Brief 08 — Wilderness

The Brief
Considerations
Tone of Voice
Timescale
Before Wilderness, festivals didn’t offer forests or feasts. No one knew of a festival where you woke early to swim, or stayed late to learn.
To rebrand the festival to give it more of a modern edge, whilst attracting more females to the festival.
Consider how the logo will affect the gender that is attracted to the festival and how it can reflect on the idea of being out in the wild.
Informative, friendly, promotional, feminine, wild.
3-4 weeks
Consider using design styles that are natural and wild or resemble British wildlife in one way or another.

Research Researching thoroughly into the festival itself and looking at images of the festival in previous years helped to inform design decisions, as I had more of an idea as to whether my designs would actually suit their existing identity and feel. I had a look into different methods of showing off nature at it’s finest for
the posters and came across making mandalas out of plants. This heavily influenced my design choices later on and lead me to experiment with making my own mandalas. As the festival wants to be known as wild and free, I looked at existing logotypes that were hand rendered or made use of a scripted typeface.
From looking at the festival over the years, I found that they like to use bright colours for bunting, tipis, stalls, etc. Colours pulled from wildlife would help to make the brand look natural.

Logo Development I created a large variety of logos for this brief as there were so many different ways of representing wildlife in a logo. The logo was developed and a few ideas were sent over to James to discuss how to take things further. Unfortunately, James didn’t have enough time to work on this brief due to other commitments, but this meant

Idea Development
Branding Ephemera Development that developing the logo became a lot easier as being a female, I could relate to the target audience better than James could. This meant that the development progressed quite considerably and efficiently.
After trying to make different mandala patterns out of flowers that I had collected in Oxfordshire (local to the festival), I had much more of an idea as to how I wanted to take the brief further and thought that mandalas woked extremely well! The flowers within the mandala could easily be cropped in Photoshop and
used on more minimal backgrounds for posters, tickets, etc. A variety of different typefaces were considered, as I wanted to find something that was playful yet professional and not over the top.

Wilderness Logo The final logo that I created was made using a script typeface and lots of floral illustrations. The feminine colours used for the flowers were chosen partly to attract the female audience, but also because they stood out against and complimented the green leaves.

Promotional Poster A promotional poster was created using a flower mandala as the main imagery, with a simple layout and sans serif typeface. The pink colour for the background was chosen as it compliments the colours of the flowers and also stands out against white or cream walls.
The typeface chosen works really well with the brand as it’s playful yet simple so it doesn’t distract from the information being read. I also think that it compliments the rest of the design due to it’s simplicity. The promotional poster will be used at bus stops, billboards, etc and will also be handed out in a smaller size.

Lineup Poster A lineup poster was created using parts of the flower mandala that I made in my garden in Oxfordshire. All of the information on the lineup poster was taken from the current lineup poster for this year’s festival. The lineup poster will be plastered around in the public area, similar to
the promotional poster, but will also be handed out during the festival to give festival goers more of an idea of the weekend ahead.

Tickets The tickets follow a very similar design style to the posters but in a condensed ticket form. I thought that the tickets should be designed in a way that makes the customer want to keep hold of theirs, as a form of memorabilia from the passed event.
The tickets will be printed on textured, pastel pink stock.

Wristbands I decided that the wristbands should be very minimal and only reflect the branding by the use of colour, typeface and logo applied. I felt as though the flowers didn’t work on a threaded wristband. I often find that less is more and the flowers made the band seem overly cluttered.
Using the logo on the clip helps to bring the branding back into the design of the wristband and also adds a nice little addition to a usually very boring black clip.

VIP Lanyard The VIP lanyard design followed the same aesthetic structure as the tickets, but the design has been reconsidered to suit the portrait layout and VIP theme. VIP cards will come on pastel pink lanyards to tie into the branding colours and will be printed onto textured pink stock like the tickets.
