THE FOUR-WAY TEST OF THE THINGS WE THINK, SAY OR DO SA LAHAT NG MGA BAGAY NA ATING IISIPIN, SASABIHIN O GAGAWIN

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages and Rotarians and recite it at club meetings.

1 IsItoitbatheayTRUTH? KATOTOHANAN? to all concerned? 2 IsItoitbaFAIR ay MAKATARUNGAN para sa lahat? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? 3 Makapagdudulot ba ito ng MABUTING KALOOBAN at mas mabuting PAGKAKAIBIGAN?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

4 KAPI-PAKINABANG ba ito para sa lahat? ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life. 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect. 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world. 4. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians.

Invocation We beseech thee, heavenly Father, to bestow thy grace upon us, As we strive to restore the vibrancy of our club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao,

Grant us great hope and faith that we can: Trough Your blessing, encouragement and inspiration: Help us to be committed and engaged Rotarians; Willing to contribute unselfishly our vocation, our skills and talents, wisdom, time, energy and other material resources ; For the service of those who are in need in the society and the humanity. Regenerate friendship amongst us as we enjoy wholesome fellowship with one another: Remind us Lord that you are a perfect Father who listens carefully to his children and desires the very best for them. Guide us in every meeting, in every activity that we do, continue pouring your blessings upon us that all we do shall serve meaningful purpose;

We ask all of these in your Holy Name, Almighty Father.

AMEN

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE TGP Jesus “Jess” de Castro Tumaneng President, RY 2017-18

I

am happy to inform you that draft of our club’s plans and programs for this rotary years has been completed during a meeting attended by some Directors and Service Chairmen last August 6, 2017 at 9 Lanzones St., Project 2, Quezon City. Present were PP Nonoy Vargas, PP Romy Tan, IPP Nikko Cayaga, PE Willy Mirafuentes and myself; and witnessed by Rtn Ed Magdaluyo and Rtn Cora Mallare. We had a brainstorming on the various aspects of the report before it was decided to translate it to hard copy which will be presented in today’s meeting. Today we are expecting to meet our District Coordinator, PP Rey Remonde and Assistant Governor PP Gerry Ledesma to review and give insights on how we can present these plans and programs during the Governor’s Visit in the most proper and effective way. I have informed all that’s involved in the Governor’s Visit to be present in this meeting and get the necessary pointers from our DS/DDS and AG for an excellent presentation. I am also overjoyed by the confirmation of 11 new members to join us in the club. To this date we have officially registered them to R.I. and are ready to be inducted during our

4

Charter anniversary and induction of officers and new members on August 20, 2017. We have exceeded our target for membership growth and with the additional members, we can strengthen further the club’s performance of service projects planned for the community and achieve new vibrancy. I am also thankful for a good attendance and a fruitful meeting last Thursday. We have already formed a habit of having good attendance and good meetings since we have started last July. I really hope that we can sustain this good habit until the end of the term. I also commend the good handling of the meeting by PP Rolly Garcia who added Rotary Information about history of initiation of women members in Rotary. The story has given us an idea of how legal battles won the acceptance of women members. He also reminded us about this month, August, is the Buwan ng Wika which was initiated by President Manuel L. Quezon who also founded Quezon City. During also this meeting PP Nonoy Vargas

emphasized the value of good preparation for the Governor’s Visit; the reason for scheduling a special meeting for this purpose last August 6, 2017. He also admonishes for good preparation of the participants during the Charter Anniversary. I was glad about PP William Lo Ang’s initiative to discuss about concerns on reaching the goal of raising the funds of $3000 which I have pledged during the PETS on behalf of the club. With 10 members pledging for sustaining membership and one for Paul Harris Fellow, we are after another Paul Harris Fellow to make our pledge accomplished. Good luck PP William Lo Ang and good luck to us!

August 3, 2017 Thursday Planning and Preparation for Governor’s Visit /Club Induction / Charter Anniversary 5th Regular Meeting. Discussions about the Plans and Programs of RCCC and preparation for the upcoming 3-in-1 event, the Official District Governor’s Visit, Club Induction and Charter Anniversary.

My thanks to PP Bembot Aldecoa for taking care of the collection of membership dues as well as the payments of ads for our souvenir program. Rtn Ronald Ng last meeting has delivered payments for the ads for the inside front cover, back cover and inside back cover courtesy of Rtn Ahan Chong. I hope this meeting we can still expect some more turnover of payments to ensure our expenses for our 3 in 1 affair will be adequately funded. To all I extend my gratitude for all what you are doing good for the club. As we continue our good deeds, we are fulfilling our vision; “ to be a vibrant club of men and women bound by the ideals of service and fellowship, sharing the passion to help the needy, serve the community and preserve the environment.” Let’s go for excellence RCCC!!!

The Metamorphosis of RC Cosmo Cubao by PP Romy Tan

T

he relentless fight against drugs of the present administration is both admirable and gruesome. True; no president ever focused on the fight against these illegal drugs. Thugs nowadays graduated into the next level of cruelty and violence. The Middle East style of self-expression cultivated a rich number of drug crazed fanatics in the name of Islam. This administration is fast enough to curb the trend that reached the shores of our Muslim brothers and sisters. The narco-politics that beset this administration is painting a gruesome picture of the change-in-progress that is happening in this country. The Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao is likewise undergoing some sort of metamorphosis. As expected from a 30 plus year old club, young bloods are being injected into the core group. The more than three decades of existence developed the culture and traditions that needed to be revisited. This Rotary year, President Jess is persistent enough to make a difference. Just like what he does best in his dental clinic, he patiently steers the Club into moving in a new direction. A new ambience can now be felt during the meeting proper.

6

PP Noy Vargas was tasked to inform the Club about the details of the upcoming Governor’s Visit. He explained the need for the fine details for the benefit of the new members. He sounded to be raising the red flag since the final date is already fast approaching. Pres. Jess called for another side meeting to discuss the details further. PP Fred even volunteered his place for the said meeting. Road re-blocking and expected heavy traffic forced everyone to move the meeting back to Lanzones St. PP Lo Ang sounded out a distress call about the TRF (The Rotary Foundation). This being his report during the GV (Governor’s Visit) in a few days, Pres. Jess went on a fishing expedition. Fortunately, he did not go home empty handed. His TRF pledge of $3,000.00 to the district is now closer to its fulfillment after several if not majority of the members present that night also made their pledges. PP Bill did it again; being a good sounding board that amplifies a whisper into a shout. The idea of an EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) Club soon followed. Members needed a simple arithmetic to realize that EREY is not impossible to dream of. Besides, Cosmopolites are dreamers and dream makers. They are often dream catchers too.

R.I.

CORNER

HOW FLEXIBILITY HAS BENEFITED OUR CLUB By Suman Satish Sharma, immediate past president of the Rotary Club of Mumbai Dahisar, India

S

ince our club decided to pursue changes in our meeting frequency and format, we have had many good results. Previously, we had taken a very conservative approach to the number of meetings, and our presidents found it difficult to find good speakers, leaving them little time to pursue meaningful projects. Following the 2016 Council on Legislation’s actions allowing greater flexibility, we decided to begin holding two regular meetings a month. It is very relaxing and gives us time to plan projects. Board members are even finding it convenient to attend board meetings without feeling overburdened. For our members who are doctors, advocates, or otherwise busy professionals, it

has been a welcome relief and has made our club more attractive to future members. It has also reduced our budget. We do not have to bear the cost of meetings where few people were turning out anyway, and so we have been able to reduce our dues. This has made the club more attractive and we have added a few members as a result. If we have a larger project going on, we convert one of our regular meetings into a session to discuss the project. Our busy professionals can streamline their work and have a bigger impact on our club. This initiative was much needed and we appreciate it.

Rotary Community Corps lets local volunteers tap into our organization’s network By Brad Webber | Illustrations by Jing Zhang

M

obilizing more than 200,000 volunteers across 92 countries, the Rotary Community Corps expands Rotary’s reach by bringing the knowledge and talents of local people to projects in their communities. Sponsored by a local club, corps members are not Rotarians but can tap into the Rotary network. Conceived as the Rotary Village Corps during the term of RI President M.A.T. Caparas in the late 1980s, the Rotary Community Corps (RCC) was initially viewed as a program for the developing world. Even today, most of the 9,400 RCCs are concentrated in India, followed by the Philippines and Africa. About 60 are sponsored by clubs in the United States; Canada hosts four. Every community corps differs in size and scope.

TOGETHER, WE HAVE FUN NOTABLE NEVER-ISMS

THE TROUBLE WITH DATING

• Never try to tell everything you know. It may take too short a time. —Norman Ford

Dating is complicated. You don’t believe us? Here are some examples:

• Never trust a man when he’s in love, drunk, or running for office. —Shirley Maclaine

Right after we broke up, my ex-girlfriend called to ask how to change her relationship status on Facebook.

• Never board
a commercial

hurry to terminate a marriage. You
may need this person to finish a sentence. —Erma Bombeck • Never argue with a doctor; he has inside information. —Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding • Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level; it’s cheaper. — Quentin

I got into a 90-minute argument with my girlfriend because she was adamant that Moby Dick was a true story. I finally let her win so I could go to sleep. My now ex-girlfriend and I were in my room one day, and the Internet was particularly slow. After I complained, she suggested that I untangle my Ethernet cord so that more Internet could get through. I recently joined an online dating site, and one of my matches was my first cousin.

Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

History of RCCC Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao

CHARTERED AUGUST 20, 1985

A

friend approached Judge Constante “Tante” de Peralta one day. His friend, a District Governor Special Representative of Rotary International District 380, DGSR Oscar Inocentes or Oca to friends was organizing a new Rotary Club and Judge Tante was, he thought of himself, the person who can start things moving. So in July of 1985, they started the wheels turning, culminating to the chartering of a new Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao. The first meeting of the budding club was held on July 11, 1985. DGSR Oca provided the venue. The Inocentes Farm House, which has been home for the Club over many years. In just more than a month of hectic preparations and organizations, the club received its charter from Rotary International on August 20, 1985. The club continues its meetings every Thursdays at Inocentes Farm House from 7:30 PM onwards. Then on September 21, 1985, the historic presentation was done with no less than the District Governor Fernando “Nanding” Pedrosa as guest of honor and speaker.

RCCC Creed I believe in the ideals of Rotary which is my mission, my concern, and my way of life. I believe in the fortitude and foresight of its founders, their hopes and dreams; that someday, somehow, PEACE will be abound. In my own little way, I’ll do my part with my fellow Rotarians, my friends, my brother, my teammates in SERVICE, with them. I believe that I am much wanted, much needed because everything that we think, say or do is for a noble cause. I shall not foreswear because I am now committed. For Rotary has now become a part of me and so long as I exist I shall give life to it sustain it, care for it and live with it.

The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Avenues of Service We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan. • Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in An Introduction to Vocational Service and the Code of Conduct. • Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more. • Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.
