MESSAGE FROM RI PRESIDENT IAN H.S. RISELEY
RI PRESIDENT 2017-18 ROTARY CLUB OF SANDRINGHAM VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA Dear fellow Rotarians: I am pleased to welcome you to this Rotary club induction for 2017-2018. There are more than 35,000 Rotary clubs throughout the world. While geography, culture or even language may separate us, it is our shared commitment to service that unites us. It is this passion for strengthening communities, locally and globally, and to put Service Above Self, that makes us Rotarians. We are not afraid to tackle some of the world’s most critical and widespread humanitarian issues. We vaccinate children against polio, teach young adults to read, and bring water to villages that have none. We know firsthand the impact helping our neighbors down the street or across the border can have for current and future generations. I hope this event inspires you to create positive, lasting change in ways that will affect communities for years to come. With your support, we will continue to serve others through Rotary: Making a Difference. Sincerely,
IAN H.S. RISELEY 2017-2018 President Rotary International 4

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR
F
irst of all, I would like to congratulate The Great President Jesus “Jess” Tumaneng of the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao and his Club Leadership Team for committing to lead your Club this Rotary Year. Serving a Club for one whole year demands a lot of your time and resources, thus we recognize the great sacrifice on your part. This is the best way to show your commitment to deliver Service Above Self as you take your Club to the next level. Rotary aims to bring together a global network of volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talent to tackle some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. This may seem daunting to many of you, so the challenge I pose to you as we serve this Rotary Year 2017-2018 is to take the first small step – to start with your adopted communities first. The bigger picture is that 100 small communities put together could be a mega city, all benefitting from the zeal for service that burns in the heart of every Rotarian. Rotary: Making a Difference is the theme that our RI President Ian Riseley has chosen to be the theme for our year of service. He said that “whether we are building a new playground or a new school, improving medical care or sanitation, training conflict mediators or midwives, we know that the work we do will change people’s lives — in ways large and small — for the better.” Making a difference in the community we all serve must therefore have three important elements as well: it will change people’s lives, the change does not have to be in large ways and the change must for the better. I invite you therefore to join me and our District Leadership Team so together, we will strive to make a difference in our respective communities. Let Rotary: Making a Difference be our beacon as we strive to deliver Service Above Self. Again, congratulations to everyone. Maraming salamat at mabuhay tayong lahat.
NESTOR “CHITO” BORROMEO RI District 3780 Governor RY 2017-18 6
ROTARY CLUB OF COSMOPOLITAN CUBAO
DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S PROFILE
N
estor “Chito” Borromeo was born on February 8, 1954 to parents Francisco and Angelina in the town of Molo, Iloilo.
He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), finishing a Bachelor of Science degree major in Accounting at the San Sebastian College. He took his MBA at the Ateneo de Manila University Graduate School of Business. Chito the student activist was a Student Council leader and Chairman of the National Secretariat of the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP). Chito is a member of the Rotary Club of New Manila East, and was Club President in RY 20062007. He received the highest individual award given by the District at the end of his term as President. He was conferred the Most Outstanding Club President award. His multiple awards include: Most Outstanding Assistant Governor in RY 2008-2009, The Outstanding Rotarians of the Year (TORY) in RY 2012-2013, and the RI President Sakuji Tanaka Vocational Excellence Award. He was Team leader of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) to Arkansas. Chito’s immersion and commitment to the advocacy for social reform began at an early age when, as a student leader, he took up the fight against poverty and its brutalizing effects. He also realized, very early on, that human dignity was the ultimate casualty of privation, and that the battle to save man’s soul starts with giving him nourishment, looking after his health ang giving him the means to life. True to his lifelong advocacy one of the highlights of his Club Presidency was saving 2,000 poor children from malnourishment through fresh carabao milk feeding. Chito played a major role in securing medical care for 750

day care pupils afflicted with tuberculosis. At the outbreak of typhoon Hayan (Yolanda) in November 2013, he spearheaded a disaster relief team of Rotarians who stayed in Ormoc, Leyte, to put up a soup kitchen providing meals to 1,500 displaced children for more than 120 days. Greatly encouraged by the outpouring support of local and foreign partners, as well as the heartwarming emotional gratitude of the children and families who were victimized by the calamity, the Soup Kitchen was replicated in Tacloban, Leyte serving 1,000 displaced children. The Rotary Soup Kitchen was just the start of what became an overwhelming show of how Rotarians serve beyond self. Amid their own fears and time away from their families, Chito and the Rotarians with him brought hope to helpless, devastated communities. The Rotary Soup Kitchen became District 3780’s fulcrum that paved the way to many other services that restored the spirit of the many whose lives were severely crippled by the devastation of Yolanda. School rooms were built, livelihood programs were introduced, fishing boats were donated. Chito could not stay still after Ormoc and Tacloban. There was an urge to do more and make bigger strides in helping more, in inspiring others to do more. That was the first step to the Governor’s seat. The position sought the man and though he was initially reluctant, finally accepted the challenge to be District Governor in 2014-2015. His election was unanimous and the contending aspirations for service were unified and resolved. Chito brings with him a distinguished career in government, first as Assistant Secretary and then as Acting Undersecretary of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC). He was Deputy Administrator of MWSS and Secretary to the Mayor of Quezon City Government. He was Director of Home Guarantee

Corporation and GSIS Family Savings Bank and a Central Bank Examiner. His expertise spans industries in Finance and Accounting, in Social and Micro Enterprises, in Business Development, and Housing finance, development, and construction. The help that Chito and the Rotarians extended to the victims of Yolanda which expanded beyond the soup kitchen likewise expanded beyond Leyte. Chito was a member of the government team in the preparation of plans, policy determination of beneficiaries and mobilizing resources of the government on the construction of about 200,000 houses for displaced families in other devastated areas of the Visayas region. His current vocational classification in Rotary is Management Consultant, but had past classifications as Horse Trader, Restaurateur, and City Administration. Chito’s life, colored by his multiple talents, has taken him to a lot of exciting and challenging roads in both private and government service, many of them with huge success. Needless to say, he continues to do work where his service is sought. He is happily married to Maria Nona Vierich Baula, who is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and former Flight Attendant. Nona is a graduate of St. Scholastica’s College, where Chito taught Accounting and Finance subjects for 12 years. They are blessed with 6 admirable and talented children: Maria (Noelle), 27, a Licensed Landscape Architect and a graduate of the University of the Philippines(UP); Bernard Luis (Beloy), 25, BSC Management graduate at Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU); Maria Jessi (Yshay), 22, recently graduated from UP with a course in Family Life and Child Development ; Maria Monica (Nicki) , 20, 3rd year college at the ADMU; Isidro Luis (Chino), 19, Materials Engineering student at UP; and Manuel Luis (Luis), 13 , Grade 8 student at ADMU. God is always at the center of the lives of the Borromeo family. They are active Church Parishioners in Santa Maria Della Strada Church, and Chito Serves as a Minister of the Holy Eucharist while Nona and Chino serve as Lectors.

ROTARY CLUB OF COSMOPOLITAN CUBAO
MESSAGE FROM IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT
T
he previous Rotary Year has truly been an eye-opener for me. With the usual challenges as the club President, I still felt that I could have done more, something better and bigger. But as what Mother Teresa said, it’s ok to do small things, but do them with great love. I’ve learned to love the imperfections of the club, embrace them and turn it into meaningful self-learnings as I continue on with the learning process even if I’m already at the position. Doing good for others was never really difficult as long as we know that the small things we are able to contribute to them makes necessary changes and impact to their lives. I’d like to thank the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao for the trust and dedication to stay with me throughout the Rotary year, to the District Team and my fellow All-Star Presidents. You’ve made this journey really amazing. Thank you so much! As we celebrate the new Rotary year, we embark yet again to another year of selfless service and dedication to help our underprivileged communities. We’ll be working hand in hand again with our partners in service including other Rotary Clubs inside and outside of the district. This year, under the Rotary theme, “Rotary: Making a Difference”, let us make another lasting and positive impact in the lives of the people we are helping. Rotarians are PEOPLE OF ACTION and I’m sure that within this year and the succeeding years to come, our club shall reach higher level of accomplishments, from quality membership growth and retention to sustainable and higher impact projects. Let us not lose our momentum right now. Again, thank you for the trust and let us continue doing our part in serving the needy and underprivileged. To TGP Jess Tumaneng, I couldn’t thank him enough for accepting the position. I am glad to pass on the torch to him. All of these, with him as the club president again, is happening at the perfect moment and I pledge to give him my support for our beloved Rotary Club. All the best in making a difference this year!

MESSAGE FROM THE GREAT PRESIDENT
O
n this exact date, August 20, 1985, our club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao made a humble beginning to add life to the District and the Rotary International. The club started well and moved to its path of service trying to reach goals after goals every year of its life. Just like any other club, challenges and struggles are met along the way and challenges and struggles are met along the way and if it is not strong enough perhaps it has faded away. Today, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao has reached 32 years of existence, 32 years of living the motto “Service Above Self” and fellovwship amongst ourselves. In jubilance, let us celebrate this momentous event, with the hopes and prayers many good opportunities will come along as we continue to serve the humanity. Believe in what our Rotary founder Paul Harris said, “Serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing a person can do. In every service of kindness, surely will make a difference in the lives of people we help. To our admirable Governor Chito Borromeo and his District team, thanks for a worthwhile visit. The scrutiny of our plans and programs is a process of learning for the best implementation of our projects. Your proper guidance in the preparation for our term has greatly influenced us the Great Presidents in the performance of our leadership in our respective clubs. Surely your admonition to us, “Preparation. Preparation. Preparation.”, will be translated to effective “Action. Action. Action.” You can also expect that our mission will be in congruence and in support of the mission and vision of the District. As I assume the presidency of our club for the second time, let me offer words of commendation to our outgoing president ASP Nikko Carlo Cayaga for the marvelous job done for the club. If you consider that bringing me back to the club is one of your significant accomplishment, then I am back with the assurance that you will work with me hand in hand in Making A Difference in the club. Tonight, I stand before you to humbly accept the great responsibility mindful of the trust and confidence reposed on me. The club continues its meetings every Thursdays at Inocentes Farm House from 7:30 PM onwards. Then on September 21, 1985, the historic presentation was done with no less than the District Governor Fernando “Nanding” Pedrosa as guest of honor and speaker.

Younger members with fresh and new ideas were recruited into the Club. Fresh breed of leaders started to shine, just the right folks to keep it fresher and more renewed. Here, Past President Rolando “Rolly” Garcia ruled the Club. He initiated the donation of a pacemaker to a young patient who, without one, will not be able to fully live the life of a normal person. He also showed special fondness for the children of the Club’s expanded community that now includes Barangay Tagumpay with his weekly feeding program. Absence of free circumcision for several years in this barangay attracted an unprecedented number of young boys to bravely face the passage to manhood. PDG Gil Divinagracia is surely proud of this “Caring President”. PP Rolly really knew how to “Show Rotary Cares”.
Willy “Willy” Mirafuentes (13th President) Follow Your Rotary Dream
The end of the century saw the club with PP Willy Mirafuentes at the helm. The changes that the Club introduced were in a full swing. The thrust of his term was prudence. This dreaming president expanded the club membership, embarking into vocational and community activities and by being active in district affairs. Together with then IPP Rolly, they attended the R.I. Convention in Singapore. He dreamt of a strong Club and he did get a strong Club. With sports and fellowship being the foundation of strong camaraderie among club members and their families, “Follow Your Rotary Dream”, he did together with PDG Nemesio “Nemie” Peralta.
Romeo “Romy” Tan (14th President) Act with Consistency, Credibility and Continuity
The turn of the century beckoned new hope and a new beginning, yet the threat of a manmade virtual monster, the millennium bug looked ominous. Unlike the uncertainty of fate when the clock struck at midnight of December 31, 1999, the Club was certain of its destiny which was that of a strong and healthy club at the dawn of the new millennium. With Past President Romeo “Romy” Tan at the wheel and his energetic style provided the much-needed impetus for the Club to steam ahead. This boyhood friend of PP Willy succeeded in raising the bar over the accomplishment of his predecessors. The club won a significant citation for its livelihood project for the residents of Barangay San Vicente. His and his governor’s theme “Act with Consistency, Credibility and Continuity”. PP Romy Tan indeed made his Club and PDG Mojamito “Mo” Libunao feel proud.

PP Romualdo “Bembot” Aldecoa can best be described as a professional manager with the flair of diplomacy. Under him, the Club became familiar among the other Club became familiar among the other clubs in the District. With numerous co-hosting of intercity meetings and interclub activities, the members of the Club were exposed to the rest of the Rotary World.
With the theme “Mankind is Our Business”, Past President Alfonso “Noy” Vargas, working closely with the club members, several significant changes were adopted. The new home of the Club was transferred from Little Quiapo to the Rotary Center along Roces avenue.
This Rotary Year marked the vibrant emergence of the Club. This was through purposeful club-focused activities coupled with dynamic participation and involvement in many district affairs. While undertaking with renewed vigor the core projects that continue to be relevant and meaningful to its many stakeholders, the Club adopted and implemented the “Housing for the Poor” as its centennial project. Inspired by the theme “Sow the Seeds of Love” with Loving President Orlando “Orly” Asiddao at the helm, the Club embarked at reinforcing RCCC’s commitment to Rotary’s ideals of service. Significantly, the year bannered an unprecedented number of seven (7) RCCC Rotarians inducted as Paul Harris Fellows or Paul Harris Fellows+1, a testimony of its adherence to the noble objectives of the Rotary Foundation, a distinction which earned a citation from PDG Roberto “Bobby” Viray.
Together with PP Rolly, he attended the international event held in Manila with no less than R.I. President Frank Devlin in attendance. With PDG Hermie Jarin, they served under the theme “Create Awareness, Take Action”. That earned him the title “Action President”.
32 nd
For the first time after several attempts in the past, lady Rotarians were inducted to the Club, giving the Club the needed boost in terms of wholesomeness in the club meetings. Fellowship and interclub co-sponsoring of projects were given prominence as encouraged by PDG Danilo “Danny” Reyes. This move enhanced camaraderie and harmony among the members within and outside the Club.

Godofredo “Fred” Sanchez (18th President) Lend a Hand The dymanic Star President Godofredo “Fred” Sanchez shifted to high gear in steering the Club. The official club bulletin, “The Cosmopolitan Review” for the first time was published for one complete Rotary year, and even attained marked improvements in for and scope. The participation and involvement of the Rotary spouses in the continuing projects such as the Suklay-Gunting, Candle-making, Operation Tuli and the book donation bonded the families stronger. Also, the conduct of Ann’s nights and fellowships helped made RCCC one big Rotary family. The Rotary theme “Lend a Hand” indeed inspired PDG Roberto “Bobby” Viray and PP Fred to deliver the Rotary’s ideals of service above self.

William “William” Dy (20th President) Service Above Self
Centennial President Gilda “Gilds” Advincula’s term marked the start of the threeyear Rotary signature project plan. As the first female president of the Club, programs for the elders of the Tahanan ni Maria in Cavite and the Aetas of Kanawan, Morong, Bataan were initiated. The successes of the projects merited citations both from the district and Rotary International President Glenn Estess. It was also during this Rotary year when the Club pursued the unique Centennial Commemorative Medal Project for which the Club received and outstanding Centennial Award.
In addition to the three-year programs placed on his lap, Past President William “William” Dy creatively embarked on a vital activity to ensure the Club’s financial viability which was fund-raising. Drawing from his sales and marketing expertise, PP William attracted several foreign donors and other local benefactors to support the Club in its many endeavours. Honorary members grew in number who proved as effective partners in service. With their inspiring dictum that the “best is yet to come”, PP William “William” Dy and PDG Benjamin “Benjie” Bacorro rallied on continuity and cooperation to achieve their Rotary theme “Service Above Self”.
During this historic centennial year, PP Gilds and PDG George L. Howards led the Club in the celebration of Rotary’s one hundred years of service.
20
Gary Ting (21st President) Lead the Way Fuelled with the experience of precious outreach projects, Past President Gary Ting focused on the Aeta Minorities of Kanawan, Bataan and Tahanan ni Maria in Cavite. A memorable year filled with travels, perspiration, tears of joy and also sadness. This year saw the demise of Past President Fermin Castaneda, the controversial funds that resulted into resignation of major officers to include its pillars. This leader changed the landscape of RCCC. Even PDG Danny Espinosa was charmed to his aching joints as he followed PP Gary, guided by the Rotary year’s theme “Lead the Way”.
Antonio “Tony” Chua (22nd President) Rotary Shares Picking up the pieces of what was left behind, this Sharing president piloted the Club into its new adventures. Balancing his time with the Club’s objectives, the District’s requirements and RC Downtown Manila, his dynamism kept the Club on its toes. Funds were again brought back to its pink health as he aims to bring the Club back to its new heights. PP Tony and his governor PDG Danny Fausto lived up with the year’s motto of “Rotary Shares”.

However, an untimely turn of events in the life of the Club led to the resignation of the President, Purification Lozada. Then vice president, PP Romy Tan pursued with vigor what was started. He worked hand-in-hand with PDG Alex Cureg in their desire to “Make Dreams Real”. Pres. Romy turned over a determined Club to the next president.
Rodolfo “Toots” Tutaan (24th President) The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands
Chiselled and trained to withstand difficult situations, this leader applied his expertise in guiding the Club back to its right track. Cosmopolites were again busy with outreach project in Bataan, participated in district projects and sports activities, and a fund raising golf activity. The proud hands-on President Toots together with District Governor Dulce Coyukiat handed-over a vibrant Club to his successor. Viva Toots!
Sixto “Kit” Lagare (25th President) Antonio “Tony” Chua Building Communities, Bridging Continents
A short-lived controversial reign of President Kit spelled a takeover by then vice president PP Antonio “Tony” Chua. PP Tony piloted the Club back to its safe flight path as he focused on Club strength and good governance. PP Tony and PDG Ambrosio “Ambo” Gancayco accurately stirred the shaken Club to a smooth landing.

PP Wilbert Yu has shown in his leadership the importance of family in strengthening any organization like the Rotary Club. In almost all of the important projects of the club during 2012-2013, the families of the Rotarians actively joined and participated in reaching out to partner communities and school. In line with this year’s theme, “Peace Through Service”, the RCCC was able to spread peace in the hearts of its members and their families. He spearheaded the launching of the first “Malunggay Planting” project in UP Campus in Diliman.

2013 2014
It was indeed a successful year for RCCC in engaging itself with its partner communities and international partners. With all these, PP Jim and the club hope to lhave lived to this year’s theme of engaging the Rotary to change lives.
His term was marked with environmentally meaningful projects that aimed to help the coastal communities of Orion, Bataan. With the support of sister club Rotary Club of Osaka-West and Bataan Coastal Care Foundation, the club did its share on rehabilitating the mangrove areas of Brgy.

Other meaningful projects were started or continued such as the Annual Gift Giving to patients in the National Children’s Hospital, The End TB Campaign and District Wide Medical Missions and a new enterprise gifted to the townsfolks of Barangay Camachile – Crab Culture and Fattening, a livelihood project. Doing these projects together, the Club and its members truly did a remarkable job to “Light Up Rotary”
Jimmuel “Jim” Naval (28th President) Engage Rotary, Change Lives
Past President Jimmuel Naval led the RCCC RI 3780 to a truly engaging Rotary year as the club entered into an international partnership with Rotary Club of Osaka-West Japan on July 26, 2013. He had the chance to establish external linkages with partners in Japan as he made his visit in Osaka, Japan in November of the same year. Likewise, the sister club visited the RCCC in March 2014 and joined in the Mangrove Planting of the club in Bataan.

2016 2017
All-Star President Nikko Carlo Cayaga became the youngest president of the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao. Though hesitant to lead the club because of age and inexperience, the club has convinced him to take the post with promise of guidance and support. He was just 27 then. Little did he know that his youth and charm will catapult him to prominence among his peers and the district. His knack of online tool adoption which he willingly shared won much admiration among his fellow All-Star Presidents. Being admirable, he carried the name of the club with him. Hosting of the Grants Management Seminar, Project Tawangan, WASH projects in Unit V Riverside Day Care Center, donation of Artesian Well and Hand Pump on Barangay Camachile, Orion, Bataan, Tree Planting in Ipo Dam with the UP Mountaineers and UP Students, and other projects which he participated with other clubs led the club to achieve the R.I. Presidential Citation with Distinction and District Governor’s Citation. The club and his leadership landed us to the outstanding 30 club leaders out of 102 clubs; which is an amazing performance for RY 2016-17. With District Governor Dwight Hilarion Ramos, All-Star President Nikko Carlo Cayaga did fulfill the theme “Rotary Serving Humanity”.

by PP Alfonso “Nonoy Vargas
he Club has just turned over the latest of the projects we committed to do for the community. A community water project. One well was dug supplied with a shallow water pump. This will serve the people at the outer edge of the community. Over four years of engagement with the people of Barangay Camachile, one hundred twenty miles off Quezon City, we were able to augment the thinning stock of mangrove trees along their shores. Seven thousand trees we planted together with our partner, Osaka West Rotary Club. Livelihood projects were also initiated, the brackish muck in the mangrove stand were turned to Crab fattening ponds with the crablets and initial feed stock from given by the Club to those who wished to avail of the project. With the success of the mangrove project, other organization came to know of it and initiated their own mangrove planting project in the community, The residents saw another opportunity for a livelihood project on their own. They built their own nursery for mangrove saplings. They earned by supplying the saplings needed by the ever growing number of mangrove planters, in their barangay as well as the neighboring barrios.

ROTARY CLUB OF COSMOPOLITAN CUBAO
Now, Rotary and the Club is welcomed by the community that every time we visit them, they feel that another project is being cooked up. Rightfully so. We visited them again after the turnover of the water project and the Chief and his council were hoping that we will then do the next project which is the community toilet. I’ve some sleepless nights devising plans for this project. Every body wants this project, soon. The people I talked to were enthusiastic talking about it. But they have different way of showing their desire foe a toilet. I have some plans shown to them but all were turned down, The first an enclosure made with thatched nipa shingles roof and sidings, they wont use it because of privacy concerns. (baka masilipan), ok so dignity is important, Why not change it to more sturdy and secured one with G.I. sheets for roofing and sidings? No takes too, reason being too hot inside (mainit, pagpapawisan) make sense, it can’t be called a “comfort room” if it is hot inside. Alright, the club is willing to give all it can to benefit the users, a toilet made out of concrete, sturdy doors with lockset, G,I. roof and with porcelain bowl and sink, the whole building painted inside and outside with the sign on the doors with “LALAKE” and BABAE” will it be O.K.? No way Jose said them, they’re afraid to dirty it and ruin the beautiful Community Toilet the club will provide for them. So what is it they do when they feel the urge to go, in a safe, comfortable and easy not to get dirty way? Answer… by the sea behind a mangrove tree, just Duck, Cover and GO! I woke up and realized it was only a dreamed encounter. Seriously, the people we talked to really crave for this Community Toilet Project, but ask to build it not in their backyard. They feel that with a toilet around their premises it will be dirty, smelly and unhealthy. There are times when community projects are hindered not by technical problems nor financial issues but by cultural traits, and the approach to solving this is by dialogue, more interacting with the community. We should have an open mind to the real needs of the people and we should by all means involve them in the evolution and eventual completion of the project. --- PP Noy Vargas | 25 July, 2017

The Tawangan Adventure T
by PP Romeo “Romy Tan
he Philippine Dental Association and the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao jointly conducted a dental and schoolchildren assistance outreach at the Tawangan, thru its Past President Jess Tumaneng, also a Past President of RC Cosmopolitan Cubao. Initiated by Benguet Dental Chapter of Philippine Dental Association, partnered by RC Baguio Summer Capital and Benguet Electric Cooperative.Tawangan, Kabayan, Benguet is the second to the last sitio of Kabayan. Taaw being the last and most remote (no electricity yet) When PP Jess Tumaneng invited the Club to join an outreach project in Tawangan Elementary School, Tawangan,Kabayan, Benguet, the name sounded remote and the place is synonymous to a cold weather. With the onset of the rainy season, the temperature drop is even lower. Nothing much to worry, we all thought.
32
The start of this project was a Thursday morning trip to Baguio City. Suppose to move as a convoy were 3 vans for the dentists from Manila and the vehicles of the RC Cosmopolitan Cubao Rotarians. The Thursday schedule was so prohibitive to most of the Rotarians. That would mean 2 to 3 days of absences from work or business. Juggling their schedules and finding time for the Thursday activity, PP Romy and spouse Amy, PP Noy and Pres. Nikko decided to go. With a sudden twist of fate, chicken pox hit the president 7 days before the project commenced. Three days before it started, PP Noy announced he is backing out due to work obligations conflicting with the scheduled Thursday departure. Only two warm Rotarian bodies and one spouse were able to push through. 16 boxes of assorted school supplies, 3 big sacks of rubber slippers of assorted sizes, all these were brought up all the way to Pine Cone ROTARY CLUB OF COSMOPOLITAN CUBAO
Lodge, Kabayan, Benguet. The group had a hearty lunch at Good Taste Restaurant and met some more dentist friends from the Benguet Dental Chapter of the PDA. Dr. Rose and Dr. Haydee were assigned to guide the convoy to Pine Cone Lodge and assisted the group in their stay. They even helped in the repacking of the school bags and items for giveaways in Tawangan. Repacking the school giveaways was one of the happy moments as nobody sat idle, everyone had their hands full. Repacking started at 6:00 pm and ended at 8:00 pm. A healthy dinner of very fresh water crest salad, picked from the nearby flowing creek, made the dinner a memorable one. Of course, for the meat lovers, Ms. Nora brought in her undying pork adobo as an added flavor for the tired and hungry “packers”. Everybody called it a night at about past 10 pm.
and sacks. The challenge now shifted to where to load it. There were only 5 vehicles full of passengers and their personal effects for a 2-day stay in the second farthest sitio of Kabayan, Benguet.
BENECO coincidence
Early birds had a wonderful Friday morning. The cold water had a lot of stories to tell after brave souls dared to take the morning bath. Worried about a flat tire that delayed the Benguet group of dentists, PP Jess and PP Romy were already pondering about the problem of bringing the cargoes to Tawangan. Options were discussed in between sips of unli-hot coffee while waiting anxiously for the Benguet group to lay down their plans. When the group decided to load it in the respective vehicles, somebody suspended the move; a better option is being brewed. A team of The initial suggestion was to give out rubber Beneco (Benguet Electric Cooperative) slippers to elementary students only. The technicians, equipped with a 4x4 truck high school students were finally included (size of an Isuzu elf open bed truck) and a since there are only about 175 of them. As personnel vehicle changed the mood of the the details of the project beneficiaries slowly morning. IPP Albert Atiwag of RC Baguio came into a full picture, the Club decided Summer Capital, who is also a dentist, had to give out a school starter kit. their team’s mission and help bring the loads to Tawangan instead. Prayers were heard, the whole Beneco team loaded the goods in their truck. They even transferred it to the waiting 4x4 jeep at Sitio Ballay so that volunteers can ride standing up on the open bed truck of Beneco, all the way to Tawangan. They had a 360’ view of the vegetable terraces and the clearest view of the deep ravines of the mountain passes. The smell of pine breeze and the cold chilly air was never left unnoticed.
The MISSION The group arrived in Tawangan Elementary School at around 9:30 am with a fiesta mood

atmosphere. A quick snack of kamote and squash cake and the signature unli-cup of coffee and tea in one of the class rooms started our busy day. Another room served as the sleeping quarter to some of the volunteers. No commands or orders were needed, every warm bodied volunteer started to do their intended mission that day. The dental group gathered in one school house; registration, screening, sorting of patients, finding a spot to do their actions. Some parents, guardians and teachers assisted their patients, some teachers were also the patient themselves. Another group took care of the oral health lectures of the students while the RC Cosmopolitan Cubao group took care of the school kit distributions. As if we had a single conductor, these activities were synchronized. The final rewards for completing the oral health lecture and dental check up were the school kits (according to grade levels) and a wholesome snack of chockolate flavored oatmeal. It was an efficient system that nobody was left out. Even the high school students of Tawangan Lusod National High School, Taaw, Kabayan who arrived late that day were all served. Total of 175 students in grades 7 to 10 had to walk an hour to reach the project site. The unavoidable (more or less three hours) brownout did not dampen the spirit of the volunteers and beneficiaries. Tooth extraction continued while some patiently waited outside the school. They cheered when the power resumed at around 5:00 pm. The churning sounds of the portable machines were once again heard as the volunteers sprung back to action. It was around past 8:00 pm when the last patient was served. Volunteers cheered, it was time for them to enjoy their dinner together. It was a bit chilly inside the classroom due to the intermitent rain that late afternoon. Clean and pleasant smelling comforters provided by the villagers gave a feeling of a hotel-like accomodation sleeping inside the Tawangan Elementary School classroom. No temperature adjustments for the room temperatre; everyone curled up for a good night of rest.
