14 Welcome to October

Here we, are heading into Autumn; school routines are getting established again and half term is just around the corner. And what a very strange year this continues to be. Obviously, the virus is causing disruption to our normal routines, and worry the world over, but I think it’s quite amazing how adaptable we humans are. The majority of us have, even if in a begrudging way, adapted to new ways of life, different shopping routines, the wearing of a face mask in public places, and certainly different working set ups, and on the whole, an altogether more local way of life.

Many have discovered new or forgotten hobbies and past-times; cooking, baking and gardening are amongst the most popular I believe, and having such wonderful, local suppliers and services has never been so helpful and appreciated. We remain thankful to all the key workers who continue to help us through these weird times; all the NHS staff, the many different delivery services, from post to prescriptions, our teachers, the police and fire services, paramedics and carers…. so many amazing people who selflessly carry on regardless, providing much needed services to help the rest of us, but also the shop owners and workers for the service they provide for our communities. And in support of everyone, the very least we can do is remember “HANDS / FACE / SPACE” So let’s all continue to do our part, and we will get thought this together! There are not many local events taking place at the moment BUT if you do plan to go along to any advertised meetings, please do call ahead of time to confirm if they are still taking place. Things can change on an almost daily basis. I hope you all have a good month, and do keep well, Best Regards,

poached pear ghosties ingredients method 1 lemon 1 vanilla pod, halved lengthways 500g granulated sugar 4 Waitrose Conference Pears 100g fresh raspberries 8 small dried blueberries (Serves 4)

1. Pare the zest from the lemon and squeeze the juice. Place in a medium saucepan with the vanilla pod, sugar and 1 litre of water then bring to a gentle simmer. 2. Peel the pears, removing a slice from the bottom so they can stand upright. Add the pears to the pan and simmer for 20 minutes then turn off the heat, leave to cool completely then chill until you are ready to serve. 3. When ready, place the raspberries on 4 small serving plates and mash with a fork until pulpy. Press 2 blueberries into each pear for the eyes then sit the pears on the raspberry pulp. Spoon over a little of the cooking syrup and serve.

cooking tip Make sure the pears are completely submerged in the liquid so they poach evenly – add a little more water as needed.

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Zoom online talks The Covid-19 Lockdown and its aftermath have radically affected this year’s programme of monthly presentations normally held at the Leatherhead Institute. Instead we have introduced a programme of online talks using Zoom technology. People who are not online will be able to see them fully reported in this magazine, on our website and in future L&DLHS Newsletters. To enjoy each talk from the comfort of your own home you need to register in advance via talksonline@ leatherheadhistory.org. Once registered you will be sent User ID and Password details ahead of the event. The programme of Zoom events began on Friday, 18 September, when Andy Davies, curator of the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society’s library at Leatherhead Station, talked about Leatherhead Station, The Stationmaster’s House. This was followed on Saturday by L&DLHS member Simon Ritchie on Industrial g - Ordnance Surveyy Trigg Archaeology Hiding in Plain Sight Points. Coming up next is tour guide and author Julian McCarthy introducing The Secret History off Kingston upon Thames on Monday, 12 October.. Admission to the meetingg m will be from 7.10pm On for start at 7.30pm: O Monday, 22 Novembeer, with the same starting timees, author Paul Le Messurrier will give a talk based on his recently published boook, Surrey’s Military Herittage. Zoom talks. The date for this and subjects are still to be confirmed. Other Zoom talks are also on offer via the Surrey History Meetup website run by Simon Ritchie. Google Surrey History Meetup and follow the guidance on how to join those. Local history enthusiast Robin Daly spoke on Monday, 7 September about Lonesome Lodge, a fascinating 18th century estate. Situated in the little known area of Broadmoor, near Wotton, tantalising small remnants of this estate can still be found today. Robin joined a group of people from Capel History Group and their findings resulted in a book which can be purchased from Dorking Museum. ON THE HORIZON?

With Christmas being on the horizon and the possibility of long term home working and/or home schooling, now is a great time to take stock of some of the new innovations and how transformative they may be in the future. Just remember it wasn’t that long ago when we thought the use of the webcam was for the occasional Christmas or Birthday greeting call! The two big game console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft have been polishing off their new arrivals, at the same time the major PC component manufacturers have been working hard, with one of the major announcements being the true high performance graphics card line which will provide really spectacular realism in 4K graphics, with the arrival of the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card, with an indicated price of less than £500.00, this really will permit the PC to be the machine for all activities. If you are being limited by the range of your wifi internet connection, there is a new Mesh wifi range extender which can be installed in seconds and expanded to

provide coverage in the largest of properties, the Deco range offer an affordable and versatile solution which can be expanded to suit your needs as they evolve. We have a new range of curved monitors in stock which are very impressive, the clarity is first rate, the colour reproduction is excellent, and the curve really makes you feel more involved with what is on the displayseeing is believing! With the increase in home working, we have been very active in providing network and internet solutions for garden offices and cabins. Pretty well every installation is different, so if you would like to discuss your situation we probably have an very effective solution for you. Some products like webcam, headsets, laptops, tablets and home printers are still on limited availability, with availability being patchy until the New Year. Whatever your requirements are please call us as you may be surprised by what we can do and provide. Stay safe and we look forward to being of service to you.

Book Reviews OCTOBER 2020

You Will Never Be Forgotten by Mary South (Haperback £12.99) I loved the imagination, insight and pitch-black humour in these short stories. Mary South plays with the possible roles of technology in our future, the emotional and very human challenges of trying to augment our lives in new ways. I loved the way she mingles the real and already-present influence of technology, from telephones to brain surgery, with situations yet to be experienced. Can our slowly evolved minds keep up with these radical leaps into the future?

The Outlaw Ocean by Ian Urbina (paperback £9.99) This is a riveting tour of the hidden crimes and dramas on the world’s oceans. Ian Urbina spent five years, including three at sea, investigating the stories of trafficking, exploitation, illegal fishing, and many other dangerous games being played out on the open seas. He travels to nations and within organisations trying to redress the damage being done, from tiny countries like Palau fighting against illegal shark fin fishing in their territory, Sea Shepherd’s high-risk, high-speed chases in Antarctic waters, and those trying to rescue the many people trapped into slavery. A fascinating, important and astonishing book.

Flavour by Yotam Ottolengi (hardback £27) Yotam is back with ‘Flavour’, solely dedicated to vegetables. ‘Flavour’ takes Ottolenghis’s trademark style of vegetable cooking to the next level and dives into flavour combinations that let individual ingredients shine and enhance one another. The book is broken down into three sections, Process, Pairing and Produce. It is easy to follow and the results are amazing whether you consider yourself a good chef or a good family cook. Flavour is also beautiful, from the cover to all the sumptuous glossy photos of the recipes. A fantastic gift to treat yourself, or as a sumptuous gift for someone at Christmas.

THE L

BOOKHAMS SIDENTS’ RES AS SSOCIATION

www.bookhamresidents.org.uk 0300 030 9890

Although like a lot of Bookham organisations the BRA has to suspend some of its activities during the last year, for example the organised monthly litter pick, it has continued to operate in many other areas during the lock down. So far this year the BRA has facilitated the payment of MVDC Emergency Funding grants to Claire Ede’s Great Bookham Mask Tree and Lavender Catering both of whom have been supporting and working with Bookham Community Fridge. We have also worked as part of a team with Bookham Community Association and residents in The Garstons, Mead Crescent and Stonehill Close in a MVDC planning application to create an Asset of Community Value for the parcel land known locally as the “Garstons Triangle”. If this application is approved it will give this much used green space some protection from property speculation. At the time of writing over 150 people have supported the application. On the environmental front the BRA has been involved with the national Blue Hearts scheme which involves restoring native wild flowers and encouraging biodiversity along grass verges. This has involved working with Surrey County Council to make this happen sympathetically in our area. Earlier this year there were incidences concerning the control of dogs on Bookham Common. As a result, the BRA, Friends of Bookham Common, Bookham Councillors and representatives of the National Trust (NT) have met several times via video conferences to discuss the problems and what could be done to improve the situation. These meetings have been fruitful but this is only the start of an education programme and more meetings

will take place to see what we can do to ensure all residents can enjoy our open spaces. These are just some of the activities the BRA has been involved with during the pandemic and you can read more on these and other stories on the BRA website. HURACÁN Reviewed by Ted Macauley I have been rocketed back down Memory Lane with the exciting revelation that the legendary Lamborghini makers of stand-out extra-special cars are in the process of raiding the super-car market with a breathtaking 200mph Lambo Huracan. Wow-wee! The latest model, priced at £180,840,will definitely glamourise my garage if I win top prize on the pools or benefit from an inheritance from a long lost millionaire relative. Okay it’s a whopping price - but measured against rivals in the mind-blowing supercar range it is, in my humble opinion, great value for your lolly. The model I owned in the 70’s was the Espada, a vividly scarlet four-seat GT Coupe, a target for the gawpers and the envy of all my pals - and plenty of strangers, too. It was my transport to Europe’s F1 venues, when I was covering Grand Prix racing for a national newspaper. And it made light work of the autoroutes, in utter comfort and blistering responses to my right foot demands, and as steady and safe as houses. Thirsty, though! But I didn’t care. It was too much of a pleasure to worry about its gulping ways. The latest version, the Huracan, is a jaw dropper. 202 mph, 0-62 in 3.3 seconds, its 602 bhp engine and a real wail of noise from its 5.2_litre power unit at 8,000 rpm. Fuel consumption, should you be bothered to worry about, varies between 20mpg and 11.5mpg when you hoof it on the motorways, or free-to-go-for it stretches on the Continent. If you are not satisfied with its pace, all you have 34 LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020

to do is drop down a gear or two in its seven-speed box and withstand being forced back into your seat, as the beast rears it head and roars away - but with complete steadiness and sureness. A real confidence boost. There are front and rear parking sensors to dodge any bumps during parking and keep the scratches at bay, priced at £1,350 and because you can’t see much out of the back you can buy a rear view camera for £1,440. But I would not bother with the £2520 sound package because when the car is on the go, and the decibles are high, it is a waste of money. Oh, and by the way, the Huracan’s pretty and eyecatching spectacular, but extraordinary paint job with a matt-blue finish and blindingly bright red hood, would set you back £11,250. All in all, if you go along with every one of the considerable number of extras offered you could run up a final bill of £229,536..... From a practical viewpoint the car is superbly turned out with a perfectly balanced chassis, which tightens its line if you lift off the accelerator, but it still gives you enough grip at the rear end to boost your confidence and trust in its behaviour. I don’t know what his response was, if ever he drove it, but Pope Francis was given one as a prezzie. But I would bet he would enjoy a hymn or two on the car’s ultra-wonderful sound system. There was a spell when Lambos left a bit to be desired in contrast with rival supercars - but not any more. Not with this beauty...

Happy Motoring!

Are You Ready for Pregnancy? Being healthy before you start trying for a baby can help your chances of conceiving and going on to have a happy and healthy pregnancy and birth. Making a few small changes to your lifestyle can make a big difference for you and your baby. NHS health and care services across Surrey have come together to launch a 12-month campaign called #ReadyforPregnancy to raise awareness of things women and their partners can do before conception to improve fertility, pregnancy health and their baby’s future health. Eating healthily and watching your weight Eating a healthy, nutritious diet is especially important if you’re planning a pregnancy. Your baby relies on you to provide the right balance of nutrients to help them grow and develop properly even after they are born. By aiming for a healthy weight, you increase your chances of conceiving naturally and having a healthy pregnancy and baby. Being overweight when you become pregnant can affect the way your baby develops in the womb and it also increases the risk of miscarriage. Going smoke-free Quitting smoking is the most important thing you and your partner can do to give your baby the best start in life. If you are planning a pregnancy or are already expecting, talk to your GP practice, midwife or local stop smoking service about the support available for both of you to quit. Getting in to shape If you’re not used to exercising, or haven’t done any in a while, now is a good time to start. Try starting with 10 minutes of daily activity and build up to 30 minutes each day. The more active and fit you are during pregnancy, the easier it will be for you to adapt to your changing shape and weight gain. It will also help you to cope with labour and get back into shape after the birth.

Taking food supplements Taking a folic acid supplement when you are trying to conceive until you’re 12 weeks pregnant is really beneficial. It can reduce the risk of problems in your baby’s development in the early weeks of pregnancy and lessen birth defects such as spina bifida. The NHS recommends taking 400 micrograms of folic acid every day as well as eating foods that contain folate such as leafy green vegetables. Find out more about preparing for your pregnancy by searching online for ‘Ready for Pregnancy Surrey’ and #ReadyForPregnancy on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Refurbished Skate Park Opens at Leatherhead Leisure Centre

Specialist company Fearless Ramps’ dynamic skate park design has been installed at Leatherhead Leisure Centre and can now be enjoyed by eager riders of a skateboard, BMX or scooter, ready to test themselves on the new and improved layout and riding surface.

we have certainly achieved that and more with this refurbished facility, and I would like to thank everyone who took part in our consultations. They helped inform what was constructed, and this could not have been achieved without their input.

Mole Valley District Council’s key play-related refurbishment project of 2019/20 saw the old facility’s ramps and half pipe removed and replaced with new heavy duty steel frame equipment. The new ramps and half pipe all have the popular Skatelite pro riding surface, which was keenly desired in the feedback received from users and local residents in the public consultations.

“I am confident that news of this revitalised site will inspire people from other parts of the district and hopefully further afield to test themselves on the new equipment in addition, of course, to welcoming back existing users of this skate park, who I am sure will enjoy a far greater experience and challenge.”

Fearless Ramps’ proposal was overwhelmingly the most popular option put forward. It is hoped that work to install the new equipment over the summer will meet the vision and expectations that existing users and the many respondents to the consultations had for the site. Councillor David Draper, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “I am delighted to see that the now vastly improved and more modern skate park at Leatherhead Leisure Centre is ready for people of all ages to try out for themselves. The old facility was tired and outdated and there were plenty of examples of skate parks in other areas in Surrey that we aspired to. In my view, 38 LookLocal - OCTOBER 2020

Dealing with domestic abuse NEIL CLARKE, 13362 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION

At this time of year, I would normally be reminding people about keeping safe around Halloween and Bonfire Night but, as with so many other traditional occasions when family and friends get together, 2020 is proving to be different in so many respects!! Even the traditional big Bonfire at Brockham Green is not going to take place this year, along with many other planned events that are part of many people’s social calendar. In spite of all the new rules and guidance that we are all being required to follow; crime and anti-social behaviour is still happening – although perhaps the nature of those “activities” has changed in some respects? Of course everyone should be following the prescribed rules in terms of trying to control the spread of Covid-19 and officers have been targeting key locations where reports have been received about “mass gatherings” etc. Alongside this work, however, is the ongoing and regular demand to deal with serious offenders – burglars, thieves, people who commit wanton criminal damage and, of course, the victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. It is worth mentioning that, on average, a person may have been subjected to over twenty separate incidents of serious domestic abuse (and sometimes many more) before they can find the courage to report it to police. Once a case of domestic abuse is brought to our attention, there are clear and sensitive guidelines, and regulations that must be followed, in order to protect the

victim as well as bring the alleged perpetrator to justice. In the past, domestic abuse was regarded as only having taken place where one person has inflicted physical violence on another person in the same household. Nowadays, it is recognised that domestic abuse can take many forms and be just as damaging as actual physical abuse. Prolonged controlling behaviour, undermining a person’s self-worth and self-confidence are also considered, quite rightly, to be forms of domestic abuse. Often however, these more “invisible” abuses can make it even more difficult for the victim to realise what is happening and to have the courage to report it. Victims are often made to feel stupid and worthless – dependent on the perpetrator of the abuse for their every need. They can be conditioned to believe that any abuse is their own fault and it takes a huge amount of courage and effort to take the first step to tell even close family or friends – that is, of course, assuming that those relationships have not been undermined by the perpetrator of domestic abuse.
