EXPLORING ST. AUGUSTINE

K

America’s oldest city offers a coastal Florida flair with history, culture, attractions and distractions galore.

nown for its Spanish colonial architecture as well as Atlantic Ocean beaches, St. Augustine’s distinct historical character makes it an ideal tourist destination. This is prominent from the building and structures seen all around and the associated historic markings or signboards. It isn’t uncommon to see groups of people standing around taking in a piece of history as they walk by stores and courtyards. While there are hotel chains in the area, staying in a local bed and breakfast is highly recommended. You could possibly be spending time in a construction with some backstory to it and your hosts can guide you on what to do in the area. The St. Francis Inn is the oldest inn in the city and has history that dates back to the 1700s. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and has a definite old world charm that you have to experience to believe. St. Augustine as a city was the oldest continuously occupied European established settlement in the continental United States and still serves as the headquarters for the Florida National Guard. The Castillo de San Marcos, Lighthouse, Flagler College, Lightner Museum, Cathedral Basilica and County Jail are local attractions and all played an important part in the city’s long history. Take advantage of the pedestrian friendly vibes here and indulge in some local history and culture, especially in the historic district where most monuments and museums are located. If you prefer a different mode of transport then tasting tours in an

old fashion horse-drawn carriage could be more your cup of tea. Of course, the ocean is always calling and a water tour with St. Augustine Eco-Tours is a great option to sight local marine life such as dolphins, birds, manatees, jellyfish, and crabs. Kayaking and sailing excursions are a preferred leisure sport. For dining options, head to Colonial Quarter’s La Taverna del Caballo or Hot Shot Bakery, where Chef Sherry, the creator of Datil B Good hot sauce, offers chocolate covered peppers to visitors for a place on the wall of f(l)ame in her restaurant. Next door is Claude’s Chocolates where you can head after for chocolates in all flavors crafted by hand in small quantities using the purest ingredients. The store is a favorite among locals and enjoys a loyal clientele no matter the season. The Ice Plant is a restaurant and bar with history weaved into its building and offerings. The restaurant returns to the craft of ice harvesting by freezing purified water in large blocks so you will find ice cubes in all shapes and sizes in your drink. The industrial structure reminiscent of an ice plant is a sure crowd puller. Another local spot with a historic slant is the St. Augustine Distillery Company, which has a free tour for ages 21 and up. The time stamp entrance card is very cool as is their menu, tours and tastings. No matter your itinerary, you will find the quaint city will charm you plenty and there is something for everyone to enjoy as you relax by the coast and take in all that St. Augustine has to offer.

The Inaugural Public Art Challenge generated significant activity across the four regions, according to a national impact study, including $13 million catalyzed for local economies and 10 million views. 245 partners helped implement the projects including businesses, nonprofits, government agencies and community organizations, and 820 people were employed through full-time and part-time positions. 1,300 volunteers contributed their time and talent to the projects, and 490 programs and activities like tours, workshops and lectures were held. At least three winners will be chosen in 2018 to execute their projects over a maximum of 24 months. Bloomberg Philanthropies grants will cover project-related expenditures including development, execution and marketing, but will not fund 100 percent of project costs. The application for the 2018 Public Art Challenge, as well as more information on criteria, deadlines and process, can be found online. Bloomberg Philanthropies works in over 120 countries around the world to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. The organization focuses on five key areas for creating lasting change: Arts, Education, Environment, Government Innovation, and Public Health. Bloomberg Philanthropies encompasses all of Michael R. Bloomberg’s charitable activities, including his foundation and his personal giving. In 2017, Bloomberg Philanthropies distributed $702 million.

Through a collaborative effort, the cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy, NY illuminated vacant buildings across the New York Capital Region to mimic human breath and elevate the issues of vacancy and urban revitalization. Artist Adam Frelin, architect Barbara Nelson, the mayors of the three cities, local land banks, and more than 75 community and private sector partners came together to bring the “Breathing Lights” installation to life. This project included a series of related public programming for residents, prospective buyers and investors, and policymakers.

The City of Gary, IN transformed an underutilized downtown building into a cultural hub that showcases visual and culinary arts. “ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen,” conceived by artist Theaster Gates and the City’s Mayor, is a public space that aims to catalyze a cultural district, promote urban revitalization, and generate opportunities for employment in the restaurant industry. 31

There are trails all around the area for a good hike or run path but heading into the canyons with a Desert Adventures Red Jeep San Andreas Fault Eco Tour provides a different experience. You will find local parks spread around the city and annual events hosted include Armenian, Scottish and Greek festivals. With mountain ranges sighted from pretty much anywhere in the city, air pollution is minimal here and there is a booming agriculture industry. Dates are high in production and you can find local menus offering everything from date cake to date ice cream, date drinks to milkshakes, cookies, candy and more.
