DIRECTOR’S VIEW The exhibition Magical and Real: Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, A Retrospective just came down. This oncein-a-lifetime experience at the Museum, including the fantastic lecture series, provided a special opportunity for a much expanded view of the lifetime of work realized by Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth. As with many praiseworthy projects, it began with a bit of curiosity on the part of then curator of the James A. Michener Art Museum, Kirsten M. Jensen, and a willingness to take part in the journey mixed with much hard work by Sara Woodbury and other staff at the Roswell Museum as well as many, many supporters including lenders, funders, scholars, conservators, designers, and additional groups and individuals. Thanks to everyone who took part in this incredible achievement. It’s arrived! The Roswell Science and Art Festival will take place on Saturday, October 13 at the Museum from 10 am to 4 pm. UT Austin Chemistry Professor Dr. Kate Biberdorf will highlight the day with a stage performance at 11 am that will be sure to wow attendees of all ages. An exhibit of 70 Rube Goldberg machines created by area middle school students will be on display (think of the game Mouse Trap). The science centers Explora from Albuquerque and Science Spectrum from Lubbock will be on site joining other local and regional organizations, agencies and institutions for displays, presentations and hands-on science and art activities. Roswell Film Festival will present a curated series of science fiction shorts. We wish to thank our sponsors Xcel Energy, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the RMAC Foundation for their very generous support, as well as the many participating groups and individuals that have contributed to this event. Xcel Energy is also helping the Museum embark on another significant project, a complete relighting of the facility. Over the next several months, the galleries, auditorium, classrooms, offices—50,000 square feet of public areas and workspaces in total—will receive an LED lighting upgrade. If you’ve ever taken a look up while at the Museum, you may have observed the variety

3 Fall 2018

of lighting fixtures representing decades of changes and expansions at the Museum. While the lighting has served the Museum and its visitors well, with Xcel Energy and the City of Roswell’s support, the lighting will be retrofitted and replaced with the latest LED technology. Like the LED bulbs you may have in your homes, the lighting quality and energy efficiency will be vastly improved and the high-quality fixtures will make lighting our exhibitions a much-improved experience for our curatorial staff. Thanks is extended to the many individuals at Xcel Energy, Energy Resources, J&G Electric, Elliot Electric Supply, and the City of Roswell for making this project a reality. We are offering a new adult workshop this fall led by Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson called Make and Mingle. The open studio format allows you to come in on a Thursday night to relax and enjoy learning about a medium in a low-pressure, social environment. Please help spread the word and make sure to sign up for at least one. You’ll be glad you did. See you at the Museum!

EXHIBITIONS

Joshua Hagler

Roswell Artist-in-Residence In Love Letters to the Poorly Regarded, Joshua Hagler presents a group of new paintings, each addressed to specific individuals such as Tonya Harding, Zachary and Nicholas Cruz (Parkland school shooter and his brother), and even his own great great grandfather Arastas. Several large canvases around eight by nine feet depict a range

EXHIBITION Joshua Hagler: Roswell Artistin-Residence November 3, 2018 - January 6, 2019 Marshall and Winston Gallery Lecture and Reception: Friday, November 2, 5:30-7 pm

of subjects from Harding’s famous triple axel to the Cruz brothers hugging each other in a police interrogation room. Hagler layers history, politics, and mythology in the work, literally stripping away layers of paint to reveal the history of the painting itself. In Longlegs, a large mixed-media canvas, the artist references an early photograph of Arastas who is known to have purchased a Cherokee woman to be his wife. The Native American myth of the Great White Long Legs, who is described by the wandering spider Iktome as having legs full of cleverness, but no wisdom, is layered into the work and informs the artists’ imagination of his forebears.

Hagler’s “love letters” lean into those he imagines few would want to be associated with but toward whom he is inexplicably drawn. The move rejects intense Art World expectations that art should abide approved ideological frameworks, proffering instead that art ought to resist merely reaffirming safe political convictions, even if it means implicating oneself. The work does not try to justify its subject matter, but rather seeks, more simply, to touch it.

Still Life EXHIBITION Still Life November 17, 2018 - April 1, 2019 Entry Gallery

Joseph Henry Sharpe, Peonies, ca. 1930s, oil on linen, 37” x 43”. Gift of the Elizabeth A. Malone Estate.

For centuries, still life painting has been an important artistic genre. More than a depiction of objects, artists have used this subject to discuss broader themes of mortality, wealth, cultural exchange, and other ideas. In New Mexico in particular, still life has been used as a means to explore this state’s rich and complex multicultural heritage, with artists painting santos, blankets and other objects that highlight Spanish and Native American influences. In more contemporary works, artists have used still life to comment on the commodification of culture, or the significance of everyday life. Through these objects, artists comment on the tactile nature of lived reality, reflecting on how objects can shape our everyday existence. Drawn from the permanent collection, Still Life offers an exploration of this genre. Encompassing a selection of both historical

8 Roswell Museum and Art Center

and contemporary New Mexican art, this grouping highlights the variety of the Museum’s collection itself. From B.J.O. Nordfeldt to Robert Ellis, come check out some compelling works that look at objects through an artistic lens.

Made in New Mexico

EXHIBITION Made in New Mexico December 1, 2018, longterm display Patricia Gaylord Anderson Gallery

Barbara Latham, Indian Riders in the Sage, n.d. oil on canvas Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Winston. 1972.013.0001

New Mexico is home to a lot of great things, from important historical sites and diverse state parks to roasted green and red chilies. It’s also a land rich with artistic traditions, and continues to be an inspiration to artists today. Native artists and craftsmen have been working here for centuries, while artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe and Marsden Hartley have traveled here seeking new ideas for their work. Today New Mexico continues to attract artists from around the world, whether they seek the mountains of Santa Fe or the unique community of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program. Art has always been one of New Mexico’s strongest assets, and will undoubtedly continue to be one of its defining features in the twenty-first century. Drawn from the Museum’s extensive collection, Made in New Mexico is a semi-permanent exhibition highlighting the diverse art world of this remarkable state. From the indigenous traditions of Native American potters or Spanish American santeros, to the creative communities of the Taos Art Colony and the Roswell Artist-inResidence Program, New Mexico is a place that is rich with its own creative traditions while simultaneously attracting new artistic ideas and influences from around the world. The works in this show will reflect a range of subjects and styles, but all share the common bond of being made in the Land of Enchantment. Pieces from this show will be periodically rotated to keep the installation fresh and interesting, so be sure to visit often!

9 Fall 2018

Life Along the Rio Grande Quilting has become an increasingly diverse and prominent art form since the late twentieth century. What was once considered primarily a craft, is rightfully being appreciated as an art form, with artists creating a diverse range of works. From naturalistic, pictorial quilts to expressive, nonobjective works, quilts have become as diverse as the contemporary art world itself, reflecting new and different ideas as more people contribute to its ongoing development as art. Organized by Studio Art Quilt Associates, this exhibition highlights contemporary art quilting in the Southwest. Taking inspiration from the theme, “Life Along the Rio Grande,” the final selections include digital, thread painting, hand painting, printing and sculptural work. Some pieces express a political or environmental message, while others exemplify beauty and craftsmanship. There are bright, luminescent and bold works, juxtaposed with others exuding subtlety and quietness. What all of these works share, however, is a love of both the Southwest and of quilting as an art form.

Your support and donations to the Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation make dreams come true and ensures the Museum’s legacy of excellence continues. This past year some of the highlights that the Foundation’s donors helped fund included the digital conversion and upgrade to the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, the exhibition Magical & Real: Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, A Retrospective, pARTy After Hours, the Roswell Science and Art Festival, and numerous scholarships for both children and adults to the fabulous art classes at the Museum. Opened in 1937 the original Museum building included a main gallery with a performance stage and a side gallery. Community support has grown the Museum over the years. As wonderful as the Museum is today, it is important that we continue to maintain and update this significant community asset. Caroline Brooks, the RMAC Executive Director has proposed a ten-year plan of exciting projects to continue the growth and improvement of our Museum. We are currently in the early planning stages for the creation of a Family Discovery Gallery and enhancement of the Museum entrance. The new gallery will have self-led art, history and science activities for our young visitors, the future generation of artist, historians, and scientists. Long-range projects include the re-interpretation of the Robert H. Goddard collection using updated storytelling techniques and a Collections Wing addition with visible storage to allow more of the Museum’s growing collection to be on display to visitors. The future is bright for the Museum and with your support our Museum will continue to shine.
