Hello &Welcome Spring is here and so is the third edition of Traveler and Tourist magazine, landing straight in your inbox and available for you to download and read at your convenience, on any of your devices, at any time. In this March/April issue, we explore a few destination vacations near and far, depending on where in the world you are located. Sevierville in Tennessee, Denver in Colorado and La Romana in the Dominican Republic are some of the feature spotlights. This month’s Design District looks at a downtown Los Angeles property with stunning interiors, and the Travel Diary brings you floral inspiration galore for your travel plans to bloom full force ahead. Locally, the Nowruz Iranian New Year celebrations were held in Los Angeles and you can read about that in the next few pages. The city is also home to the first human upgrade center from Bulletproof Labs – we have the scoop on that too. As usual, find reading inspiration in our Shelf Esteem column and a few more travel-related products that might be useful for you in On Our Radar. MAY 1-31 International Flower Festival in Sikkim, India Sikkim has become the most famous tourist attraction because of its beautiful hill station lying in the lower Himalayas. The International Flower Festival is an annual event that is held in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The flower festival will be held in May, in the premises of the Governor’s residence. Many species of orchids, gladioli, cacti, roses, trees, ferns, alpine plants, creepers, climbers, will be displayed items during the show.

AUGUST 1-5 RHS Garden Hyde Hall Flower Show in U.K. Due to popular demand, the annual flower show has now been extended to five days, with more opportunities to enjoy all that this floral extravaganza has to offer. The show offers an all-encompassing day out with specialist nurseries, gardening sundries, expert advice and demonstrations, as well as the chance to explore the garden in full bloom. GREAT ESCAPES: SEVIERVILLE AND THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

id you know Sevierville was the hometown of singer and songwriter Dolly Parton? While the actress and author did her bit to put the area on the map, this Tennessee city has its own hits to entice. Whether a fun family escape or a solo side trip enroute to another destination, there’s plenty to experience here over a few days.

Adults and kids alike will enjoy the Rainforest Adventures – a zoo with more than 100 species of animals, reptiles and birds. While outward appearances might be misleading, this is a pretty large area to cover and some of the species here are truly unique including degu, genet, agouti, chinchilla, tamarin and serval.

If you prefer having your feet on the ground though, the hikes around the area help enjoy local sights while getting some activity in. The Smoky Mountains National Park is where you will find Mt. Le Conte – one of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountains. There is an inn at the top but you will have to hike up the last 5 miles to reach it. This area has six eco zones and eight forest types, is the salamander capital of the world with seven unique species here, and contains 2,000 miles of streams. You will also find about 20,000 different species of mushrooms as you walk around. The visitor center at the park provides a wealth of information and guides that can direct your trail visit as well.

To keep the high spirits going, stay at the Wilderness at the Smokies, the year-round waterpark vacation located in Sevierville. Wilderness is home to the Wild Water Dome, Tennessee's Largest Indoor Waterpark, which features a see-through roof that will weatherproof your vacation and give you the opportunity to tan inside all year long. In a bowl, mix drained and cut pieces of mackerel, tomatoes, and olives. Shred basil leaves by hand and add. Drain pasta al dente and rinse with cold water. Add to the mix. Toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and serve at room

History Colorado Center opened in 2012 in the city’s Golden Triangle Museum District. It is a hub for learning and entertainment as also a place to shop and dine. It is dedicated to the history of the state, with many permanent and traveling exhibits, and opportunities aplenty for hands-on learning for adults and kids alike. As part of the Colorado Stories exhibit, highlights include a ski jump simulator and a short video on loop depicting the struggles faced by internees at the Granada War Relocation Center, an internment camp in Southeastern Colorado used to house Japanese-Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A walk-through exhibit area shows the cramped conditions in the internees' quarters. 17

ornamental gardens, water gardens, and more. Watch for changing sculpture collections around the area and interesting facts on different species. You could easily spend a few hours here but make it leisurely so you have time to spare to enjoy the garden in its entirety. This is a good getaway for some peace and quiet from the crowds at the other sightseeing spots.

For shopping, dining and other entertainment, try 16th Street Mall. This is a mile-long pedestrian promenade in the heart of downtown. Take a stroll along as you walk past shops, restaurants and other local and international brand name businesses. The Coyote Ugly Bar is located here in the Denver Pavilions as is the Hard Rock Café. The free mall bus is a great way to get around or you can also try the pedicabs which are a big part of the local scene.

The Colorado State Capitol is located in Denver - it is one of the prominent features in the city’s skyline, courtesy its golden dome. It also serves as a museum to the state’s history and you can find free tours by volunteers here or seasonal exhibits as well. A picturesque location and one you might recognize easily, especially given how regal the building looks from the outside. The gardens here are pretty too and it isn’t uncommon to find people walking around taking pictures for special occasions here. If you have the time, Denver Mint is located near here as is the Firefighters Museum.

For a fun tour and tasting, head to Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, a local distillery, to see their brew house, bottling room and more. They are a fun bunch and make the whole experience enjoyable. Then sit back and sip on their creations in the lounge space. Coors Brewery in Golden – About a half hour to hour away from Denver downtown is the Coors Brewery where you can enjoy free tours and tastings at the world’s largest single site brewery. The tour is

self-guided so you can do it at your own pace â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you basically walk through the entire manufacturing process and then enjoy samples in the lounge area. The local businesses in Golden are worth a visit after.

If there is one dinner experience you must experience, consider The Fort in Morrison, an award-winning restaurant in a frontier themed replica fort, serving wild game, steak and other regional exotic American specialties. The Tesoro Cultural Center is also located here and you can book a onehour tour of the fort with them to learn more about the history of the venue, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Depending on traffic and time of day, you can also do a trip to Boulder, which is about a half hour to an hour away from Denver. Definitely visit the Dushanbe Teahouse, which is a favorite with locals and visitors. The ornate landmark was shipped piece by piece from Tajikistan and built creekside here. Boulder and Tajikistan are sister cities so the building stands as a symbol of cultural diversity, global cooperation, and international friendship in the community. You can also visit the Farmers Market when available here as well as Pearl Street Mall.

CELEBRATING NOWRUZ THE IRANIAN NEW YEAR

For the 10th year in a row, Farhang Foundation organized the largest celebration of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, this time at UCLA. The event, free and open to the public, gives guests the opportunity to explore Iranian culture, one of the oldest in the world, while also embracing the first day of spring—that universal time of renewal and rebirth. Celebrated on the vernal equinox in Iran, Afghanistan, Albania, the U.S., India, Tajikistan, and Turkey, the New Year, called Nowruz (new day), is welcomed with vibrant displays of culture by more than 75 million people around the world. The day’s festivities in Los Angeles included musical acts, children’s arts and crafts, a colorful Iranian spring walk with participants in national costumes, a traditional Iranian Haft Sin display, Iranian dance, and more. The Djanbazian Dance Company delighted audiences with a series of Iranian dances incorporating both traditional and modern themes. The Daneshvar Children's Ensemble lead by Parisa Daneshvar is part of the Persian Arts Society Music Institute and performed a special Nowruz program.

The Grand Haft Sin Display though was a stunning exhibit featuring an eye-catching centerpiece of Nowruz as would be seen in Iranian households to ring in the New Year. Families gather around an ornate fabric-draped table, laden with items that represent fertility, evolution, rebirth, prosperity, love, health and beauty. The larger than life exhibit was truly a showstopper. Described as "one of the wonders of world trance music," by The Los Angeles Times, Mamak Khadem captivated audiences by blending her roots in the ancient poetry and music of the Persian masters with a bold and revolutionary new sound. One of top Balkan brass bands, DĹžambo AguĹĄevi Orchestra from Macedonia joined her with a horned brass band ensemble, a fusion of traditional Balkan, Gypsy and Turkish music influenced by swing, jazz and pop and film music. DAF Ensemble featured seven women playing DAF together, a large Middle Eastern frame drum used in popular and classical music, dressed in traditional outfits as an all female ensemble lead by artists Arezoo Koochakan and featuring folks songs from all regions of Iran. While a rare United States performance by Iranian folk legend Sima Bina was planned, she was unable to join the celebrations due to travel restriction imposed on individuals of Iranian decent visiting the United States. Instead local artist and renowned musician Mojgan Shajarian graciously accepted to step in as the headliner for the performance at Royce Hall. The whole event was beautifully organized by the Farhang Foundation, a nonreligious, nonpolitical and not-for-profit foundation established in 2008 to celebrate and promote Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community at large. The Foundation supports a broad range of academic activities in Southern California by funding university programs, publications and conferences. The Foundation also supports diverse cultural programs such as the celebration of Nowruz (Iranian New Year) and Shab-e Yalda (Winter Solstice), theater, dance performances, film screenings and poetry reading in Southern California. RESTAURANT REVIEW FARMHOUSE LAUNCHES IN LOS ANGELES A new ‘seed to plate’ restaurant is now open at the Beverly Center. Led by Executive Farmer Nathan Peitso of Kenter Canyon Farms, the new dining concept redefines the traditional restaurant model by working directly with the region’s top farmers to grow, harvest, and create dishes available here. Peitso, a second-generation farmer, creates a seasonal farm-traceable ‘seed to plate’ cuisine showcasing ingredients at their peak each month. Think nutty squash, dense baby romaine lettuce simply grilled, ripe heirloom tomatoes, sweet melons, aromatic fresh basil and mint. The Spring 2018 menu focuses on peas from Kong Farm, cauliflower from both Weiser Farm and Kong Farms, carrots from Weiser Farms, and responsibly farmed meat, poultry, and sustainable seafood.
