This is your building. You live here. So we want you to create something for that space that’s yours. This is your chance to become part of the fabric of the building and have a legacy even after you’ve left!

To design a piece of semi permanent artwork to live in a white wall space in the Graphic Design department.

Consider the limitations of the dimensions of the space.

Friendly, informal, informative.

Lettering Research

Italian Research

Looking into existing lettering, I had a look around for designs that incorporated nature and typography that flowed together continuously.

I had a look into italian renaissance water fountains and decor to gain more of an understanding into the aesthetics of the renaissance period.

Jessica Hische was a huge inspiration in regards to lettering as her style is influential on both me and Sarah, and she has created countless amounts of swirly and wild typography.

Also had a look at the structure of grapevines so that our lettering was more informed.

Lettering Development Collaborating with Sarah was exciting as we both share a passion for lettering and wacky concepts. As our ideas started to flow, so did the development of the lettering style. We wanted to make sure that the words “Welcome To Graphic Design looked like grapevines intertwining around one another and coming from the main

tree trunk at the bottom of the page, so that the design looked like one big grapevine cascading up the wall. A large amount of sketches were produced to get more of an idea of the kind of look we were going for. We then took the sketches into illustrator and vectorised them to produce the final design.

As Sarah has a lot more experience with Adobe software than I do, she worked on the more complex areas of the design like creating shadows and illustrations of water fountains, whilst I was left to fiddle around with ornaments such as leaves, vines, grapes and mosaics.

A Trip Back Into The Renaissance Although we weren’t picked for the Peter & Paul competition pitch, we decided to carry on with the brief to finish off our concept and see how it could have looked on the wall. The final design is extremely ornate and over the top, but I think that it brings a sense of playfullness to such a boring white wall.

I think that incorporating the water fountain into the design helped to bring the wall to life and is also very humorous, as the actual fountain situated there looks entirely different to a Renaissance water fountain.
