FROM THE DIRECTOR This issue of the Museum Magazine highlights an amazing amount of creativity and effort put forth by RMAC’s staff, volunteers and partners in the development of exhibitions, events, classes and other programming that defines the Museum and its place in the community. I’m humbled to be a part of the effort and on behalf of the Museum, Boards and the City of Roswell, I encourage you to continue to take advantage of all that we offer. Our first year of Summer Art Camps have just come to a close and were a hit with students, parents and instructors. The camps, designed for age 4 through 8th grade, enabled 39 youngsters to explore fun themes like nature and time travel through the media of painting, sculpture, printmaking and music. I wish to thank all of our talented teaching artists who made the month so successful: Aria Finch, Amanda Nicholson, Jessica Haynes, Gretchen Phillips, Bailey Coll, and Julie Murphy. Another important addition is a fresh take on our membership program. Over the course of several months, staff conducted research and held meetings and informal discussions with some of our current members, the RMAC Board of Trustees and City Council to determine the best attributes for our membership program. While revenue is sometimes an underlying factor for membership programs, we did not see it as the primary motivation for RMAC’s. Instead we have chosen to focus on aspects that we feel encourage participation and deepen members’ relationships with the Museum. As a result, we’ve simplified the program down to five categories, which we felt best met the interests of our current and future members, and capped the program at a $100 level. We anticipate the simplification will encourage participation, and we also hope that those who are able to afford a larger contribution will sign up for our top tier membership, the Enthusiast, while also considering a tax-deductible charitable donation to the RMAC Foundation whose funds provide direct support for many of the Museum’s offerings from class scholarships

and the Gratton Workshops to pARTy After Hours, Roswell Science and Art Festival, Family After Hours and much more. The new Enthusiast level also includes an exclusive benefit of membership in the North American Reciprocal Museum Association which grants free admission or discounts to more than 1,000 museums from regional favorites like the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History to museums in cities you may travel to such as the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, The Drawing Center or the Studio Museum in New York. Thank you for your past and continued support. We hope you find these changes as exciting as we do. This July is a big month in space history and for the Goddard Planetarium’s programming. Check out all the activities on the next page from Space Camp (both as a film and a kids camp!) to new full-dome films and participation in the Global Rocket Launch as part of the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing. pARTy After Hours and Family After Hours return in August. If you are unfamiliar with the events, pARTy is a fun, Friday night event for adults ages 21 and over and Family After Hours is a weeknight art outing for families with children of all ages presented in partnership with RISD’s Arts Connect program. Both are designed to meet community needs and interests, while making art and culture a more accessible, relevant and integral part of your lives. The events are free to attend and are scheduled twice per year in the spring and fall. Upcoming themes relate to the exhibitions Decades and Coloring Inside the Lines and should again be crowd-pleasers from 1940s dance instruction and music to hands-on art projects exploring color, line and shape. On September 7, in partnership with the African American Museum and Cultural Center of New Mexico, we are presenting the conclusion of the two-part panel discussion on African American homesteading in New Mexico in coordination with the traveling exhibition The Virtue of Ownership. September’s discussion will focus on Jim Crow laws and school segregation. Have a happy, safe and positively memorable summer.

George Rodart Roswell Artist in-Residence combines simple abstract shapes of cut paper to create larger solid forms which become the central characters of his paintings. In 2016, Rodart completed the first hundred paintings from this series. Then he began planning the next stage, extending his vision into much larger works. Following his move to New Mexico, Rodart’s approach became less traditional, more graphic, and closer to a billboard than a painting.

George Rodart’s exhibition of ten large-scale paintings explore the Opening Reception: liminal zone between abstraction Friday, July 19 and representation. Utilizing 5:30 pm: Lecture accident and free association, he 6-7 pm: Reception
George Rodart was exposed to the arts at a young age, and as a boy took painting classes at the Pasadena Art Museum. He initially studied physics and briefly worked
in the computer industry and on the Apollo space project. He received his MFA from UCLA where he studied painting with Richard Diebenkorn. Rodart was included in the 1975 and the 1983 Whitney Biennials. In 1983 he won a Guggenheim award for painting. For more information on the artist, please visit www.georgerodart.com.

Decades: 1930s and 1940s EXHIBITION Decades: 1930s and 1940s August 24, 2019 February 9, 2020 Marshall and Winston Gallery
The art that is produced in any given era gives later audiences a small glimpse of what it was like to live in that time period. That is the idea behind the Decades series of exhibitions that will be featured at RMAC over the next four years. We begin with the 1930s and 1940s, partly because the Museum was founded in 1937, and partly because of our rich holdings from these decades.
8 Roswell Museum and Art Center
The 1930s is best understood as the decade of the Great Depression, so some of the artworks in this show reflect concerns about work and daily life. Others display an exciting modernity of form and line that was pretty new at the time, drawing from
Cubist and Art Deco styles. The 1940s were dominated by the events of World War II and the burgeoning Cold War, and some of that fear and bravery will be on view, but also visible will be the beginnings of Abstract Expressionism and what today we call Modern Art. To enhance the visitor’s immersion in the 1930s and 1940s, RMAC intends to have era appropriate music playing quietly in the Paul Horgan Gallery. It’ll be sure to get you “In the Mood.” The next show in this series will be Decades: 1950s, opening in February 2020, and Decades: 1960s, opening in August 2020. Every six months, we’ll move forward ten years to see what has changed in American culture. Please join us for this time-traveling adventure.

Collection News Santero Visit provides Insights Dr. James Córdova visited the Roswell Museum in May to consult on our santos (New Mexican saints) collection. His deep knowledge as a scholar and practicing santero (saint-maker) provided a great deal of new information about a few of the works in the Museum’s collection.
Erica Bailey
Roswell Artist in-Residence EXHIBITION Erica Bailey: Roswell Artist inResidence September 21 November 10, 2019 Marshall and Winston Gallery Opening Reception: Friday, September 20 5:30 pm: Lecture 6-7 pm: Reception
Detail from multimedia installation in progress, 2019, diorama (extruded polystyrene, joint compound, paint, wood, coffee grounds, cellophane, LED lights, video, monitor), 48” x 36” x 32”. Courtesy of the Artist
Erica Bailey explores perceptions of time and space through installations that combine dioramas and video. She frequently turns to vernacular architecture for subject matter, seeing it as a primary means by which we delimit space and order our understanding of it. Her work exhibits a fascination with spatial binaries such as inside/ outside, close/remote, and often references events that unfold over unfathomable expanses of time and distance or realities beyond our natural means of perception. Her new installation for RMAC will include four dioramas set in the prehistoric past, the recent past, the present, and the distant future, affording a quasi time travel and expressing a longing to understand the significance of individual experience within the scale of humankind and beyond. Erica Bailey is a Bronx-based visual artist, originally from a small-town, working-class family in Ohio. She moved to New York in 2012 after accepting a position with The City College of New York managing the sculpture facilities. Recent exhibitions include: Bronx Calling: The Third AIM Biennial, Bronx Museum of the Arts; Its memory, the memory of its ribs, its knees, its shoulders, Smack Mellon, Brooklyn; and So Close, Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space, Lower East Side, Manhattan. Previous residencies include: NARS Foundation Artist in Residency Program, BronxArtSpace Summer Residency, and the LES Studio Program, a program of Artists Alliance, Inc. For more information on the artist, please visit www.ericabailey.net.
9 Summer 2019
His most exciting finding was in regards to two retablos. The first is an image of San Ramon Novato that was given to the Museum in 1979 by Mrs. J. Daniel Lamon, Jr. The artist was listed in our files as Anonymous and the dates given were from 1800-1850. Dr. Córdova also noticed an image of Jesus on the cross with Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) to his right and an unidentified male saint to his left. This second work was donated to us in 1993 by Emily Abbott Nordfeldt, and both the artist and date were unknown. Based on a few stylistic similarities, Dr. Córdova suspected that both of these pieces, although donated to the Museum fourteen years apart and by different donors, were actually by the same artist from the Taos area or at least followers of the same artist. The retablos are most likely by an artist known as Antonio Molleno who worked from about 1800-1830. There are not many Molleno retablos around, but some of the details are unmistakable. Most especially, Dr. Córdova noticed the mouths of the figures which were painted by making a red dot and drawing a horizontal line through that. No other santero painted mouths in this way. There were also details in terms of hands, backgrounds, and body positioning that suggested Molleno as well. Dr. Córdova concedes that in the crucifixion scene, Molleno might only have painted the figure of Christ and left the other saints to his apprentices, but it is still very much from the school of Molleno. We’re grateful to Dr. Córdova for discerning the artist of these pieces. It not only gives us more information that we can share with visitors, but makes RMAC a necessary stop for scholars and santeros who study and make New Mexican santos. Artist Unknown (Attributed to Antonio Molleno), San Ramon Novato, c. 1800-1830, oil on gesso on wood. Gift of Mrs. J. Daniel Lamon, Jr.
STAFF NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS
Two new staff have recently joined the RMAC team. Julia Pope began in June as the Museum Preparator, replacing Jim Wheeler who moved to Oregon after a short, but well-appreciated tenure at the Museum. Julia grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida and has volunteered and worked for museums for six years, including most recently as an assistant preparator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from the New College of Florida with a focus on sculpture. Some of her biggest strengths are working with her hands and problem solving. She enjoys learning new materials, methods and tools to provide the best solution possible whether for an exhibition installation or sculpture project. As Preparator, Julia will aid in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, provide maintenance of the items while on view as well as other support tasks in the curatorial department. Flannery Barney just started at the Museum in July as the Assistant Registrar. This is a new position that is an update from the Librarian and Archivist position held by Candace Jordan for 22 years until her retirement in 2018. In her role, Flannery will manage the library and archives with a focus on digitization of the archive materials, as well as an added responsibility of assisting with the behind-the-scenes duties of caring for the collection and exhibition needs. Flannery is from Las Cruces and recently finished her BFA at New Mexico State University in Museum Conservation where she also worked as an Assistant Collections Manager. She volunteered at the Chinati Foundation as a docent last summer and previously worked as an artist assistant for Sharbani Das Gupta, who coincidentally will be having an exhibition at RMAC this fall. Flannery enjoys painting in her spare time and recently had her paintings exhibited in New York. They are both looking forward to getting to know the Museum and its collections as well the community over the coming months.

Angela Cervera assists a student during June’s Art Camp.
Student Spotlight RMAC would like to congratulate long-time clay student Angela Cervera on her acceptance to the New Mexico School for the Arts, the only four-year, public high school that serves students across New Mexico with rigorous and award-winning arts and academic education. Angela began taking clay classes with RMAC instructor Aria Finch when she was just 6 years old and received drawing instruction from Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson over the past year. After completing a successful scholarship competition with a stellar portfolio, Angela begins a new chapter in her life at NMSA in Santa Fe this August. Aria shared that “Angela has developed into a caring, talented apprentice over the years.” Angela will be joining the NMSA Visual Arts Department with the long-term goal to become an educator for young adults in visual arts. The four-year Visual Arts curriculum at the school is designed to expose students to a breadth of visual arts experiences from art history instruction to diverse materials, tools and processes (including 2D, 3D, and 4D – digital and analog). The program helps prepare them for an arts career and further study at college. The program challenges students through projects and frequent critiques of their work with the aim “to grow students’ critical, making, and creative problem solving skills, and the self-awareness needed to be successful in any field as engaged, self-expressed citizens.” Congratulations, Angela, on this exceptional achievement, we at RMAC can’t wait to watch you excel at NMSA and beyond!
