DIRECTOR’S VIEW When founded in 1937 as a WPA Federal Art Center, the Museum endeavored for “participation by the entire community in all forms of art experience.” Among the Museum’s many strengths has been the continued commitment by decades of staff, board members and volunteers to make art, and later history and science, an integral part of the Roswell community. In this, the Museum’s 80th year, the Museum has been a hub of activity with new learning opportunities and ways to engage in learning for all ages, and there is still much more to come! With climbing temperatures this summer, you might be seeking an opportunity to get out of the heat of the afternoon. Consider joining us for a Sunday Conversations event. These informal gallery talks are presented on select Sundays each month and are led by Museum staff or guest artists to provide a deeper understanding of the objects, stories and people that make up our exhibitions. August’s talk, led by Planetarium Coordinator Jeremy Howe, will focus on Robert H. Goddard and the development of the Museum’s significant Goddard Collection of Liquid Propellant Rocketry as part of the Collecting Roswell exhibition. In September, local artist Dorothy Peterson will highlight some of the paintings in her popular exhibition which opened in June. Looking for something different to do on a Friday night? pARTy After Hours is a new pilot event geared to adults that combines gallery experiences with lively and thought-provoking activities in a social environment. Developed in collaboration with YPAC (Youth & Professionals for the Arts Collective), the September 8 event aims to expand the Museum’s reach by creating a relaxed atmosphere in which to mix, mingle, learn and enjoy.
3 Summer 2017
STEM events (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) have been appearing around Roswell in recent months as teachers, students and their families engage with activities to inspire the minds of our next great innovators. STEM has also been a popular topic at the Museum as we make the final preparations for the long-awaited renovation of the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium to take place in August and September. Since 1969, the Planetarium has provided opportunities for thousands of students and adults to explore the cosmos. With new amenities including a digital full dome conversion, comfortable seating, updated lighting and sound, and spectacular digital shows, learning about space will be an extraordinarily stunning experience. Stay tuned for opening weekend festivities this fall and for more STEM and STEAM activities (STEM blended with art) in the future at the Museum. Looking ahead, be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, October 6, as we celebrate both the Museum’s birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program with birthday cake and the opening of RAiR at 50, an exhibition presenting current work of alumni of the distinguished residency program. Join us this year and be a part of our ongoing commitment to you, our patrons, to make art, history and science a part of your life and the lives of your families and friends. See you at the Museum!

Dorothy Peterson is one of Roswell’s most respected artists and educators, and has been teaching and painting here for over thirty years. As a teacher, Peterson has dedicated herself to the creative enrichment of Roswell and its surrounding communities, offering courses in art and art history at the New Mexico Military Institute, ENMU-Roswell, and the Roswell Museum and Art Center. In her artistic practice, Peterson celebrates New Mexico’s distinctive geography, history, and sense of place through her expressionist watercolor and acrylic paintings. Jennifer Furman is an artist and received her BFA from Texas Tech University. She has been an Art teacher for over ten years, teaching at Arts Connect since 2013. She believes teaching art is the greatest job in the world. In addition, Furman is actively involved in the local art community and is President of New Mexico Art Education Association. Jeremy Howe was born and raised in New Mexico. He comes from a family of artists and was always nurtured in his own sense of expression.
For the past 17 years, Howe’s medium of choice has been fireworks. In this high-energy genre, Jeremy has pioneered and fine-tuned various techniques in the art of capturing colored smoke and oxidation trails onto paper. He is a self-taught artist, holding a degree in geology from New Mexico Tech. Past museum exhibits include Ft. Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, International Museum of Art in El Paso, Las Cruces Museum of Fine Art, and Roswell Museum and Art Center. Jeremy currently educates the public about space science through the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium.

Andrea Jespersen Roswell Artist-in-Residence EXHIBITION Andrea Jespersen: Roswell Artistin-Residence July 29 September 10, 2017 Marshall and Winston Gallery Lecture and Opening Reception: Friday, July 28
An embroidery ring morphs into large geometric heavy steel shapes. A wet human-sized photographic print is draped into a sculptural sphere. The intricate work of artist Andrea Jespersen resists any quick singular categorization. She astutely works with a multitude of materials, techniques and mediums that act as support for her ideas.

Jespersen’s art entices the viewer to slow down and contemplate. Her body of work consciously plays with how the aesthetic handmade can bring mindful thinking to the conceptual table. Jespersen has exhibited at museums and galleries throughout Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America. Recent solo exhibitions have been at Medical Museion in Copenhagen, BALTIC’s project space in England, and the AngusHughes Gallery in London. She is a graduate of London’s Royal
College of Art and Scotland’s Glasgow School of Art. Her practice and research focus on art grounded in conceptual considerations that incorporate time-consuming handmade methods. Female conceptual art practices that rely on the “cerebral handmade” are further defined by the artist in her PhD Mind Circles: on conceptual deliberation−Hanne Darboven and the trace of the artist’s hand. EXHIBITIONS
Shanti Grumbine Roswell Artist-in-Residence
Work of the Quarter Another recent acquisition we’d like to highlight this quarter is a gift from a former Roswell Artist-inResidence, Central Valley by David Hines. Based in California, Hines highlights both the beauty and universality of everyday America. Focusing on street signs, intersections, and other transitional spaces, his meticulous paintings bring a sense of monumentality to these overlooked places. Inspired by the luminous, detailed compositions of Rembrandt, Gerrit Dou, and other Dutch painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Hines employs a highly naturalistic style, carefully adding layers of delicate glazes to give his paintings a rich, textured appearance. Often painted at night and devoid of people, Hines gives a sense of separateness and even loneliness that often accompanies modern American living, as automobiles, single-family homes, and other constructs have placed us in increasing isolation from one another.
EXHIBITION Shanti Grumbine is a Brooklyn based multimedia artist. For the past six years, she has been Shanti transforming appropriated print media through Grumbine: Roswell Artistpaper cutting, collage, sculpture and printmaking in-Residence with a focus on how value systems are created September 23 – and maintained. By removing, fracturing and November 25, scrambling text and image from journalistic sources 2017 and advertising, she makes space for what has been Marshall and censored or lost in the translation of experience Winston Gallery into words. Referencing the aesthetic of illuminated Lecture and manuscripts, commemorative paper cutting, Opening binary codes and corrupted files, she addresses how Reception: media simultaneously informs and obscures our Friday, September 22 understanding of current events. In Roswell, she has embarked on a new project. In all of her work, she 5:30 pm: Lecture 6-7 pm: Reception aims to transform everyday experiences and objects through craft, repetition, beauty and ritual. Shanti Grumbine, Surplus, 2017, de-acidified New York Times newspaper, jade glue, matte medium, UV archival spray, newspaper stick, 26” x 22”. Courtesy of the Artist.
Hines was an Artist-in-Residence in 2014; some readers may remember his exhibition Like Night and Day, which was on view from August to October. Painted in 2000, Central Valley predates Hines’s time on the Residency, and depicts a country road in California. Somewhat unusually for Hines, the painting is a daytime scene rather than a night one, and while Hines completed this work before the Residency, he offered it to the Roswell Museum and Art Center because its scenery is reminiscent of Roswell, particularly around the alfalfa farms at the outskirts of town. We at the Museum are excited to have this piece in our collection, and visitors can currently view it in our North Gallery hallway on the New Acquisitions wall. Be sure to check out this painting if you haven’t seen it already, and stay tuned for our next Work of the Quarter.
She has participated in many residencies including the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Yaddo, Ucross, the A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship Program, and the Lower East Side Printshop Keyholder Residency. Exhibition venues include Center for Contemporary Arts Sante Fe, Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, Dorsky Gallery in Long Island City, and the Bronx Museum. STAFF NEWS FOUNDATION NEWS The Roswell Museum and Art Center Foundation is pleased to recognize the individuals we have received Memorial Donations for this fiscal year: Patricia Lubben Bassett, Virginia & Curtis Belding, Jean Boswell, Richard Cibak, Dorothy Nell (Sumner) Corn, Bob Cress, Stephen Andrew Grooms, Linda Hays, Debra Hebert, Elaine Houston, Carolyn Ives, Billy Jeffers, Richard Knadle, Kay Liakos, William G. Liakos, I L Marshall, Dick Mulkey, Ellen Shanor, Robert H. Tatom, Gail Glover Terry, and Penrod Toles. The Foundation is honored by the donations received in memory of your friends and loved ones. Many of the individuals honored had a huge impact on the Foundation and the Museum during their lifetime. The memorial gifts support the Museum’s collection and programs that enrich our community. The Foundation is grateful for the partnerships formed and the support received from them. Planned giving is another way a number of donors have made a positive impact on the Foundation and the Museum. A planned gift is any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. There are three types
of planned gifts; gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s death. The Foundation has been blessed to be remembered in a number of our donors’ estates. Thomas M. Messer is one of those donors. Mr. Messer was the RMAC Director from 1949-1952. In 1961 Mr. Messer became director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue in New York City. His leadership for over a quarter-century established The Guggenheim among the world’s great museums of modern art. During his tenure – one of the longest of a director of any major American art museum – The Guggenheim deepened its collection, expanded its exhibitions program, vastly improved its publications and took its first step toward becoming a global institution. It is indeed a blessing for the Museum to touch people’s lives and to receive the honor of their bequests. We are forever grateful to all that help make the Roswell Museum and Art Center the ‘jewel” of southeastern New Mexico.
MUSEUM STORE Fractiles have made their way to the Museum Store! This creative educational toy for all ages consists of a magnectic board with dozens of colorful magnet tiles that can be arranged in any number of ways to create intricate fractal imagery. Fractals are helpful for modeling partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth, fluid turbulence and galaxy formation. Fractiles are produced by geometry fans Marc Pelletier and Beverly Johnson of Boulder, Colorado. Their mission in developing Fractiles is to help bring the beauty of geometry into the mainstream. Stop by and pick one up for yourself or for the artist or budding scientist in your family.
