LIMEY my second visit to Hastings in a year. Never been there before, but now I’m practically a local. Last time it was to cycle bits of the South Down Way but this time it was more of a quick ride to the pub kind of a trip. That being said and not wishing to tread on Pernickety’s size 10’s we did encounter some great places to eat, drink and enjoy the tropical weather.

First I must mention The Crown in All Saints St, Hastings. We clocked up two visits, one for their fantastic food and then the next day to have a bit of a trawl through their excellent wine list, while sitting outside in the sun. All Saints Street is pretty narrow so the guy who lives opposite has called his house Pub View - that is a bit of an understatement. While we were sitting there he opened his front, stable door and fed half a loaf of bread to a very friendly seagull that was the size of a London Bus and obviously dined there daily.

Next and definitely our favourite place, was the Goat Ledge on the front at St Leonards. Luckily we hit it at brunch time on a Monday but I guess on a music night or busy weekend the place gets mobbed. The cafe is a set of brightly overpainted shacks and beach huts all huddled together alongside eating booths and a small deck chair jetty. The food is mostly interesting fish and veg combinations in bread or baps that you can eat out of a paper bag plus delicious cakes and a really magnificent selection of hot and cold drinks, beer, wine and cocktails and even a bottle of bubbly if you’re feeling flush. I get the impression this place with its super friendly staff is a big hit with the locals, especially dog owners walking Fido on the front.

Not quite so in your face but just as wacky is The Beacon at the top of Whistlers Steps. It looks like a normal large family house, which it is, as all the family who live there

work in the place. It’s a converted old primary school. Inside there is a bar and a restaurant room and out in the garden are some sheds you can use for private gatherings, tables all over the lawn, a log shelter for the barbecue and the wing of the primary school where you can stay. The evening we were there it was barbecue night and there was a great live trio called Los Twangueros. Led by the excellent guitarist Andy Neate. This local band specialize in Balearic/Latin instrumentals, very soothing.

Finally we decided to go East and e bike over the hills to Fairlight and try out The Cove as highly recommended by Grace Dent. Unfortunately, we hit it on Pizza Tuesday but the pizza truck guys in the car park knew their stuff and we couldn’t leave as our mate Kev, who you might know better as the French clown Monsieur BonBon, had elected to swim the 4 miles to the pub along the coast (What!). Unfortunately he only managed half of that in the water after a slightly bizarre traffic accident with a large jellyfish but none the less still managed to arrive just before the pizza van closed. Pretty impressive Kev!

Incidentally Grace Dent’s review of The Cove sent so many people their way, in the first month of opening, that it nearly scuppered their business. I am hoping my enthusiasm for The Goat Ledge doesn’t send a tidal wave of Broad Sheep readers to St Leonards that sinks the whole show!

N ecclesiastical architecture the terms ‘undercroft’ and ‘crypt’ are interchangeable, though it is only in the latter that you will find tombs. Both spaces were invariably constructed underground – or partially undergroundbefore stone masons began work on the superstructure. Vaulted ground-level storage undercrofts (such as at Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire) were sometimes added as an afterthought, often for storing non-perishable vittles and wine casks.

Hereford has a small and intimate crypt for prayer, beneath the Lady Chapel. Worcester Cathedral recently converted its vaulted undercroft into a teaching space for local school groups. Canterbury Cathedral’s undercroft is the oldest part the cathedral, dating back to the 11th century (in the 13th century it housed the tomb of the martyred Thomas Beckett). At York Minister, during emergency underpinning operations in the 1970s, evidence was uncovered of the barracks of two Roman legions.

Glorious Ely Cathedral (‘The Ship of the Fens’) has a tearoom and restaurant in its 12th century crypt. Eateries – not strictly a religious activity, though dedicated ‘foodies’ would argue otherwise – have always been a popular option (St Paul’s; St Martin-in-the-Fields). Before opening his Café at All Saints (which last year celebrated its 25th anniversary) in Hereford’s oldest church, proprietor Bill Sewell had a restaurant called ‘The Place Below’ in the crypt of the City of London church of St Mary-le-Bow.

Church reordering specialist Rev Andrew Mottram, who worked with Bill and local architect Rod Robinson on All Saints’ award-winning reconfiguration, was also the driving force behind the subterranean transformation at Worcester Cathedral. Until the Reformation, Worcester Cathedral was the centre of an important Benedictine Order. The undercroft served as the monks’ refectory.

A safety-compliant disability lift ramp was ingeniously inserted into a repaired medieval vault to create a sublime Visitors Learning Centre. Architects were Acanthus Clews (Cathedral Architect Camilla Finlay), funding came from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the refurbished space – which bristles with hi-tech audio-visual teaching aids - is now used by some 6,000 young people each year. In 2021 it won an Architects Journal Retrofit Award, an exemplar of sensitive non-intrusive conservation.

Some years ago my wife and I went on an escorted tour of Provence. Our overnight accommodation for the weeklong trip turned out to be the beautifully-converted former Royal Convent of the Dominicans at Saint-Maximin-laSainte-Beaume, which is run along similar lines to the UK’s Landmark Trust (which aims to keep historic buildings in use as tourism bases) and the Spanish Paradore network. Our French ‘hostel’ even had a Michelin-starred restaurant. Bang next door was a 13th century basilica. Why a convent had once warranted an ornate basilica wasn’t immediately apparent.

The final chords of the rehearsal drifted down the stone steps like icicles, creating a glacial atmosphere. It was several minutes before I regained the strength to ascend the crypt’s stone steps and slip silently out into the night.

I mentioned this film in March’s Borderlines preview but now on general release it merits fuller attention not least as yet another tour de force from Isabelle Huppert – who also starred in director Jean-Paul Salomé’s last film, MAMA WEED – initially unrecognisable in a blonde hair-do, playing the real-life union rep at a nuclear plant threatened with huge job losses. After being physically attacked for standing up to dark forces at work there, a corrupt police investigation has her vilified, then prosecuted for supposedly fabricating this. There are vague similarities to Mike Nichols’ 1983 SILKWOOD here but Huppert, who I yield to no-one in my admiration of, conveys an intensity and multi-layered sensitivity that Meryl Streep never quite managed in that nuclear plant drama and being based on fact, LA SYNDICALISTE chillingly subtexts the structure of a hazardous, highly secretive industry. Offering a diverse menu of baguettes, paninis and ploughman’s lunches, it’s becoming a favourite place to gather and relax.

Justin and Helen really wanted something a bit special when it came to the cuisine, they secured British Guild of Chefs decorated Malcolm Campbell, who had been Head Chef for seven years at the Lakeside Golf Course in Garthmyl, Newtown. MR PERNICKETY and his Lovely Companion drove to Llangollen to see a new exhibition of paintings by Edward Bell, a fine artist, best known perhaps for the work he did with David Bowie in the 1980s when he produced album covers for the late Boy Wonder’s albums, Scary Monsters (1980) and Tin Machine (1988).

Mr P has been a longtime admirer of Bell’s wonderful Turneresque landscapes, and was a little disappointed to find only a few in this show. They were wonderful but all very small. The other works reflected questions no doubt spinning around Bell’s own head – ambivalent and schizophrenic presented in an inventive but disturbing way. Mr P took it in with interest, but, in the meantime, was faced with the more immediate problem of where on earth he and the LC were going to eat.

It was clear that the townspeople of Llangollen are not well served with eating places. Despite its eminence as the home of the International Musical Eisteddfod each July, it is for the rest of the year quite a dreary little town. There is an excellent pub/restaurant, The Cornmill, down beside the river Dee, opposite the puffer-train station, but Mr P had already enthusiastically reviewed the place for readers of the Woolly Organ.

He and the LC ended up in what looked like the liveliest of the other lack-lustre options available. The interior didn’t lift their spirits much. The walls, brown and beige, are decorated with a number of brightly-coloured photographs of prospective dishes with the proprietor’s “S&G” logo printed on them – not works of great beauty. The music being played was broadly Mediterranean, which matched the animated atmosphere among the other customers already there. This could have been construed as a positive sign that the place was obviously popular, but then, so are Mr Trump and Mr Johnson, by people of indiscriminate judgement and low standards.

The name of the place, S&G, which Mr P was told were the initials of the couple who owned it, as bland and meaningless as the Eurosounds that filled the air. While offering an impression of Italian-ness in its menu, it felt distinctly un-Italian, especially, the LC noted in her discerning way, the texture of her pizza, which she found too heavy to finish,

In fairness (Mr P is always fair) he and she had both enjoyed their starters of Spicy Chicken Wings and fried Calamari. Nor did Mr P find anything in particular to object to in his Three Cheese Tagliatelle, but somehow it didn’t fill him with the glow of happiness that a real Italian dish would have done. A glass of indifferent house red, and water served in Coca-Cola glasses gave them little encouragement to hang around. Nor, indeed, did the disposition of the staff who were distinctly unengaged with their customers. There was also an

elusive sense of bogusness about the place, as if it were trying to be something which it isn’t. The LC didn’t feel like prolonging the discomfort by eating a pudding, so that was that. She and Mr P left the restaurant dissatisfied and quite grumpy.

Book Review - ‘The Illusions’ by Liz Hyder T

HE Marches has been home to many writers over recent decades. There are obvious reasons – the views are wonderful, the air peaceful and full of birdsong, there is a kind of creative tension in this Welsh borderland, and, on the whole, houses are cheaper than in the mainstream. There is an impressive roll-call of those within the Broad Sheep’s footprint who have made their living by the pen and become known nationally, from John Osborne and Frank Keating to GF Newman and Matthew Engel, among others, now joined by Ludlow writer, Liz Hyder.

Liz, a former drama student and chirpy imp of a woman, was involved in Arts PR before deciding to apply her own writing talents to an extraordinarily original and enthusiastically received Young Adults’ novel, Bearmouth, about children working down the mines in 19th century England, which won The Branford Boase Award. In 2022, she published The Gifts, which brought her more acclaim and established her as a writer of adult fiction. Her latest title is The Illusions (Bonnier Books, June 2023, £14.99.)

There’s been a great deal of alarmed chatter about AI and what it might do to the creative arts, not dissimilar to that faced by W. Caxton when he first put letterpress to paper. There are genuine concerns of course, when publishers at a certain level conclude that it would be sensible to do without individual authors and all their funny, egocentric ways, and simply employ a complicit, obedient computer to bash out 70,000 words on meditation and diet for expectant fathers, or novels of uncomplicated romance between couples, usually heterosexual, from certain imprints, where 62,000 words and a hero whose given name begins with J and two misunderstandings between protagonists are obligatory before they will ultimately be resolved in mutual passion.

However, it’s hard to conceive that this disturbing new technology could possibly have had anything to do with Liz Hyder’s new novel, so original and unexpected is its graphic portrayal of magic, illusion and pioneering movies. In her book, magic is presented as the plausible extension to music-hall and variety shows of late 19th century Bristol.

It is set in that city in 1896, where Cecily Marsden, 16 year-old London waif, is assistant to a raggedy old trickster. He dies in an accident which she believes she has caused and is scared of the magical powers she thinks she possesses. In another part of the city, we find Eadie Carleton, a pioneering film-maker, angry at not being taken seriously by dismissive men. Rising star magician George

Perris enters her life and sees at once the vast potential of moving pictures. He believes it will revolutionise the world of magic and illusion, but first he must win Eadie’s trust.

In a world where rivalry and jealousy are not strangers, George and Eadie work towards fulfilling the legacy of one of magic’s greatest exponents who has suddenly died among them. Or so it seems.

Liz handles with virtuoso writing the readiness of the public to suspend disbelief when they are asked, and the relationship between actuality and perception, while she deftly immerses the reader in that creative, inventive pursuit of misleading the eye and tricking the mind. She has harnessed her deep love and knowledge of historical illusionists and early movie pioneers, to produce a story of independent women and men, talent, magic and power, and sucks the reader into a world where anything is possible, aided by a suggestion of magic realism in the psychokinetic powers of two of her principal characters.

This story of a coming together of strong, talented characters engaged in a fantastical world is told with rational clarity, sins and redemption clearly acknowledged, with a strong pleasing love story unfolding alongside the tense build up to an effective crescendo in a supreme show of magic. I reached the last page with regret and perhaps a tear in my eye.

The dog that didn’t bark. The Environment Agency and our polluted rivers

OR years now evidence has been piling up about the dire state of England’s rivers. The proportion of rivers achieving a good environmental state is a miserable 14% - well under one in five. The waterways of Wales are not quite as bad, but fewer than half of them are in good condition.

In England, it’s the job of the Environment Agency to monitor river pollution. However, the Agency’s role and impact has been steadily undermined by recent governments. Funding for the Agency’s operations has been cut by almost half in the dozen or so years since the Tories came into power, at first with the Lib Dems.

Evidence given to the Commons Environmental Audit Committee over a year ago suggests that the Agency has played an almost supine role in its own steep decline. Questioning witnesses, MPs wanted to know why the Agency had not been ringing loud alarm bells over most of the previous decade.

Some of the most telling answers came from a retired Agency official, Peter Lloyd. In his view, while the Agency goes through the motions of testing river quality, it is often asking the wrong questions. Lloyd worked at the EA for 40 years, during which time he found that the testing of river water was hopelessly muddled and almost guaranteed to fail.

He told the MPs that the monitoring of river water was “incredibly poor.” He went on, “The chemical monitoring of water quality in rivers and effluents was so poor, so inadequate and so misleading that I continually struggled to try to improve it.” Unfortunately, he said, he had little success.

Another witness spoke of a blighted stretch of the river Windrush in Oxfordshire. Professor Peter Hammond said that doing detailed analysis of the Windrush and its tributaries, he found that one stream had suffered a continuous spill of sewage into it lasting around half a year. He reckoned this would never have emerged from the kind of random testing, on say one day a month, routinely carried out by the Agency.

“For six months, that is six months without a break, it was spilling and breaking its permit. That is totally unacceptable. I believe that a six-month spill has completely wiped out the fish population in the brook and probably damaged other parts of the ecology.”

Much of the pollution that most alarms river users is human sewage, or the waste from farm livestock. But witnesses told the committee that the Environment Agency does no routine testing at all for faecal coliforms, the tell-tale biological markers of shit in our waterways.

A campaigner from Yorkshire who gave evidence had been horrified to learn this. Rebecca Malby is co-founder

of Ilkley Clean River. Around the year 2020 this group were trying to force the Agency and Yorkshire Water to get polluted sections of the River Wharfe near Ilkley cleaned up.

“The only way we could get regular testing in Ilkley was to apply for bathing water status, because there was no other way of calling people here to test the river.”

MPs were told this was the first time a stretch of river rather than seaside beach had been declared safe for bathing. But Rebecca Malby and her group also learned another fact that is of vital concern for all river users in England.

“The Environment Agency does not measure faecal bacteria. It does not measure the E. coli and enterococci, the things that make humans and animals sick if they go near the river. The stuff that comes out of our toilets.”

The former Agency man, Pete Lloyd, was asked if he knew why the Environment Agency was not testing for faecal pollution.

“The simple answer is that it has never done it. The question is really that a lot of rivers have sewage effluent in them. A lot of rivers will fail any sort of standard for microbiological content. I suppose that has never been considered as particularly relevant or a matter of concern.”

So what, if anything, have the Environment Agency and its leadership done to highlight their situation? Not long ago, the EA chief executive, Sir James Bevan, slipped quietly into retirement. A look at press coverage suggests the most newsworthy action he took in recent years was to threaten Agency staff with the sack if they told the media of their fury over the curbing of Agency powers and over the catastrophic funding cutbacks. Bevan should feel ashamed. And the millions of people who love England’s waterways should hope that the next head of the Environment Agency is a person with more guts and backbone.

You may not realise that these days Quakers have a very different image.

Last year we held two Open Days with cream teas at our lovely, black and white, 17th century Meeting House in Almeley Wootton and we were so successful in terms of visitors that we have decided to hold another!

Quakers, these days, come from all walks of life and uphold a progressive religious approach based on inward spiritual experience. We see our religion as a way of life rather than a dogma or a creed. It rests on a conviction that by looking into our inmost hearts people can have a direct communication within the very being of themselves. We may find it difficult to describe this in words, but we try to base our lives on it.

Early Quakers experienced the holy and realised that guidance could be found in all places and concluded that it is not necessary to have an ordained minister. This we maintain today believing that we share responsibility for what we do and everyone has a valuable contribution to make.

While we have no creeds or doctrines we acknowledge “guidelines” or testimonies as we call them, to enable us to lead our lives e.g. Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community and Equality.

We affirm the equality and dignity of all human beings regardless of race, creed, sex or sexuality and are concerned to promote social justice and relieve suffering wherever it occurs. We strive for honest dealings in all walks of life.

Quakers are interested and involved in the world around them, as individuals and as a group aiming to make a better world for all whether economically or environmentally and through our Peace testimony, (Quakers’ opposition to war), by trying to shine light on those factors which are the seeds of wars. However not every Quaker feels able to say “I would never fight”.

Meeting for Worship as we call our gatherings, are very simple. They begin in silence. We use it to sit together and open ourselves to the wisdom that comes out of stillness. It enriches us and shapes us, individually and collectively. This is what we mean by worship.

At some meetings the silence can last for the whole hour and become very deep and powerful; at others the stillness may lead one or more people to speak briefly in what we call ministry. Meetings are open to all comers.

Overall Quakers see our faith as a search for truth, not an arrival; a work in progress!

We would like to invite you in to visit our Meeting House which has over 350 years of history and to stroll round our burial ground which looks out over countryside towards the Black Mountains. Entrance is free and a cream tea and simple refreshments will be provided. The people who visited last year came for a variety of reasons; to visit a historic local building, explore their personal history, have an outing and some, even, to ask about Quakerism.

So whatever your reason for deciding to come along please be assured that we want you to go away with a fresh image of what a Quaker is when you leave. That Quakers are a vibrant, welcoming group, non-judgemental and open minded and, of course, can make a very good cream tea!
