Intern is a bi annual independent print publication concerned with internships in the creative industries.
Working in a group, come up with an original independent magazine and how it will be launched on Kickstarter.
Consider the concept for the magazine and what will make it stand out from any other magazine sold in stores.
Informative, educational and persuasive.

Consider the concept for the Kickstarter campaign - you will need to grab the audience’s attention and persuade them to sponsor the magazine launch.

Independent Magazine Research
Kickstarter Research
Having a look at existing independent magazines was a good starting point as it gave us more of an idea of the competition and what is already available to the public.
Looking at existing Kickstarter campaigns was useful as none of the group had ever set up a campaign on Kickstarter so didn’t know what we should include.
This also helped with design decisions as you gained more of an informed knowledge as to how to lay out the cover of a magazine.
Looking for inspiration on Youtube in regards to how we would shoot our campaign video also proved beneficial as we developed our ideas.

The Concept
Brief 05 — Intern Magazine
The Cover
We wanted the concept of our independent magazine to be different to others currently being sold. We decided to focus on British context, as this will relate to the UK audience and will vary from a lot of other magazines.
Such professions will include: taxi drivers, strippers, bouncers, pub landlords, toilet attendants, etc. We wanted to keep the professions basic and focus on those that weren’t often talked about in the media.
The magazine will be published bimonthly and issues will include stories from different professions.
The magazine is essentially looking at life through a different perspective.
Designed by Joe, we wanted to make sure that the cover carried the magazine’s ethos of ‘not judging a book by it’s cover’ or ‘not judging a person by their profession’. Each issue would have a secondary cover, with just the name of the magazine on it and a hole through the middle. A face would be displayed
through this hole and when the page is turned, the profession of the issue is revealed. This alternative cover design gives the magazine a tacticle quality and encourages the publication to be picked up and interacted with.

The Presentation
In regards to the campaign, we felt as though the video would be short and punchy and reveal small clippets of different interviews taken from the magazine context.
As a group we presented our ideas to Alec Dudson and our peers.
A sample of how this video would look can be found on my blog.
Although our idea was interesting and clever, it was definitely noticed that we spent more time coming up with a concept and cover design than working on the Kickstarter campaign concept.
