LETTER FROM THE EDITOR More and more voices are raised demanding that administrations and professionals take action to curb climate change. On January 1, Royal Decree 1051/2022 was implemented in Spain, establishing the rules for sustainable nutrition in agricultural soils and consolidating the changes announced in terms of slurry management. The new regulations seek to reduce gas emissions, especially ammonia, and avoid soil and aquifers contamination.

XL Drive unit for automatic chain system. All those actions that can be implemented to reduce emissions are and will be welcome. However, it is not fair that the same financial sectors always be outlawed. In this sense, according to the Spanish emissions roster system, those derived from pork production represent only 2% of the total GHG (greenhouse gases) of the country, even though it is the third largest producer of pork in the world. Aware of the need to contribute to making things better and better in favour of animal welfare, sustainability and coexistence with the environment, Rotecna created the Tecnapur product line in 2018. A clear commitment to the circular economy and the valorisation of slurry as an organic fertilizer (solid parts), as well as the use of the liquid part resulting from its management for the irrigation of agricultural farms. Solid-liquid separation, a physicochemical management system or slurry acidification are some of the solutions that hundreds of farmers are already implementing on their farms to reuse slurry and reduce gas emissions.

As a leading provider of innovative solutions for the pork industry we are aware of the importance and value of the World Pork Expo within the American and global pork industry. For this reason, Rotecna has once again decided to be present at this event, considered one of the most significant in the sector worldwide. Together with our distributor in the United States, and with the aim of expanding our presence on American farms, from June 7th to June 10th, we have shown the most innovative solutions from our brand. These include electronic feeding systems for gestating and farrowing sows (Dositronic G and Dositronic M), the Tecnapur slurry management system, and Silotronic, a laser technology sensor that provides real-time information on feed levels in the facilities from anywhere. This year, the expo has celebrated its 35th edition with an extensive program featuring educational seminars and networking opportunities among various actors in the swine industry attending the event. In addition, 4
its exhibition area has had the presence of more than 600 brands from all over the world. Despite the current situation where inflation and high production costs are daily challenges, the exhibition has recieved more than 10,000 producers and professionals associated with the pork sector to discover the latest innovations and technologies developed for pig farming.
Iowa, the largest pork-producing state in the United States The pork industry in Iowa remains a crucial pillar of the local economy. With over 22 million pigs raised annually and more than 5,400 swine farms, the state continues to be a national leader in pork production. However, current challenges have brought uncertainty. International trade tensions and disease outbreaks have impacted prices and demand. Moreover, concerns about environmental issues associated with large-scale pork production have intensified. Nonetheless, producers are embracing advanced technologies and more sustainable practices to ensure efficiency and quality in Iowa’s pork production.

SOMETHINGABOUT
AIGÜESTORTES NATIONAL PA With an area of around 105 square kilometres, the park offers fairy-tale postcard landscapes. The Aigüestortes National Park is one of the gates to paradise offered by the Catalan Pyrenees, a place that allows us to appreciate nature in its purest form. Located between the Catalan regions of El Pallars Sobirà, Val d’Aran and Alta Ribagorça, and with an area of around 105 square kilometres, the park offers fairy-tale postcard landscapes with peaks that exceed 3,000 meters tall, rivers, ravines, marshes, more than 200 ponds of different shapes and colours and a large number of animal and plant species. And if anywhere stands out among all those in the park, this would be the pond of Sant Maurici, a beautiful spot at the bottom of Els Encantats, considered to be one of the most exemplary landscapes of Catalonia. The place is commonly visited by mountain enthusiasts, who have numerous route and itinerary options. In this sense, hiking, mountain biking, hill-walking, mountain skiing and trekking are widely practised activities, both privately and through organizing companies.
Flora and fauna The vegetation of the park changes as you keep climbing. The valley floors are full of mixed forests of deciduous trees. Further up, fir trees emerge from the shadows, and the black pine, the most resistant tree to the long and cold, mountainous 6

winters, reigns in the highest places. Above the forest periphery, alpine meadows emerge. Both in spring and summer, the meadows and rock crevices are colourfully dressed with blossoming gentians, arnicas, forget-me-nots or evergreens. On the other hand, its fauna is conditioned by the glaciations of the quaternary and is that, with the retreat of the ice, the peaks and Pyrenean forests became a refuge for different breeds of animals. The most common mammals in the place are the chamois, the ermine and the Iberian desman. In addition, in the valleys of Boí, there are species such as the tawny mouse or the tricolour shrew. As far as birds, the capercaillie and the white partridge can be seen, as are small populations of brown partridge. The bearded vulture and the griffon vulture are also observable. Among the reptiles, the viviparous lizard, the agile lizard and the Pyrenean lizard stand out. The Pyrenean newt is the main amphibian exponent here.
ARK AND LAKE SANT MAURICI There are also itineraries designed for people with reduced mobility. In addition, the Carros de Foc and Camins Vius crossings, as well as the GR 11 trail, are along these routes.
Starlight, a destination recognized by UNESCO
Routes During the summer, the park is filled with hikers, who trudge along every path. There are many choices, although some of the small trails that appear on the maps are difficult to find or require good physical condition. It is necessary to be sensible when planning to visit and to be informed in advance of the difficulty of the desired option. The park’s information centres offer itinerary brochures aimed especially at hikers, where easy and highly recommended day trips are proposed. Some of the most popular itineraries of the park are The path from Sant Maurici to Portarró de Espot; the Route of the fir trees, towards the needles of Amitges (Àneu valley), the Colomers circus Circuit (Val d’Aran), From Llong to Redó (valley of Boí), The valley of Besiberri (valley of Barravés), The lakes of the Mainera (valley of Àssua) and The valley of Lake Tort (Vall Fosca).
The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is one of the most well-preserved protected natural areas in southern Europe. To its natural and cultural attractions, exceptional conditions to practice astronomy must be added. Here, there are still some scattered villages hidden between mountains, as is the case of the 10 municipalities in the general park area, including the Vall de Boí, where we can experience an exceptionally black sky with countless stars. These regions deserve to be preserved as a Tourist Destination and Starlight Reserve (UNESCO). One of the standpoints that offer better views is that of Sant Quirc de Durro, where you can also find a small astronomical table with an explanation of the night sky.
Architectural heritage Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, in the valleys near the current National Park, a Lombard Romanesque style architecture was established. The Boí Valley is home to one of the most important monumental assemblages of Lombard Romanesque art in Europe and the most complete in the Pyrenees, with churches such as Sant Climent and Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Joan de Boí or Santa Eulàlia de Erill. On November 30th, 2000, the set of Romanesque churches of the Boí Valley was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 7

XL DRIVE UNIT FOR
AUTOMATIC CHAIN SYSTEM
Rotecna has designed a new model of traction machine for longer chain drag feeding systems. The greater travel of the tensioner pulley can absorb higher starting stresses, which combined with a reducer with 20% less rpm and more torque, allow longer systems to be made. In addition, the double-acting and interlocked pulley sensor protects the machine from both overvoltage and chain slackness and is very accessible to facilitate inspection and maintenance.
FEATURES: • Models with a 25 or 20-rpm reducer. • Internal chain tension system with viewfinder for easy adjustment. • Long-travel tension pulley with a double-action interlocking tension sensor.
8
The finishes of the machine and gear motor, and the internal chain tension system, improve tightness and reduce the space required for its installation. The new Rotecna traction machines have a traction pulley with a fuse on the shaft and independent synthetic cogs with a damping system, which increases the safety of the installation in case of jams, and extend the life of the traction chain by reducing stress and wear of the plastic dowels.
ADVANTAGES: • Allows for making longer systems. • Longer life of the chain cleats. • Safer.
DROP OUTLETS
NEW MODELS WITH Ø63MM DOWNPIPE
Intending to increase the options for the installation of feed distribution systems on farms, Rotecna is expanding its family of drop inlets with two new models with a Ø63 mm downspout: The double drop outlet for Ø60 line for Ø63 drop. The simple drop outlet for Ø90 line for Ø63 drop. Rotecna’s double drop outlets are the best solution in those facilities with the need to supply different types of feed depending on the production phase. The Ø90 drop outlets, now available with Ø75 mm and Ø63 mm downspouts, are designed to be installed at a 45º inclination (recommendation). This model also has a system to facilitate the assembly of the food distribution systems, since they are attached to the line tube without the need for the installer to hold the outlet while installing the clamp to the distribution pipe, thus having both hands to work.
ADVANTAGES: • Easy use and quick installation.
FEATURES: • For lines of Ø60 and Ø90 mm. • Downpipes Ø63 mm and Ø75 mm. • Lateral profile that improves the fall of the feed. • Clipping system in the Ø90 outlets to the loading tubes, to facilitate installation. • High-resistance braided nylon rope.

GLOBALPIG F. BIETO: “WE INSTALLED TECNAPUR TO MAKE BETTER USE OF THE SLURRY TO FERTILIZE OUR FARMS” The cost of handling slurry with the Tecnapur system represents an approximate saving of one euro/cubic meter.
Faustino Bieto, manager of the Faixamata farms. Photo: Rotecna.
The Faixamata farm located in Seròs (Lleida) has been working since 2021 with the Tecnapur slurry management system. The installation of the mechanical separator (phase 1) and the physicochemical reactor (phase 2) on the farm have allowed it to transform the solid part of the slurry into an organic compost for the company’s agricultural farms, and take advantage of the liquid part in the drip irrigation system of these. To find out what the daily work they do with Tecnapur is and the results they obtain from the slurry management, we spoke with Faustino Bieto, responsible for the agricultural farms of Faixamata. How is the farm distributed? The Faixamata farm was built more than 40 years ago as a business alternative to agriculture. Over the years, the animal tally has increased to currently have four buildings for 10
fattening. Specifically, we have a warehouse with a capacity for 800 pigs, two of 1,200 and one of 1,500. How many people work on the farm? We are two people. An employee is in charge of the management of pigs and Tecnapur equipment, and I am in charge of the management and administrative aspects. Why did you decide to install the Tecnapur slurry management system on the farm? Mainly, to make better use of the solid and liquid parts we obtain from the slurry to fertilize our agricultural farms. The problem we had was the slurry extraction, as well as its management and all the limitations that occur when it’s applied to the fields directly. With the installation of Tecnapur Phase 1 and Phase 2, we can overcome these problems.
What is the slurry management process that you perform? All the farms are connected to the slurry swamp, from where we pump the slurry into the separator (phase 1). From there we remove the solid parts and send the liquid to the physicochemical reactor (phase 2), where a separation of the sludge from the liquid part happens. The latter is sent to a gathering pool to be used for drip irrigation of the farms. As for the solid part we obtain, we use it as composting by distributing it through the new farms, since it helps us with humic and fulvic acids, and to maintain optimal moisture in the soil and not let salinity rise in the ground. What are the results of this management process in figures? We treat about 50-55 cubic meters of slurry per day. Regarding the volume of initial slurry, in phase 1 we obtain 5% of solid matter, which we reserve for composting. In phase 2, we obtain 75% sludge, which we take to the drying
pools and then compost with the solid part of phase 1, and 20% liquid part that we send to the pond for irrigation. Economically, what is the cost per cubic meter of slurry separation? The cost of this system is about 2.5 – 3 euros / cubic meter, counting electricity, labour and necessary products for its operation. Compared to the costs we had to remove the slurry with vats, it is a significant reduction in costs. Approximately 1 euro difference per cubic meter. In Faixamata you have opted for the installation of the two phases of the Tecnapur system, what is the advantage? For us, the main advantage in the management of slurry is to work with the two phases of Tecnapur together, since this allows us to take advantage of the solid part that comes out of the separator as organic composting, increasing its volume with the solid part that

we obtain after drying the sludge that comes out of phase 2 (physicochemical reactor). And then, another great advantage of working with the two phases is the liquid part that we obtain from phase 2, which we take advantage of to infuse into the drip irrigation system that we have on the farms. In addition, now, even in a period of drought like the one we are experiencing, it is helping us to be able to irrigate our farms without problems. How is the daily work with the Tecnapur system? The operation of the Tecnapur system is very simple and basic. What we do daily is to visually control it, so that everything is working properly, that the acids and flocculant deposits 12
are at the correct level and that’s it. It is a system that has no difficulty and the time invested is minimal.
“In a period of drought like the one we are experiencing, Tecnapur is helping us to be able to irrigate our farms without problems”. What would you highlight about the service offered by Rotecna? They offer us a very good service. The truth is that whenever we have any doubts, it has a very good technical assistance helpdesk, which answers immediately.
What future challenges does the farm face? We currently do not have any expansion projects, so for now we are working to maintain production and continue to carry out a good slurry management to take advantage of both the solid and liquid parts we obtain, with which we are really satisfied.

FUTURENEWS
LET’S EXPLAIN HOW THINGS ARE DONE
General view of a farm. Photo: Rotecna.
It is vital that we make our story known, many of us strive towards that every day, contributing to things being done as well as possible Óscar Toledano. Sales Manager & BI Rotecna.
We see attacks against the pork sector in the media and networks every day, but we should not allow public opinion to think that we do not have the means or the will to produce high-quality meat, with high animal welfare and in a completely sustainable way, because it is not true. It is vital that we make our story known, many of us strive towards that every day, contributing to things being done as well as possible, and that the sector does not stop improving; we should explain what we do, and the impact it has, since we know first-hand how pork production works. 14
We should ensure that the pork sector is not accused of having a big negative impact on climate change, because that is not the case. According to the Spanish emissions inventory system, those derived from pork production represent only 2% of the country’s total GHG emissions (despite being the 3rd world producer and that the sector represents almost 2% of the total national GDP and 15% of Industrial GDP). On the other hand, a single return flight from Rome to Brussels emits more greenhouse gases per passenger than the production of meat consumed by one person in a year. We must also help people understand that part of
ON OUR FARMS
significant contribution to the fight against climate change. In addition, we have the knowledge and technology to do so at a lower cost than the use of other fertilizers, being able to provide cost savings and extra income to farmers, without risk of contaminating aquifers. We should ensure that intensive livestock farming is not labelled as being worse than extensive and/or organic livestock farming, because that is not the case.
our animals’ diet is based on by-products of the food industry and parts of plants that are not digestible by humans. In any case, we have made significant progress in reducing overall emissions and water use per kilogram of meat produced. We have the means to continue doing so and we will continue to work on the development of new techniques to go even further. We should also ensure that slurry is not labelled as a polluting substance, because that is not the case. Using slurry as a fertilizer reduces dependence on chemically synthesized fertilizers of extractive origin (whose generation and transport require huge amounts of energy) and its use improves the soil structure (increasing its capacity for carbon fixation). This has a
Modernisation, automation and the introduction of technology have led to a significant improvement in the working and living conditions of farmers and their animals, and thus an increase in health, animal welfare and productivity per unit of resource used, so that intensive production can be as or even more sustainable as extensive production. It implies the need for a minimum number of animals to guarantee the necessary income to be able to have enough labour to provide decent working conditions and generate sufficient income to be able to address the necessary investments in technology and facilities. Even so, the vast majority of Spanish farms are still owned by private farmers, part of cooperatives or family businesses deeply rooted in their territories. The term macro-farm is used derogatorily, but under no circumstance does the size of a farm imply lower animal welfare or greater environmental impact. Regarding animal welfare, it is not influenced by the total number of animals, but by the conditions in their environment, and the production efficiency and emissions and slurry management, which are more efficient if the appropriate technical means are available, meaning that a minimum volume to manage to make the necessary investments 15
FUTURENEWS is required. In addition, in Spain, the maximum size of a farm is limited by legislation following environmental and health criteria. We should ensure that farmers are not accused of mistreating their animals, because that is not the case. The European Union has one of the most demanding animal welfare legislations in the world, which as it is based on scientific evidence, has led us to achieve one of the highest levels of productivity in the world. Furthermore, work has begun on new legislation that minimizes the time animals are inside a cage, but many farmers already limit their use to short periods when necessary to maintain the welfare of newborn piglets or workers, achieving similar productive results as with other systems.
We should continue with the continuous improvement of the sector.
16
We should help ensure that pork is not viewed as a low-quality product, harmful to health and that contains traces of antibiotics because that is not the case. In Spain, meat is produced in compliance with the highest sanitary standards, without growth agents, and with the use of antibiotics only allowed under veterinary prescription and supervision, to treat sick animals, scrupulously complying with the periods of elimination in their body and strict controls in the slaughterhouse. Spain is one of the main pork exporters in the world despite having a higher production cost than other countries, in part, thanks to the international recognition of our products’ quality. In addition, animal protein is the one with the highest biological value and the most efficient from the nutritional point of view, and its consumption is essential to have a healthy and balanced diet without the need to resort to industrially synthesised supplements.
We should help ensure that the sector is not demonised for being incompatible with other activities such as tourism and contribute to the abandonment of the rural world because that is not the case. There does not have to be incompatibilities between pig farming and other activities in the same environment, and the financial and social importance of the sector is a fact, especially in areas with serious depopulation problems, where it plays a vital role in generating quality jobs that help retain young talent and promote female employment. If we want to contribute to the fight against climate change, guarantee the sustainability of our nutrition model and fight against the depopulation of rural areas, the solution is not to stop the modernization of the sector by not allowing the construction of new farms, nor to reduce the herd and depend on the import of food from countries where it is not produced with the efficiency and standards of animal welfare and food safety with which we do it. here. If not support to continue with the continuous improvement of the sector, promoting the modernisation, automation and digitalisation of our farms. We should not make decisions based on emotions but on science. Each person who stops consuming meat has hardly any impact on the combined reduction of water or carbon footprint, however, each of us, the professionals who are part of the sector, with our work and dedication, contribute to doing more every day with less, we are the true defenders of the environment and we already make a crucial impact to guarantee the future and sustainability of our planet. 17
PIGPRODUCTIONIN THE PHILIPPINES RECOVERS ITS PORK PRODUCTION LITTLE BY LITTLE, AFTER ASF
Pork sector represents more than 50% of livestock activity in the Philippines.
Farrowing farm in the Philippines. Photo: Rotecna.
The Philippines has a long tradition of pork production and consumption. Its pork industry is an important business within the country’s agricultural sector, representing 55% of the total livestock industry. Although in 2019 the country’s pork sector suffered the impact of African swine fever (ASF) and significantly reduced its domestic production, in 2022 more than one million tons of pork were produced, initiating a process of recovery of the sector.
Current situation In 2021, the Philippines had a pig tally of 9.87 million, 12.4% less than in the previous year (2020), with 11.27 million. The pig count in both backyard and commercial farms decreased by 8.2% and 21.8%, respectively. This drop in production is one of the consequences of the ASF outbreaks that have affected the country. However, in 2022 the country began a recovery of its pig herd and by the end of the same year, it had just over 10 million heads. Of these, 21% 18
belonged to professional commercial farms, while 79% to small backyard family farms. On the other hand, until 2020, the Philippines produced about 85% of its domestic pork consumption, while the rest was imported. However, the reduction in consumption brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the consequent reduction in imports, and the impact of ASF, which came to the country in 2019, caused a sharp setback in 2020 as far as own production, which would have led to higher imports had it not been for the strict controls imposed by the Philippine government. All this also meant an important change in the structure of pig selfsufficiency in the Philippines, something that has begun to reverse in 2022. Currently, the Philippine pork sector focuses on meeting the fresh meat demands of the market, and only 15% of all production is destined for the processing sector. Imported pork is mainly intended for the processing sector, and not for retail.
Consumption Pork is a very popular food among the Filipino population and represents the main source of protein intake in the country, above chicken and beef. Per capita, pork consumption in the country grew continuously from 2010 to 2019, but as a result of the spread of ASF throughout the country and its consequent impact on the price of pork, consumption fell significantly, standing at approximately 11 kg per inhabitant per year, during 2020 and 2021. However, the recovery of the tally and production started in 2022 was also reflected in consumption, which stood at 15.5 kilos per capita.
appreciate the Spanish control and inspection system. Thus, Spain has established itself as the first meat supplier in the Philippines, surpassing traditional suppliers such as the United States, Canada, France and the Netherlands. In the last five years, Spanish pork exports to the Philippines have grown significantly. Thus, in 2017, 68,202 tons were exported, in 2022, 209,367 tons worth 409.39 million euros were added to this market. In this way, Spanish exports represented 30.42% of the pork imports that the Philippines made during 2022, surpassing other suppliers such as Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, France or the United States.
Imports The Philippine government sustains a protective position regarding the arrival of pork in its country with strong restrictions in the regulation of imports and certain import barriers such as the existence of maximum import quotas. However, this stance was softened in 2019 by the difficult situation regarding meat sourcing caused by ASF and Covid-19. In 2021 the government introduced a system of reduced duties on imports of fresh, frozen and chilled pork. At the moment (May 2023), those reduced taxes remain.
Future With more than 103 million inhabitants, the Philippines has a growing economy, so we are facing a large market with an unquestionable potential for future growth. To face this growth, the Philippine pork sector must face the great challenge of keeping the threat of ASF in line and maintaining the growth of its pork production, as it has been doing during the last year.
In 2022 the Philippines imported 755,470 tonnes of pork and processed pork worth €947.92 million. Philippine imports are mainly based on frozen pork meat (53.83% of total imports by volume), frozen pork offal (34.75%), bacon and lard (9.06%), and canned and prepared pork and cured and cooked sausages (2.36%). On the other hand, since 2013, Spain is accredited for the export of pork and its derivatives to Philippines and the Philippine authorities
