DIRECTOR’S VIEW The Museum’s staff, trustees, and the RMAC Foundation Board of Directors are very pleased to announce the exhibition Magical & Real: Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, A Retrospective has opened at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The Roswell Museum and Art Center co-organized the exhibition with the Michener Museum, which presents a rare opportunity to bring together paintings by the renowned artists from several public and private collections. We are honored to be a part of the project and are proud to join the Michener Museum in congratulating exhibition co-curators Sara Woodbury and Kirsten M. Jensen for their efforts. The exhibition will travel to Roswell and open with a reception on Friday, June 15. On Saturday, June 16 at 2 pm a panel discussion with Woodbury and Jensen will be presented followed by a lecture by Jensen on Henriette Wyeth at 3 pm. Saturday’s presentations are part of a series supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council which will continue through the length of the exhibition, bringing scholars to New Mexico to further engage with the public and explore the place Wyeth and Hurd hold in the history of American art. The exhibition will be on display at the Roswell Museum and Art Center through September 16. Be sure to visit the show and bring friends and family to experience these incredibly beautiful works of art. A welldesigned, scholarly catalogue accompanies the exhibition and will be available in the Museum Store beginning in June. Two other events being presented this quarter are pARTy After Hours on Friday, April 27 and Family Science Night on Thursday, May 3. Both events fit within our strategic plan to build audiences with a focus on families and millennials. As the baby boomer generation ages, events like these are central to keeping the Museum relevant to engage younger generations as visitors,

volunteers, members, board members and donors. This generational shift also means experimenting with programming that provides innovative experiences, being open and flexible, and having a commitment to building long-term relationships. Another program we are experimenting with are our noon-hour Brown Bag Lunch Talks which supports everyone’s busy lifestyles and encourages people to take a break from their day, relax and listen in on an interesting topic. Staff members Amanda Nicholson and Jeremy Howe are two upcoming presenters. Nicholson will teach an art bookmaking session titled “Books and Bites” during her lunchtime presentation, while Howe will draw from his mineralogical background to speak on the history of the use of uranium in ceramic glazes. A third session will include several staff presenters and will explore a short-term exhibition titled Staff Favorites with diverse works selected from the Permanent Collection. We invite you to engage with the Museum. Attend an event or exhibition, volunteer, become a member, donate to a project or cause and voice your ideas. We’re happy you’re here. You are a part of helping us make a difference and creating a positive quality of life in the Roswell community.

barrier, while glazes turn into an extremely powerful emotion that always finds its way to the outer reality. For Deroualle, cultural and language barriers provoke a sense of displacement and generate a wide range of emotional reactions that shape her perception of and interaction with the outer world. These encounters can inspire curiosity, encouraging her to learn more about her own culture and personal way of interacting with the surrounding environment, while at other times frustration and loneliness prevails. Deroualle translates these feelings into her objects through expressive surfaces created by the layering of ceramic materials. Like her own skin, the surfaces of her pieces are thin and fragile barriers between the internal and external world. And like skin, the cracks, blisters, and wrinkles that texture the surfaces of her works record time and stories, veiling and yet revealing who we are. Education News EXHIBITION Magical & Real: Henriette Wyeth & Peter Hurd June 16 September 16, 2018 Patricia Gaylord Anderson, Entry and Spring River Galleries Opening Weekend Events: Reception: Friday, June 15, 5-7 pm Panel Discussion with Exhibition Co-Curators Kirsten M. Jensen & Sara Woodbury: Saturday, June 16 at 2 pm Lecture by Kirsten M. Jensen: The Life and Work of Henriette Wyeth: Saturday, June 16 at 3 pm
Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd are two of southeastern New Mexico’s most significant and beloved artists. Born and raised in Roswell, Hurd studied art with renowned illustrator N.C. Wyeth during the 1920s in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. In 1929, Hurd married N.C.’s eldest daughter, fellow artist Henriette, and the two eventually settled west of Roswell in San Patricio. Hurd became renowned for his luminous egg tempera landscapes and portraits capturing the arid beauty of southeast New Mexico, while Wyeth focused on still life and portraiture, creating paintings that showcased her technical skills as a painter as well as her poetic sensibilities. While many visitors to the Roswell Museum and Art Center are familiar with the southwestern output of Wyeth and Hurd, both artists painted and exhibited their work on a national scale, and merit national recognition in the history of American art. Co-organized with the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Magical & Real is the first scholarly exhibition to seriously consider the work of either artist in thirty years. The exhibition re-situates Wyeth and Hurd into the larger dialogue of American art in the 20th century, with the aim of broadening awareness of the entire scope of their work while grappling with the tensions that exist between the eastern and western arts communities. Magical & Real will include approximately 70 paintings, with works coming from private collections as well as public museums. The Roswell Museum and Art Center collection forms a substantial part of the show, underscoring the national significance of our holdings. An illustrated, scholarly catalogue will also accompany the exhibition. Magical & Real: Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd, A Retrospective is generously supported in great part by the RMAC Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The second year of the pre-k planetarium program, Space Look and Storybook, was a great success this past February with over 20 students attending each week. During this four session program children ages 3 ½ through 6 walked on the Moon, explored the solar system and our planet’s orbits, sang songs, experienced our full-dome capabilities, created their own constellations, played and wondered. Planetarium Coordinator Jeremy Howe and Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson provided children with experiences focused on learning through play and sparking curiosity for Earth and space science. The education department plans to expand upon these types of hands-on Planetarium programs to older ages as well as continuing to provide the Space Look and Storybook program to little ones. To encourage closer looking and inquiry on art’s intersection with narrative, Curator of Education, Amanda Nicholson created a magnetic poetry board to accompany the exhibition Pennsylvania Impressionists in the Founders’ Gallery. The exhibition displays work from the James A. Michener Art Museum which is partnering with RMAC on the special exhibition Magical & Real: Henriette Wyeth & Peter Hurd, A Retrospective. The interactive gallery experience includes writing prompts directly pertaining to the works shown and encourages visitors of all ages to explore art through narrative writing and poetry. The exhibition and activity continues through May 31.

On Tuesday, March 13, the Museum participated in Berrendo Middle School’s first annual Family Science Night. Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson and volunteers Carolyn Madison, Daniel Burns, Ryan Cortez and Dr. Mel Loucks led students through the steps of creating doodle bots. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 explored the intersections of art and science through the use of circuits and motors to make simple robots that “doodle” and spin on their own to make circular and orbiting patterns. Planetarium Coordinator Jeremy Howe lent his science expertise to East Grand Plains Elementary School for a STEM Night that included hands-on activities and a mobile planetarium. Jeremy talked to approximately 120 students about constellations inside the unique inflatable planetarium, which the school borrowed from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at the Very Large Array in Socorro.
