UPFRONT. EDITOR'S NOTE

Heritage. Guernsey’s got a bucket of it! The pages of GSY Life this month take a look at the islands’ Heritage. Guernsey has always been a bit of a gem in the British Isles. Some might say of enviable importance throughout history! There have been significant battles over our golden shores but our heritage is not just a military one. Whilst we will be once again be remembering and celebrating on Liberation Day, GSY Life will also be examining some non-military heritage, past, present and future that Guernsey has to offer. We have our first piece from the Guernsey Photography Festival that’s receiving international acclamation. Commemorate Victor Hugo whilst celebrating the Literary Festival and the work of living writers! Highlight the footballing genius of the Chris’s that helps keep the Guernsey goal difference in the black and we’re pleased to announce that we have a lead business feature from the lawyer that dressed down the BBC Breakfast news team about offshore jurisdictions, James Quarmby (if you haven’t seen it Google it; brilliant!). And what could be more Guernsey than the ‘Guernsey’? Astrid takes us through the heritage of this iconic garment and we see the men and women of Guernsey Woollen hard at work! The team of contributors and photography gurus have been penning and snapping food, landscapes, pets and beauty; plenty to delight even the most hard-core Guern among us! So go out, be happy, celebrate and remember, but most importantly go out and make today the great heritage of tomorrow. Simon

UPFRONT. TALK.

13

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY THE GUERNSEY PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL PRESENTS ITS INTERNATIONAL TALK SERIES. Following the success of the 2015 photographers’ talks the Guernsey Photography Festival is launching its 2016 series, tackling subjects such as disability, natural disasters and true crime stories. Festival director Jean-Christophe Godet talks about the impact these series have on the island. When we first started the festival in 2010 we wanted to build on a foundation of bringing together some of the world’s most talented photographers to tell their stories. Originally conceived as a vehicle to inspire and educate Guernsey’s creative community, our series of talks by international photographers and filmmakers has evolved into so much more. It’s a chance to demonstrate the cultural impact that photography has and it has allowed us to talk about some difficult subjects. It gets people out of their comfort zone and provides a better view and understanding of the world and society we live in. Thanks to our sponsor, Specsavers, and in collaboration with the Digital Greenhouse, this year’s talks will feature four acclaimed international photographers and form part of the Festival’s ongoing cultural and educational programme. We are very excited to welcome renowned photographers Sian Davey, Jack Latham, Guillaume Bresson and Helge Skodvin. Sian Davey’s work, ‘Looking for Alice’, focuses on her down-syndrome daughter and won widespread critical acclaim last year. Sian’s work is an investigation of the psychological, social and political landscapes of both herself and those around her. Jack Latham will present his fascinating work, ‘The Sugar Paper Theories,’ which traces an infamous true crime case in Iceland which involved the testimonies of six people who confessed to two murders they had no apparent memory of. Guillaume

Bresson

will

talk

‘Fukushima No-Go Zone’, an ongoing collaborative project with Venezuelan photographer Carlos Ayesta about the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Helge Skodvin will discuss his acclaimed project ‘A Moveable Beast’. Skodvin has won numerous awards as part of the Norwegian press picture of the year as well as the Norwegian advertising picture of the year. He was shortlisted for the 2015 Leica Oskar Barnack Award. The calibre of photographers that we’ve

managed to attract is testament to the reputation of the Guernsey Photography Festival and they’ll provide an exceptional opportunity to find out more about contemporary practice in the world of photography and moving images. Many of the approaches to professional practice that the visiting photographers adopt can be applied to many other sectors including the digital industry. Many of the artists who we invite are at the top of their game and enjoy international respect. Hearing how they generate new ideas and ways of working can be invaluable to anyone who is interested in originating a project of almost any kind. The programme opens on Wednesday 25 May with Sian Davey. Jack Latham’s talk will take place on Wednesday 6 July, Guillaume Bression’s on Wednesday 12 October and Helge Skodvin on Wednesday 23 November.

25th May 2016 - Sian Davey Sian Davey is a photographer with a background in Fine Art and Social Policy. She has run a private Psychotherapy practice for the past 15 years, but has recently ended this work to dedicate her time to her photography practice. Her work is an investigation of the psychological, social and political landscapes of both herself and those around her. Having recently completed her MA in Photography and the Book, she is now currently taking part in the MFA programme at Plymouth University. Sian has been the recipient of numerous awards including two years running the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and the Lens Culture Emerging Photographer Award amongst others and has exhibited internationally. Sian has recently released her first book ‘Looking for Alice’ published by Trolley Books.

The Dean of Guernsey, the Very Revd Tim Barker, will be the officiant of this year’s Liberation Celebrations Service on Monday 9 May 2016. The preacher will be the Catholic Dean of Guernsey, the Reverend Canon Michael Hore. Organisers have paid special attention to providing more seats inside the Town Church for members of the public than in previous years. Members of the public who wish to join in the Liberation Church Service will have the option of either being inside the Town Church or in Market Square that will be covered by a marquee and where the service will be broadcast on to a big screen. Between the Town Church and Market Square, seating will be available for approximately 500 public worshippers. The annual Liberation Church Service, held in the Town Church, is where the dark years of Guernsey’s occupation during 1940-1945 are remembered, where the priceless concept of freedom is celebrated and where the lives of those Guernsey men and women who were part of the fighting in Europe, who stayed in Guernsey, who were deported or who were evacuated are honoured.

PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MONTH PhotographybybyJOHN Jon Le Photography LERay RAY Location ST. ThePETER Reservoir Location: PORT

I studied photography at school, but moved into the fairly niche area of aerial photography a couple of years ago. My initial work was undertaken in and around the UK, but in the last six months I’ve been flying a little closer to home, capturing scenes from the skies above Guernsey and the other Channel Islands. The process of permits and insurance is fairly straightforward, however getting hold of aircraft and pilots takes a little more organisation. The owner of the aeroplane I use has allowed me to remove the cargo doors from the side of the plane. This means I am able to photograph without reflections caused by windows and results In more clean, crisp shots, including some taken vertically beneath the aircraft. A harness and a woolly hat are equally as important as a camera for these flights. Personally, I prefer to take broad landscape shots. These work especially well at altitude over the Island, as I can often capture the whole coastline of Guernsey in one single photograph. When I frame my shot in the viewfinder, the pilot will reduce airspeed and we will circle around a fixed point a couple of times, to ensure I get the best angle with the best possible light. You can see more aerial photos at www.jonlerayphotography.com. #03. APRIL 2016. THE ENHANCE ISSUE.

Meet Deborah and Tuppence...

I’m Deborah Goulding and this is my gorgeous dog Tuppence Goulding. She is a 4 year old Tibetan Spaniel with a russet red coat and an undershot jaw and misaligned bottom teeth which makes her quirkily beautiful. She is originally a rescue dog from Cyprus and came over with her brothers and sisters for rehoming from Cyprus to Jersey. She lives with her two feline brothers Starbee and Jacques. Tuppences’ favourite food is roast Chicken with gravy but she loves boiled pasta or lasagne that we put down to her Mediterranean heritage. She will also eat her brothers cat food if they are not quick enough.

She loves the beach and digging holes in grandpas flowerbeds who is forever finding her stash of buried crusts of bread, biscuits, squeaky toys and even the odd sock! She is a big tail wagger a pleasure to be with! Photography by Mike Brehaut, www.creative.gg

not only to help these young players with their golf games, but help make them positive and rounded individuals who can also use their chosen sport as a life skill moving forward,’ said Mr Sykes. ‘Again ABN AMRO has been fantastic in offering to continue its support of the initiative and we look forward to working them during the season ahead.’ The squad initiative aims to develop the

ensured a steady supply of food to the service which typically gives out 20 food parcels to local families each week. The food bank boxes have proved so popular that they have now been installed at the Waitrose Admiral Park branch. The initiative follows the success of collections held in Waitrose stores nationally across the UK and Channel Islands which saw over 130 tonnes of food donated by customers in 2014 enough to make over 260,000 meals. John Copeland, director of the Guernsey Welfare Service, said: “The response from the people of Guernsey to the food bank has surpassed our expectations. We’ve had a steady stream of food coming in to the service from the Rohais store which when added to our other collection points has enabled us to help even more families who depend on these donations.

YOUNG GOLFERS GIVE BACK TO THE SPORT THROUGH MENTORING INITIATIVE Promising local golfers who benefitted through the Guernsey Golf Development Squad are giving back to the sport through a mentoring initiative. Megan Graham, Hamish Glass and Trystan Perkins will this year help younger golfers named in the 2016 squad improve their game. ‘These three individuals have stood out as not only being excellent golfers, but also proving themselves as positive individuals who make a difference when in a team or group environment in many different and positive ways as leaders,’ said Phil Sykes, one of the Guernsey Golf School’s directors and PGA golf professional. The 2016 squad – the fourth of its kind – was unveiled this week at the Guernsey Golf School. Mr Sykes said that junior golf continued to flourish since the development squad, sponsored by ABN AMRO, was launched in 2013. ‘The ABN AMRO Golf Development Squad helps nurture some of the island’s best young golfing talent. We are looking

talent of the island’s most promising young golfers of all ages and from all golf clubs. They receive free training and coaching from Phil Sykes and Matt Groves, professionals at Guernsey Golf School, and fitness training from Ashley Carter, a professional gym coach at La Grande Mare Gym. They will also be provided with team kits and golf bags and work with local charity, Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG), involving themselves in a number of charitable events over the year ahead and helping at selected golf events, introducing new players into the game..

“The food we distribute is a lifeline for some islanders so it’s wonderful to see such strong support from the local community. We’re always happy to receive gifts of non-perishable food with a long use by date.” Kelly Divall, community liaison officer at Waitrose Rohais, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the donations we’ve received from our customers. The donations help those in Guernsey who need it the most and the Guernsey Welfare Service is an organisation that we’re proud to be able to support.”

WAITROSE FOOD BANK RECEIVES OVER A TON OF DONATIONS Waitrose Rohais customers have donated more than a ton of food in less than six months to a local food bank operated by the Guernsey Welfare Service. The permanent food bank boxes that were installed in the Rohais branch last year are set up at the exit of the branch. They provide customers with the opportunity to donate to the independent charity which works with other local agencies to provide financial and practical support to islanders in need. Donations collected from the boxes have

OPEN CASTLE SWIM FUNDS PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR A Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) has been fitted at the Bathing Pools thanks to funds raised at last year’s Open Castle Swim, sponsored by Saffery Champness. The PAD has been fitted at La Vallette and will be available, at any time, in the event of a cardiac emergency. Last year’s event, organised by the Guernsey Swimming Club, saw record turn-out of more than 200 swimmers, raising £1,250. This was then doubled by sponsor Saffery Champness to cover the entire purchase and fitting of the defibrillator by the Cardiac Action Group (CAG).

25

the support from the Guernsey Swimming Club and Saffery Champness to get this in place. It’s important that equipment like this is accessible to the public and easy to use without the public needing to have received any form of training.”

THE VALLEY TEA ROOMS MAKES A CUPPA FOR MUG

Nick Batiste, managing director of Saffery Champness, said: “The bathing pools are a very busy area in our community and the safety of swimmers is paramount.

Tea lovers have helped the Fermain Valley Hotel raise £1,563.89 for Male Uprising Guernsey.

“It made sense that the money raised at last year’s event should support this initiative. As the sponsor of the Castle Swim, we were very happy to double the total raised to cover all costs and ensure that it was installed and available as soon as possible.”

Defibrillators, which deliver a high energy electric shock to the heart to restore a more stable rhythm, allow someone without safety training to provide potentially lifesaving help until the emergency services can attend the scene of an incident. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10%. The machines use verbal instructions to guide the user through each step and will not deliver a shock unless it is needed.

The Valley Team Rooms donated the value of every cup of coffee or tea sold in March to the male cancer charity. Founder of MUG Trevor Kelham said: ‘The charity has had a fantastic start to the year and this generous donation is typical of the support we receive from individuals and businesses. The Fermain Valley Hotel supported last year’s Beard Up campaign, they also held a Guy Tea in 2015, so we are very grateful to Tim Coates and his team for their latest idea and ongoing generosity.’ Manor Farms also supported the initiative by kindly donating the coffee and hundreds of customers enjoyed a cuppa to help the cause. Tim Coates, Commercial Director of Fermain Valley Hotel, commented: ‘I am continually amazed by the charity’s efforts and feel that supporting their work with our own initiatives is the least we can do. We thank the community for their generosity.’

Gareth Corbett, chairman of the CAG, said: “This equipment is vital for our community and we are very thankful for

Stepping through the doors of No.4 is like walking into wonderland. With an eclectic mix ranging from chrome Rhino head book ends to giant wall hung cutlery, it’s definitely a shop that brings out the magpie in all of us. Night falls. He grazes her cheek, pensive, intent; her face, calm, moonlit, might be asleep apart from her toes which curl on the bed; her right hand fidgets on his bull neck, as if her mind is elsewhere. Klimt’s wife asks him at dinner where their counterpane has gone.

FRENCH LESSONS Bathsheba Lockwood Brook, Derbyshire

Between the moon lit motorway from Dijon to Calais we found a cat, dying. Its bones lit lithe in the strip split street light, heart still hanging in the balance. We unstuck it limp from the tarmac, toes tangled tightly. My schoolroom French knew enough to say it was un chat, called it mon cheri, and even tried je t’aime. Spilled sweet nothings until it loosened, stiffened, and turned my mouthings mort. Crossing the ferry, the wake whipped away my nouns, bore up the verbs and left behind a breeze, white whiskered, dancing.

2nd place: SILENCE Heather Després, Guernsey

Silence is not golden. Only a fool stores his jewels as teeth and Only a cat can wake from sleep and still yawn. I yearn for words to co-exist In the space between my mouth and yours. Like rain drops tumbling, Searching for the perfect path To glide down the window screen.

Guernsey Post is delighted to announce the release of a set of stamps to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Toilers of the Sea, written by Victor Hugo (stamp issue date – 6 May) Victor Hugo came to Guernsey in 1855 as a political exile. A few months later he bought Hauteville House, which was to be his home for the next fourteen years and where he spent almost every morning in his ‘look-out’ at the top of the house. From Hauteville House, Hugo saw ships coming and going, sometimes ships in distress, and shipwrecks. In 1859 he spent a holiday in Sark where his son, Charles, tangled with an octopus, which gave him the idea for a novel; in 1864 Hugo began to write The Toilers of the Sea.

This novel is about a shy sea-farer, Gilliatt, a man of French origin who had lived most of his life in Guernsey. We encounter Gilliatt at the start of the story when the pretty Déruchette traces his name in the snow. He is smitten. Déruchette is the niece of Lethierry, a shipbuilder who has staked his fortune on building the Durande, a steamship that will ply between Guernsey and St Malo every week. The captain of the Durande is Clubin, a man of good reputation. One day the tragic news reaches Lethierry that the Durande has been wrecked on the Roches Douvres. In his grief Lethierry promises that the man who salvages the engines will marry Déruchette. Hearing this, Gilliatt sails alone in his old Dutch sloop to the Douvres where he finds the Durande suspended between two perpendicular rocks. Gilliatt secures a safe mooring for his vessel and then scales the Great Douvre where he finds shelter. At night-fall a great black circle revolves around his head – a halo of darkness made up of a flock of seabirds returning, only to find their home occupied. The birds become his companions over the weeks as Gilliatt toils to salvage the engines. The operation comes close to failure when a violent storm starts to break up the Durande. Gilliatt seizes an axe and with heroic skill shapes the timbers so that they fall in purposeful fashion, creating a breakwater that shields the engines and his sloop. Exploring, Gilliatt dives into the waters of a cave and surprises a devil fish that grasps him with its tentacles and threatens to kill him. Gilliatt skilfully kills the monster. In the cave Gilliatt finds the corpse of Clubin, together with a fortune belonging to Lethierry. Far from being an honest captain, Clubin had hatched a cunning plan to wreck the Durande on the Hanois reef close to Guernsey. There, having faked his death, he had planned to swim to Guernsey and thence to journey to South America with Lethierry’s money. Clubin’s plan ”Clubin’s plan failed, a navigational error in the fog brought the Durande not to the Hanois but onto the Douvres, many miles from Guernsey. Eventually Gilliatt salvages the engines and sails back to Guernsey. Lethierry is overjoyed, Déruchette is to marry Gilliatt. He, however, discovers that she has fallen in love with the Rev Ebenezer Caudray and makes no claim on her. Gilliatt facilitates the marriage of the couple and helps the newly-weds to sail away on the Cashmere. From Gild-Holm-Ur, his rock seat at Houmet Paradis, Gilliatt watches the Cashmere sail northwards. He remains motionless and is eventually engulfed by the rising tide. Daria first started making bralettes due to her always existing interest in lingerie and the way it can completely change how you feel about yourself... They began as really simple designs made out of fabric that wasn’t necessarily made to be used for lingerie but, thanks to social media such as Instagram and Facebook, people started to notice and comment on how much they liked them. With interest increasing, her designs became more interesting and the quality much better, and before she knew it Daria had her first customer. After having sold a handful of bralettes, a former Sixth Form student, Christa Cahill, who is studying at Leeds University, contacted Daria to offer her a place in The Leeds RAG Fashion Show. This event is one of the biggest and most anticipated on the Leeds University Union calendar and features the talented young designers that will be the future of the industry. Daria’s outfits were a great success and she received some great feedback from the show.

Next for the talented young designer is a placement at Arts University Bournemouth studying textile design starting in September. Working long hours to pay for university doesn’t leave Daria much time for designing but she has started work on her summer

collection. With the experience university will bring and hopefully some placements at a lingerie companies it’s looking great for the young Sarnian. With such a steep learning curve Daria is thankful her “lingerie guru” Mel from Cockadoodle for help with sourcing material and general advice on ranges. Daria would like to build her brand with the main objective of not sacrificing the appearance of underwear for comfort and not having pretty underwear that you are dying to take off at the end of the day. Daria is passionate about her designs, being involved in all the stages she not only designs and makes them but models the finished articles. The future is looking exciting for they young Guernsey girl, hard work and passion will go a long way to helping her achieve her goal.

BARRE TRIBE

THE DAY THE MEN CAME TO BARRE...

fitness

Have you ever wondered what your partner gets up to when they head out to their weekly fitness class..? Or, are you the one who raves about your workout telling your partner just how tough it is..

Sinead, Barre Tribe

We all know the importance of exercise and when you find a work-out that you love nothing get’s in the way of your weekly fix. For some it’s goes beyond keeping fit, exercising can shift your awareness away from stress, worries and insecurities and bring about a balanced, confident and joyful state of mind. BarreTribe recently hosted it’s first ‘Bring your Man’ to barre class. In total 12 apprehensive men were dragged along. The class began with a warm up, then we used light weights and high repetition moves, combined with pressups and planks to sculpt and tone the arms. From there we moved over to the barre for thigh and seat work, finishing off with abs and a cool down. These controlled isolated and isometric moves are intense and are sure to make you

sweat and shake! The guys were great sports for coming to BarreTribe. The hour long class gave them a glimpse into their partners past time and the opportunity to try something that perhaps they wouldn’t of. There is no doubt the men are strong, but the beauty of this ‘class swap’ was that it brought to light areas that perhaps they needed to work on. In this particular instance balance and flexibility proved to be the biggest challenge for the men. As for the ladies they certainly appreciated their other half’s support and interest by agreeing to come to class, plus they achieved their goals by proving to their men how tough barre is and just how strong and flexible they are! So, why not embrace a new challenge and try a workout swap with your partner, not only will you get to spend valuable time sweating it out together, but its also a great opportunity to learn more about your physical weaknesses and strengths. You never know you might just love it!

MIXED FEELINGS IN MISANO Round 1 of the Blancpain Sprint Series with Lamborghini saw mixed results for me. The Italian whether wasn't quite what I had in mind. Torrential rain saw the North Italian circuit to be very challenging, that and the fact practice was in complete darkness. The poor conditions and a harsh BOP (balance of performance) being issued by the Governing Body of Motorsport (due to Lamborghini's five minute win in Daytona earlier in the year) resulted in all seven Lamborghini's qualifying at the back of the grid. Race one started with me sat on the grid in 39th position. Darkness of the night, torrential rain and in a car I had done only a handful of laps in around Misano. I knew if I wanted to impress Lamborghini I was going to have to do something rather spectacular. As the lights went out and the heart palpitations stopped I realised I had a very strong car. Each lap I was picking off cars in front of me. I managed a total of 17 cars in my 35 minute stint taking me from 39th on the grid to 22nd. I handed over the car to my team mate Davide Valsecchi to finish our first Blancpain GT race. Unfortunately we didn't make it to race two. With Sunday's race being bright sunshine and perfect race conditions my confidence got the better of me (I had achieved 5th fastest lap and fastest Lamborghini on the grid in race 1) and I pushed the car beyond its limit, I lost control on the high speed right hander putting the car in the wall at just under 180mph. I move on to Brands Hatch, May 7th & 8th and take with me the experience of Misano and the huge lesson learnt.

How did you originally get started in Yoga?

hugely improving your quality of well - being and sleep.

I began practicing Yoga over 10 years ago and became more regular with my practice whilst living and working in Singapore. During that time I was working in the finance industry, and became very aware of how modern day stress can affect our mind and body. Suffering from back pain (at times quite servere), I decided that it was time to gain a deeper understanding of yoga, and it’s eight limbs. The feeling I had when I left class fascinated me, and I needed to know why!

I’m Not Flexible—Can I Do Yoga?

How Is Yoga Different From Stretching or Other Kinds of Fitness?

It’s a common misconception that you need to be flexible to do yoga. It’s not hard to see how this myth came to be, especially in age of Facebook and Instagram. Almost every picture that you see on social media of someone doing a yoga pose shows off amazing flexibility. But putting your foot behind your head or doubling your body over in a backbend are really not the norms for your average yogi. Nor is extreme flexibility the ultimate goal of yoga. You still may not be able to do

Awareness is key. For your body to open and ‘stretch’ creating flexibility on and off the mat, there is a process. To start with Yoga encourages you to find a deeper and more fluid sense of breath, allowing your mind to become calm and still, which enables your central nervous system to relax and move out of the ‘fight or flight mode’. With practice, Yoga allows a much deeper sense of grounding, releases blockages, gain’s strength and tones your body, whilst listening and respecting your limits. A Yoga class will often finish with savasana, where you will relax with full awareness - allowing your body to unwind the layers and encouraging a deeper and more nourishing quality of rest. Yoga reduces stress considerably and allows your body to heal, whilst

the versions of the poses that end up on inspiration boards on Pinterest, but you will be amazed at what you can do with a consistent yoga practice. The benefits of a regular practice are endless. What Do I Need to Begin? An open mind! Yoga really can be for everyone. Yoga Elements Guernsey offers a variety of Yoga to suit all abilities and preferences. At whatever stage you are within your practice, we invite you to join us; to take the time to turn your attention inwards to create the space within your mind and body, allowing for the incredible journey of Yoga to unfold.

TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE, TIME TO BECOME THAT BETTER YOU! The famous words that come out of many peoples mouths are; “I know what I should be doing, but I’m not doing it” Why with all these amazing benefits exercise has to offer and the fact they have been proven to help you from now into later life, would you not wish to make the effort to get up and give it a go? Do not sit back and let your muscles deteriorate or your joints seize up, keep training and live a longer, healthier and happier life. Happiness in my opinion is the most important thing in life! WORDS BY NICHOLE SWEETSUR

C Stonelake & Co, a much-loved local business, has started a new chapter in its long history of selling cosmetics, fragrances and toiletries. Known locally as Stonelakes, the shop has a 100-year heritage in Guernsey but is moving with the times with a new location in Commercial Arcade and a website in the pipeline.

In 1911 founder Cecil Stonelake started selling perfume, toiletries and gentlemen’s shaving products from a shop on Smith Street. A second premises followed along with a thriving mail order business selling fragrances – proving itself to be ahead of the beauty e-tail businesses of today. Not to be confused with Stonelakes on the Bridge, C Stonelake & Co is a family firm and in 2015 the fourth generation took over the business. Cecil’s greatgrandson Dave Herschel and his wife Alex made the decision to move the shop and it re-opened in Commercial Arcade in December last year. With a traditional sign and a family name steeped in Guernsey history the shop has a lot of heritage but is far from old fashioned. The boutique is crammed full of niche brands and beauty favourites. In fact it’s a real treasure trove, with lots of hard-to-resist treats waiting to

be discovered. Bomb Cosmetics – a handcrafted natural collection of bath bombs and pretty soaps is just one example. Made in the UK, the fragrance combinations and witty shapes bring a bit fun to bathtime.

Hearth and Heritage is another Brit brand with a quirky approach. Gin and tonic lip balm and soaps are a surefire hit with every girl who loves cocktail hour. This collection is exclusive to C Stonelake & Co in Guernsey, just like cult brand Sting In The Tail. With retro designs depicting sporting scenes, the soaps and shower gels are fragranced with natural ingredients which are mainly sourced in the UK. Cyclists will love the Muscle Rub and Hack Wax (a manly version of hand cream). The Roger & Gallet name conjures up images of French parfumeurs and with two centuries of fragrance history behind the name it is the perfect fit for C Stonelake & Co. Expect pretty packaging, classic soaps and delightful scents. Roger & Gallet may have created their first fragrance in 1862 but scents like the single note Bois D’Orange feel very modern and fresh. Other new ranges include Orla Kiely wash bags, Sweet Cecily and Algologie, but don’t fret, old favourites like Vichy, Elizabeth Arden and hard-to find fragrances are still on sale.

Men aren’t neglected either, with shower and shaving essentials by Blue Beard’s Revenge, Taylors and the famous Mayfair barber brand Geo F Trumper. This is an easy place to shop for birthday gifts for husbands, brothers and boyfriends. The beauty boutique promises shoppers the kind of old-fashioned customer service that Cecil Stonelake insisted on. It’s just the place to shop for out-ofthe-ordinary gifts that can’t be found anywhere else on the island, or just to pick up a treat for some bathtime bliss. It’s good to know that the 100 year-old name in Guernsey beauty is set for another successful century ahead. C Stonelake & Co, 27 Commercial Arcade, St Peter Port. Tel: 01481 720053

ISLAND FM UPDATE Latest news and events from the islands’ leading music radio station.

Commercial Manager

As Commercial Manager at Island FM, it was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to introduce the Island FM Commercial Team. Having worked in Radio for over a decade, I’ve worked in other Markets and come across some interesting characters and less than desirable ‘Sales’ environments in my time; at Island FM we, by far, have the best Commercial Team of Account Managers that any Radio Station, worldwide, would be proud of. These Ladies know the meaning of integrity: we don’t sell ‘stuff’, we sell solutions. In a market this size, no one can

MEET THE COMMERCIAL TEAM afford to be complacent. Service levels have to remain at a high standard, consistently, without doubt. Relationships need to be created and valued. Marketing solutions need to be new and innovative. Our product needs to deliver and these days, often, you are only given one opportunity to do so. This Team understands that; you have to work with integrity. We have to sell campaigns that work, because we, like every other business, want you to buy our product again. Referrals, Recommendations and Repeat Business; all elements that any business is striving to achieve. Many years ago my first Station Director felt the need to remind me: ‘the only time success comes before work is in the dictionary’ – he wasn’t wrong. Passion and respect for our product, the ability to choose our attitudes each day and good old fashioned hard work, are the key elements of our success. Our Product? Well it’s not a tough demand to be passionate about Island FM; what an incredible brand, known and listened to throughout the Bailiwick by 32,000 Adults per Week. Now that’s powerful. Island FM and the Presenters that deliver the Radio Station to the communities of the Bailiwick, feature as part of our Listeners daily routines, they have a relationship. #04. MAY 2016. HERITAGE ISSUE.

Our Listeners know that James Bentley is running a Half Marathon this year and enjoy the updates on his training progress, Richard Harding has an avid interest in island politics, as a St Peter Port Douzenier and is our French speaking Presenter, learning the island's ancient Guernsey French and Carl Ward is the History of the Station and is still remembered by our Listeners for his 80’s mullet, our Listeners also know that Carl and wife Louise now have a beautiful daughter Scarlett. We have loyal Listeners who are actively listening, which in turn provides the Commercial Team with an advertising platform to help businesses, throughout all industries, achieve their Marketing Objectives and Grow. Let me introduce you to the Island FM Commercial Team. Welcoming Lucy Prevel: Account Manager – Lucy is our most recent addition to the Commercial Team. With a history in Customer Service and the enthusiasm to increase her connect on a face to face basis with clients, which this position will offer Lucy, we are excited to have her on board. Throughout the interview process, Lucy continued to deliver an outstanding level of professionalism, but even more importantly Lucy is a grounded individual, with a trustworthy and genuine personality

who will contribute to the high standards of credibility and integrity we already employ at Island FM. Lucy is a mother of two and also owns her own business: Party Tots. Lucy can see through the eyes of a parent and a business owner, I think these life experiences are part of the reason that you automatically feel comfortable in Lucy’s company. Amanda Prigent: Senior Account Manager – Amanda is a proud mother of two, and can often be found on the sidelines of the football pitch, supporting son Sam, who is already a character beyond his years. Amanda left school and pursued working in Trades, starting an apprenticeship in Plumbing. I’m not sure why Amanda chose to change paths into Sales, but it is of great benefit to us that she did. Amanda joined the Island FM Team 7 years ago, after experiencing Sales in both Retail and Print Advertising. Amanda’s 7 years at Island FM has provided her with, not only, a great understanding of our product but also means she offers her clients a long term relationship and with that comes an excellent understanding of each business she works with; therefore allowing Amanda to provide bespoke campaigns to achieve her clients individual Marketing Objectives. Rebecca Fallaize: Account Manager – Becca first joined Island FM as Station Coordinator, 10 years ago, with a short break to pursue a career in parenting, Becca and husband Ben now have two children. Becca returned to Island FM and joined the Commercial Team, over 2 years ago. Offering a wealth of knowledge; Becca’s marketing campaigns often include a variety of unique promotions and events for her clients and she is never afraid to go the extra mile. Congratulations to Becca who has just achieved Local Residency: Welcome to being a Guern! Jackie Swan: Account Manager – Jackie was born in America where she qualified and worked as a Dolphin Trainer. Having moved to Guernsey 4 years ago to settle down with her local husband and two gorgeous fur babies, Brody and Hooper, Jackie was seeking a new challenge and was recommended to us by one of my clients. Jackie was a delight to recruit into the Commercial Team almost 2 years ago. In that time, Jackie, has absorbed the Radio Industry in her stride and now works with an endless array of different industries and business types, creating successful Marketing Campaigns and excellent repeat business with a

number of businesses that were new to the concept of radio advertising. Sally Chaddock: Commercial Manager – I was born in Guernsey, therefore lucky enough to have a License in this beautiful island. I moved to New Zealand with my family at the age of 15 (very brave parents to take 3 teenage girls to the other side of the world). I quickly realized New Zealand did not offer the job opportunities that I had once been used to in Guernsey. So I went back into Education, and after 2 years, I basically fell into Radio. At 18 years old I found the love of my life: My Career, the Radio Industry. I moved back to Guernsey, leaving the family behind, with every intention of returning to New Zealand after 9 months: well almost 7 years later I’m still here at Island FM. Helping businesses grow and working with incredible clients; I consider myself very lucky, but the pleasure I get from my life at Island FM wouldn’t be half as enjoyable if it wasn’t for the talented team of people I am surrounded by every day.

GUERNSEY’S G OA L K E E P I N G ELITE. A story of inspiration and guidance traded back and forth surrounds some of Guernsey’s goalkeeping elite. words by Matt Nichols IT sTArTs WITH Chris Hamon, Guernsey FC’s goalkeeping coach who came close to turning professional. Then there is Chris Tardif, whose professional career included Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford United. It was Hamon who inspired Tardif to become a goalkeeper, when the former was first a player then a coach at Vale Recreation.

had lost my passion for football,” Hamon explained. “Tony Vance asked me if I’d be GFC’s goalkeeping coach but I said no at first. I didn’t want to promise I would then want to give it up later. “But my passion for goalkeeping is as strong as ever. Tardy asked if I’d do some sessions for him before the Muratti, and if I’d do GFC pre-season. I felt the atmosphere of a dressing room again and got the bug back. I went back to Tony and he was happy for me to join.” Following in their footsteps is Hamon’s son James, who is plying his trade as a young professional with League Two Exeter City - although he’s currently on loan at Hayes & Yeading United in the National League South.

“It wasn’t something I envisaged,” Tardif said. “I enjoyed playing in midfield when I was younger. But Hammy was my inspiration - and still is.” “Because of my experience, I knew how important it was to introduce goalkeeper specific sessions so I did them myself,” Hamon added. “You could tell early on that Tardy was going to be a very good goalkeeper. I followed his career with great interest.” Tardif moved back home in time for the formation of Guernsey FC in 2011 and returned the favour by coaxing his mentor back into football. “I left Rec before GFC started because I

“When Tardy came home from Portsmouth for the summer my dad would put sessions on for him,” James said. “I always wanted to join in. “I also went with Dad to training at Rec and he would take shots at me and teach me the basics of goalkeeping. When the first team arrived they would smash shots in and I’d try to stop them. “They are both really helpful. When I trialled at Southampton it didn’t work out because mentally I wasn’t ready. When I went to Exeter I had grown up and was ready for what was to come. Tardy played a big part in that - training with him, pushing me and toughening me up mentally helped me get where I am now.”

LIFESTYLE. FOOTBALL.

Tardif is a great reference point for Hamon junior when it comes to advice. “I can put words of wisdom his way in terms of the professional game and making the transition from Guernsey,” Tardif said. “It’s harder off the pitch than on it. In Guernsey, life is easy and everything is there for you. “I was staying with a new family in the middle of Portsmouth. I had to take a bus, to get a train to get another bus just for training. “Other players had parents at games, and obviously it was harder for mine to do that. Then I would be stuck by myself at weekends when everyone else went home. It was tough but good for me. “Modern technology allows us to speak regularly. We recently chatted about his loan. I said it was good to play senior football, even at a lower level, because you put your training to good use rather than sitting on the bench on Saturday. You could be the best trainer but hardly play, so no-one will know about you.” Hamon senior decided being a professional wasn’t for him. But that doesn’t mean he can’t be another guiding hand. “I moved home because I could have a full-time job and still play football,” he said. “I didn’t have that drive to make it professionally - Tardy and James do.

“The difference now is technology means James is not cut off from the family like I was.” Further guidance came in GFC’s first season, when James stopped playing to concentrate on his other love - golf. But he made a U-turn thanks to wise words from his dad. “To be a golf pro you need so much luck and the financial side makes it even harder,” said Hamon senior. “You need to live as well as fund your career. He did a business plan for it and realised it wasn’t realistic. “Or he could play for GFC, which could put him in the shop window as he had the ability to make it. “If he has a good football career he can fund a golf career when he retires, plus as a footballer he will have time to play a lot. In football, you get paid no matter what the result.” So there you have it - one inspires and advises the next, and the tables are turned. “It’s nice it has gone full-circle between the three of us,” Tardif said. “Maybe when he retires, James will come back to help bring on the next generation.” Photography by Guernsey FC

The ladies in the factory hard at work.

A STITCH IN TIME... WORDS BY ASTRID MITCHISON

Think of a key fashion piece and the traditional Guernsey jumper is unlikely to be the first item to spring to mind. However, this iconic piece of knitwear is seeing a resurgence in popularity, with celebrities including Kate Moss and Ben Fogle proudly sporting the unisex kit. In fact, the popular adventurer & broadcaster has even confessed to owning something of a collection, stating, “The sweater with which I am most obsessed is the iconic Guernsey. I have half-a-dozen in various colours, although blue is the officially recognised colour.”

The traditional Guernsey jumper, or “Gansey” as it was originally known, has its origins in the Island’s fishing community and dates back to the 16th century. The close stitches of twisted (to make it stronger) navy blue wool were hand-knitted by fishermen’s wives in order to protect them from the harsh elements including sea spray and rain, thanks to a special coating which makes the wool both warm and waterproof. Gussets under the arms and at the neck as well as splits at the hem allowed for ease of movement when wearing the practical garment. The pattern was passed down through the generations and the piece has even played its part as cupid amongst Islanders. Prospective wives would traditionally demonstrate their skills in creating ornate patterns on the garments as a way of attracting potential husbands. Likewise, families could make and sell Guernseys to supplement their income. Today, the jumpers are machine made but retain much of the original design, with the final stitching on the neck and cuffs completed by hand.

An old photo of a local Guernsey man churning butter in his Guernsey!

rope ladder in the rigging, the raised seam at the shoulder represents a rope and the garter stitch panel is supposedly inspired by breaking waves. Historically, jumpers from different parishes and families had their own unique design, in the same way that Scottish clans are recognisable by their tartan although the sad reason behind this was to help identify the bodies of fishermen lost at sea when they were washed ashore. There were plain “working” Guernseys which were relatively quick (taking an estimated 84 hours) & easy to produce, along with more ornate examples which were saved for special occasions. Practically considered national costume, a Guernsey jumper was featured in the BBC project, “A History of the World in 100 Objects” in 2010. The 1851 edition of the Oxford English Dictionary included the term, Guernsey, in reference to the knitwear and the design was much copied throughout coastal communities across the British Isles. Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots were both said to have owned Guernsey knitwear. Its maritime links don’t stop with the Island’s fishing community. It is said that Guernsey jumpers were worn at the Battle of Trafalgar upon Admiral Nelson’s recommendation and were used

LIFESTYLE. FASHION.

in the British Royal Navy’s 19th century uniform. The links with the British Armed Forces continue into the 21st century, with the British Armoured Division placing an order featuring the Desert Rat insignia for troops in Iraq in 2006. Following in the footsteps of heritage British brands such as Burberry, Mulberry and Aquascutum, Guernsey jumpers are also a surprisingly popular fashion choice for those in the Far East with Japan currently the biggest market in the world for the jumper and accounting for more than 70% of sales. It’s thought that the authenticity, longevity and high quality of the jumpers are among the reasons for its popularity in a culture known for the latest gadgets & technology. In fact, demand is so high that producers are struggling to keep up. Along with other iconic fashion items such as Panama hats, the hand-knitting skills required in crafting Guernsey jumpers are dying out, with younger generations opting to work instead in the more lucrative finance sector. There are currently just twenty-five hand-knitters working to fulfil demand. In everyday Island life today, Guernseys are probably most commonly spotted on the popular Guernsey Ted yet the sturdy jumpers can last for decades and are still often handed down through generations of a family. From the pages of Vogue to billboards on the Tokyo subway, it can’t be denied that the traditional Guernsey jumper has come a long way from its humble origins as a staple garment in fishermen’s wardrobes.

arount then. You would also sleep on a bed made from springs, much different to the soft matresses we sleep on today. All of Nell’s clothes were hand made by her Mother, who would also sew on patches to cover up the holes, so that they could be worn time and time again. She recalls how the cost of living was much lower then! Her first family car was bought for just £12 and her house, in about 1952, for about £2300. She speaks about life before the war and how carefree it was, however when the war hit her life dramatically changed. ‘Life was harder back then’. She spoke about how she became a Girl Guide at 17 years old and that she constantly spent time helping others and camping however when the Second World War broke out Nell remained on Guernsey. ‘The Germans were everywhere and they would take everything from us, even our cars’. ‘I hid my radio up the chimney once so they couldnt find it’ she said chuckling.

Meet Nell, at nearly 97 years old Nell has lived through one World War, the Occupation, the Liberation and so much more! GSYlife were interested to hear her stories of when she was a young, carefree girl and and how different Guernsey was back then, we were lucky enough to be invited to Nell’s house to hear all about them .

Once war was over it was back into a care free world again. Her favourite years were the 50’s and 60’s when she could dance all the time to Rock and Roll music. At this time she had been married a few years and tells us how she was working for a tomato farm but when the oil ran out they changed this into a flower shop and then into a cafe. ‘I loved making cakes for everyone’ she

says. ‘I still get asked now what happened to my tea rooms’. She still has fond memories of going to the cinema at Northside. ‘Thruppence it was for a seat at the front, sixpence for a seat at the back and if a guy spent one and six pence to take you on the top seat, you knew he liked you’ she laughed. Even with her 97th birthday coming up in August, Nel is still very active and doing what she loves, visiting her 5 great grandchildren and going to church. So imagine life without all the things we take for granted now, how different it would be.

From outings to the cinema at Northside to rollerblading on a Saturday Nell told us all about how Guernsey was a completely different place to what it appears today. She told us that as a young girl living in the 1920’s in Guernsey, children were pretty much care free. ‘Unlike children now who have to think and worry about things, we would just go outside to the park and all play together’ she said. They would play hide and seek, spin the top, kick the tin, the list continuted, always outside and always in the street. ‘You see cars weren’t an issue back then’. Not only was playing outside different to today but the houses were not centrally heated, no hot water on tap, nor TV, X boxes or anything that our generation take for granted. Nell explained how her family were lucky enough to have a bath once a week, normally on a Friday, right next to the fire so you wouldnt get cold. When the winter hit you would have to go to bed in many layers, no heated blankets were

FRESH BLOOD ENSURES LEGACY OF HISTORIC GENTLEMEN’S CLUB With a young president at the helm, a lasting memorial of Guernsey’s wartime heritage is being enjoyed by a new generation .

dinners to mark relevant anniversaries. And while the club maintains an all-male membership, much of the social side is not exclusive in that way.

Words by TOM BRADSHAW

The club was the brainchild of Lt-Colonel Thomas Hutchesson, who had recognised the importance of the veterans being able to get together socially to share their wartime experiences, and the role that sport could play as therapy.

Lying in the shadow of the magnificent 19th century architecture of Elizabeth College is a far lesser known aspect of The Grange’s rich history. Just across the street from the school’s grand entrance is a modest listed building setback from the road called Warwick House. Likely overlooked by many passers-by, this is home to The Guernsey Sporting Club, which almost a century after its inception still remains as a memorial to the Guernseymen of D Company 6 Royal Irish Regiment who fought in the First World War. But today it is much more than that, with a recent influx of young members bringing a contemporary relevance to the traditional values of this historic gentlemen’s society. As can be expected it has a great social side, with the well frequented bar in the historic clubhouse and a busy events calendar with BBQs, sports days and

Alongside the socialising is an everincreasing charitable element driven by its membership.

With an ongoing nod to its military roots, today’s members are also firmly focussed on furthering its legacy of encouraging sport as a social engager and being a force for good in the community as a whole. Current president Ed Jenkins, 36, said: ‘I am so keen for the club to flourish to ensure the legacy continues. We want to raise the profile in a very positive way for the island by associating with our military history and maintaining the values of our founders, but ultimately looking forward and not back. ‘I also see the club as a mark of prestige – if someone is a member I want them to be proud of that and that they have joined for the right reasons.’ #04. MAY 2016. THE HERITAGE ISSUE.

Immediate past president Alan Cross, a retired Elizabeth College teacher has been a member for almost 40 years, and has spent much of that time researching and documenting the club’s history. Having served Alan as vice president, Ed took over the leadership of the club in 2013. Already a member for several years, the private banker set out to build on his progress in inspiring a new generation of interest. In turn this has afforded Alan more time in his role as club archivist to preserving its historical legacy. Ed, who had been introduced to the club by a friend shortly after moving to the island, said: ‘I immediately fell in love with the place. It was a hidden gem – an oasis in the middle of St Peter Port that not many people knew about. But it is fair to say the club had somewhat lost its way – it had become more about the socialising and lost touch with its roots.’ Soon after joining he took a seat on the committee and one of his early initiatives was to establish new members’ evenings. ‘We’ve started to attract young professionals and more interest from the working population in general, bearing in mind that a lot of our existing members were retired. ‘Our

interested in the historical significance of the club. A lot of my generation know people that have fought in modern day conflicts so can relate to the experiences of returning servicemen. Our new members are very keen that we project the right image of the club and do our bit to help.’

ownership of the historic premises during Alan’s term after reconstituting as a company limited by guarantee in 2011. The move was driven by club member Advocate Russell Clark to resolve conveyance issues that for the latter half of the 20th century had led to some dispute about who owned it.

Alan’s archives pay tribute to the legacy left by Lt-Colonel Hutchesson.

On close inspection of Warwick House the club’s heritage is very apparent – an aluminium plate on the front railings and flag regularly flown at first storey level both display an Irish harp among their insignia. Venture inside and the building is steeped in the sense of patriotism, camaraderie and soldierly pride. Alongside the bar it features a clubroom and snooker room with two full-size tables. There is also selfcontained office space and a residential flat which are rented out.

‘He was the driving force behind the formation of this club. Otherwise it would have likely remained a regimental association with an annual dinner. ‘He was clearly a character with great foresight who realised that Great War veterans needed to be able to get together and talk about what they had been through. He recognised that sport was a great outlet for troubled minds.’ Throughout the latter 20th century, much of the club’s focus had been about playing sport. This remains significant to this day, with members involved in cricket, snooker and indoor bowls fixtures to name just a few. But Alan and Ed have instigated a new dimension of also helping others into sport. The club actively supports local fencing and a number of other institutions.

Ed said: ‘It is just a nice place to walk into as it’s a very impressive building and a friendly likeminded membership. There is a great sense of camaraderie among our members.’

In recent years the it has also sought to strengthen links with the armed forces and supporting associated charities like Help for Heroes. It also helps fund the annual visits of the Chelsea Pensioners and Ghurka regiment on Liberation Day. Another commitment of Ed’s during his time as president is preserving the upkeep of Warwick House. This follows the club having successfully reclaimed

GSY LIFE TOP TIP MAY 2016

Airtel-Vodafone’s Head of Marketing, Peter Zunino, reviews the latest addition to the iPhone family, the iPhone SE

Anybody who owned an iPhone 5 or 5S will immediately feel at home with the SE, and there will no doubt be plenty of customers who miss the feel and manageability of this smaller handset since Apple decided to go big with the 6 and 6 Plus. However is a 4 inch smartphone really cutting it in 2016? As a rather fat fingered fellow who only relatively recently ditched the BlackBerry for an iPhone 6, screen size does feel a bit compromised and can make tapping away a bit of a challenge. Although, while this is the lightest iPhone currently available it is also the thickest which makes it easy to grip and fits easily into any pocket. Ok so I’ve kicked the tyres, what’s it like when you look under the bonnet? Apple have done well to incorporate 3 generations into one device as a combination of the 5S, 6 and 6S parts. It’s got a solid battery life compared to the 6S and performance seems better than the 5S, so while it may be small it packs plenty of punch. It may not have had the fanfare of many other iPhone launches, but with today’s technology in yesterday’s design it’s certainly likely to have a broad appeal for 5 and 5S users as well as first time iPhone buyers who might be looking at a comparably priced Android. Available in 16GB and 64GB models in range of colours and with prices starting from just £20.90 per month including an airtime plan, it’s a great option for people looking for a smaller and less expensive iPhone. Pop in store and see us for a test drive. Price correct at time of going to print.

Matt’s Top Tip from Airtel-Vodafone

Is there a fail safe way to avoid data roaming charges when abroad? You would expect that turning data roaming off on your handset would do exactly what is says on the tin. However we have heard of instances where the handset itself has not recognised this. Best advice is to ensure you install the latest software downloads on your handset. As an absolute safeguard, remove the APN (Access Point Name) address in your settings, which will disconnect the gateway that allows your phone to access cellular data.

On an iPhone for example, go to Settings-Mobile DataMobile Data Options-Mobile Data Network. See screen shot. Then delete the APN address. It’s worth making a note of the APN address in your Notes perhaps so you can pop it back into your handset when your return to the island.

PROPERTY

Expert Analysis

Alex Ford, Managing Director After working in the property industry in Guernsey for a number of years Alex acquired Sarnia Estate Agents and has used his extensive catalogue of contacts and reputation to provide unparalleled client satisfaction.

FIRST TIMERS With a steady start to the year and an air of confidence returning to the local property market, there are signs of hope for the many First Time Buyers looking to get on the housing ladder. Proposals have been put to the new deputies elect laying out the a draft proposal. This will be recommended to the States early in the new term for the trial of a States funded deposit loan scheme for first time buyers. The Guernsey First Time Buyers’ Deposit Loan Scheme could work as follows: The States would put aside £3m to fund the trial. There are various options for funding, but use of funds from the States Bond may be appropriate. The States would lend up to a maximum of 10% of the purchase price of the property, repayable over period of up to 20 years. It is acknowledged that States’ policy is that use of funds from the States Bond will require a nominal income stream with the objective of being cost neutral.

The maximum amount that will be loaned in any case will be £40,000, though it is expected that most of the borrowers will be purchasing a property in or around the lower quartile. The borrower will be required to fund a minimum of 5% of the purchase price, which will go in part towards paying the Document Duty, Court and Greffe fees, surveyor’s and lawyer’s fees and bank’s arrangement fee (if any). The States would take a second charge (a bond) against the borrower’s property, the costs of which will be paid by the borrower. To ensure the funds are used for the most appropriate cases borrowers will be restricted to a maximum household income of one-fifth of the amount being borrowed from the lending bank. This controlled trail scheme could assist up to 200 individuals into owning homes in the private sector.

PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL ESTABLISHES TWO NEW BUSINESSES

BEFORE

AFTER Sarnia Photography was launched,’ he said. A passion for property and photography has led to the launch of two new businesses. Steve Le Cras, who has 29 years’ experience working in the industry, has launched Sarnia Photography and The Property Doctor. Mr Le Cras started his career as an architectural draftsman before moving to become a conveyancing clerk at Collas Day & Rowland where he spent 10 years before moving to become senior clerk at Trinity Chambers and then Mourant Ozannes. He then joined Sarnia Estate Agents as a property consultant before becoming a director and shareholder. No longer working day to day with the estate agency, he has launched two new complementary businesses aimed at providing a photographic and consultancy service. ‘In the six years I was with Sarnia, it grew to be a very successful agency and I felt I wanted a new challenge that combined all of the skills I had learnt over the last 29 years. Photography had, for many years, been a hobby and I had focused on increasing my expertise while at Sarnia, as a camera and estate agent go hand in hand. A specialist photography service seemed the natural step to take and so

‘There are some excellent photographers on the island but I found that not one focused just on property and the specific skills that are needed to capture internal and external shots. It’s been well documented that the housing market has slowed down and so it’s becoming increasingly important that a property looks its absolute best from the very moment it is launched to the market.’ Since launching, Mr Le Cras has also been commissioned by a number of architects, building contractors and commercial companies including hotels. ‘Some commissions can take a considerable amount of time as the weather has to be right, I need to make sure all the contractors have finished and a property is clean and tidy and with a number of hotel and restaurant projects, you have to consider tables being set and beds being made. No one job is the same and I have been really pleased with the success since launching.’ The idea to launch The Property Doctor came about as a result of the projects Mr Le Cras had been involved with through Sarnia Photography. ‘If an estate agent, after walking through the door, started picking flaws in your property, you probably wouldn’t instruct #04. them as you would feel that they were not going to be positive about it in front of a viewer. I can be totally honest with an owner because that is why they called me. I am completely unbiased, independent and impartial because I am not employed to sell it,’ he said. ‘I have shown people around thousands of properties and so I know what they look out for, what they like and more importantly what they don’t like. I use that experience to see a property through the eyes of a potential purchaser when visiting a property. I will tell you if the property needs work in places, has an off-putting odour, is untidy or even overpriced compared to similar properties. It is then up to the owner to make any changes to give themselves a better chance of selling. This, together with new photography, if requested, to give to the estate agent to market the property, completes the full service.’ More information is available at www.sarniaphotography.co.uk and www.thepropertydoctor.net

KEEP FIGHTING TAX HAVEN TAG AND STRESS NEUTRALITY, SAYS TOP CITY LAWYER

An international tax lawyer, who made headlines defending David Cameron’s implication in the Panama Papers, has urged Guernsey to defend its ‘highly trustworthy’ finance industry Words by TOM BRADSHAW Private wealth lawyer James Quarmby sparked off media frenzy last month with his summary of the David Cameron tax scandal as: ‘Man makes modest investment and pays all his taxes.’ In the height of the scrutiny over the Prime Minister’s financial affairs, the partner of London firm Stephenson Harwood spoke live on BBC Breakfast television stressing it was all a fuss over nothing, blindsiding his interviewers in

the process. He has since been quoted extensively in the media staunchly defending offshore finance centres like Guernsey. ‘They are a vital part of our globalised world – without them international trade and investment would seriously suffer, global GDP would be lower, and the world would be a poorer place.’ Speaking generally about the Panama Papers – extensive leaked documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca alluding to how wealthy individuals, including five heads of state, hid their assets offshore to avoid tax - Mr Quarmby said: ‘Just because some naughty people have used offshore for money laundering and tax evasion, doesn’t mean that everyone is using it for that. It is therefore wrong to judge the whole of the offshore industry on the actions of a single firm in Panama.’ The experienced tax lawyer, who is highly regarded for his professionalism among

clients and peers, is a regular visitor to Guernsey, conducting extensive funds business locally. He said the reason people use offshore finance centres is because they offer an impartial meeting place where there is neutral law and tax for money coming in as investments or deposits from other jurisdictions. ‘The press often obsesses over the fact that many offshore finance centres have zero or low rates of corporation tax and concludes that those businesses are therefore avoiding all tax. This is simply not true, as virtually every country in which an offshore company would wish to trade or invest will impose taxes on locally-sourced profits, which is one layer of tax. ‘In addition, the home jurisdiction of the shareholder of the offshore company will invariably tax that income either when it reaches the offshore company or when it is extracted. That’s the second layer of

tax.

to invest.

‘So an offshore centre like Guernsey with a zero corporate tax rate ensures that investors drawn from multiple jurisdictions are not exposed to a third layer taxation, and only pay taxes that are due in their home countries.’

But all offshore finance centres are super easy targets and the unfavourable scrutiny will likely remain, he added.

He said in many cases offshore investments will actually end up paying more tax when extracted than if they had stayed onshore due to earning higher profits. Guernsey is forever refuting claims it is a tax haven. Mr Quarmby said the island is probably wasting its time fighting that negative perception, but equally should not give up its efforts in doing so. Alongside that defence though, Guernsey should positively stress its strengths as a tax and law neutral jurisdiction with unrivalled standards of regulation, he added. ‘Realistically, what you are selling is tax neutrality, and that is always the term that I would prefer to use. You need to position the industry as effectively regulated, tax neutral and with a fair judicial system, as that’s exactly what it is and why it is such an attractive and business-friendly place

‘If I am feeling hard done by who else am I going blame other than the millionaires and those that supposedly facilitate them to avoid tax? You will always be in the firing line because of this hysterical widespread mind-set that anything offshore is illegal. Politicians play on this for point scoring – things really fired up in April and they undoubtedly will again down the line. But you’ll have to live with that scrutiny or go back to growing tomatoes.’ He claimed without finance the Channel Islands would become like the Hebrides as so many people would leave. ‘You have a great lifestyle and way of life thanks to the finance industry and should fight to the death to keep it.’ Mr Quarmby said Guernsey should be very proud of its world-famous industry. ‘I work with a lot of entrepreneurs and high net-worth individuals and Guernsey is an incredibly attractive place for such people

‘IF I AM FEELING HARD DONE BY WHO ELSE AM I GOING BLAME OTHER THAN THE MILLIONAIRES AND THOSE THAT SUPPOSEDLY FACILITATE THEM TO AVOID TAX?

85

to do business. You cannot underestimate the value of a jurisdiction where you can completely trust the financial regulation and fairness of the judiciary. There are a number of EU member states that I would not do business in as I simply don’t trust their finance industries. ‘You are selling a little island of stability – “we will not steal your money as we have far too much too lose. We are well regulated and trustworthy’ – that’s what sets you apart.’ He said in many aspects Guernsey commerce is more robustly regulated that the UK. ‘I can’t set up a new company in Guernsey, but I can set one up in London in 10 minutes. What does that tell you? Keep fighting and keep defending your corner.’ James Quarmby is a specialist in tax planning, wealth structuring and asset protection for international private clients. As well as being a qualified solicitor, he is a registered tax technician and is regulated by the Association of Tax Technician.

NEWLY RECRUITED Recent employee achievements and appointments in the business world.

FIVE SENIOR APPOINTMENTS AT JULIUS BAER Julius Baer has made five senior appointments to further develop its fastgrowing Channel Island and international businesses whilst expanding its investment services offering. Zurich, Guernsey, x April 2016 – Craig Allen has been appointed head of portfolio management Guernsey, Jean-Luc Le Tocq and Marie-Christine Potter have joined the relationship management team, Andrea Sarchet-Luff has become part of Julius Baer’s risk, legal and compliance team and Iain Stables joins the local credit team. The leading Swiss private banking group now employs over 90 staff on the island. Mr Allen, who is a chartered wealth manager, spent the last eight years at Credit Suisse where he served on four different boards across the UK and Guernsey. For five years, he headed up the portfolio management business in the UK, CI and Gibraltar and also had oversight globally for all sterling-based discretionary private mandates and sign-off on all investments held by UK resident non-domiciled clients.

His appointment will help Julius Baer expand further the existing investment offering for local and international clients. Mr Le Tocq was head of relationship management and investment advisory in Guernsey and a member of the Channel Islands executive board for the last 13 years at Credit Suisse. He is qualified as an associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and is a chartered wealth manager. Mrs Potter joins Julius Baer after 20 years as a senior relationship manager at Credit Suisse. She is fluent in French and Italian and is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. With over 28 years of private banking and wealth management experience, her focus has been on long-term relationships with private clients and their advisers based in Guernsey, London and other locations.

CAREY GROUP PROMOTES THREE HIGH ACHIEVERS CAREER changes are paying off well for three Carey Group staff who have just received promotions in their new professions.

In her new role, Ms Sarchet-Luff will have particular responsibility for governance and oversight. She brings a wealth of experience from her 10 years with the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, where she has worked at both assistant director and acting deputy director level within the banking and insurance division.

A former geologist, photographer and airline worker have all been promoted in the investment administration company’s corporate and fund services teams. They are among a number of staff with expertise in other areas that have been attracted to Carey Group in recent years seeking new challenges.

Mr Stables has over 20 years’ experience in private banking, providing lending solutions for an international client base. He holds the investment advice certificate and joins Julius Baer as a director in the credit team, with a focus on Lombard and mortgage lending.

Claire McSwiggan, 31, has been promoted to senior client relationship manager. Having joined Carey Group’s corporate team in November 2014 she provides company secretarial services to a diverse portfolio of companies including businesses listed on a number of stock exchanges worldwide. Formerly, Mrs McSwiggan worked as a geo-environmental consultant in both the oil and the construction industry before retraining as a company secretary.

‘I am delighted to welcome such highly experienced individuals to support the continuing growth of the Guernsey team of Julius Baer. Locally focused relationship management delivered through locally based professionals remains key to ensuring a quality private banking service for both local and international clients,’ said Paul Van Neste, branch manager Guernsey.

A second member of the growing corporate team, Emma Cunningham, has been promoted to client relationship manager. Previously working as a photographer, the 31-year-old joined Carey Group in March 2013 to embark on a new career. She manages a diverse portfolio of clients involved in developing real estate assets, listed companies and shipping. In the fund services team, Jo Hardy has also been promoted to client relationship manager. The 25-year-old moved to the company from an airline accounting role in December 2013. She manages a portfolio of clients which includes fund management companies and regulated funds investing in real estate, venture capital and private equity. Jim Gilligan, managing director of Carey Group Guernsey, commented: ‘These promotions are very well deserved by these three high performers. Our firm performed extremely well in 2015 with a significant volume of repeat business from existing clients in our corporate, fund and private client teams. These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of team members like Claire, Emma and Jo.’

Invest with Bob Heritage is a word often banded around when people talk about some of the venerable elders of the corporate world. Iconic brands such as MoĂŤt & Chandon have been with us for literally hundreds of years and boast a heritage of quality and integrity.

For companies however, as with wine, age is no guarantee of quality. While firms like Procter & Gamble may have been making soap for 130 years the heritage that matters to us, as investors, is one of treating shareholders well. When a board sits down at the end of the year to allocate profits what they choose to do with them has a significant impact on shareholders. For large stable businesses, which most of these corporate veterans have become, the decision to pass a portion of that profit back to shareholders via a dividend is vital. In fact the type of heritage we like to see in a company is one of reliably paying a dividend and even better of growing that dividend over time. Sticking with our Procter & Gamble example they have been paying a dividend ever since their incorporation in 1890 and have increased that dividend every year since the mid 1950’s. This type of consistency really matters to investors. Another company that has raised its dividend every year for over 50 years is Johnson & Johnson. What you can see from the chart below is that despite a huge amount of market and economic turmoil over the period the cash return to shareholders has been impressively consistent. Not even the 2008 financial crisis is visible. Johnson & Johnson Dividend

So what does this rare consistency mean for investors? The answer is; it means a lot. As investors we are looking for high quality businesses that can generate consistent profits over time. It is these firms that provide us with the growth that we need to help our clients meet their financial goals; goals such as saving for retirement. As you can see from the chart below stable earnings and therefore steadily growing dividends have a powerful compound affect over time. $1 Invested in Johnson & Johnson

All of our strategies contain a core of companies like this which provide that stable growth. This is why, for us, hunting out firms with a heritage of looking after their shareholders is a key part of helping our clients meet their long term investment goals.

SIMON DE LA RUE

What is it like to work for you? GSY Media is a wonderful place to work. We’ve been around for nearly a year now bringing new and exciting media to the island. Being in a fast pace environment it’s important to allow flexibility when needed. Poppy, Tiff’s dog is lying at my feet as I write this! What do you as a company stand for? Guernsey. We want to shout from the roof tops what a wonderful place it is that we live full of opportunity and happiness. To bring unbiased and happy news to islanders to bring a smile to their faces and a warm fuzzy feeling inside after picking it up. How does your company contribute to island life? We aim to provide information to islanders that they might have missed or didn’t know about. The idiosyncrasies that make Guernsey great. We also aim to raise awareness of the great work that charities do to help support those less fortunate. The magazine is free to pick up and I hope that islanders enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy producing it. How do you ensure your employees are happy? Generally looking after their health and wellbeing is always a good place to start. It’s mutually beneficial and means a lot. Occasionally having Tiff’s dog in the office is never a bad thing either. Pets in the work place is fun. If it was a micro pig that would also be fine. I don’t think a regular pig would work out too well though… What was your best personal mistake? After university I went to work for Superdry clothing company. I worked with a truly terrible manager who made going to work awful. It taught me how to never treat an employee and I promised I would never make someone feel as I did. I left the company and worked for a lighting company under the most inspirational sales director I could wish to meet. I now aim to make people that work for/with me feel as inspired and as motivated as I did. As an island what should we do more of? Shout about how wonderful Guernsey is. The countless times that I leave my car unlocked with my phone and wallet on the seat and arrive with it still there. How we can walk to work (for some people), swim in the sea, go to Herm and breathe in the fresh sea air on a cliff walk. The world needs to know so we can attract more people to come and grow our economy. What makes you love Guernsey? The weird and sometimes quirky heritage of the island. Try explaining what an Ormer is to an American in Texas… They love it and it’s what makes the island such an attractive place to visit, live and work. Not just Ormers but everything we have to offer!

BUSINESS NEWS Keeping you up to date with Guernsey’s best business news.

NEW MD AND AMBITIOUS GROWTH PLANS FOR OCS Seasoned facilities management professional Paul Timms has been appointed managing director of OCS in the Channel Islands. Mr Timms’ arrival coincides with considerable investment in the business which employs 340 people across Guernsey and Jersey and includes the newly-acquired Guernsey business Meadowcroft Engineering. There are ambitious plans to further grow the headcount of the business in both islands and broaden the range of services offered, particularly in Jersey. Following a serious incident in 2014, when an OCS employee fell through a warehouse roof, the business has thoroughly overhauled processes and procedures and has hired former Chief Health and Safety Executive with the States of Guernsey, Richard Brown, as a consultant. And the senior management team at OCS has been further bolstered by the appointment of Phil Taylor, previously with G4S for 25 years, as chairman. In his early career Mr Timms was general

manager of the Covent Garden General Store and he also worked for the executive search business owned by James Caan of Dragon’s Den. He went on to work for telecommunications and software organisations before taking on other senior operational and project management roles across a range of businesses. Mr Timms worked for G4S in the UK before moving to Guernsey as business development director and then business development and operations director at G4S Secure Solutions (Guernsey) Limited, covering the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. He said: “My ambition is for OCS to become the supplier of choice and I’m confident that we can achieve this with our competent and professional team in the islands. Mr Taylor said: “Paul’s appointment coincides with a period of considerable investment in the business to hire additional people and expand our services. He will lead us in further improving our professionalism and competence in the islands. “In welcoming Paul I’d also like to thank Mike de Laune for what he contributed to OCS during his tenure as managing director. Notably, he recently instigated the Meadowcroft acquisition and continues to support the business on a number of projects.”

DEVELOPMENTS IN E-MAIL SECURITY DISCUSSED AT SURE SEMINAR Understanding online threats and the latest developments in e-mail security are vital to ensuring local businesses guard themselves against data breaches according to a recent seminar hosted by Sure in Guernsey. Following a recent spate of ransomware attacks targeted specifically at Guernsey businesses, Steven Malone, product manager at email security firm Mimecast, outlined how local businesses can protect themselves. An audience of local technology and business leaders heard about the increasingly-sophisticated cyber-attacks targeted at corporate entities such as phishing and whaling attacks. Mr Malone suggested that businesses need to employ a three-layered approach to email security: technology, human and specialist software. This three-pronged approach involves diverting emails to an external facility so that links can be checked and potentially harmful links will never reach a company’s internal IT system. Summarising the presentation, Mr Malone said: “The key to creating an efficient human firewall is to ensure that people understand the need to be aware rather than frightened. Jo Cox, Chief Commercial Officer at Sure, said: “Island businesses are being targeted more and more frequently by these cyber predators and it is important that business leaders understand the importance of minimising the risks. “Of course, no level of awareness and no piece of software can 100% guarantee the safety of an internet user but if people are aware of the risks and the techniques and new technologies that are used then they can certainly protect themselves to a greater extent.”

GUERNSEY APPEALS TO US CITIZENS AS A RESULT OF GLOBAL DRIVE TOWARDS TRANSPARENCY A move towards global transparency has increased Guernsey’s appeal as a jurisdiction for tax and wealth planning to the US market, according to a local trust director. Andrea Daley Taylor was one of three directors from Trust Corporation International to attend the 12th Annual International Estate Planning Institute in New York, jointly staged by STEP New York and the New York State Bar Association. The firm attended as the sole gold sponsor of the two-day event and distributed Guernsey Finance collateral from their prominent exhibition stand. “People seemed to home in on the Guernsey collateral – they were interested in what Guernsey can offer as a jurisdiction. We’ve worked at raising awareness because Americans have historically favoured the Caribbean financial centres and are familiar with what they know,” Mrs Daley Taylor said. “There’s a definite interest in shifting away from that now. We’re introducing Guernsey as a viable alternative with a strong judicial system and regulatory environment that can offer a better service.” The conference included technical updates from distinguished speakers exchanging ideas and discussing developments in international estate planning. It focused on the needs of international families with a US touchpoint. There were also discussions about the practicalities of Common Reporting Standards (CRS) and other global initiatives following on from FATCA. The Guernsey independent fiduciary firm identified the US as a key market for its services some years ago and was attending the New York event for the third consecutive year.

BARCLAYS BRINGS COMMUNITY BANKING TO GUERNSEY Community banking has arrived in Guernsey. Barclays has introduced the new initiative in its branches, bringing in the role of community banker to create a team of multi-skilled employees working in each branch. Community bankers will spend more time ‘on the floor’ interacting with customers and helping them access the range of services available to them. As part of the launch Barclays has also appointed a new branch manager and assistant branch manager to ensure customers receive the best service possible and continually upskill the community bankers. Justine Gaudion, head of local markets for Barclays in Guernsey, said: “The launch of community banking reflects the way banking is changing with customers increasingly choosing to conduct basic transactions through a digital platform and instead using branches for more in-depth conversations with staff. “Our customers in the UK have told us they love the new structure and our Community Bankers locally are excited with the new role. “We will always offer customers the opportunity to take advantage of any new technology that can provide an easier way to carry out their transactions. Community #04. MAY 2016. THE HERITAGE ISSUE.

banking will ensure customers are always offered a choice and staff are on hand to help or support any customers if they need it.” The launch of community banking is supported by a range of other Barclays’ initiatives such as trained teams of employees, called Digital Eagles, who focus on helping people get the most from the digital world. Barclays has also launched new accessibility apps that make banking easier for everyone, such as Barclays Pingit, an app that links your mobile with your bank account and makes it easy to pay money straight into another account and Barclays Mobile banking which enables you to manage your banking by phone. Ken Bradley, director at Barclays in Guernsey said: “Investing in branches is an important part of our strategy for customer service. The branch has recently been refurbished and with our newly trained staff now in place we think our customers will enjoy the experience of banking with us even more.”

SURE SUPPORTS YOUNG BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS It’s never too early to develop business skills, as the Channel Island Student Business Challenge and Young Enterprise scheme demonstrate. Sure has supported Young Enterprise for a number of years, providing sponsorship and business advisors to various teams. The scheme, which operates nationally, helps students in Years 11 and 12 to make the connection between school and the world of work by giving them the opportunity to set up companies and devise products, services and events to make money. Each team has professional advisors from the world of business and Sure’s Stephen Ozanne has acted as a company advisor, and more recently as a board member, for several years. The advisor role is role is an incredibly rewarding one as advisors get to convey key business skills such as communication, problem solving, confidence and financial capability to the students that they’re working with. The skills learnt on the Young Enterprise programme teach the students about the practicalities of running a business and allow them to take on a number of business roles including marketing, sales and operations. It is important to make business

relevant to students early on so they can develop knowledge and gain experience in the realities of business before they embark on their own careers. The process of learning the skills required in the working world now begins earlier thanks to the Channel Island Student Business Challenge which is aimed at students in years 7 to 11. The Challenge is being held in Guernsey for the very first time this year with 70 students from St Sampson’s High School and Elizabeth College competing. The Challenge culminates this month with a Dragon’s Den-style event where the teams will present to a panel of judges on their abilities to run a business.

Sure has supported the Jersey Student Business Challenge since 20XX and when the initiative extended to become the Channel Island Student Business Challenge Sure jumped at the chance to support it. The involvement is much greater than a simple sponsorship as the Challenge aims to go beyond the competition itself and provide a more thorough introduction to business. Sure CEO Eddie Saints presented at the Challenge’s Guernsey launch event and has acted as a mentor to one of the teams. Mr Saints said: “The level of innovation and enthusiasm shown by the teams are incredibly impressive. The students started off with some great ideas and it’s been very rewarding to help them grow these ideas and develop the business skills that one day they’ll use in the world of work.” Sure encourages training and development within the company and its Sure Academy scheme recruits school-leavers for on-the-job training on an annual basis.

WORKSPACES The studio located half way up Mill Street, in a former art supplies shop, has become a “watering hole for design ideas. On the journey through town, through a series of carful layers the shop provides an intimate gaze on the creative spirit and openness of Jamie Falla Architecture. A contemporary white space nestled within and respecting the old Quarter, showing how old and new can sit in harmony together. A beacon of light, opening up to the street, connecting our work to the wider community in the heart of St Peter Port.

#04. MAY 2016. THE HERITAGE ISSUE.

BUSINESS. WORKSPACES.

The shop front provides a continuous message of opportunity with a number of simple signs, a silent language, welcoming, providing interest to all passers by young and old. Children stop on the pavement and become fascinated by the card and plastic models on the low window seat, adults stop, point and discuss the grand designs and changing landscape of architecture within the window. This initial literal transparency between the studio and their gaze connects the viewer further into the working of the everyday process of designing houses, big and small. The sharp pencils and tracing paper juxtaposed with the titanium Apple mac computers expresses a confidence and openness to the simple means of communicating ideas within our creative industry, showing the duality of the tools of our trade, our respect for old processes, whilst fully connected to the tools of the modern world, laying bare the creative process of architecture. Through this simple architectural language this interior fit-out of the ancient and listed building, respecting the location and the heritage of the past, whilst becoming a new studio, intertwining a dialog between indoor and outdoor, place and space, walls and glasses, old and new, individual and community. The space sends a continuous positive pulse into the wider community about the positive aspects of good sensitively design space and the benefits it brings to not only the inhabitants of the space but the community and wider built environment. The project seeks to facilitate collaboration among the various professionals working within JFA without compromising privacy and the moments of creativity. Through the creation of a few signs, often walls of limited height, they identify areas for individual work, meetings, library, storage, rest and for the reception of

customers. The almost exclusive use of the colour white and translucent material allows light, overhead or side, to spread candidly in different spaces. The project not only seeks to review the brief of a open working studio and space to make them more functional, but had to search for a language in which to recognize and at the same time pass on to its customers. Consistency, truth, transparency, balance simplicity, are the key concepts that the commission wished to translate within the interior architecture. The space and the study of perception were the main theme of this renovation project not only in design but also in the choice of materials and in the definition of the construction details. The tiled industrial floor and metal ceilings, white walls, the glass, the lights, the layering of each material, no more no less, participating in the elimination of each barrier, the space becomes fluid, the connections become prospective routes. The furnishings are pure volumes participating in the definition of environments becoming an integral part of the architectural project and part of the Mill Street.
