Plug and play CO2 monitor keeps workplace safe As offices begin to open up in the next few weeks, and safety comes to the fore, companies are being encouraged to install CO2 Monitors in the workplace. Ventilation, in the current pandemic, is one of the most important factors in helping reduce the relative risk of the airborne transmission of COVID-19. A report produced by Sage’s Environmental and Modelling Group (EMG), and endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), suggests that fresh air plays a significant role in keeping the virus at bay indoors, and that poor air quality could be highlighted with the use of a CO2 monitor. In response, a UK manufactured, USB powered ‘plug and play’ CO2 monitor has been launched in 2021 to provide a cost-effective solution. The Vision CO2 Monitor helps determine if further ventilation is required by providing a clear

digital readout and focuses on a bold traffic light display to indicate that further ventilation is required when it matters. ‘This CO2 monitor is particularly appropriate for offices, site cabins, and schools where there are installation constraints, facilitating a fast but reliable method of monitoring the risk of COVID transmission,’ commented Andy Green, who developed the unit. Elevated CO2 levels not only provide an indication that airborne contaminants may be present, but they also reduce cognitive function, productivity and can have long term adverse effects on health and general wellbeing. ‘Most buildings are naturally ventilated and rely on opening windows for fresh air, or use air recirculation systems that have been switched off, so without a CO2 monitor there is no way of knowing if spaces such as offices and classrooms are adequately ventilated,’ commented Andy Green.

George Clarke launches exciting home design competition for young people Talented schools and colleges to produce designs for the resource efficient house Architect and TV presenter George Clarke today launches a national challenge for young people in Scotland to design an extension to the Resource Efficient House in Glasgow. The challenge is being run by the City of Glasgow College, the Energy Skills Partnership (ESP) and George’s education charity for young people, MOBIE (the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education). The challenge will inspire the next generation of home designers, makers and innovators. The presenter of Channel 4 TV programmes Restoration Man, George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Old House New Home, joined Jacqueline Schindler of Tigh Grian Ltd and Robert Cowie of ÜserHuus Ltd, the creators of the Resource Efficient House, at a webinar hosted by Caitriona Jordan of the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC), to launch the exciting challenge to schools and colleges. The Resource Efficient House was assembled in 2013 at the Building Research Establishment’s Ravenscraig site. It is a ground-breaking, exemplar quality, sustainable and affordable family home of the future that includes the latest green technologies. It was purposely designed to be deconstructed and moved to a new site and it is now time for it to be relocated to the centre of Glasgow and retrofitted with the latest technology.

Speaking at the launch George said: “MOBIE is all about the future of home design in Britain and across the world. I am delighted to be launching this exciting challenge, the first MOBIE challenge for young people in Scotland, with our partners the City of Glasgow College and the Energy Skills Partnership. Clarke added “We all need a shelter and our home is the most important piece of architecture in our lives. But home is more than just a shelter, it is a place that enhances the quality and experience of our everyday lives and our health and well-being. Homes of the future must look after our planet. That is why we are asking students to think about designing an extension for and relocating the Resource Efficient House, so they are thinking about new technologies and approaches to buildings that can help us become zero carbon. He went on “By harnessing the talents, ideas and energy of the young people of today we can change the way we build homes. The amazing student designs that I know will flow from this challenge will show that we have a future generation with the talent and the imagination to really make a difference for people and the planet.”

John Renwick, Construction Sector Manager at the Energy Skills Partnership, a collaboration of all Scotland’s regional colleges, said “construction is a vital sector to the economy and it is an industry crying out for more people with the right skills. This challenge gives students at Scottish colleges an opportunity to experience real construction problems with a real house. By involving schools, it will help show children how interesting, rewarding and varied a career in the built environment can be. He added “Our future homes need to help us avoid climate change and environmental damage, so with COP26 the UN Climate change conference coming to Glasgow in November, it is most appropriate that this challenge is asking young people to learn about and further develop the ground-breaking ideas used in the Resource Efficient House”. George Clarke is the founder of MOBIE, an educational charity which is spearheading a fundamental change to the building industry. MOBIE is focused on raising the design standards, build quality and innovation around home building. Its mission is to inspire new generations into the building profession and to fundamentally transform the way we think about, design and construct homes in the UK.

The challenge invites schools and colleges from across Scotland to design an extension to the Resource Efficient House, to provide a beautiful, green and healthy living space for its occupants. College students are also being asked to plan the dismantling and relocation of the house to the centre of Glasgow and to upgrade the building with the latest smart technology and services to make it more energy efficient and zero carbon. The challenge is open to young people aged between 11 and 25. The deadline for entries is 28 June 2021.

Unrivalled performance from Schöck modular connectivity solution Phase three of the Elephant Park regeneration project comprises Park Central (North) and East Grove. These developments provide more than 800 new homes and the thermal performance at the design detailing involving the balconies and the unitised façades needed careful consideration if thermal bridging was to be minimised After the widespread devastation of the Second World War, the Elephant and Castle district of London was clumsily redeveloped during the 1950s. The resulting offices, housing estates and shopping centre were impressive in their time, but at best outmoded in recent times. However, the area has remained an important part of Central London and the current £2.3 billion Elephant Park regeneration project now aims to create one of the most sustainable inner-city regeneration projects in Europe. Overall there are five phases at various stages in the masterplan, with the third currently live alongside the New Kent Road. There are eleven buildings in this phase, divided into two plots – Park Central (North) and East Grove – providing 829 homes in total. There are brick-finished midrise blocks to 11 and 12-storeys throughout and

each plot also features a main tower, one at 24-storey, the other 25-storey, both part of the family of tall buildings in the masterplan. Construction of the towers uses around 19,000 m2 of aluminium unitised façade panels. The façade panels for the towers, supplied by FKN and Lindner, were delivered complete with integrated sliding doors and openings ready for the connection of ventilation devices. There are also hundreds of cantilever steel balconies throughout the project. These were supplied by Sheffield based Dearneside Fabrications Ltd. and were also pre-fabricated, including flooring and glazed balustrades. Avoidance of thermal bridging is critical With steel having such a high conductivity when compared with other construction materials the avoidance of thermal bridging is critical throughout the project.

Local heat loss is a major factor, resulting in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building. Also, low internal surface temperatures in the area of any thermal bridge can cause condensation. This in turn is likely to result in structural integrity problems with absorbent materials, such as insulation products or plasterboard. Mould growth is also a possible risk, which in a residential situation can cause asthma and allergies. Unique and versatile The versatile Schöck Isokorb T type S structural thermal break is the ideal connectivity solution for project applications involving steel-to-steel applications. There are two variants, the T type S-N for tensile force and the T type S-V for transferring compression and shear forces.


It is the only approved thermal break product for steel construction that satisfies the loadbearing and thermal insulation requirements of steel design. Also, being a modular unit, it can be adapted to all profile sizes and load bearing capacity requirements – plus it can be used in both new construction and renovation projects. Totally verifiable performance Although the Schöck product types used in phase three at Elephant Park are for steel-to-steel connectivity, the comprehensive Isokorb range also offers solutions for concrete-to-steel, concreteto-concrete – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. The requirement described in BRE IP1/06 and cited in Building Regulations Approved Documents Part L1 and L2 and Section 6 in Scotland, that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI) must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for residential buildings is easily met by incorporating the Isokorb. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. Products meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations, have NHBC approval and offer LABC Registration. There is also the security of independent BBA Certification. Widgets achieves zero landfill mark After a two-and-a-half-year waste management programme, Window Widgets has now achieved a zero-landfill mark, as the company looks to build further upon its impressive green credentials. Driven by Andrew Taylor, QHSE Manager, the waste management programme ensures that only compliant waste carriers with an up-to-date licence are used across the recycling and reprocessing of nineteen different types of waste. Investment has been made in waste bailers and compactors at their site in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire and there are additional plans to help process further materials for recycling, that are currently designated as general waste. The general waste that can’t be recycled is transported directly to the new £633m Javelin Park incineration plant near junction 12 of the M5, that is run by Urbaser Balfour Beatty on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council to treat

the county’s residual waste. The aim of this new plant is to generate enough power for 25,000 local homes, make a significant reduction in carbon emissions and will save the taxpayer £100 million over 25 years. Elsewhere in the business the first fully electric company car has been delivered, with others to follow, while several carbon offsetting schemes are also under consideration in a companywide strategy of making Window Widgets one of the most environmentally conscious companies in the glazing and fenestration sectors. The business is also looking to change their electricity suppliers when this comes up for renewal in 2022 to one that is based on 100% renewables. Japanese Knotweed: It’s Knot to be Ignored The number of Japanese knotweed related cases going to court is increasing, with significant financial penalties for those that cause nuisance or have been negligent with respect to Japanese knotweed. In 1981, Japanese knotweed was one of the first plants to be added to the Wildlife and Countryside Act, making it illegal to commercially sell or allow the plant to spread to the wild. Further acts of legislation from 1990 (The Environmental Protection Act 1990, Duty of Care Regulations 1991, and RPS 178) governed the handling and disposal of the plant and materials contaminated by the plant material. Additionally, in recent years we have seen a sharp rise in private litigation cases surrounding Japanese knotweed. 2018 saw the first successful documented case law for Private Nuisance in respect to Japanese knotweed. Now claims for Private Nuisance and Professional Negligence are more commonplace, as well being served a Community Protection Notice (ASBO) with a fine for failing to act and control the spread of knotweed.

What to do if you find Japanese Knotweed It’s important to avoid disturbing the affected area to prevent spread of the contamination and also to manage the Japanese knotweed in an appropriate manner Do - Contact Japanese Knotweed Ltd so we can manage, control, and remove the problem for you. - Fence the Japanese knotweed off if there is imminent risk of disturbance. Fencing should be erected 5-7 metres away from the visible growth to prevent disturbance of the plants’ underground rhizome. It should be clearly signed. - Draw up a Knotweed Management Plan, especially if several contractors are to be involved on the site.

- Commence treatment/removal of Japanese knotweed as soon as possible after discovering its presence. - Adhere to recommendations in the PCA Code of Practice for managing knotweed, when controlling or removing Japanese knotweed. Don’t x Where possible allow works to commence on a development site without first drawing up a Knotweed Management Plan (KMP). x Allow contractors to undertake site work until it has been properly surveyed for the presence of knotweed. x Allow knotweed material to leave your site intentionally or unintentionally in a manner that will contravene the Environmental Protection Act and the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations. x Allow Japanese knotweed to spread into adjacent properties, as this could contravene legislation and private nuisance laws leaving you vulnerable to third party litigation from your neighbour(s). x Flail or strim knotweed, as this will cause the Japanese knotweed to spread. x Store materials on top of Japanese knotweed areas, or the materials themselves could become contaminated with knotweed. x Chip Japanese knotweed material, as this could result in new Japanese knotweed growth wherever the chipped material is spread. x Add Japanese knotweed to compost, as this can lead to knotweed growing in your compost heap. x Burn Japanese knotweed as large rhizomes and crowns can survive burning.

Options for Treating or Removing Japanese Knotweed Herbicide Treatment of Japanese Knotweed Often the most cost-effective Japanese knotweed treatment and control method is a Herbicide Treatment Programme (HTP). An HTP involves methodical and carefully managed visits where the correct use of chemical over a sustained period will exhaust the plant and prevent the spread of knotweed. This will remove the risk of damage being caused to the property during the treatment period. Complete, Instant Removal of Japanese Knotweed Excavating Japanese knotweed provides an instant eradication solution. The appropriate excavation and waste disposal method will depend on access, restrictions, or presence of trees and services, development timescales and the proposed development plan. On-site sustainable methods such as burial may be appropriate where there is space to bury waste, such as public open space. Alternatively, off-site disposal could be the only solution. This provides instant eradication of knotweed, although it’s the least sustainable method of knotweed eradication as the arising waste is transferred to landfill as “controlled waste”. A professional knotweed company will aim to reduce the quantities of waste removed to landfill, thereby reducing the client’s costs. This requires a Waste Carrier’s Licence, and the client should receive a full wastetracking record on completion. Rare re-roof using Welsh Slate wins national award Greenough & Sons win in the 2021 Pitched Roofing Awards.

The renovation of a 17th Century listed café in the Snowdonia National Park, which incorporated some “rare” roofing methods using Welsh Slate, has won the contractors a national award. Greenough & Sons, who are based on the Isle of Anglesey, were one of seven specialist sub-contractors shortlisted for the “Best use of a roof tile for a heritage roof,” category of the 2021 Pitched Roofing Awards. Their 10-week work on the Grade II listed Y Sospan cafe in the town centre of Dolgellau in north-west Wales involved the use of mitred hips and “single-cut” swept valleys which were once traditional to the immediate area but are now extremely rare to see. The project also featured the use of Welsh Slate’s Cwt Y Bugail blue grey slates in random diminishing courses to replicate the coursing of the original roof which had been coated with bitumen and subject to various unsuccessful localised repair attempts. After the original roof was stripped and recorded, Greenough’s head-fixed the new slates with copper nails onto 50mm x 25mm battens over open rafters and a total of 210m2 of roof – the main, 40°-pitch area with 8-16” lengths, and a lower-pitched area with 22” lengths. Greenough managing director Jon Greenough said: “The slate valleys, having no lead or any form of flashing, are an extremely difficult detail to get right, and only the most experienced slaters with local knowledge of their construction would be able to carry out these features to maintain the look, and just as importantly, keep the rain out. “The random Cwt Y Bugail slates were the perfect match for authenticity. The best-quality slates gave the slaters confidence in the material they were using and provided the client with a product of unrivalled durability.” He added: “Much time was taken working with the architect and other industry

experts in recording the existing details and ensuring the new roof replicated the original as closely as possible. The project was considered a great success by everyone involved, including the cafe owners.” Architect Rhys Llwyd Davies explained that the roof was one of the main elements of the £210,000, year-long renovation of the café, which was formerly the town’s gaol (with the magistrates’ court on the first floor) as part of the Dolgellau Townscape Heritage Scheme - a project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Snowdonia National Park Authority, and Cadw and Gwynedd Council which had identified it as one of three “High priority buildings” needing attention. The works were substantially funded under that scheme, although the café owners were apprehensive of using the purely traditional approach of oak pegs with the slates headbedded in lime, and wanted battens and a roofing membrane incorporated. This was compatible with the objective of the renovation, which was to renovate the existing fabric, restoring lost architectural features where that was harmonious with current building use and introduce energy efficiency measures where appropriate. Thus, the slates were fixed onto the battens over a breathable membrane which still allowed the traditional detailing to be used. The use of the battens was a particular interest for the listed building consent as they, rather than laths, slightly raised the roof’s surface. Head lap was approximately one third as the work moved up the roof. Roof abutments with parapet walls and chimney abutments required the use of lead soakers and cover flashings, sometimes concealed to replicate the traditional appearance. Rhys Llwyd Davies said: “The original roof was a random diminishing-course slate roof with regional detailing including mitred hips


and slated Welsh valleys. The design team worked together to reach a solution where large slates were used on the lower pitch, with an increased head-lap that provided both an improved solution against wind-driven rain but also replicated the former appearance. “Welsh Slate were able to provide a product closely resembling the former roofing slates, also supplying the varying widths and lengths required to reinstate the roof installation. They were the best match for this historic listed building and a long-lasting material to satisfy the performance requirements. Sustainability was not a major factor in the decision making but as a long-lasting material we hope that it will not need to be renewed for a long time.” He added: “We regularly specify Welsh Slate and learned of the opportunity to specify varying widths and lengths during an office CPD session. The client is more than satisfied with the slating works and feel it enhances their property.” Welsh Slate sales/technical manager John Owens said: “Our involvement with Rhys Llwyd Davies and Greenough & Sons Roofing early within the project phase allowed time for the special random diminishing Cwt Y Bugail slates to be produced to specifically meet the requirements of the building. “The intricacies of the very traditional detailing, which have not been used for hundreds of years, require craft skills and an understanding of how slates work. Throughout the roofing works we liaised with Greenough & Sons on site to ensure any requirement for special-sized slates were met. “It is a pleasure to be involved in such interesting and challenging projects which are specified and carried out to the highest standards.” As well as the roof, the rest of the property was also renovated, including re-pointing with hot-lime mortar, repairing windows, installing cast iron rainwater goods, and introducing a consistent scheme of signage to advertise the building’s use. The winners of the 2021 Pitched Roofing Awards were announced in a virtual ceremony on February 26th. The judges said: “An outstanding job that everyone involved in can be proud of. This project shows exceptional workmanship and true heritage works. It highlights great use of natural slate with some very traditional detailing. The overall appearance with stone walling looks fantastic.” 15

Band of Builders (BoB) is a registered charity that aids members of the construction industry when times get tough through hands-on support, as well as providing help and advice through its extensive online community. The organisation was founded by tradesman Addam Smith in 2016 to assist his friend and fellow builder, Keith Ellick, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Addam recruited volunteers from around the country to ensure that the home renovations Keith had originally commenced were completed for his family.

Caribbean Blinds partners with local landscaper for ‘most creative’ Outdoor Living Pod™ installation Last summer, luxury external shading manufacturer Caribbean Blinds completed its most ‘creative’ installation of one of its most popular products, the Outdoor Living Pod™, in collaboration with an exceptional landscaping firm. During the early design stages of a complete garden renovation project in Hemel Hempstead in November 2019, Limebok Landscaping contacted the outdoor shading experts for their assistance. Floating Home Floating home by i29 architects is part of Schoonschip, a new floating village of 46 households that aims to create Europe’s most sustainable floating community. Commissioned by CPO Schoonschip an urban plan was made and over 100 residents moved into and revitalized a disused canal and established themselves a living on the water. The location has a strong industrial past but today it is one of the most rapid changing city parts of Amsterdam transforming into a more multi functional living area. The new floating neighborhood is intended to be an urban ecosystem embedded within the fabric of the city: making full use of ambient energy and water for use and re-use, cycling nutrients and minimizing waste, plus creating space for natural biodiversity. The site is energy self-sufficient, employs circular building practices and serves as a showcase for sustainable living. A smart jetty connects the 46 floating households with each other and the quay.

On the top surface, the jetty is a social connector where people meet. Down below the surface, the jetty is a functional and sustainable connector with all the energy, waste and water lines attached to every household connected together. Within the smart grid of the village and the given boundaries of every water plot, every single home is able to be unique in architecture and interior design. All inhabitants were allowed to choose their own preferred architect. Our client challenged us to design a home which would maximize the space within the volume boundaries of the plot and still have a typical yet surprising house shape. The floating volume has a pitched roof, but the coping of the roof is turned diagonal in the floor plan which gives an optimization in usable space on the inside and an outspoken architectural design on the outside. To i29, architecture and interior designs are always intertwined and connected on each level to make a clear and unified experience.

The floating home exterior design is the result of a space extensional study within the interior and vice versa. All areas are in open connection to the atrium which comprises three floors. The layout is extended with a split level connection to a loggia terrace just above water level. The interior and facade play with the views on the outside. Views appear and disappear while moving through the home. The basement offers direct water level views, the living room only gives a view on the surroundings when sitting in the lounge and the kitchen on the top floor has directed views towards the south and north side of the canal. On the top floor, a cut out of the roof enables a loggia and open terrace with a view towards the harbor in the west . With simple yet smart interventions this project is realized on a tight budget but still has a unified architecture and interior design that leaves a strong impression. At the same time the floating home is extremely energy efficient, eco-friendly, and built with a small footprint. Sustainability goes even to a higher level with the implementation in the smart grid of the floating village. Energy can be even more valuable when you share it.

What the new government incentives mean for young professionals and downsizers Following the government’s budget announcement which included an extension to the stamp duty holiday and a new 95% mortgage guarantee scheme, property experts have outlined the ways in which young professionals and downsizers can take advantage of these incentives in the housing market. From extended deadlines, to new opportunities to buy earlier, experts from selling agent FHP Living, and joint developers Monk Estates and Harmony Bridge of The Waterside Apartments – a 121-home iconic waterfront complex on the banks of the River Trent - share intel on what these new initiatives mean for different buyers. The deadline for the stamp duty holiday is now 30 June, offering homebuyers the chance to avoid paying stamp duty land tax on properties up to the value of £500,000, presenting a considerable potential saving. After the 30 June

deadline, the stamp duty holiday will apply to properties up to the value of £250,000 until the end of September. Fortunately for prospective homebuyers, this unlocks more opportunities in terms of the scale and types of properties available. To facilitate the scheme in the long term, the government has stepped in to cover some of the risk, by guaranteeing the remaining portion of the mortgage over 80% to the lender, should a new homeowner fail to pay their mortgage. This acts as a safety net to lenders – encouraging them to start offering low-deposit mortgages once again, with many major banks also saying that they will come on board, giving buyers a wider range of deals to choose from. It means that professionals looking to buy a home close to the city, or downsizers wanting to move to a smaller property only have to put down a 5% deposit,


going up to a 9% maximum deposit, on the home of their choice. For a one-bedroom property at The Waterside Apartments, situated within walking distance of Nottingham city centre and the sought-after location of West Bridgford – at a price of £220,000, only an £11,000 deposit would be required.

Corridors leading to the offices are bright and play dialectically with curves and straight lines of the glass surface frame. The meeting room suggests power and dominion or perhaps just know-how and control and it is enlightened by imposing hanging lights designed to convey light together with a feeling of clearness. The other meeting rooms are smaller and compact in the structure suggesting intimacy and secrecy always dominated by the cone of light. Casalgrande Padana’s offering for ceramic façade cladding Innovative cladding systems allow for the installation of highly functional ceramic materials while enhancing the thermo-hygrometric qualities of the walls. Ventilated façades A ventilated façade is a dry-mounted cladding system bound to the building through mechanical suspension and anchoring elements. This system requires the creation of an appropriately sized cavity where to insert a thermal insulation panel in contact with the building wall and a chamber for upward air circulation (stack effect). A ventilated façade protects the building against weather agents and pollutants. It also ensures thermal and sound insulation. Façade cladding with glued ceramic tiles With this system, the porcelain stoneware tile is applied directly to the reinforced concrete structure with safety anchors between the glue and the tile. Casalgrande Padana allows you to choose between two systems: one with exposed anchors and one with concealed anchors. In the former, the ceramic tiles are glued directly to the substrate using the double glue-down technique. Metal plates with visible anchors are mechanically fastened between the glue and the tile through expansion plugs and nails. In the latter, special incisions are made on the back of the ceramic tiles to house the metal anchors. Insulation systems using special thin tiles An insulation system consists in applying thermal insulation panels on the external walls to create one single covering. Such a system improves a building’s energy performance and eliminates thermal bridges – which cause heat dispersion – as well as condensation and mould. Ceramic tiles only 4.9 mm thick ensure a wide array of benefits. They are easier to handle, work, cut, and drill. They are easy to clean and maintain and help reduce the load on the bearing structure. They even have a lower environmental impact, as fewer raw materials and energy resources are used to make them.

An abstract design approach to inspire creativity The Barbara Hepworth building is home to the University of Huddersfield’s School of Art, Design and Architecture. Experimental in its design and function it was designed to inspire creativity by bringing together students and staff from different creative courses. The abstract design approach of local artist, Barbara Hepworth, one of the most prominent figures of 20th century design is reflected in the architecture. An example is seen in the building’s unique façade constructed using Schüco systems. It features a laser-cut veil inspired by the textiles and the history of the neighbouring mills and given a contemporary and abstract twist. Each aluminium panel was individually designed by architects, AHR. In addition to achieving their practical purpose of helping to provide solar shading, the panels also reference the use of geometry and abstractionism by Barbara Hepworth.

A key challenge of the design was supporting these large feature solar shading panels, in particular the seven metre spans on the façade above the entranceThe façade was designed and supplied using Schüco FWS 60 curtain walling. Schüco created a bespoke FWS 60 system with brackets designed to tolerate the additional weight and movement of the laser cut panels. Another bespoke element of the Schüco design incorporated oversized 2000 mm high AWS 114 concealed vents, with automatic actuators where windows were above head height to allow natural ventilation into the building. The building’s entrance features Schüco ADS 65 HD double doors which open into a spacious atrium with views throughout the space culminating in an 18 metre cantilever over the neighbouring canal.

Schüco systems fulfil all the fundamental principles of sustainable product development which made the company a natural fit for this building which was designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent with an EPC rating of A. Robert Hopkins, Regional Director and Project Lead at AHR, said, “We chose to work with Schüco on this ambitious project for its specialist knowledge and experience in designing bespoke systems. “The high quality Schüco systems incorporated in the design were fundamental to bringing our vision of the building’s façade to life. The building’s transparency gives passersby an intriguing glimpse of the creative processes and advanced technologies at work within.” The building’s striking design incorporating Schüco systems and products has won awards at the LABC West Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards 2020, Northern Design Awards 2019 and Construction Excellence National Awards 2019. The building was also selected in outstanding shortlists for the RIBA Yorkshire Awards 2020 and Education Estates Project of the Year Colleges & Universities 2020. The Barbara Hepworth building advances how design education is delivered. It nurtures a new and inspired generation of designers within one flexible hub that meets the University’s evolving needs and significantly supports the region. How modern facade paints can help with refurbishment projects Kevin Davies of Sto Ltd examines some of the latest developments in façade paints and finishes, and the advantages they offer for today’s refurbishment projects.

Restoring building façades to their best can be a tough challenge when rain, dirt and environmental pollution all begin to exert their damaging influence the moment the task is complete. Fortunately, there are paint finishes on today’s market which can help fight those influences and keep the building looking its best for far longer than previously. Extensive research into this field has produced innovative new paints which are proven to help maintain a building’s appearance. These really are the paints of the future, so it’s worth taking a closer look at them. The natural look One of these paints borrows inspiration from the natural world, and creates a surface which mimics the shell of the fogbasking beetle that lives in dry, dessert terrains. The shell of the beetle has a unique surface of micro-textures which simultaneously repel water droplets falling onto it, and channel them away quickly and effectively. Using a special combination of binding agents and filler material, this advanced paint replicates both the texture and water-handling characteristics of the beetle’s shell. When exposed to rainwater or dew, the building’s façade dries out far more rapidly than with a conventional paint finish, to prevent staining, marking or the growth of algae. Being suitable for use on all conventional substrates – and available in a huge range of colours - this paint is ideal for refurbishment projects, and creates a façade finish that can significantly reduce refurbishment and cleaning requirements in the future. A new leaf Borrowing techniques from nature has also led to the development of another advanced, highly effective water and dirtrepellent render paint. This has a special formulation which recreates the surface found on the leaf of the Lotus plant. It creates a similar surface texture on the exterior of the building, which encourages any rain falling on it to run off in large droplets. As it does so, it takes loose particles of dirt and debris with it, effectively washing the surface clean

every time it rains. Once again, this selfcleaning action makes the surface far less susceptible to staining over time, meaning that maintenance and refurbishment requirements are significantly reduced. This paint is also equally well suited to use on new or existing renders, so it should be given serious consideration when a building façade is due to be refurbished. This type of matt-finish façade paint uses special NIR (Near Infra-Red) pigments that reflect the solar energy falling on the façade and keep the outer surface of the render cool, thus protecting the render itself and preventing cracking. This effectively removes all the thermal limits which have previously inhibited the use of dark renders on buildings. Even black finishes are now possible, and while this keeps the architect happy, it also reduces future maintenance and refurbishment requirements. So next time a building’s façade is due for a refurbishment, it’s well worth paying close attention to the available façade finish options. Making the correct decisions at this stage can have a major impact and help extend future maintenance intervals significantly. A dark solution Keen to achieve a particular creative impact with their buildings, architects and building designers can create thermally insulated façade designs covered with a dramatic dark-coloured render. This however, can cause significant problems from a maintenance perspective. When dark renders absorb solar heat - sometimes reaching temperatures of up to 80°C – a building’s façade may overheat, causing expansion and dimensional instability in the render. The cracking which occurs in the render creates a maintenance challenge which usually needs to be dealt with immediately, before water ingress begins to cause damage. Fortunately, there is a modern façade paint which can help eliminate this problem.

UK’s biggest telehandler hirer places £26 Million loadall order The UK’s biggest telehandler hirer is expanding its fleet further - by placing an order for £26 million worth of JCB Loadall models. Ardent Hire Solutions is adding 525 new JCB Loadall telescopic handlers to its fleet as the UK construction hire equipment market rebounds strongly from the Covid-19 pandemic. The order spans the compact 525-60 to the 540200 models, which have reaches of between six and 20 metres. The machines – supplied by JCB dealer Watling JCB - have already started rolling off the production line at JCB’s World HQ in Rocester, Staffordshire along with 25 3CX backhoe loaders, which are also part of the massive deal. If follows a deal in 2019 from Ardent for £75 million worth of JCB machines. JCB Group Managing Director for Global Major Accounts Steve Fox said: “We are delighted that
