FROM THE DIRECTOR Another year has begun and we are excited to bring with it some new offerings that are sure to be fun and that may even change your perspective and open your mind to new possibilities. If you are looking to rejuvenate, try Gentle Yoga. We are offering sessions, free to Museum Members, twice per month in our galleries. Led by certified yoga instructor Alice Buck, let Alice help you release your stress and reset for the coming week surrounded by art from the Museum’s permanent collection. If you want another way to relax and maybe make some new friends, you might try an evening of artmaking at a Make & Mingle. This year, we are taking our Make & Mingles on the road! That is, over on 3rd Street to Red Door Brewery. The first session of the year will be on Thursday, March 26 from 6 to 8 pm on the topic of doodling with 3D pens led by Irina Glassini from ENMUR’s iCenter. All of the supplies will be provided and our friends at Red Door will be giving a drink voucher to each of the registrants! We anticipate a lot of interest, so register early online to reserve your space. For questions, please call 575-500-0363. Also in March we will be honoring Women’s History Month with two documentary films, American Revolutionary on the Detroit civil rights activist Grace Lee Boggs on March 6 and Wonder Women! about the origin, impact and legacy of the comic book hero on March 13, both at 7 pm. The films will be accompanied by beverages and fresh popcorn, all courtesy of the RMAC Foundation. For the little ones in your life, we are starting a new program on select Saturdays called Pop-Up Playdate. Designed as a way to explore themes in our galleries, Playdates will offer a free drop-in style art activity connected to an exhibition. The first one will take place on March 14 from 10 am to noon and will explore Animals in Art in relation to the Line in the Sand exhibition.

3 Winter 2020

We are also offering Kid’s Clay classes, Spring Break Camps and our pre-K Space Look and Storybook again this year. For details please visit our Classes page and don’t forget we have scholarships available for those with financial need! Many of you are artists (or have taken classes with us in the past and aren’t ready to commit to the label!). We have two upcoming workshops that are designed primarily for artists, but are open to “non-artists,’ who want to explore their artmaking from a different perspective. Current Roswell Artist-in-Residence Jordan Craig is offering a one-day monoprinting workshop on Saturday, January 25 for artists who want to expand their toolbox and explore expressing their concepts through a spontaneous, experimental technique, as well as others who would like to learn about the artform. Jordan is a Northern Cheyenne painter and printmaker based in the Bay Area who creates intricate patterns inspired by Indigenous textiles, beadwork, pottery and landscapes. Sharbani Das Gupta is a ceramic and mixed media artist, many of you may know, who lived in Roswell for several years before relocating to Las Cruces. She currently has an exhibition on display at the Museum and will be offering a workshop for clay artists on finding your artistic voice on Saturday, February 8. She will also be presenting a free Brown Bag Lunch Talk on Friday, February 7 at noon. Accompanied by a number of great new exhibitions, there is so much to see and do at the Museum. Thank you to our members and donors. You help make what we do for our community a reality and we appreciate you. If you are looking for an opportunity to support the Museum further and have a romantic post-Valentine’s Day outing we encourage you to get tickets for the RMAC Foundation’s annual fundraiser, Wild West Murder Mystery Dinner, taking place on Saturday, February 22. For details see our events page or call the Foundation at 575-627-0918. See you in the new year!

EXHIBITIONS

Remembering Bruce Lowney Former Roswell Artist-inResidence, Bruce Lowney (1970-71, 1974-75) passed away on October 5, 2019. In remembrance, the Roswell Museum will be showcasing fourteen of his lithographs and paintings from our collection.

SV Randall as pair legged EXHIBITION SV Randall: Roswell Artist-inResidence January 25 March 8, 2020 Lecture and Opening Reception: Friday, January 24, 5:30-7pm Marshall and Winston Gallery

SV Randall, detail from as pair legged, 2019, mixed media, dimensions variable. Courtesy of the Artist.

Roswell Artist-In-Residence SV Randall has always been drawn to how architecture and common commodities influence the ways in which we traverse the world. Deeply inspired by opposing notions of interiority and exteriority, his sculptures often address topics of boundaries and barriers. Through the poetry of everyday experience and the use of symbolically charged materials, many of his artworks mimic the veneer of different strands in American society’s material culture. For his exhibition at RMAC, he will present a new series of sculptures inspired by a sense of placelessness. Meticulously crafted suitcases ranging in size and style are rendered in subtle gradients of subdued colors atop a myriad of splintered architectural platforms – evoking a state of fractured displacement and nomadism.

4 Roswell Museum and Art Center

SV Randall is an interdisciplinary artist from Buffalo, NY. He received his MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from VCU and his BFA from Alfred University. His work has been exhibited at David & Schweitzer Contemporary, Brooklyn, NY; the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, TX; Ditch Projects, Eugene, OR; and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez in Mexico. SV is the recipient of the Toby Devin Lewis Fellowship Award and has most recently participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (Skowhegan, ME), Sculpture Space (Utica, NY), the Fine Arts Work Center (Provincetown, MA), and the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT). To learn more about the artist, visit www.svrandall.com

Lowney is known primarily for his printmaking, starting his career by working for Garo Antreasian and then went on to the famed Tamarind Institute in the 1960s. His work is beautifully colored, often balanced, symmetrical, and harmonious, but beneath the surface is a dark humor. Surreal and metaphorical, Lowney is both subtle and obvious with his messages about the collective unconscious, the sublime infinite, and the human condition.

Tonee Harbert Roswell Artist-in-Residence

Tonee Harbert’s photography considers human interaction with the landscape. Any purpose people impose on the land leaves a mark which may be overt, or can faintly show a past narrative. These signs/ signals inhabit our everyday world, where collectively they can take on the qualities of a dream or myth. This developing work from New Mexico invokes history and impermanence through looking at what remains from scenarios that once held meaning or utility and now seem unresolved, or like something of import has happened there in the past. Harbert uses a 1960’s plastic “Diana” film camera, featuring a lo-fi plastic lens to capture scenes which resonate with his own interpretation of, and experience of moving through the world.

Decades The 1950s

The 1950s are often remembered as conservative and calm years of economic prosperity with a focus on traditional nuclear families

EXHIBITION Decades: The 1950s February 22 August 9, 2020 Horgan and Graphics Galleries Lez L. Haas, The Brook, 1955, watercolor on paper, 14 ¾ in. x 21 ½ in., Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Winston. 1956.138.0001 5 Winter 2020

Tonee Harbert, grew up in Oregon, and has lived most of his life in Maine. He has worked as a commercial, fine art and documentary photographer. His photography has been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Portland Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum, Danforth Museum of Art, ICA at Maine College of Art, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. He’s been awarded a New England Emmy award and his work has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and in books and motion pictures. He and his partner, artist Shoshannah White are thrilled to be part of the Roswell Artist-inResidence community. To learn more about the artist, visit www.toneeharbert.com.

and “futuristic” technology. However, it was also a fearful decade overshadowed by the Korean War, the Cold War, and worries about the spread of communism. Many of these fears found expression in the visual arts through increasing abstraction. Rock and roll took over the musical

world, and the newly-defined demographic group known as teenagers invented dozens of energetic dances. Television was introduced to the general public and many people watched the same sci-fi, western, and comedy programs. Although American culture appeared uniformly middle-class and suburban, cracks began to show in the emerging civil rights movement and the end of school segregation. Showcasing period music and a new slate of artworks, join us as we hop forward to the fifties.

EXHIBITIONS

COLLECTIONS

New Acquisitions Sculptor Ho Baron is no stranger to the bizarre and uncanny. His sculptures are unsettling, made up of humanoid beings with too many eyes and mouths. They twist in unnatural ways, grinning from every joint and orifice. But there is also a strange beauty in his unique and consistent vision, which our visitors can now see for themselves as Baron has gifted four of his sculptures.

Inspired by Calligraphy Ulfert Wilke and Peter Bilan Calligraphy is the art of decorative handwriting, and there are some stunningly beautiful examples of it throughout the world. Rather than focus on calligraphy itself, however, this exhibit will showcase pieces from RMAC’s permanent collection that were inspired by forms of calligraphy.

Throughout his life, Ulfert Wilke was fascinated by the languages of the Middle East and Asia. Eventually, he began using similar gestural marks in his prints that resemble real letters and words from these areas. They EXHIBITION can’t actually be read, however. This may Calligraphy be because Wilke was March 28 - July associated with the 26, 2020 Abstract Expressionists, who believed that abstract Spring River marks had enough emotional power that any literal Gallery meaning was unnecessary.

Ulfert Wilke, Untitled III, 1977, lithograph on paper, 18 ½ in. x 13 ¼ in., Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Martin. 1979.077.0027

Artist Peter Bilan took his appreciation of calligraphy in a different direction, sculpting wooden curves that replicate the sinuous, continuous lines of writing in three dimensions. His piece, “Hanging Calligraphy” brings to mind a signature, the only cursive handwriting that most of us do anymore, yet in a much larger and more deliberate scale. Through their work, Wilke and Bilan remind us of the abstract joy and beauty in written language.

6 Roswell Museum and Art Center

Some people have called his sculptures demonic, but Baron doesn’t believe in the existence of a being that embodies pure evil. Instead, he believes in the more mundane human evils like greed, theft, dishonesty, and ignorance. This is evident in one of his donations called Committee, which depicts eight faces merged together in one bronze relief panel. The committee, Baron says, is the new royal power, a body without a heart that makes decisions for others. Another gift, Post-Nuclear Dog, depicts a thin dog running frantically. His human-like teeth, at least one set of them, are clenched in a grin, while at the other end, his tongue is stuck out in playful exhaustion. The dog’s sides are covered with human faces, illustrating a melding of dog and human after a nuclear catastrophe. It’s both disturbing and fun. The third piece is a bust that was made from the same mold as a larger sculpture. The larger work is called Doppelganger and it shows a figure striding forward while another being emerges smoke-like from its back. The first figure is meant to represent our ego, our conscious traits and attitudes, while the other is our unconscious self, our shadow, which can be a positive or negative force in our lives. The Museum’s new bust is a copy of the head of the conscious figure. We’re deeply grateful to Ho Baron for this generous donation. The Distortionists is on permanent display in our outdoor sculpture garden and can be seen during the Museum’s open hours.

BECOME A DOCENT

Do you like learning about art and history? Do you enjoy giving back to your community? Do you have two or more hours to volunteer during the day each week? The Roswell Museum and Art Center is seeking individuals to serve as volunteer docents. Docents are volunteer educators who provide learning experiences to school children and general visitors. Program participants will go through a training course to help provide the support and resources to confidently conduct guided tours of the exhibitions and assist with hands-on activities. For more information or to apply, please contact Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson at a.nicholson@roswell-nm.gov or 575-500-0352.

MUSEUM STORE Wisconsin artist Joyce Fritz uniquely designs elaborate bug brooches from polymer clay using an ancient glassworking technique called “millefiori. Sheets and coils of clay are stacked together and compressed into a small loaf which are then sliced to create a variety of intricate design elements. Combined with metallic leaf, glitter, recycled wire and glass beads, these bugs will make a dashing accessory (and a cute friend) for your outfits.
