TRIBUTE TO DIAGHILEV Today we are giving tribute to one of the most important figures in the international ballet world. Mr. Sergei Diaghilev. He was not a dancer, nor a choreographer, however, we believe he is responsible for the most part, for the development of the art of ballet in Europe and America. Sergei Diaghilev was born on March 31, 1872, in Perm, Russia. Diaghilev, went on to study law at the University of St. Petersburg, where he graduated. However, he pursued music and became an art critic. He showcased his own musical compositions before focusing on writing about art. He had a very an innovative, unconventional style and in 1899, Diaghilev launched the magazine Mir Isskustva ("World of Art"). Diaghilev later became involved with the Maryinsky Theatre, handling editorial projects for the imperial venue as well as overseeing performances. Earning a reputation as a connoisseur of great works, he took a Russian portraiture exhibit over to Paris in 1907. There he also put together concerts featuring composers from his homeland and ran a production of Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov. In 1909, Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes, a company that changed the face of the performance world forever. With choreography primarily by dancer Michel Fokine and stage designs by longtime friend and artist Leon Bakst, The Ballet Russes showcased several ballets that took audiences by storm at the company's Châtelet Theatre debut. The company had the greatest dancers of the moment such as dance stars like Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova and Ida Rubenstein. For 20 years The Ballet Russes, became international touring Europe, South America and the U.S. where they debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1916. The company became known for movements not confined to traditional classicism, defying the convention that female dancers should always be delicate and giving male dancers more of a spotlight. Diaghilev had a vision that various forms of art could come together onstage, and as such recruited a range of iconic composers to become involved in his productions, including Claude Debussy, Erik Satie and Manuel da Falla, along with visual artists like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. One of his most famous collaborations came in the form of Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, with Diaghilev staging some of the composer’s early works. These works included Firebird, Petrouchka and 1913's The Rite of Spring, whose primal, urgent aesthetics caused Parisian audiences to come undone. Diaghilev’s success depended primarily on his ability to identify and bring together the most creative artists of his day. He called upon Léon Bakst, Natalia Goncharova, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Giorgio de Chirico, among others, to create dynamic set designs and exquisitely decorated costumes that shared a unified aesthetic. They in turn brought the most important artistic developments of the early 20th century—including futurism, cubism, and surrealism—to the ballet stage. Diaghilev also commissioned ballet scores from other innovative composers such as Sergei Prokofiev, and Erik Satie, and featured dancers noted for their technical brio, making the company a breeding ground for musical and choreographic innovation: Mikhail Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Léonide Massine, Bronislava Nijinska, and George Balanchine all dramatically expanded the vocabulary of movement. The troupe’s productions—notably the infamous Rite of Spring, now celebrating its 100th anniversary—instigated a revolution in dance. Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida in its own way, gives tribute to this great man, who changed the world of dance. Issaev's choreographic works are tailor-made for this vibrant company that is looking forward to offer South Florida audiences not only an alternative to enjoy a different and unique repertoire, but it is also exposing our community to the history of ballet.

IGOR STRAVINSKY COMPOSER Igor Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia, on June 17, 1882. He was raised in St. Petersburg by his father, a bass singer named Fyodor, and his mother Anna, a talented pianist. Not wanting Stravinsky to follow in their footsteps, they persuaded him to study law after he graduated secondary school. Once enrolled in university, Stravinsky was invited to apprentice under Vladimir RimskyKorsakov, whose father was a celebrated composer. When Stravinsky's own father died in 1902, he decided to pursue a career as a composer. In 1909 the founder of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev, invited Stravinsky to orchestrate a couple of Chopin works for the ballet Les Sylphides. The job was a catalyst for Stravinsky's commission of the ballet Firebird. A collaboration with choreographer Michel Fokine, the ballet turned Stravinsky into a household name. His fame was reinforced with a 1911 production of Petrouchka, and the Paris premiere of Rite of Spring in 1913. Although he frequently traveled to Paris for work, Russia was still his home at the time. When WWI started, Stravinsky was forced to leave Russia for Switzerland. Two of his best known works from his Swiss period are Fox, composed between 1915 and 1916, and Wedding, which he started in 1914 but didn't finish until he had moved to France. Stravinsky lived in France from 1920 to 1939. During that time, his most notable works included a comic opera, Mavra (1942), an opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex (1927) and the "white" ballet Apollo (1928). In 1939, he moved to the United States. Two years after his arrival in the United States, Stravinsky was arrested during a performance in Boston for rearranging the national anthem. Despite the setback, Stravinsky went on to have a prolific and successful career in the States, which expanded to include Hollywood movie soundtracks. After a period of decline in his health, Stravinsky died at his Manhattan apartment, on April 6, 1971. Over the course of his career, he wrote more than 100 compositions, including ballets, symphonies, operas, concertos and sonatas.

PROGRAM PETROUCHKA

Choreography: Vladimir Issaev - Music: Igor Stravinsky Costume Designer: Jorge Gallardo Design & Programing by Jim Rood - DMDS7UDIOS / Animation by Miguel Cordero - DMDS7UDIOS Scenery: Igor and Elena Bondarenko World Premiere: Miami 2006 The story takes place at a Russian fair in 1830. Gypsies and dancing girls entertain the crowd. Drums announce the appearance of the Old Charlatan, who charms the captivated audience introducing the puppet figures of Petrouchka, the Ballerina and the Moor. The Old Charlatan casts a magic spell with his flute. The puppets come to life, leap from their little stage, and perform a vigorous dance among the astounded carnival-goers. The second scene, after the performance, is set in Petrouchka's room. Petrouchka leads a sad "life" behind the show curtains. Although Petrouchka is a puppet, he feels human emotions. He is in love with the beautiful Ballerina. The Ballerina enters the room. Petrouchka tries to profess his love, but the Ballerina rejects his pathetic advances hurting Petrouchka's feelings. In the third scene, the Moor, who leads a much more comfortable "life" than Petrouchka, plays with a coconut. The Charlatan places the Ballerina in the Moor's room. The Ballerina is attracted to the Moor's handsome appearance. She plays a saucy tune and begins to dance with the Moor. Petrouchka breaks free from his cell. Petrouchka attacks the Moor, but soon realizes he is too small and weak. The Moor defeats Petrouchka. Petrouchka runs for his life, with the Moor chasing him, and escapes from the room. In the fourth scene, during the carnival, a series of characters dance with joy. Gypsies bring a dancing bear, followed in turn by the crowd. As the amusement reaches its peak, noise is heard from the puppet-theater. The Ballerina suddenly runs across the scene, followed by Petrouchka and the Moor in hot pursuit. The crowd is horrified when the Moor catches up with Petrouchka and strikes him. The Charlatan seeks to restore calm by picking up shaking the dummy, to remind everyone that Petrouchka is but a puppet. As night falls and the crowd disperses as it begins to snow. Petrouchka's ghost appears on the roof of the little theater. The Charlatan regrets giving the puppets human emotions causing one to destroy the other and sadly returns to his puppet theatre.
