? Well, I’m no selfie queen, but the 5MP front-facing camera is very impressive. The Galaxy S7 Edge uses a screen flash to illuminate your face, similar to the iPhone 6S, but the picture quality is far better.

Sarnia Estate Agents have a combined 41 years of experience in property with an unsurpassed reputation for professionalism and expertise. They offer a very wide selection of property in Guernsey with proactive staff excelling in sales, lettings and property management.

Oracle is a highly experienced group of professional advisers based in Guernsey, who provide effective financial solutions and insurance products with an emphasis on personal service and long-standing relationships. In a sea of financial and insurance providers, Oracle is a strong, independent partner and they aim to look after your best interests over the long term. Their advice is clear, jargon-free and tailored to your individual circumstances.

Obviously one of the prime advantages of staying put and extending is the saving on the fees for moving which can be considerable – and will go a fair way towards any extension cost. Allied with that is the ability to ‘fine tune’ the decoration and finishes to their own particular tastes and specify any particular requirements with regard to services etc. On the other hand we often see home owners who over develop an existing house, which may well mean that whilst they increase the size of the accommodation they reduce the parking/garden so that the house becomes ‘unbalanced’. An example would be where a family requires an increase in bedrooms for growing children. It may be that to add two bedrooms the parking reduces from four cars to two. The property would then have family friendly bedrooms but as the children grow there will not be enough parking/amenity space and a future prospective purchaser may consider that the lack of parking precludes them from purchase. In that instance it would be better for the home owners to save their money and buy an larger house on a larger site.

Mourant Ozannes’ highly skilled and experienced Guernsey property law team is focused on providing expert residential and commercial property advice and a truly personal service. Combining an enviable speed of response with technical expertise, Mourant Ozannes work tirelessly on your behalf and keep you fully informed at every stage of your transaction.

Dunnell Robertson Partnership Ltd was established in May 1997 by Drew Robertson and Andrew Dunnell to bring together their experience in the fields of Architecture and Building Surveying. The practice has a combined total of over 100 years of involvement in the Guernsey construction industry. They look to add value to every project as appropriate with their architectural and surveying skills, allowing them to be ‘innovative, creative, fluent and often bold.’

It’s always worth getting advice and most local estate agents will be happy to give some basic advice as to whether the property will benefit from enlargement or whether it would be better to move.

and sandstone. The yellow limestone is a beautiful paving with soft, subtle warm hues. Sandstone is a timeless product & their most economical paving solution that offers traditional style & elegant looks. Brick - whether new or reclaimed - lends itself to versatile designs, either over large areas, to edge stone or gravel or for an enticing, winding path. Similarly, but demanding a substantial budget - granite setts can be used to create a stunning driveway, patio or path and lend themselves particularly well to spiral and concentric circular patterns. Happily, reconstituted stone and good-looking concrete setts are available for a more modest outlay; these are joined by wires, laid on mortar and pointed. Another way of keeping the cost down is to use setts in a small area only, as a focal point, and the same can be said of mosaics and glass bricks too.

SOLID FOUNDATIONS I

f you want to make the most of your outdoor space, however compact (or expansive) it is, you will need to consider the use of hard landscaping. Planned and chosen well, it will form the backbone of your area, will weather well and will complement your planting landscape; the opposite is also sadly true, and nobody wants an expensive, ugly mistake! Whether you are re-thinking your front garden, driveway or back garden, there are a myriad of options now available to you - the only limit is your own creativity. The ‘best’ hard landscaping materials

Your choice of product will depend on your budget, the effect you wish to create, the amount of traffic in the area and environmental considerations. The materials you choose should reflect and complement those used on your house. The purist would probably always say that natural York stone is unbeatable - the legendary ‘real deal’, hewn for millennia from the Pennines, it’s a surface which ages beautifully and softens with time… But it’s expensive. As is the extremely desirable, pale and contemporary Portland stone (limestone used since Roman times), which

#05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

There are, of course, a huge variety of concrete slabs now available which are designed to imitate natural stone at a fraction of the cost. However concrete is not just a cheap alternative - as a smooth surface it can be used to stunning effect in a modern garden.

would look fabulous next to a cuttingedge home. Locally, granite is - unsurprisingly - the most popular choice for paving & not as expensive as you’d think. It’s non-slip, easy to maintain as it doesn’t necessarily need to be sealed and is available in a number of colours to complement your home. It’s also extremely hardwearing and its flat surface lends itself well to patio furniture and clean architectural lines. Local stone and concrete paving suppliers and experts, Capelles Building Stores also sell a lot of tumbled limestone

Gravel is a relatively cheap and quick material to use. It’s quite quick to spread and is best put over a permeable membrane in order to control weeds. It also drains easily. A minor downside is that it will need topping up every few years. You could also consider using pebbles or cobbles set into mortar. For front gardens there are now resin-bonded gravels and granites available that are set in recycled plastic. Plastics and rubber are being used increasingly in garden design; artificial turf is one product that has become a whole lot more desirable in recent years, and not just for the ‘child-friendly’ garden either. If you are incorporating a play area into your scheme, however, then you could consider using textured or patterned rubber or ‘playground tarmac’ made of plastic chippings.

Maximise your space… Minimise your impact If your outdoor space is limited, then there are some clever tricks you can employ to enhance it. Try taking paving to the full width of the garden. If you have a neat, rectangular patch, then lead the eye with your landscaping; use diagonals, unusual angles and asymmetry, or wind a path through the ‘rooms’ in your garden to make it more interesting. This could be made of traditional brick, or of recycled crushed materials such as chipped bark, shells or recycled aggregates. Be careful however not to over-pave your area. It’s really important to maintain some soft landscaping too - shockingly London has lost the equivalent of 5,200 football pitches by paving over front gardens and in the north of England a quarter of gardens are paved. In the UK, three times as many front gardens are now paved over compared to ten years ago*. The increased use of nonpermeable materials has led to run-off and flash-flooding as well and is also detrimental to wildlife. Thankfully there are sustainable and friendlier ‘permeable’ options available to us. Modern brick pavers are designed to interlock, meaning that rainwater can penetrate the tiny gaps between them. Matrix pavers (also known as cellular paving) are made of recycled plastic and are filled with the aggregate of your choice; or why not try reinforced grass? Paving can be set in sand instead of mortar and you can also consider using mixes using recycled aggregate instead of cement. Naturally, any conventional block or slab paving should always be sloped so that water runs off onto the garden. So why not get inspired & create a garden or driveway this summer that will be the envy of all your friends & neighbours. *Source: RHS Greening Great Britain Report 2015 Words Katie Whitford

Wonderland White Stuff located on Le Pollet, St Peter Port is a stripped back, relaxed boutique clothing store that’s small enough to just feel cosy but not too big that your shopping experience becomes overwhelming. The pet and child friendly environment allows parents to take their time while sifting through the clothing rails. The store is dedicated to providing a comfortable retail setting and their recent addition of an Alice in Wonderland play area for kids has put a smile on the faces of their Guernsey clientele.

#05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

The play area was the brainchild of the White Stuff employees who are used to children being brought in by their parents looking for something to do. The former storeroom was transformed into a snug kids spot by White Stuff creative employee Olga Frunze. The room adds to the quintessential feel and décor of the four-year-old Guernsey shop. Olga chose the timeless, vintage children’s classic Alice in Wonderland to be the overarching theme for the distinctive designs that decorate the three walls. Inside the room kids can stay busy with colouring books, fairy

A HAPPY FUTURE

FOR GUERNSEY GSY Life hears from our new President of Policy and Resource on what the next future holds for our island. We’re quite excited about it and read on to find out why you should be too!

N

ot too long ago, I gave a talk to the Institute of Directors. I suggested Guernsey should have a goal, a simple and compelling one: to be the happiest and healthiest community in the world by 2026. A community where no-one get left behind, with a secure, successful and stable economy. Some people had told me that business would not be interested in a goal like that. Not true. The businesspeople in our community who I speak to and meet with – from major international finance houses through to home-run micro-businesses – absolutely support such a goal. In fact, many of them want to help us to deliver it. Working with business and the third sector, our shared aim is to make Guernsey a place where people aspire to live, prosper and raise their families. Where people want to start a business and contribute to their community. Where islanders with bright ideas have access to support for new businesses and community initiatives that contribute to a vibrant and diversified economy. Is this pie in the sky? No. It’s certainly achievable – it’s only 20 years ago that the New York Times named Guernsey as the happiest place in earth. It’s also measurable. There are rafts of indices and KPIs to track our progress to that goal – for example the Demos-PwC Good Growth Index, the Genuine Progress Indicator, the Social Progress Index that emerged from the World Economic Forum’s work, and the OECD Better Life Index. This is a virtuous circle. A happy and healthy society removes some of the pressure on public finances, making them more sustainable. Economic competitiveness and sustainable public finances go hand in hand. A successful economy is the bedrock of a community built on opportunity, inclusion and fairness, and these are the foundations of a happy and healthy society. So maintaining a secure, successful and

#05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

Words Gavin St Pier stable economy is vital. And it will be a challenge. However we can afford to be confident – indeed, we should be. But we cannot afford to be complacent. We will stick to our fiscal rules. We will invest in our island’s infrastructure over the next four years, using money that has been put aside to do that. We will use the economic development fund we put in place during the last term to support growth and entrepreneurship. Deputy Peter Ferbrache will be a forwardthinking, energetic and can-do leader of our island’s Office for Economic Development. We will also seek to make the most of our assets. We will manage our trading entities and our property portfolio to make sure our community is getting the best possible services and the best possible returns – and I am pleased that Deputy Dave Jones, as the first President of the States Trading Supervisory Board, is committed to these outcomes. The global environment is not favourable for tax havens. That is fine with us. Guernsey is not a tax haven. We support a level playing field across the globe, with fair access to markets and effective proportionate regulation. We support the development of truly international standards on tax transparency and beneficial ownership, which are consistently and objectively applied. There is not a global standard that Guernsey does not meet. Our recent Council of Europe Moneyval evaluation showed we had the highest standards of probity in relation to fighting corruption and financial crime. The OECD described us as one of the most transparent jurisdictions in practice in the world. We continue to meet the highest standards of data protection and are enhancing our cyber-security. We have financial stability, and rather than standing still we are putting in place an independent financial stability committee #05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

to ensure that we retain that stability. Guernsey is not offshore, it is mid-shore. We are not a tax haven, we are a safe haven. We know that and you know that. But sometimes others choose to ignore that inconvenient truth. So we will continue to argue our case robustly. That Guernsey is a hub that provides investment into the UK and European economy. Indeed we will welcome the opportunity to continue to engage with the European Commission in order to demonstrate that our tax system is fair and compliant as well as competitive when their assessment of ‘third country’ jurisdictions begins. Whether the UK decides to BREXIT or not, we will have a plan in place to ensure stability. Our stability and security is the driver of our economic success, now and in the future. We will do all we can to preserve this. And that means not changing our corporate tax system and not introducing a goods and services tax. Instead, we will live within our means. Living within our means will not inhibit our ambition. It will empower us, as we will seek to do things differently – working with business, the charity and NGO sectors. We will not be short on ambition. But we know – and will not forget – that making that ambition real depends on a strong economy. So that is a goal. A happy and healthy community, where no-one gets left behind, with a secure successful and stable economy. We can achieve this through putting it at the heart of our government plan, which will be devised through the summer of 2016. I hope that you all will continue to work with us in partnership to deliver that plan.

SAFFERY CHAMPNESS AUDIT MANAGER LISTED IN TOP 35 UNDER 35 A local audit manager from Saffery Champness has been recognised by Accountancy Age magazine as part of its ‘Top 35 Under 35’ listing. Lindsey Dean has been named in the fifth annual list which highlights some of the best and brightest accounting practice talent across the UK and Channel Islands.

MOURANT OZANNES DOUBLES COUNSEL FIREPOWER Leading offshore law firm, Mourant Ozannes, has announced an unprecedented number of promotions to Counsel across its Guernsey and Jersey offices. A total of nine lawyers from across the firm’s Channel Island offices have been appointed as Counsel in the global promotion round, more than doubling the total number of lawyers in this role. Jonathan Rigby, Mourant Ozannes Global Managing Partner, said: “These promotions come at a key stage in our ambitious growth strategy. Not only do they send a strong signal to the market in terms of our growth and capability, they also demonstrate our commitment to recruiting and developing the best lawyers in their field.” “The large number of promotions this year reflects some key developments we’ve made to the Counsel role at Mourant Ozannes. The role here is distinct from other firms because it is dynamic and allows for flexibility of career progression. I’m very much looking forward to continuing to work with these individuals as they develop. Congratulations to all concerned.”

Mrs Dean began her career with Saffery Champness in 2001 on a placement year while studying for her degree in Accounting and Finance at Brighton University. Following the completion of her degree she joined the firm as an audit trainee, qualifying as a chartered accountant and working her way up to her current position as manager. She is also president of the Guernsey Young Business Group which comprises of 130 members, 12 council members and six board members. Nick Batiste, Saffery Champness managing director, is pleased to see the continual recognition of staff within the company. “Lindsey is a highly valued member of the team who always ensures that her clients’ needs and expectations are met and exceeded. Her place on this list is a well-deserved reward and shows that commitment and hard work is recognised within the industry.” Jeremy Ellis, Saffery Champness audit partner, said: “Lindsey has played a key role in helping to grow the business. In addition to being an integral part of the management team of a department of nine, she has responsibility for the mentoring scheme across the firm.

Invest with Bob The investment world is often likened to a journey within the industry and when you drill down on the similarities between the two it is easy to understand why this analogy is so fitting. Anybody who has spent more than 5 minutes engaging with a returning gap-year student will know just how influential a voyage can be - with many describing the experience as life changing. However, as fascinating as it can be to hear about these stories of adventure, they actually have very little emotional impact on the listener – we only really become emotionally attached to experiences we have personally participated in. The same can be said for investments. Every day the markets ebb and flow and seemingly have minimal grasp over the uninvested – as an “outsider” you don’t experience the same psychological effect as those already taking part. Once invested emotional attachment drastically increases bringing what was previously dismissed as background chatter firmly into the foreground. In itself this is not an issue – in fact, many would argue that having a more vested interest in the world that we share is only a good thing – however, a common occurrence often associated with increased emotion is for logic and rationale to decline. This effect can scar investors leading them to make poor investment decisions, which will eventually damage their wealth. Human nature inherently causes us to seek out the maximum level of return. However, as with voyages, different styles of investments will appeal to different people. The difference here is that with holidays, people tend to respect their limitations – experience tells us we are more reluctant to do so when it comes to investments. Some of you may know my colleague Mark. Despite at times proclaiming to be the next Kelly Slater, Mark accepts that his surfing ability prevents him from attempting to tackle the 30ft waves seen in havens like Hawaii. Whilst the thrill of completing such a challenge certainly seems appealing, I would hope that Mark recognises doing so would leave him with many broken bones and incapable of completing the remainder of his journey.

BOB TANNAHILL, Ravenscroft Investment Management Instead, he limits himself to chasing the dizzy heights of the waves present at world-renowned surf spot “Vazon Bay” (rarely standing he hastens to add). Whilst the extent of the glory may not be the same, the ability to escape hospitalization and continue on his path of gentle progression is a compromise he favours. Chasing higher investment returns can result in worse outcomes for us as investors than if we better recognised our personal dispositions. As an investor the last situation you want to find yourself in is a position where you go through the pain of riding the market down, only to lose your nerve at the bottom, cash out and fail to benefit from assets as they rally. Just like surfing, it is important to match the rewards you are seeking with the level of risk you can comfortably tolerate. This ability will help shield you from crystallising losses and enable you to continue on your investment journey. It may prevent you from experiencing the adrenaline associated with the racier assets but, in the words of Mr. Probz, it will enable you to keep slowly drifting, wave after wave, wave after wave towards your ultimate investment goal.

Human nature inherently causes us to seek out the maximum level of return. However, as with voyages, different styles of investments will appeal to different people.

If you want to discuss investing with Ravenscroft Investment Management, then please feel free to call a member of our team on 732769.

RELAY TEAMS ENCOURAGED TO SIGN-UP FOR SAFFERY ROTARY WALK Organisers of the Saffery Rotary Walk are encouraging groups to form a relay team and participate in this year’s around the island walk. For the very first time in the walk’s history the event’s committee is appealing to local companies and organisations to enter as part of a group that can split the 39-mile challenge into a number of individual stages. Each team taking part in the only aroundthe-island-walk can have a minimum of four and maximum of seven people. The registration fee is £140 per team. The walk is divided by seven checkpoints and to make sure the whole walk is covered from start to finish team members must, between them, cover all distances between these checkpoints. Walkers will be able to check in and out at each checkpoint with their team identification card. There will be a special prize for the relay team who raises the most money at the awards presentation in September. Chair of the Saffery Rotary Walk, Simon Milsted, said: “This is the first year that we have put in place a specific relay option for walkers. “The walk is a huge challenge and some people may not be able to take this on in its entirety due to various physical constraints or personal commitments. You need to have the time to train to be physically prepared for the 39 mile walk, half of which is around the challenging east and south coast of the island. “While we have a lot of walkers who do brave the full course, taking part as a relay team is a great way to get involved with friends or work mates and raise money for worthy charitable causes.” The organisers are encouraging corporate teams to appeal to their employers

Following his time with Indulge Mr Wood worked for two UK based digital agencies and lectured at the University of Winchester. He has worked on campaigns for high profile clients such as Elsevier, M&G Investments, Deloitte, Miele and Philips. to match funds raised by the team, effectively doubling the final donation. Local firm, CT Plus, is gearing up for the walk and has got together a team to take on the challenge. Marketing and PR officer for CT Plus, Jon Ozanne, said: “All our drivers taking part are very familiar with the Saffery Rotary Walk thanks to the 91 and 92 round island bus route. A key part of our training will be taking on Guernsey’s south coast cliffs which we will be tackling together over the next few weekends.” Participants can register for the Saffery Rotary Walk, sponsored by Saffery Champness, through the event’s website: www.safferyrotarywalk.com via the online sign-up and fundraising platform Race Nation, which also enables people to donate through a secure online server. Walkers will complete the challenge in aid of 18 local charities and not-for-profit organisations, all of which operate in Guernsey and the Bailiwick.

FIRST EDITION OF TRANSLATION OF SHAKESPEARE’S WORK INTO FRENCH TO BE RESTORED A first edition of the complete works of Shakespeare in French, which was translated by Victor Hugo’s son, is to be restored following a donation to the Priaulx Library. The book, together with an entire year’s editions of The Comet, which was one of the island’s popular newspapers in the 1860s, will be sent away to specialists in the UK and paid for using money from Ravenscroft, which has been supporting the library since 2013. ‘We have books that are hundreds of years old but we’re a library and not a museum and so we want islanders to be able to use them. That does mean that damage can occur and fragile pages and bindings need restoring. That is a specialised job which is undertaken in the UK and so comes at a considerable cost,’ said chief librarian Amanda Bennett. ‘We do allocate budget each year to maintain and restore the valuable books and papers and the Friends of Priaulx Library also help fund this but we simply don’t have the funds to do everything. Larger pieces such as Francois-Victor’s translation of Shakespeare and The Comet can only really be done when we receive donations, such as this one from Ravenscroft, or bequests.’ The items are sent to a specialist company in Nottingham who deacidify the paper and then restore any holes using Japanese tissue before a binding is added to keep them together. Ms Bennett said the first edition of Francois-Victor’s translation had belonged to one of Victor Hugo’s friends and so it was fitting that in the year of celebration they were able to preserve an important part of the family’s history. The Comet, which was written in English, contained local and international news and past issues are used a lot. ‘They contained family notices and so are essential for anyone researching their family tree. We’ve also recently had someone who wanted to record the history of boat pilots using the harbours and they had spent hours poring over past issues finding little pieces of information. That’s the very reason the Priaulx Library exists and we want more people to use it but that does mean we need to carry out more and more restoration and preservation,’ she said.

Ravenscroft has supported the Priaulx Library for the past three years by sponsoring a photographic exhibition in the gardens which is on display for two months over the summer. ‘There is so much history within the Priaulx Library and many of us simply don’t appreciate the wonders that can be found inside. The island’s life story can be found inside and so it’s so important that as a community we do what we can to ensure that is preserved,’ said Katy Sandrey, group head of marketing & PR at Ravenscroft. ‘Last year’s exhibition, which captured the changing face of the island’s retail sector, attracted 7,000 people and we hope this year’s theme, once it has been decided, will be just as popular.’ Entry to the Priaulx Library is free and it is open from 9.30am until 5pm Monday to Friday

The awards ceremony, which took place last Thursday (12 May) at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, London, saw the firm win this prestigious award from a shortlist of four global trust companies. Now in its 11th year, the Citywealth Magic Circle Awards, organised by the UK-based publisher of wealth-management industry news and directories, brings together a top level group of elite advisers and managers in the international wealth industry. This year’s event attracted more than 400 attendees representing over 140

organisations including the leading law firms, trust companies, family offices, tax advisors, investment managers and bankers in the wealth sector to recognise the achievements of the industry during the past year. Entries for each category were shortlisted by a judging panel featuring 10 global industry experts. The winners were then chosen by a panel of judges who make up 90% of the vote with the remaining 10% from online voting. Saffery Champness, one of the largest independent fiduciary service providers in Guernsey, employs more than 125 people across its trust, funds, tax and accountancy businesses, with its fiduciary team specialising in the provision of services to an international client base. Also operating in Switzerland, the firm’s Geneva office, which opened in 2008, employs 20 staff, offering a full range of global wealth protection and preservation structures. Director of Saffery Champness Lisa Vizia, who was at the awards evening, was overwhelmed by the firm’s success. “Being shortlisted, let alone winning, is a testament to the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of our team in Guernsey,” she said. “We would like to take the opportunity to thank Karen Jones and her team at Citywealth, the judging panel and all those businesses and individuals who voted for us. It is a tremendous achievement for which we are extremely proud.”

Opting for local; a refreshing change from big business.

We usually choose to do business where we recognise the best value for our time and money, more often than not the lure of the high street is all too inviting. The familiar shop fronts beckon and we find ourselves being drawn to what has become accustom. However, in settling for the big names, it’s easy to miss out on what else the Guernsey shopping scene has to offer. Independent retailers’ stores provide a one-of-a-kind distinctive character and a much-needed change from the ordinary. Supporting small businesses and buying locally helps to sustain our vibrant island community in a marketplace that is slowly becoming more saturated with big brand names. Pounds spent at community-based merchants create a multiplier in the local economy and reawakens a sense in the value people find in home-grown self reliance. The success of such community based businesses bodes well for the strong localisation movement present in Guernsey. Backing small business not only boosts the island’s economy but allows for a far more personalised shopping experience. We get to meet the people behind the product and are much less likely to bump into someone fashioning the exact same item. #05. JUNE 2016. THE VOYAGE ISSUE.

So, when shopping in Guernsey consider an alternative to the high street. Head to North Quay, part of the island spotted with independent businesses from a unique blend of coffee shops, gem-packed boutiques and delicatessens. Instead of the high street get your shopping fix at No.4 located in North Quay, St Peter Port. No.4 can only be described as a locally owned little treasure-trove, specialising in current clothing, homeware and jewellery. Owned by Nicky Heaume, the shop recently opened in the first week of April this year. While it’s small in size compared to some of the more familiar shops on the high street, if you’re looking for something a bit different Nicky is ready to lend a helping hand. The stylish and distinctive Guernsey designs on offer at No.4 will ensure your living room doesn’t look like a page from a catalogue. Nicky is able to sift through other competing goods and find those most appealing to her customers. What’s for sale inside No.4 is just as lovely as the harbour views observable from inside the relaxed and cosy compact store. Nicky is dedicated to putting Guernsey on the map with a lot of her customers coming directly from the cruise ships that dock in the harbour, with tourists ready to purchase a few Guernsey mementos. If you happen to be on the lookout for the perfect gift for a friend or family member Nicky suggests one of her silky scarfs or a beautifully designed men’s cufflinks. Full of trinkets and quirky gifts it is impossible to visit this charming shop and not leave with a little something.

Detect, defend and protect your data and assets THOUSANDS OF STEPS RAISE THOUSANDS OF POUNDS! This year’s World Aid Walk has raised £40,000!! More than a thousand people took part in the 46th walk with routes around Guernsey and Herm. The turnout was the best since 2010 much to the delight of chair of the organising committee Bella Farrell. ‘It was an amazing day and we are delighted with the response. To have such a great turnout with over 900 in Guernsey and more than 100 in Herm is incredible and has helped us raise £40,000 already with more sponsorship money to come in,’ she said. The Overseas Aid & Development Commission pledged to match what was raised by walkers. ‘All of the charities are working with people living in some of the poorest regions in the world and are committed to providing support that enables communities to become more independent and self-sufficient. It’s humbling to know that so many people in Guernsey are prepared to take part in the World Aid Walk to help people they will never meet,’ she said. ‘I want to thank everyone who was involved. We have a fantastic team of

volunteers, without whom we couldn’t continue organising it, our sponsors Standard Chartered not only funded us financially but entered a team of walkers and provided volunteers, we had support from the parishes, the media, the emergency services and of course importantly we need to thank the walkers.’ Trevor Kelham, CEO of Standard Chartered Trust (Guernsey) Limited, said it was a great atmosphere.

‘Standard Chartered wanted to be an active sponsor and get involved in every aspect of the event. Seeing hundreds of islanders of all ages in Market Square raring to go was really impressive and everyone’s efforts will make a difference to people who don’t have access to food, water, basic housing and professional medical care,’ he said. ‘For Standard Chartered’s own charity Seeing is Believing, the money raised will be invaluable in helping prevent, treat and cure blindness across the world.’ ‘For Standard Chartered’s own charity Seeing is Believing to be included in the list of beneficiaries is something we are grateful to the organisers for allowing and we know the money will help prevent, treat and cure blindness across the world.’

TAKE A TRIP INTO

Wonderland White Stuff located on Le Pollet, St Peter Port is a stripped back, relaxed boutique clothing store that’s small enough to just feel cosy but not too big that your shopping experience becomes overwhelming. The pet and child friendly environment allows parents to take their time while sifting through the clothing rails. The store is dedicated to providing a comfortable retail setting and their recent addition of an Alice in Wonderland play area for kids has put a smile on the faces of their Guernsey clientele.

POSITIVE RESPONSE TO MANAGER LED PRODUCT LAUNCH AT GUERNSEY FUNDS FORM Guernsey’s new Manager Led Product (MLP) was warmly received by a London funds audience when it was launched at the Guernsey Funds Forum last week [12 May]. Nearly 500 delegates attended the annual funds conference, which this year saw Luke Johnson, Chairman of private equity house Risk Capital Partners and former Chairman of Channel 4 Television, appear as keynote speaker. The event, entitled ‘The new scope – investor perspectives, innovation and success’, was moderated by ITV News anchor Alastair Stewart OBE, and took place at etc. venues, 155 Bishopsgate, London. Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley said the annual showcase was the perfect setting to announce the immediate launch of the MLP, which aims to ensure a proportionate risk-based level of product regulation for any Alternative Investment Fund Manager (AIFM) that establishes itself in Guernsey and seeks to market into Europe under the National Private Placement Regime arrangements. In his introduction, Mr Wheatley told the audience that the MLP would place the regulations on the AIFM only. “We see the MLP as offering a very attractive vehicle for managers needing substance in the Island, an area in which we expect to grow. Once an AIFMD has been licensed by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, they will then be

able to launch new partnership structures and corporate funds by simple notification,” said Mr Wheatley.

“Capital will be concentrated at the AIFM level. This will facilitate the quick and efficient launch of new funds with a minimum requirement for red tape but with no diminution of the quality of regulatory oversight.” In addition to Mr Johnson’s keynote speech, the event included two panel sessions. The first looked at innovation in the funds arena and the second focussed on investor perspectives including a focus on environment, social and governance investment and whether the depositary should be seen as a ‘value-add’ or a burden. Speakers were Kate Simpson from Proskauer, Tim Hughes from PwC, Robin Klein from Localglobe, Blaise Duault from PAI Partners, Bernard Vogel from Endeavour Vision, Phillip Hyett from Funding Circle, Adam Black from Coller Capital, Aaron Stocks from Travers Smith and Duncan MacPherson from Starwood Capital Europe. Mr Wheatley said the calibre of the speakers and the content of the panel sessions, in addition to Mr Johnson’s keynote speech, had all contributed to a successful event. “As a whole, the event demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the Guernsey funds sector which in turn reflects the Island’s continued relevance in the international funds industry. It was very encouraging to hear from a number of panellists about how Guernsey continues to evolve its offering and is therefore able to ensure it meets industry needs. It was also pleasing to hear Luke’s detailed explanation on the economic benefits of private equity, which reaffirms our belief that private equity is a force for good in the economies into which Guernsey funds invest.” Among the delegates was Jim James, Chief Executive of Insolvency Ventures, who said he appreciated the content of the panel sessions.

Were you caught on camera at the JT-Cobo Balcony gig? Pick your face out of the crowd!

“I found it very interesting because it looked at the bigger picture issues, such as technology disintermediation and transparency, rather than the minutiae. I spend a lot of time in Guernsey because I think there’s a lot of potential there and I came to the Funds Forum to meet more Guernsey people,” said Mr James. John Munro of Trident Capital Asset Management was similarly impressed by the event. “The nature and construction of the offerings to the funds industry was extremely well represented and very informative. We are looking at the structuring and origination of a debt fund and all the players were here,” said Mr Munro. Guernsey Finance Chairman Lyndon Trott added: “I can’t recall seeing such a high number of quality delegates at an event of this nature. The Guernsey Funds Forum is an exceptional networking opportunity for all involved in the funds space and grows in status every year.”
