ED'S WELCOME
Did you know? Travel Makes You Smarter. As you take in the sights, smells, and sensations of a new destination, you're doing more than making memories.
If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa. John Hemingway
Elroy van Heerden editor@rovesa.co.za
Living in a country with so many different cultures – a jaw dropping experience for many travellers to South Africa – it is easy to relate to John Hemingway’s quote. Do yourself a favour and travel this beautiful country. We are not just home to the Big 5, we have everything under one roof. In fact, we boast some of the most beautiful wine routes in the world too. The late president Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” These days, many people travel to learn. They want to experience something unfamiliar and spectacular, and leave with new memories, skills or knowledge. Seeing the world is more educational than being in school, not that I am saying school is unimportant, but by being exposed to new places, people and cultures, you'll develop a wider world view.
Taking a vacation can lower the risk of heart disease. After a day or two of being on vacation, studies show that 89% of people feel less stressful. Traveling has also been shown to help people with depression.
The longest continuous wine route on earth is found in South Africa.
Table Mountain in Cape Town is believed to be one of the oldest mountains in the world.
South Africa, its cities, and its citizens win plenty of international awards each year. In 2017, South Africa was voted the 5th Most Beautiful Country in the World, while Cape Town was named the World's Best City to Visit.
In this edition we unpack a variety of places to discover, explore and experience. On another positive note, life is starting to return to what it used to be, despite the fact that we are warned of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Don’t ever stop supporting our local tourism industry. Travel is the ultimate escape to reset your mind and feel free. I would like to thank each and every contributor and advertiser who has been part of our journey, and especially for this edition. Without your continuous support we could not continue to encourage people to travel our beautiful country. While we fast heading for winter, there is no reason to stay indoors. There is so much one can do, like visiting one of our many natural hot water springs, and so much more. And remember to always buckle up and drive safely wherever the road may take you. Stay healthy and happy travelling. Warm wishes!

FOREWORD Ald (Dr) Elna von Schlicht Executive Mayor: Cape Winelands District Municipality
Speaking of wine, the district is not only home to award-winning wines but also many other spirits and beer options, including non-alcoholic or low-alcohol delights. On a more sombre note, the pandemic’s devastating effect on the economy and in particular on the tourism industry has meant that many jobs were lost. The Cape Winelands District Municipality, together with partners in both government and the private sector, is working around the clock to rejuvenate our economy in order to stimulate employment opportunities and development. During the past year, we have invested close to R14 million in an effort to relieve the burden brought about by COVID-19. With our partners we supported the vulnerable communities, SMMEs and the informal sector. We addressed risk reduction in high-risk areas and continued with our social development programmes. And we hosted not one 4 | June 2021
The Cape Winelands District welcomes you Dear reader, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Cape Winelands District. We are open to receive visitors and can accommodate you in a variety of places – from camping to glamping, or ultramodern self-catering pods to five-star luxury. The Cape Winelands offers a thousand things to do… and then some wine. but three campaigns to promote our destinations. Our fire, disaster and health services have remained active throughout the pandemic. These dedicated teams work on the coal face and ensure that our citizens and natural resources are protected and that the environment is safe to visit, live and work in. This foreword would, however, be incomplete if I did not mention some wonderful achievements, despite the pandemic. Wine Capitals of the World bestowed international recognition on La Motte and Delaire Graff for their contribution to the wine and destination tourism industry, and Stellenbosch Wine Routes celebrated their 50th anniversary in April 2021. Through the division of Community Development and Planning Services, the municipality has displayed leadership in many fields such as the upliftment and skills development of
agri-workers and other disciplines, the building of a strong and diverse tourism industry and the establishment of worldrenowned destinations. The diversity of our reach continues to improve the dignity and quality of lives of so many people. We are immensely proud to be part of these successes, which are only possible through excellent relationships and the depth of passion that is felt for our people, visitors and residents. Of course, we have challenges, everyone does, but we can confidently say that it is safe to visit and also invest in the Cape Winelands. We have the places to be, the space you need and the adventure you yearn for. Visit the Cape Winelands – after all, we have one thousand things to do and then ... some wine! We look forward to seeing you in our District.

Innovative Afro-meets-Euro interior with bold use of colour and pattern, custom and quirky furnishings, contemporary local art and design pieces, and a lasercut steel spiral staircase.
“Kunjani!” It’s a warm, informal greeting between friends in the Nguni language of Southern Africa, but at the Stellenbosch wine estate bearing the name, it’s more than a word – it symbolises a way of life. Life for Kunjani’s owners, German Paul Barth and South African Pia Watermeyer, is best lived in good company, enjoying bountiful food and great wine, surrounded by natural beauty and art. At Kunjani, a fresh and youthful addition to the Stellenbosch wine route, they’ve created a destination that warmly welcomes guests to share their passion for ‘le good life’’. Kunjani succeeds in being a destination in the true sense of the word – bold and innovative design that has become a Stellenbosch landmark and reason enough in itself to visit, a contemporary South African art collection, an acclaimed restaurant that invites long relaxed lunches, luxurious private self-catering villas, sweeping vineyard and mountain views from the expansive deck and, not least, wine tasting in the underground cellar. “Two cultures, one passion,” is the motto under their logo of a very South African, friendly fist-bump, expressing their personal story of how this warm-hearted place came about. Winegrowing runs in Paul’s veins, in his memories of growing up amongst his father’s Riesling vines in Germany’s Rheingau region, and although he made his

career in construction, he dreamed of one day owning his own wine farm. Meeting Pia turned that vision away from Europe to the winelands of South Africa. When the two met at a mutual friend’s wedding, the spark was there but the English-German language barrier bedeviled the instant connection. Sharing the universal language that connects people through wine was a good start, but it took Paul to get his friends to write his texts to Pia for him in English to put love into words and win her over. When they found their perfect farm with vineyards in Stellenbosch’s Devon Valley, in the prime red wine

“There are no rules at Kunjani, except three: You must come hungry. You must come thirsty. You must come with a fantastic sense of humour!” says Pia with her trademark infectious laugh.
A fusion of contemporary style and friendly hospitality
Kunjani has become legendary as a place where breakfast turns into lunch, and quick lunches turn into long afternoons of flowing conversation and new friendships, with the bonus of a private villa to escape to for an evening or a weekend in the countryside.
It’s this fusion of contemporary style and friendly hospitality, a love of sharing in the good things in life, where every staff member exudes the same passion, warm welcome and attention to detail as the estate’s hands-on owners, that makes Kunjani a destination that regularly turns visitors into fans who want to linger longer, and who keep coming back.

country road near the Devonvale golf estate, the unmissable charcoal and bright red façade of the Kunjani restaurant and tasting room contrasts dramatically with the green of the vineyards, a distinctive departure from the traditional Cape Dutch architecture found across the winelands. Pia’s vision came to life in the innovative Afro-meets-Euro interior with its bold use of colour and pattern, custom and quirky furnishings, contemporary local art and design pieces, and a striking laser-cut steel spiral staircase leading down to the cellar and tasting venue. Red sliding screens were inspired by geometric patterns painted on West African mud huts, the red Zulu Mama chairs combine modern materials with the Zulu craft of basket-weaving, there’s the iconic South African “Songolo Sofa” – the overall impression is stylish, soulful, a landmark of contemporary African design. This is modern cuisine in a relaxed setting that has put Kunjani at #1 out of more than 200 Stellenbosch restaurants on TripAdvisor and earned the restaurant a place in the EatOut Top500. Awarding winning Shiraz and more Their wines echo Paul and Pia’s style and philosophy, and the ethos behind Kunjani – laid-back and easydrinking, with style and depth, made for good food and conversation, quality, and value. The award-winning Shiraz, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, come from Kunjani’s own vineyards, while Chenin Blanc is made from 38-year-old bush vines on a nearby farm, and Sauvignon Blanc and Stolen Chicken Rosé are sourced from the prime cool-climate Elgin valley. Relaxed and informative wine tastings are presented in the warm and stylish underground wine cellar, which can also be booked for private wine tastings, small events and business meetings. The restaurant hosts larger gatherings with a flexible selection of seating and menu options to cater for the individual requirements of corporate events and special occasions. The benefit of accommodation for up to 12 guests in the four villas makes Kunjani ideal for staying over after events, as well as for group bookings for families and business teams – and just as suitable for romantic couple getaways or a self-indulgent solo stay.

Higher outputs of 150kW and 500Nm from new 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine Improved fuel consumption and engine efficiency Latest-generation multimedia system with larger display screen
LAND CRUISER PRADO
18 | June 2021
www.rovesa.co.za
ADVERTORIAL Toyota's popular Land Cruiser Prado has received a significant upgrade with more power and torque as well as new multimedia technologies.
Power Up
At the heart of the revised range is an additional 30kW of power and 100Nm of torque derived from the switch to the new-generation 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine, that is now mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission (previously five-speed). Prado's overlanding and towing credentials benefit from the higher-performance engine that now delivers a maximum of 150kW@3400rpm and 500Nm over a wider 1600-2800rpm band. The latest generation 2.8 GD-6 engine (as debuted in the updated Hilux) has received a raft of upgrades including a new ball-bearing turbocharger with a larger turbine and impeller, and improved engine rigidity and cooling. Better fuel economy is realised through optimised pistons and piston rings, changes to the cylinder block and head, higher fuelinjection flow rate and the adoption of high-performance materials for the exhaust manifold. A newly-fitted balance shaft helps smooth out engine vibrations, improving NVH performance and contributing to an even higher degree of refinement.
Enhanced Efficiency & Towing
Despite the substantially stronger outputs, fuel consumption improves to 7.9 litres/100km and CO2 emissions are down to 209 g/km. Fuel capacity is 150 litres with an 87-litre main tank and 63-litre sub tank. Maximum braked towing capacity is increased to 3,000kg on 2.8 models.
New Infotainment
A new-generation multimedia system is fitted across the range, which now incorporates a larger 9-inch touchscreen display (previous 8-inch), enhanced voice recognition and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Customers are able to utilise mobile-phone-services such as Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, SoundCloud etc. to enhance their driving experience – while providing enhanced telephony and messaging interfaces ‘on-the-fly’.
Warranty & Maintenance
All Prado models are sold with a 9-services/90 000 km service plan – with 10 000 km service intervals. A 3-year/100 000 km warranty is also provided. Customers can purchase an additional service plan and warranty extensions from their local Toyota dealer – and benefit from the biggest dealer network in the country (over 220).

Phone your home and ask for someone to make sure your driveway is safe and to open and close the gate for you. When returning home after dark, ensure that an outside light is on, or have someone meet you at the gate. Check with your armed response company if they are rendering rendezvous services. If at any time you must open the

gate yourself, make sure there is nobody suspicious around and the road is clear. Stop right in front of your gate. Do not switch off the vehicle, leave the key in the ignition, get out and close the door (not creating temptation). Then open the gate. Drive in and close the gate immediately behind you. If you have small children in the vehicle, take the key with you (this is the only exception). You need the key as a ‘negotiating tool’. The perpetrators want your vehicle, and you want your children. If your children are older, it is advised that they exit the vehicle with you when opening the gate so that you are all separated from the vehicle should an attack occur. Check the rear-view mirror to ensure you are not being followed. When exiting your vehicle, be cautious and aware of surrounding obstructions and shrubbery that may be concealing a hijacker. Never sit in your parked vehicle without being conscious of your surroundings. Sleeping in a stationary vehicle is particularly dangerous. When approaching your driveway, be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons. This is very important as most hijackers approach their victims in home driveways.
When entering your vehicle and while driving, the following should be considered: • •
Have your key ready, but not visible. Inspect the outside and inside of the vehicle before unlocking. Check underneath your vehicle

for items placed under the wheels. Also make sure nobody is hiding on the passenger side before you enter your vehicle. Know your destination and directions to it; and be alert should you get lost. Always drive with your windows closed and doors locked. Make a mental note of any police stations in the vicinity. When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front of your vehicle to make an emergency escape if necessary. When dropping off a passenger, make sure they are safely in their own vehicle before departing. Avoid driving through high crime or unfamiliar areas. Avoid driving late at night or during the early hours of the morning when the roads are quiet. Drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible. If possible, never drive alone. NEVER, EVER pick up hitchhikers or strangers. Never follow routine routes when driving; change on a regular basis.
Parking areas / Remote jamming •
•
•
When parking your vehicle in a parking area or at a shopping mall, make sure your valuables are already placed in the boot. This should not be performed in full view of the public. Lock your vehicle and make sure the doors have locked by listening and checking the door handle, as perpetrators could have jammed your remote signal. Their objective is to steal from the vehicle once you have walked away. Also, upon returning to your June 2021 | 21

•
vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. As soon as you have entered your vehicle, rather lock the vehicle yourself and don’t rely on the vehicle doing it for you. Perpetrators may also jam your remote signal in this scenario, and then walk past your vehicle and open the boot to take your belongings. Most remote controls, including those for motor vehicles, gate and garage automation operate on a frequency of 433MHz. When a remote control button is pressed, it sends a message (command) on the allocated frequency to a receiver (in the vehicle) to perform an action, for example, to lock or unlock the vehicle. At the other end, the receiver is ‘listening’ for a specific message that it can interpret to perform a required action.
Information you should know If your vehicle is hijacked or stolen, report it to the SAPS immediately. Make sure you have the vehicle details: model, colour, vehicle identification and registration numbers available to assist with the recovery of the vehicle. Also inform the SAPS whether the vehicle has a tracking system and if possible, how much fuel is in the vehicle. When forced to drive with a hijacker, be observant without making direct eye contact and try to memorise as many details as possible. colour, complexion and possible scars and tattoos. Observe the build, gender, body movement, clothing and any conversation that may take place. Remember the direction from which they came and fled, as well as the time and place the incident happened. Remember to make mental and physical notes immediately after the incident to ensure accurate and detailed information for the police investigation. If you are taken hostage, it can be helpful to have a survival plan in the back of your mind should such an incident occur. It is difficult not to become paranoid about being taken hostage. However, it is just as easy to become complacent. One very important fact to remember when being hijacked: Should the conclusion of the drama be by way of armed intervention, and escape is not possible, immediately drop to the ground, remain still and obey the orders of the hijacker.
If confronted: • • •

Do not lose your temper, threaten or challenge the hijacker. Do exactly as told by the hijackers! Do not resist, especially if the hijacker has a weapon. Surrender your vehicle and move away. Try to put as much distance between yourself and the hijacker(s) as speedily as possible. Do not reach for your purse or valuables. Leave everything in the vehicle. Always try to remain calm and do not show signs of aggression. Be compliant to all demands set by the perpetrator. Do not make eye contact with

the hijacker. He may perceive this behaviour as a threat and retaliate aggressively. Keep your hands still and visible to the hijacker, to give him assurance of your passive content. Do not speak too fast (if you are able to talk) and do not make sudden movements.

DISCOVER
It’s time to discover your best life in the country By Rene Vosloo, author at BrightRock’s Change Exchange
Moving from Johannesburg back to the small town of Barkly East has made me appreciate the real magic of living in the southern Drakensberg – the people. Like many families in the Karoo and elsewhere in the Platteland, my heritage is rooted in the farming community. My parents spent their school holidays with their cousins on farms, setting the tone for our own childhood experiences. We visited neighbours for tea and sandwiches, often extending our stay for lunch and into the late afternoon. 32 | June 2021
As children we loved meeting friends and inventing games that kept us amused for hours, while the adults
discussed the wool and meat prices, the midday news, the weather, remedies for treating the prevailing pests, and the latest happenings in the district. When we matured into teenagers, we put on our party frocks to dance the night away in a farm-shed far from home, with our parents in attendance. Then as we pursued our careers, got married or travelled abroad, we left the district. The www.rovesa.co.za

Working on ranches in America, some of these young guns are returning, not only with genuine Stetsons, cowboy boots and American dollars, but with different approaches to farming. As a seasoned farmer cautioned my nephew, who has just returned to the farm with plans for going off the grid with solar, equipping the livestock with tracking devices, and changing the layouts of the camps: “These mountains will teach you, my boy.” But the mountains are also attracting a different community. Among them, professionals who don’t have a family connection to the area, but who want to live and work in a different environment. Some families who visited the small Eastern Cape town of Rhodes for holidays have decided to permanently relocate, introducing new skills and experience into our community. We have an IT developer who is helping to build websites for local events, when he is not attending to the ales he is brewing. We have a financial director and his wife who have worked on large corporate social investment programmes, and are now applying their wealth of knowledge to serve the people of the small village.
increasing frequency of droughts and changing market conditions have forced many smaller farmers to sell up and move to the cities. But there is one challenge that perplexes the parents who have been living on the farms for years: how to fathom the idea of children returning to the fold after studying or working abroad. Many young people from the Platteland travel overseas to gain experience and earn foreign
Some come simply to fish the rivers, rather than frequent the restaurants in Sandton. Middelvlei Wines
– A hidden gem in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands “Those who do not honour the past, do not deserve the future.” This Dutch expression encapsulates the history of Middelvlei Wines on the outskirts of Stellenbosch where a 100 years of making fine and awardwinning wines by three generations of Mombergs was celebrated in 2019. Middelvlei’s rich history and proud traditions started in 1919 when two brothers, Tinnie and Niels Momberg, purchased the farm for the handsome price of £3000. A year later the first juice was pressed, mainly for fortified wines. Their two sons, Stiljan (the quiet one) and Jan Bek (the NOT so quiet one), inherited the farm in 1959. The seminal moment in the estate’s history was in 1963 when Stiljan bought his cousin’s half share of the farm to become sole proprietor. The latest generation of Mombergs running Middelvlei, Tinnie and Ben, have blended modern winemaking and viticultural techniques with tried-and-tested methods, and, together have created a potent force on the Cape wine scene. The mature vineyards are kept in prime condition, while new plantings are carefully selected to suit the terroir. The body and backbone contributed by the mature vines are complemented by fresh fruitiness 34 | June 2021
derived from more recent plantings. Winemaking at Middelvlei is focussed on embracing more fruitforward wines with smoother tannins, a process starting in the vineyards and continuing in the cellar. The premium range, called Middelvlei, consists of a free-run Pinotage, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz, a Pinotage Merlot and an unwooded Chardonnay. This range is neatly book-ended by the Momberg, a super-premium blend of the best red wines we have in the cellar that year, all matured in new French and American oak, and Rooster, an easydrinking wine. The Rooster range consists out of a Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Shiraz. Besides making wine Middelvlei Wines is also home to a range of other unforgettable offerings. These include their popular Boerebraai lunches as well as their wine blending experiences. A destination suited to young and old. While the parents are sampling the superb wines on offer, the young ones are kept entertained having fun on the sprawling lawn or feeding the farm animals. Follow Middelvlei Wines on Twitter (@Middelvlei_Wine), Instagram (middelvlei_wine) or Facebook for regular updates or search for the hashtag #drinkMiddelvlei.

Stellenbosch is a place that combines laid-back country lifestyle with world class wine, tourism, and cutting-edge agriculture. This is what we try to capture in the Stellenbosch Reserve wines. Wines with a sense of place, heritage, and pride. The Stellenbosch Reserve wines were made to reflect the Stellenbosch viticultural landscape, focussing on classic Stellenbosch varieties of Chardonnay, Chenin blanc, Cinsault, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Stellenbosch Wine Routes celebrates half-century of leadership and innovation SA’s first wine route to remain collaborative pace-setter in wine tourism The Stellenbosch Wine Routes celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, a milestone that also marks the birth of South African wine tourism. Beyond offering the highest density of exceptional premium wines in South Africa, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes paved the way for the creation of the country’s wine tourism, an industry that contributes R7.2bn to GDP per year.
“The occasion of our 50th comes at a most opportune time,” says Stellenbosch Wine Routes chairman, Mike Ratcliffe. “The wine industry and indeed, the country, is undergoing one of its most challenging seasons and reflecting on historic achievements is important for the inspiration it provides given the work that awaits us.”
routes, with state-of-the-art wine estates, graded hotels and event facilities having been added for guests. More than half of member wineries have incorporated food-related experiences into their winetourism offering. Today, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes comprises a myriad of world-class wine tourism encounters in addition to wine tastings. From wine safaris to award-winning gourmet affairs, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes justifiably earns its reputation of being the biggest visitor attraction outside of Cape Town. Every year, hundreds of thousands of guests traditionally visit the area, which is a staple of trips to the Western Cape – for both local and international guests. In 2019, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes became a founding member of Visit Stellenbosch, the town’s official Destination Marketing Organisation. This joint initiative is unifying Stellenbosch tourism stakeholders under one umbrella with the objective of growing the tourism and experience economy in Stellenbosch for the benefit of all communities.
Since its first step 50 years ago, the footprint of wine tourism has extended to wine-producing regions in five provinces with 23 recorded wine routes. The development of wine tourism in South Africa has also led to the transformation of the rural landscape in these wine EXIT 47

The same year, the organisation became the first Southern Hemisphere wine region to join the Porto Protocol. Here, it committed to accelerating its focus and efforts on good environmental practice principles and executing projects oriented towards local sustainability. “Stellenbosch’s success is due to the unique combination of several critical factors. These include the quality and number of wineries; the beauty of the surrounding landscape, collaboration; and, availability of cultural tourism that augments wine tourism,” says Ratcliffe. The Stellenbosch wine region has received the most wine awards per capita than any other of its kind in South Africa, underscoring a link between quality of wine and successful wine tourism. “As the first and largest wine route in the country, Stellenbosch Wine Routes will continue to lead the way. 3 a member of the Porto Protocol and driving the social agenda,” Ratcliffe says. “Stellenbosch recognises the leadership role it must play on climate change and socio-economic issues too. We are committed as the wine and tourism ecosystem of Stellenbosch to drive environmental protection and social cohesion and foster good principles among all our stakeholders.” On the effects of the pandemic, Ratcliffe says it demonstrated once again how in times of crisis communities pull together. The industry itself has faced seemingly insurmountable crises in the past and risen to meet the challenges every time. Vinpro estimates that more than R2.5bn in revenue was lost between March and July 2020, with most losses incurred at the tasting room. “The impact to profitability, employment and the financial stability of the communities that are dependent on this sector cannot be underestimated either,” says Ratcliffe. Quick off the mark when COVID-19 arrived on our shores, Stellenbosch rallied fervently to support economically vulnerable people living in and around the winelands. Among the initiatives was Stellenbosch Unite, through which last year it fed 690 000 people with 207 000 litres of soup and 36 800 food parcels. This year, it co-ordinated the donation of hundreds of care packages to staff across all roles in the medical sector, including nurses, cleaners, porters, security guards, administrative officers, clinic workers and support staff.
The Stellenbosch Wine Routes, founded by Frans Malan (Simonsig), Spatz Sperling (Delheim) and Neil Joubert (Spier) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021. It is not only the oldest but also the biggest wine route in South Africa.
4 Stellenbosch was also the first destination in sub-Saharan Africa to implement World Travel and Tourism Council-approved stringent health and hygiene safety protocols for the wellbeing of staff and guests. “As a wine route, we continue to put a firm focus on ensuring our wine and tourism eco-system continues to implement these protocols consistently for the safety of our staff and guests,” Ratcliffe says.
SWR Founder members and the Cape Estate Wine Producers Association introduced the Wine of Origin System confirming integrity and regionality of wines.

Top 5 reasons to stay at The Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa
By Nadine Carroll, Living It Up CT
Some of my happiest childhood memories were made in the famous Garden Route town of Knysna. Lazy summer days were spent splashing in the shallow waters, trying to catch lightning-fast fish with a net. Taking a small sailboat out onto the smooth lagoon waters with my cousin, often getting stuck on a sandbank, was all part of the fun. Our humble abode was a ramshackle hut in a forest clearing near the water’s edge. More recently, I had the pleasure of enjoying a luxurious stay at one of the best hotels in Knysna. Once housing a power station built in 1939 and 1940, the heritage site was painstakingly transformed into the unique and quirky 5-star The Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa. Eco-friendly Initiatives We all know that water is one of our most precious resources. Due to severe drought conditions in Knysna and surrounds, The Turbine implements water conservation initiatives with a complete ban on nonessential water usage. The various energy and water-saving measures taken include the use of water shut off devices, rainwater harvesting and water-saving fittings. They have also recycled the entire power station building and its materials and make use of solar panels and heat pumps. The Turbine Spa may be small, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t indulge in some relaxing head-to-toe treatments with their skilled therapists. Offering a tranquil oasis in the heart of the hotel, prepare to get your bliss on with a revitalising pamper session or two.
The Turbine’s two restaurants, The Island Café, and The Gastro Pub, each offers a unique dining experience. Savour delicious a la carte cuisine throughout the day at the retro The Island Café. Your day simply cannot begin without a scrumptious breakfast – I’m quite partial to their superb Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny and steaming cappuccinos. Meals can be served indoors amongst the restored original turbines or outdoors, where you can enjoy pool and canal views from the terrace, perfect for leisurely al fresco lunches and dinners. During the cooler months, well-positioned open fireplaces warm up the spacious interior. The upstairs dining area offers a secluded venue for more intimate dinners. The Island Café has an extensive beverage list featuring a wide range of fabulous local wines, sparkling wines, spirits, beers and imported champagnes. The service was friendly and efficient, and staff members went the extra mile when ordering items that weren’t necessarily on the menu. Despite being a 5-star hotel, the menu was reasonably priced, and in some cases, less than what you would pay in Cape Town. The Gastro Pub is a quirky pub built around the hotel’s fifth turbine. It’s the place to be for a fun time with friends and family while enjoying exquisite lagoon views from the outdoor deck. The laid-back vibe, utterly delicious gourmet finger food menu and possibly THE best gin cocktails will make you want to linger longer. Their signature gin cocktails are fantastic! 40 | June 2021
This well-known Spa features single and double treatment rooms and the extensive Spa Treatment menu offers something for everyone, including body, facial and beauty treatments for women and men. The exotic mosaic tiled Rasul Steam Room and exclusive Spa Massage Pedi Chair are some of the Spa’s distinctive features. Choose from a wide range of indulgent Pamper Packages and Signature Treatments. Joyce had me floating on air after a heavenly massage. She was able to ease the tension in my back, shoulders, and legs almost immediately. I enjoyed it so much that I went back the next day for a blissful facial that left my skin hydrated and glowing. Don’t miss out on enjoying

Wash your hands regularly
Avoid touching your face, mouth or nose
Use a hand sanitizer when you're on the go
Your first practice of hand hygiene should be to always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. A regular hand wash can prevent you from transferring germs and viruses to other people and objects as well as protecting you from them.
It is easier said than done, but it's important to avoid hand-to-face contact as much as possible when you're travelling. According to WHO, the COVID-19 virus can be easily spread through saliva droplets and nose discharge when an infected person sneezes or coughs. When you're in contact with an infected surface and touch your face, nose and mouth afterwards, you'll put yourself at risk of getting the virus or transferring it to other objects.
It can be difficult to search for water on tap when you're on the move. Therefore, it's best to carry a small hand sanitizer in your bag, especially when you're visiting public places and making use of public transport. It is recommended that you use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Remember that washing your hands with soap and water is still preferred if your hands are visibly dirty or after using the bathroom.
REMINDER
DID YOU KNOW? Germs can survive for up to three hours on your hands
TRAVEL HYGIENE
6
Hand hygiene tips
to remember when you’re travelling!
Avoid high contact surfaces in public spaces
Avoid handshakes or any other form of physical contact
Avoid touching surfaces in airport waiting rooms and lounges, on flights, busses and sightseeing spots without regular sanitizing.
It may be strange not to greet someone with a handshake, especially when you meet a new friend while travelling, but the pandemic has definitely changed the way we greet one another. Maintain a one-metre distance from your friend, smile and wave, but keep both hands to yourself.
60 | June 2021
Teach others about these hand hygiene practices whenever possible Always teach your children and the elderly these hygiene tips before going on a family trip. It is best to always practice good hand hygiene, not only during COVID-19.

When the waters cool down sufficiently, the silver sardines swim close to shore, attracting a variety of bigger game fish, dolphins, sharks, whales and overhead seabirds all ready to feast. #TheGreatestShoalonEarch is the planet’s biggest mass migration, and the #KZNSouthCoast has front-row seats to the spectacle. Sardine run updates are shared on the USCT social media platforms listed below.

Beautiful weather The year-round pleasant weather and sunshine found along this coastal #Paradise makes a seaside retreat possible from January to December. In fact, the winter weather in these parts is particularly welcoming, with clear, sunny skies, calm seas and milder temperatures making for ideal beach going conditions. Although the mornings are quiet and calm on the beach from September to December, visitors can enjoy some kitesurfing in the afternoon when the wind picks up somewhat.

Spanish Farm: Fynbos heaven in the heart of the Helderberg
On a clear day, the countertop silhouette of Table Mountain is visible from the high west peak of the Helderberg Mountains on the outskirts of Somerset West, some 50km away. Here, the lavish Spanish Farm Guest Lodge sits nestled on the flanks of the mountain, creating the perfect nook from where to explore the surrounding winelands, beaches and nature reserves... or just relax and soak in the surrounds. By Louzel Lombard Steyn Cape Summer Villas’ Spanish Farm lies right on the edge of the Helderberg Mountain Reserve with its sprawling views over the entire False Bay. It's a well-known sight, optimally enjoyed from beneath a thick, fluffy duvet with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in bed. On a quiet morning, the giant bay windows can be thrown open 66 | June 2021
to let in the Helderberg's natural fynbos gardens... and some other fauna. This was just the case on a visit here in early autumn when a relaxed Springbok came wandering along the private deck of my bedroom. For a group of friends travelling in the first throes of lockdown, the lodge was a
saving grace of peace and tranquillity. The resident springbok – I named him George – was our only other company (or at least that we knew of). Every morning, George and I enjoyed each other’s company, neither disturbed by the others' chewing and sipping. Me, on some homemade rusks and coffee and he, on a scrub of www.rovesa.co.za

succulent grass and water from a garden puddle. Both bedrooms in each of the private villas are located below deck with private gardens while upstairs, an open-plan kitchen and living area overlook a sprawling stoep to one side and secluded private pool to the other. Hummingbirds and dragonflies abound, sipping nectar from the pincushions or bouncing off the surface of the pool, undeterred by swimmers and sunbathers. Thanks to the natural slope of the mountain creating different 'levels' on the property, the natural pools are tucked beneath an upper-level garden where guests can sunbathe in utter privacy – save for the company of the birds and bokkies, like George. As the sun set over False Bay on our first night, we sought shelter from the snippy autumn air around the wooden dining table in the glass-walled dining room. It's the best hang-out spot for friends and family to linger with a bottle of red wine and a hearty dinner, without losing sight of the False Bay lights flickering below in the distance. Apart from the dining room and entertainment spaces with the private pool, each villa also has its own lounge with a wood-burning fireplace, DSTV and a fully-equipped, modern kitchen which makes the laid-back Winelands lifestyle accessible to visitors. Perfect breakaway spot that naturally lends itself to social distancing The 4-hectare estate is an especially perfect breakaway spot that naturally lends itself to social distancing. For those eager to explore as lockdown levels ease up, however, it's a most central hub. www.rovesa.co.za

A short drive down the R44 lies the famous Root 44 Emporium farmers market, which has just been renovated. Stalls with local crafts, delicious food and live music over the weekends is a must. When the ‘Cape Doctor’ is asleep, beaches dotted along the Cape Whale Coast are great for quick swims or a paddle-ski adventure. Lucky paddlers have encountered some of the iconic Southern Right whales up close in the bay. For day drivers, the iconic Clarence Drive on the edge of the False Bay coastline offers a breathtakingly beautiful view from Gordon's Bay all along the Sir Lowry Mountain slopes. Spanish Farm is also a hit with the many outstanding golf courses of the Winelands, including the nearby De Zalze golf course with its sweeping views of the mountains and Blaauwklippen River. For our group, the most strenuous activity of the trip was mixing a couple of G&Ts and hiking up a quaintly clad wooden walkway behind the estate to enjoy that world-renowned sun set from our own private deck. In the midst of a global catastrophe, we could all breathe a sigh of relief and regain perspective on how privileged we are to live so close to nature in South Africa. 68 | June 2021
Nature thrives in this haven on the outskirts of a busy winelands’ town, which is just as well when restaurants and other tourist attractions are forced to close. When they're open, however, it's the centre of the most sought-after eateries in the winelands. It's also an easy 20-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport and a 45-minute drive from Cape Town. The mountain and fynbos landscape provides a cherished space for both rest and adventure – whatever you choose. www.capesummervillas.co.za

EDITOR'S CHOICE - SA FINE WINES
Kaapzicht Kliprug Chenin Blanc 2020 A dry white wine which has a rich, deep, complex nose of bruised yellow fruits, white peach, creamy and plush, showing honeyed pineapples and yellow fruits. Plenty of gravitas, fruit weight, focus and textural complexity.
Florence by Aaldering 2020 white blend Colour: Pale golden straw. Nose: The Sauvignon Blanc adds green guava notes as well as floral petals, whilst the Chardonnay supports this marriage with lemon curd and toasted butter aromas. Toasted hazelnuts and a delightful warm spicy profile add extra depth and complexity.
Food pairing: Best enjoyed with boerewors straight from the barbeque.
Pallet: A rounded crème brulee body is underpinned by a fresh acidity that adds length to the rich finish of this opulent synergy between Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Food pairing: Green vegetables (asparagus, zucchini, fresh peas, artichokes), cheese, especially goat cheese or delicate fish like sole.
Waverley Hills Shiraz/Mourvedre/Viognier 2015
Neethlingshof the Caracal A deep ruby colour with pronounced aromas of blueberries, blackcurrent, toffee apple and a hint of cedar. An elegant, yet full-bodied dry red wine which exhibits flavours of black plum, balckcurrent, sour cherry and liquorish. Well-structured with a long finish and firm tannins. Food pairing: Excellent enjoyed with meat dishes such as beef brisket or kudu carpaccio. Great match with cheese, such as swiss cheese or white cheddar, or vegetable dishes like green bean casserole or ratatouille tart.
The deep ruby centre is complimented with concentrated plum, oak and red spice tones. A bouquet of violets and fresh fruits leaps out of the glass. This wine has a very soft and velvety front palate and fruity, but firm, mid palate with a fresh and long aftertaste. The Shiraz provides this blend with typical red fruit and spicy flavours, with Mourvedre providing berry and fresh herbal aromas. The Viognier compliments the overall aromatic sensation and softness to accompany the wood. Food pairing: Goes well with well marinated meat dishes like duck and fillet steak. Saucy pasta dishes or pork belly will also work well with this blend.
Constantia Glen Three 2017 Colour: Youthful in colour with a dark, deep red core unwinding into a bright and lively garnet rim. Nose: Forthcoming nose with expressive red and black fruit flavours. Beyond these initial ripe fruit flavours, there is complex collection of savoury dried-herb flavours intermingled with lingering notes of white pepper, blackcurrant and cedar.
Viljoensdrift Pinot Noir Rosé The beautiful ruby red, salmon colour and abundant tiny bubbles are the results of nearly four years bottle fermentation on its lees. Fragrances of ripe strawberries and cherries dominate the palate. Food pairing: Best served with seared salmon salad.
Palate: The dark fruit and distinct savoury notes on the nose follow effortlessly onto that first sip where elegant, velvety tannins grip the palate in a vibrant intensity of flavour. This incredible richness and concentration of fine-grain tannins is further echoed by an earthy minerality and the wine’s inherent freshness brings about a long, well-defined finish. This opulent, full-bodied wine possesses old world authenticity with its delicate herbal fynbos notes that reign in the powerful fruit flavours. Food pairing: Seared Springbok medallions with a smoked parsnip puree and blackberry infused jus. Slow roasted shoulder of lamb with roasted vegetables and tomato jam, on a bed of buttered polenta. Salted lamb chops or duck-breast grilled to crispy perfection over vine coals.
Delaire Graff Botmaskop 2018 Rich aromas of crisp and spice with intense liquorice and blackberry flavours on the palate and fine, lingering tannins. Food pairing: Think meat. Of course, you can pair this Bordeaux style wine with an array of other spectacular foods, but the ideology behind this pairing is that the high bitterness and tannin structure of the wine will be balanced out by the salt and fat in red meats. Complimented by spice and cassis, the Botmaskop pairs exceptionally well with savoury flavours of black pepper and umami-rich brown spices such as cumin.

Kaaimansgat Blanc De Blancs 2016
Haskell Pillars 2016
Pale gold. Aromas of mandarin peel and the distinct citrus floral sent of verbena develop gradually into classic whitefruited chardonnay elegance. Cool, pure Pink Lady apples evolve on the palate edged with a flinty finish, as if cut by a steel knife. The precise, taut nature of the wine expresses the character of the vintage – a steely framework to support its full, soft mousse along a grain of toast with hints of oatmeal in the background.
Notes of violets, black tea, liquorice, black current and white pepper all layered and evolve as the wine opens. The palate has a grip yet velvety with coated fruit tannins balancing well with the hints of wood char on the taste. Food pairing: Well served with grilled or roast beef served rare or with a pepper sauce.
Food pairing: Great with shellfish, oysters dressed with burnt butter, whole trout grilled on cedar-plank, pork cheeks with caramelized apples, grass-fed T-bone accompanied with foraged mushrooms, Delewood Hugenot souffle, whole cauliflower roasted in terracotta and Cap Classique poached pears with whipped clotted cream.
Lanzerac Sauvignon Blanc 2020 Generous aromas of green fruit like Granny Smith apples interplay with white fruits such as Asian pears and white peaches in a perfect fruit-acid balance. It introduces a fresh lemongrass mouthfeel with subtle minerality rounded off by a soft creaminess in the long finish due to extended lees contact.
Manley Unschuld Rosé 2020 On the nose, one picks up scents of fresh roses, young peach, and soft plum characteristics, with a floral perfume-like undertone. On the pallet there is a hint of subtle fresh red fruits, providing an elegant mouthfeel and lingering fruity but somewhat zesty after taste. This rosé is a careful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which was aged in French oak barrels for three months on 30% primary lees, contributing to a neat creaminess on the palate. Food pairing: summer salads, picnic style foods, appetizers, prawns, crayfish, seared salmon, white-rinded soft cheeses, grilled chicken, and fresh summer fruits and charcuterie, such as melon and prosciutto.
Food pairing: Enjoy with spicy cucumber and lime granite oysters or goat’s cheese tartlets with caramelised onions.
Stellenbosch Hills Muscat De Hambourg 2020 Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2017 Sweet spice, freshly picked red plums, black cherries and cola are supported by aromatic toasted coconut and milk chocolate from the youthful oak. Food pairing: Delicious matched with grilled meat off the braai.
Sunset coloured, almost explosively fragrant with candy floss, boiled sweets, rose petal and violet bouquet. Elegant, long and beautifully balanced, great length and complexity. Food pairing: Heavenly on crushed ice, over vanilla ice cream and strawberries or at room temperature in winter.
Aaldering Estate Pinotage 2018 Colour: Deep red with a dark purple rim in colour. Nose: Primary flavours of deep purple plums, prunes, cherry notes are balanced with forest floor and savoury notes. Dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans and warm spice notes add to the complexity. Pallet: The dark purple fruit follows through from the nose in this full-bodied wine, a complex and deep core enamours the taste buds whilst the tight tannins and balanced acidity adds length and longevity to this beautiful example of Pinotage. Food pairing: Enjoy this wine with venison, ribeye steak or lamb; preferably Karoo!

Food pairing: Excellent served with sushi, seafood paella, chicken piccatta, grilled peach with goat cheese salad, lemon pepper asparagus or some pecorino cheese.

Bloemendal Suider Terras 2016
The wine has a brilliant rich garnet and raspberry red colour with a nose of cigar box, liquorice, pomegranate, and spice. The nose is upfront, fresh and plentiful, leading to a firm layered palate structure with early tones, fresh red fruit, cherry, violet and cigar box.
The revival of a legend, Suider Terras has near mythical status as a source of unique and age-worthy Sauvignon Blanc. The 2016 barrel fermented edition will develop seamlessly, with cellaring up to 10 years.
Food pairing: Goes well served with roast or grilled lamb or game meat.
Food pairing: A Sauvignon Blanc would typically be paired with White meats such as chicken and seafood. Seeing as this wine is more complex, it would be even better to pair it with cheese, especially goats cheese. This wine can also be paired with oysters and green vegetables, such as asparagus.
Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Colour: Dark, rich colour
Ken Forrester the FMS 2019 (Forrester Meinert Chenin) The pinnacle of what we consider to be the finest expression of the grapes of this varietal – an icon chenin, a challenge to the world. Rich, layered with dried apricot, vanilla and honey. Food pairing: Enjoy with spiced dishes, even mild seafood, shellfish or curries. Great with exotic Eastern spiced foods.

Silky smooth palate with a delicious fruit sweetness and beautiful ripe aromas of blue and black berries wound tightly into elegantly constructed tannins. A winter retreat at
De Hoop Collection
By Di Brown, freelance travel writer
De Hoop in summer is a dry landscape of earthy tones but winter compensates for the cold temperatures with vivid colours, new growth and dramatic clouds. The fields of canola approaching the reserve scream in bold yellow. They demand that you stop and admire their show.

REVIEW
As you leave the yellow canola behind and crest the hill for the first view of the vast expanse of the De Hoop Reserve, stop for a moment and consider the huge variety of wildlife that calls this place home. The stone and whitewashed buildings you see clustered around the vlei is just a fraction of this reserve. A complete bird, mammal and marine guide/check list is available at De Hoop. Forget about the Big 5, you will not see them at De Hoop This means you can safely walk, cycle, hike and explore without the fear of being eaten, mauled or chased and allows you to have a fully immersive experience in nature. When the Big Five are around it is the norm to stop looking for anything else, but the bush has got so much more to offer when you allow your senses to fully focus on your surroundings.
effort and a walk or a drive you might get lucky and see a Caracal, African Wildcat, Large Spotted Genet or even a Leopard. Don’t forget to look down for the little guys like the Small Grey Mongoose, Cape Hare, Porcupine and various gerbils, shrews and mice. For birders, a guided bird walk in the early morning can be arranged or you can go out alone and keep an eye out for the Black Oyster Catcher, easy to spot down at Koppie Alleen beach, Damara and Caspian Terns, Blue Crane, Stanley’s Bustard or any of the 260 bird species on the reserve. We heard one of the six species of owl, but were unable to spot it.
The vulture experience The Cape Vulture is an endangered species but thanks to De Hoop Collection, Cape Nature Conservation and the local farmers working together, the last remaining colony in the Western Cape is growing and now numbers some 200 birds. Forget the cartoon picture in your mind of vultures. They are usually depicted as scruffy gangster-like birds with scrawny necks hanging out on cliffs looking for trouble. They are the victims of really bad press, and De Hoop Collection’s guides and Cape Nature now offers an extraordinary experience to see these birds in full flight.
Around the accommodation area you will encounter Cape Mountain Zebra, Bontebok, Kudu, Eland and Chacma Baboons, all delightful to observe and photograph. You can probably view them from your room. With a bit of

REVIEW I stayed with our marine guide as he told us about the ancient two to five million year old fossilized dunes, rock formations and pools and told us stories about the urchins, anemones and sea plants that are found in abundance here. At one point we were standing on a huge bed of mussels that he estimates to be about 20 years old.
We started out with a drive through the reserve to the Potberg. From here we got down into nature as we walked along a narrow path through the fynbos, which was just starting to show off its spring colours. Arriving at a little clearing, shaded by trees, we eyed the slightly daunting incline we were about to tackle. Sun bleached rocks provide footholds and stepping stones as we make our way up the Potberg Mountain. Regular stops are made by some of us to admire the views and catch our breath. Mostly to catch our breath, but admiring the view or taking a photo is a good excuse for us to give to those powering up ahead like mountain goats on speed. The wooden viewing deck looks across to the cliffs where the vultures nest and the gorge where they catch the thermals and soar out over the valley below. With a wingspan of over two metres, these birds look exquisite in flight. They are graceful, powerful and fast. They are also extremely difficult to photograph, I failed horribly. We stayed on the deck for well over an hour, watching, pointing and delighting at these beautiful birds. We counted over 42 of them in the sky, and by staring or using the binoculars we were able to spot others in the cracks and crags on the cliff opposite us. 84 | June 2021
Marine interpretative walk
After a while I slipped away to the other beach as I just had to sit and admire what I call the boiling cauldron. A short clamber over some rocks leads to a natural bowl where the waves roll in, swirl, and crash up in a boiling fury. The power of the sea is so evident here and I find it totally compelling. We completed our beach adventure with brunch on the dunes and were entertained by the whales in the waves right below us.
This activity is dictated by the tides and we were up and ready to go at 7am to make the most of low tide at Koppie Alleen beach. It’s about a 20km drive on a bouncy dirt road from the De Hoop Collection village.
If you are looking for a break from the city, De Hoop is a comfortable three-hour drive from Cape Town and is accessed either via Swellendam if travelling along the N2, or via Bredasdorp if you take the R316 at Caledon.
The beaches here take my breath away every single time I visit. There is so much going on it would take days of exploring to take it all in.
De Hoop Collection is a member of Cape Country Routes. South African specials are available on their website www.dehoopcollection.com
The walk down is pleasant and obviously much quicker. Back at the clearing we were treated to a lovely picnic lunch of extreme deliciousness.

WEDDING PLANNING
4 Tips for planning the perfect
pandemic wedding
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in widespread changes, including wedding cancellations and postponements. In fact, a study revealed that 96% of couples were not willing to cancel their weddings in 2020, but rather move them to a later date in 2021. Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts, says that as a result of 2020 postponements, 2021 will most likely become the year of the wedding boom.
“The truth is, weddings have changed, and we are unlikely to see a 100+ guest wedding for many more months to come. Planning a wedding under normal circumstances is tough, so I truly sympathise with couples who are navigating the uncertainties that have come with having to plan a 86 | June 2021
wedding during a pandemic,” he says. Lamont adds that while we must all ensure that we’re doing our part to limit the spread of COVID-19, couples shouldn’t rule out their fairytale wedding altogether just yet. “As the numbers start to lesson,
the lockdown measures will loosen, and a dream wedding with the opportunity to make lasting, magical memories will be back on the cards,” he says. He also offers four tips to couples looking to plan the perfect pandemic wedding: www.rovesa.co.za
Special: 1 Follow the health and safety protocols:
Masks, sanitiser, and social distancing are now a daily feature in our lives, and your wedding should be no different. Not only must you ensure that your guests follow the health and safety protocols, but you also need to ensure that your selected venue is compliant with COVID-19 regulations too! First Group, for example, has transformed every resort and hotel into a COVID-safe zone that boasts disinfectant tunnels to sanitise the whole body at the entrance.
10% Discount on all wedding packages, booked/enquired via Rove SA. Use code in email subject: Rove SA Wedding Enquiry (valid for invoices/quote made in June, July & August 2021)
2 Keep your numbers small and embrace tech: Under Level 1 of the lockdown, social
gatherings are now limited to 100 people or less for indoor venues, and 250 people or less for outdoor venues. If the venue is too small to hold the prescribed number of persons observing social distancing, then not more than 50 % of the capacity of the venue may be used. Hotels, lodges. bed and breakfasts. timeshare facilities, resorts, and guest houses are allowed full capacity of the available rooms for accommodation. The plus side is that you will not only save on cost, but you will also have the opportunity to share your special day with those closest to you (yes, that means no distant cousins or dodgy uncles!) And, if you embrace technology and get a hot-shot videographer, the rest of your invited guests can still join your special day online ensuring that no one misses out (not even Uncle Kenneth and Cousin Zethu)!
3 Reduce touchpoints: Limiting the spread of COVID-19 means you must reduce the number of touchpoints on your wedding day, and this includes décor. Less is more when it comes to pandemic wedding décor, so instead of spending a fortune on table centrepieces and draping, rather choose a venue with breath-taking views to provide a beautiful, natural backdrop for your day. 4 Turn your wedding day to wedding weekend: Less people at your wedding means
that you are likely to save on cost. Use the extra cash to make a wedding weekend away with those you love the most. You can spend quality time with those who mean the world to you, making magical, lasting memories, not just for a couple of hours but for an entire weekend! “Life has changed, but that doesn’t mean we stop living or stop loving or stop planning. It simply means that we adapt accordingly,” Lamont concludes.

Augrabies Falls National Park Augrabies Falls National Park is located at the Augrabies Falls, about 120km west of Upington. It was established in 1966. The Augrabies Falls National Park covers an area of 820km² and stretches along the Orange River. The area is very arid. The waterfall is about 60 metres high and is awe-inspiring when the river is in flood. The gorge below the falls averages about 240m deep and runs for 18km. The gorge provides an impressive example of erosion into a granitic basement. The original Khoikhoi people named the waterfall 'Ankoerebis', meaning the 'place of big noises'. www.experiencenortherncape.com

Augrabies Falls… the hidden gem
The mighty Orange River approaches Augrabies Falls National Park and divides into numerous channels in this 51 113 hectares of one of South African National Parks’ hidden gems. The river cascade down an abyss of approximately 90 metres high, with a 56 metre freefall. The indigenous Khoi people named this area “the place of great noise” or “Aukoerebis” from which the park derives its name. Although the falls, which boast the largest water volume in South Africa, is the primary reason for the proclamation of the Augrabies Falls National Park, it offers a sanctuary to far more than just the waterfalls. Plant life, invertebrates, reptiles, fish, birds, and mammals can be found all over the park. The park hosts no less than 49 mammal species, of which the most intriguing is probably the Klipspringer, often seen leaping nimbly from rock to rock on specially adapted hooves. Visitors can enjoy various types of accommodation; one large camp comprised of chalets and cottages that sleep a total of 120,

and 50 camp sites. There are three swimming pools for the exclusive use of the residents and another separate one for day visitors. There is also a well-stocked shop, a petrol station and a restaurant with an a-lacarte menu. For activities, you can take a walk down the beautifully maintained boardwalk to experience the sight and sound of water cascading over rocks, as well as various viewpoints of the amazing waterfall. Take a scenic drive to the beautiful Moon Rock which consist of a massive granite exfoliation dome or ‘whaleback’ which is one the prominent landmarks in the park, as well as observing the flora and fauna of the park.
There are also 4x4 trails and two other viewpoints, Oranjekom and Ararat, from which you can observe the massive gorge area. The 36km Klipspringer Trail and 8.5km Dassie Trail, or the shorter 2km Gorge Trail, offer the adventurous an opportunity to explore the park on foot. Mountain bikes are also allowed in the park, though cyclists are requested to remain on the official roads. South African National Parks are currently also offering an amazing opportunity for Stokvel and travel groups to explore certain parks at discounted rates. Find out more at www.sanparks.org

TRAVEL PLANNING
Useful hints when planning your
road trip
There are certain things to keep in mind and check for yourself before hitting the road. The most important thing is to check the safety of your vehicle.
Examine the following: • • • • • • •
roadworthiness tyres brakes windscreen wipers all lights and indicators water and oil
Always carry the following spares in your boot (these could save time and money in the event of a breakdown): • fan belt • radiator hose • spare tyre • spare ignition key • wheel pump • jack • warning triangle • The second important thing is to make sure your property is taken care of. 92 | June 2021
Note: Always inform your local security company and police station that you will be away from home for a certain period of time. During our winter months we experience extremely bad weather conditions in certain areas, so please be vigilant, rest when needed, ensure the safety of your passengers and those of other road users and maintaining a two second following distance at all times. However, in foggy or rainy conditions and when driving at night, increase your following distance.
DON’T… • • • •
DO… •
DON’T FORGET… • • •
your driver’s license (this is required by legislation) important documentation you might need along the road chronic medication
Buckle up and drive safe. And remember, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal in South Africa.
leave pets alone leave unnecessary appliances switched on leave taps open Do not use back roads even if they cut travelling distance. Busy roads allow for much easier assistance when in need.
•
In case you have someone looking after your property while you are travelling, ensure that you have laid down the rules of the house and made notes of daily important tasks in and around the house. When travelling an unfamiliar route, ensure that you have planned your journey properly. Pack a route map in case your GPS doesn’t pick up signal in certain areas.

Of course, he wasn’t talking about taking a holiday a year after the outbreak of a global pandemic, but the quote informs the unprecedented opportunity South African travellers now have to enjoy some of the country’s premium private game reserves at a fraction of the pre-COVID-19 prices.
private game reserves’ conservation efforts
One of these is Shamwari Private Game Reserve, an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, which is offering some exceptional specials. It has re-opened two if its seven lodges – the recently refurbished Long Lee Manor and the exclusive Sarili Private Lodge.
Some 2 500 years ago Sun Tzu, the Chinese military strategist and philosopher wrote: “In the midst of chaos there is also opportunity.”
Long Lee Manor is R4 150 per person per night sharing. The offer includes a five-star suite, two game drives a day, guided bush walks, a tour of the Born Free Sanctuary and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Visits can be arranged to the Children’s Adventure Centre, which offers ziplines, climbing walls, a mini-football pitch, trampolines and stacks of other supervised activity. Families or groups of friends are able to book the entire five-bedroomed Sarili Private Lodge for R38 000 a night. This includes a bespoke itinerary and a private staff, including a personal chef. The minimum stay is two nights.
Helping to conserve a vanishing way of life Joe Cloete, CEO at Shamwari, says that for the foreseeable future the domestic market will be critical to the future of private game reserves and the work they do to protect and conserve indigenous fauna and flora. He explains that private game reserves have no other source of revenue than what guests spend when they visit. Every dollar, pound and rand spent contributes to a business model that absorbs the cost of wildlife conservation, protection and rehabilitation and ecological restoration.
www.rovesa.co.za
“By staying at private game reserves guests are participating in projects that conserve South Africa’s natural heritage. Many of these have been outstandingly successful,” says Cloete. With growing demands on state coffers, a declining tax revenue base and the need to prioritise, government will simply not be able to afford to support the extent and scale of conservation efforts in South Africa without this private-sector support.
Shamwari is a good example. Over the past 25 years the conservation team has arrested the impact of human activity and returned 25 000 hectares to the rich diversity for which the area was once renowned.

REFIND FRESHNESS
Wake up and smell the benefits of coffee –
Could this warm, comforting drink actually be good for you? By Catherine Clark, The Harvest Table
For most of us, coffee is an essential part of the day. It helps us through our hectic morning routines, warms us as we share precious moments with friends and when needed, gives us an extra kick of energy. But is there more to this much-loved beverage? For years, coffee has had a bad rap, but there is finally some good news for coffee connoisseurs. “Studies are now showing that you could be getting more from your favourite beverage than you thought. Moderate coffee drinking (not more than four cups a day) is now thought to actually have a variety of health benefits as it is packed with healthy substances that are safeguarding your body from several chronic diseases. Here are the top four reasons why coffee may actually be one of the most beneficial beverages on the planet:
1. Increases energy: The active ingredient in coffee that gives ‘vooma’ is caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to temporarily improve mood, reaction time, memory,
100 | June 2021
vigilance and general brain function – in other words, it boosts your energy levels and gets you moving… fast! It takes around 45 minutes for your body to absorb caffeine and the effects peak for anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. Caffeine is absorbed in the gut and dissolved in the body’s water and fat molecules and is even able to cross into the brain, but fibre or food in the gut can slow the effects of the caffeine peak. So, if you are looking for a quick caffeine fix, having your coffee on an empty stomach is the way to go.
2. Burns fat: Can coffee really support weight loss? The simple answer is yes! Caffeine, partly due to its stimulant effect on the central nervous system, both raises metabolism by up to 11% and causes the body to send signals to the fat cells to break down excess fat. Of course, releasing fatty acids into your blood will not help you lose fat unless you are burning more calories than you consume, so if you are watching your weight, have your morning fix but opt for coffee without milk or sugar.
3. Source of Essential Nutrients: Coffee is loaded with
nutrients and is in fact one of the best sources of antioxidants in the Western diet, even outranking many fruits and vegetables. These high levels of antioxidants help to reduce internal inflammation and have been shown to be effective in guarding against conditions such as colon cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and even Type 2 diabetes.
4. Boost physical performance: Firing up with a coffee before a workout has also been shown to improve physical performance. Caffeine improves endurance levels and resistance to fatigue and studies indicate that athletes had a more positive exercise experience when they exercised after a cup of coffee!
With so many benefits, it’s hard not to be a coffee-lover! For those who want to add even more nutrition to their favourite caffeine fix, add a collagen creamer to your morning cuppa instead of dairy. The collagen will provide your body with even more health benefits and will help to further reduce any inflammation and leaky gut issues, ease joint pain, improve liver health and increase metabolism. The combination of coffee and collagen not only tastes great but packs a punch in keeping you in optimal health.

CELEBRATE
4 things not to do when hosting your
Christmas in July party
(but why you should do it anyway) By YUPPIECHEF
One of my absolute favourite things in life is learning. No matter whether you flopped the cake recipe or invited more into your life than you could handle, there is always richness in retrospection – appreciating what did and didn’t work. So in the name of learning, I’m going to share our Christmas in July party learnings with you – what we did wrong and what maybe you could do better. Best case scenario – you’re inspired to host your own imperfect, but nonetheless fun event. Second best case scenario – you get to know us all just a little bit better. Don’t forget to check your weather app This one may sound obvious, but with South Africa’s wonderful climes nothing is ever obvious. Remember how your gran always made you pack an anorak on route to a December holiday sunset picnic? And you would think she wasn’t playing with a full deck of cards but then out of nowhere the wind would pick up and you’d be the sucker shivering as the sun went down? Well, our winter months like to keep us on our toes too. We arranged our in-house Christmas in July party around everything from agendas, team timetables and general human behaviour, yet completely neglected to consult Windguru. Turns out, while we served Glühwein, our team was overheating in their bauble-adorned knits and scarves in the balmy 24-degree sunshine.
Don’t be too strict with the dress code 102 | June 2021
Of course at an ideal ugly sweater party, everyone is wearing a readily available hideously kitsch knit dug up from the depths of their wardrobe. But because the southern hemispheres don’t actually experience the collision of winter wardrobe with Christmas iconography, the general brand of ugly sweaters, perhaps thankfully, haven’t really penetrated our particular fashion scene. Nevertheless, labelling the dress code as ‘come in your ugliest sweater', might alienate those who don’t have one or intimidate those who aren’t creative and able to adapt something from the reams of inspiration on Pinterest. While we did enjoy a hilarious spectacle of fairy lights pinned in the form of Christmas trees, bauble earrings and reindeer antlers cleverly tacked to brown tops from those who did attend, our learning from this one is this. Rather create a ‘kitsch up your costume’ station and offer to
help guests get into the vibe with an assortment of props.
Don’t deck the halls with bells of holly While the wardrobe will always lean towards the more cliché side of Christmas decor, that doesn’t mean your event decor has to too. In fact, it’s rather nice to keep it more winter focused. We decided to adorn our kitchen with mini hanging wreaths made from penny gum branches and our tables with fynbos cuttings from a fellow Yuppie’s overgrown garden. We are still in South Africa, so it’s nice to embrace the flora authentic to our winter months. It is a hybrid event after all.
Don’t over deliver or under cater We would have loved nothing more than to cook up a feast consisting of our recipe inspiration this month, but feeding a gathering of ± 50 people with such fare can become rather
www.rovesa.co.za
CELEBRATE
costly. And since it’s a light post-work event we could have ended up with mounds of uneaten food. If you’re only hosting an intimate, sit-down crowd, then prepare dishes like authentic Karoo lamb pie, veggie lasagne with winter squash and nutmeg, butternut custard tart with cream, pork skewers with Asian sauce, and spice infused craft mulled cider. (For these delicious recipes, visit www.yuppiechef.com/spatula/) Since it’s not about the food, but more about the people coming together to celebrate the best of winter, opt for simpler snacks like cinnamon dusted caramel popcorn, Glühwein (we suggest making one batch spicier and dryer and the other rather sweeter and fruiter to suit differing tastes), Bruschetta slices, a marshmallow hot chocolate station, ginger biscuits and cinnamon sugar roasted nuts.
Do it anyway The best learning in all of this is no matter how grand the picture in your head or how many things could likely go awry – the end result is always worth it. Why? Because you wanted to do something nice for the people who matter and those people never see perfection, they see the wonderful sentiment behind it. And it will always leave you feeling a little bit braver, a little better connected to those who matter and a bit more prepared for the next time round. Enjoy your Christmas in July parties, people. Celebrations of any sort are always a wonderful gratitude to life. We would love to share some of your pics of your parties throughout the rest of the month on our social media feeds so please tag us if you do host an event.

Cook with wine This wine is beautifully layered with aromas of mulberry, violets and subtle pepper and anise. The mid-palate is balanced with concentrated fruit flavours and smooth, dense tannins.
Seaward grapes are selected from South Africa’s top coastal areas, growing in a narrow band close to the cold Atlantic ocean and the temperate waters of False Bay.

Seaward Chardonnay and roasted pork open sandwiches with rocket, horseradish cream and pickled red onion Although these are the perfect day-after solution for when you’ve made a large roast with leftovers to spare, you can also roast a smaller piece of pork for the sole purpose of making these sandwiches. Serve at room temperature at any time of day, any season, any occasion - they’re always a winner (knife and fork optional!). We love pairing them with an easy-going white like the Seaward Chardonnay.
For the roast pork: Ingredients
For the horseradish cream: Ingredients

• 1kg boneless pork roast (smoked, if you prefer) • 15-30ml olive oil • salt and pepper 1. Heat the oven to 180℃. 2. Place the pork in an oiled roasting tray or pan (fat side up) 3. Brush with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. 4. Roast for 1.5 hours at 180℃. 5. Remove from the oven, cover with foil, and leave to cool and rest. 6. Slice as thinly as you can.
• 250ml thick sour cream • 30ml (2 tablespoons) prepared horseradish • 10-15ml Dijon mustard

• 125ml (½ cup) white wine vinegar • 125ml (½ cup) water at room temperature • 15ml (1 tablespoon) sugar • 7.5ml (½ tablespoon) salt • 5ml (1 teaspoon) whole peppercorns • 1ml (¼ teaspoon) crushed dried chilli flakes • 2.5ml (½ teaspoon) mustard seeds • 1 red onion, peeled and finely sliced into half-moons or rounds
Method
1. In a medium-size jug, mix the vinegar, water, sugar, salt, peppercorns, chilli flakes and mustard seeds. 2. Stir until the salt and sugar have dissolved. 3. Pack the sliced onions tightly into a clean jar, then top with the pickling liquid. 4. Cover with a lid, then let it stand for at least an hour before serving or refrigerate and use within a week.
For the sandwiches: Ingredients • 8 slices dense rye bread, buttered • a bunch of rocket leaves • horseradish cream (see above) • roasted pork slices (see above) • pickled red onion (see above)

SKINCARE
Protect your skin under the harmful effects of the
African sun
South African winters are milder when compared to other countries, allowing us to continue being active outside – jogging along our beautiful beaches, hiking, playing sports, or just having fun.
Fortunately, there are products to keep your skin looking healthy while you enjoy the South African sun, also helping you to maintain a radiant look into your old age. Many of us seem to think that in cooler weather we don’t have to worry about sun damage and often forget to apply sun protection. Just because the sun isn’t making you sweat doesn’t mean it can’t harm your skin! What many people don’t know is that in winter, UV rays (the ones that burn your skin), decrease – they don't!
The ultimate winter sun care guide •
Avoid being in the sun between 10am and 3pm as much as possible.
•
Moisturize daily.
•
Use makeup with SPF.
•
Use an SPF sun protection lotion to keep your skin protected and moisturised throughout the day.
•
Don't leave your lips out in the cold without lip balm.
•
Use higher SPF at higher elevations.
•
Pay careful attention to the easy-to-miss areas.
Note: Even in winter it is important to wear a hat to protect your scalp and ears from sunburn.

THOCLOR GF2 SPRAY Take HOCl along on all of life’s adventures
GF2 is technology that uses your body’s own immune molecule to treat the majority of skin conditions or problematic skin (restore), fight imflammageing (rejuvinate), and also RETAIN good skin quality in youthful healthy skin. HOCl is produced inside your body’s white blood cells to to mitigate and combat inflammation associated with short-term and chronic skin conditions ,such as acne, sunburn, environmentally induced inflammation (including pollution, smoking, alcohol consumption, coffee, bad diet, stress, etc), hyperpigmentation, and ageing. HOCl targets these underlying problems, not disrupting the integrity of the skin’s micro biome. And it is easy to incorporate to any existing skin routine. With this minimalistic and scientific new approach to skin care, men also wanted a “no frills no fuss” skin solution, so we recently launched GF2 for HIM.
