FROM THE DIRECTOR The 2nd annual Roswell Science and Art Festival is taking place on Saturday, October 12 from 10 am - 4 pm next door at the Roswell Convention Center. Kevin Delaney, from the Tonight Show and Street Science, will be headlining the event at 11 am with a spectacular stage presentation. There will be lots of hands-on activities and demonstrations for all ages to have fun and be inspired. We have some new additions to the event this year, including the return of Chalk Art, the Department of Cultural Affairs’ mobile museum with space materials curated by the New Mexico Museum of Space History, fire safety and drone obstacle courses led by the Roswell Fire Department and AirPlay Media, a pre-K area called Tinker Tots, family yoga, inflatable planetarium shows, and much more. We are deeply grateful to the Xcel Energy Foundation and the RMAC Foundation for making this event possible. In order to support events such as the Festival, Family After Hours, pARTy After Hours and class scholarships, the RMAC Foundation requests your help. Each year, the Foundation carries out an annual appeal campaign, which combined with the spring fundraiser, helps raise a good portion of the annual support the Foundation provides to the Museum. Every amount helps. If you are able to contribute something, an envelope is included in this issue of the Magazine for your convenience. There is a flurry of activity at the Museum as we ready several exciting exhibitions this fall. Sharbani Das Gupta has been busily preparing for her ceramics and mixed media installations in her studio in Las Cruces for her exhibition titled In/Sight, which opens on October 25. A former Roswell resident, Das Gupta is excited to reconnect with the local arts community and share some of her new works at the Museum. A Line in the Sand, part of the 516 ARTS Species in

Peril Along the Rio Grande collaboration, was proposed by biologist Alexis Harrison and co-curated with fellow biologist Tracy Diver with assistance by RMAC Curator Aubrey Hobart. The aim of the exhibition is to explore species documented in the U.S. Mexico border surveys conducted in the 1800s. How might biologists today document the same species, how have their habitats changed? The project began with a small collection of survey prints and has blossomed to include current artistic interpretations by scientists of the originallydocumented animal species as well as contemporary artists exploring parts the original boundary reports and the concept of borders. Axle Contemporary is an art gallery and studio on wheels founded in 2010 by Matthew Chase-Daniel and Jerry Wellman of Santa Fe. One of their more recent projects, E Pluribus Unum (Latin for “Out of many, one”), has been presented in several locations throughout the state and is made up of photographs taken of community members with a personal object of their choosing. RMAC is proud to have been selected to exhibit the Southeast edition which includes participants from the communities of Roswell, Lovington, Hobbs, Alamogordo, Tularosa, Carrizozo, Ruidoso, Mescalero, Carlsbad, Artesia, Portales, and Clovis. Chase-Daniel and Wellman will be giving a gallery talk during the Holiday Open House on December 7. We hope you can make it! And, don’t forget to take a look at the classes and workshops being presented by newcomer Bailey Coll. We’re excited to add her to our talented group of artist instructors and we encourage you to register for one or several of her multi-age offerings. See you at the Museum and have a safe and happy holiday season!

EXHIBITIONS EXHIBITION Sharbani Das Gupta: In/Sight October 26, 2019 April 5, 2020 Donald B. Anderson Gallery Reception: Friday, October 25, 5-7 pm
Sharbani Das Gupta In/Sight Splitting her time between India and the United States, Sharbani Das Gupta uses the perspective she gains from her travels to create immersive environments that give viewers the opportunity to enter an alternative kind of space. Das Gupta has a keen awareness of the human impact on the planet, and she often explores the ecological and social residues of political upheaval. Her allegorical rather than confrontational approach opens a space for empathy and understanding while still emphasizing the need for action.
She uses her work to draw attention to the not-so-hidden, but often disregarded, links between ourselves and the worlds we inhabit and impact. Sharbani Das Gupta exhibits her work internationally, writes, curates and frequently presents at clayrelated events around the world. She was a core member of the Curatorial and Working Committee for Breaking Ground in 2018, the first Indian Ceramic Triennale held in Jaipur. A member of the

J. H. Richard, Western Coachwhip, in Report on the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey, Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of the Interior (Washington D.C.: C. Wendell, 18571859).
The political boundary between the United States and Mexico has an unstable history, with both the location and the importance of the border shifting across this remote region over time. If not for the geographers, surveyors, and scientists sent to map the border, the secretive animals of the mountains, deserts, and rivers might have evaded notice for a long time. Instead, over the course of the 1800s many expeditions passed through this region, collecting and illustrating the animals they discovered. Co-curated by biologists Tracy Diver and Alexis Harrison, this exhibition explores the stories of some of these animals, from the observations of early explorers to contemporary artistic representations of these same species, with notes on the current state of scientific knowledge about each, and thoughts on how the changing nature of the border may affect the wildlife living along it. This event is part of the Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande regional collaboration, coordinated by 516 ARTS in Albuquerque. For more information visit 516arts.org.

Axle Contemporary
E Pluribus Unum: New Mexico Southeast In 2012, the Axle artistcollaborators, Jerry Wellman and Matthew Chase-Daniel, began a photographic portrait project, E Pluribus Unum. This ongoing project enlivens and documents communities throughout the state of New Mexico with a mobile photographic portrait studio built inside a vintage aluminum vehicle.

In October 2018, Wellman and Chase-Daniel brought their mobile studio to southeast New Mexico to photograph the diversity of the people who live here. Participants each brought a small object of personal significance, and sat for a black and white portrait while holding the object. Objects have included car keys, photos of loved ones, artworks, tools, books, food, toys, and vintage collectibles.
Two copies of each portrait were printed with the studio’s solar-powered printer. One was given to the participant and the other was pasted to the exterior of the vehicle, creating a mobile and growing exhibition throughout the region. At the end of the project, Axle Contemporary transferred the portraits to banners which will hang in RMAC’s Entry Gallery, greeting all visitors with an array of faces of the people who call southeast New Mexico home. The artists will give a talk during the Holiday Open House. A book about their project, with portraits of the participants and essays by Chase-Daniel and Wellman, as well as a forward by Joshua Wheeler, will be available.

Cedra Wood The Water Waxes Deeper Still
Winter Celebrations
Roswell Artist-In-Residence Cedra Wood has long been in the grip of an obsession: the eerie, visceral, and unsettling tales found in ancient Scottish and English ballads. For her exhibition at RMAC, she presents paintings inspired by this fixation. Ranging from darkly funny to moody and morbid, the miniature works depict transmuted snakes, prophetic selkies, wax babies, and other elements meant to evoke an eldritch time and place—a lyrical and symbolic otherworld that has been perpetuated by word of mouth for centuries.
EXHIBITION Cedra Wood: Roswell Artistin-Residence November 23, 2019 - January 12, 2020 Marshall and Winston Gallery Lecture and Opening Reception: Friday, November 22, 5:30-7pm
In addition to these balladbased works, six larger paintings and their accompanying props represent Wood’s first attempt to communicate the haunted doublevision through which she sees the American West, infusing landscapes with supernatural remembrances and inventions, creating unearthly contemporary narratives.

FOUNDATION NEWS In 1987, a small group of community leaders came together to form the Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation. Since its inception, the goal of the RMAC Foundation has been to support the Roswell Museum and Art Center by providing financial resources to develop programs that inspire learning and creative exchange, assist in operation and maintenance, and support the Museum’s growth through capital improvement projects. Tax dollars can only go so far to improving the quality of life in a community. It is the individuals in the community that enhance our city with support and donations to the non-profits that serve our citizens. The Foundation’s funding comes directly from our community, through donations to the annual appeal, fundraising events, and bequests. A single donation when combined with other donations can make a significant impact on a community. Donors to the Foundation have contributed over a million dollars directly to the Museum during the last ten years. Your donation to our annual appeal makes the Foundation’s mission possible and brings the Museum to life. In 2017, donations to the Foundation renovated and upgraded the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium, keeping the Museum on the cutting edge of technology and maintaining the facilities. Magical & Real, the Henriette Wyeth and Peter Hurd exhibition, was brought to Roswell in 2018 by donations to the Foundation. It is our honor to use your donation to offer scholarships for art classes to a diverse audience of children and adults, and to sponsor pARTy After Hours, Family After Hours, and the Roswell Science and Art Festival. The future is bright at the Museum with many exciting projects on the horizon. It takes time, planning, and your donation to keep our Museum moving forward and growing with the everchanging needs of our community. Please donate to the RMAC Foundation’s annual appeal. — Cindy Torrez Executive Director RMAC Foundation

STAFF NEWS & OUTREACH Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson will be presenting at the New Mexico Art Educators Association 2019 Conference in Taos. Amanda’s presentation on “STEAM in the Classrooms and Community” will focus on a variety of STEAM-based activities and how they have been utilized through events and programming at RMAC and in the Roswell community. Elaborating on how the arts both integrate with and enhance STEM education, the conference session will also include a handson portion incorporating circuits and light into a work of art.
Registrar Amberly Meli and Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Aubrey Hobart attended the New Mexico Association of Museums and Mountain Plains Museum Association joint conference in September in Albuquerque. The theme, Community and Empathy: Reaching out to Serve, brought together perspectives from various cultures to explore how to create museum spaces that present multiple viewpoints. On September 19, Aubrey Hobart presented the history of Tlaxcala, Mexico, to three classes at East Grand Plains Elementary. The 5th grade was learning about the region as part of a school project on the different states of Mexico. Virginia “Jenny” Hurless will be returning to the Museum as Museum Store Clerk, replacing Lea Rohr Fraser who is moving to Colorado. We will miss Lea and wish her the best in her future travels and adventures. Board of Trustees Chair Cymantha Liakos and Executive Director Caroline Brooks both received nominations for a Dare to Be an Innovator award through the Women’s Project of the United Way in the 2nd annual “Dare to be Her” awards ceremony which was held in June.
