JOSEF BAYER COMPOSER

Born in Vienna on March 6 of 1852, Josef Bayer was an Austrian composer and the director of the Austrian Court Ballet from 1883 until his death. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory, and was a violinist in the Wiener Hofoper (the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra), 1870-1898. Though he created over twenty one-act ballets including Die Braut von Korea, he is remembered for Die Puppenfee (“The Fairy Doll”) of 1888. It was the definitive Austrian court ballet, and remains in the repertory of the Vienna State Opera. Bayer was also friends with the Viennese waltz composer Johann Strauss II and it was Bayer who completed the unfinished Strauss Cinderella ballet, Aschenbroedel in 1900, Strauss having died in 1899 leaving a completed draft of the work lacking its orchestration. Earlier, Bayer commemorated Strauss’ golden anniversary as conductor and composer with Bayer’s specially composed ballet “Rund um Wien” in 1894, which was performed at the Vienna State Opera. Bayer also composed several operettas including Der Chevalier von San Marco(1882), Mister Menelaus (1896), Fräulein Hexe (1898), Der Polizeichef (1904),Spitzbub & Cie (1907), and Das Damenduell (1907). FAIRY DOLL COMPOSER: JOSEF BAYER CHOREOGRAPHER: VLADIMIR ISSAEV Libretto Vladimir Issaev based on the ballet of Josef Bayer

First Act

The owner of a Doll store shows his customers all the beautiful dolls he sells in his shop. He has distinctive dolls from different countries including a doll that blows kisses, a doll from Austria, dolls from India, a doll that talks and many Harlequins. The young assistant helps the owner taking care of the dolls. The boy also enjoys dancing with the dolls. The seller tries to flirt with the lady customers just to engage them to buy any of the dolls in the store, but they don’t seem fascinated by any of the dolls. Finally, he brings the most beautiful doll of all: The Fairy Doll. His customers just fall in love with the stunning doll. At the end of the day, the owner of the store closes the shop, and the young and distracted assistant is left alone, locked inside the store.

Second Act As the night falls, the tired young boy cannot believe his eyes! The Fairy Doll comes to life, and with her magic, she brings all the toys of the store to life. Away from the eye of their owner, the French doll celebrates with joy. The tin soldier flirts with dozens of beautiful dolls; the Bunny plays her drum, and Harlequins accompany her with their cymbals; the Spanish Doll dances and jumps around the store while the Chinese dolls illuminate the place with their beautiful and exotic lamps. Two happy and colorful dolls amuse the other dolls dancing to a vibrant rhythm, and the characters of a Music Box come to life. The Japanese doll elegantly dances with her enigmatic fan, and Russian dolls twirl around the place. Two Pierrots are in love with Fairy Doll and try to catch a kiss from her. Foolishly fighting for a kiss, they stumble and make everyone laugh. Everyone dances to the enchantment of beautiful Fairy Doll until dawn. The owner opens the store again and finds his young assistant sleeping next to one of the dolls.
