MEET SOME OF THE GUESTS STAYING AT THE GSPCA.. It’s not just cats and dogs....

With over 143 years helping animals in Guernsey the GSPCA is the oldest and largest animal welfare organisation in the Bailiwick of Guernsey and every day is a challenge never knowing what we will be called upon to help. In the last few weeks we have rescued a Loggerhead Turtle the first ever in Guernsey, a grey seal pup, dozens of hedgehogs, oiled seabirds, stray cats, fish, a bearded dragon, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs and many others with over 300 in our care. As Spring fast approaches many of our wild animals will be thinking of reproducing meaning a flourish of life and an increased work load for animal rescues like ourselves. This means we all need to be on our toes as well helping to support them where we can as they bring up their young from providing wild bird feed for the garden birds to hedgehog food for our spikey friends. Many of these young animals especially young birds can find themselves at risk with hundreds of thousands killed or affected by cats and other predators every year.

lots of toys and things to do at home can take up some of their time, but sadly this isn’t full proof. If you find a young baby bird and can easily put it back in the nest or place of safety such as an ice cream tub with kitchen towel up high and monitor it to see if the parents will return is always best for the family as the parents can bring up their young naturally and teach them to feed in the wild and avoid predators. If this is not possible or the young bird is injured then the GSPCA is here to help. We operate 24/7 and there is always someone on site at the Shelter, in an ambulance or at the end of the emergency line on 257261. If you do find a young bird you do need to call us or get it to the Shelter as quickly as possible. To transport it, depending on the size using a handkerchief, scarf or something similar, if they are quite large maybe a blanket or towel. To reduce their stress if you can place them wrapped into a dark box with holes and get them to the GSPCA as soon as possible where we have intensive care units set up and ready for birds of any age and any species.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons offers a regulatory function for veterinary surgeries, which means that pet owners can be assured that their veterinary surgeon and veterinary nurses are properly qualified and fit to practice. The Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK. Through setting standards and regular inspections, the PSS promotes and helps us to maintain the highest standards of veterinary care, and in doing so, gives you the client, peace of mind in the knowledge that we meet these standards. To become accredited, we go through a rigorous inspection process every four years and can also be subject to spot-tests in between inspections. It includes 10 new classrooms, a learning support room, dedicated music centre, new refectory and library which will all be ready by September 2016. The dedicated music space is set to be used by Melrose and Senior students and will include sound-proofed practice rooms that double up as a recording studio. A link to the school hall will also create a “green room”, to support performances which take place on stage.

LE MONT SAINT GARAGE DONATE TWO CARS TO ST JOHN COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS Le Mont Saint Garage has sponsored two vehicles which will be used by St John Community First Responders (CFR). The Fiat 500 Abarth cars will be used by the volunteers in their daily life over the next 12 months and each vehicle will carry a defibrillator (AED) and other life-saving equipment. The cars, which have been branded with CFR for maximum awareness, are small with good performance making them ideal for the island’s roads. The CFR scheme, which St John set up in 2012, sees volunteers in the community make themselves available to be dispatched by the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre (JESCC) to attend a potentially life-threatening emergency. CFRs are alerted to an emergency call at the same time as an ambulance is deployed and because they are already out in the community they can be the first person to reach the patient, sometimes making a difference between life and death. Deputy chief officer of St John Emergency Ambulance Service, Alison Marquis said; “Le Mont Saint Garage’s donation is

need immediate medical help. We hope these vehicles help the St John volunteers provide lifesaving care and support.” In Guernsey last year 260 patients benefitted from CFR responses. Research shows that cardiac arrest victim’s chances of survival decrease by 10% for every minute without defibrillation. A sequence of four events, known as the ‘Chain of Survival’; early access (activating the emergency services), early basic life support with cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), early defibrillation (an electric shock to the heart) and early advanced care in the form of paramedic intervention significantly increases the possibility of survival. CFR’s are crucial to the second and third link of this chain.

THE LADIES’ COLLEGE HITS £1 MILLION FUNDRAISING MILESTONE In just 10 months The Ladies’ College fundraising committee has raised £1 million as part of the school’s expansion; “A Gift for Learning” Phase 3. The College needs to raise £2 million towards the Phase 3 building, which will cost £7.5 million in total. The principal of The Ladies’ College, Ashley Clancy said; “We are incredibly #03. SAFFERY CHAMPNESS DONATES MONEY FROM CSR AWARD Saffery Champness has donated the £2,000 from its Guernsey Community Awards win to the Guernsey Cheshire Home. The firm won the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award, sponsored by RBC Wealth Management, at the Guernsey Community Awards, organised by the Guernsey Community Foundation, last November recognising the firm’s involvement with charitable and community projects across the island. As part of the award, Saffery Champness received a cheque for £2,000 to be donated to the charity or community project of its choice. The firm consulted its staff for suggestions of potential recipients of the funding. After drawing up a shortlist, it was decided that the money would go to the Guernsey Cheshire Home, as suggested by staff members Sarah Smith and Margaret Pearson. Sadie Siviter de Paucar, development manager for the Guernsey Community Foundation, said: “Asking its staff where the money should be donated is the embodiment of why Saffery Champness won the CSR award. It’s refreshing to see a firm engage its staff in the CSR decision making process, reflecting the views of the whole company.” Lisa Vizia, director of Saffery Champness, said: “Our award win was

down to the hard work and commitment of our staff so it made sense to ask them where they wanted the money to go. “We had a lot of suggestions however both Sarah and Margaret put up a great case for Guernsey Cheshire Home and the fantastic work it does in our community so we thought it was the most appropriate.” The funding will be split proportionality on new laundry equipment and outings for the home’s residents. Nic Mountain, manager at the Guernsey Cheshire Home, said: “The home couldn’t operate without the continued support of the people of Guernsey which enables us to provide the best possible care for residents and day visitors. “We are very grateful to the staff of Saffery Champness for choosing us and it was particularly good timing following the break-down of our washing machine and tumble dryers with the remaining funds going towards activities for our residents.” The Community Awards are held annually to celebrate the island’s voluntary and charitable sector. The judges were particularly impressed with the firm’s sponsorship and support of the Saffery Rotary Walk and its partnership with local cancer charity, CLIC Sargent Guernsey. Saffery Champness took over the sponsorship of the Rotary Walk two years ago and has helped the walk raise close to £82,000 for 20 local charities and organisations. Rather than just providing sponsorship, Saffery Champness has immersed itself in the walk by joining the walk’s committee, attending regular

bonsai group put on a fantastic wedding fair for any bride to be at their premises on the Bridge, St Sampson. With champagne to cocktails, tipi’s to table dressing, the event catered for every brides need and with the Oculus Vision googles from Dorfmiester Studios, there was even something there for the Groom as well. The event was staged throughout Bonsia’s unique showrooms and each exhibitor had their own beautiful space to display thier work. Jame’s le Gallez owner of Apertitif, created some colourful cocktails, ‘It was a really great opportunity to be part of the Bonsai Wedding Fair; being able to showcase our full bar service to guests was a real treat, many of whom were pleasantly surprised at the level of detail we went into and the high number of guests that we could cater for. Overall, I thought it was a great turnout of both suppliers and guests, all of whom were very intrigued by our selfserve cocktails and our bottled cocktails. I’m really looking forward to seeing them at weddings in the near future’. With a constantly flow of people coming and going through out the day and fantastic line up of exhibitors the event was a great sucess. We definitely are looking forward to the next one.

Guernsey’s very own home grown nurses celebrated high achievements last month. Sponsored by Healthspan and Treeline, the S12 Graduation Ball took place with a ceremony at Les Cotils, followed by a dinner and dance at The Duke of Normandie on the 4th March 2016. The awards were presented by representatives from the University of East Anglia The nursing course was solely based in Guernsey. Working at the Institute of Health and Social Care Studies which is affiliated with the University of East Anglia, working towards the degree the course ran for 3 years with the nurses time split between learning 50% theory in classroom settings and 50% learning in clinical practice under the supervision of an existing Registered Nurse who is now a mentor, within HSSD. Nurses were individually required to organise further placements, some students worked within NHS trusts in Wales and England and one student nurse went to Nicaragua during this time. All other practice placements were 12 weeks long in a variety of settings within HSSD, in both the hospital and community settings. Placements were also specialised in either adult or mental health nursing. On completion of the course, students were guaranteed a job within HSSD here on Guernsey were they live and trained.

ENHANCE THE FLAVOUR... With this month’s theme of enhance we wanted to look at cooking with spice, so we got in touch with James Ferguson from Cooked who has created a real simple Indian style dish that we can create at home...

SIMPLE TIKKA SAUCE You will need: 4 garlic cloves, finely grated 4 teaspoons finely grated peeled ginger (juice by putting in a clean towel and ringing the juice out) 4 teaspoons ground turmeric 2 teaspoons garam masala 2 teaspoons ground coriander 2 teaspoons ground cumin 500/ 750 ml whole-milk yogurt 1 tablespoon salt 3 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) 1 small shallot finely diced 1/4 cup tomato paste 6 cardamom pods, crushed 2 dried chilli (if you fancy) stock, cream or tomato juice 200ml approx plus extra to thin the sauce if nescesary

Photography by Tiffany Matthews Combine garlic, ginger, turmeric, garam masala, coriander, and cumin in a bowl Heat ghee in a large heavy pan over medium heat What to do: Add onion, tomato paste, cardamom, and chilli and cook, stirring cotinually until onion is soft Add the spice mixture and cook until spices start to colour Add yoghurt and stock, cream or tomato juice and bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer until it’s the consistency you want.

LEMON, GARLIC, SAFFRON AND NIGELLA PRAWNS WITH A SWEET POTATO BAHJI You will need: 2 large sweet potato 1 clove of garlic 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander ½ teaspoon ground turmeric ½ teaspoon nigella seeds ¼ teaspoon ground ginger (or the juice of fresh ginger) Gram flour approximately 3 table spoons (enough to bind the mixture) Seasoning What to do: Peel and grate the sweet potatoes (could use parsnips or butternut squash as an alternative) Mix all your spices and heat in a dry pan until they start to smoke (don’t allow them to turn to dark) Remove straight from the pan and add to the sweet potato Peel and crush the garlic (add more if you fancy) Mix in with the other ingredients adding enough Gram flour to bind the mixture together Season and shape very roughly into balls .. deep fry or shallow fry until golden.. finish in the oven if there quite ‘Cooked’ all the way through..

THE FAB FOUR are in the island and ready to perform for you. It may not be John, Paul, George and Ringo, but in the absence of the real deal The Day Trippers make for a very compelling alternative. With their passion and enthusiasm for Beatles music coupled with clear strengths as musicians and performers, these four young friends are helping keep the spirit of the 60's thriving in Guernsey.

‘It has gone down really well. Everyone knows lots of Beatles songs, even if they don’t know they do. We have people of all ages singing and dancing along.’ A typical gig features songs spanning The Beatles’ entire career, from first single Love Me Do to right up to the lateon hits Hey Jude and Let It Be.

Formed early last year, the quartet has built up a diverse and growing fan base from its regular gigs and consistently wow audiences with its energetic performances.

From their first public outing at the Dorset Arms last May, The Day Trippers have always performed in suits, paying homage to their idols’ iconic 60's era. As soon as they had some gig money coming in, they started investing in authentic equipment, including Vox guitar amps, a Hofner violin bass and Gretsch and Epiphone guitars.

The band was the brainchild of Nathanial Eker who plays rhythm guitar and takes lead vocals on most songs. ‘The Beatles is my all time favourite band. The song-writing and musicianship is amazing and it is so catchy. I knew that a good Beatles live show would appeal to a lot of people over here.’

Last summer they played a number of open air gigs in Market Square over Saturday lunchtimes. They will be doing more of these this season along with a daytime gig at Candie Gardens, close to the anniversary of when The Beatles played there in August 1963. Nathanial hopes this will become an annual event.

Brothers Jack and Arthur McGahy play lead guitar and drums respectively and Dan Noyon completes the line-up on bass.

With a number of pub gigs under their belt, including the recent ‘sell-out’ fundraiser for Jonah Gillingham at the De La Rue, the band plans to play many more nightspots this year, both in and out of Town. It is also available for private bookings. The guys said they may even incorporate a couple of nonBeatles tracks into the set, albeit very much of the same ilk, such as tunes by The Kinks and The Who.

While authenticity is very important to them - both in terms of appearance and sound - the band are keen to stress that they are not a strict tribute. ‘We are halfway between a tribute and a cover band,’ said Arthur. ‘We do not do the accents and do not do gigs in character, pretending we are them. We perform as ourselves playing songs that we love.’

As a Radio Station, spring tends to bring with it an increase of activity as the presenters and station venture outside again, and the busy events calendar gathers momentum. There are as always a number of exciting events to look forward each year on this beautiful Island and I am sure this year will provide a bumper year of highlights. It is during times like these that we have to look at what we offer our listeners and commercial clients and work out how we can “enhance” their experience of what we offer. We are in a competitive space, and if we don’t constantly look at what we do and how we do it then we will end up facing the wrong direction. We can never take any of our business for granted and I believe that has underpinned our success over the last 20 years.

Incredibly it is Easter already and there is so much to look forward to in 2016, as the weather improves (hopefully) and we move in to spring and then the summer. Thankfully it is early this year and I get the feeling from most that this is welcomed.

Radio’s success is based on how we make people feel and their experience of our output. We try hard to constantly assess and review the music we play and how we entertain. There are plenty of places our listeners can go to be entertained and we will NEVER lose sight of that fact and indeed it keeps us on our toes and very motivated. We need to ensure that we reach the best standard of output every single day and we need to work at increasing what we are capable of. We need to review what we do every day, every week, every

year. Surely that is what we have to do as individuals in and out of work and as a business. We can enhance the experience of our station by enhancing our attitude and recognising that we should always possess the hunger to do things better.

I believe that we always need to look at how we can improve and enhance any experience we offer. If the experience we offer is a good one, then we can always improve on it. If it is a less good one then we need to work harder at improving significantly. At Island FM we will have to ensure that the passion our audience has for our island and for our station is matched by the experience we offer. No two people are the same so with several tens of thousands of people listening we will certainly be kept on our toes. Fortunately I have a team of people fully committed to delivering compelling radio with passion, enthusiasm and humour. In summarising I wanted to leave you with a very poignant and relevant quote from Maya Angelou... “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” Enjoy Your Month. So you’re opening a concession store at Kings Health Premier Club? Yes. We’ve teamed up with Kings to open a concession store to coincide with their fantastic new facilities that are being developed. As well as having our main store in Town and the additional store at the Bridge, we loved the concept of taking the product to the customer to make shopping for sportswear even more accessible.

Last year we sourced and supplied the official souvenir T-Shirt for both the Pink Ladies Sunset Walk and the Guernsey Dairy Milk Run. This enabled us to make a donation of £1300 to the Pink Ladies. This year we plan to continue this relationship and have already become the official supplier of the Guernsey Dairy Milk Run clothing for 2016. What sport clubs do you work with on the island? We have supplied many sport clubs with kit including Guernsey Athletics, the Rover's Mini's Football Club, Guernsey Volleyball and Guernsey Hockey to name

We’re able to provide sport specific advice when purchasing equipment or clothing. Pregnancy is a wonderful and exciting time, but as a mother of two, I totally understand the emotional roller coaster those 9months can bring. The physiological changes during pregnancy will come no matter what, but you can have some control over how your body adapts to those changes. Being active during pregnancy can help relieve stress, lowers the risk of diabetes, obesity and preeclampsia, plus regular exercise may help you have an easier pregnancy and delivery. During pregnancy the body core temperature rises slightly, therefore it’s vital to remember this whilst working out to make sure you don’t over heat. Dehydration can also raise your body temperature, so drink plenty of water before and during your workout. If you attend studio classes, find a spot where you can stay cool or ask your instructor for a fan to be set up next to you. No matter how early on in your pregnancy you must inform your instructor. During pregnancy the hormone Relaxin is released that cause the ligaments to loosen in preparation for birthing, making them prone to injury, thus avoid

movements that involving jumping or bouncing. Look to strengthen the legs with exercises like squats to build up the quads and help keep you stable as bump grows, plus strong legs are fundamental if your planning for an active birth. Don’t be afraid to add some weights to your workout, look to keep the weight low and up the reps to avoid strain. Yoga is a great form of prenatal exercise, many postures can help alleviate common pregnancy aliments, but avoid twist, deep back bends and lying on your back or front, opt to rest on your left side when in Savasana, or ask your teacher to prop you up with bolsters. The benefits of Pranayama (breathing) and meditation have profound effects for birthing. As you move through your practice take cautions not to over stretch with your new found ‘Relaxin’ flexibility,

If you were an active runner before pregnancy it’s fine to continue providing your Doctor has given you the go ahead. Take the time to warm up, with gentle stretches and walk for 5minutes before you start jogging. Make sure to wear a supportive sports bra and chose routes with even surfaces to avoid tripping. If

you feel uncomfortable running, opt for walking or cycling. Swimming can be a real treat, the sensation of weightlessness the water brings can help ease tired and heavy limbs. Stay away from hot tubs, diving, holding your breath and breast stroke if you have SPD. With any cardio look to reduce the intensity level to the point that you’re able to carry on a conversation comfortably during your workout, if you can’t then your working to hard.

Whether your pregnant or not maintaining a strong and healthy pelvic floor is vital to prevent embarrassing accidents and restore vaginal muscle tone. Tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor up (as if you’re stopping the urine flow), hold for up to 10 seconds, then relax. Do 16 reps three times a day.

FITNESS, FRIENDSHIP AND FUN If you have ever thought you were too old to try something new, two ladies who are regular users of the Beau Sejour gym would undoubtedly make you think again. Rosanna Buckingham and Jan Page – both in their mid 60s – have discovered another side to getting fit and have become firm friends along the way. Both were referred by their GPs to the Life Fit programme at Beau Sejour that

gives her extra motivation on those cold rainy mornings when the sofa and daytime TV could be a feasible alternative. ‘The fact that I am meeting Jan definitely gives me that extra push sometimes. There was one week that I wasn’t well enough to work out but I still came to the centre to meet her afterwards for a chat.’ The post workout cappuccino is very much part of the ladies’ regime (they even admit to having a favourite barista). ‘We do an hour in the gym and then come to the café for a coffee and a natter,’ explained Jan. It’s ‘our time’ away from housework, family, shopping etc. and it’s very precious. My partner is also a gym user but I make sure that he goes at a different time – though we sometimes share a lift home. ‘We have met so many people and made a lot of friends here and it’s just great fun.’

Jan had undergone two hip replacements and needed to get moving again while Rosanne suffers from osteoarthritis and the programme was part of her pain management regime. ‘It’s a fantastic programme and it certainly helped me manage my condition. On completion of their respective 10week Life Fit programme the two ladies – encouraged by the fitness instructors – advanced to become regular users of the Beau Sejour gym, which is where they met each other… and they haven’t looked back since. ‘I must admit that if I hadn’t done the Life Fit sessions first, I might have been a bit intimidated coming into the gym,’ explained Jan. ‘But I need not have worried as the atmosphere is so relaxed, the staff are incredibly friendly and there is an extremely diverse range of people. We have a lot of fun and we laugh from start to finish.’

Both Rosanna and Jan know all the gym staff pretty well now and are full of praise for the support they receive. ‘They are always available and willing to help. They keep an eye out to make sure that we are using the equipment properly and advise us if we fancy trying something new,’ said Rosanna. And it seems our ladies’ influence extends even further. ‘We don’t always like the heavy beat music they have on so we get them to change it to 70s or 80s stuff,’ said Jan. ‘We would rather work out (and I admit sing along) to Abba than some hip-hop band we have never heard of.’ Both ladies had tried other gyms in the past – Rosanna even joined one as a member for a short time – but for them Beau Sejour fits the bill.

‘It’s so friendly and relaxed here,’ explains Rosanna. ‘I have been in other gyms where no one speaks to you, the atmosphere is quite intimidating and I felt terribly self-conscious. Beau Sejour feels like ‘our centre’. We love it.’ ‘My children think it’s hilarious I go to the gym at my age,’ said Jan. ‘But we have friends here who are far older than us – one is a demon with the hula hoop with a record of about 150 rotations.’ Rosanna and Jan, who have now taken Freedom Membership of Beau Sejour, would encourage anyone to give it a try. ‘I didn’t know what to expect when I first came to Life Fit,’ said Rosanna. ‘I actually didn’t come the first time the doctor referred me because I was too nervous. But now I have gone on to join the gym I look forward to coming and I feel so much better both physically and mentally. It wasn’t intimidating at all once I got through the door.’ ‘I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it,’ adds Jan. ‘I have improved my fitness levels, developed new skills, made new friends and I have a lot of fun in the process. You are never too old to start something new.’

JACK FALLA So last month I told you all that I was doing another season in Porsche Carrera Cup GB. Shortly after I had written the piece I received a call from German Team Attempto Squadra Course Lamborghini asking if I would consider racing with them in the Blancpain Sprint Series. This took me back; I was set on Carrera Cup and chasing the championship title. Blancpain is a step up the ladder of my racing career, an opportunity I couldn't turn down. However I have never driven a Lamborghini (currently writing this on my way to Germany to test the Lamborghini for the first time).

new manager said (in his deep German accent) "if you can drive a Porsche Jack you can drive anything". I'm hoping that's true! The series is the most well recognised GT event in the world with global coverage and huge crowds. I am paired with GP2 Champion and F1 test driver Davide Valsecchi, from which I expect to learn greatly and believe we are a strong pair in the championship.

Before making the decision my partner Kirsty and I jumped on a plane to Germany to meet the team. Whilst there we met with the team manager, Arkin and everything felt good. The car looked fantastic and I knew I would return home to Guernsey with a big decision resting on my shoulders. The only thing that prevented me saying yes immediately was the fact I have never driven a Lamborghini but as my

Hopefully next time I can tell you of my positive experience in the Lamborghini. The season starts on the 5th of April with my first race being held at Misano in Italy.

FOUND HER FOREVER HOME Molly a black female cat that arrived at the GSPCA in October 2014 finally found her forever home last week. For over a year at the GSPCA the team have been trying to find Molly a home but sadly many of the black cats are passed by especially those in their older years. Molly arrived at the Shelter on the 4th October 2014 after her owner could no longer care for her. When she arrived she was found to have an eye ulcer that took many months to heal. With Molly being 10 years of age many looking for a cat tend to help the younger animals but finally last week it was Molly’s turn. On Friday Molly was adopted and now lives in her new home in St Peter Port. As soon as she arrived she made herself at home at the team at the GSPCA are overjoyed with how well she is doing. So to start with I wondered if this really was a rough and tough device or just another copy CAT with a brand name slapped on the back. I could see the smirk on Peter’s face

The event is held over a whole day and runs from 09.00 until 16.00 and 17.00 until 19.00. The evening session tends to be more popular with the community, including career changers, the unemployed, university students and graduates, returners to work etc. The day session is focused on all Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Post-16 students attending from all of the schools and colleges. Feedback from last year’s Show highlighted just how important it is to have an event showcasing opportunities with 64% of students saying they now knew more about the different careers in Guernsey having been to the Careers Show. On the Day You can visit over 80 different stands across a broad range of career sectors, volunteering organisations and training providers. A large number of the stands will have an activity that you can try and some of them will be running competitions to help you make the most of your visit to the Show. The Navy Chefs will be demonstrating their skills of preparing food for the troops, Beau Sejour will be showing a TRX exercise class and the training required and there will be a Street Dance show where the choreographer will talk about how he got into this line of work and the different routes you can take. There will also be opportunities for a CV and job interview workshop as well as speaking with a qualified Careers Adviser for advice and guidance about your next step. THE FUTURE CAN BE DIFFERENT: A GOAL FOR GUERNSEY I have a simple goal for Guernsey which is what makes it so compelling. And it’s an achievable one – as it is one that many people already share. That goal is for Guernsey to be the healthiest and happiest community in the world by 2026. Words by Gavin St.Pierre

and build the Guernsey that will offer the same quality of life that we have today, for our children, we must look beyond economic growth. Social policy is not about social problems that impact other people; it is about all of us and what kind of community we want to live in. Think about your own and your family’s lives, and consider which of these three essential needs is most important to you. Is it your happiness? Or your wealth? Or your health? We all know in our personal and family life that it’s not all about the money. And it’s the same – or I suggest – it should be the same at a community level.

I want to turn this simple vision into an ambition, a goal that we actively aim to be the healthiest and happiest community in the world; with a sustainable environment and a secure, successful and stable economy. And I think we can – and should – achieve this within the next ten years.

After all, it’s only 20 years ago in 1996, the New York Times named Guernsey as the happiest place on earth. We can be so again. It’s also eminently measurable. There are rafts of indices and key performance indicators that can track our progress to our goal.

Can you imagine such a place? A place where people aspire to live, prosper and raise their families; where people want to start a business and contribute to their community. We are that place for many people already - but not for all, by any means. So what would this goal mean in practice? It would for example mean: every individual with a disability is treated with respect and can contribute to the full breadth of their ambition; as we grow older, we will live independently for so long as we would wish; and mental illness loses its stigma.

This goal is not incompatible with fiscal prudency. On the contrary, if we can deliver this goal, it will assist our longterm budget management. For example, a society where all are enabled to work, irrespective of any disabilities, will not only be a happier and more inclusive one but also a more productive one.

The need for continued economic success and growth remains. A thriving economy will remain the bedrock which provides us – individually and collectively – with financial security and finances our public services. So what is required to get us to our goal? Firstly, this is not just about somehow finding and throwing more resources at various social problems. We need

In our case, economic poverty is normally an indicator of other social problems, often deriving from the poverty of opportunity and the poverty of hope. If we’re going to address the issues that matter most to people in our community

nimble, collaborative government which marshals resources (public, private and third sector) differently. And we will need to use resources differently, for example, by pooling budgets or using social finance. Secondly, when our values are clear, making decisions will be easier. So this visionary goal must sit at the heart of the next States Strategic Plan. It must be a goal not just for government but for the whole community. It must be clearly understood and widely communicated. There is so much energy and enthusiasm that we just need to harness and direct behind a common goal. Thirdly, we must constantly focus on effectiveness and outcomes; so the goal becomes the yardstick against which all strategies, plans and policies would be measured. Having a clear goal and then understanding what this means in practice, in terms of the real, visible benefits we’d like to see for Guernsey, will give us a framework – which we currently lack – in which we can start to effectively prioritise - and make those difficult decisions on how to allocate the finite pool of available resources Fourthly, we will require unequivocal leadership which must have a bias for action and impatience; it must create a culture of ‘can do’ optimism and achievement that attracts from peers, the media and the community positive, constructive contribution based on fact - not harping, negative criticism based on emotion. It must be capable of commanding the confidence of the community and of business to invest in our economy. We are at a tipping point in Guernsey’s political, economic and social development. We have great strengths and there are great opportunities. The future can be different. A future where, on our island and in our community, nobody is left behind and everybody has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. I hope you will all agree that is a future worth striving for.

‘DEMOCRACY IS ALWAYS A WORK IN PROGRESS’ The Dandelion Project wants to help to make Guernsey the best place to live on earth by the year 2020, and in February the third TEDx event opened our eyes to some of the many ways we could achieve that goal. Santiago Siri, a programmer from Buenos Aires and founder of Democracy.Earth, explored how the Internet could transform our political system for the better. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Santiago Siri witnessed a troubling economy and a corrupt political system. He and his peers sought to change this system from within by creating DemocracyOS, an open-source software that enabled people to get informed, debate and vote online. The software even had an affiliated political party, El Partido de la Red (the Net Party), with candidates committed to act upon what citizens had voted for on DemocracyOS. Achieving 1% of the vote in the 2013 elections wasn’t enough to get a candidate elected but it was sufficient to run the first digital democracy pilot in Latin America. What Santiago learnt through this process was that the main enemy El Partido de la Red was trying to fight was corruption. He was personally targeted by secret service agents, who tried to get him to agree to pay a bribe to advance the party’s fortunes. ‘It was heartbreaking to see how corrupt and how nasty political systems are in the developing world,’ he says. ‘When you get into politics everyone warns you about how dirty it can be but the truth is that it’s even worse than you’d expect.’ Buckminster Fuller, an architect from San Francisco, said: ‘You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.’ As Santiago explains, ‘This perfectly sums up the ethos and mindset of Silicon Valley, and in 2015 we received call from Y Combinator, considered the most important investment firm in Silicon Valley, to build a global non-profit, Democracy.Earth, that really looks at the problem of democracy on a global scale.’ Just as the Dandelion Project aims to make Guernsey the best place to live on earth, Santiago and his colleagues are seeking to transform democracy, governance and institutions. To do this, they are focusing on social technology. ‘Social technology, and specifically voting, is the core building block that makes government possible,’ says Santiago. ‘We actually vote every day:

when we put a like on Facebook, when we retweet on Twitter or put a heart on Instagram, we’re voting; it’s the main interaction we have with the Internet every day.’ This kind of voting has no institutional implications, but what if e-voting were introduced? ‘A free, standard and open protocol like an e-vote would have real implications for any kind of organisation, be it a building administration, a community, a country club or an entire nation.’ So could Guernsey adopt e-voting and serve as a democratic model for the rest of the world? The crucial elements for the adoption of such a system are a commitment by an institution to bind its decisions to the outcome of a vote, proper identity verification for voters and the ‘black box’ – who gets to count the votes and how the votes are counted. The technology that makes this work is called the Bitcoin Blockchain: providing the means to authenticate ourselves online, and enabling us to vote anonymously, it allows every vote to be stored and analysed by anyone and is

100% transparent. Santiago is confident we can be pioneers: ‘I definitely believe Guernsey is an ideal place to start piloting the kind of technology we’re developing with Democracy.Earth. There are not many places or governments around the world willing to innovate in their democratic system, but Guernsey seems to be one of the great exceptions to this as there is a solid understanding of the potential that the blockchain has for transparency and accountability. The main challenge with democracy is that very few places are willing to change their decision-making process at all.’ Power delegation among peers is a concept that could have real relevance for our island. The idea is that we could

elect representatives whom we trust to make decisions on particular topics; for instance, we could ask respected teachers to work on our behalf to resolve the current debate on education. One would hope that corruption isn’t a big concern here, but with 38 individual Deputies due to be elected this month, any number of hidden agendas could exist, consciously or otherwise. ‘I can see that corruption is not an issue for a place like Guernsey, but it could set the bar for the rest of the world to see. I firmly believe that having a whole country exploring this kind of democracy, and especially being an island where we could clearly understand the impact of the technology like nowhere else, could make Guernsey a flagship case for a new kind of democracy really adapted to the context of the 21st century. It would give us plenty of insight into how modern technology and the Internet can help channel society’s demands and even evolve the whole democratic process by making participation more dynamic and issue orientated.’

As Santiago states, ‘Democracy is always a work in progress.’ If Guernsey could set the standard for how best to implement it, we would truly be on track to becoming the best place to live on earth.

The days are getting noticeably longer, the bulbs are out and we’re enjoying a bit of sun on our faces. It’s time to get going on our outdoor spaces if we’re going to make the most of them for the warmer months. So, how we can enhance our garden’s features and create an inviting space in which to relax? How can we perk up our patch with only a few hours’ effort? It’s amazing what a bit of ‘outdoor housework’ will achieve, before we even think about doing anything ‘new’. Start by getting rid of any eyesore junk, weed the most visible parts of the garden and seating areas and give the jet washer an outing. If you have a bit more time, then tidy up your beds ready for some annual colour; a thick layer of mulch in the form of bark chippings around existing shrubs will go a long way to making things look neat and tidy, while simultaneously keeping weeds down and minimising the need to water. The quickest, easiest way to bring instant colour to a garden or seating area is with patio containers. They are quick to plant up, easy to water and keep tidy and more resistant to snail and slug attacks. It’s fun following a colour scheme or theme and this helps when faced with the overwhelming choice at the garden centre. It can be an expensive initial outlay to purchase

new terracotta pots, so why not be inventive with your choice of containers? Old boats and troughs look wonderful and you may even find something you can upcycle from Longue Hougue. The local garden centres will tempt you with their beautiful displays of spring and summer flowering bedding plants. It’s really easy to go mad once you’re in there and overbuy. So, go prepared be realistic about the spaces you have to fill, whether in containers or in beds. Also, consider the time you have available, not only to plant, but also to water and care for your plants daily as the weather heats up. It sounds obvious, but once plants are bought it’s you looking after them, so make sure that you’re ready at home to install them soon after purchase - or leave them at the garden centre until you are! Early-flowering pansies will provide instant and long-lasting colour, at an affordable price. Other reliable plants to buy include pelargoniums, petunias and verbenas. Nemesias are pretty, fragrant, will flower all summer and are easy to grow - what more could you want? Don’t forget to use perennial and evergreen plants to give your containers long-lasting structure. Good examples are ivy, heuchera and fuchsia; these plants can be left in your containers when summer is over, ready for new schemes.

CURB APPEAL The days are getting warmer, the evenings are getting longer and it is that time of year when everybody has a spring clean and a thorough sort out at home. We are entering the optimum selling time of the year and how a property is presented makes a big difference in how long it will be on the market before a sale is agreed. Potential buyers often drive past your home and walk around the area before deciding to view it internally. Buyers will be discouraged if the property looks like it is in need of repair, has weeds growing out of the gutters or rubbish in the drive. When inside your home it is helpful for the buyer to feel welcome and comfortable. The best way to do this is to keep the house clean and as free from clutter as possible. It promotes the size of the rooms and allows the buyer to walk through the property unencumbered. Also, avoid the house smelling of any unsavoury odours. The cliché of baking bread or fresh coffee genuinely works. Taking care of a few odd jobs before viewings begin is a must as you want to create an environment where the person viewing feels they can move straight in. A buyer will be discouraged if they notice a number of small jobs while they are given a tour. Obvious examples are chipped or dirty paintwork, doors that don’t close properly, broken bulbs or a garden where the lawn needs to be mowed and the borders tidied up. These jobs are quick, easy and often cheap to fix but perceived as a nuisance to house hunters who may not have a realistic idea of the cost to put these things right.

The days are getting noticeably longer, the bulbs are out and we’re enjoying a bit of sun on our faces. It’s time to get going on our outdoor spaces if we’re going to make the most of them for the warmer months. So, how we can enhance our garden’s features and create an inviting space in which to relax? How can we perk up our patch with only a few hours’ effort? It’s amazing what a bit of ‘outdoor housework’ will achieve, before we even think about doing anything ‘new’. Start by getting rid of any eyesore junk, weed the most visible parts of the garden and seating areas and give the jet washer an outing. If you have a bit more time, then tidy up your beds ready for some annual colour; a thick layer of mulch in the form of bark chippings around existing shrubs will go a long way to making things look neat and tidy, while simultaneously keeping weeds down and minimising the need to water. The quickest, easiest way to bring instant colour to a garden or seating area is with patio containers. They are quick to plant up, easy to water and keep tidy and more resistant to snail and slug attacks. It’s fun following a colour scheme or theme and this helps when faced with the overwhelming choice at the garden centre. It can be an expensive initial outlay to purchase

new terracotta pots, so why not be inventive with your choice of containers? Old boats and troughs look wonderful and you may even find something you can upcycle from Longue Hougue. The local garden centres will tempt you with their beautiful displays of spring and summer flowering bedding plants. It’s really easy to go mad once you’re in there and overbuy. So, go prepared be realistic about the spaces you have to fill, whether in containers or in beds. Also, consider the time you have available, not only to plant, but also to water and care for your plants daily as the weather heats up. It sounds obvious, but once plants are bought it’s you looking after them, so make sure that you’re ready at home to install them soon after purchase - or leave them at the garden centre until you are! Early-flowering pansies will provide instant and long-lasting colour, at an affordable price. Other reliable plants to buy include pelargoniums, petunias and verbenas. Nemesias are pretty, fragrant, will flower all summer and are easy to grow - what more could you want? Don’t forget to use perennial and evergreen plants to give your containers long-lasting structure. Good examples are ivy, heuchera and fuchsia; these plants can be left in your containers when summer is over, ready for new schemes.

CQWERTAXHV The most economical means of getting colour into your garden however is with a few packets of seeds, and all you need is a bright windowsill or two to get them off to a good start; quite a few seed varieties can also go straight into prepared ground although this takes a little more preparation, unless you want to create a simple wildflower patch. If you’re able to clear and prepare an area of bed a few feet square then you could choose to develop a ‘cutting garden’ which will serve the dual purpose of looking gorgeous all summer long and providing you with cut flowers for your home. It will also attract bees and butterflies to your garden, so it’s a win-win. Sweet peas, especially the traditional strains such as matucana and cupani are easy to grow, jewel-like in colour and smell intoxicating. Other fromseed options include the tobacco plant - nicotiana, phlox and tall varieties of antirrhinum (snapdragons); these will all romp away and, with a bit of picking and regular watering, will reward you with weeks of flowers. If you’re lucky enough to have a greenhouse or potting shed then you could also save money by buying mini ‘plug’ plants and get some hanging baskets planted up on the cheap. Your lawn will be crying out for attention, especially after the wet winter we’ve had. It’s easy to neglect it and think it just needs a mow every now and then, but a bit of extra care at this time of year will reap dividends in the coming months. If your space isn’t too overwhelmingly big then you can aerate your own lawn yourself with a hollow-tined fork. This removes small plugs of soil from the lawn into which you can then rake sharp sand and topsoil (available pre-mixed locally). It’s time to start feeding and weeding your lawn now too. If all that sounds like a bit too much work, then why not consider artificial turf, a cost-efficient, very low maintenance and aesthetically acceptable option? Finally - don’t forget our feathered friends and the colour, sounds and interest they bring to even the most modest of outdoor

' ; spaces. If you haven’t got one already, consider siting a bird table in or near one of your borders or trees - birds love to hop from the safety of undergrowth and shrubs onto a table or feeder but won’t be so keen on one marooned in the middle of an open area. Be diligent with keeping your feeders topped up and clean, and don’t forget to provide a small bowl of water too, and you’ll be amazed at the variety of little visitors you attract.

FROM PITCH TO PRINCES TRUST Gareth Southgate speaks to GSYLife about how football has enchanced his life. Former England player and current England under 21s head coach Gareth Southgate was in Guernsey as the Awards for Achievement keynote speaker sponsored by Providence. Whilst on the island, Providence arranged for Gareth to spend time with youngsters taking part in The Prince’s Trust TEAM programme and he was also guest of honour at Guernsey FC’s ‘For One Night Only’ Ball.

With 12 outdoor pitches, including a replica of the Wembley surface, a full-size indoor 3G pitch, a suite of rehabilitation and sports science areas, and an indoor Futsal sports hall, St. George’s Park provides world-class facilities for all England teams ahead of international fixtures. ‘One of the real beauties is that we now have St George’s Park,’ said Gareth. ‘When I was a player, we didn’t have a home but now we’re all together and we can be there at the same time as the senior team.’ That he says is hugely inspirational for the younger players who now have the chance to train alongside and talk to the likes of Wayne Rooney and James Milner. One of the biggest challenges he faces as the national coach is choosing the right approach. ‘There is always the balance of, “are we going flat out to win or do we want to learn?” as we are still a development team. That can be difficult for the public to understand as they naturally want he results,’ he said. ‘We do have to make decisions to leave players out. Tournaments come at the end of a physically and mentally demand season and some players can cope with that well and others not so well.’ Gareth highlights Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Harry Kane and Dele Alli as among the potential stars of the future and said it is important for younger players to be given the opportunity to play in their club’s first team. ‘It’s very easy for us to say that managers should do that but we’re not walking in their shoes,’ he said.

We definitely over guarded on telling them how good they are – absolutely.’ Away from professional football, Gareth is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust which supports an age group that in his role with England he is now used to working with. It was his connection with the trust that led to Providence arranging for him to run a training session and spend time with youngsters involved in the trust’s TEAM programme. ‘Lots of young people in life need an opportunity and for people to believe in them. Football can give people experience of working as part of a team and being a leader and give them the confidence they need to make decisions about their future,’ he said. Gareth’s trip to Guernsey was only his second, having come here 20 years ago with Crystal Palace, but he had heard good things about Guernsey FC. ‘Ross Allen has the most amazing

It’s a really unique situation and for them to be challenging for playoff spots is absolutely great.’ And the stretch of water shouldn’t stop youngsters from aiming for a career as a professional footballer. ‘It’s a different challenge for youngsters here, but there are role models such as Matt Le Tissier who should, and will, inspire them,’ he said.

PETERSFIELD CONTINUES TO GROW In response to the success of the business over the last twelve months Petersfield Garden Centre have created two new management positions to oversee and further develop the landscaping and maintenance services on offer. Newly appointed Maintenance Manager Jason Holland has been with the company for five years and draws from nearly 20 years of local horticultural experience in all aspects of gardening. As an award winning Fressia grower, Jason also has a keen interest in Bonsai trees and acquired a Bonsai Growers Diploma during one of numerous visits to Japan to follow his passion. His wealth of knowledge, practical experience and commitment to customer service made him the obvious choice. Tim Lambeth has been promoted to Landscaping Manager after 12 months with the company. Having moved from rural Worcestershire last year his ten years of wide ranging experience in the gardening and construction trades married with an HNC in Garden Design from Pershore Horticultural College make him the perfect candidate to drive the company forward.

NEW CEO OF ROBUS GROUP Robus Group has appointed Simon Walker as its new chief executive officer. As well as his role as CEO of the Guernseyheadquartered independent insurance management, fiduciary and financial advisory group, Mr Walker, a qualified accountant, will also hold the role of chief operating officer of FCG (formerly First Central Group Limited), which is Robus’ biggest client and the holding company for 1st CENTRAL companies based in Guernsey, Gibraltar and the UK. Educated at Elizabeth College, Mr Walker, who has 20 years’ experience in the insurance sector, will primarily work with his team at Robus to identify the key issues faced by the risk management community and develop solutions for effective mitigation of those risks. ‘I see my role as being one of helping the team to focus on key areas of opportunity. Robus Group is very much open for business and looking forward to helping clients, both existing and prospective, in their risk management challenges. I will be responsible for communicating that message to the business community,’ he said. Working with FCG, Mr Walker seeks to leverage his extensive operational experience gained in a large corporate environment for the benefit of the group, which is in a phase of rapid growth having recently announced the opening of its Manchester business with the creation of a further 150 jobs. ‘Having worked previously with the senior team at FCG, I was hugely excited to be given the opportunity to work closely again with a team whose approach to business is very closely aligned to my own. 1st CENTRAL’s recent win as Employer of the Year in the Guernsey Awards for Achievement bears testament to the importance placed on staff development, which I regard as essential for future success,’ he said

PROMOTION TO EY SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM Chris Bold has been promoted to senior manager at EY. Mr Bold joined the Guernsey office in 2005 as a graduate associate and qualified with the ICAEW in 2009. He has over 10 years’ experience in financial services and particularly asset management, working in assurance, transaction advisory services and restructuring. After obtaining the ICAEW Certificate in Insolvency in 2013, he moved to EY’s London office on a two year secondment with its restructuring department. He worked in the Liquidations and Strategic Exit Routes (LASER) team and has recently returned to the Guernsey office. During his secondment, Mr Bold continued to develop his skills in reporting accountant work and assisting with fund IPOs and capital raisings, sales and business development as well as project management. The secondment has also given him access to specialist Insolvency Practitioners and opportunities to work on truly global projects as well as high-profile public interest engagements. These development opportunities afforded to Chris will enable him to support the growth of the EY Channel Islands’ business. “My time in London’s LASER team allowed me to lead a broad range of insolvent and solvent matters which has given me experience across sectors and service lines related to complex restructurings that I wouldn’t have otherwise had,” said Mr Bold. “It has allowed me to enhance my experience such that I can now provide Investment Managers and Fund clients with services across the entire fund lifecycle.” Andrew Dann, EY’s Channel Islands managing partner, said: “Chris has developed a broad and deep skillset across multiple service lines including assurance and restructuring, primarily in the asset management sector. His significant achievements have been recognised and I congratulate him on his recent promotion.

What made you choose to work for Specsavers? There was an opportunity to join the A-Level Leavers Programme once I had finished sixth form, which seemed like a great chance to learn and experience marketing without doing a degree. It was a three-year programme which gave me experience in local and national marketing, creative, public relations and direct marketing that couldn’t be offered anywhere else on the island. Specsavers is also well known as a great place to work. What does your average day look like? I now work within the Direct Marketing team and mostly work on projects for our hearing and Healthcall home-visiting businesses. Since they are both newer parts of Specsavers, they have lots of exciting challenges that keep me on my toes! Direct Marketing as a team are responsible for communicating with our existing customers via recall letters and various other incremental mailings. What professional training do you undertake? As part of the A-Level Leavers Programme, I studied for the Professional Certificate in Marketing accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. You can also go on to the Diploma in Marketing or something more specific if you prefer. There are also other opportunities to develop your skills through training courses hosted by Specsavers such as presenting and customer service. Where is your journey taking you? I have now completed the programme and I am working permanently in the Direct Marketing team. Even though I am no longer on the scheme, I am still supported to grow and develop at Specsavers. Looking back, what advice would you give to other students considering your own experience? I highly recommend going for the A-Level Leavers Programme! It is a fantastic scheme which gives you so much experience in marketing which you cannot get anywhere else on the island. It also gives you plenty of opportunities to travel, meet new people and pave the way for a career in marketing.

What made you choose to work for Deloitte? Deloitte was well known at my university for being one of the top firms to work for if you wanted a career in finance, so it was an obvious target for me. When I was researching firms Deloitte’s approach to their staff really stood out to me - their benefits package is one of the best I saw. Plus, Deloitte’s Agile Working policy means employees have some flexibility to choose where, when and how they work. It is also possible to take off longer periods for study or travel. What does your average day look like? The first thing I do in the morning is have a discussion with my Manager about the work that needs to be performed during the day. I work through these tasks before stopping for lunch, usually with colleagues. I have another catch up with my Manager at the end of the day so I can go through any issues that may have arisen and receive feedback. What professional training do you undertake? The career progression with Deloitte is excellent. I am currently studying to become a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Trainees study alongside work, taking time out to attend college and do our exams. Deloitte supports us financially and in terms of study leave. Where is your journey taking you? At the moment my top priority is to qualify as an accountant. The qualifications take around three years to complete and beyond that, in the longer term, with the fantastic opportunities that Deloitte offers, I hope to be able to travel and work abroad while expanding my skills and experience. Looking back, what advice would you give to other graduates considering your own experience? I came from a science background, having studied Biology at the University of Warwick, so the one thing I would say is just because you don’t have a degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Maths doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for a job in finance. If you want to work in finance don’t let anything hold you back; transferrable skills and your ability to work well with others are much more important.

DELOITTE ANNOUNCES 2016 BURSARY AND GAP YEAR SCHEMES FOR GUERNSEY STUDENTS Students who plan to go to university in autumn 2016 can now apply for the Deloitte Bursary scheme. In addition, young people wanting to gain work experience before continuing their studies could benefit from the firm’s gap year placement. The bursary package, one of the best available in the Channel Islands, includes financial support during university as well as a minimum of four weeks paid work experience and the opportunity to join Deloitte as a graduate. William Bishop successfully applied for the bursary in 2011 and read Physical Geography at Exeter University. The three-year bursary made a big difference to him financially and the work experience opened his eyes to career opportunities in accountancy and professional services. ‘Thanks to the bursary I was able to go on a field trip to Brazil in my final year. I stayed on an extra week and it was a real “once in a lifetime experience,’ says Will, who subsequently joined Deloitte as a graduate and is now a trainee. ‘At the end of my bursary there was no requirement for me to apply for a job at Deloitte but having had work experience with the firm I could see the career opportunities open to me and I was lucky enough to be accepted as a trainee in 2014.’ Current bursary recipients are Sammy Parr who is reading Geography and Lottie Parkes, a Modern Languages student. This diversity of degree subject reflects the firm’s need for people from all educational backgrounds and interests.

Deloitte also offers one-year placements for students who want to take a gap year between finishing school and starting university. Jacques Ogier plans to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at either Manchester University or London School of Economics. Before starting college this autumn he is working in the Audit and Advisory team at Deloitte and is enjoying the experience. Jacques explains: ‘I feel this gap year will give me an edge when it comes to applying for jobs after my degree. Gaining hands-on experience will appeal to all employers and Deloitte’s training is recognised as being first class. I am also getting exposed to client work and really enjoying it.’ Students who are finishing school this summer and considering university can apply for a gap year placement or the bursary scheme. ‘We are looking for bright students who are ambitious and understand the value of work experience,’ says John Clacy, Lead Partner at Deloitte in Guernsey.

Sammy comments: ‘The Deloitte Bursary scheme is a brilliant opportunity as it has given me insight and experience of the business world whilst giving me the financial freedom to undertake voluntary research work together with further study of urban environments, one of my particular areas of interest.’

GREAT RESPONSE TO GUERNSEY’S HONG KONG OFFICE LAUNCH A launch event to mark the opening of Guernsey’s representative office in Hong Kong attracted nearly 200 attendees. Hosted on Wednesday 2 March at the China Club in Central, the event outlined the services offered by Guernsey’s international finance centre and featured a panel discussion on the current economic climate and keynote speeches from the Lord Flight, a member of the House of Lords, and Deputy Lyndon Trott, Chairman of Guernsey Finance and former Chief Minister of Guernsey. Kate Clouston, Guernsey Finance’s Director of International Business Development, welcomed the audience by sharing some anecdotes from the week’s activities surrounding the office launch, including a welcome in Mandarin for guests from China and referencing British Consul General to Hong Kong Caroline Wilson’s remarks that ‘now was exactly the right time to open an office in Hong Kong’. Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley, who concluded the event by thanking speakers, panellists and guests for supporting the event, said the office launch had gone fantastically well. “I was thrilled by the quality of the speakers and panellists and the very positive response that they received from the audience. I am also very grateful to the Lord Flight and Deputy Lyndon Trott, our keynote speakers, and to our very own Kate Clouston whose Mandarin introduction got the event off to a great start and elicited spontaneous applause.’’said Mr Wheatley.

TEDXSTPETERPORT ATTRACTED A RECORD NUMBER OF ATTENDEES AND WAS LIVE STREAMED IN 39 COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE TEDxStPeterPort, sponsored by Sure International, took place on Friday 19 February to a packed crowd of over 300 guests at Beau Sejour theatre. The aim of the event was to inspire people on how to make Guernsey the best place to live on earth. The event which promotes “ideas worth spreading” was also live streamed for the first time, and was viewed in 39 countries worldwide, giving Guernsey an international platform to effect social change. Seventeen international and local speakers each gave 18-minute presentations throughout the day. Topics included how to make Guernsey a finance centre for good, how Guernsey can lead the way in global healthcare as well as talks on reinventing education, happiness, overcoming depression and constructive journalism, to name but a few. Visiting speaker and award-winning filmmaker Scott Thrift talked about the importance of being present and living in the moment, even if it might seem impossible. Local speaker Paul Chambers, the Restorative Justice Co-ordinator for Guernsey, talked about restorative practices and spoke about the uses and importance of restorative justice for a healthy community. He said: “It’s about connecting, forgiving and giving victims their lives back.” He explained his work within Guernsey prison and how cultural change which includes education and rehabilitation is key to creating healthier environments so that prisoners don’t reoffend. David Green’s presentation did not involve any speaking at all, just short and simple slides about the power of

mindfulness. A Guernsey resident, he had just come out of 300 days of silence and his book “Invisible Hand” details his story as a previously stressed out London banker and explains how meditation can help people with mental health issues. Dr. Jack Kreindler, a physician and founder of Centre of Health and Human Performance, spoke about the use of technology in elite sport and how he has been working on adapting machine intelligence to help the sick. He explained how he has been privileged to work with Douglas Adams, who wrote Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and who has been a great inspiration and influence on him. He said he believed that Guernsey, as a small island, offered a unique test bed for this new technology. He asked whether Guernsey could solve the world’s biggest healthcare crisis and said, “Do not underestimate your own power, and that of your island!” Erin Matlock, Founder and CEO of Brain Pages Inc., shared the ways in which nature and science helped her recover from a life changing battle with depression. Meanwhile, Vanessa King, a leading expert on the practical science of happiness, shared, ‘The 10 Keys to Happier Living’ with us. She said: “Goals are how happiness happens!” Nadav Wilf, an investor in tech startups from HeroX, spoke about his company’s incentive prize platform, which enables innovation in communities through prize incentives and Santiago Siri, a tech guru and president of Democracy Earth, explored the impact of modern technology on voting and identity. Ed Fidoe, an education advisor and reformer, talked about 21st century education and the importance of giving young people the opportunity to develop key skills. Ed said: “Real life doesn’t judge you on your first draft, it will keep sending it back until you get it right.”

Eric Avner, CEO of People’s Liberty – a philanthropic lab in Cincinnati – talked about how his organisation brings together civic-minded talent to address challenges and uncover opportunities to accelerate the positive transformation of Greater Cincinnati. People’s Liberty invests directly in individuals through funding and mentorship, creating a new, replicable model for grantmakers in other cities. Rupert Oldridge, the UK’s most energetic beat boxer and official World Champion in 2015, got the audience on their feet to try out a bit of sound creation and enjoy a daily dose of the best medicine: laughter. There was also a brilliant talk from a financial point of view by Justin Sykes, Managing Director of Innovest Advisory and social financing advisor, who looked at, ‘How Guernsey can become a centre for Financing for Good’. One of the highlights of the event was a talk from radio presenter Ollie Guillou on constructive journalism. He explained how the media needs to be impartial in addressing good and bad and how he feels passionately about giving thinkers and innovators the opportunity to have their voices heard. He said that bad news shouldn’t dominate coverage and explained how it was good that the World’s Boldest Kindness Experiment which recently took place in Guernsey put a spotlight on kindness. During a review of an audit file with an old boss we got into a rather heated debate about the meaning of some accounting standard and its impact on the audit I had completed. He bet me £10 that I was wrong but I refused to accept the bet on this level and argued for £1 (given the ridiculously poor salary he was paying me, even by 1995 standards). I was right and should have had more self-belief. He teased me about only winning £1, but he never challenged me on accounting standards again and I learned to have the courage of my convictions. As an island what should we do more of? Appreciate the island for what it is: beautiful, safe and a place of strong community spirit. What makes you love Guernsey? The relaxed way of life and the lack of commute allowing quality family time.


Invest with Bob Enhance your Income We live in a challenging world for savers When the Bank of England cut interest rates to 0.5% in 2009 it was an emergency measure. Seven years later such rates seem normal. UK interest rates, unbelievably, are looking high compared to some countries and there has even been talk of taking them negative. Countries that have already implemented negative rates have produced some bizarre consequences. A lucky few Danish mortgage customers are even being paid to borrow! This upside-down world has left savers feeling, understandably, unloved. It is a struggle to get excited when you are offered returns as meagre as 8p per year for a hundred pounds in the bank. So how can I enhance my income? There are many options out there and they all have advantages and disadvantages. A good rule of thumb is the higher the return the more significant the catch. You didn’t have to understand banks to know that Icelandic banks paying twice the interest rate of everyone else carried more risk, even if you didn’t know what that risk was. On the other hand, where you understand the details and you are comfortable with them, you can find sensible routes to higher returns. Taking one of our most popular income products as an example, the Huntress Global Income fund, we can highlight the key points where different products tend to vary:

What return should I be thinking of? The Income fund provides a combination of income and capital growth. The current income yield is around 3.5% and the combined return including income and capital gain is called the “total return”. Looking back since the fund’s launch in 2009 the Income fund has delivered an average annual total return of 5.2% which gives you a rough feel for the level of return you might reasonably expect. How easily can I redeem my investment? A key advantage of assets that are traded in financial markets is that they are readily saleable. As such you can request your capital back from the Income fund on any business day and you will receive it five working days later. There is no lock-in or minimum holding period. What will I be charged?

Will my capital value fluctuate?

The annual fee on the fund is 0.75%. When looking at any product it is important to ensure that you are aware of all the charges involved. For funds, the all in fee is often quoted as the total expense ratio (TER) or ongoing charges figure (OCF). For the Income fund this all in figure was 1.16% at the last calculation point. In addition if you invest in the Income fund directly there are no entry or exit charges to consider and you can invest from as little as £5,000.

The assets within the fund are traded in financial markets and as sentiment about the global economy improves and declines the capital value will fluctuate unlike a bank deposit. It is worth bearing in mind that the level of capital volatility can vary significantly between different products and it is important to understand where a product sits in context. The Income fund for example sits at the cautious end of the range offered by Ravenscroft.

Guernsey Dance Schools have been competing in the Dance World Cup since 2009, when it was held in Jersey. Since then Guernsey has been represented at the finals in Sardina, Eurodisney, Austria, Brighton, Portugal and Romania. Dance students from Guernsey competed in the Dance World Cup Qualifier in Jersey between 9th - 12th March 2016. FALLEN TREES TURNED INTO FIREWOOD FOR ELDERLY A walk in the woods sparked a community effort that will give the Bailiwick’s elderly residents free firewood. Volunteers from Louvre Group and Treevolution worked through wind and rain to chop, split and store fallen wood from Le Guet which will eventually be distributed to islanders in need. The initiative has been organised in conjunction with the Environment Department who felled the trees in 2013. Louvre’s Martin De La Mare realised that, with a bit of manpower, the timber could be put to good use. ‘When Louvre assisted with the clearing up of the bathing pools recently I noticed that the opportunity to give the timber that was felled back to the community was missed. Shortly after this, when I was walking with my family at Le Guet, I spotted a large stack of fallen trees and I realised that Louvre could help make this happen,’ explained Mr De La Mare. The timber was removed from Le Guet last month and chopped into manageable logs ready to be stored. Once it has dried

the Louvre team will distribute the firewood to Guernsey’s older and more vulnerable residents.

The Environment Department Field Officer, Marco Tersigni, said: ‘A lot of the wood being cut up comes from six Monterey pine trees which were felled in 2013 due to their poor condition and their location, close to residential housing. We have a policy of retaining most of the dead wood on site to create a habitat to support wildlife, but in this case an exception was made to allow some of the wood to be taken because of the quantity involved. ‘The Environment Services Unit fully supports this community initiative to turn some of the wood into fuel for fires and to make it happen we have worked closely with Louvre volunteers and Chris Stonebridge, a qualified and insured tree surgeon from Treevolution’. Trevolution has donated its time, equipment and expertise to help and Louvre has further supported the activity by covering the cost of fuel and refreshments. Louvre’s staff have previously been involved in clearing the area by the bathing pools. Mr De La Mare is also keen to extend the offer of wood clearing. He would like to hear of anyone who has fallen wood that can be collected and used as firewood for those in need. ‘If we can put the wood back into the community to help those in need of fire fuel the Louvre team is happy to clear fallen trees from people’s property.’

Black Rock’s self-defence classes will help to reduce your chances of being targeted in the first place, and increase your confidence in your ability to act should the worst happen. Josh Ozanne, founder of Black Rock, is a martial arts expert. He’s teaming up with Principal Security to teach self-defence to women aged 16 and over. Josh is keen to stress that gaining confidence is key: ‘It’s not about scaremongering; it’s about making women aware of the situations they can put themselves in and enabling them to break them down and think smart. If you’re completely unprepared, you won’t know how to respond appropriately to the potential or actual threat and you could make things a whole lot worse.’ Guernsey is relatively safe – although it pays not to be complacent. When we leave the island, are we less streetwise than we could be? ‘Absolutely,’ says Josh. ‘Because they feel safe here, people do become complacent and can stand out as they are unaware of the dangers out there. A perpetrator will target people who display that kind of behaviour.’ Young women leaving the island to study in the UK or abroad would clearly benefit from a self-defence course, two levels of which are available, but whether you leave Guernsey regularly or not, why would you take a chance with your personal safety? What you’ll learn first on the level 1 course are avoidance tactics since, as Josh says, ‘There’s a lot you can do to prevent yourself from being targeted by a potential attacker, and you’ll get valuable advice regarding body language and how to increase awareness of your environment and keep safe.’

The second element is legal advice. As a firm, Principal Security is well versed in the laws that guide us regarding self-defence. ‘There are certain principles that you have to adhere to for your use of force to be justified and this is outlined in the level 1 course,’ advises Josh. The course then moves on to elements of conflict management and how to escape as quickly as you can if you are attacked. ‘If you do get into a threatening situation there are lots of techniques to help you to get away at the earliest opportunity. We’ll go through your stance, breakaway techniques and how to use your momentum.’ Pressure point control and variations of strikes are also addressed; if you are able to target vulnerable body areas and pressure points, this can definitely work to your advantage. #03. When we feel threatened, our body goes into automatic response mode. ‘It’s the three Fs: fight, flight or freeze,’ says Josh. ‘If you have the tools to deal with a situation you are less likely to freeze. If someone goes to strike you, you will naturally flinch, but you’ve got to learn where to go from that flinch.’ Being attacked from behind, particularly if a perpetrator is holding both your arms down, will cause most people to panic. And what do you do if an assailant gets you on your back? ‘Most women would push the guy away but

if you pull him closer there are more things you can do to get away. Civilians who don’t have the time or inclination to learn what to do so it becomes an automatic reaction are very vulnerable in such a situation.’ The level 2 course builds upon what is covered in level 1, with more in-depth training, further controls and more complicated scenarios. Black Rock and Principal Security will be running various courses, mainly at weekends, in addition to some evenings. Level 1 can be covered in one day, whilst the next level takes two. ‘We understand that women might feel a bit daunted at first but we’re making it as approachable as possible,’ assures Josh. Bring a friend to partner up with, get together a whole group of girls, but take control of your personal security – forewarned is forearmed after all.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT Black Rock will be joining Principal Security who currently deliver bespoke courses in Conflict Management for businesses. If you’re in a client-facing role you have probably had to deal with stressful or aggravating scenarios. Miscommunication, tone of voice or inappropriate body language can exacerbate any problems. ‘Anyone in a customer-facing role should be trained in conflict management, so that they aren’t inadvertently causing a conflict to escalate or coming across as aggressive,’ Josh explains. Employers in the UK are increasingly requiring their employees to undertake such training – for their own protection as much as for that of their staff.

So with a raft of ideas, including using the phycology of colour and having a mix of seating options for any eventuality, we teamed up with Nicolle Falla of PFA Interiors to give form to these ideas, creating not only at great space to work but a series of meeting rooms individually designed to give choice depending on the person and the situation in which it is to be used and have a little fun along the way. So out of the ideas and input from the staff came the ‘Dining Room’ (our boardroom) complete with its custom built dining table with swinging chairs, large utensils and clock plates.

Having been in the same offices now for 10 years, we knew that the design had to be sympathetic to the listed building and its interior space with its high ceilings and original wooden windows whilst conveying our quality service offering and of course, taking advantage of that amazing view from all of our meeting rooms, reception area and main working space. When we started looking at a new design it became clear that we wanted the offices to communicate something very special to both our candidates and our clients and more importantly make people feel at ease when they come in to see us.

COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY

BLUE is the colour of the mind and is essentially soothing; it affects us mentally, rather than the physical reaction we have to red. Strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft blues will calm the mind and aid concentration. Consequently it is serene and mentally calming. It is the colour of clear communication.

The ‘Library’ was given the same treatment but this time a relaxing blue theme was introduced with high quality velvet furnishings, marble table and a luxurious chaise longue to give a more traditional feel to the space. There is an extra large concealed door from here which opens into an ‘inner library’ which is decorated in a similar way to the adjoining room but with more relaxed seating. This space, when open is particularly useful for larger meetings and is popular with our Clients who interview at our offices. The ‘Snug’ with its golden yellow theme, star light, padded walls and even a golden crayfish called ‘Thermidor’ oddly. We are thrilled with how it has all come together and how well it fulfils the brief / our objectives.

YELLOW. Emotional, positive: Optimism, confidence, self-esteem, extraversion, emotional, strength, friendliness, creativity. The yellow wavelength is relatively long and essentially stimulating. In this case the stimulus is emotional, therefore yellow is the strongest colour, psychologically. The right yellow will lift our spirits and our self-esteem; it is the colour of confidence and optimism.
