THE FOUR-WAY TEST OF THE THINGS WE THINK, SAY OR DO SA LAHAT NG MGA BAGAY NA ATING IISIPIN, SASABIHIN O GAGAWIN
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages and Rotarians and recite it at club meetings.
1 IsItoitbatheayTRUTH? KATOTOHANAN? to all concerned? 2 IsItoitbaFAIR ay MAKATARUNGAN para sa lahat? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? 3 Makapagdudulot ba ito ng MABUTING KALOOBAN at mas mabuting PAGKAKAIBIGAN?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
4 KAPI-PAKINABANG ba ito para sa lahat? ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life. 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect. 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world. 4. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians.
Invocation We beseech thee, heavenly Father, to bestow thy grace upon us, As we strive to restore the vibrancy of our club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao,
Grant us great hope and faith that we can: Trough Your blessing, encouragement and inspiration: Help us to be committed and engaged Rotarians; Willing to contribute unselfishly our vocation, our skills and talents, wisdom, time, energy and other material resources ; For the service of those who are in need in the society and the humanity. Regenerate friendship amongst us as we enjoy wholesome fellowship with one another: Remind us Lord that you are a perfect Father who listens carefully to his children and desires the very best for them. Guide us in every meeting, in every activity that we do, continue pouring your blessings upon us that all we do shall serve meaningful purpose;
We ask all of these in your Holy Name, Almighty Father.
AMEN

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE TGP Jesus “Jess” de Castro Tumaneng President, RY 2017,-18 “You have to be stronger than your obstacles and braver than your fears.”
T
his is the lesson I have learned when fazed by a number of obstacles that seemed to hinder the success of the 4th meeting last Thursday. The heavy rains as well as the begging off of a number of members cast a doubt to continue the scheduled meeting or not. With the early preparations done, the confirmation of the guest speaker, with the important agenda to be taken up for decisions, the willingness of the other members to come: as the saying goes, “the show must go on!” My faith and confidence that God will bless this meeting has prevailed in my decision. When everything was exhausted in the preparation I prayed to Him to handle the rest. Heading to the Rotary Center I counted the members who are confirmed to come. There were only 6. It would be disappointing to our speaker to give a talk to only few members in attendance although earlier I talked to him and told him my predicament and he suggested that we may reschedule his talk to another date. But still I insisted to come to our club meeting. Amazingly before the arrival of our guest the attendance has reached 12, good enough to satisfy and encourage our speaker to give his talk. We are ready to start but set back ensued... a sudden brown out! Yet the proceedings moved on unfazed, our speaker has a mini projector which was used to start his

presentation. As the presentation went on, members and guests came and filled up the room. All the odds have turned into blessings, making the evening delightful, having a prolific speaker giving us a wonderful learning experience and ending the night with an enjoyable fellowship. Astonishingly the attendance reached 20! I WAS DEEPLY TOUCHED by PDG Melito “Bimbo” Salazar’s excellent presentation, his great understanding of the situation, and his magnanimity; I wish he could spare another opportunity of doing another presentation in the future. On this day of odds, I have seen the commitment of the members to the club, and if this commitment sustains we shall be positive to achieve all our goals. I also want to acknowledge all efforts given by IPP and Secretary Nikko Cayaga in printing the weekly Cosmopolitan Review, and PP Romy Tan and PP Noy Vargas for articles contributed in our club bulletin. I wish to encourage our members to give their share more substance in our bulletin. As I continue my duties as president to the club , I would like to report to you all the activities that we have accomplished for the month of July and other activities I have participated in the district and other clubs as follows; July 1, 2017- attended the District Induction at Conrad Hotel. Let The Rain Pour Down Upon Us

hile bombs and bullets continue to rain in Marawi, heavy downpour and non-stop drizzle indundate some parts of Metro Manila and some lowlying provinces of Luzon. Almost everyone has their common prayer; for the fighting to stop in Mindanao and for the rains to stop in Luzon. Although classes were suspended in most cities, the Rotary Center in District 3780 was teeming with busy Rotarians. Each has his or her own reason for being there despite the unforgiving weatherand the power outage. Turn over ceremonies, inductions, club anniversaries or regular Club meetings were happening almost simultaneously. RC Cosmopolitan Cubao was one of those having a special activity. No less than Past District Governor Melito “Bimbo” Salazar Jr. was their guest speaker. Speaking from the heart and his decades of experiences in Rotary and as a teacher too, he guided everone to the path of the great Filipino Rotarian leaders. He shared with the Club trivia from the year he became President of RC Diliman in 1984-1985. He lectured the Club on important traits past Rotarian leaders had. To mention a few, Don Eugenio Lopez Sr. who was born rich yet he expanded their family’s riches and never forgot his roots. He reminded everone to never forget the accomplishments of the past and where you have started. Carlos P. Romulo had some communication skills problem but was able to overcome it. His advice is to utilize your strength and improve

on your weaknesses. Senator Gil Puyat who’s a Past District Governor once said that service knows no age. Gen. Douglas McArthur who became an honorary member of Rotary Club of Manila; one must fulfill his promise. Just like Rotarians who promised to eradicate polio. The late general also never gave up; when he failed, he bounced back. The late Jessie Robredo, who was PDG Bimbo’s student in UP, also proved that accountability and transparency is important in an organization. He showed the need to “walk” with his members as a leader of an organization. PDG Bimbo also reminded the Club that a good leader must have good core values like integrity, leadership and fellowship. He stressed that the end does not justify the means. That the fruits of a culture of integrity in a Club are; increase in members, financial stability and peace. He also asked everyone to make Roatary their way of life. Through leadership, we give birth to the values of other people especially the new members. Lastly, through fellowship, service is rendered. Rotarians enjoy the company of his fellow members and together they create ways to serve. PDG Bimbo has transformed into a Rotarian leader past R.I. Pres. Edward Cadman molded him to be; way back in Rotary Year 1984 – 1985. As their Rotary theme had it, he indeed “Discover a new world of service”. Power is back as occasional heavy rains blessed the District 3780 and the rest of Luzon.

20 REASONS TO BE A 1. FRIENDSHIP: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905. 2. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: The second original reason for Rotary’s beginning is business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others. 3. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development. 4. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education. Leadership: - learning how to motivate, influence, and lead leaders. 5. CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY: Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community. 6. CONTINUING EDUCATION: Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, nation, and world. Each meeting
10
provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics. 7. FUN: Rotary is fun, a lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The club projects are fun. Social activities are fun. The service is fun. 8. PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS: Many individuals who joined Rotary were afraid to speak in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills. 9. CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD: Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International.” There are few places on the globe that do not have a Rotary club. Every Rotarian is welcome – even encouraged – to attend any of the 29,000 clubs in 194 nations and geographical regions. This means instant friends in both one’s own community and in the world community. 10. ASSISTANCE WHEN TRAVELING: Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a Rotarian in need of a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice, etc., while traveling has found assistance through Rotary. 11. ENTERTAINMENT: Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities that provide diversion in one’s business life. Rotary holds conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education, and service.

A ROTARIAN

12. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS: Every week and at various events and functions, Rotary develops one’s personality, social skills and people skills. Rotary is for people who like people. 13. FAMILY PROGRAMS: Rotary provides one of the world’s largest youth exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotarians; opportunities for spouse involvement; and a host of activities designed to help family members in growth and the development of family values. 14. VOCATIONAL SKILLS: Every Rotarian is expected to take part in the growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to serve on committees and to teach youth about one’s job or vocation. Rotary helps to make one a better doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc... 15. THE DEVELOPMENT OF ETHICS: Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test that governs one’s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships. 16. CULTURAL AWARENESS: Around the world, practically every religion, country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color, and ethnic identity is found in Rotary. It is a cross section of the world’s most prominent citizens from every background. Rotarians become aware of their cultures and

learn to love and work with people everywhere. They become better citizens of their countries in the process. 17. PRESTIGE: Rotary members are prominent people: leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy. 18. NICE PEOPLE: Rotarians above all are nice people - the nicest people on the face of the earth. They are important people who follow the policy of it is nice to be important but it is important to be nice. 19. THE ABSENCE OF AN “OFFICIAL CREED”: Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meeting or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others. 20. THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE: Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind. Its product is service. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to sense the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and return of that satisfaction to one’s own life. It is richly rewarding.

TOGETHER, WE HAVE FUN Two campers are hiking in the woods when one is bitten on the rear end by a rattlesnake. “I’ll go into town for a doctor,” the other says. He runs ten miles to a small town and finds the only doctor delivering a baby. “I can’t leave,” the doctor says. “But here’s what to do. Take a knife, cut a little X where the bite is, suck out the poison and spit it on the ground.” The guy runs back to his friend, who is in agony. “What did the doctor say?” the victim cries. “He says you’re gonna die.”
A very successful lawyer parked his brand-new Mercedes in front of his office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck passed too close and completely tore off the door on the driver’s side. The lawyer immediately grabbed his cell phone, dialed 911, and within minutes a policeman pulled up. Before the officer had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically. His Mercedes, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter what the body shop did to it.
Two doctors and an HMO manager die and line up together at the Pearly Gates. One doctor steps forward and tells St. Peter, “As a pediatric surgeon, I saved hundreds of children.” St. Peter lets him enter.
When the lawyer finally wound down from his ranting and raving, the officer shook his head in disgust and disbelief. “I can’t believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said. “You are so focused on your possessions that you don’t notice anything else.”
The next doctor says, “As a psychiatrist, I helped thousands of people live better lives.” St. Peter tells him to go ahead.
“How can you say such a thing?” asked the lawyer.
The last man says, “I was an HMO manager. I got countless families cost-effective health care.”
The cop replied, “Don’t you know that your left arm is missing from the elbow down? It must have been torn off when the truck hit you.”
St. Peter replies, “You may enter. But,” he adds, “you can only stay for three days. After that, you can go to hell.”
“What!” screamed the lawyer. “My Rolex is gone!”

TOGETHER, WE INSPIRE When you see a man selling handkerchiefs and still sweating profusely in traffic, it tells you that possession is not the same as ownership! Your life belongs to God; you are only having it but you don’t own it. So, be careful what you do with your life before the owner asks for it.
even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal.
The last wishes of Alexander the Great On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes:
3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is : TIME.
1. The best doctors should carry his coffin 2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery 3. His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see!! One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: 1. I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death,
14
2. I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth , will stay on earth.
We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back . Our time is our life !. The best present that you can give to your family and other people close to us is your TIME and to God is your LIFE..

History of RCCC Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao
CHARTERED AUGUST 20, 1985
A
friend approached Judge Constante “Tante” de Peralta one day. His friend, a District Governor Special Representative of Rotary International District 380, DGSR Oscar Inocentes or Oca to friends was organizing a new Rotary Club and Judge Tante was, he thought of himself, the person who can start things moving. So in July of 1985, they started the wheels turning, culminating to the chartering of a new Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao. The first meeting of the budding club was held on July 11, 1985. DGSR Oca provided the venue. The Inocentes Farm House, which has been home for the Club over many years. In just more than a month of hectic preparations and organizations, the club received its charter from Rotary International on August 20, 1985. The club continues its meetings every Thursdays at Inocentes Farm House from 7:30 PM onwards. Then on September 21, 1985, the historic presentation was done with no less than the District Governor Fernando “Nanding” Pedrosa as guest of honor and speaker.

RCCC Creed I believe in the ideals of Rotary which is my mission, my concern, and my way of life. I believe in the fortitude and foresight of its founders, their hopes and dreams; that someday, somehow, PEACE will be abound. In my own little way, I’ll do my part with my fellow Rotarians, my friends, my brother, my teammates in SERVICE, with them. I believe that I am much wanted, much needed because everything that we think, say or do is for a noble cause. I shall not foreswear because I am now committed. For Rotary has now become a part of me and so long as I exist I shall give life to it sustain it, care for it and live with it.
The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Avenues of Service We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan. • Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society.
