Rundle Alumni Association our mission Alumni
The Rundle College Alumni Association desires to maintain a lifelong relationship with our alumni to continue promoting the goals of the mission statement (reaching their potential, attaining their best and celebrating with them when they do) in order to support our alumni at every opportunity.
RUNDLE 30 years and counting
A Cottage that became a Campus
In 1985, when Drs. Collett and Conklin opened the doors of Rundle College for the first time, twenty-two junior high students walked through those doors of a small four-room school. We called this the “Cottage. What a success story, as we are about to embark on opening the doors of our new Primary/Elementary School to complete the final phase of our combined College Campus; with an enrollment of over 1000 students from kindergarten to grade 12, along with our Rundle Academy program. I hope as Rundle Alumni you take pride in the fact that you were part of this tremendous journey and growth over the past 30 years. Not only is this a success story regarding growth, but more importantly, the outstanding academic, athletic and fine arts accomplishments that you were all part of achieving. Thanks to you, Rundle College has become one of the premier educational settings in the country. I hope you will continue to share with us, visit and reconnect as often as you can. Play Safe. Sincerely, David Hauk

RUNDLE a new generation of leadership Happiness is a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city - George Burns Be so good they can't ignore you - Steve Martin Dear Rundle Alumni,
This year I chose these two quotes with precision and purpose, to frame my comments for The Ascent. I believe they embody our alumni experience for several reasons. Firstly, as our Rundle Alumni Association grows, it is becoming a local, national and international family network. We are seeing our alumni spread around the world and make a difference everywhere they go. In today's day and age of technology, it is increasingly simple to “reduce” the size of our world and stay connected in spite of the distance and time between us. I encourage you to maintain your connections with our family in any way that works best for you - and we promise we will continue to do the same. S econdly, as you will note in the following pages, our individual alumni are simply “so good that others cannot ignore them.” We are fortunate to see our alumni succeed in diverse areas as law, business, the arts, science, medicine, engineering and social justice. Beyond the quantifiable accomplishments, we are extremely proud of the enduring character and perseverance each of our alumni members embodies. Near and far, our members are making a difference and our Rundle Alumni brand is quickly becoming associated with excellence in all fields. Finally, I opted to select two comedians to frame these comments because of the overall feeling that is experienced at each of our Rundle Alumni Association events. If you have attended a golf tournament, a reunion, a homecoming, a social or any other event, you will know that it is a time of great camaraderie, friendship and laughter. I look forward to seeing several of you at events in the coming days. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your ongoing connection and contributions to our Rundle College community. Sincerely, P. 4

RUNDLE historian Mary Baird
From 1987-present...29 years later, a few of the highlights... Just a few weeks ago, I spent the morning interviewing grade 9 students who were applying to speak at our graduation celebration. Those two hours spent that morning with those twelve students, I would have to say, is one of the highlights of this year. It was definitely one of those WOW moments! Afterwards, I felt so incredibly proud of the students who had been interviewed by a panel of three teachers; they were poised, confident, and mature beyond their years and each had shared their story. What was so apparent was the importance of connections and relationships and their ability to deal with challenges. While reflecting on that interview process, it started me thinking about some of the other highlights of my 29 years at Rundle College.
five highlights
that really speak I have chosen to share to what Rundle College is all about and why I still look forward to each and every day I spend in the halls of Rundle.
1.
I will always remember the several all-boys classes I taught Social Studies and English Language Arts to in the early years of Rundle. While I endeavored to teach them to write poetry, appreciate novels like Beauty, and participate in Japanese tea ceremonies, those boys provided me with the training necessary to raise two sons of my own. At the end of each day, there was always a story to share about the antics of the boys!
2.
Number two on the list, but likely number one in my heart, would have to be the 18 Edgewater Trips I organized and went on. These were special trips that allowed me to see students through a whole new lens. Working alongside students on the bridge, in the galley or in the engine room, allowed me to build relationships and memories with students!
3.
Whether it was pulling all-nighters with the yearbook crew in order to meet a deadline or just a weekly lunch meeting, being
P. 6
one of the yearbook teacher advisors in the early days exemplified teamwork and community. We really tried to ensure those memories would be preserved.
4. While I probably shouldn’t admit to this, another highlight was one of the pranks we pulled on a Social Studies teacher. After
parent-teacher interviews one evening, we removed EVERYTHING from his classroom! (oh, we did leave 12 newspapers for his students to sit on the next morning). I have always valued the fun, laughter and occasional prank shared with my colleagues. “Work hard, play hard;” that’s my motto!
5.
More recently (meaning in the last 10 years) two highlights have been sending our first two students on exchange to Australia (2010) and our Grade 12 students on our first service learning trip to Guatemala (2011). Both of these programs challenge students to step outside their comfort zone. Challenges allow us to grow and give us confidence; this is something we want the students who attend Rundle to experience. I believe these highlights really show what we value at Rundle College. First and foremost, it is the relationships we have built with our students, staff and families - our community. We are very proud of the programs we have built, the successes the students have had, and the impact they are having worldwide. Clearly, you, the alumni, have faced challenges and challenged yourselves since leaving Rundle. You are writing new chapters of your stories and I encourage you to return to Rundle College to share with us long-standing faculty that still remain, where you are and what you are doing. Do not be strangers, we love seeing and hearing from our alumni! Sincerely, Mary Baird

RUNDLE ALUMNI reflections
F
or the 30th anniversary of Rundle College, we decided to look back, way back, to 1989. Anoop Bungay ‘89 graduated almost 27 years ago and was one of the first graduates of Rundle College. Mr. Bungay joined us along with his lovely wife, Deepti, and his two children, Aneesh and Akshaay.
After graduating from Rundle College in 1989, Anoop received a degree from the University of Calgary and started his own business, a company called Mortgage Quote Canada. It is a highly successful business with offices across Canada, including Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia as well as an office in New Delhi, India. Looking back to the time he spent here at Rundle, Anoop most vividly recalls the faces of his graduating class. He has kept in touch with many of them over the years, noting their accomplishments, Anoop Bungay ‘89 and family. Member of the First Graduating Class occupations and families. When asked how Rundle helped prepare From Rundle College him for the future, he replied with a phrase which many people forget the meaning of, a phrase written on the school crest in sharp, black cursive: “Attendo Anoop believes that being a part of the first graduating class of Rundle ad Excellsiora,” Attention to Excellence … College is a gift. ‘Not just a gift,” he adds, “but an opportunity for myself My company is operating in a manner that is and my peers to be leaders at Rundle for the students coming after us.” equivalent to the motto attention to excellence. So, what I learned at Rundle College was, After mentioning the teachers involved in Anoop’s life back in high whatever you choose to do, do it well.” He noted the importance of paying attention to details, and striving in every school who still work at Rundle today, he could relive many fond aspect of your life to do your absolute best, especially in areas where memories. He can remember Ms. Baird, “a gem of a person”, as a you are passionate. Recognizing his roots, he goes on to note that the passionate junior high teacher. He recalls how she would have to try success within his business would have not been possible without to keep the rowdy, excited Junior High students in line. “She’s got his education at Rundle College. (He then suggested that we brush her well-coiffed hair and her nice appearance and she had to deal up on our Latin, at least to be able to understand our school motto, with these raggedy Junior High kids... I think that’s probably why she went into administration,” he laughs. and what it represents for our lives.) Anoop fondly remembers his high school graduation. He recollects the many faculty members, some of whom are still a part of the Rundle community today, and their pride and happiness of playing a positive role in the first graduating classes’ lives. He remembers the valedictorian, Hugh Jeffreys ‘89, and the fantastic, magical feeling of finally graduating and taking ownership of his future. However, he most importantly remembers the people who were there with him, his friends and teachers, and how the small, close-knit community contributed to a rich and personal high school experience. Anoop has some very affectionate memories of Rundle College, frequently mentioning the “camaraderie” that came with graduating in a class with only nine students, which he feels carries on in Rundle today. He also mentions how great his memories were in terms of Mr. Franklin and Ms. Baird, who both worked at the school back then. He feels that the closeness or the “esprit de corps” of the Rundle community was one of his greatest memories of high school.
P. 8
Anoop can also remember Mr. Franklin, who taught him science and tried to keep the grade twelve students focused on positive learning. One day, he brought a saxophone into school and played it for the class. Mr. Hauk, who he referred to as a “jocular, amusing fellow”, who taught his class Macbeth. “We’re thinking ‘He’s really going to be our teacher here?’ He ends up being the Headmaster for goodness sakes! That was a bit of a surprise,” he says.
RUNDLE ALUMNI reflections continues.... Anoop refers to Dr. Conklin as a “cool cat” who would be downstairs in the so-called library room teaching the grade twelves, who sometimes tried his patience. He realizes, after 25 years, that it must’ve been hard handling a gaggle of students “some of whom thought they were smarter than they actually were - all with grace.” Anoop can also recall Dr. Collett, who helped drive the class to Bridgeland Elementary to do some science experiments. “I recall two things: Dr. Collett was a careful driver and he had one nice ride!” After all these years, some things about Rundle have really stuck with Anoop, such as the motto, Attendo ad Excellsiora, which he uses as a standard for excellence. He also feels that the Overall, Anoop feels that what he took other students and their away from Rundle College is: “You can kindness and positivity do whatever you want, no matter how big has left a mark on him; or small it is and if you do it to the best “Rundle College gave me of your ability, that’s the best thing you the temperament and the can do.” skills to be resilient in this world.” He feels that it is powerful, being able to have small class sizes and connect with the students and teachers around you. He also states that he definitely was interested in going into business in high school; later on in life, he was able to achieve this dream.
#tb30years
Recognize anyone?
Some advice that he would give to current graduating students is: “Study hard, listen to your mother, polish your shoes and press your clothes, do what you like, don’t be afraid of making mistakes, and keep in touch with your friends and teachers, they’ll really appreciate it.” He then goes on to tell us a quote from his good friend, “‘Your attitude determines your altitude’, which basically means if you have a good outlook on life and a good constitution and you don’t sweat the small stuff, you’ll go places.” Finally, he compares Rundle College in 1989 to Rundle in 2016 in saying that the size of the school has changed greatly, and he reflects on the success that the school has experienced over the years. “You can’t build Rome in a day.” he says. “But I feel like it’s more important to ask me what hasn’t changed, and what hasn’t changed is walking around the school and seeing that ‘esprit de corps’, seeing the kids run around the school, seeing the art on the walls - it’s nice to see the burgundy uniforms, (I’m not sure I could still fit in my uniform)” he laughs. Anoop wraps up with the sense of closeness within the school, and how it’s still present in Rundle College, and though the size, the students, and the teachers have changed, the feeling of community hasn’t changed, and it will continue to live on within the halls of Rundle College. Roberto currently lives in Vienna, Austria.
Since graduating from Rundle, Dr. Holly Fritz ‘98 completed a bachelor’s degree in zoology at the U of C as well as a degree in dentistry at the U of A, Holly has been practicing dentistry for over 10 years and her office is conveniently located in Aspen, 1998 just down the street from Rundle’s campus on 17th Avenue. She really enjoys seeing her patients in their Rundle uniforms! Holly was married last year and expecting a baby boy this summer. Congratulations Holly and best of luck with the arrival of your little one! Alex Beavis ‘01 has been accepted into Mount Royal University's Social Work program and is currently doing his first practicum at the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club. Crosby Haight ‘01 and his wife Cara welcomed their baby girl, Lennox, last April. Happy 1st birthday Lennox!

Since 2013, Amanda Hauk ‘01 has been practicing law as a Crown Attorney in one of the country's busiest courthouses. Amanda routinely prosecutes complex criminal cases at both the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, Ontario. In the coming months, Amanda will be preparing to argue a constitutional challenge to the mandatory minimum sentence provisions of the Safe Streets and Communities Act, a piece of legislation that was brought in by the former Harper government. As a Crown Attorney, she represents the people of this great country.
Matt Waldorf ‘99 and his wife, Holly, recently celebrated the 1st birthday of their daughter Sydney Kate Waldorf. Sydney was born March 26, 2015. Both Matt and Holly are amazed at how fast the year has gone. Since tying the knot in August, 2014, Richard Lobsinger ‘02 and Laura Lobsinger (Harvey) ‘01 have welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their lives. Giselle Helene Lobsinger was born in May, 2015. She is a wonderfully happy little 2001 girl and a future Rundle alumni in the 2002 making. Congratulations to you both!
Throughout my practice, I often find myself relying on the negotiation skills I honed while attending Rundle College. Who would have thought debating the likes of Mr. Goettel, Ms. Belt, and Ms. Bristow would come in handy? As a former Rundle College student, I represent the current student body and Alumni; both, I consider an honour and a privilege. I can say without a doubt, I would not be where I am today without the teachers, friends and opportunities that I had at Rundle.
Dr. Herman Johal ‘01 welcomed his baby girl, Bani Johal, this year and made the move to Hamilton, where he started a new position as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and clinical scholar at McMaster University. Congratulations to you and your family Herman!

2003 “Thirty years old, and looking not a day over twenty...twenty-five, tops. Congratulations, Rundle College! Now, sadly, my "Most Likely To ..." entry from the 2003 yearbook has not come to pass (those rascals picked me as “most likely to win an Oscar” when I, at best, am more likely to get "Best Hip-Hop/Soul" in the P3 Gulds). However, there's still my novel "The Best and Wisest Man" (pick it up online or at Pages in Kensington!), forthcoming short stories in a horror anthology and on a science fiction website, along with a few acting credits in Calgary community theatre. And I blush to note that my valedictorian speech from all those years ago has racked up 178 views on YouTube (while you’re in a nostalgic mood, why not check it out?)! As for my equally improbably-named brother Fergus (Crawford ‘05), he’s doing great things in the world-renowned Prairie Horticulture course at Olds, well on his way to a career in the wild, fixing this all-too-damaged planet of ours (oh, the arguments we have over what goes in the compost ... court cases have been wrapped up faster). And I’m pleased that school friends have remained close over the years--last summer alone I was shuttling between Calgary, Canmore, and Vancouver for the weddings of Andrew Hopkinson ‘03, Mike Haws ‘03, and Steve Richards ‘03. I know what you’re asking: will it be long before the Crawford knot is tied? Well ... yes, probably. I attach a picture of myself with fellow ne’er-do-wells Luke Demjen ‘03 and Jordan Fleming ‘03, at the Hopkinson nuptials. When they told us we could have a helicopter ride, we assumed we’d be inside it ... Well, here’s to the next thirty, you old devils! Many happy returns!” Hamish Crawford ‘03

After spending over ten years living between Ontario and South Africa, Laura Harding (Barclay) ‘04 recently moved back to Calgary with her husband. Laura has now re-established her wedding photography business here, and is filling her time photographing families, newborns, and sporting events. Besides photography, you can find her playing ultimate frisbee or hiking in the mountains!

RC ALUMNI reaching potential After graduating from Rundle College, Alexandra Shiels ‘05 started at the University of Calgary in biological sciences. She had always intended to work in the medical profession and saw a bachelor degree as her first step in working toward medical school. After the first couple of years of university, Alexandra went on a trip to Haiti that changed her life and professional 2005 direction. She knew becoming a Registered Nurse was what she wanted to dedicate her life’s work to. In 2008, Alexandra started the bachelor of nursing program at the University of Lethbridge and finished one semester early and began applying for jobs. She had always known she wanted to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), however she knew it might be unlikely that she would obtain a job as a new graduate. Wanting to stand out from other applicants, Alexandra applied for a postbasic certificate program in neonatal nursing and was accepted into their distance education program. After over 110 applications to nursing positions throughout Calgary, she finally received an interview for the job of her dreams! Alexandra has worked at the Peter Lougheed Center’s NICU since 2012 where she takes care of all newborns, from the very premature, to full-term babies. Each day, she takes care of two or three babies and their families and teaches babies how to eat and teaches parents how to bathe and care for their newborns. Alexandra is also part of the team that assists deliveries to help ensure each baby makes a safe entrance into the world. Every day is different for Alexandra, and for her, it’s the best job in the world! Last year she completed her post-basic certificate and had the opportunity to take a practicum both in the community and at the Foothills Hospital NICU. Alexandra likes that the profession of nursing has an extremely varied group of people, and the opportunities that the profession provides are endless. “I am very proud to call myself a Registered Nurse.”

Graeham Douglas ‘06 has been a member of the Cambridge University Eco-Racing (CUER) team for two 2006 years, after previously being a member of the UBC Solar Car Team. CUER’s car takes one passenger (the driver), and uses only the power of the sun to drive at highway speeds! Graeham designed the steering and suspension on CUER’s 2015 car. In spite of working on solar cars for almost seven years, this was Graeham’s first race. CUER and Graeham had a major disappointment in 2013: their solar car crashed two days before the race and they were forced to withdraw from the event. The team was determined to redeem themselves in 2015! CUER had several setbacks leading up to the race. Most critically, their motor broke a few days before the event. Things were looking similar to 2013 - dire! The motor is one of the few parts on the car CUER didn’t build themselves, and it had an eight-week lead time. Fortunately, Solar Car Team Nuon from Delft, Netherlands loaned CUER a part from their old motor. After a nerve-racking day of rebuilding the motor with their stator, CUER was back on the road! The drive through the Outback is hard, especially for the solar car Every two years, teams from around the globe travel to driver. To minimize the Australian Outback for the 2015 Bridgestone World a e r o d y n a m i c Solar Challenge. The challenge is to design, build, and drag, the car is as race a solar powered car 3000km from Darwin, Northern small (cramped!) Territory to Adelaide, South Australia. as possible. Outside temperatures are over 40C and driving stints can be three hours or more. The is no air conditioning or entertainment system. Graeham was part of the team supporting the solar car. He drove a truck and trailer behind the solar car to pick it up if it broke down. At nights, he was part of the team to do maintenance on the car. He also was part of the team to set up the solar panel at 4:30AM to catch the sun’s first rays. The solar car team is a great opportunity for students to gain practical experience in design, project management, and teamwork. Many of CUER’s alumni end up at top automotive organizations, including Jaguar Landrover and Formula 1 teams. There are so many facets of the project: solar, electrical, mechanical, aerodynamics, race strategy, and fundraising. Failure in any one of these, inevitably leads to failure of the project as a whole. CUER had its best result ever in 2015, and the things they learned will prepare the team to do even better in the next race!

Jenna, a middle-distance runner for the Dinos Track and Field Team, was undefeated in the 600m this year and also collected several other awards this season.
All of us are on to new and exciting chapters in our lives, but we all look back on our time at Rundle very fondly!
As a student and full-time athlete, Stephen has learned many hard lessons about time management. Stephen is one of the world’s top-ranked waterskiers, and has many titles to his credit. Stephen recently competed in the World Waterski Championships in Mexico and was disappointed with this performance. “It taught me a lesson that I don’t want to experience again... it was rough.” Stephen did, however, win the gold medal in the Team division. After graduation, Stephen plans to move to Florida and chase the waterski dream for a few years.
Congratulations to Jake McKenna '12 who was named St. Francis Xavier University's Track and Field MVP this year.

RC ALUMNI reaching potential
2012
Alumna Nathalie Carson ‘12 spent her final year at UBC as the youngest ever Undergraduate President of the Mining Engineering Department, an industry that has less than 10% women employed. Having spent a summer working at a gold mine in Ecuador and a summer working at a copper mine in central BC, Natalie will be starting her post-grad career as a Mineral Processing/ Extraction Engineer at one of Canada’s largest mining operations. Prior to starting her new job, Natalie will be travelling to Chile for a month on a research trip, visiting some of the highest altitude mines in the world.
Taylor Caldwell ‘13 is finishing his third year of Civil Engineering at Queen’s University, and is having a great time. He has met so many great friends, and he stays involved by participating in numerous events, clubs, and design teams. Specifically this year, Taylor was the Safety Director of the Queen’s Bridge Building Team. The team is assigned the task of designing and building one-metre long bridges made only of popsicle sticks, glue, and dental floss. Teams show their bridges at CSCE’s Troitsky Bridge Building Competition hosted in Montreal, where they are tested and compared with other bridges constructed by various universities throughout Canada. Although this may seem trivial, some of these bridges can hold up to 4 tonnes when effective engineering principles are put to use - that’s equivalent to the weight of an elephant or mid-sized car! Being involved in activities on campus has allowed Taylor to enjoy life outside of school, and helped him create career opportunities. In the summer, Taylor will begin a 15-month engineering internship with Ferrovial Agroman in Mississauga, Ontario. Ferrovial Agroman is an engineering company based out of Spain that is internationally renowned for its design capacity and construction of exceptional projects; primarily its major transport infrastructures. After his internship, Taylor will return to Queen’s to complete his final year and receive his much desired Iron Ring!

Samantha Sirianni ‘13 is looking forward to representing her faculty, the Cumming School of Medicine, at the University of Calgary in the Students’ Union next year. Samantha is still active with the Kids Cancer Care Foundation - the organization the Rundle community supported with the Shave a Lid for a Kid campaign led by Samantha. This spring/summer season, Samantha will be a Senior Orientation Leader and a full-time camp counsellor at Kids Cancer Care Foundation’s - Camp Kindle. Great job, Samantha, 2013 for continuing to volunteer your time to support this important cause!
Jordan Ng ‘14 is currently studying to be a veterinarian at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. This summer Jordan will be volunteering at various veterinary clinics in the 2014 Calgary area - she’s very excited to work with animals and veterinarians. For the latter half of the summer, Jordan will be travelling to Romania on an archeological expedition to work on their military fortresses. Rundle alumna Morgan Gregg '15 received several awards this year. She was one of only 25 students in the province to receive the Premier's Citizenship Award for her community service, engagement in volunteer work, and having a positive impact in the community and school. She also received the Alberta Centennial Award as the top Premier's Award recipient. Along with these prestigious awards, Morgan was awarded the Governor General's Award for top high school academic achievement and one of only ten Grade 12 students to receive the Rutherford Scholars Award, given to the top ten recipients of the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship.
2015 Gavin Angman ’15 is currently studying engineering physics at the University of Victoria. Gavin and his team placed first on a semester-long engineering project which required them to design a mobility aid for mobility-challenged passengers travelling on BC ferries.

RUNDLE remembers The Rundle College community was shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Rundle College graduate Harman Boparai ’10 on August 7, 2015. Harman was going into his final year at Mount Royal University with a major in business. During and after high school he continued to play basketball, hockey and Tae Kwon-Do, where he received his black belt designation. Harman's magnetic, vibrant personality and contagious smile will be dearly missed.
TKW Foundation 1st Annual Leopard Print Gala
The Toni Kohn-Woodward Foundation was set up in loving memory by the Kohn family and Toni’s husband Stephen, to honour Toni’s passion of bringing beauty, love and light to everyone and everything she touched. Empowering young women to live their best life was a cause close to Toni’s heart. Thanks to the support of our community and the enormous success of the inaugural Leopard Print Gala, this cause will be carried on for generations to come, keeping Toni’s legacy alive. Before Toni’s passing, she had become involved with Urban Fitness 911, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, created to address the disparity of health and fitness in low-income communities. UF911 has opened a housing initiative in Los Angeles, supporting young women at risk. Because of Toni’s dedication, UF911, has named it “The Toni Kohn House”. Inspired by Urban Fitness 911’s Toni Kohn House, The Kohn Family and The Toni Kohn-Woodward Foundation is determined to open their own Toni Kohn Houses in major cities throughout Canada. The first one being here in Calgary, through proceeds raised at the Leopard Print Gala. Thank you to more than 650 guests who gathered at the Telus Convention Centre on Oct 24, 2015 to remember Toni. We are so proud to announce that we have committed over $1.3 MILLION to help young local women at risk. Together, we will change the lives of generations. Thank you so much for all your support in honouring Toni’s legacy.
The Kohn Family, and The Toni Kohn-Woodward Foundation would like to thank the support of the Rundle Community. There were many Alumni, Families and Faculty in attendance at the Gala, and we couldn’t have had such a successful evening without our volunteers, many of them being alumni, teachers and administrative staff at Rundle College. We are all so grateful for everyone’s continued support. On June 11th, we hosted a spin fundraiser, “Toni’s Ride”, in honour of Toni’s birthday, and our first Toni Kohn-Woodward Charity Golf Tournament will be held in September. For more information on these events, and The Toni Kohn-Woodward Foundation, please visit our website at www.tkwfoundation.org

CELEBRATING Rundle Academy Alumni With only 3 students in the first graduating class of 2001, the Rundle Academy Alumni Program has grown to nearly 350. Rundle’s combined Alumni Association shows strength in numbers with over 1500 members! Join us in celebrating 15 years of Rundle Academy Alumni!
RUNDLE historian Richard Lawson I have been teaching at Rundle Academy for close to twenty years and it has been time well spent. I graduated from the University of British Columbia and went straight to work teaching on a Hutterite Colony in rural Southern Alberta. From there I travelled to Japan where I spent three years teaching English in the Japanese public school system. Upon arriving home, I began work as a teacher assistant at the “My years at Rundle Academy have newly-formed Rundle Academy, helped mold me into the teacher and and received a full-time teaching person I am today. I could not imagine teaching anywhere else. position the following year. I have been with the Academy through its growing pains as it strived to set down roots as a viable option for students with learning disabilities. I have watched the program flourish into the magnificent school that it is today. Over the years, I have dabbled on the administrative side of things, but still find that my heart remains with teaching the wonderful students that walk through our doors every morning. I still find it deeply rewarding teaching students with learning disabilities and truly satisfying watching them succeed after graduation.

RUNDLE ALUMNI reflections After graduating from Rundle Academy, Chris Huband ‘11 enrolled in Business at Mount Royal University and has since earned a business degree in supply chain management. Chris currently works for ConocoPhillips in Calgary. After his Rundle days, Chris continued to play football and swapped out his Cobra jersey for a Calgary Colts jersey; he played with the Colts for two years. Chris has been part of the Cobras program for over 10 years as both a player and volunteering as an assistant coach. It’s not surprising that Chris still remains connected to Rundle. During his days at the Academy, Chris was involved in many extracurricular activities in the school and was a decorated athlete being awarded the Male Athlete of the Year in 2008. Chris also holds The Alberta Bowl Football Record for the most points, most yards, and longest run.
“I think it is important as an alumni to give back in any way you can.”
When we asked Chris what he misses most about Rundle, he immediately said, “I miss the small classes at Rundle and the individualized attention I received from the teachers. Rundle Academy is a family community that looks out for one another.” We are proud to have Chris in our school community and are grateful for his contributions as a proud Rundle alumnus.
Alumna Sarah Lamoureux ‘11 is currently studying Information Design at Mount Royal University which allows her to use all of the subjects that she enjoyed such as math, science, art and design. The work varies from creating the design of a museum exhibition, to way-finding systems for hospitals, web design, video, book and magazine production, usability testing for mobile applications, and of course graphic design. After Sarah graduates from the program, she hopes to complete a masters in either exhibition design or museum studies. Her dream job is to one day work at the EMP (Experience Music Project) in Seattle in some sort of an exhibition design aspect. In 2014, Sarah had the opportunity to participate in an exchange semester in Graz, Austria at FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences. Knowing that she doesn’t always ‘put herself out there’, this turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of her life that included new adventures, travelling abroad and making friends from all over the world. Currently, Sarah works at Crave Cupcakes in their head office as their Brand Communication Designer creating their instructional design, social media, and other design work. She loves the company, her large desk by a bay window and the perks of baked goods! Graduating? New Job? Marriage? Babies? Send us your alumni updates - alumni@rundle.ab.ca

RA ALUMNI moving mountains After graduation, Kerrie Slimmon ‘02 attended Mount Royal College obtaining a diploma in General Studies. She then continued her studies at Athabasca University and completed a bachelor’s of general studies degree, with a minor in learning disabilities. Since then, Kerrie has been predominantly working in aquatics for the City of Calgary Recreation Department as a swim instructor/lifeguard, and has since become a senior attendant at Village Square Leisure Centre. In her spare time, Kerrie enjoys scrapbooking, playing dodgeball, hiking, scuba diving, and travelling to exotic places such as Vietnam, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, Bahamas, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru. Kerrie also completed a mission trip to Taiwan to teach English.
2002
“I owe a lot of my success to Rundle Academy, and gained the confidence that I could achieve whatever I set my mind to.”
After high school, Brad Fraser ‘05 completed his construction engineering technology diploma at NAIT. He then worked away from home in the oil industry in Fort McMurray. In 2013, Brad started his own company, Fraser's Energy Services.
2005
Brad remembers his days at Rundle Academy fondly. “It felt like family and everyone knew everybody. We were all there for the same reason; to graduate and to help one another succeed. It didn’t matter what the reason was for being there; we all accepted everyone for who they were. It isn’t like a regular school - Rundle Academy provided us with a family-like community.” Brad also shares his words of wisdom: “Follow your dream, and never give up. You will run into many challenges, but learn from them and move on. They will make you a stronger person. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to get to your dream. You will get there when the time is right!” After Rundle, Shea Fairbanks ‘07 moved to Whistler, B.C. and worked on the Alpine Downhill Ski Race courses during the Olympics. He moved back to Calgary for a short time to work at Supreme Menswear downtown before returning to B.C. and enrolling in the Nimbus School of Recording Arts in Vancouver. Shea has since graduated with a diploma in Advanced Music Production and won a Gold Record for being top of his class.
Alumna Kathleen O’Neil ‘08 graduated from the Disabilities Studies Program at Mount Royal and began work with autistic students. Kathleen extended her passion of teaching to include skating instruction and landed a spot with the famed Disney On Ice company. Kathleen has spent the last year travelling and skating!
2008
“Strive for whatever it is that makes you happy. Live your life with passion, follow your dreams, and never let anyone stop you in your quest for greatness.”
Shea remained in Vancouver and is the co-owner and founder of a record label, tour agency, and production company as well as the creator of a clothing brand. Shea has travelled to France, extensively 2007 throughout the United States and recently to Nashville, Tennessee - a record producer’s dream!

Your Rundle Legacy Project 19.89 - 20.15 Rundle Endowment/Bursary Fund The Class of 2015 initiated the first Project 20.15 as a graduation gift in the form of a bursary to support the gift of a Rundle education to deserving future Rundle students. Each graduate committed to contributing $20.15/year for 5 years or a one-time payment of $100.75. With the success of Project 20.15, we have expanded the bursary to give each graduating class the opportunity to contribute and leave their legacy at Rundle. (For example, Class of 1989 donates $19.89/year or $99.45) We are looking for 100% participation from each grad year. Send in your 2016 donation today and rally your fellow classmates and be the first class to reach 100%! If every alumni gave their grad year donation of approximately $20, together, we would raise over $30,000!
