The Ladies Association monthly Happy Hours will continue through the summer with some location changes while the main Clubhouse is closed for renovations. The ROCCLA happy hour is the last Wednesday of every month with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and member sign beverages. Our annual ROCCLA Cocktails & Croquet Happy Hour on April 26th was an ideal time to celebrate Charlotte Cooper, the first female individual Olympic gold medalist. The ladies enjoyed refreshing gin gimlets and croquet on the lawn prior to sauntering up to the Palm Grille where they snacked on appetizers of chicken Cornish pastries; cucumber & cream cheese finger sandwiches; onion, goat cheese and tomato quiche; and strawberries & cream.

ROCCLA’s patriotic themed May 31st Happy Hour’s woman of recognition was General Lori J. Robinson, USAF (Ret). Gen. Robinson was the first woman to command a unified combatant command. All women of the military were honored.

These themed Happy Hours recognizing women who have made a difference continue to be an interesting extra. So much, in fact, that our June Happy Hour honoring Mildred Loving was a wedding reception theme in alignment with Loving Day. Julie Gray organized an interesting Preservation Houston Historic Woodland Heights walking tour on Monday, April 17th for a group of 20 followed by lunch at Lola Diner on Yale. Be sure to check your weekly emails and the Royal Oaks Country Club app for information and sign up as plans are finalized for future field trips.

HCC Fashionable Lunch on April 13th included a tour of HCC’s extensive fashion archives followed by a multicourse luncheon at HCC’s culinary school. Thank you, Suzette Brimmer, for making this tour possible.

The Royal Bookies Book Club meets at 4:00 pm each month just prior to the ROCCLA Happy Hour. “These Precious Days: Essays” by Ann Patchett was discussed at the May 31st gathering. Kate Quinn’s “The Diamond Eye” was the book of choice for June 28th; and Barbara Kingsolver’s “Demon Copperhead” for August 30th. Note, there won’t be a July meeting. All are welcome to join in anytime. If you’ve read a book you’d like to recommend to the group, Karen Shewbart (kshewbart@comcast.net) and Ellie Beeckman (beeckmae@sbcglobal.net) would love to hear from you.

Lunch Bunch, organized by Jan Parker and Angie Gooch, keeps us trying new foods with new friends as well as old on the third Monday of each month. We dined at Eunice on Buffalo Speedway on May 15th and Hopdoddy Burger Bar on June 19th. MDK Noodles is scheduled for July 17th followed by dessert close by; August 21st will be at Rosalie Italian Soul located inside C. Baldwin Hotel on Dallas; and Sixty Vines on September 18th, which will include shopping in Rice Village for those who wish to stay. Aileen Hansen’s vision of the Royal Recipe Ladies has not only succeeded but continues to flourish. Each month one of the ladies opens her home while the attendees prepare a monthly themed meal to share, along with recipes and stories. Diana Waguespack hosted a Jamaican luncheon on April 20th. The Ladies wore their bright colors and Caribbean attire while sharing wonderful Jamaican cuisine, stories of adventures, and Jamaican food and recipes. On May 18th Roc’C Semmelbeck hosted a Greek themed Royal Recipe Ladies luncheon. Music, flowers, a lovely table setting and Greek Lemonade welcomed the ladies with their tastefully prepared food. To be more inclusive, when the group resumes in September they’ll alternate the third Tuesday or third Thursday of the month, as schedules permit. Kindel Burton (kindelvc@gmail) and Trisha Maley (trishmaley@yahoo.com), our mother/daughter MahJongg co-chairs are making sure the tiles are shuffling in the Ladies Locker Room on Thursday afternoons beginning at 1:00 pm. If you’d like to learn how to play, please reach out to Kindel or Trisha for the next group lesson.

Do you like to play Bridge? Tuesday’s feature Casual Bridge at 10:00 am and Advanced Bridge occurs on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Friday of each month. Contact Nancy Richard (nancywrichard@gmail.com) for Casual Bridge and Jane Williams (janerwms@yahoo. com) about Friday Bridge.

Hop on board to play Mexican Train Dominos on the first Thursday of each month at 10:00 am. Many of the ladies stay for lunch. If you love dominos, come join in. If you’ve never played dominos, come join in. It’s easy to learn and the group is warm and welcoming to beginners.
