to May!
As we step slowly towards summer and slowly out of lockdown, it seems there is a feeling of optimism in the air. The longer days and hopefully brighter weather certainly lift the spirits, as well as being able to see our family and friends outside again, after months apart for many. It is all positive and very welcomed! The benefits of the vaccine are filtering through now, so here’s hoping we are moving ever closer to a more normal situation again. At the time of writing, the non-essential shops are on the verge of opening again; what a truly difficult time it has been for so many businesses. Please do support our local shops and services as they start on the road to recovery, and what a joy it will be to shop local again for non-essential items as well as the essentials of course! Locally there is certainly an increase in activity and finally after months without any local events, we are able to include a couple of evens/items of interest in this issue! Not quite at the level they used to be just yet, but at least it’s a start! We hope to build on these if the lockdown limitations continue to decrease over the coming months. So all in all, a promising month ahead which also includes a couple of Look Local Birthdays, for Michelle our Assistant Editor and for Kirsty our super duper designer! I wish them both very Happy Birthdays and I hope they are both able to have some little celebrations! As well as these work buddy Birthdays, my best friend, my middle son, and my favourite little doggie also celebrate Birthdays in May! Sounds like I may need to bake a cake or two! Here’s hoping you all have a good month too, With Best Regards,
Ros

Halotherapy, what is it & why should you try it? Halotherapy originated over 100 years ago in Eastern Europe. In 1843 a Polish physician named Feliks Boczkowski promoted the idea of salt treatment after noticing that workers at salt mines, unlike other miners, did not have respiratory or lung problems. Halotherapy has since been recognised in Europe for the treatment of breathing and skin conditions. It is used throughout the world today with documented and consistently positive results. Halotherapy is a safe, all natural, and drug-free alternative. It involves sitting in a room for 2030 mins where tiny particles of pharmaceutical grade salt (sodium chloride) 0.3-0.5 microns are dispersed into the room. You stay fully clothed and it is a touchless therapy, so you will be in the room either on your own, or with someone from your bubble. Dry salt is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial. It is not considered a replacement for pharmaceuticals but offers a holistic, drug free, natural way to promote better breathing, healthier skin, sounder sleep, improved physical fitness and overall wellness. Covid has really highlighted the importance of not just staying healthy but supporting our respiratory health and immune system too. I have been using Halotherapy myself now for the past 3 years. There is a bit of story on my website about how I got into this and why I am so passionate about sharing the benefits with others, especially my local community. I look forward to welcoming you to my garden salt room, located in Bookham, Surrey. Business Focus

The local RSPB group for Bookham, is a friendly group that provides members with a range of bird watching walks and relevant talks. We are all looking forward to the restrictions being lifted, but we have continued through the lockdown with a series of really interesting talks via Zoom and occasional 1 to 1 socially distanced walks. Over the last few months we have got together for occasional “coffee mornings” on Zoom and had talks on Ospreys in Cumbria; a French nature reserve in La Brenne; an introduction to bird watching session and a talk about visits to Estonia and Madagascar; all supported with some

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
THE STORY OF THE GRANGE The Grange Centre in Bookham provides homes, skills, social opportunities and care for some 130 adults with learning disabilities. The site in Rectory Lane pre-dates 1600 and was the subject of a fascinating online lecture by local historian Vivien White to the Leatherhead & District Local History in March. She showed how the original building Grange house 1910 was a yeoman’s house, was then used as cottages for farm labourers, was transformed into a gentleman’s residence in the 19th century, and was sold to the School of Stitchery and Lace, forerunner of the present charity, in the 20th. The 500 years of its history are filled with human interest stories and Vivien hopes to complete a book on The Grange later this year, if archives open to allow her to complete the research. In the meantime, Eloise Appleby, today’s chief executive officer of The Grange, is currently training hard for a sponsored 95Eloise training with The Grange Scottish Walking Team 2019 mile walk in Scotland in late June to raise funds for the charity. It was hit hard by the Covid-19 restrictions and she will be walking the West Highland Way. Vivien’s 45-minute talk explained why The Grange has always technically been in Great Bookham although situated right on the boundary with the neighbouring parish of Little Bookham. She used historical maps to show that while jutting into Little Bookham, it was probably built on that spot to be close to the strips of

land in common fields overlooked by and belonging to the original owner. One early owner was Henry Collins, a rector of Little Bookham church half a mile away. He was the son of a mercer from Kingston-upon-Thames and probably the first rector of the church with a university degree, bought with a legacy from his father. He died in an epidemic leaving a wife and young family. After the children grew up, the property was sold to a local yeoman.
Bird family Group at The Grange June 1908
It was occupied by farm labourers until the late 18th century when a rich London gentleman, Henry Seawell, who was already renting a house nearby, bought it together with the land. His great-grandson developed the building into a substantial residence and gave it the name The Grange. This he sold to a wealthy London solicitor, Arthur Bird, at the end of the 19th century and Bird extended the house. He also bought other property in Bookham and even had the route of Rectory Lane moved in order to give The Grange a lawn in front of it and a grand entrance. The School of Stitchery and Lace, established to give employment to nurses injured in the First World War, moved there in 1938. The name changed in the 1970s and it became a registered care home in the 1980s, encouraging disabled adults to live more independent and fulfilling lives. Eastwick Park Ornamental Dairy
Built in 1806, the dairy stood close to Eastwick Park manor house in Great Bookham (demolished 1958). The larger building is the dairy where cream and butter were produced, whilst the smaller one is the scalding house, which provided the heat needed as part of the cheese-making process. The buildings were situated in a dell in order to gather heavier, colder air around the dairy. Turville Kille (18981997) described how as a boy before the First World War he would ‘go down steps into the dairy where on a hot summer`s day the difference of temperature was unbelievable. The right hand side of the room was tiled with blue and white tiles and there was also a solid angular slab on which stood bowls of cream, jugs of milk and joints of meat for the Manor House’. After the First World War and the breaking up of the estate, dairy farming ceased and the dairy became redundant. By 1976 it was dilapidated and placed on the English Heritage list of buildings at risk, then Listed Grade II in 1990. Readers may recall seeing the decaying dairy in the garden of a bungalow near the junction of Eastwick Road with Lower Road, Great Bookham. Further deterioration occurred until the Leatherhead & District Countryside Protection
16 Looklocal Magazine - May 2021
Society appointed conservation architects to develop a scheme for restoring the buildings. It was agreed in 2011 that the owners of the property within whose garden the dairy had survived would donate it to the Weald and Downland Living Museum. The Society then made a significant grant towards the cost of its dismantling and transport to the Museum, where it has now been skilfully conserved and rebuilt as it would have been when new. Founded in 1929, the Leatherhead & District Countryside Protection Society exists to, among many other things, champion ‘meritorious buildings’. It has been very pleased therefore to learn that the Surrey Industrial History Group has awarded the Weald and Downland Living Museum its 2021 Conservation Award for the expert restoration of the dairy. Further information about the dairy and its conservation may be found by searching the Museum’s website: www.wealddown.co.uk Surrey Industrial History Group: www.sihg.org.uk Michael Herbert Leatherhead & District Countryside Protection Society

Bookham Wine Club A virtual journey through the Rhone Valley with wine expert Heather Dougherty
Zoom played its part again in April when club members joined Heather Dougherty on a virtual tour of the delightful Rhone Valley and its vineyards. Heather, a leading wine expert, journalist and educator is always happiest exploring the classic wines of France, and as one of only three Certified Rhone Educators in the UK, she was the perfect host to lead us. Our journey was rich in detail, as Heather described the Valley’s demanding terrain, and how the vineyards (probably the oldest in France) produce a range of grape varieties that are planted and carefully managed across the Northern and Southern areas of the Rhone Valley. The diversity of the wine-growing areas, due to the complex soils and variations of the Mediterranean climate,Inglebourne_88x128mm_Press_Ad_LLB_2.pdf give the Rhone Valley wines their unique character. Mostly reds, the wines of the Rhone are

divided into three colours. In the north, robust but fine reds and aromatic whites. In the south, more fullbodied reds, expressive whites and round and fruity rosés. Sweet wines complete this large range. Before our meeting, members were provided with a ‘shopping list’ of wines to purchase and taste during the presentation - and this worked well for members with an extensive range of wines at prices to suit all pockets! As we progress towards the summer, and in line with Government regulations, the Wine Club are planning a series of small outdoor meetings with interesting wines to taste; so if you would like details of these, or info on any aspect of Wine Club activities, please email membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk or our website: 14:17 1 visit 04/02/2021 www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk.

THE MEETING PLACE Our new Telephone Befriending Service offered to older people in Bookham and the surrounding area who feel lonely or isolated is beginning to receive referrals. It is important to us that we link these referrals to one of our trained volunteers who might have similar interests. If you or anyone you know would benefit from this one to one contact which in time could be face to face do contact us on 07596 837063 or email jane.bellingham@eastwickroadchurch.co.uk It is wonderful that the vaccine against covid has been rolled out to so many people but of course there are still those isolating and those affected financially by job loss. The Community Fridge still delivers around 150 bags a week and thanks to a grant from one of the leading supermarkets were able to deliver some special extras at Easter. There is a Help Yourself table at the front of the Youth Centre on Saturday mornings from 11am-12noon. Our band of volunteers are so hard working ensuring that not only is this a lifeline to many but it also prevents food from going to landfill.
Our Language hub for those for whom English is not their first language and our Lipreading for people who are very hard of hearing are continuing on zoom until such time as we are able to meet in person. We keep in touch by phone with many of our regulars who are looking forward to the Coffee Shop reopening, which we hope will be in early summer.

Lucy of Buy to Let Hunter interviews a local entrepreneur Buy To Let Hunter is a fresh approach to property purchase – we recently sat down with one of our early investors to catch up with him:
Raffi is a local business owner doing a great thing for the world - he arrived in Richmond with enough money for just 8 months. He followed a hunch and set up Bantam Materials - providing Prevented Ocean Plastic, recycling and collecting from at-risk coastal communities and creating a research centre on the Richmond Green – we think he is marvellous, and we are not the only ones! He just won: “Sustainable Initiative of The Year”. Whoop! Raffi realised that he wanted to invest in property but preferred a professionally managed structure run by trustworthy people to allow him the freedom to focus on the craziness in his own world. Raffi approached us and asked us to help. Through Buy To Let Hunter, Raffi has purchased a pure investment property and a holiday home which he uses in conjunction with renting it out to paying guests.
his lifestyle greatly. He has a free holiday home that pays for itself, in fact it pays Raffi just to own it!! Raffi says: “My kids have a pool, access to nature, the cottage overlooks a lake… And it’s just an hour and a half from London.” “It’s absolutely no hassle.... The team at BTLH do absolutely everything, checking in guests, housekeeping, making sure everything is perfect for my family and visitors. I just turn up. Oh, and cash the cheques! In fact it makes me a Gross yield 12% - £52,000 annually” “And I had no doubt I could trust Adrian after I met him. The single biggest thing is that my interests were ahead of their company profit. So, I feel I can really trust the advice.” We do love a happy punter! If you think we might be able to enhance your life in the way we have for Raffi, please give us a call 020 7550 9396 or hello@buytolethunter.com. For more information check out www.buytolethunter.com Quadrant Road, Richmond, London, TW9 1DH
Raffi says: “For me there wasn’t a second choice when I met the Buy To Let Hunter team. It was about working with someone trustworthy and when speaking to one of the directors, a local guy, it was clear he was someone I could trust. I didn’t need to look any further. And my expectation has been more than met.” Obviously investing in anything is risky, but understanding that, Raffi feels he has enhanced Advertising feature

Book Reviews MAY 2021
‘The Illness Lesson’ by Clare Beams (Paperback £8.99) It’s 1871 and girls at a progressive new school are being taught to think and speak, to reason clearly; but who will listen? Caroline Hood is finding her feet as a teacher when the liberal ideals of her father clash with the burden of dealing with a disruptive student who develops a mysterious illness that spreads to the other girls. As a doctor arrives to deliver a cure, Caroline finds that the things men leave unsaid hold greater power than their spoken promises. The hopeful creativity and heavyhanded authority that characterise this particular moment in history, education and “medicine” had me gripped. I was quickly engrossed in the storytelling which becomes more urgent and bright with fury as events unfold.
‘And Now For The Good News’ by Ruby Wax (Hardback £14.99) With good sense and good humour Ruby Wax turns her back on the doom merchants and goes in search of hope. She finds it. If you notice your anxiety levels creeping up when absorbing the news, if your small steps for positive change seem meaningless, or if you just want a book to make you laugh then do pick this up. Wax’s hands-on approach to seeking out information makes her a vivid guide to the good news being made each day in community, business, the environment, and restores a sense of balance and possibility that is sadly lacking in our major sources of news. It’s full of great stories, good ideas, helpful resources, and writing to make you laugh out loud.
‘The Art of Falling’ by Danielle McLaughlin (Hardback £16.99) I loved this beautifully written story of Nessa McCormack’s life and loves. The curator of an art gallery in Cork city, Nessa is organising an exhibition of works of the late sculptor Robert Locke. He is her favourite artist and the subject of her art history degree thesis from decades earlier. The McCormacks are trying to hold their marriage together following her husband Philip’s infidelity. This is jeopardised by the arrival of a friend from their past and a strange woman connected to Locke. They will have to find out if they can overcome the issues resurrected by these events.

WE’RE BACK Now that we have fully opened and have returned to our normal hours of Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 5:30pm, we are operating with full social distancing steps in place for the protection of our staff and customers. We really can’t emphasis our appreciation to you for your support and co-operation over the last year and more. Where possible we will be offering walk in support, and full product browsing. Our industry is still badly affected by product shortages and poor availability. Many of our suppliers are anticipating this to be the “norm” for most of 2021. However you will be pleased to know we remain well stocked enabling you to come into the store and fully equip yourself there and then. Out Total Care support product remains a must have for many customers, in short we become your IT support department providing full remote support over the phone and directly connected to your PC or Mac, we protect your machine with the addition of Webroot Internet Security, we automatically backup your data to our cloud, and cover your machine against any unplanned labour costs. All of this for a small annual fee of £125 + vat. Please ask for further information, or get further information from our website www.tecres.co.uk/home-support
Been working from home? Are you just returning to your usual work place, but fear you have lost control of your data as some of it is at home, and some is at work? We have some very easy to use cloud solutions which place your data in one central secure cloud storage location, your data is then synchronised or accessible to your pc’s, Mac’s, phone’s and tablet’s regardless of your location. You can also share files and folders with colleagues and co-workers, without losing control of your information. Sounds interesting? Please ask for more details.
Security - Are you up to date? Ensuring your machines and data are secure and operated efficiently is of vital importance. Using out of date software can lead you to difficulties with your machine being compromised and hackers having access to your personal data. If your PC does not have Windows 10 installed it is out of date, and we would urge you update to Windows 10. To easily identify if your machine is running Windows 10, your onscreen Windows start button will look like this… To ensure you are using the up-to-date version of Windows 10 click on the on screen magnifying glass and type “update” (enter) this will then tell you if you have the latest version, or if you need to update- currently the latest Windows 10 version is 20H2 - this changes frequently. If you are a Mac user the latest version of your system software is “Big Sur”. To check what version you are using go to the icon in the top left hand corner, and select “about this Mac”. Here will inform you what version you are running. If your version is not Big Sur select the “Software Update” option and if you can get the new version it will take you through this process. Should you like any further information or assistance please do get in touch.

Join the Bookham litter picking
‘WOMBLES’
IN THE GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN 2021
You can either join us on Sunday 6th June at 11 am at the Lower Shott car park or pick individually/with your household/bubble any time between 28th May and 13th June. Either way, it’s easy to stay Covid safe by socially distancing and using gloves and a litter grabber. We typically pick for 1-1.5 hours and this year GBSC are asking people to say the time they have picked for. We’ll collate all the data and submit as a group, although all individual picking times within the 2 week period can be included if you let us have them by contacting us as below. If you’re a regular and have borrowed equipment from Margaret, do remember to bring it along with you, but if you don’t have any we can provide all you need. If you’re picking individually outside the main

group the following applies for what you collect. Try and fit it into your own black wheelie bin for the regular collection, but if it won’t fit, then email Joint Waste Solutions at molevalley@jointwastesolutions.org giving your name and address and saying it’s from a litter pick. Then put the bag outside your property where you normally leave your bins. It will be collected within a day or two by the street cleaners as a special, not by Amey on their regular weekly collect. Amey have been told not to collect extras left by the black bin. For more information, please email litterpicking@ bookhamresidents.org.uk or leave a message 0300 030 9890. Looking forward to a good turnout! Diane Poole

Mazda MX-30 CROSSOVER CAR REVIEW BY TED MACAULEY
It may not yet have reached your local showroom but the Mazda newcomer is a bargain of a treat not to be missed in my humble opinion. A guaranteed frontrunner in a hotly contested competition for the ideal family car. The company celebrated its 100th anniversary by letting loose the brain-boxes and giving them free rein to clash heads on with a newly designed challenger, shaped and specced with curvy lines, and extensive but easy to fathom controls. The front doors are conventionally set-up, while the rear ones are hinged at the back, a pillar-less style so useful and popular it has been already used on Mazda’s RX-8 sports coupe as well as the Rolls Royce Phantom limo, the BMW 13, and just about every London cab. The system offers attractive and wide-open entry. Behind the wheel, despite its superbly low slung looks and a handsome profile, you are perched comfortably and conveniently high on its 18inch wheels, enabling one to revel in a commanding seating position with confidence boosting views of the outside world, allowing early sighting of any looming dangers. As for driving! It is sprightly, safe and secure with rewarding and pleasing pace and handling as nimble as can be, a relief for the cackhanded among our road sharers. The whole set up is Eco-friendly with its distinctive
and neat looks, a dashboard clear and concise and all viewed from contemporary fabric seats. And the boot! Wow! Massive, cleverly shelved with welcome divisions and dual purpose innards so however much luggage you aim to carry on your superbly comfortably relaxing seats to far distant treks or niggling stop-go, bumper-to-bumper crawls around our jam-packed city roads, you will never be cursing the designers. Rather more... thanking them... and relaxing in the leg room and head-and-shoulders generous spaces. The 2021 models, released in March, feature some with a gleaming white exterior, a genuine eye-catcher befitting what the car contains beneath its shapely and enticing frame, all curvy and sexy and a wide open invitation for you to dig not so deeply into your wallet or purse or make a serious dent in you bank balance. So, the cost? Prices range from £25,545 for the SE-L Lux to £27,545 for the Sport Lux and topping out at £29,845 for the hot-shot, range leader, the GT Sport Tech. The lithium-ion batteried version, smaller and lightweight, goes from zero-62 mph in 9.7 seconds and has a flat-out speed of 87 mph. It rewards you with a range of 124miles - fine for commuting but not for long journeys. Overall, and do forgive my insatiable play on words, it is a bit of a Mazdapiece...terrific value. Think about it.
