11. COMBINING EFFECTS WITH OBJECTS In the previous lesson, we were introduced to the drawing of simple objects like a cube. In this chapter we shall continue our journey of learning to draw Objects along with their characteristic tactile and visual textures. In the third and final lesson of this unit we will learn about perspective drawing.

11.0 Objectives After studying this lesson you will be able to:•

Understand and draw textures of the objects.

11.1 Introduction The environment around us abounds in textures. When you were studying nature, you saw and observed many textures in leaves, flowers, trees, etc. Objects too have many different tactile and visual textures. The texture of the object is according to the material it is made of (wood, cane, metal, glass, etc.), the treatment and finish of the material (like smoothened, Fig. 11.1; polished, Fig. 11.2; painted, Fig. 11.3 etc.), and the function and assembly of the product (like joining, Fig. 11. 4; weaving, Fig. 11.5; stitching, Fig. 11.6 etc.).

11.2 Depicting Textures Some textures will be drawn in linework along with outline contours of the object (Fig. 11.7), while others will be represented through use of hatching, shading and highlights (Fig. 11.8). The textures that are produced due to function and assembly of the object will be part of the linework of the drawing. The heavy or light outlines will be influenced by the light and shade of the object. The treatment and finish of the object will be represented through shades and highlights as per the play of light and shadow.

The material of the object basically shows up as a visual texture, where a combination of linework and shading of the details is used. The representation will be much easier and greatly enhanced by the use of base colour as certain materials are largely associated with known colours. The colour of the object also lends itself to the visual texture and finish of the object. In drawing the object as we learnt earlier while drawing nature, the character of the subject must come through. Here the details like materials (and also combination of materials); assembly, finish, shape and form define the character of the Object. It is viewing point or angle and the subsequent perspective that shows the front and /or rear, inside and/or outside, top or bottom of the object as are visible through our eyes and are perceived by us.

i) Draw a cane basket (tokri), plastic vegetable basket placed on a table cloth (if it’s a tokri place it on the ground) with translucent fabric (like net or muslin) placed inside it. This assignment will give an understanding of drapes and weave structure of a basket (Fig. 11.9). •

A basket is an opaque object and the fabric is translucent.

The weave structure of the basket gives you an idea of the function and assembly of the object, and hence will be represented with the drawing outlines and linework of the details of the weave.

The subject as is on view provides an experience in contrast of perceiving and representing an opaque object and a translucent object.

In drawing the basket, first draw the outline form lightly. Some part of the basket is covered with a translucent fabric, through which may be you can glimpse the basket and /or the layers of the fabric.

The fabric fall/drape within the basket also takes on a shape or form, somewhat free flowing. Draw this and also the layers as may be visible using light linework.

Then go over the outline of the basket with the understanding of material and form of the cane and also fill in the linework representing strands of the cane into the body of the object (except the portion that is covered by fabric).

Draw / fill in the details of basket or fabric layers as may be visible through it.

Add shading and highlights to the translucent fabric.

Work with hatching and crosshatching along with shading to bring out the shadows and depth of the basket.

The drawing must reflect your understanding of the two different materials, their combination in the composition on view, the assembly (as in the weave structure) of the object and the drape or fall of the fabric within the basket.

11.4 Summing up This lesson gives a clear understanding that once the texture of the object and the background or foreground effects are combined with in the object drawing it appears more natural and original.
