Safe Ways to Recreate Outside This Summer

Recreate Responsibly Coalition Urges Everyone to Do Their Part to Help Build an Inclusive Outdoors As states and local communities continue to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, guidelines about what activities are safest and where people should visit continue to evolve. Many are seeking opportunities for outdoor recreation, including visits to the nation’s public lands, waterways and public spaces like parks and trails . With the summer season in full swing, the Recreate Responsibly Coalition released tips for successfully and safely recreating outdoors. The coalition first came together two months ago as a group of two dozen organizations based in Washington State. Since then, the group has grown into a diverse, nationwide community of over 500 businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, outdoor media and influencers. The coalition’s common ground is a shared love of the outdoors, a desire to help everyone experience the benefits of nature, and a belief that by sharing best practices, people can get outside safely and help keep parks, trails and public lands open. The overall #RecreateResponsibly message remains simple: We all have a role to play in keeping people, places and communities safe as we enjoy the outdoors this summer and beyond. Importantly, the last month also has served as a vital reminder that everyone can contribute to making society and the outdoors more inclusive and equitable, for all to feel welcomed. The coalition is calling on outdoors enthusiasts to do their part to help build a safe and welcoming outdoors for all identities and abilities.

An uncommon vacation destination on the east coast but a worthy one nonetheless is the city of Wilmington. Wrightsville Beach is one of the best beaches in the state of North Carolina.

STAY While there are hotels aplenty to make your stay comfortable, part of the charm in a city steeped in history is to also spend some time in a bed and breakfast and enjoy that aspect of southern hospitality. At Greystone Inn, you can enjoy just that in spades, right from the spacious rooms and traditional dĂŠcor to community breakfasts and evening happy hours. Walking to most activities in the downtown area is convenient from here. If you must stay by the water though then The Holiday Inn Resort is right on the beach. Ocean views from your room and direct access to the beach make this a great choice for your time in this city.

play Begin at the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History which preserves and shares the 100-year history of Wrightsville Beach. If you are feeling outdoorsy then the Wrightsville Beach Kayak is the spot for you to rent a kayak and explore the water; they deliver the kayak where you want it and will pick it up for you when you’re done. If you prefer to stay on land then The Loop, a 2.45-mile fitness trail that circles the island is your best bet. It’s popular with walkers, runners, bikers, moms with strollers, and easily accessible. Take a film tour in Wilmington at EUE/Screen Gems Studios for an insider’s look at the largest studio complex east of California. Walk the 10-stage working lot, access sound stages and go behind the scenes of shows you’ve seen on TV. A trip to the Coastal Education Center offers visitors of all ages a coastal learning experience at the state’s only nonprofit organization that focuses exclusively on protecting and restoring the coast through education, advocacy and habitat preservation and restoration. To enjoy time on the water, try a Scenic Nature Tour/Cruise via Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours where you can hear the captain narrate the history of Wrightsville during the one-hour boat ride. Also learn about the history and ecology of Masonboro Island, the longest undisturbed barrier island ecosystem in southern North Carolina, accessible only by boat.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Tours are available here and you traverse all of downtown listening to your guide’s stories of all the streets and homes and businesses here. Enjoy Wilmington Water Tours – a one-hour narrated cruise of Cape Fear River. Lunch at Basics Restaurant in The Cotton Exchange, specializing in Southern cuisine, and then walk to the riverfront and explore downtown Wilmington’s Riverwalk, shops and restaurants.

For some quality time with nature, visit Airlie Gardens for a one-hour guided tour. Airlie Gardens encompasses 67 acres of beautiful Gilded Age gardens and lakes, as well as the region’s first permanent butterfly house. Watch out for hidden sculptures and installations.

Visit one or more of Wilmington’s historic homes: Latimer House (Victorian era) or Bellamy Mansion (antebellum mansion and restored slave quarters). A guided tour here provides an inkling of what life might have been like back in that era.

Get a free brewery tour and tasting at Front Street Brewery, a restaurant and microbrewery with delicious food and locally handcrafted beer served in the comfortably casual ambiance of a beautiful historic building.

Also the Hollywood Location Walk to explore the sets and real locations of several popular movies and TV shows filmed in Wilmington is a fun activity. Additionally, self-guided history tours of downtown Wilmington using a narrated app are available via www.wilmingtonhistorytours.com Other points of interest include Battleship North Carolina, a WWII battleship memorial, and Cape Fear Museum of History & Science.

dine

junE/july 2020

Consider Oceanic Restaurant – the only non-hotel restaurant at Wrightsville Beach situated on the beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with breathtaking outdoor seating and fresh seafood. Or head to Dockside Restaurant and Bar located on the water’s edge, known for its laid-back, rustic atmosphere. At South Beach Grill overlooking the scenic Banks Channel, dine on everything from burgers to dishes highlighting the bounty of fresh Carolina coastal seafood. Tower 7 Baja Mexican Grill serves up tasty tacos and other Mexican favorites and The Trolly Stop offers an abundance of awesome twists on the classic hot dog. At Bluewater Grill, located on the Intracoastal Waterway, enjoy fresh seafood with a Caribbean flair accompanied by live music on the patio select days. For breakfast, stop by Café Del Mar which features coffee from local roasteries and fresh baked muffins, bagels, breakfast burritos and biscuits. Other options include Causeway Café – a local spot loved by many long-term customers – and Oceans which is located on the main level of the Holiday Inn Resort with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean with plenty of outdoor seating available. Plan for dinner at Caprice Bistro, for some French fare but follow it up with a Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington; it is considered among the most haunted cities in the world with 275-year-old alleyways and many tales of poor lost souls that still linger in Port City.

Touchless Travel Blueprint for the Post-pandemic World The next time you go to an airport, don’t expect to touch anything other than your own mobile phone. From arriving at the airport to collecting your luggage, the future of air travel in the COVID-19 world and beyond will be automated, touchless and more convenient than ever. SimpliFlying has released a report showing exactly what touchless travel will look like, detailing 29 areas of the passenger experience that are set to change. The report is powered by an innovator in touchless technologies, Elenium Automation. The aim of the report is to act as a blueprint for airlines and airports worldwide. Many of the solutions detailed are Live now, with others in the final stages of development. The different areas of travel going touchless include: PPE vending machines when you arrive. Examples of airports that already have these include Dubai and Las Vegas. Kiosks and terminals that measure your vital signs and connect you to a Doctor via video if needed. Developed by Elenium Automation, these terminals are being piloted by Abu Dhabi Airport right now. Touchless check-in and baggage drop. Biometric recognition eliminates the need to scan boarding passes. With the use of Elenium’s BagDNA, each bag is then uniquely recognized in three seconds without the need to use any form of bag tags.

Touchless airport security involves advanced body scanners, as well as bag scanners that don’t need you to remove items such as liquids and place them on trays. Touchless shopping where you order via apps, digital vending machines and virtual ‘shopping walls’. Passengers will be recognized via biometric data and can also have the shopping delivered direct to their hotels or homes. Contactless boarding, like ‘bingo boarding’ pilot at London’s Gatwick Airport, where you are individually called up when it is time to board, instead of crowds milling around the gate. No more seat-back pockets, with both safety cards and food menus being displayed on the seat-back screens and accessible digitally via your phone. This is a solution in development now by IFE company PXcom. Self-cleaning lavatories, such as those developed by Boeing in 2016, where ultraviolet lights disinfect 99.99% of germs. Finally, upon arrival passengers can expect to see touchless immigration and customs procedures, and baggage notifications, again to stop crowds congregating around individual baggage reclaim belts. Touchless travel is set to improve the passenger experience overall. Coinciding with the release of the Touchless Travel Report, the SimpliFlying Launchpad accelerator is accepting applications from innovative startups that are ready-to-deploy touchless technologies to help kickstart travel. Meanwhile, take a look at some of the highlights.

international destination Known as a shopping haven globally, Dubai is one of the most visited cities in the world, thanks to its well-connected international airport as well as its tourism attractions. Travelers head here in droves every year from every corner of the world for a glimpse of what truly makes this Arab destination a magical place to visit. Malls here are tourist venues all their own – each is themed and includes several indoor attractions in addition to fascinating architecture and design along with name brands and food courts that have their own fan following. In fact, The Dubai Mall is said to be the world’s largest shopping mall. For more local products and purchases such as handicrafts and gifts, you’d want to head straight for some of the old markets or historic souks that are located on either side of the Dubai Creek, which is also where you can indulge in a leisurely abra or dhow ride on a traditional wooden boat. Try the ride by day and again by night for the best experience and even take in a dinner cruise if you can – Arab meals and music bring you the traditional hospitality experience. The Dubai Creek Park usually has a year-round schedule of special events that are also a big draw. You possibly also know of Dubai as the city of gold given the quality of the gold jewelry found here as well as the number of shops specializing in the dazzling metal. One step inside the grand Gold Souk is all you need to see – the quality of the workmanship on the jewelry sold here as well as the pricing is considered quite competitive. Gold purchases are encouraged but if you are looking for other souvenirs as a memory of your trip then the spice souk and incense souk as well as perfume souk are where you must head next. Getting around is fairly easy – while taxis can

be found most anywhere and rideshare services are available as well, do try the metro, tram or monorail if convenient to your plans. Local guides are easily found online, and tour companies offer daily history, culture, arts and food tours, some of which are also walking tours. Outdoor areas and activities in Dubai are common and especially frequented in the cooler winter months. Local parks and gardens serve as great picnic spots and rest areas for groups large and small. The Dubai Miracle Garden is a flower garden in Dubailand and the world’s largest flower garden. It is quite spectacular that an outdoor spectacle of this nature is well-maintained and accessible to the public given the arid landscape

junE/july 2020 and unforgiving summer temperatures. Thankfully, the garden is closed in peak summer but open to the public the rest of the year. Millions of flowers and several varieties come together in themed areas or as floral structures in the shape of peacocks and houses, among others, to wow visitors. Beaches are also a big part of the lifestyle here and some of the popular spots are JBR Beach and Al Mamzar. The modern architectural style found in Dubai fascinates most travelers. The combination of Arab and Islamic architecture with modern styles has been the basis for many marvels in construction. The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, is located here and the observation deck with the outdoor space is a must-do on any travelers list. The cultural musical fountain show is not to be missed. Arab culture can be enjoyed right from

the music and arts and local fashion to cuisine and overall lifestyle. Mosques are found at every corner and some will also allow visitors with prior arrangements or on certain visitation days and hours. Other religious venues are also available here should you want to visit during your travels. Though anytime other than peak summer is good for a visit to Dubai, you might want to coordinate your dates of travel in the future to align with annual events like the Dubai Shopping Festival and the Dubai Summer Surprises when deals and steals aplenty are to be found whether with shopping and attractions or stays and dining. Other national holidays that are great times to visit to truly observe local traditions and culture are Eid or Ramadan and National Day. The dining scene covers the gamut from Arabic cuisine to international flavors, budget to lavish, comfort to adventurous. You can find shawarma

and falafel or contemporary American and Indian cuisine. Coffee shops here will offer shisha/hookah sometimes and qahwa (black coffee) or karak chai (sweet milky tea) are the local hot beverages of choice. You will notice that dining at restaurants sometimes is replaced by the food courts, ready to eat sections and grab and go counters inside grocery stores and supermarkets. Any chance to enjoy Arab food though is an opportunity to taste local delicacies or regional variations to commonly found Arabic food. Our recommendations include Awani in The Beach JBR for Levant and Armenian cuisine, Al Hamidieh for Syrian, Lebanese and Turkish cuisine and Carnival by Tresind for post-

28 www.travelerandtourist.com

modern Indian cuisine. The Bab al Shams Desert Resort’s weekend brunch is a grand spread of local and international preparations, and for regional Khaleeji treats and sweets dine at Logma and Sukkar respectively. For a quick day trip, head to Abu Dhabi to visit The Louvre and the Grand Mosque – both structures are design marvels inside and out. Both venues offer tours and can easily be covered in a day. Take a break for lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants in The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal before driving back to Dubai. For a day trip within the emirate itself, consider Love Lakes in Al Qudra, a heart-shaped, manmade lake in the

junE/july 2020 desert. Walking paths and picnic spots along the lake provide avenues to enjoy the water body or also drive around to other areas that serve as bird sanctuaries where you can see flamingo, ducks, swans and several other species. Attractions to add on your itinerary are The Dubai Fountain in Burj Khalifa Lake in downtown Dubai, Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab, Meydan Beach Club in Jumeirah, Dubai Opera, Dubai Global Village and Mall of the Emirates. The Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park is an easily recognizable landmark towering high and clearly visible from

afar. The timed entry to the venue begins with a presentation of the past history of the city and ends with a depiction of future progress. But what occurs in between is the highlight – a high speed elevator takes you to the top within seconds where you enter the center of the frame to see a bird’s eye view of the city all around. Part of the flooring at this top level is transparent, providing views all the way to the bottom – this is also called the magic carpet portion of this attraction. If you have time to spare, they do offer a small café at the top to enjoy light beverages and bites while enjoying the views. Dubai Garden Glow in another part of the same park is a show of light displays organized to various themes. The walk along the whole park can take a few hours. This also includes an ice park featuring larger than life ice carvings and a house of illusions that can pose tricky when it comes to photography. When it comes to museums, the Etihad Museum is a great start to understanding the history and formation of the emirate as well as social and political developments in the region while the Dubai Museum and Al Fahidi Fort gives perspective on the heritage and lifestyle of the Arab peoples of the area. This year, Dubai was scheduled to host the World Expo 2020 but the global pandemic has resulted in a change of plans and the emirate will now host the event in 2021, which might be a good time to consider visiting as the city reopens to international tourism. Since many families are planning an RV trip for the first time this summer, Josh and Christina Dyches, experts at RVing with the family, shared their best tips for hitting the road with the family. They sold their house and moved into an RV with their four kids to begin a journey they document on their popular YouTube channel, Dyches Fam. While they describe the experience as pure craziness, they wouldn’t want to have it any other way. It’s not easy to wrangle a family of six in an RV but the Dyches Family has it down to a science. Here are five tips on how to make it all work: 1. Change your way of thinking! “Less is more, yes you can live without it. If you haven’t used something this month get rid of it and don’t allow yourself to make unnecessary purchases. We each downsized to only ten outfits, in fact each person has only one drawer to fit all their clothes in,” Christina Dyches explains. When packing for your RV trip remind yourself that many campgrounds have laundry facilities so you can pack even less clothing to have more room for your family to move around the RV. 2. Get smart with your organization. “I use command hooks to hang everything including hats, paperwork, fruit, paper plates, cleaning supplies, they’re so versatile and easily removable,” Christina details. “We store our extra coats and shoes in a suitcase, so they are out of the way and we fold our

clothes using the Marie Kondo method so there’s no extra searching.” 3. When everyone goes stir crazy, get outside! Christina says, “We try to do something active every day, even on travel days. We’ll eat at parks with playgrounds or take a break at trampoline parks. If things start getting crazy, we all go outside and do jumping jacks.” Many campgrounds have great amenities to help you break out from the RV and enjoy where you’re at! 4. Join camping memberships such as Thousand Trails to do the most possible camping! Thousand Trails gives you unlimited nights of camping across the country so you can enjoy as many camping opportunities as you’d like. “They have playgrounds, pools, sports courts, and open areas to keep the kids happy on days when we just want to relax,” Christina adds. 5. Keep it clean. “Staying organized in a small space means when you’re done with it, put it away. You can’t leave things out, ever! When we wake up, everyone cleans up their bed, after school everyone puts their books away. Even if a couple things are left out, then there’s nowhere to eat or sleep. Once a week we clean every inch of the RV, do laundry, reorganize, and make any repairs necessary,” she adds. While school may not be in session during your road trip, it’s important to remember to keep everything organized to maximize your space. “Traveling with the family is so fun, the more the merrier. It’s like going on a new adventure everyday with your best friends,” Christina says, which makes all the craziness worth it. (Image: Aston Yao on Unsplash)

restaurant review

Kazan Opens in Iconic Beverly Hills Restaurant Row noodles. The first noodle restaurant in the world that received a Michelin star was also a soba restaurant. There are many excellent ramen spots in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, good soba is far tougher to come across though. As a self-taught chef, Ryu has spent more than half of his life in the United States, so he understands both Japanese and American culture. He came to the country when he was 14, with dreams of one day starting his own restaurant – that included a lot of research before even getting close to fulfilling his dream. He has always had a passion for Japanese food culture, especially for noodles. Kazan opened its doors to amazing success in late 2019, largely due to its chef and owner Ryu Isobe, the brainchild of Tatsu Ramen, who has now moved on to offer his own signature style of noodles. The focus is on homemade Japanese style soba noodles and everything is made fresh daily. Soba noodle has a history of around 1,300 years in Japan, while ramen only compares to 90 years. The current trend in Japan is different types of high-end handmade soba 34 www.travelerandtourist.com

However, soba isn’t just a simple dipping noodle, it has many different styles. The imagination is the main ingredient of the soba. “I have no boundaries as a chef,” Ryu explains. “I didn’t get any training from actual chefs, I just get the ingredients, taste it and imagination is the biggest ingredient of my food.” He purchased a state-of-the-art noodle machine and explored all kinds of flours, different ratios of the water and salt, and a variety of other ingredients. “That’s how I came up with my noodles, also I really wanted

debonair drinks While we can’t travel abroad just yet, it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate every day by enjoying a few of the most popular cocktails served at Kilkea Castle in Ireland. One of Head Bartender Andrew Ewing’s favorite drinks is a tasty cocktail inspired by the classic Negroni. In this version, a sweet, woody bourbon is used instead of gin, giving the drink a smooth and earthy flavor. Finished with an orange peel and a little bit of flame, this beverage is sure to impress.

junE/july 2020 Another of the master mixologist’s preferred cocktails is the Anglo-Norman. Inspired by the history of the 12th-century fortress, this delicious drink is slightly sweet and easy to drink. INGREDIENTS: .75oz Absolut Citron .75oz Cointreau .75oz St. Germaine .75oz Lime Juice .75oz Sugar Syrup PREPARATION: Chill a rocks glass. Shake all ingredients with ice and fine strain over ice into the glass. Top up with cranberry juice and garnish with a lime twist.

INGREDIENTS: 2 oz. Bourbon 3/4 oz. Campari 3/4 oz. Sweet Vermouth Orange Peel for garnish PREPARATION: Stir bourbon, Campari, and vermouth in an ice-filled shaker and then strain into a cocktail glass filled with fresh ice. Flame the orange peel atop the drink. Squeeze the peel side toward the cocktail to express the oils and light a match in between the peel and the drink and then drop the peel into the cocktail.

Both concoctions are served at the luxury hotel, resort and golf club which is located in County Kildare, Ireland and is just 45 minutes from Dublin International Airport. (Images: Kilkea Castle)

First Mobility Ecosystem with Autonomous Vehicles for City Needs Launched NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB), a Swedish car manufacturer has announced its new mobility ecosystem: PONS - the first generation of autonomous vehicles with a connected user interface, which could become the mobility solution for smart and sustainable cities. The self-driving vehicle Sango is the centerpiece of the system. NEVS’ vision is to shape a sustainable future by offering a combined product portfolio of electrical vehicles and mobility solutions, for example car sharing. The headquarter is situated in Trollhättan where about 800, mainly engineers, work with developing mobility solutions. NEVS has developed PONS because cities all over the world, clogged by pollution and traffic, want to do whatever they can to reduce the use of cars. There are 1.3 billion cars in the world today, but they are used only 5% of the time. In parallel with the problem of pollution and traffic increasing,

44 www.travelerandtourist.com

the development of technology for self-driving vehicles is being pushed forward by niche software companies aiming to create more sustainable and traffic-optimized cities while the car industry has yet to come up with vehicles - hardware - adapted to the new conditions and opportunities that a self-driving world creates. This is probably because a world with less traffic means fewer cars. NEVS believes there is no reason to own an autonomous vehicle because it can pick the passengers up from wherever they are and take them wherever they want to go in the city, at a fair price. At the same time, they don’t have to worry about parking, refueling, service or running costs. “We started by looking at why urban citizens have such strong desire to use their own cars rather than public transport, even if it means sitting in traffic jams for hours each day. The reason is privacy - in your own car you feel safe, secure, relaxed and free,” says Anna Haupt, VP Mobility Solutions at NEVS With that as a starting point, NEVS began to develop a completely new vehicle: Sango, which is ready to be integrated with any of the self-driving software systems available. For the launch in Sweden, NEVS has partnered with AutoX, a leading L4 autonomous driving technology company based in Silicon Valley and Shenzhen. The AutoX AI Driver will be driving the Sango. AutoX was chosen for its unique software-hardware integrated approach, safety and scalability, and ability to navigate in dense urban environments. “We realized that, to be able to really benefit from autonomous technology, we had to design a vehicle that would not only be an enabler for shared vehicles, but also for shared rides. How do you

junE/july 2020

combine privacy with sharing? That was one of the main challenges to overcome,” says Anna Haupt One solution is Sango’s flexible interior which meets differing travel needs with three settings - private, social and family. Depending on which setting is selected, up to six people can travel in the vehicle. Sango has six movable seats in three rows and is fitted with privacy walls that can be raised and lowered. When raised, the vehicle is divided into four smaller areas for private journeys for up to four people. In social setting, the dividing walls are lowered to allow four people to travel together facing each other. In family setting, up to six people, seated in three rows, can travel comfortable together. As well as the Sango vehicle, the PONS mobility system also comprises a user interface in the form

of an app and a fleet management system which monitors and optimizes the fleet of vehicles when it is operating throughout the city. “Getting from A to B with self-driving electric vehicles is not as far off as perhaps the car industry is implying. The era of one person per car and the era of owning a car, are soon things of the past. A new era is coming, where cars are optimized for city mobility and better quality of life for the individual,” says Anna Haupt. The next step for NEVS is a pilot in Stockholm where a fleet of around ten autonomous vehicles, known as robotaxis, will be used by the public. The first built version of Sango is currently being testdriven at the NEVS’ site in Trollhättan together with functional tests of the PONS mobility ecosystem. (Images: NEVS)

(Image: Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics)

junE/july 2020 There’s a reason the Caprese Salad is a classic. Its genius lies in the simplicity of combining fresh seasonal tomatoes and basil leaves from the garden with fresh mozzarella cheese and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics offers fresh spins on the idea, inspired by their variety of award-winning Fresh Mozzarella sizes and shapes. Don’t be surprised if these salad suggestions become classics, too.

Sliced Peach Caprese Salad: Use Mozzarella Medallions garnished with mint and basil. Drizzle with just a bit of dressing made with fruit-flavored vinegar, honey and extra virgin olive oil. Grape Tomatoes, Kalamata Olives and Marinated Fresh Mozzarella-Ciliegine: Dress the salad with a drizzle of the Crave Brothers signature marinade and a simple garnish of a few snips of fresh Mediterranean herbs for this great combination. Pitted Fresh Cherries and Fresh Mozzarella Ciliegine: Enhance with an optional drizzle of fruitinfused balsamic vinegar or a splash of extra virgin olive oil flavored with a drop of almond or vanilla extract. Garnish with thyme leaves. Large Strawberries and Fresh Mozzarella Ovolines: Dotted with balsamic glaze, a bit of freshly ground black pepper if desired, and freshly chopped mint leaves. Slice or chop the Fresh Mozzarella Ovolines and strawberries into pieces that are roughly the same size.
