THE FOUR-WAY TEST OF THE THINGS WE THINK, SAY OR DO SA LAHAT NG MGA BAGAY NA ATING IISIPIN, SASABIHIN O GAGAWIN

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages and Rotarians and recite it at club meetings.

1 IsItoitbatheayTRUTH? KATOTOHANAN? to all concerned? 2 IsItoitbaFAIR ay MAKATARUNGAN para sa lahat? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? 3 Makapagdudulot ba ito ng MABUTING KALOOBAN at mas mabuting PAGKAKAIBIGAN?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

4 KAPI-PAKINABANG ba ito para sa lahat? ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life. 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect. 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world. 4. Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians.

Invocation We beseech thee, heavenly Father, to bestow thy grace upon us, As we strive to restore the vibrancy of our club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao,

Grant us great hope and faith that we can: Trough Your blessing, encouragement and inspiration: Help us to be committed and engaged Rotarians; Willing to contribute unselfishly our vocation, our skills and talents, wisdom, time, energy and other material resources ; For the service of those who are in need in the society and the humanity. Regenerate friendship amongst us as we enjoy wholesome fellowship with one another: Remind us Lord that you are a perfect Father who listens carefully to his children and desires the very best for them. Guide us in every meeting, in every activity that we do, continue pouring your blessings upon us that all we do shall serve meaningful purpose;

We ask all of these in your Holy Name, Almighty Father.

AMEN

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE TGP Jesus “Jess” de Castro Tumaneng President, RY 2017-18

I

t was a Thursday of surprises last week when every one had fun and cordial interactions. It really surpised when suddenly Rotarian Vic Villareal appeared in the meeting after more than a year of absence. Of course we missed him like other members whom we have not seen for a long time, and since we are eager to hear from him he was put on the spot for the “Anything Goes” portion. His sharing of his travel experiences drawn a lot of interest from the membersand gave us a very entertaining moment. Welcome Vic and we hope to see you often in the club activities. It was also a surprise when a food delivery came and provided us packed lunch which came from Rotarian Ahan Chong who celebrated his _th birthday last September 7. Though he was not present in the meeting, in spirit we felt his presence. We really hope we can experience your company more often. I thank all members for all your opinions , comments, and suggestions regarding all issues taken up in the meeting. As agreed last meeting classification talks will start today with PP Romy Tan as our initial speaker. I myself is very much interested to know more about PP Romy and how he applies his vocation to be useful in his life, in the community and in Rotary.Hope this will also encourage all our

4

members to contribute his vocation by way of classification talk. Last Sunday we started the ball rolling when the club bowling team participated in the District Annual Rotabowl. We had a nice fellowship with members present during the event and with friends from other clubs. We participated in the opening ceremony and best muse and best uniform selections. We did not expect to win but we showed our interest and sense of participation in this District Affair.I feel we have a good team to compete in this year’s tourney. What is important is how we gonna play the best we can and accept whatever the outcome in the end in an sportmanly manner. Our Team Captain PP William Lo Ang is now preparing the strategy for the game. At this juncture I would like to emphasize that teamwork plays a vital role in this competition. working and supporting one another will motivate and inspire us to put up an excellent game. I would like share an encouraging message from PDG Jess Cifra about the importance of teamwork in various club activities. Please read on....... Giving the best of one’s self is not enough to carry the load of ensuring success for the

club. Working together or teamwork is the key. And when I think about teamwork, birds come to my mind. Like birds of the same feather, Rotarians share the same ideal of helping others. And like birds that flock together, Rotarians come together to share their time, talents, and resources. William Blake, the great English poet, painter and printmaker once said, “No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.” This is stirring reference to leadership.A leader must have a team of officers to work with. A leader must must inspire others to work with him to be able to reach the goals of the club. In the words of Aristotle, the Greek philosopher and the teacher of Alexander the Great; he said, “One swallow does not make summer.” The leader’s

success does not make the club’s success. The club success is the total of the succcess of all the teams put together. People are like birds. When birds fly togetherlike geese in V-formation, the updraft of the birds in front lifts the birds at the rear and they fly effortlessly together to their destination. This is what we call teamwork-working together, giving the best of yourself, the best of your talents- to contribute to the team’s success. Individual achievements-the best that each one can achieve- put together, can make a sterling performance that can make the difference between a simple or magnificent success. LET US CONTINUE THE GOOD WORK WE STARTED TOGETHER!

A Blockbuster Ghost Month of August by PP Romy Tan

R

otary Center, D-3780 - The rregular Thursday Club meeting of RC Cosmopolitan Cubao turned into a surprise birthday treat. Rtn. Ahan should have missed his fellow Cosmopolites as he sent food packs to the Club thru Rtn. Ronald. Surprised busy heads were greeted by an Alex III food delivery; looking for IPP Nikko to hand over several boxes of chicken barbeque. Everybody was touched and awed by the act of this fine gentleman. This led to the Club’s singing a birthday song for the celebrant Rtn. Ahan, recorded by IPP Nikko thru his cellphone camera. This also triggered the president to call for a fifteen minute recess to give more time for the members to enjoy the delicious meal. This recess is the very first in this Club, so far. The president resumed the meeting and enumerated all his wishes for the month of September. PP Jimmuel had a very interesting inputs he shared with the Club when he was assigned to deliver The Four Way Test. Not only that he was the one who translated it to Filipino, he also mentioned that some of our historical figures practiced the four way test during their time. PP Noy was also

6

quick to mention the Bible’s relevance to The Four Way Test or even the vice versa. Since it might spark a religious debate, the Club’s professor/ historian promised to look more closely into the connection of the Rotary’s Test and our revolutionary ancestor heroes. Although he already did mention some names who had chronicled some of the practices, it would be better if PP/Dr. Jimmuel be the one to do an article about it. This writer hopes to see that very first article in this Bulletin; the sooner the better. Maybe this is another first in the district. It’s good to see it printed in the Rotary information section of the Cosmopolitan Review or even the GML Can this Club really make a mark at the Rotabowl? This writer is asking after pondering about the Club’s fate during the past Rotary Bowling tournaments. Looking at the 32 colorful years of the Club in the field of sports fellowship, the Club once showed the mark of a champion. The venue was in Farmer’s Plaza. Let us hope to find that photograpgh of the event to prove that part of our Club’s history; hoping to duplicate it this time. Let us also hope the younger competitors show respect to elders

as RCCC keglers are mostly dual citizens, for now. This Club plays for fun and camaraderie, meeting new and old friends in Rotary. Yes we love to win but not to strain and put stress on our aching joints and tender muscles. Let us twist our hips as we guide the ball to a strike, hit the air as we make a spare and frown in despair when the ball goes nowhere. Afterall, the Cosmopolites just want to have fun! Just a tidbit of current events while we are having fun here in Manila, the war

in Marawi is coming to a close. With only twenty or so hectares of land controlled by the terrorists, the AFP and PNP forces are slowly closing in. Casualties among the government side is about 147, 600 plus from the terror groups and more or less 60 from the civilians. More deaths to come as booby traps and close quarter battle get more intense due to desperations on the part of the terror groups. Let us all pray to our All Mighty that peace comes quick in that part of our country. Mabuhay ang Malayang Pilipinas.

R.I.

CORNER

ENJOYING THE BENEFITS OF DUAL MEMBERSHIP IN ROTARY, ROTARACT ByPetar Pešić, a member of the Rotary Club of Nis,

D

riven by a desire to help my local community, I discovered Rotaract when I was attending the Faculty of Law at the University of Niš, Serbia. In the Rotaract Club of Nis, I met a number of young people who, like me, shared an interest in improving our community. It made our actions easier that we all shared the same goal, and we took part in many projects that made us visible in the community. Belonging to Rotaract basically gives you free access to great mentors in your host Rotary club. They are always there to point you in the right direction and assist you in discovering better ways of doing things. I did not know it at the time, but every project I was a part of and every meeting and event I organized helped me for my professional work as a lawyer. By working on service projects, I learned much about correspondence, negotiations, and drafting documents, all things I now do on a daily basis. Wherever I went, whether Berlin, London, or Split, Croatia, I had somebody to call, someone local to meet, or to show me around. Our network is as diverse and global as it possibly gets. For me, life without traveling is meaningless. In addition, I love to travel. For me, life without traveling is meaningless. Rotaract gave me so many opportunities to travel around the world, taking part in service projects, and meeting interesting people. In fact, it was memories of all

8

my great travels with Rotaract that compelled me to seek out and join the Rotary Club of Nis, Serbia, when I learned about the new rule changes that allow Rotaractors to also become members of Rotary at the same time. Both Rotaract and Rotary have given me so much. In Rotary, I meet people who have more experience in life than I. Being in their company even for a few minutes a week allows me to hear from their different perspectives. I am learning to embrace diversity. That is the “school of life,” as I like to call it, that you get in Rotary. Also, because Rotary members generally have access to greater resources, everything in Rotary is bigger. Projects involve more people and have a deeper impact on society. That is why I am excited to step up and expand on what I have learned in Rotaract as a member of my Rotary club. I have just completed serving as my district’s Rotaract representative covering Serbia and Montenegro. At the age of 25, and now a Rotarian, I am looking forward to meeting new people across the globe, organizing new projects and spreading the idea of “Service Above Self.” Throughout Membership and New Club Development month, we will be featuring blog posts that focus on club flexibility. From a hybrid club to dual membership, these posts feature clubs who have benefited greatly from restructuring or implementing new membership options.

History of RCCC Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao

CHARTERED AUGUST 20, 1985

A

friend approached Judge Constante “Tante” de Peralta one day. His friend, a District Governor Special Representative of Rotary International District 380, DGSR Oscar Inocentes or Oca to friends was organizing a new Rotary Club and Judge Tante was, he thought of himself, the person who can start things moving. So in July of 1985, they started the wheels turning, culminating to the chartering of a new Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Cosmopolitan Cubao. The first meeting of the budding club was held on July 11, 1985. DGSR Oca provided the venue. The Inocentes Farm House, which has been home for the Club over many years. In just more than a month of hectic preparations and organizations, the club received its charter from Rotary International on August 20, 1985. The club continues its meetings every Thursdays at Inocentes Farm House from 7:30 PM onwards. Then on September 21, 1985, the historic presentation was done with no less than the District Governor Fernando “Nanding” Pedrosa as guest of honor and speaker.

I believe in the fortitude and foresight of its founders, their hopes and dreams; that someday, somehow, PEACE will be abound. For Rotary has now become a part of me and so long as I exist I shall give life to it sustain it, care for it and live with it.

The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Avenues of Service We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity. • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong.
